You've got the land, you've got the deer. But the season's closing in and your mind's racing with more questions than answers. That's why this summer I traveled across the Midwest to sit down with some of the most experienced whitetail hunters and land managers in the country to discuss the burning questions and whitetail dilemmas we all face on our own back 40s. Whether it's 40 acres or 400. I'm Jake Hofer and this is back 40, a limited series show on Wire to Hunt, part of Meat Eaters Podcast Network. Each episode I'll be asking eight whitetail experts a thought provoking question or dilemma like how do I hunt the best part of the farm with less than ideal access?
B
Everything is always risk, reward. Is it, is it worth the risk to go in here to hunt? The best spot on your farm has bad access, then it's not the best spot on your farm. You stay in there. You know, I did that one season. I hunted the buck for 12 days and never once slept in my bed. Well, should you? That's what the real question is. Stand without good access is not a good stand.

What can every hunter do to make the next 25 years better than the last?

This would be the perfect spot. One of them. That's. I guess that's what I'm saying, is as perfect as one man can make it. Well, I think that asking every deer hunter to do what's right for the resource is a big ass. That's never going to happen. So get in the game. Figure out a plan to get your first piece of ground. You know, when you own the ground and you can make the decisions, you have to be able to do that. You know, get in the game, buy.

A significant portion of the discussion revolves around the concept of risk and reward in hunting. Hofer shares a personal anecdote to illustrate the lengths hunters might go to secure a prime spot:
“I hunted the buck for 12 days and never once slept in my bed.” ([00:40])
This statement underscores the dedication and potential sacrifices involved in hunting, highlighting the importance of strategic decision-making when it comes to choosing hunting locations.
The conversation shifts towards sustainable hunting practices and long-term land management. Hofer poses a pivotal question to his guests:
“What can every hunter do to make the next 25 years better than the last?” ([01:05])
In response, the emphasis is placed on responsible land ownership and proactive planning. The guest advises hunters to:
“When you own the ground and you can make the decisions, you have to be able to do that.” ([01:10])
A critical topic discussed is the accessibility of hunting spots. Hofer raises a pragmatic viewpoint:
“The best spot on your farm has bad access, then it's not the best spot on your farm.” ([00:40])
This highlights the necessity of evaluating not just the quality of the hunting location but also the feasibility of reaching it. The advice is clear: prioritize hunting spots that offer both quality and accessibility to maximize success and minimize unnecessary risk.
