Hey everyone. Welcome to the Friday edition of the Nerve. What a show we have for you today. I was very excited putting this together, but I do. Before we start, I would just like to share a little personal anecdote. I lost my iPhone yesterday on the streets of Brooklyn, and it was incredibly destabilizing because, first of all, I couldn't believe I even lost it. I've never lost a phone in my life, and it was and has been kind of traumatic. So, like, luckily there was an Apple store a few blocks away, ran to the Apple store, replaced the phone, but Apple has locked me out of my own iCloud for 24 hours. So I have no Instagram, no Venmo, no ways, none of the things that, you know, like technology has basically reduced us to toddlers. I feel as though there's very little I can do. And then a friend of mine told me that last night or no, two nights ago was a. A strawberry moon. And apparently a strawberry moon causes all kinds of chaos. And I have felt the ripple effects, as have many of my friends and people around me. And the other thing I just want to say is, you know, when it comes to New Yorkers, there is a trope in the culture that we are very confrontational and dramatic and can be very, you know, rude and in your face and all of that. And that's there. There's truth to that. I mean, in many ways, that is our love language. But when push comes to shove. New Yorkers are secretly the kindest, most considerate, most thoughtful and empathetic people will ever meet. And I just want to say thank you to my friend Kim, who was going to take my dog yesterday as I was going to do really important things like go to a serious doctor's appointment. And instead, what am I doing? Like, like a trained seal. I'm over at the Apple store begging for a new iPhone and she texted me. So I, I, I wasn't able to get a hold of her to say, like, I, I can't meet up with you. I, you know, I, I've lost my phone because I lost my phone. I, after I got a hold of her last night, this is what she texted me. I walked the dogs to the street I was on where I lost it last night and looked around. I wanted to call your phone, but figured it would have already been deactivated. And I didn't want to disturb you on your new phone. If you happen to be able to locate it, you can send me to hunt it down. You know, this is like above and beyond, and these are the kinds of people who truly make New York City one of the greatest cities on the planet. So I love you, Kim. Thank you for that. Now we are going to get into it. First, the latest and deeply personal testimony in the Diddy trial. We are wrapping up week five, and the prosecution has, has yet to motion towards wrapping it up. So we're going to break this all apart with top US Criminal defense lawyer Tom Kenneth. Then we're going to lighten some things up with very, very earnest New York Times advice columns. It was hard to pick favorites, but they're here. And then my, my absolute, I, I live for this segment. Your comments and emails. And then that will be followed by some packed epic celebrity news and scandal what we at the Nerve call real talk about fake people. So come along, troublemakers, for conversations that will take you well into the weekend. But first, as we said, Diddy trial is wrapping up week five. Federal prosecutors have been methodically building their case for over one month now. And in that time, star witness Cassie Ventura has given birth. This week has been dominated by the pseudonymous witness known as Jane Doe, who was Diddy's girlfriend and she claims also his victim, Bill Maher would like a word and we'll get back to him a little bit later. Don't worry. Joining me now to discuss the latest in this case is top US Criminal defense attorney Tom Kenneth. Tom, great to have you back here on the Nerve. Great. So before we get into this, I, I want to lead with this bombshell report. Per the New York Post on Tuesday, the quote, sha Diddy Combs is a cuck who is secretly bicurious but too ashamed to have sex with other men. Jane Doe said in bombshell testimony at his Manhattan trial on Tuesday. Tom, first of all, I'm very curious as to your thoughts because you are off the heels of one of the highest profile criminal trials of the past five years, the Daniel Penny trial. And I don't even think in your trial you had a witness who took the stand for as many as six consecutive days, is that right?
Tom Kenneth
Six day witnesses. And there was no talk about my client's sex life either.
Maureen
Oh, small mercies, right? Small mercies. I mean, what do you make of the prosecution having this, this Jane Doe on the stand for six days? Does some of this go to them really trying to, I, this is just my own supposition. Dig into the nuances of how she could stay with him for three years while claiming she's also been victimized by him?
Tom Kenneth
I think that's part of it. I mean, I think what they're trying to do is the prosecutor, the prosecution, I mean is, you know, the longer they keep her on the stand, the jury may develop more of a familiarity with her, more of an affection for her. Understand, you know, why it is that someone who claims to have been sex trafficked by fraud force or coercion or in a relationship that they'd want to be in, forced to do, you know, ungodly acts at the behest of Diddy, would have remained in that relationship, would have sent emails, communications of affection and so forth. And this is a problem that you see in, in virtually every high profile sex case. I mean, we saw this. I was watching a lot of the Harvey Weinstein trial this week in Manhattan and you know, same sort of issue. You explain how it is that you say that this person coerced you into a sexual relationship or forcibly raped you. But in the days and the weeks and even the years that filed followed in the case of some of those witnesses, you know, you continue to be effusive towards them, continue to seek his affection and so forth. Similar dynamic here in the Diddy case.
Maureen
Tom, have you personally been going into that courtroom? The Harvey, the Harvey trial?
Tom Kenneth
Yeah, absolutely, my friend. Well, first of all, I know the judge is presiding over the case. I've tried cases in front of Judge Curtis Barber in Manhattan and I know Artie Idalla is a, been a long term friend of Mine, great lawyer. We collaborate on a lot of things. In fact, Artie used the jury consulting team that we used in the Daniel Penney case on the Harvey Weinstein trial.
Maureen
Fascinating. What is your take on. When you're looking at the jury in the Harvey trial? Do you have a. Do you have a sense at all of where they. They may be falling?
