Maureen Callahan goes hard on Michelle Obama as she makes the media rounds promoting her new book on fashion, how she opines on her style choices as First Lady, claims there is a high level of scrutiny around how black women wear their hair and says the fashion industry is racist. She also slams Julia Fox's desperation for attention with her blood splattered Jackie Kennedy costume, exposes the latest disturbing details on Diddy, and goes after Meghan and Harry's overly staged home video that ended up on People magazine's Instagram reel. Michelle Obama has a new book out and my copy was pre ordered weeks ago. It is yet to arrive. It's called the look. And we're on a major, major media tour because who doesn't want to embody the sheer grace and effortlessness and joy, frankly, that one Michelle Obama just seems to radiate, you know, everywhere she goes, she's a beam of sunshine. Now first we're going to start with a little bit of the behind the scenes from People magazine. Michelle Obama reveals why she is more vibrant than ever than ever in her 60s. And we're going to go behind the scenes at her People magazine shoot. And you guys watch her posing. Just watch. Look at her. Like, she has like two moves and she feels very stiff. She's got, they've got like music on for her to be dancing to and getting loose to. And she, I'm just gonna say it. She can't dance. And you know, that is a trope about white people. And I'm only saying that because Michelle Obama has managed to racialize everything, including this book. And she's gonna blame white people for, for all of the constraints she had while looking so beautiful and glamorous and stylish. And she, and this book, by the way, is aimed at women. Men are. I know all you straight guys who watch the show and I got a special message for you a little bit later. The manly men. You're not buying this book. This book is for women, okay? And you know, there's a huge. I Went to. I had to cover it. And I went to Michelle Obama's opening night on her live book tour for the first book Becoming. And Oprah was her interviewer. And it was held in a sports stadium that housed at least 20 to 30,000 people. And when I tell you that crowd had a very, very healthy, if not majority, makeup of white women. Okay, but let's listen to Michelle tell People magazine in a little behind the scenes video about, I guess, what white women made her feel about her hair. Here we go.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
We understand about our hair as women of color, that the way our hair naturally grows out of our head is beautiful. But if we struggle to make it look like the standard, that means we are spending white women thousands of hours and lots of money straightening out what is naturally curly hair. Right? And that takes time.
Maureen Callahan
I'm gonna stop her right there. I'm gonna stop her right here. Then why is her hair straight in this video for People magazine? Why? I think she likes it that way. I think she likes the way she looks that way half the time.

Or.
Maureen Callahan
Or. Or she feels that in order to sell to white women, she needs to present with what she calls white looking hair. I'm reading between the lines, but it's not even that subtle, Michelle, in order to make us feel comfortable with her, because we couldn't possibly, possibly, possibly relate to a woman, a woman of color whose hair was natural or in braids. Okay? So we're gonna get back to this shit. And by the way, I say this as a woman who look at my hair.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
You.
Maureen Callahan
You know how many thousands of hours I've spent in shares, how much money I've spent doing this? I do it because I like the way it looks. And that's the price of. That's the cost of doing business. Shut up, Michelle. Shut up. Now, I also want to say that this reminded me of. I think I was first introduced to this as a kid, like a young teenager listening to the Howard Stern show back when he was funny, back when he was relevant. This piece of pop culture was released in 1970, and if you're not familiar, you can thank me later. And I actually love it. Like, I legitimately, no irony, love it as a piece of protest art. Okay? This originated as a poem and then became sort of a proto rap song by one Gil Scott Heron. And it predates Marvin Gaye's what's Going on by a year. And what's Going on by the Way is a timeless song, and it's as relevant today as it was back then and someday I'll do a whole Marvin Gaye segment because I could talk about that guy forever. I love Marvin Gaye so much. But anyway, this is a song written by Gil Scott Heron and performed by him about the difference in monies spent in underserved communities of color versus what was spent in, I guess, what Gill would. Would consider the province of the white man. It's freaking amazing. Let's go.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
One such poem, at least an early poem of ours that went in that direction, concerned the fact that millions and millions of dollars are continually sent into outer space while we continue to face the same problems here on the ground. Poem said, a rat done bit my sister Nell with Whitey on the moon. And her face and arms began to swell and Whitey's on the moon. I can't pay no doctor bills, but Whitey's on the moon. Ten years from now I'll be paying still while Whitey's on the moon. You know, the man just up my rent last night. Cause whitey's on the moon. No hot water, no toilets and no lights, but Whitey's on the moon.
