I can't. I can't. I can't spoil the surprise. But you and I can get into it immediate with one Timothy Chalamet, who I always kind of want to just call Shyamalama Ding dong. So the Daily Mail is reporting that Timothy has dumped the Daily Mail's word Kylie Jenner after almost three years of dating. Um, now the source says that Timothy has indeed broken up with Kylie. But there's different reporting in People, which I think the Kardashians have on speed dial saying that they are going strong. Rob, what are you hearing?

Rob Shooter (5:17)

Yeah, a couple of things. I used to be a publicist back in the day, and I represented two really big stars during two, two really big breakups. One was Jennifer Lopez when she broke up with with Ben Affleck for the first time. I wrote their breakup statements. The other was Jessica Simpson when she broke up with Nick Lachey. Another statement that I wrote, it was clear both of these relationships were over for a while. However, People magazine would not run any stories about it, any speculation until a publicist confirmed it. So we do know that that People is the most cautious. They certainly take the the viewpoint of publicists or celebrities. So I don't absolutely, totally trust when they say that they are still together. Just from experience, I know that that has not been the case. Now, what is going on with Timothy? Yes, Timmy. I like to call him Timmy. And Kylie Jenner, we know. My reporting tells me they've broken up a million times. It's young love. They fall in, they fall out. They're angry. You upset me. I upse you I don't love you. I want to be. So they've gone back and forth many, many times. I think at the moment the mail is right and they are in a down period. My reporting tells me they're not over yet. They'll get back together. They'll probably break up again. It's really interesting because he is such, or at least he pretends to be a very private person. Although he is now on the COVID of a magazine. But he pretends to be private. She doesn't pretend to be private. It's complicated.

Maureen Callahan (6:49)

He's such a little wannabe serious artiste and you can't do that if you're dating a Kardashian Jenner. This whole off on thing, Rob, I think we should just have some. This is what I, I suspect based on my many years in and around these people, he's a, he's a famous young hot actor considered hot. He's got a lot of options, okay? The breakups may be ad hoc when he's like been catting around with whoever he's catting around with and then it's convenient to get back together with her when he feels like it. She's a mother, by the way. Okay. It's easy to forget because they act like children, but she is a mother. I think Timothy is gunning for an Oscar with this ping pong movie and I think he knows he's not gonna get it. You know, I think he really thought he was gonna win for his portrayal of Bob Dylan.

Rob Shooter (7:37)

Yeah, absolutely. Everybody thought he, he was gonna win. The studio thought he was gonna win. They even sat him in the winner's seat, which is normally on the aisle or right at the front when he. There was a shock and there was almost like an investigation in Hollywood to uncover almost like a political failed campaign. Why didn't this work? What was it about this movie, this process, this campaign that didn't connect? And all the results, I'm told, pointed their finger at Kylie Jenner.

Maureen Callahan (8:10)

Look at that. Look at that.

Rob Shooter (8:12)

Don't give Oscars. That isn't true. The public. You might win a people's choice if you date Kylie Jenner. They're very, very popular. There's no doub out. You just look at their, their followers on social media. There's still a real snobby elite group that run the Oscars. They really are. I've been a couple of times. They're not nice. These are not people who enjoy a Mission Impossible or a Wicked or a bucket of popcorn. These are the real filmy Types, they're a little annoying. Very annoying. And they do not take Verl to the Kardashians. So even if he gets back with Kylie, if they end up together, don't expect her to be walking red carpets with him, which is what she did last time she started to pop up on carpets. And that, that's the kiss of death in this snobby Oscar world. Once again, if it was an award for the people's choice or if it was a TikTok award, drag her out. But she ain't gonna win you any votes during the Oscar campaign.

Maureen Callahan (9:13)

I just love the idea that, like a failed presidential campaign, Timothy got a professional autopsy done as to why he did not win an Oscar for cosplaying as Bob Dylan. Now, Timmy is taking. This is my prediction for this Oscar season, this award season. Rob, we're bringing mommy out. We're bringing mommy to all the awards.

Oh, it's a good choice. You would make a fortune as a publicist. I'd pay you $8,000 a month for that advice. It's really good advice. Bring mommy if you've got a friend in a wheelchair. God forgive me. That always helps.

He took, if I may, the team at A24, the marketing team to the woodshed over how they're going to market this movie about a guy who wants to be a champion ping pong player. I mean, if this isn't ripe for an SNL parody, I don't know what is. He thinks this is a real Oscar campaign we're going for co starring Gwyneth, who we're going to talk about in a minute. So we're going to take a look, Rob, you and I, at Timothy Spanking. This marketing team, which we're seeing in, like, a zoom grid box so it looks like the Brady Bunch. And watch the marketing team's like, expressions as Timmy tells them how to get Marty Supreme. And we've got a shaved head now. Again, we're trying to be very masculine. Shaved head, wife beater. It's on. Here we go.

This has got to be, like, one of the most important things that happens.

On planet Earth this year. Rob, you worked as a publicist for many years. You dealt with out of their mind celebrities. What do you make of this?

Rob Shooter (12:18)

Couple of things. A, those type of zoom calls, those type of meetings are not as rare as you think. When you ask a celebrity who is a trained actor how to promote a movie, they often have zero idea and their ideas are all bad. And it's your job to gently guide them into a different direction. What I find astonishing about this is that we've got it. He released it. Had anybody else, those were eight of the faces on that screen. Had they released that, they would have been fired. There's just no way. These type of. Think about it. If you're on a zoom call for your job, whatever you do, if you run a zoom call and you leak that call, you will be fired. So this was not fired. So now the fact that he's released that and he thinks that's a good idea tells me that Kylie Jenner is the least of his problems. This is somebody with terrible judgment. This is not how you win. This makes you look like a fool. It makes the people you work with look sort of like a fool, too. All bad all the way around, but not that unsurprising that somebody like Timothy is doing this. I do think it's going to give us an indication, though. He's now in charge of. Of the PR campaign for this movie. He has taken sole responsibility. That video has just set him up to be the boss. So it either rises or it falls on his shoulders. He's decided to take this on. So good luck. I don't. I don't see it myself. I think actors should stick to acting, but good luck.

Maureen Callahan (13:48)

I wonder how this is going to go. You're so right. He released it. Marlena and I were debating, like, how this get out. Who would have thought this was a good idea? Because I would think in the interest of self preservation, he would be like rolling heads over at a 24. But you're right. He thinks he looks like a baller, like a badass. Like he's running this I love. First of all, he looks unwashed. He looks disgusting. He's in some janky hotel room. He's like, we gotta be intentional. My word of the decade. Intentional. We gotta be relentless. Gee, thanks, Tim. Thanks. Anybody who's putting anything. You're about to put a book out. You know how it is, trying to pierce the culture, make some noise. Of course you have to be relentless, you dummy. All right, let's take a look at part of the trailer for Marty supreme, this movie that he thinks is gonna get him Oscar gold. Here we go. I have a purpose. Okay, let me ask you something. Do you make money at this little table tennis thing?