Tom Kenneth
Well, with respect to the Harvey trial, I mean, that all culminated really within the last 24 hours. And you know, I did. When I first went into the courtroom and saw the trial, I thought that Harvey, you know, had a good chance of getting something out of this. As it turned out, he's got, you know, a split verdict and a hung jury on the other count. But my read on the jury was that some of the members of that jury looked to be looking a scance at some of the accusers and maybe thinking that the accusers were maybe. Maybe got. Had a little too much to gain from Harvey Weinstein at the time they got into the relationships. Relationships with him and that. That they seem to be buying at least some of the transactional sex argument that the defense was putting forth in that case. And I think they were also looking a bit of scans at how much they profited since they made these claims. Because, remember, during the first trial of Harvey Weinstein Back in 2018, 2019, that was returned on appeal, you know, those witnesses were able to say, well, I'm not in it for money or I haven't gotten anything. Well, now no one anticipated that that case was going to be overturned, there would be a second trial. And now you come back five, six years later, and it turns out they've all gotten large monetary settlements and the jury gets to hear about that. So there are all parallels here between. Yeah, at least several of the witnesses had. Yeah. I mean, there. Cross examination of. Of one witness who, you know, at the time that she met Harvey Weinstein, she was an aspiring actress living in her car. Her career never panned out the way she had hoped it would. And after she accused Harvey Weinstein after his first trial, she got a settlement from some restitution fund of roughly a half million dollars. The jury got to hear about that.
Maureen
Wow.
Tom Kenneth
Because remember, a jury, always a jury. You know, a witness's bias, motivation go to credibility. And that is almost. That is virtually always fair game for the defense.
Maureen
Tom, can you.
Tom Kenneth
You know, it is interesting the parallels here.
Maureen
Yeah. Can you explain what that restitution fund is? Where the money comes from and who decides who gets how much?
Tom Kenneth
You know, frankly, Maureen, I'm not privy to all the details from what I surmised. Yeah, it's a fascinating trial. I would have liked to sat through the whole thing. Unfortunately, a lot of other trials that I'm tending to and I couldn't be there as much as I want. But it sounded like there may have been money that came from Disney or Miramax, you know, possibly from, you know, Harvey Weinstein himself. You know, these restitution funds can come from a lot of different sources. We see them in federal court and a lot of times in federal court. They're, they're the product of an order of restitution that the court imposes either upon a plea of guilty or a conviction after trial. That and the purpose of the restitution is to make the victims of the criminal offense whole.
Maureen
I just find it so fascinating that these funds can be, they're so mysterious and we don't necessarily know where the money came from, whether it's a corporation, a person, taxpayers, and who decide who decides the disbursement of said funds. I think that's fascinating. But to get back to Sean Combs, because these two cases are very much related. I mean, Harvey walks though. Sean Combs could run Jane, test. Some of her testimony. This week was unbelievable. And of course, we have text messages and voice messages that either back up or contradict some of what each person is claiming now. One of the, after five days of testimony. So there, there are a couple of things. She was participating in these freak offs. Now, Jane, we know, is a social media either influencer or content creator. She is a single mother. She is. She says that she has, she was threatened by Sean Combs to continue to participate in these freak offs or, or else he would release videotapes of, of said freak offs to her child's father. She had texted him at one point in September 2023. I don't want to feel obligated to perform these nights with you in fear of losing the roof over my head. Holmes is still paying her $10,000 a month rent, which as a defense lawyer, I mean, Tom, I would love to hear you how you would thread that needle. Another text. I'm not a porn star. I'm not an animal. I need a break. You know, how would you, how would you, if you were defending Sean Combs, try to explain away a text like that? I'm not an animal. I'm not a porn star. I need a break.
Tom Kenneth
Well, I think what the defense is doing here, and it's a product of how the prosecution is, is trying this case and it's very deliberate what they're doing. It's. It's not uncommon for federal prosecutors to do this, particularly in the Southern District, is they try to marry really unseemly behaviors, morally contemptible behaviors. There's a line in the Weinstein trial I need to keep going back to that, is that there's a lot of real estate between immorality and illegality.
Maureen
Right?
Tom Kenneth
But the notion is that, you know, if you. If you paint him as such a. A horrible, abusive, psychologically abusive and opportunistic partner, the spouse, boyfriend, lover, paramore, what have you, that, you know, inevitably bleeds over to the jury, and they're more likely to convict him, regardless of whatever uncertainty they may have as to whether in fact, he actually a sex trafficker. If I'm the defense, you know, you really have no choice. You know, sometimes you have to try to turn your weaknesses into advantages or make lemonade out of. Out of lemons, as we. We. We sometimes say, or baby oil. I'm not touching that one. You know, and you try to argue that, look, you know, yeah, this guy, he's a bad guy. He may be an abusive partner, he may be this, he may be that. But this is not a referendum on what sort of soulmate my client is. This is. This is a case about whether this is an individual that engages in sex trafficking by fraud, force of coercion, very, very serious charges, and much different than what the government has produced here, however unsavory. And you try and flip the script and you say, look, ladies and gentlemen, you know, think of it. Think of how much you heard in this case. You know, it really had to do with, you know, what a bad guy my client is. Well, my client could be a bad guy and at the same time, not guilty of the crimes that the federal government is accusing him of in this case.
Maureen
Tom, also, you know, I only have a couple of minutes left with you, unfortunately, I could talk to you all day. So what came out in court either a couple of days ago or yesterday was Jane Doe has testified that there is an icon in the music industry in the hip hop community who is very close to Sean Combs personally and professionally for many years, and that this icon and his girlfriend were participating in some of these, quote unquote, sex parties. How is it that these names are not coming out in court? How is it that they are so anonymized and protected?
Tom Kenneth
Well, that's usually the product of pretrial motions, usually on the. At the behest of the government where they seek to protect the names of, you know, victims. It's not clear if these individuals were victims or just participants.
Maureen
Jane's saying he was a participant, not a victim.