Maureen Callahan
I love that so much. And Gil was striking a real chord in 1970. He really, really was. But I think Michelle Obama is still back there. She's been in the literal White House. She spent eight years as an adored first lady that mainstream media loved. Michelle Obama. She could do no wrong. But Michelle is stuck back in 1970 with Gil Scott Heron and Whitey's on the moon. Okay, now we've got a little bit of a carousel. We're going to show Michelle in her jeans. And Michelle just standing in a doorway all in again, she looks really stiff. She's like. She's like, hi, like, I'm Michelle Obama. Like, she almost looks like she should have. Have a. A serving tray on her palm. Like, I will be your. I. I will be helping you in first class today. Like, she doesn't look like a former first lady. She looks so uncomfortable with herself. And this. That is the whole point. Now we are going to get into. Oh, before we get into the. The Robin Roberts interview, I just want to talk a little bit about her second book, which, like, came and went. It was a. It was not a success. It was by no means comparable to becoming, which she had a ghostwriter for. And you know who told us that? Barack Obama, because he was sick of hearing about the success of becoming. He really was. He was saying to his friends, as reported by, like, legit, like, left leaning, like, you know, loving like, like publications that love the Obamas like Barack was like, yeah. People are asking me why my book isn't finished yet. And I'm telling you why. Because I don't have a ghostwriter like Michelle. She used a ghostwriter. So she did this with her second book. It was called the Light We Harry Overcoming in Uncertain Times. She sat again. She got an hour long prime time abc Sit Down Again with Robin Roberts. This book was priced at $35 retail. And I columned on this book for the Daily Mail when it was published in November 2022, just as the look is being published or has been published. What? Today, November 4th. Just in time for the holidays, by the way, Election day. Trust me when I say in book publishing, they think about everything. This is no accident. Anyway, as I wrote back then, I would have called, I would have titled more accurately Michelle O's second book Self Help for Dummies or Life Advice for Morons. And this is a sampling of her. I reprinted the advice. This is the sagacity that one Michelle Obama had to share with the rest of us everything she learned from her world travels, meeting people of all different races and ethnicities at all different class levels, war torn refugees, heads of state. You know, you think he would like absorb something specific to that life experience that you could give the rest of us. I realize I need to bring my voice down a notch because I am so fed up with this shit. This is what Michelle Obama wrote in her book of advice and I quote, it is okay to pace yourself, to get a little rest and speak of your struggles out loud. I've learned to recognize and appreciate balance when I feel it, when I feel it. We're qualifying everything. There's always something wrong in Michelle's myopic world. Again. It's so myopic and narcissistic for somebody who has had such an extraordinary like, set of circumstances in front of her, you know, resuming. Sometimes what I most need is just to take a walk outdoors or to sweat my way through a workout or get a full night of sleep. Our hurts become our fears. Our fears become our limits. Doubt comes from within. See your obstacles as building blocks and your vulnerabilities as strengths. Strengths. What you put out for others, whether it's love or hatred, will only create more of the same. My aside, you may know this as the ancient concept of karma. I continue casting a vote Matters. Paging Meghan Markle, who utters like platitudes like this all the time, as if, you know, she's like, come down from the acropolis. Okay, Emotions are not plans. Michelle writes, that is something you teach first graders, not adults. Adult women who have paid $35 of their hard earned money thinking that you are going to give them a fresh way of looking at the world or dealing with your problems. Michelle continues, emotions don't solve problems or right any wrong. You can feel them. You will feel them inevitably, because that's exactly what happens with emotions. That's baked into the definition. You feel just like lived experience. There's no such thing. You either have the experience or you don't. If you're dead, you're not having experiences, at least on the earthly plane. And this is what, this is what really greats me because that is filler. That is filling a book with filler. Because you've got a word count. When you sign a book contract, you sign. Typical book contract is like 80,000 to 90,000 words, tops. She was struggling, struggling to hit her word count, okay? And then in that supreme act of narcissism known as quoting oneself, going high is something you do rather than merely feel. And I have no idea what that means, okay? And I consider myself a pretty smart person. And I'm gonna guess you guys have no freaking idea what it means either, okay? She tried to brand herself as Oprah 2.0. It did not work. She became, actually, she didn't even bother to really become conversant in the lingua franca of self help that they try to shill specifically to middle class American women, okay? She has since abandoned ship Michelle Obama. She has left that. That is now the province of the likes of Hoda Kotb, who is failing at it. And that means we here at the Nerve are doing our job. Troublemakers. We are moving the culture. Hoda fell right off the New York Times bestseller list. And you know, it's like eating her up. She doesn't know what to do. We're going to talk to Rob Shooter. Oh, by the way, he's back. He's back next week. He was unavailable this week. He's back next week. And then there's that other, that other self help guru, that homicidal charlatan. Just my opinion, Elizabeth Gilbert. You know, Oprah's propping up. Oprah's got bigger problems coming her way and we're going to talk about it on the Nerve at night. I think you may know where I'm going with that now. So now Michelle has reinvented herself as a fashion, beauty and style icon because who better? Who better? Okay? And I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna be a bitch about it because Michelle Obama is selling a bunch of horseshit to us, okay? And she's got the mask on. She's got the, the fun friendly, I'm relatable Michelle Obama mask on. People magazine. Airbrush these teeth. I'm just going to say it. They fucking airbrush the teeth now. Michelle Obama. Oh, by the way, there's also an audio version of this book narrated by Michelle Obama, which is serious gall because this is a coffee table book and coffee table books are predominantly composed of images and the text is minimal at best. But her book isn't just about navel gazing about how fucking awesome she is. No, no, no. Michelle Obama with this book, and I quote, has given us, I believe this was, per Robin Roberts, a new way of looking at how we look. And I don't know by that whether Robin means how we look in our self presentation or how we look at aesthetics and style and what they mean and why they're important. But you know, we're not really. It's not a brain trust. It's not a brain trust. Okay, so here is Michelle laying out the prem. Because we have to lay out the premise of her new book on this hour long tongue bath. And you know, by the way, listen, it would not be a Michelle O. Production if there weren't some problems. Here we go.
Robin Roberts
You have a beautiful new book.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
It's called the Look. Thank you.
Robin Roberts
A deep dive into fashion and style. Why this topic?
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
Now I don't know if you noticed, but during my eight years in the White House, although there was a lot of attention given to my fashion, my physical appearance, all of that, I made it a point to shy away from that conversation.