Okay, that's funny. That's funny. So he's sleeping with Gwyneth Paltrow, who's like 20 years older than he is. She looks far better than he does. He looks like a pimply. This is also, I think, very perverse. This is Hollywood's perversion. He looks like a 12 year old boy. He's got pimples, acne, barely any facial hair. It's a disturbing tableau. And then we're down then, Rob, we're down in the underworld. It's not gun running, it's not drugs. It's not life or death. It's ping pong, Right? I mean, come on. Come on. Who greenlit this shit? Are you kidding me? I know it's a safdie, brother, but it doesn't matter. Are they punking us?

Rob Shooter (15:48)

Are they actually punking us? Like, this is so strange, it's so ridiculous. It's clearly a company, a movie studio that has given up their reins to a 12 year old boy, however old he might be. This is just a terrible decision. And this is why actors feel like they can get away with everything, because they can. Professionally, they can. If any other junior person at your company, think about where you work today, whether it be a restaurant or a store or an office. If a junior person walked into a meeting and gave us nonsense advice and then leaked the video, would they still be working there? And the answer is no. And if the answer is yes, leave that job. It's not a good company.

Maureen Callahan (16:37)

It's so true. Rob, I wanted to talk to you a bit about, you know, we saw yet another big actor with a big movie belly flop at the box office this weekend. That's Glen Powell with The Running Man, $110 million budget made, debuted at 17 million domestically at the box office globally, a total, including our domestic run, of 28 million. This is like the 25th major flop in a row that Hollywood has put out. Will the power balance shift away from these idiot, overpaid actors who clearly can no longer open movies?

Rob Shooter (17:16)

Yeah. Yeah, he has to, or else they'll no longer be a Hollywood anymore. I had a theory a couple of weeks ago when we started to talk about this trend on your show that often these actors like the Rock and JLo were putting these arty farty movies because they wanted Oscars and they were playing against type. Nobody wants to see the Rock in a movie where he's not being butch and tough and running around. We want an action movie from him with JLo, too. We want a specific type type of movie. My theory's completely wrong now because Mr. Powell did the movie that we wanted him to do. It's exactly the sort of movie that you hire Glenn for. My insiders in Hollywood are telling me that they are much more upset and concerned about the failure of Glenn's movie than they are about the Rock or J. Lo's or the other flops. Because this is a movie that should have worked. It's an action movie with a hot guy, with not the smartest guy who's not wearing a shirt. And I think what it is here is we're so desperate to make these people into movie stars that they're not. Glenn Powell is not a movie star.

Maureen Callahan (18:23)

He's not opening a movie.

Rob Shooter (18:25)

He's not a movie star. You know, he was on the Tom Cruise movie, but he was in the background. It was the Tom Cruise movie. You know, they get carried away with themselves. And I think that in many careers, they want to go from 1 to 100 overnight. 20, 30 years ago, Julia Roberts, these actresses, Sandra Bullock had to build up their resumes. Even Tom Cruise did not start as Tom Cruise. Being in a hit movie doesn't make you a star. Keep making movies where you're not soldiering, carrying the whole movie on your back. Don't let your ego get ahead of you just because you're on the COVID of some magazines, just because you get some Publicity don't make you a movie star. People are really smart out there and like it's expensive to go to the movies. And so why would I leave my house and why would I do this? And Glenn Powell is not that guy. I think it's going to be really a rude awakening to him because he thought he was it. He really believed, he thought he was.

Maureen Callahan (19:22)

The next leading man.

Rob Shooter (19:23)

He was the next.

Maureen Callahan (19:25)

It's not, you know, there's, I don't see, I don't know who among that generation of actors is the next big male leading man in a matinee idol kind of way. I think it's, I think it's over.

Rob Shooter (19:37)

I think it's over. I think it's over. I think celebrities changing, I think that the sooner movie companies realize it's gotta be story driven, it's got, it can't be, it can't be actor driven anymore because the Internet, social media, there's just so many different stimuluses now. There's no longer just one or two movie stars or one or two famous people. There might be one or two movie stars, but now everyone's famous for a minute. But that doesn't mean you can open a movie. They try it all the time on tv on Dancing with the Stars and these competition shows. They always try to hire TikTok personalities. It never translates. They never come over and watch tv. And so to get people in the movies now, it's not as simple as just hiring a big name actor. It's got to be, it's got to be the role, it's got to be the buzz. You've got to create an event. Good grief, I sound like Timothy Chalamet and I in the Zoom Call.

Maureen Callahan (20:25)

At least you didn't say intentional. So I'll give you all the credit for that for sure. Okay, Meghan Markle.

Our holiday special is going to drop on December 3rd. We're looking at a little bit of her as ever promo because what says holiday like wandering around a sun drenched orchard with sweater jauntily hanging off of our shoulders just so nothing says Christmas like that tableau. Now, per the Daily Express us via the royalist, Netflix is getting ready to drop the ax and send this woman limb by limb into our woodshed. Meghan Markle has suffered a devastating setback as Netflix refuses to stock her as ever products in its flagship retail location. They will not feature her lifestyle brand at Netflix House in Dallas, Texas, which launches December 11 with immersive experiences and merchandise from hit series like Stranger Things and Squid Game. On top of that, Netflix is about to quote ax Meghan Markle's Netflix show by Christmas they are going to leave no room for, for doubt that they are parting ways with Megan first Look, deal or no. Rob, your thoughts?

Rob Shooter (21:53)

Yeah, yeah, this is great reporting. I can advance this even a little bit too. I have on my sub stacked. They tried. So first of all, a pop up store. What is this Netflix store? It's a, it's a way to generate buzz and marketing and some money. HBO did it when they were the king of the world, when they had sex in the city and Six Feet under and all those shows. HBO had a store on 42nd street here, here in New York City and you could go in and you could get yourself a Sex and City bag or T shirt or a carry purse and it was really cute thing to have. They were great Christmas gifts. So movie companies have done this, studios have done this for a while. So it's going to be a big experience. You would think that they would want Meghan Markle to turn up and cut the ribbon, to be the first person in the store. And the way they get is to give her products. She's not even worth that. So she can't get her product in this pop up Netflix store, which once again is not really a store. It's a marketing opportunity. So if you throw up a shelf of her jams, it doesn't matter if you don't sell any. It's just a marketing opportunity. It's not like a real store. However, my sources are telling me Meghan did try to get her products in real stores. She went to the big retailers. I'm assuming it's the Targets and the Kohl's. Nobody wanted her. She couldn't really get her products. Forget Netflix, which doesn't really have a store. Sort of a 10 store. The real stores. If you were running a real business at hot Christmas, where do you want your products? You want them in Bloomingdale's and Macy's and Nordstrom's and Target. She's no stores now. That isn't for lack of trying. There's just no demand. We have seen her career, her popularity plummet. But I've never seen it at a point where just nobody cares. And now we're at that point where I think people are just rolling their eyes. They. They don't care. They don't care.

You know, I've said this before, you know, over the past few months, I think with Megan we've seen there is just, there is not Even a hate watching aspect. There's not even like a cultural rubber necking experience that we all want to share. We're just exhausted by her.