Tom Kenneth
Right? Right. Well, yeah, I mean, look, you know, if he's a participant, I don't know what the logic is and why the court has any obligation to protect that individual's name. Now, if he's a witness or potential witness in the trial, the government may make a motion to keep him anonymous because you don't want to intimidate him from coming or her from coming forward.
Maureen
Interesting.
Tom Kenneth
That can be the basis if they're, if the government makes a showing that, look, they're at risk risk that that Diddy or his entourage of have threatened witnesses in the past. That's an allegation that I know has been been made during this case by the government in a lot of the pre trial litigation. That can be a basis for it. But again, you know, the fact that somebody participates in, you know, sexual hijinks, call it a free, free cough or what have you, doesn't mean that they're guilty of a crime. Doesn't mean that they were coerced. Doesn't mean that they were forced. So the job for the defense here is to try to convince the jury that, you know, they need to separate the unsavory conduct and look at whether or not the, the government has proven or, or for the defense's sake, hopefully failed to prove the actual criminal conduct.
Maureen
Last question. Optically, Sean Combs is. Three of his sons have begun returning to the courtroom to attend this trial to support their father. Would you recommend that? And we're not talking like middle aged sons, we're talking sons who look to be late teens, early 20s. Is that a good look for Sean Combs or no?
Tom Kenneth
Generally it's a, it's a good look. I mean, you know, the idea is that, you know, obviously a jury is not supposed to vote one way or the other based on sympathy for the defendant or sympathy for the prosecution or prosecution witnesses. But if you're the defense and you have an opportunity, of course, ethically and appropriately, trials are public trials. Anyone has the right to get in. Usually there's special seating reserved in a high profile trial for the family or very close friends of the defendant. You know, you want to use every advantage you have. And if his having his children in court can humanize their, the defendant in a trial that a prosecution that seems to be trying very hard to strip him of any, any sense of humanity in front of the jury, that's generally a good thing to do. I mean, that could be blowback. If it's a very young child, you know, someone who's out of tender years, they're like, well, they don't belong being in a courtroom like this, hearing this sort of testimony. But if they're adult children, it's potential advantage.
Maureen
Again, what's a little baby oil and ejaculate among close family members? Thank you Tom, for joining the Nerve, and we hope to have you back as this most fascinating trial continues to unfold in downtown New York City. Thank you, Tom.
Tom Kenneth
Sounds good. Thanks for having me again.

We are back. First up this week's advice column picks from the brain trust over at the New York Times magazine. Now, it was a real Sophie's choice among questions and answers, but we're going to keep it tight. Okay? Product pro. Sorry, this is, I believe is this style section. Where did I pull this from? Social cues. Style section. Protocol after a breakup. I was with my ex boyfriend for about a year. I developed a rapport with his college age son after I initially it's unclear the. Oh, this is an assigned ex girlfriend. Okay, so now we know. After I initiated an amicable breakup with my ex, I texted the son a few times. He responded. He hasn't replied applied to my last two texts though. Now his birthday is approaching and I am inclined to send him a simple happy birthday text. Though I expect it will also be met with radio silence. I suspect that my ex may not be happy about my continued contact with his son. What do I do? Lady, stop texting this kid. He's in college. He thinks it's creepy and it is. Leave him alone. Hold off on visitors. These are the kinds of questions that people write into the New York Times, I suspect because they've exhausted their friends and family with their subtle attempts at humble bragging. So now we go to the pages of the New York Times. My husband and I are buying a second home in Palm Springs. Fancy, fancy. We've never had one before. That's the humble brag, right? We intend to host family and friends during the winter months, but it seems to us that we should probably establish ground rules as to ensure that no one overstays a welcome freeloads or alienates other guest suggestions. Why don't you just move in first? Okay. Get through the clothes, get through furnishing this place and you know, settling into your new mortgage and costs before you worry about like you invite guests, you say, would you like to come? Beginning here, ending here. Want to come? Great. Everything else takes care of itself. Unless you know a bunch of garbage people, which you might because you sound like kind of a garbage person. Okay, dream job versus camp obligations. I am 23. In January, I accepted a job as one of four heads of living quarters at summer camp I went to as a child. Separately, I applied for a full time job in my dream field. She got the dream job. Should she take it? Yes, take it. Okay. Book club expulsion. I joined a book club that started during the pandemic. We held meetings on Zoom. Now we meet in person, but one member lives far away, so he still joins by Zoom. The setup takes effort, so we only meet at the home of the group's founder, which limits opportunities for shared hosting. It also requires these people. It also requires that we squeeze into the camera frame. Shouldn't the distant member step aside now that we are meeting in person? That person should eject from your little mean girls group post haste. Okay, now we are getting to audience email and comments. I have to start with again, we are getting tons and tons of feedback still on Bill Maher, which I love because he's really. This whole thing is really landing with you troublemakers. Now this one, this person must remain anonymous. But this is so. There's a lot of color in it. Subject Bill Mar Paid Audience member Dear Maureen, I am a Bill Maher audience member. His entire audience of about 35 people each Friday is a paid audience. 