Maureen Callahan
Oh, oh. Michelle Obama made it a point to shy away from that conversation. I guess that's why she did three Vogue covers in seven years. I guess that's why she, you know, she, she didn't want the conversation to be about the way she dressed and presented as the first lady of the United States of America, when in fact that's baked into the job description. And you have the extreme honor of representing this nation and you get to have a ton of fun with clothes that the rest of us could never afford and be dressed bespoke by high end designers any of us could only dream of meeting and then wearing such clothes and garments and gowns to meet some of the most consequential figures in modern history. But we're going to shy away from that because Michelle's a real intellect. Okay? Oh, and by the way, she Was worried it would become a distraction. But now she wants us to buy her book about all the looks that she wore in the White House. Again, logic is not a through line with Michelle Obama. She's not that bright. I'm sorry. She's not that bright. And I believe that I found the Princeton thesis, the very one that Christopher Hitchens found and read and said he couldn't make heads or tails of it, that it made no sense. And I felt the same, like it made no sense. Okay, we're looking at Michelle Obama's Vogue covers March 2009, right after the election. Another one from April 2011, before the election of 2012. And her farewell Vogue cover from. Or it was towards the end, right? So December 2016, she made Vanity Fair's international best dress list two years in a row. The New York Times, the Washington Post, wwd, W Magazine, Harper's Bazaar. I could go on. Spent reams of ink and column inches just singing the praises of this woman. Newsweek called her sophisticated yet relatable, feminine yet strong. A 21st century woman for a 21st century White House. On that final Vogue cover, Michelle Obama. And this is relevant because she's going to go in on how racist the fashion industry is and how she was the first one to point this out and wear marginalized designers. All right, listen, that final Vogue cover, she was wearing Carolina Herrera. Okay? Carolina Herrera, who has since retired. But, you know, you want to talk the epitome. And I loved Carolina Herrera, Carolina Herrera, but I'm never. These are Michelle Obama's words. Rich, white, older lady who specialized in dressing Upper east side socialites. Yet Michelle O wore Carolina Herrera on the COVID of Vogue. And then inside, she wore Atelier Versace. Okay, so where were the black designers then? Okay, Michelle, you were the first lady. Why don't you take it over to Anna Wintour for any one of your three Vogue covers. Now, here's what she told vogue in the 2016 tongue bath of a profile. Okay, Sorry to repeat myself. This is Michelle. Oh, and I quote, it all boils down to comfort level. If I'm going to make you comfortable, then I have to be comfortable first. So my first reaction when she is presented with a garment isn't important because we're contradicting ourselves. It isn't. Who made this Extrapolating. This is me. It also isn't what is the color, race, sex, and gender identification of the designer. No. Michelle says in this Vogue interview, her first reaction is, let's try it on. What does it look like? Oh, that's cute. Oh, wow. I never thought of wearing something like this. Let's put a belt on it. I feel good in this. And then. And that's to say nothing of the toned arms, which I think was the entire first term. The Obamas, when they in the White House that first four years, there were reams of Think pieces devoted to Michelle Obama's toned arms and the semiotics of her toned arms and what they meant for women and power and women of color and power. So shut up. Shut the fuck up. Now, this may be one of my favorite parts of this interview because it shows how Delulu Michelle Obama is. Okay, Robin, this is so embarrassing. First of all, Robin Roberts wants to make it very clear to the viewing audience at home. It's very important to her, Robin, that she communicates to us that she and Michelle Obama are friends. And again, legacy media wonders why. Okay, so Robin, who is also a woman in her 60s, I believe, asks Michelle if she would do what the kids online are calling a fit check. That's an outfit check. Okay? For those of us over the age of 13. Here we go.
Robin Roberts
Let's do a fit check right now.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
Okay?
Maureen Callahan
Okay.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
All right.
Maureen Callahan
All right.
Robin Roberts
So what were you thinking for today and the message you want to say?
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
I'm thinking we're at Marymount, we're with students, so I wanted to be a little relatable, a little cool, but, you know, throwback with the brooches, because that was. That's kind of a reminder that I did a lot of brooches. The most important thing is that it's cute.
Maureen Callahan
Oh, my God. She has such a high opinion of herself. Let's break this out fit apart, okay? Can we please? And by the way, if you're listening, I'm going to implore you, go to this section of the YouTube content because you have got to see what she is wearing. She's wearing what is referred to as a Canadian, like, leisure suit. What do we call that? I forget. But she's wearing denim on denim, okay? She's wearing what looks like nearly acid wash, faded gray denim, a denim jacket that is so the shoulder pads are so wide that she looks like a linebacker. And I am telling you, I think her team kind of fucking hates her. I do. People who loved her or had great affection for her or were treated well would never allow this, ever. So the shoulder pads are out to here for a woman, by the way, who we know her bet noir is that, you know, she. She can be considered at times to look a bit masculine. She's looking like a football player. And then we're wearing very high waisted denim jeans. I mean, they are coming up to basically her breasts. They're like cutting off any abdomen that's there. Okay. Then we've got a brooch. Again, how we looked was a distraction in the White House, but we do want to have a callback to what we wore while in the White House. And that was a lot of brooches. Brooches were our thing. She is wearing a three pronged black enormous brooch that looks like the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Okay. And then she says, the important thing is that it's. I look cute. You don't. You don't look cute. Oh, and she's got these coffin nails that are just hygienically disgusting. I don't know the level of, like, dust mites and whatever else you're collecting under those nails on any given day. And they're painted like this Tiffany blue. And no braids. Again, we're not wearing braids. And Robin's not wearing braids either. Robin's wearing those sneaker heels. Have you seen these things? They're like, they're not taking off. Like, I forget the designer who has really tried to make them like a thing. They're sneakers. But then they have, like, spike heels and they look ridiculous. Okay. And Robin Roberts is wearing them. She looks ridiculous. Robin asks Michelle if in 2007, right before entering the White House, she realized, oh, this is my. I hate this word. I want it eradicated from the lexicon. And you know, everyone who uses this word, they think they sound so smart. You sound like an idiot. Michelle, did you realize as the incoming first lady of the United States of America. And again, the subtext is here is black. You were the first black first lady. This racist country elected your husband, and they welcomed you with open arms. But you, quote, had to become more intentional with your fashion. Here we go.