Rob Shooter (23:59)

She's done. You're so smart, Maureen. She's exhausted me. I love to hate a celebrity or tv. And in the world that I live in, the gossip world, if I'm gonna spend hours and hours finding a story, I want you to read it. I'm not gonna do all this work for nothing. So I can see every day just on my sub stack who rates, who doesn't rate? Megan? Every story used to rate because the people that hated her, Reddit, the people that loved her, Reddit. So I got 100%. Now the people that love her, it's not 50 anymore, it's 10. Now the people that hate her, they don't really hate her anymore. They're bored. It's 10. So it's that 80 in the middle that I don't get. I only now get a 20% people interested in, in Megan. Combining love and hate, it's that big in politics you'd call them. I guess independence is that middle ground that she has completely lost. She still has her hardcore fans, she still has a hardcore haters, but that 80% in the middle don't care. Again, it's, it's, it's shocking that this has happened because even the villains out there, the Omarosas, the Bethenny Frankels are so good at playing the villain. They've kept their hate watching audience, they've kept themselves relevant. Megan is no longer relevant. It's, it's over.

Maureen Callahan (25:17)

Rob, what did you hear about? Because the rumor is that whoever hired her to play herself in that cameo for that Amazon film, that they were very upset that she leaked her cameo in that film because they wanted it to be a surprise. Absolutely that's true.

Rob Shooter (25:32)

Absolutely true. The only reason they put a cameo, a celebrity in any project is to get buzzed just before the project hits. A year before a project hits does no good. I'm a real good master of the PR game. I don't do it anymore. I'm now in the gossip game. But they're connected. The reason I'm a good gossip columnist is as a great publicist. And so they put cameos. So it's a little surprise when the audience goes in. They're often not credited.

Maureen Callahan (25:58)

Even like Mike Tyson showing up in the hangover.

Rob Shooter (26:00)

Genius.

Maureen Callahan (26:01)

And the whole audience went, whoa.

Rob Shooter (26:04)

Yeah, absolutely right. Those moments when you're sitting there, you're like, was that. Did I just see then you leave the cinema and you tell all your friends and then they buy tickets. So the fact that Meghan leaked it, like, undercut the whole reason she was hired. She would argue, oh, I gave you so much press. They would argue, the project ain't even finished yet. This press will be forgotten about in two weeks. So you just wasted the trump card. The trump card of playing Megan is so clever. She wasted it for them. And so now other studios, other people that were thinking about cameos, they ain't gonna do it.

Maureen Callahan (26:41)

To your point about not letting actors run the asylum, whether it's Timothy Chalamet Shyamalan, Ding Dong, or, you know, this Ding Dong over here known as the Duchess. Okay, I gotta ask you about the latest update, which. This is a story that has had legs for over a year. Last summer, the socialite writer Derek Blasberg was an overnight guest at Gwyneth Paltrow's $5.4 million Amagansett house out in the Hamptons. The story goes that in the middle of the night he literally shat the bed and that it was like a blast radi the likes of which no cleaning person out here has ever had to clean up, like ceilings, like blood splatter, crime scene levels. And he apparently fled in the middle of the night like down the lie for his life. And the friendship has never recovered. The update a year later, Gwyneth, who went and told, by the way, Oprah, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, everyone she could find out in the Hamptons, she told. She's. She's still traumatized by it. And she's. She's also refuted, swatted away the rumors that Derek was on Ozempic and that caused the explosion. She says, which means, I think she just thinks that he's like a pig, I think.

Rob Shooter (28:01)

Right. I think a couple of things here. One, I think the crime that Derek committed in a spare bedroom is far worse than any friendship crime that Blake Lively might have done against Taylor Swift.

Maureen Callahan (28:14)

Interesting.

Rob Shooter (28:15)

Why would somebody do that in my spare bedroom, which I don't have at the Hamptons? I would be so furious. And then to flee the scene of the crime, to not get up in the morning and beg for a bowl of water so you can get on your hands and knees and clean the room. To actually leave the scene of the crime, I find shocking. Derek's a very tricky character. I've been on several TV shows with him, and he wasn't that nice to me. He's one of those vanity firm, very smart, very.

Maureen Callahan (28:43)

He's a professional Star fucker.

Rob Shooter (28:45)

That's what he is.

Maureen Callahan (28:46)

Yeah. When she first met him, she said, what is your deal? Like, are you just a professional friend of celebrities? And it's like, yeah, he paints himself.

Rob Shooter (28:55)

He'd like to be Truman Capone. Like, he'd like to be. Except he did write Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood. Like, as well as being a star effort, Truman really was an extraordinary talent.

Maureen Callahan (29:07)

A sparkling conversationalist everybody wanted to be around.

Rob Shooter (29:10)

He's not the nicest guy. He likes these celebrities. He's managed to make a career out of being friends with Posh Spice and Greta Paltrow. However, this is a. This is a story. This is an incident that is very smelly, shall I say, and very difficult to get away from. I could think of so many different puns I want to use right now. Gwyneth, too, is almost like the reigning queen of that. Of that. That group of Hamptonites. And if Gwyneth doesn't approve of you, you ain't gonna be invited to Martha Stewart's or to Oprah's or the Seinfeld's or Billy Joel's house. And so I think Eric, we could say, has burned his bridges. I'm sure there's another metaphor we could see.

Maureen Callahan (29:53)

He literally shat the bed.

Rob Shooter (29:55)

He shat his career. He literally, his whole career went down the toilet that day. And the fact that there was the rumor that he was on Ozemp, the fact that's been swatted away clearly tells you. Clearly tells you that this isn't something that she doesn't want to talk about. I think there's gonna be more that comes out on this now. And I can't wait for another celebrity to invite Derek over for the night, and let's see what happens.

Maureen Callahan (30:19)

I wish I could hire a dedicated private investigator on the nerve to really get into, like, I want a TikTok of how this happened. And, you know, so Gwyneth says, allegedly the reason she can't get past this. He never apologized.

Rob Shooter (30:32)

He never apologized.

Maureen Callahan (30:33)

He didn't even send a text. Like, oh, my God, I'm mortified. Like, can I at least pay for the crime scene? She had to send in a team that cleans up death scenes. You know it, right? That's not just, like, throw some Clorox in a. In a bucket of water and have at it.

Rob Shooter (30:47)

This is like, a couple of weeks ago. I was so ashamed to admit it. I was in a taxi, and I farted. And I said, sorry. I was so sorry. I was so embarrassed. I Can't even imagine doing what Derek allegedly did and not saying sorry, leaving the scene of the crime and pretending as if nothing happened. Gwyneth, she's a neat person. She knows her. She knows her cleaning very well. She must have walked into that bedroom and just said, holy.

Maureen Callahan (31:17)

Imagine it, Rob, because you're gonna smell it before you open the door, right? You're going to smell. So you're really going to have this conversation with yourself. Like, am I smelling what I think I'm smelling? There's no way.

Rob Shooter (31:28)

No, no, no way.

You know, the guest rooms in her house all have en suite bathrooms. She's going to be thinking, no way.

You don't have to run down the hallway. If I had the houses hyperstated, there are not ensuite bathrooms. You'd have to run down the hallway in the middle of the night. This. This is just the most delicious story. It isn't going anywhere. And the fact that Derek takes himself so seriously makes it even more fun. Because there is a way that if you had a good sense of humor, if you were cheeky, if I had done this in Gwenha's bedroom, I would have T shirts, I would have mugs, I would be selling hats. I would volunteer to come to your house and smell up your bathroom. Like, I would be making a living like Sydney Sweeney.

Maureen Callahan (32:10)

You'd figure out a way to bottle that scent and market it. Yes. Now, I have one final question for you.