35 people. PTA meetings have more attendees. Usually it's almost entirely paid audience. We are told to laugh and clap at everything. And each week we are reviewed on how much energy we brought to the show. Also, you are correct, there are two extremely loud people, including the man who yells out, yeah, he is a big tall actor who is given a special seat. There is one woman in particular who has a very loud, distinctive laugh. Once you hear their laughs, you can never unhear them. And this is so great to know because I thought these were just pre records that they would plug in. But no, they've got live people in there. They've got like Stasi members in there. Okay. The company that supplies the audience is called Standing Room Only. Almost all of the weekly audience are repeat regulars and they are paid about $70. By the way, your show seems very authentic and I loved it when you called the Nerva Baby Show. I think we're entering our teenage years. We're getting kind of bratty and kind of spiky. Okay. This, I was also reminded of this. I. I never forgot it. And I wanted to think that maybe Bill had outgrown this particular peccadillo, but I don't think so. Because back when he was doing Politically Incorrect on abc, there were rumors that guests did not want to shake his hand upon entering that set. And this will explain why. A piece for Vanity Fair in by James Walcott in 1997. Individual choice. That's what his show is all about. Oh, by the way, this piece also says that according to an article in US News & World Report, Marr, excuse me, was an English major at Cornell. His favorite book was Heart of Darkness. When I tell you these guys always show who they really are. They do. Heart of Darkness. Subtle yet he confesses that he hasn't read a book in years and that his quote, shelves feature not Joseph Conrad but bound volumes of Playboy. Oh, okay. Entertainment Weekly, according to this James Walcott 97 profile for VF reported that Mar has been rumored to swing solo on the set of his show. This is graphic. I'm going to warn you. Masturbating in his dressing room before a broadcast. It's a charge he half heartedly acknowledges. Quote, I'm sure I have. He told ew. I wouldn't say it's a ritual. I mean, we've all been horny and had to relieve ourselves, but it's not like, oh, it's five, ten, I don't want to be disturbed for the next eight and a half minutes. I think it's exactly like that. Just my opinion. What a freak. Maureen. In regards to Bill Maher, Gabby Petito's parents might help him understand how domestic violence doesn't just happen right out of the gate. Look what happened to Gabby. Even after people reported seeing Brian Laundrie hit her in public, the cops blamed her and a few days later, a preventable tragedy struck. Transactions. This is another one. These are comments from our YouTube channel. Transactional is exactly how to describe the women Bill has dated. He's famous, but not famous enough. These are the digs that the knives that really slide in. He's famous, but not famous enough to be with really famous people. People. Playboy Mansion, Yes. Diddy party. No. Oh, my God. Troublemaker. I love you. Another one. If Bill wants proof that police sometimes don't get it, he should read up on the Gabby Petito situation. Textbook Bill Maher. One, two clock. That's in reference to that. This is Bill Maher's patented move when he really, really just has contempt for an invited guest's opinion on his show. It's, it's so. It's very preemie. I was reminded after the segment that we did on George Clooney lecturing journalists on how to be journalists, even though he's just an actor playing a journalist on TV and Broadway, of Clooney lecturing the media after Princess Diana died, he got up on a lectern and oppressor and said, it's your fault Princess Diana is dead. And who do we see about that? Well, George, you know, the very people whose favor you're trying to curry. Okay. SJP said she feels like she's being crucified for the show. By the way, one of you troublemakers sent in an illustration to die for of sjp as Carrie Bradshaw on a cross. As a Catholic, I feel fully entitled to hammer in the last nail. This series has only one real flaw. It exists for the art challenge. Can the nails please be Christian Louboutin heels? I would like to challenge Troublemakers to those artists of you out there. I'm looking for a freestanding sculpture of SJP on the cross and finally, would love for you to start giving book recommendations. This Trouble Troublemaker needs some good books to read. I am actively thinking about this. I'm actively thinking whether it should be current fiction, nonfiction, or if it should be, you know, things that are maybe a little bit older but that I think you guys would enjoy. But I'm on it. Oh, so I have to go to this one from. She signs off troublemaker. K. Are you okay? After this episode, Bill Maher is going down and not in a good way. Your lips to gods. Okay. Michelle Obama. How is she not defining her life before today? Isn't this her third or fourth book that's coming out in November? She just seems like a person who loves the sound of her own voice. Agreed. And to George Clooney. All I know of his father is he was in the ending scene of Clooney's Monuments Men film, which bombed epic bomb, playing an older version of George's character. You can't act TV on stage because you have to project more on stage to get to the audience members in the back of the room. But she reminds me, and my bad, he has been to space. Remember? He floated into space in gravity. How could I have forgotten? Okay, you guys, you knocked it out of the park this week. You knocked it out of the park. Your dermatologist about Cosentyx. Welcome back to your Friday edition of the Nerve. And so I went and I watched it front to back and I nearly blacked out. Now I'm gonna set this up for you a little bit. Bill is proudly telling his pal Jerry that he was once kicked out of a party. It sounds like a house party, but it could have been at a venue, who knows? He was kicked out of a party because a girl, I believe that was the parlance he used, had attempted to jump the line to get into the bathroom. And well, this just does not sit well with Bill because if he stands for nothing, it's for justice and things that are morally correct. And you know, without thinking to himself, wow, maybe this girl's having an emergency. Maybe this girl might have just gotten her period and she's just desperately trying to get in there. Whatever the reason, just, just let it be. But no, Bill Maher is telling this story of the moment. He fully suited up as a superhero and not only stopped this girl from cutting the line, but went a step further. And watch, watch his little the hand flourish as he talks about how she tried to Paris Hilton her way to the front of the line. Take a look.
Bill Maher
If there's a line for the bathroom, you don't get to cut in line. I think that's somewhat the essence of courtesy. I once got thrown out of a party because someone tried to cut in line and I bodily picked them up. It was a girl, she just thought she could Paris Hilton her way into the. And I was like, sweetheart, we all feel the same and we have to go to the bathroom. Fantastic.
Maureen
How did she react?
Bill Maher
It was screaming. It was like, put me down. What are you doing? You picked her up.
Maureen
Do you regret that?
Bill Maher
Not in the least.