Robin Roberts
And you also say, as a black woman, I was under a particularly white.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
Hot glare, making a mistake. In a political environment where you're the first and people are, where your opponents are using your race as a fear based strategy to make you seem like others, then everything matters.
Maureen Callahan
White hot glare. We've racialized the glare. The glare is white. She's a black woman. Oprah Winfrey, arguably back then. No, not even arguably. Empirically the most influential figure in American media. Black woman who America made a billionaire, used her considerable power to do something she had never done before. She endorsed Barack Obama. But this country is so racist that And. And, you know, you know, who else was dying to dress her and the girls and did it for the inauguration, no less. Jenna Lyons over at J. Crew. J. Crew. Jenna Lyons was then the creative director, I believe that was her title. And Mickey Drexler, a white man, was the head of J.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
Crew.
Maureen Callahan
And they dressed her. But, you know, we're just racist nation. And everyone was just looking to pick her apart. Pick her apart. Okay, Now, Michelle talks about the lack of diversity in designers, and basically what she's saying, hey, all those other first Ladies that came before me. Racist Nobody. Sorry, that was Oprah adjacent. I don't know. Like, I don't know what's happening to me. Anyway, Michelle goes on to give herself some flowers here and congratulate herself for picking Jason Wu for her inaugural gown. Jason Wu seems lovely. His career has not taken off. Okay. Narciso Rodriguez, who does not need the likes of Michelle Obama. Narciso got famous because he worked with Carolyn Bessette before she married JFK Jr. And he designed her wedding dress, and that made him a household name. Okay. But he's got to pay fealty. And we're going to have some tears brimming as well when we talk about Michelle. And then Tracey Reese, who is a black female American designer. I personally really like Tracey Reese, both as a designer and a person. I interviewed her for my fashion book about the 90s champagne supernovas. Lovely. But that also didn't turn Tracey Reese into a superstar. So, Michelle, I mean, I don't know why you just never talked to Anna Wintour about the lack of diversity in fashion or over at Vogue, but let's go.
Robin Roberts
You talked about the diversity and representation, and I don't have to tell you, it's under siege right now. And you said it's not only important for fashion, but for society as well.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
You know, I think we know this as a country. We know better than this. I'm still thinking about the country that elected Barack Obama overwhelmingly as president twice. We are still those people. It's just that sometimes we can get lost in the struggles that we face. And when folks are facing tough economic times, when jobs are scarce, when opportunities seem to be less, it's easy to have somebody make you think it's somebody else's fault. But when we look around at truly who has built this country, it's all of us. And all of us.
Maureen Callahan
Okay, okay, okay, okay. I don't know what that this has to do about a book. A book about fashion. A book about Michelle Obama's Fashion when she was in the White House. Except to say that we are racist. Except for when we voted for Barack Obama not once, but twice. Overwhelmingly. But then we. But we were racist enough to be trying to pick apart Michelle Obama's looks while she was on the COVID of Vogue three times in seven years. You know, and, you know, designers were falling all over themselves to dress her. I don't know. I don't. I'm confused. I'm lost again. I consider myself a pretty intelligent person. I'm lost. Now, the designers were not allowed to talk to Michelle directly. No. They had to film themselves paying fealty to what Michelle Obama did for them, which is a whole lot of nothing. Okay? They're not rich and famous. They're not now. Then she goes. She's at Marymount, which is near her D.C. mansion. Okay? She did not go for a book about fashion. She was not willing to travel to the two most famous legitimate fashion institutions in America. That's FIT or Parsons School of Design. She's not going there. Okay? And then she does the thing where she surprises the students, right? Like, Robin Roberts enters the room first, the classroom. And she. And Michelle Obama does this all the time. She loves to do this, where she has her host, her interviewer enter a room and say, hey, you guys, like, To a group of unsuspecting people. You're never gonna guess who's with me, who's right behind me. You'll never guess. You'll never guess, right? And then in comes Michelle. And I'm telling you guys, with each passing year, the reaction becomes more and more muted to the point where I wonder, like, how many of these kids know or care who she is or actually are not fans? Because in this special. And you should go look at it on Hulu, like, she. Michelle comes in, she's like, I'm here. I'm me, and I'm here. And the kids are like, oh, okay, okay. And then Rob. And then she.
Sponsor/Ad Voice
She.