So I damaged my arm when I was little and that ended my. I know I have one arm smaller than the other when I was a young child. I know it's quite a traumatic thing, but I'm kind of like a bit of a dick with. With one arm. If I had two, I would be a monster. So it probably was the best thing. But that happened to me. I don't play the piano, but I'm a really mean trumpet player.

And then we're going to talk about Amy Schumer dropping half, if not more of her body weight and deleting all of her fat photos from Instagram. And I use that word because she uses that word and getting ready to divorce her husband. We've got thoughts and theories. Okay, now before we do that, I have got to address this email because it has been driving us crazy. And we've got images that we're gonna roll as I read this email because I've had the exact same thought. Troublemaker. This is troublemaker Ali. Dear Maureen, Day one listener. Love it. Regrettably, the dynamic between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Gr has become increasingly odd since they have been making the rounds. I couldn't agree more. And you know what? It's creeping me out. It's creeping me out. Okay. Ali says, first, these women are in what seems like an alarming race to shrink themselves. I say this is someone with a history of this horrendous eating disorder. The signs are unmistakable. Yeah, Ariana Grande in particular is alarmingly, alarmingly thin. Secondly, the relationship between Cynthia and Ariana is bizarre. That's to put it mildly, Allie. I can't tell if it's pure theater kid energy or something more troubling, but the body language is off. I don't find their antics cute. And included some examples. Now, I don't know if these are the same examples. I didn't click on your clips that you included from X, but we had pulled together some here at the Nerve just because we knew we were going to talk about it. And like, Cynthia Erivo is like, pawing Ariana Grande, like, at any given moment with those creepy coffin nails. Like, there's this, there's this one instance in particular where they're both on the red carpet and Ariana is giving an interview and it's like shades of Dakota Fanning with that young actress where even, like Jon Hamm, who, as you all know, we have a lot of issues with here at the Nerve says to Dakota, hey, knock it off. And moves her hand away from that young actress's neck and earlobes. You know, Dakota was, like, all over her. Just, like, creepy, creepy, creepy. Same with Cynthia. She's, like, affixing Ariana's choker, which. There's nothing wrong with it. She doesn't need to be touching her. They're constantly, like, holding hands. It's like they're together. You know, it's very strange. And Ariana's rumored fiance has been nowhere to be seen. And there is a. There's this distinct age gap between the two of these women. And I think that it is beyond creepy. I don't know if it's just meant to create buzz. You know, all cl. Any click is a good click, but it. It's beyond disturbing. And what's even. You know, of course, these. These people who work for, like, mainstream entertainment outlet shows such as your Entertainment Tonights, like, they can't say what any normal person, any one of us here at the Nerve would say, which is, what the are you doing? Why are you pawing each other like this? Should I leave? Do you two want to be alone? Okay. Anyway, you know, and we're. We're. We're showing a movie that's, like, really, it's. It's directed at, like, young girls. What's going on? Okay, now to this. This hot. I can't say it because it's view adjacent, but I saw this. So the other day, Tim was over doing my makeup, and I had, you know, I have morning TV on in the background. Because if you want to be the destroyer of morning television, you got to know your enemy. And so it was Kelly and Mark, okay? Kelly Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos, talking about the new rules at the workplace regarding this younger generation. And I'll tell you Tim's reaction and my reaction as this was playing in the background. And then Marlena and I are going to talk about it because she's got some examples of her own. Here we go.

And people tend to ignore that. Oh, there's their producer who's, like, nodding his head. The producer of that show. Okay, we can stop there. We can stop there. So. So. So we hear this. We hear this like we hear Kelly Ripa say, you can't say in an email anymore. Need this asap. And Tim's like, like, are you effing kidding me? You can't say I need this ASAP in the workplace anymore. And I said, my thoughts exactly, Tim. I'm so glad you said it before I did, because sometimes I wonder, like, am I too harsh? Like, am I too. Like, am I not getting something? Am I like. But no, like, you have to be able to say to an employee, you know, this is a workplace and you might need something as soon as possible. And if ASAP is triggering you, I don't think you should be in the workplace now. Half of Gen Zers this podcast. This is from Jennifer Welch and Angie Sullivan of the I've had it podcast. I'm not familiar with this podcast. I've never seen it before, but they were talking about what's going on with Gen Z in the workplace. You guys are not going. Maybe you will. Maybe. Maybe you're a Gen Xer or a millennial and you're dealing with Gen Zers and you're. Maybe you're even a boomer dealing with Gen Zers and you're like, this cannot be real. But it's real. Here we go. Nearly half of Gen Zers have mom regularly talk to their Boss. Shut up. No. 79 say their parents communicate with their manager. This cannot be real. 73% get help from their parents completing work assignments. 57% bring their parents to work. If this is what is happening in real time, we have bigger problems than I even thought. If my child called me and said, I want you to come to work and look over my performance review, I would say, I will come to your office and pick you up, and we're going to go take you somewhere to get some help.

We're going to have a therapist standby. I have failed as a parent. We both need to go somewhere and get some help. Yes, you have failed as a parent. If your child cannot enter the workforce with some independence and autonomy. So Marlena is joining us now to talk about this because we were having a big conversation about it over the weekend. And, Marlena, you were sharing some of your own horror stories from other companies that you've worked for. So I don't know if we can say where you were. Can we.

Marlena (43:51)

Yeah, we could just. We could say I worked at cnn.

Maureen Callahan (43:53)

Yeah, it was cnn. Okay. And when was this?

Marlena (43:56)

This was probably around, I'll say, 2010. So a while ago. Like 15 years ago.

Maureen Callahan (44:02)

Okay.

Marlena (44:03)

Okay.

Maureen Callahan (44:04)

So which story do you want to tell first? Because there's the one in which you were accused of preventing an employee from reaching her goal of motherhood. This, hands down, to me is like, I can't believe it. That was funny.

Marlena (44:18)

That was next level to me. I'll start with that story. So this was the Casey Anthony trial, which everybody pretty much would know, I think. And it was all hands on deck, and there were a lot of boots on the ground. There was a ton of us in Orlando at this trial. This individual was not in Orlando. She was back in New York with a couple other employees. But most people were down there.

Maureen Callahan (44:40)

So what was her job description? Marlena?

Marlena (44:43)

Producer.

Maureen Callahan (44:43)

She's a producer. Okay. So you're a producer on the biggest trial in the country. Like the eyes of the world are on this trial. This woman was. Everybody believes she killed her toddler daughter and covered it up. She got off. She had a great lawyer. She got off. But everyone was covering this story. So you're a producer and you're back at home base in New York City, the CNN offices. Go ahead.

Marlena (45:10)

That's right now. So there's a bunch of us at the court, at the courthouse. Right. So I don't really know what's going on back in New York, but rumblings from another employee came back when I would say, where is so and so. And I don't know. I haven't seen her for two hours. I don't know. I haven't seen her for three hours. I don't know. She came in and left, and I haven't seen her since. So I got this so many times that I finally said, hey, you know, what do you. What are you doing? You know, we. And she's like, well, it's not really my story. It's not really your story. This is everyone's story. So, Maureen, you may be familiar with this. You have kind of a beat, right? So if you have a story that has legs, every time something breaks within that story, that becomes your story. Right. Well, but now it was the whole show's story because this is all we were doing until the verdict came out. So what happened three years prior and leading up to this point doesn't really matter because now it's, like I said, all hands on deck. We need panelists on the show. It's not all principals, which is, you know, people from the actual case itself. And, you know, you could also, by the way, be working ahead or doing anything or asking what you could be doing, you know.