Maureen
Okay. She was screaming and she said, put me down. And he's laughing about it and then says he doesn't regret it in the least. So that's Bill Maher for you. Okay, retraction and apology. Troublemakers keep putting the pressure on. I know HBO is getting a lot of it, a lot of it. And what they say goes, you know, so Bill, retraction, apology. And that also reminded me, by the way, of back when Jerry seinfeld, around age 38 and he was a huge, huge TV star. He was like the hottest thing going. He began dating a teenage girl, a 17 year old named Shoshana Lonstein, who he reportedly met in Central Park. And so I went back and looked up and pulled it for you guys, this cover of People magazine. It's dated March 28, 1994. And the headline, look who's in love. Look who's in love. There's nothing remotely unseemly or perhaps predatory about a middle aged man with a ton of money and fame and power dating a girl who's still in high school. And I'm gonna guess she was a junior, I'm gonna guess, you know, and when they came out with their relationship, when it was, or, or they were forced to, I believe they always tried to shift that timeline to make her 18 when they got like really like they became a thing, you know. But this is, this is important because it goes to how the entire media industrial complex, and especially the entertainment media, which is all about just keeping access to these power players and never ever, ever raising an eyebrow or, you know, asking a question that might offend these people, you know, so they frame it as like, this is. Well, it's weird. It's. Yeah, it's a little weird. But like, I guess her parents are okay with it and if her parents are okay with it, like, who among us are we to like judge it? You know? And this is sick. It's sick. And it gets into the water supply and it gets into the ether and the oxygen. And before we know it, we too, like abused women are gaslit and we're like, well, am I being like an overly judgmental, like prude or am I seeing something that doesn't quite track, like a 40 something Woody Allen in Manhattan in that film dating Mariel Hemingway, who was like 16 at the time she was cast and she was playing a 16 year old girl. She would literally say in the movie like, I can't meet up with you, I have school tomorrow, I have homework. And you know, she fairly recently said that Woody Allen, like either during that shoot or after that shoot, tried to get her to go to Paris with him alone and tried to get her to sleep with him. Anyway, Jerry Seinfeld went on to marry a woman he met at his local gym. And you know, this isn't like a crunch or an equinox. You know, he's at a fancy, fancy gym where fancy people go. And his current wife is a woman he met there who at the time was like three weeks in to her marriage to a Broadway scion and ditched that guy right quick for Jerry Seinfeld, who I guess had much deeper pockets. So, you know, I, I always wonder about that marriage. I always wonder about that marriage because, you know, they always, they always, they're all over social media putting up perfect family photos And I just don't think it can be that way, especially when you start out like that. I just don't think it can be that way. I interviewed her once, Jessica Seinfeld. I was sent by the New York Post at the time, had a magazine, it was like, Page Six magazine, but it was much. It was toothless. It was like, take Page Six, remove the spine, remove the teeth, and remove eyes and ears, and just send someone in and just to, like, fluff, oh, the wife of a celebrity. And so I was trying to make it interesting, and I was trying to. To craft some sort of interview and resulting piece that would be worth reading. And I found out, you know, of course, the. The issue of meeting Jerry and. And divorcing the. I think it was a Nederlander that she married that that was off the off could not do that. But of course, I didn't tell my editor this. I found out that she had changed her name. Her real birth name, I believe, was Nicole. And at some point in her life when she. I think she was originally from Long island, moved to the city, changed her name, and I thought that was interesting. And so halfway into this otherwise really boring, thunderingly boring conversation, I say to her, like, oh, you know, I was doing some reading on you, and I read that, like, your first name was originally Nicole. And I'm wondering, you know, why you changed your name to Jessica. I was escorted out. I was escorted out of the building, and by the time I got back to my office, my editor had received a phone call and that piece was killed. That's a little behind the scenes of the inner workings of celebrity profiles. Okay, now moving on to Greta Thunberg. Okay, we have an update. This is so good. Oh, my God, it's so good. After the IDF interrupted her little freedom flotilla. Excuse me. It's like Confessions of a Female Flounder. A flotilla, whatever. They. They said to Greta, we are going to have you watch the footage of the October 7 attacks, the footage that I was telling you about on the last show. And, you know, like the coward she is, she refused to do it. So the Israeli government did the expedient thing. They said, good riddance to bad rubbish. They put her on a commercial flight. These are the indignities, okay? Because someone like a Greta Thunberg is used to, like, camera crews and, like, professional lighting and all that stuff. I. They stripped her of the cafe, it looks like, and they put her on a commercial flight, and they sat her in the back row near the bathrooms. And you could. There's Footage going around online. You could see like just regular people on the plane going, oh my God, that's Greta freaking Thunberg and taking photos and videos and she's. She looks like a zoo animal and it's just amazing. It's amazing. And then she lands in Sweden and she's asked about some of her cohorts on this little voyage. And these are people, by the way, with serious, serious deep ties to Hamas and Hezbollah. Okay. I'm sure they're really fun to travel with. I'm sure they're great. I'm sure they're great company. So per the Daily Mail, which has just been killing it with this stuff, when asked about why she did not know the views of the people she was traveling with, she said, quote, because I haven't had a phone. I relate. I can relate. I hate it when you lose your phone, as I just did, and you can't wiki the terrorist ties and activities of your brand new friends. I hate when that happen. I mean. Okay, okay. She was then challenged by reporters who asked why she had not looked into this issue before she set off to Gaza. I quote, I could not make this up. I quote, imagine me doing this dramatic reading with a cafe. A dramatic. I'm swathed in it and I've just lop about, lop my lower body off. Okay. I'm