Maureen Callahan
She makes an effort to. To interact with the design students, the fashion design students. And she's like. It's like she's Tim Gunn on Project Runway. And she's like, show me what you're doing here. Show me what you're doing. Oh, I love a bodice. I love a bodice and a full skirt. And Robin, her VO is Mrs. Obama's command of draping and design. Get out. We see the way she dresses on her podcast. She has zero fashion sense. And she puts that hair into two pom poms on the top of her head. She's a 60 something year old woman or 60 per people. I don't even know. You know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? Again, proof to me that her team hates her. And she, she not only there's a difference between having no taste and having bad taste. And Michelle Obama, when she is left to her own devices, has bad, bad taste. Now we are going to get to some controversy, namely Michelle war again. Her team fucking hates her. Beginning, beginning of the Obama presidency. Michelle going to meet Queen Elizabeth II since deceased at Buckingham Palace. A state visit. The world is there. The world's media is there. And Michelle walked in that room wearing a black cardigan that looked like she got it on the sail rack at J.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
Crew.
Maureen Callahan
And that here we go.
Robin Roberts
On her very first international trip in 2009, there was outrage over the casual look. The first lady, he chose to meet the Queen.
Maureen Callahan
We have to discuss the President and the first lady and the Queen. So they were in London. I mean, listen, you, you're learning on the job as first lady.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
And protocol is one of those things.
Maureen Callahan
That can be really tricky. And certainly the cardigan issue made headlines. Should she have worn a cardigan to meet the Queen? Should she not?
Robin Roberts
But on her next trip to London in 2011, it was a different story. The first lady got rave reviews when she wore a Tom Ford gown to Buckingham Palace.
Maureen Callahan
He made a beautiful pleated gown that I basically carried around like a little baby so that it wouldn't get messed up. It just transported you. And it was just this, this classic, beautiful look.
Robin Roberts
It was a little look that echoed Jackie Kennedy when she and President Kennedy visited the same queen 50 years earlier.
Maureen Callahan
Okay. First of all, outrage, the word that Robin used over the sweater, there was not outrage. Okay? But there, there were questions raised. Like why the f. Is our first lady going over to meet Queen Elizabeth in a, in a cardigan sweater? In a cheap cardigan sweater that looks like disrespectful. Okay? And it was. And even, even very friendly outfits like the Huffington Post were like, michelle, wtf, okay? And by the way, this excuse that was given by that author that about the White House. Oh, you know, when you're your first lady, like, issues of protocol can be tricky. Yeah. That's why all first ladies are given a right hand person who knows that shit inside and out so you don't make a rookie mistake like that. And if I'm Michelle Obama, if I'm Michelle Obama, after Tom Ford comes in and corrects that. And not only does it but does it like the genius he is? I love Tom Ford so much, I'm asking Tom Ford to be my official designer. My entire tenure in the White House. Be my official designer. And if you can't do that, Tom, would you please just be a sounding board? Can I just run everything by you? The decision to echo the gown that Jackie Kennedy wore to the exact same monarch at the exact same location was genius. And the only problem is Michelle Obama can't walk the way Jackie could. Okay? She's. She's not moving in an elegant manner. Okay, now we're. We're pressed for time, so I got to skip over the daughters. I got to skip over what she says about her daughters wearing her clothes. I'm going to tell you something. You see those girls walking around? They look like unmade beds. They do. They're vaping or they're smoking in public. Barack, by the way, is nowhere to be found. Nowhere to be found.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
Found.
Maureen Callahan
And we're going to talk to our pal Mark Bowden, who's coming back very soon when Michelle talks about their date nights. Okay? We're going to take that apart like the crime scene it is. Now, there's a whole chapter in this new book called Hair Journey. Hair Journey. Again, Journey is a destination. It's a geographical trip from point A to point B. Our hair is not a journey. Oh, my God. Now her bangs caused a stir. And guess what, you guys? That's because we're all racist. It's because we're all racist. And then Robin Roberts admits that they were caused such a stir that even Robin asked Michelle about the bangs in a GMA interview. But I guess that doesn't make Robin racist, because Robin's black. And I think at the time, now Michelle wore braids to her and Barack's. Oh, by the way, you know why I wanted to show the clip about the girls and I, we can't do it. But there was a major grammatical error committed by Michelle Obama when she's telling Robin Roberts about the clashes she and Barack would have over how the girls dressed in their downtime. And, you know, Barack didn't approve a lot. And she says me and Barack would disagree. So Princeton grad. Me and Barack would disagree. And, you know, listen, we all like misspeak. I certainly misspeak on this podcast, but I try to correct myself in real time. And again, none of Michelle's people stopped that interview and said, michelle, correct yourself. Make them roll back the tape and make them insert that. Which they could have, but they didn't. And I'm telling you, this is going to my theory that her people effing hate her anyway. The unveiling of the official portraits of Barack and Michelle at the White House in 2022. Michelle wore braids because now we're liberated because we don't live in the White House anymore under the white hot glare of racism. But her portrait, in her portrait, she has straight hair. So why. Here we go.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
That was intentional, but it was like having me, the former first lady, a black woman, show up in the world in her natural hair. Even if I didn't do it for those eight years, I understood the importance of doing it at the at some point and signaling a message to young girls and to professionals out there, stay out of our hair. You know, we're just trying to get to work and do it fast and efficiently. Don't tell a black woman how to wear her hair.