Maureen Callahan (46:18)

Yes, yes, and yes.

Marlena (46:20)

So she took it upon herself to, you know, make this her free time. And look, I think anybody would take a little bit of extra time. Fine. But she was disappearing for hours and hours. Fine. So I had this conversation with her saying, you know, you really can't be doing this. When I get back to New York, she comes in my office and says, you stressed me out so badly that I was unable she was gonna have her eggs frozen because she was of a certain age. And she said that it was her last opportunity to do so. And her doctor said she couldn't be stressed during this process. And because I stressed her out, I. She held me, quote, single handedly responsible for never being able to have children.

Maureen Callahan (47:06)

I don't know if you should be offended or flattered by that. You know, like to have that amount of power.

Marlena (47:12)

That power.

Maureen Callahan (47:13)

Marlena, I kind of feel a little.

Marlena (47:15)

Bit like a hero because I don't think that girl should have been procreating given her mental.

Maureen Callahan (47:22)

Yes. And by the way, like, as we were discussing, like, this girl, this girl, this woman was in the wrong business. If you don't like stress, don't get in the breaking news business. It's full of stress. Some people thrive on it. Some people can't wait to see what's going to happen next. Other people need a slower pace. You know, I don't think a Major News Network 24. 7 News Network was for her. She could, she could probably thrive over on Kelly and Mark.

Marlena (47:50)

You know, she was the type that wanted the title of producer, but doing the actual work it took to be a producer wasn't really something that she was up for doing in terms of like breaking news. Like anything that was sort of high profile, she kind of wanted on the case, but then she would just want to like, travel to meet up with like a lawyer working on the case and then. And then constantly talk about how she was working on that particular thing and whatever it was, she was a mess.

Maureen Callahan (48:20)

Okay, okay, so the other one. And again, like, I think we understand why CNN has been in the toilet for as long as it's been in the toilet, because this story blew my mind. Okay. You again, had a remote employee, a major story, and you and I were talking about how when we travel, like, we, we both always bring our laptops with us because you never know what may break when you're on the road. And it's a pain in the neck because they're like, not light, you know, and like, it's always with you and it's always got to be charged. But nonetheless, this is what this is. This is what we do for a living. And that's part of the deal.

Marlena (48:57)

I would rather have the burden of carrying my laptop than the burden of stressing out about getting to my laptop wherever I am if I need to. So this particular case, it was actually a weekend. And you know, Maureen, in breaking news business, the weekend doesn't mean anything. Even in the podcast business, it doesn't mean anything because, you know, we are. Stories are always changing and we have to, we have to adjust and keep up.

Maureen Callahan (49:20)

But anyway, but by the way, just to say, when William strips Harry and Meghan of their titles, which he will, the nerve is gonna have to go live. No matter where any of us are in the world, we're going to have to drop what we're doing and go live.

Marlena (49:35)

We'll do it live.

Maureen Callahan (49:36)

Do it live. Just like Bill O'Reilly. Do it live. Okay. Anyway, sorry not to interrupt you.

Marlena (49:41)

No, it's fine. I don't really remember what the story was. Doesn't really matter. It was a weekend and again, we were all working and I was trying to get in touch with. She was a PA at the time. And there was zero answers. Yes, a production assistant. Zero answers at the time, all weekend. So come Monday, I asked her what happened and she said, I'm really sorry. I was at my grandparents house all weekend and this was the time right before iPhones.

Maureen Callahan (50:12)

Right?

Marlena (50:12)

Like we had BlackBerry still, you know, for the office. And she's like, and my BlackBerry died and I didn't have my charger. And you know, my grandparents, they don't have that kind of technology. So my response was, do your grandparents live near a Verizon store or maybe like a Best Buy or even anything? And she.

Maureen Callahan (50:33)

Is there a strip mall in your suburban area?

Marlena (50:36)

I mean, where do, where are your grandparents? In Siberia? No, I'm sure they were in some New Jersey town or New York.

Maureen Callahan (50:45)

So wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. We're talking New Jersey or New York.

Marlena (50:50)

Oh, yeah. I mean.

Maureen Callahan (50:51)

Oh, stop, stop it, stop it, stop. I would fire her.

Marlena (50:54)

I think. You know what I remember now that I'm actually remembering. She used to commute into the city from New Jersey.

Maureen Callahan (51:00)

Get out, get out area.

Marlena (51:02)

We all were our.

Maureen Callahan (51:04)

Anyway, you all know where your technology store is, Your big box electronics store. You go over to what, PC Richards and you say, hey, I need a burner phone. I need a BlackBerry. Give it to me. Or how about this?

Marlena (51:16)

Bring your charger. How about that? And I said that. I was like, well, wherever you go, you should bring your charger. And if you don't have one, you should definitely purchase one. Because, you know, we would expense it. You could just bring in the receipt, and we would pay for it.

Maureen Callahan (51:28)

So, anyway, you're too kind. You're too kind. Go.

Megyn Kelly (51:35)

Okay.

Maureen Callahan (51:35)

Go.

Marlena (51:36)

But she was so offended that I said, well, you really need to bring your charger, and you could have gone to a Verizon store that. She took it to the next level and tried to, like, make a report on me. My. My executive producer, you know, intercepted this because she's like, no, no. Like, this is not. I'm. I'm not getting a file on me because I asked you if you live. Your grandparents live near a Verizon store.

Maureen Callahan (52:03)

You know, she tried to get HR to open a file on you because.

Marlena (52:08)

She didn't charge her phone, and it was my fault for telling her to charge her phone.

Maureen Callahan (52:13)

So this was the beginning. This is the. This was the beginning. Like, Marlena, is it the helicopter parenting of, like. Is Gen X like, a complete. Are they responsible for this? Like, who's responsible for this kind of. I call it learned helplessness. You know, it's like, you should. If you cannot, you.

Rob Shooter (52:36)

You.

Maureen Callahan (52:37)

And secondly, you have what is what many people would consider, like, a glamour job. Like, you're working in media. Those are highly coveted positions. And you're really going to roll around that headquarters, that newsroom, and be like, my producer yelled at me because, like, my phone was dead during a breaking news. Like, what?

Marlena (52:54)

I didn't even yell.

Maureen Callahan (52:56)

You don't yell. You're not a yellow. I'm not a yeller either. But you're. You're really nice. Like, you. You will give people, like, the benefit of. The benefit of the doubt. You know, you're the only person that's.

Marlena (53:06)

Ever said that to me, actually.

Maureen Callahan (53:08)

Really?

Marlena (53:08)

That was a first. Yeah. Yeah. Look, I'm not gonna say that. I don't. I guess. I mean, I've been told more than once I've been called bulldog. I've been called other things, and I don't really understand it, because then people get to know me, and they're like, oh, you're actually nice. I was scared of you when I first met you. And I'm like, okay. And I don't yell. But it's so weird. I just think if you are decisive and direct and you're a woman, you're a bulldog. Or you're an asshole. But, like, if I were a man, I'd probably be called, like, a leader, you know, a great manager or something like that. So it's one of those things. I mean, it's A little tangential what.