four feet tall. I resemble a medically teenage dwarf. Okay, quote, should I ask exactly everyone what exactly they have said about everything? It would take some time. Okay, well, I'm gonna fill her in. Okay. Zahir Barawi, if I'm saying that correctly, who organized this mission, this sailing voyage to Gaza, is the head of the Europa Forum, which is real designated as a terrorist organization in 2021. And he has previously been pictured with the former Hamas leader who was assassinated by Israel last year. Meanwhile, another activist on this post, a Brazilian national named Thiago Avila, reportedly attended Hezbollah leader Hassan Misrallah's funeral in Beirut last year. And he wrote on social media that he was inspired by the Lebanese terror chief. I mean, if this girl isn't on social media every minute of the day just looking for dopamine hits of media coverage of her, frankly, really embarrassing and morally depraved exploits. I have no idea. But you know what? We are in luck. Troublemakers, okay? Because it turns out that Greta's not the only talent in that family. Into my feed again. Thank you, algorithm. I'm sure you will turn on me one day. Here comes her sister, Beata Thunberg. And now she goes by BE Erman. So be, you know, climate change, political geopolitical activism. Not for her. BE wants to be Beyonce. Okay? Be wants to be a global musical sensation. And she has used the publicity surrounding Greta's humiliation, detention and release by Israel to post this to social media. Again, thanks to the Daily Mail, who picked it up and put it on their Instagram. Wow. I think her parent. I think these parents might actually hate their kids. I think they might. I think they might. Now, if you didn't catch it on. On the first viewing and you got to look at this part of the show, there is a lot going on amid that caterwauling. So no shame here, but I would encourage you to go back and take a look on the lower screen of that. I mean, to call it a performance is a generous thing. But if you go back and you take a look at the family photos that are underneath of Greta and BE as toddlers, these. These are not happy children. I mean, big surprise. But like, Greta looks like she's two and she has the same exact face. People who have the same exact face as, like, toddlers and adults, I marvel at them. You know, I feel like. Like it's often not a beauty. Sometimes it is, but usually it's not. And. And Greta has that, like, consternated, constipated old lady face, even at 2. Like, her eyebrows are like. She's like, you know, I mean, you. You have to marvel at that parenting, allegedly. I mean, I would. They should write a book. They should do a reality show. The Thunberg should do a reality show. I would pitch that to tlc. Give the Thunbergs a reality show. Okay, now a few more updates. The viral podcast video of Brooke Shields. I talked about this with Kinsey Schofield on a recent show. A video. It was video of Brooke Shields. She was on India Hicks's podcast. India Hicks is a goddaughter of King Charles and she was a flower girl at his wedding to Princess Diana. So she went on India Hicks's podcast and talked about calling Meghan Markle precious too. Precious is the quote. And how she interrupted her boring self righteous origin story involving dish soap at a South by Southwest panel because she was losing the crowd. And. And, and so Brooke said. I countered with, when I was 11, I played a prostitute in a major motion picture that has since been scrubbed from the Internet. I think someone in Montecito still doesn't understand why we all believe and have great reason to believe that she doesn't have a sense of humor. Oh, and another, another dream deferred. Okay. The LA gala at which she was to be given another meaningless award meant to show the British royal families you know, who what's what and who's who. You know, King Charles, you know, he's got cancer and it's his birthday and it's trooping the color and the British populace is coming out to cheer him on and celebrate king and country. Well, you know, Meghan's getting an award. It's some bullshit LA gala, well, that's been called off due to the LA riots. So, you know, just hold tight for another degrading thirst trap on Instagram. Okay, Michelle Obama, another entry. She has just posted a quote, unquote interview with Bruce Springsteen. And I say, I say quote, unquote interview. Because we're going, we're going to break this into two parts. And in the first part, Michelle Obama is making Bruce Springsteen. And you can tell in this, you can tell he's gutting this out. He's gutting this out and just like playing along because it's easier than taking the nearest spoon and attempting to gouge his eyes out. He's got to pay fealty to the great Michelle Obama. Watch this.
Lily
Last time I saw you was on stage in Barcelona.
Bill Maher
That's right. And you did an excellent job as a backup singer. May I say.
Maureen
Now we're watching. Michelle, who really dance is like a middle aged white woman. I'm just gonna say it. Oh, she's having such a great time on the stage.
Bill Maher
You did an excellent job as a backup singer. That was tamborinas.
Lily
That tam. I think I worked the tambourine pretty good.
Bill Maher
You did.
Maureen
Oh my God. I think I worked the tambourine pretty good. I'll say that again once more, how great I was on stage. I'm pretty good, right? I'm. I'm good, right? That was great. And he's like, he's doing that Bruce laugh where it's like, like the teeth are barely separated and like the Botox. Whatever. Okay, so. And I'm a Bruce fan, by the way. I have been. I don't. I think he's making a huge mistake getting into politics. Just stick to what you do, Bruce. Okay. But let's listen to her piercing, original insights that she's bringing to this conversation. Now. Bruce Springsteen is someone that her public enemy number one name, Barack Obama has been really good friends with Bruce Springsteen for many years now. Okay. They did a podcast together, they did a book together. When you see them together, they genuinely seem to enjoy Each other's company. They both grew up with difficult absentee fathers. That is their bond. And so you would think that Michelle would have some personal insight, some like, emotional investiture to bring to this interview with Bruce and to elicit a side of him, something that maybe we have not seen before. Right, right. See, let's see.
Lily
And I told you about this. Like, you play for three hours.
Bill Maher
What else can I do?
Lily
I, you know, you could do two. You could do, but you play for three hours non stop. Yeah, non stop. I mean, you don't talk much. No, you, you sing through and move through the whole thing. It's incredible to watch you perform.
Bill Maher
We put the pedal to the metal from first note to last.
Lily
Ye.