Maureen Callahan
Nobody's telling you how to wear your hair. Clearly you come out out with pom poms on your podcast all the time. Nobody's effing telling you how to wear your hair. They should, but they're not because they respect your boundaries. And by the way, this is all such bullshit because, you know, Karine Jean Pierre hit that White House podium. Another one out on her book tour hit that White House briefing room every day in her natural curls, and she looked great. I think she's an idiot, but she looked great. And now she's out on a press tour wearing hair that Michelle would, I guess, consider white women hair. And, you know, she doesn't look as attractive. Karine Jean Pierre looked great with her natural curls. So Michelle can shove it. Buy my book, you racist white ladies. Okay, listen, this book is gonna hit the bestseller list. The New York Times bestseller list. It is a given. But let's do our job, troublemakers, and make sure it lives there for like a week, and then it's gone. Okay? I'm sure this thing is priced at, like, 69 bucks. Now at the end of the interview, the real Michelle Obama comes out. The real Michelle Obama comes out. Like all mega narcissists. Just my opinion. Just my opinion. They can only keep the mask affixed for so long. Michelle's got a book she's selling. She's got it here, cheerful and happy and relatable. And, you know, we got to do that if we want to make all of our money and all of this and prove that we're relevant, because the podcast is not doing so. Okay? And brother Craig, by the way, hasn't been conscripted either to talk about how fantastic and stylish his sister is. You know, my brother Bill was on our Halloween episode, and I was in a costume, and he, like, he gave me a very nice compliment, said, you look fantastic. I didn't see that coming. That's because my brother actually likes me. Okay. And I actually enjoy my brother. You know, Craig, as we know, is terrified of Michelle. Terrified. But he's. He's not around either. Okay? Now and again, Michelle is trying to convince us all that she's the most beautiful and stylish and relevant first lady to not only inhabit the White House and then have an afterlife that extends beyond and irrelevance that extends beyond since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. And not so never. It's sacrilege. So just stop, okay? Just stop. But now we're towards the end of the interview. We're towards the end of the interview. Excuse me, I did not articulate that properly. And we are hungry probably. I mean, I know we're on Ozempic and we're not supposed to talk about that or whatever GLP1 she's on, but Michelle Obama has lost more than half of her body weight very quickly. And none of us are allowed to ask about it, even though we are talking about how we look. Selling a book about how we look. It's the end of the interview. I think we're a little cranky. I think all of that energy expended and being fun and sitting up straight and playing ball, we're exhausted by it. The mask comes off. Okay, listen to this answer. Listen to this answer. That Michelle, that this interview pretty much concludes with. Here we go.
Michelle Obama (quoted/interviewed)
They are the people who are with team. Have been with me through this slog of life.
Maureen Callahan
This slog of life. Okay? She's. She's talking about her personal makeup artist, her personal stylist, her personal hair person who travel with her everywhere she goes so she can look the best she can possibly look. I'm just gonna be a bitch about it. It's a heavy lift. Stop. Stop with this. And then we. We who have made her a very, very, very wealthy woman. Famous, adored. This slog of life. She is a miserable, miserable piece of work. Do not waste your money on this book. Okay, next up, next up, we've got your feedback. We are back in a minute. We are back. Now, before we get into your emails, I have to. So I, over the weekend I was, it was like a very lazy weekend and I just wanted something on in the background and I stumbled upon Gone Girl, David Fincher's Gone Girl with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. And I've actually come to really appreciate that movie. When I first saw it, I didn't love it. And now I really, really. It's like a lot of Fincher, you know, like either it really hits you or sometimes it works on you. And then you really can appreciate he's brilliant. But anyway, so Ben Affleck, I got to the part where he's his wife has been missing for like a week or two and he knows she's alive and everybody thinks he killed her. And he's going on, he's going, he's doing a prime time interview to try to not only clear his name but to talk to Amy who he knows is out there, his evil wife Amy. And I forgot about this part of the movie because there's a thing that figures very prominently in it. And so this is the part where he's doing the interview with the network primetime goddess that is Celia Ward. And she says to him, now, Nick. He plays Nick Dunn in the movie. Nick, if. If your wife is out there and alive and listening to you, what would you like to say to her? And then I. You guys, I died. And I made a note and I texted Marlena and I was like, can we please put this in Tuesday's Nerve? And she said, of course we can. Here we go.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
Amy, I love you.
Maureen Callahan
You're the best person I've ever known.
Robin Roberts
And I've taken myself to the woodshed for the way that I.