Maureen Callahan (53:47)

I just said, but I just. I don't. I don't understand, like, where this. Like, this. This kind of stuff did not exist when you and I were coming up. Like, the idea that, like, a parent would call a supervisor to talk about a performance review. Or the idea that, like, you would be. Feel entitled enough to say, like, I was called on the carpet for not doing my job properly, and I'm gonna turn around and blame you and cuddle me some more. Like, where does this come from?

Marlena (54:13)

You know, it's really weird. Like, as you're saying it, I'm just thinking, like, it. Does everybody have some sort of nepo complex? Like, they are entitled as somebody whose parent has some sort of pull, so they just think their own parent has pull? I have no idea. I would never even imagine bringing my parent to the workforce. I read more into that report where people. It said, like, 73% of Gen Zers are bringing their parents to job interviews and letting the parent talk.

Maureen Callahan (54:43)

Bosses who are allowing it. I would laugh somebody out of the room. I would say, you're automatically out of the running. Are you kidding me?

Marlena (54:49)

And what kind of jobs are they going for? Could you imagine walking into a network or any. Any media company and just being like, hi, my name is Marlena, and this is my mom, Linda. Like, like, who does that? And who says, okay, both of you have a seat.

Maureen Callahan (55:05)

The AI revolution may be coming sooner than we think. If this is really what the younger generation has to offer. I mean, it's wild. It's wild.

Marlena (55:18)

I do have one other thing, though.

Maureen Callahan (55:20)

Yeah?

Marlena (55:21)

This generation, we've talked about this. Everything's remote, and they don't really have that kind of. When you say, like, workplace culture, like, what does the workplace look like anymore to these people? So they don't really interact the way you and I have interacted with people, where you're sitting next to people and you're physically somewhere with other people. You and I actually do it the most because we're in New York together.

Maureen Callahan (55:44)

Right?

Marlena (55:46)

But I wonder, because their parents know how to talk to people face to face, is that why they're bringing them in? And they're just like, can you help me talk to somebody face to face?

Maureen Callahan (55:55)

Maybe. You know, I think that there may be the combination of that and Covid and what that did in terms of socially setting kids back. I kind of feel like if I could, like, write high school curriculums, like, I think there needs to be, like, an actual class that's about socialization and workplace culture. I really do. I really do. Because like, if you, if you, if you can't relate on a human level and behave as an adult, you're toast. It's just, it's not gonna, life's not gonna go well for you. It owes you no favors.

Marlena (56:27)

Or it's just gonna be chaotic because you're gonna be with people your own age who came up the same way and none of you are gonna know how to troubleshoot or work together or.

Maureen Callahan (56:38)

Be resourceful, have, you know, resilience, you know, the qualities that really will serve you well in life. We are back. So Amy Schumer has been all over social media, okay, all over it. She has lost like more than half of her body weight. And all she is doing is she's telling us how, you know, this whole body positivity movement, like it's all been completely like revealed as the big freaking lie. It was because every celebrity who struggled with their weight who has now lost weight on some kind of GLP1 is like loving life like never before and they can't get enough of themselves. Like, they've all turned into mega narcissists. I totally believe Michelle Obama is on a GLP1. Okay. Amy Schumer has lost so much weight that so, so number one, she has scrubbed all old photos of herself from Instagram. If you go on her Instagram account, the most recent checking that I did, she's got four pictures. Four. Okay, so what does that tell us? She hated herself when she was overweight. She hated herself. She hated the way she looked. She said it was society giving her for not conforming. And how not feminist was that and how not girl power was that. Turns out Amy was full of shit all along. She just wanted to be skinny and pretty. Secondly, she's doing all of these photo shoots in her, I don't know where, but she's on some staircase. You know the broken doll pose where you're like, I'm just skin and bones and like all, everything's like a kimbo. I'm like, I, you know, and like she's doing these in like fur lined jackets or coats on like this expensive looking staircase. And in one of them, like her little boy who looks to be about 4, he's upside down like his head is, like, heading towards the floor on a staircase. And she's like, ignoring the kid. She's like, but look at me. I. Like, I weigh 90 pounds now. Look at me. You know, it's really sick. It's really sick. And it's so effing hypocritical. Thirdly, the story is that Amy is looking to lose some more weight. That's known as her husband. His name is Chris. I believe it's Chris Fisher. Now, she has said, first of all, I know people who knew this guy when he was, like, a chef up on Martha's Vineyard. And the line on this guy is that he was always star effing. And he was always. He was a climber and a glommer, okay? And Amy was the best he could get. I'm just gonna say it. Amy was the best he could get. Now, she has long maintained that Chris is kind of a difficult person because he has autism. Apparently, he was diagnosed with it. My theory is that Chris is just an asshole. He's an asshole who talks down to her and says terrible things to her. And she made her peace with it because she didn't think she could do any better with Chris when she had all that weight on her. And now that she's lost the weight, I think Amy is feeling like her prospects on the singles market have gone way up, that her stock is on the rise, and she should get on Raya and see if she can level up, because Chris is yesterday's news. And his autism may, in fact, just my opinion, be gardening variety assholism. We're going to look at a clip from Amy's SNL monologue. Joking, joking about her husband's autism. Here we go. It's been really positive for our family to have him diagnosed. You know, we. I understand so much more about his behavior, and it's given him so many tools. Like, you know, now if somebody's in the middle of a long, boring story, he will straight up just walk away, you know? And when people find out that he has autism, like, they don't know much about it. They're like, oh, does he love to count? Okay, okay. She went on that whole tangent, but really, that's the story. So, Marlena, tell us your thoughts about this. You're in the comedy world in New York City and have been for a very long time. What are your thoughts?

I was. Well, she's obviously explaining away his bad behavior, and I find it interesting that she says he's autistic because according to her, she just kind of took an online survey of him. Yeah, that's how it started. Now, did she follow through with, like. Like, met, like, an actual doctor? Unclear.

He found a therapist. It's in, like, one of the documentaries. She made a bunch of projects around him, you know, and. And, yeah, they talk to a therapist, but you can find a therapist who will agree with your assessment. You know, if you.

If. If you're. Yes, yes. If you can pay the therapist, the therapist will listen to you and massage whatever theory of yours that you have, Especially if you're walking in with Amy Schumer, I'm sure.

But. But she did it. She was like, that's weird. That's weird. And then she would, like, she did a whole standup routine. How she went through all of these questions, and he was, like, checking all the boxes. But I would argue that a lot of people check those boxes. I think the spectrum is so big that anybody can fit into some category of it now. It's. To call him autistic is insane.

I think it's very dangerous. We're in. We're in a place in the culture where you can pathologize about any. Into having some sort of medical, neurological condition, and everybody should work around him. You know, I think it's the height of rudeness to walk out of a room when someone's telling a story that doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat. I think you're an. I think you're an. She tells a story. I. I don't know if it's in that monologue or another one where she says to him, like, hey, do you like the way. Do you like this outfit? Do you like what I look? And he's like, you got better stuff. I'll come in like, does this look like shit? And he's like, yeah, you have a.

Lot of other clothes.

Why don't you wear those? I'm like, that's a good point. And she's like, autistic. Is it. Is it autistic or is it just being a dick?