Maureen
Bruce has thoroughly checked out. He has left his body. He is levitating in another room with fun, smart, interesting people, this Michelle Obama. You know what you do to the Boss? You know what you do? You play for three hours and you don't stop. You play for three hours. And he's like, he's going like, okay, what else can I do? What else? I put the pedal to the metal. What else can I do? You know, he's thinking like, I can't believe I have to do my friend Barack a solid as he, I think I theorize, is exiting this marriage. Okay, he's, he's, he's parachuting out and he's trying to get Michelle set up with something, a podcast, book deals, whatever, so that she's got something to focus her energy on aside from dragging him through the mud. And so he's like, bruce, do me a favor, just sit with her. Just please sit with her. And you can tell he's cutting it out. I am. Michelle. Michelle, the world has known for like 50 years that Bruce Springsteen plays for at least three hours a show, every show, rain or shine. Sometimes he goes for four. He's like the Tom Cruise of rock and roll. You're gonna get your money's worth. But she's talking about this like she just discovered this unknown, fascinating fact about Bruce Springsteen. He plays three hours a night. My mind is blown. Okay, Ben Affleck news out of his camp after JLo's vag flashing death jiggle at a pride event this week. And we're gonna got a mini nerve for you. I love you. We have a mini nerve for you. We're going to get into that more this weekend. So the Daily Mail again, killing it. I call him there twice a week and I'm so this. What, what news gathering. They got this amazing photo of Ben. And again, I miss Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol would have loved Ben Affleck smoking a cigarette. This is our favorite. Ben smoking a cigarette in his car while looking extremely stressed out. This is, this is my favorite Ben. Aside from the Ben who would be stress gobbling fast food in his car when he was married to, to JLo, that health nut. Right? Okay. So anyway, we get this report from an Affleck insider, which I believe means it's like stamp of approval. Send it out to the mail, let them know and everybody else can pick it up. He is, quote, ready to lose millions to unload their $60 million marital mansion. So he can, he's, he's made it clear, like I'm all but quoting, he can completely sever that last tie to her. He wants to be done. He wants nothing to do with her. And again, you know, as her one time boyfriend and mentor, Diddy sits in federal court. I'm just saying. Okay. And finally, Brad Pitt is out there promoting his new movie F1. And he showed up recently, I think it was in Mexico and he looked great, I gotta say. He's wearing this like lilac suit and like a, a masculine guy who can pull off lilac. I mean that is like, that's a swerve. That is a, that's, that is a talent in and of itself. I will say. I'll give it to him. But you know, so he's promoting this movie, which is a very masculine movie. It's about the world of race cars and professional race car driving. But you know, you got to get women in the seats. And you know what puts women in movie seats faster than anything is having your camp leaked to the press. And again they did it to the Daily Mail. This is where they go for these exclusives, these A listers. So Pitt and his or his camp, to be fair, his camp leaked that this 61 year old father of six has deemed his relationships with his two adopted sons, I think Salient Maddox and Pax, quote, unfixable. And that I think in the case of Pax, that he just doesn't care what this kid does anymore. It's not his concern. Pit may be the father, but it's, it's not his concern. Okay? Maddox is 23 and Pax is now 21. And it's important to remember that when Angelina adopted Pax in 2007 from Vietnam, he was a three year old who had grown up in that orphanage and he had a completely different name. It was Fam Huang Sang. And I Mean, I guess that just wasn't cool enough to be a kid of Brad and Angie's, you know, they just had to have all their sons have names that end in X because it's very cool, it's very rock and roll. They're such rebels. So you get Maddox, you get Packs, you get Knox. And by the way, at a certain point I am pretty sure I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure my deep reading of this stuff though these many years, comes to the fore. There was a point during Brad and Angie's initial separation, which was like an atom bomb going off, where Brad Pitt's team, I believe, leaked. And I remember because this was so savagely cruel, that he was against Angie and him. I mean, they were together adopting, adopting packs, you know, that he felt they already had too many kids and that bringing Pax into the family unit would just be really destructive and destabilizing. And whether he thought it through or not, it's still terrible because that child is going to grow up to be able to read that someday that their father in some substance, said he didn't want you. So is there any, any, any, is there any reason why these kids might be fucked up in the head? Is there any reason that Pax Jolie has maybe decided to drop the surname Pit, as have other children and has now been photographed, like outside the Chateau Marmont and videoed outside the Chateau Marmont being let out by a friend. Like, he seems blackout drunk, he's barely able to stand. He was apparently also at a strip club that night and, and was also having trouble just getting himself from point A to point B. This kid's been getting into e bike crashes all over LA and he's still not wearing a helmet, you know. And never forget, never forget what Pax reportedly posted to a private Instagram account. And this has never been denied by Pax, by Angie, by Brad, by anyone. This was a Father's day post in 2020 alongside a photo of Brad winning the best Oscar that year. And this is in reference to the infamous plane incident in which Brad was alleged to have attacked Angie and terrified the children. Pax wrote, quote, happy Father's Day to this world class asshole. You time and time again prove yourself to be a terrible and despicable person. You have no consideration or empathy towards your four youngest children who tremble in fear when in your presence. Pax went on to say that Pitt would, quote, never understand the damage he inflicted because he is, quote, incapable of doing so. I continue. You have made the lives of those closest to me, a constant hell. You may tell yourself in the world whatever you want, but the truth will come to light. Someday one of these kids is going to write a memoir. They're going to get a monster book deal. Trust me. Now, this post was originally published again by the Daily Mail, who also contacted Angie and Brad. And both camps declined to comment. And that tells us a lot. But you know, don't if you think any again, any of these outlets covering Brad on this press tour are going to have the guts to ask him about a statement from his camp about cutting off two of his six children, two adopted children of at that like, no, they're never going to do it. They're going to be like, brad, you look so great. What's your secret? You going to make a movie with Tom Cruise? Would you do that, Brad? You know, but we troublemakers here at the Nerve, we have long memories. So good luck. Good luck selling your movie, Brad. And that is it for your Friday edition of the Nerve. Release Date: June 13, 2025
Host: Maureen Callahan (MK Media)
Topics Covered: Diddy Trial Bombshells, Bill Maher’s Show Secrets Uncovered, Brad Pitt Cutting Ties With Two Kids
Maureen Callahan opens the episode with a personal story about losing her iPhone in Brooklyn, highlighting her temporary disconnection from technology and reflecting on the stereotypical portrayals of New Yorkers. She shares gratitude towards her friend Kim for her support during this stressful time, setting a warm and relatable tone for the episode.