Maureen Callahan
He says, I've taken myself to the woodshed. And in the movie, there is a literal woodshed that, like, Amy has filled with a bunch of, like, stuff she's using to frame her husband for her murder, which she staged. I mean, it's wild. And the woodshed comes up, and I just, you know, it's now part of Nerve lore. We're taking it. We're taking it. Okay. Troublemaker emails. This from troublemaker Jean. Just letting you know I'm dying to hear Maureen's commentary of Rebecca Miller's doc on Scorsese's career. I am loving it. You know, this is a great reminder. I gotta watch it. I gotta watch it. I will get back to you. Hello, Maureen and Nerve family from English Bully show idea. What's in Maureen's bag And Tim's with a. With a smiley face. Forgive me for being late to the Jennifer Aniston what's in my bag party, referencing the segment we did on Jennifer Aniston's little cute video what's in my Bag. And it's supposed to be this very personal, relatable segment. And instead she's pulling out of this bottomless bag bottles of. A bottle of smart water, a bottle of vital proteins, her p volve equipment. Like I said, she should just become like a NASCAR driver and just slap the endorsements all over one's self. It was disgusting. How much money does Jennifer Aniston need Now? Returning to English Bully. I recently lost my Boston terrier Hancock. I am so sorry. Our ritual was to take a long walk every morning, listening to the nerves. New episodes she got new. Two new puppies who have to be least trained. Pain in my ass. I understand completely. But it has given me time to catch up on everything. And I have found, Maureen, that instead of making me sad, listening to you makes me remember all of the good times together. This is the loveliest email. Having said all the sad stuff, we all want to Know what's in your bag and what mascara will Tim recommend? I bet you one thing, your bag will have a book. You know what? If you guys want us to do it, we'll do it. And I have to say this, I have to use this opportunity. There's a troublemaker out there named Victoria who is so lovely. And Victoria emailed me and said, hey, I noticed you like to wear pearls a lot on your show. And I do, I wear them all the time in life, in general. And she said, I hand make pearl necklaces and I would love to make one for you. Would you mind? Could I do it? And I said, are you kidding? And they just arrived. You guys, look at this. This beautiful packaging. Victoria, you really like. This is so sweet. She wrote this beautiful, beautiful note. Her brand is called Boniface, if I'm saying it correctly. B, O, N, I, F, A, C. And it just arrived. And Victor, I have to show it to you guys. It's so beautiful. Look at this, you guys, look at this. I cannot wait to wear this. I will be wearing it on at least one nerve this week. Victoria, you are a gem. You are a gem and you are very, very talented. Now back to our emails from troublemaker Dina, the Morning Show. Can we please address the subject of Alex's do? That is the Jennifer Aniston character on the Morning Show? In previous seasons, we saw that she had one, even though it's clear the writers have never owned a dog, as he only shows up when convenient. Has this dog even been on the show this season? I don't think I've seen him. My dog never leaves my side when I'm at home. Same. I have a Velcro dog. Okay, like the anxiety, the codependence, I blame Covid. Okay, so why don't they have him sitting around the living room when Alex Levy is sitting on the couch? This season, she has a photo of her dog as a screensaver. Is he still around? Also, please call out the insufferable George Clooney. Not to mention coming up in the next segment, you read our minds. Dear Maureen, regarding Amy Griffin, who we're also going to give an update on either later today or on the Nerve at night. I am sure that Amy's husband, Amy Griffin's husband reminds her that she came from nothing. She didn't. But she's not. She didn't come from billionaire money. Amy is just the first wife. That is a savage cut. And I think you're true. I think you're right. And you know, I don't think that the New York Times, which picked up our thread at the Nerve where we said her book about claiming she was brutally, systematically raped at the age of 12 by a schoolteacher or a gym teacher holds water. And the New York Times ran a devastating piece. I don't think this sits too well with the likes of John Griffin. And I wouldn't be surprised if Amy is just the first wife. And we're going to stay on it. Our troublemaker continues. So Amy had to do something that made her famous. Why not use her husband's money to buy her a ghostwriter and create an identity for herself? Amy is now being interviewed by famous friends who she bought, by the way. Just my opinion. She purchased them. Without the book, she would not be interviewed for being a billionaire's wife and using her husband's business of making ketamine, the new wonder drug, is her way of offsetting the money he paid for the publishing. Etc. Agreed. Hi, Maureen. Some juicy developments from Planet Morning Television. Looks like Gail the astronaut is going to be ousted to another planet. Come back to the Nerve at night. Tomorrow we are going all in on Gail again. When this happened, I texted producer Marlena immediately. I said, I think we need to move some stuff around. And she said, I agree. I can't wait to share this one with you guys. You're gonna love it. I think you're really gonna love it. Okay, now, a friendly reminder. Also, my dermatologist, as you know, Jessica Weiser, I said to Marlena is the brilliant one with puns. But I came up with what I should call Dr. Weiser's segments. I think they should be called so much the wiser because she is a brilliant, brilliant doctor, brilliant woman. The questions are coming in hot. Like, we're getting so many questions from you guys and we've got them racked up. But I want to speak to the straight male contingent of the Nerve audience of the Nerve Troublemakers. You often call yourselves manly men. The manly men who work really, really manly jobs, who are in the Marines, what have you. Some of you have given yourselves a designation that I die for. You're calling yourselves Mo bros. And we died over this so much that we are actually carving out new Birch for the so called Mobo contingent. Okay, it's going to be for you manly dudes. This is a call to those manly men, those straight male listeners out there. We want to hear from you, too. We'll keep your names anonymous if you like, no problem. But avail yourself, please, of the genius that is one Dr. Jessica Weiser. She can answer any skin question you've got. And male skin, like female skin. As you age, as your hormones fluctuate, things change. You may have questions. You may want to know what works, what doesn't, what you can do. And she, by the way, she can answer questions about hair too. Just saying, hair growth, hair loss, whatever. She, she does it for women, she does it for men. So just get, get your questions in. Get them in. I'm gonna say by, by end of day today. Get them in by end of day today by like midnight eastern if you can. Okay, coming up, we have a our celeb roundup and it's, it's dynamite. It's dynamite. But