Right? And she also did a standup routine where she was in the hospital for hypertension or something. She was pregnant. And they said, like, how long is she gonna be here? It was the husband and her sister. And I think the doctor said something like five hours. And his response was, oh, good, because I saw a cool pottery place around the. The corner. And so then he left while.

Maureen Callahan (67:09)

Is that autistic? How is that autistic? You really have to bend yourself into some real mental gymnastics to be like, my husband loves me so much. It's too bad that his autism directed him to go spend more of my money, because this guy doesn't have a job, as far as we know.

Marlena (67:27)

Yeah. Did he stop cooking once they started dating? It's entirely.

Maureen Callahan (67:30)

I think so. I think so. And then he's probably. If they are getting a divorce, he's probably gonna go after a lot of her money because she wrote projects about him. She did that show Life and Beth with Michael Cera that she starred in it. It was like a fictionalized version of their romance. It lasted only two seasons. It was highly mediocre. But she's used him as material, so he's probably. You know, it's the autism that's focused on the money. Amy, don't worry. Blame the autism.

Exactly. But I find it interesting that Amy Schumer. Look, whether you find her attractive or not, I personally don't, but she's still pretty famous. She's connected to a lot of famous people. I can't imagine there wasn't one other person other than this guy that would have gone out with her.

Well, he was kind of like a big fish in a small pond. Right? So he's a chef. He's a.

A quote, unquote, celebrity chef who cooks for celebrities up there and is, like, friendly with, like, some. I think he was friendly with Jake Gyllenhaal. They're. They're Martha. Martha's Vineyard people. So if he kind of. You know, it's like that episode of Seinfeld where George finds. He buys a wallet, and in the wallet is. Is the photo of a model, like, in the. In the laminate. And he's out somewhere, and someone says, oh, is that your girlfriend or your wife? And he says, yes. Yes, it is. She died. And he's suddenly given entree to, like, New York's hottest nightclubs and New York's hottest women. Because the beautiful dead wife is the passport. Right? The legit, like. So I think that Chris's life in the vineyard was kind of his passport for. For legitimacy to someone like Amy, who, again, famous, wealthy, she may be. She's not really turning any A listers heads. She's not.

Marlena (69:29)

No. I mean, you're not wrong, but she has worked on these movies and with Judd Apatow. I mean, I'm sure she's like, think.

Maureen Callahan (69:36)

About the movies, okay? Think about what the. The number that these movies did on her head, okay? And I always thought she was like, it was sick, and it made me sad for her. Because I think she's smarter than this. Trainwreck, which we were told was autobiographical, about a single, slutty, constantly drunk woman who doesn't think she's worthy of love. Okay. Then there was I Feel Pretty, a movie in which her character takes a blow to the head and believes she's a supermodel. And the gag is, she's ugly. Okay. These are very dark things. And then she went along with being cast in the original version, before Greta Gerwig got her hands on it, of the Barbie movie. Remember that? Going to Margot Robbie. Like, old school movie star, beautiful. And Amy was asking for it. It reminds me of Lena Dunham. Like, beat me up. I'm gonna look as unattractive in the public square as possible. I'm going into show business. Beat me up. And then I'm gonna yell at you for finding me unattractive.

Marlena (70:39)

Right. But I'm gonna joke about it so it looks like I'm cool with it.

Maureen Callahan (70:43)

There have been rumors for years that Amy Schumer is an unre thief of other comics materials. And when she did one of her most recent Netflix specials, we were going to show a clip of it, but I just opted not to because it's too unfunny. Like, she begins one of her Netflix specials. She gets millions and millions and millions of dollars for this stuff. Talking about, it's not even a routine. It's not even a bit. She's just talking about her and her loser husband getting food poisoning in Paris and all the ways it came out of them all night long. And it's beyond vulgar and gross and nothing anybody wants to hear. And it kind of made me think, there's a lot of credence to those rumors because why couldn't she write better material?

Marlena (71:27)

Right? Right. She's had a lot of misses in her. In her material. And I actually have a friend who really is in the comedy scene. Right. Like, so I did it for a while, like, nine years. I did stand up on the side, but I met actual comics that do it for a living. And this one guy who actually emcees at the Comedy Cellar, which is one of the biggest comedy clubs in New York, told me, like, flat out that she steals people's jokes all the time. But the crazy thing he said to me also, and I looked at him like he had 14 heads, was the only reason she gets away with it is because she's a blonde pretty girl.

Maureen Callahan (72:06)

Like, I think you're the only person who has described her that way. A blonde, pretty girl. And that's why she gets away with it. I say it's because she. I mean, look, she's. She's connected to big people. Chuck Schumer's her uncle, right?

Maureen Callahan (72:24)

Her uncle is Chuck Schumer. She is very heavy hitters. In her corner, Chris Rock directed one of her first Netflix Netflix specials. She's tight with Jerry Seinfeld. They go vacationing all the time. It was all over Instagram until she deleted her photos with Jerry because she was overweight. Are you kidding me?

Marlena (72:42)

I don't really understand the deleting of all of the photos. I know what you're saying is because she doesn't like the way she looked. But, like, what does that prove? You've been on tv, you've done countless interviews. If anybody wants to do a side by side of you, you, they have plenty of footage. I don't understand why. Why wiping your Instagram would somehow wash away old images of you. Because it's not going to.

Maureen Callahan (73:07)

You're talking like a logical person, and a lot of these, like, celebrities are not logical people. You know, it brings me back to our recent conversation with Jillian Michaels about GLP1s and like, the havoc they actually wreak on, like, the body and the brain. And like, I truly wonder if, like, it. She's kind of out of her mind at the moment. First of all, she's probably in a total pink cloud, right? She's reached the pinnacle of human experience, which is being skinny. Okay, in her mind, number one, so. And. But number two, what I find just psychologically fascinating about it and why I find her a very dark person is it. It just shows how much she clearly hated herself. If she could wave a magic wand, she would make everything you're talking about, all the video, all the movies, all the TV shows, all of her triumphs her inside. Amy Schumer was a huge hit for Comedy Central for her. It made her a national star. She would eradicate all of those things if she could just Memory hole for everyone on planet Earth. Like in her own Black Mirror episode that she was ever overweight.

Marlena (74:22)

Well, no one's ever going to forget that because. And the chances of her becoming larger again are probably pretty high. You know, if she's. Unless she decides to stay on A G G LP1 for the last life.

Maureen Callahan (74:35)

You have to be on forever. She'd have to be on it forever. And with a lot of these people, it's going to get very dark because, listen, she's still young, and I'm not saying this in any sort of I just mean it in a like, like, let's approach it like we're a statistician, okay? The chances that you're going to develop some kind of catastrophic illness as you age, that you're going to develop some kind of a cancer, they're fairly good, okay? They're fairly good. Now if your doctor says to you, hey, we, in order to save your life, first of all, you need an operation. So as Jillian told us, this came as news to me and to a lot of troublemakers. You, your doctor takes you off Ozempic for like a month if you need surgery because the chances you will aspirate while under anesthesia are way too effing high. Okay? So you need surgery or you've got to go on chemo or radiation. And it cannot mix with a glp, one your body won't tolerate. They don't like. So now you're going to be faced with the real story. Like, what if you have to go back to being overweight? Amy Schumer always struck me as somebody whose body her. Nat, it's like Oprah, the natural set point of those people. Their bodies want to be a little bit heavier. They just do. Right.