Maureen [01:05]: "I lost my iPhone yesterday on the streets of Brooklyn, and it was incredibly destabilizing... I have no Instagram, no Venmo, no ways... Kim texted me... these are the kinds of people who truly make New York City one of the greatest cities on the planet."
The main segment delves into the ongoing trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs, focusing on recent testimonies and strategic legal maneuvers. Maureen interviews Tom Kenneth, a top US criminal defense attorney, to dissect the complexities of the case.
Key Points:
Week Five of the Trial: The prosecution has been building their case meticulously, with significant attention on the star witness, Cassie Ventura, who recently gave birth.
Jane Doe's Testimony: The pseudonymous Jane Doe, Diddy's girlfriend and alleged victim, has been a focal point, testifying for six consecutive days. Her dual role as both a participant and a victim presents a challenging narrative for the prosecution.
Defensive Strategies: Tom Kenneth discusses how the prosecution's prolonged testimony might familiarize the jury with Jane Doe, potentially biasing them in her favor. He draws parallels to the Harvey Weinstein trial, noting similar tactics used to question the credibility of witnesses based on their ongoing relationships with the accused.
Tom Kenneth [06:06]: "Six day witnesses. And there was no talk about my client's sex life either."
Tom Kenneth [07:50]: "The longer they keep her on the stand, the jury may develop more of an affection for her... it's a problem you see in virtually every high profile sex case."
Discussion on Restitution Funds:
Maureen and Tom explore the opaque nature of restitution funds cited in such trials, questioning their sources and the decision-making process behind their distribution.
Tom Kenneth [10:43]: "These restitution funds can come from a lot of different sources... they are the product of an order of restitution that the court imposes."
Impact of Family Dynamics:
The episode also touches on the visual presence of Diddy's adult sons in the courtroom, analyzing how this move may humanize him in the eyes of the jury.
Tom Kenneth [18:13]: "If his having his children in court can humanize their, the defendant in a trial... that's generally a good thing to do."
Maureen presents a selection of advice columns from the New York Times Magazine, offering humorous and blunt responses to reader questions about social etiquette and personal dilemmas.
Highlighted Questions and Responses:
Protocol After a Breakup:
Question: How to handle continued contact with an ex's college-aged son after a breakup.
Response: "Stop texting this kid. He's in college. He thinks it's creepy and it is."
Buying a Second Home:
Question: Establishing ground rules for hosting family and friends in a new Palm Springs home.
Response: "Get through the clothes, get through furnishing this place... unless you know a bunch of garbage people."
Dream Job vs. Camp Obligations:
Question: Whether to take a dream job or continue with camp obligations.
Response: "Yes, take it."
Book Club Expulsion:
Question: Handling a distant member in an effort to foster in-person meetings.
Response: "That person should eject from your little mean girls group post haste."
A substantial portion of the episode is dedicated to audience feedback, particularly focusing on Bill Maher's show. Maureen reads and responds to various listener comments, blending humor with critical analysis.
Key Themes:
Paid Audience Dynamics: An anonymous listener describes Bill Maher's live audience as small, paid repeaters who are encouraged to laugh and clap insincerely, diminishing the authenticity of reactions.
Behavior on Set: Criticism of Bill Maher's behavior, including anecdotes from past relationships and allegations of inappropriate conduct, painting a less favorable picture of the host.
Public Persona vs. Reality: Audience members express frustration with Maher's perceived hypocrisy and lack of genuine engagement, contrasting his public image with behind-the-scenes behaviors.
Audience Member [Unnamed]: "Bill is proudly telling his pal Jerry that he was once kicked out of a party because a girl tried to jump the line for the bathroom... he didn’t regret it in the least."
Maureen also references historical behavior, such as Jerry Seinfeld’s controversial relationships and Woody Allen’s misconduct, drawing parallels to contemporary issues in media and celebrity culture.
Maureen transitions to a series of high-profile celebrity updates, offering incisive commentary on various scandals and personal developments.
Greta Thunberg’s Flotilla Incident:
Maureen [36:08]: "She was put on a commercial flight and sat near the bathrooms... Greta looked like a zoo animal."
Brooke Shields and India Hicks Podcast:
Michelle Obama and Bruce Springsteen Interview:
Ben Affleck’s Marital Troubles:
Brad Pitt Cutting Ties with Two Sons:
Maureen [49:51]: "Pax wrote, 'happy Father's Day to this world class asshole... you have no consideration or empathy towards your four youngest children.'"
A brief segment features promotional content for Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon Dr. John Lakey, introducing his "Age Rewinder" method for smoothing wrinkles, described humorously by Maureen as “Photoshop for your face.”
Maureen wraps up the episode by emphasizing the ongoing discussions surrounding Bill Maher and teasing upcoming content, including updates on Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt. She encourages listeners to engage via email and social media, promoting community interaction and anticipation for future episodes.
Maureen on Losing Her Phone [01:05]: "I feel as though there's very little I can do. And then a friend of mine told me that last night or no, two nights ago was a strawberry moon. And apparently a strawberry moon causes all kinds of chaos."
Tom Kenneth on Witness Familiarity [06:39]: "The longer they keep her on the stand, the jury may develop more of an affection for her."
Bill Maher Anecdote [36:08]: "If there's a line for the bathroom, you don't get to cut in line... I bodily picked them up."
Brad Pitt’s Sons' Allegations [49:16]: "Happy Father's Day to this world class asshole... you have no consideration or empathy towards your four youngest children."