Marlena (75:43)

It's almost like probably partially genetic. Right. I mean, some people are just building.

Maureen Callahan (75:49)

Yeah.

Marlena (75:49)

That way. And some people have really fast metabolisms. She's not one of them. I don't. Again, I still don't understand, you know, why she would wipe everything away. And it makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that these rumors are going around about her and her husband and she's sort of like wiping away the memory of him.

Maureen Callahan (76:15)

Is that just too far? No, I agree with you. I think that's absolutely part of it. I think it's this radical, very public act though of negation. It's destructive. It's. I'm destroying everything I was before. That's the father of her child and her kid.

Marlena (76:33)

It is in a lot of those photos and videos. So why is she taking those off as well? I mean, look, if I were famous like Amy Schumer, you wouldn't see my kid anywhere on social media.

Maureen Callahan (76:45)

Like, I hesitate smart person to do.

Marlena (76:49)

It as a non famous person. I hesitate to put stuff on there, you know, I mean, you know, it's very rare that I'll put stuff up.

Maureen Callahan (76:58)

But they don't have agency. Her son is four, you know.

Marlena (77:02)

Yeah.

Maureen Callahan (77:02)

Remember she gave him like whatever. We, we don't even have to go into the naming of the child. But I just think, you know, it's this kind of stuff. Like Amy Schumer doesn't understand why America has never fully embraced her. Like, why she's got. There's a cadre of people out there and I think, you know, we at the Nerve are among them who just have never fully warmed to her and bullshit. Like, this is why. It's absolutely why. The message she is sending, I believe, is that she was worthless when she wasn't the size of a toothpick.

Marlena (77:33)

Yeah, well, that's the message she's definitely sending now. And also, I just think that her self loathing or self defecating sort of humor is not attractive. I agree with you women. You know, it's like, is that it was either something gross that she would talk about, something sexual she would talk about or dating or whatever, and then it was all about herself. You know, she would always talk about, you know, like, you know, you don't want this. And. And the answer was obviously, you know, you know, that baby voice that she does. And it's all like, ooh. You know, And I just think that nobody wants to hear that, right? Like, nobody, especially women. No one wants to hear that. Like, I personally like observational humor and something that is a little bit more thought out and funny. Right. But like, I feel the same way about Nikki Glaser. I feel like all she talks about is blowjobs. And like, why is that funny me?

Maureen Callahan (78:40)

Because they're both, they're birds of a feather. She and Amy Schumer are both girls who have always felt supremely unattractive and place all of their self worth and validation. It's, it's really, you know what's really frustrating about it? To be a standup comic, I think you have to be very smart and you have to have a lot of guts and you have to be original and have an original take on things and, you know, exactly. You should be. You should be prioritizing and in service of your intellect, okay? But with these two, their major concern, their number one animating factor is am I effable? Does every guy in this room want to F me? And when I saw Nikki Glaser come out and do that horrible monologue on SNL where she was joking that to be sex trafficked was the highest form of sexual validation, save race. And she's wearing a cocktail napkin while do. Like you could practically see the results of her gynecological exam, you know.

Marlena (79:44)

Right. No.

Maureen Callahan (79:45)

So desperate. And it's so. It's like, oh, okay, honey, I get it. This is it for you, this is the only thing that gives your life meaning is knowing that, getting the sense that any guy in the room would want to, like, like, how sad is that?

Marlena (80:00)

How sad it is? And it's also one of those things. And I get with someone like Nikki Glaser when she did that Tom Brady roast, right. And like that kind of put her on the map, right. It's like she has like, if she couldn't get a guy, she had to validate herself by rolling with them. Right. Like, I can stand up here, I can take it. Yeah. With a lineup of these guys and I'm just gonna laugh and make these dirty jokes. So I'm kind of one of the guys, you know, And I feel like Amy Schumer like toes the line a little bit when it comes to that, where she, you know, she's. I mean, it's a male dominated industry that, you know.

Maureen Callahan (80:36)

Yeah, comedy, it's often a very misogynistic one as well. But the thing about Nikki Glaser, which is so smart is, you know, she gave this interview fairly recently. I think we played some of it on the Nerve where she was talking about how empowering she finds it that her boyfriend goes and has sex with other women and in fact she encourages it and she thinks this makes their relationship very healthy. And all I could think was like, this girl has this woman, rather, she's in her 40s now, has so much self loathing and so little self esteem, it's almost non existent. It's probably non existent. I find it so dark.

Marlena (81:15)

It. Yeah, she's, I mean, makes her sound like a doormat.

Maureen Callahan (81:18)

I mean, she is a doormat. She is a doormat.

Marlena (81:22)

And she probably thinks that it's. It sounds like she's evolved or like self empowered.

Maureen Callahan (81:30)

Cool girl. She's cool girl.

Marlena (81:32)

Again, I'm gonna roll with the guys. Like, it doesn't bother me. I'm so secure that he can do whatever the fuck he wants. And I'm just like, I'm totally cool with it. And it's like, no, you don't think you deserve any better. And so you're just gonna roll with it because you think if you ditch him, when is the next one knocking.

Maureen Callahan (81:50)

On your door exactly. You know, she should maybe go text Amy Schumer and have a meeting because Amy definitely thinks she's leveling up her husband better lawyer up because I don't think she's messing around. And I, I can't. You know, it's going to be really fun at the Nerve to watch this new iteration of Amy Schumer as she know, she's.

She. She cannot stay away from a camera lens now because she's feeling pretty.

I know. So, like, God, I can feel another movie coming on where she's taking off her clothes and thinking, all of us want to see it, but we don't.

Well, you know what? Lucky for us, the movies are dying. No one's going to give her a movie deal. It's not happening. You know, as discussed with Rob Shooter, you know, the best she could hope for is, like, maybe she'll get, like, another Netflix special. Maybe, maybe, maybe. But again, like, you know, I would be worried if I were her, too, because, like, and we can just leave it here. But, like, so much of what animated her was rage at not being considered societally attractive. And, you know, isn't it, like, it's like a trope, right? Like, well, that was her superpower. But now that she feels pretty, will she lose being funny? And is that a trade off she's willing to make? I would say yeah.

Marlena (83:06)

I'll say this in conclusion, Will, to your question of will she lose being funny, you have to decide if she was funny to begin with.

Maureen Callahan (83:15)

True enough, true enough. I would say yes. Whether it was her original material or not, I don't know. You know, the comedy writer Jesse Klein, I think was the real brains behind Inside Amy Schumer. He wrote a great essay book years ago. I forget the name of it, but Jesse Klein, very funny woman. Could be a star herself. I don't know why she's not.

Marlena (83:35)

But, you know who came to her defense was Sarah Silverman about synchronicity. I think that was the word they were using when it comes to, like, joke, like, parallel jokes where people are just in sync and it's not really joke stealing. It's just like you basically thought of it around the same time. It was this. I should have found that before we talked about this, because I remember thinking, now I get that. I get that. Because, look, hey, look, Bill Margaret's up there, and I feel like I could finish some of his sentences.

Maureen Callahan (84:07)

We are doing an intervention before the end of the year. I'm. I mean it. We have got to help you. I actually, I said to you, I want to find one of the docs from Intervention and get them in here. It's an addiction with you, sister. It's an addiction. We gotta break it.