first, also, just a quick reminder. You can email me at Devil Maureen, excuse me. Welcome back. Okay, we are going to have to sort of go through this like it's like a battering, but it's, it's going to be quick, quick hits that are just to die for. Number one. Number one. Did you guys see? And we're going to talk about the power moves that Prince William is making on the nerve at night. I'm so into it. Is there anything more attractive than like an alpha male getting shit done? I think not. Okay. Meghan Markle in the wake of everything that's been going on in the UK and Prince William making very clear that his sights are now set on Harry and Meghan and those titles, they better live it up now because he's taken them. There's no question in my mind, none. She is still trying to convince us that she and Harry are having the most fun, just the most fun over in Montecito. So she via People magazine. This didn't even go up on her Instagram. It had to go up via People. And there's only one way People got it because this, this thing came from Meghan and Harry. They are watching the end of the World Series and we'll look at it and then I will talk to you about it on the back end. Here we go. Oh my God. Now, I didn't narrate it because it's so short, but if you're listening, here's the setup. This looks like surveillance footage from like a ring camera that has caught like a homicide being committed, like a murder being committed. And in this case it's the murder of Harry's soul. Like he's Dead inside. They are sitting in what looks like their screening room. And it looks like it is outfitted with like really unfortunate lazy boys and, you know, for royals, no offense to anybody who loves a La Z boy. I know they've been modernizing their look, but like, it's not what one would think of for Harry and Meghan, you know what I'm saying? Like, Meghan's such a snobbed. She thinks she's like a design expert, but they've got lazy boys all over the place in this really grim looking, low ceilinged, artless, like. I mean, there are no works of art on the walls there. And Harry's sitting alone. He's sitting alone in like a grubby T shirt and what looks like sweatpants. And he's staring grimly at the TV or whatever they're screening on the wall. You know, they're screening the game on the wall. No friends are there. Harry has no friends there. Now, when there are huge sporting events, it is customary for straight men, you manly men I'm talking to in the trouble, troublemaker contingent, you have your friends over, you get a bunch of beer or non alcoholic, near beer, you know, you get the food and it's a party. And it's all you do. You party all night watching this game. But Harry's alone, okay? And he looks again so depressed. And then in comes Meghan to the frame, like hopping over to Harry, I guess her team has won. And she kisses him. And that's Harry's cue to smack a smile on that face. Get a smile on your fucking face, man, because we're happier than ever. Even though what happened to your uncle is about to happen to us. William's gonna make what? The humiliations and degradations that Andrew is undergoing? Child's play. And then Megan turns around and starts jumping up and down with her friend that we've never heard of. And her friend gets the cue to start jumping up and down and they start screeching. And the screec is like unbearable. It's. It's like unbearable. And it's not. It's not the kind of screeching that comes from unmitigated spontaneous joy. It is staged affected screeching. And this is Harry's life. And I don't feel sympathy for him. This is a prison of his own making. Here are some of the comments, okay? And by the way, this is great that it wound up on people's IG because, you know, Megan has her comments permanently turned off. You fucking cowardly. You liar. Coward. Meghan Markle. Just my opinion. Here are the comments. A true American Horror Story. Oh my God. What's that screeching? This is what Harry has to put up with. So embarrassing. Could this be more cringe? No. This is the worst post of all time. That is the fakest staged video I've ever seen. And finally, what is this now? I got the the Virginia Giuffre book. I have it right here. And we're going to talk about it on Friday's Nerve. I really want to sit with it and get into it. Moving on to Diddy. Diddy. We got the first images of Diddy behind bars and backward. Got him. We can't show them, but you can find them online. They're fuzzy. He's at a federal penitentiary, I believe in New Jersey where they have like a serious substance abuse program. We do know the guy has real drug and alcohol issues. But a new report emerged that, and I hope this just continues, that Diddy continues to be sued into oblivion because he's only doing like two to four. He's doing two years. He got four. He's doing two. So this is a lawsuit, I believe, brought by another male who says Diddy sexually assaulted him. The. The salient details in this lawsuit are that a ditty's member it has was commonly referred to among those who know as a Tootsie Roll. So I guess they mean like it's thick but short. It would explain a lot. It would explain a lot. And then the other detail which I find beyond creepy is that Diddy, this, this individual witnessed Diddy take a shirt that belonged to Biggie Smalls, who it is believed by many in the hip hop world that Diddy had murdered. They were like this. But Diddy may allegedly reportedly have been the one that Diddy took one of Biggie's shirts and masturbated with it and then climaxed into it. And I find this very creepy because it would go to my theory that Diddy was consumed with jealousy over Biggie's natural gifts and talents. Now, Biggie Smalls, was he a great guy? No. Was he a drug dealer? Yeah. Did he do some really bad shit? Yeah. Was he undeniably talented and did Ready to Die shift the hip hop landscape the same way that Nirvana's Nevermind shifted the rock landscape in the early 90s? Yes. Now on to oh related into music. DJ Diplo. You know, imagine like sometimes I watch act as Hollywood just to like keep my hands in and like I look at the new the, the Hollywood news they report and I'M like, they would have so much more fun over here. This is all the shit you would never see on Access Hollywood. Like, the flip side. Or they would just, like, do the. The publicist, like, cleanup. Because this item has some publicist cleanup going on. And I'm not buying it. None of us. It's nerve central here, buying it. And you're not going to either. Diplo, the dj, did an interview with the Smart Girl Dumb Questions podcast, and he talked about how he knows one Justin Trudeau, who, as we all know, is hot and heavy right now with Gayle King's fellow astronaut, Katy Perry. Let's listen to this.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
And now Katy Perry is dating Justin Trudeau.
Maureen Callahan
I know.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
Pretty fire.
Maureen Callahan
I know so many people who like.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
Kind of dated Katy Perry. Like me.
Maureen Callahan
Oh, did you date Katy Perry? I meant Trudeau.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
Oh, I did date Trudeau, too.
Maureen Callahan
Yeah, that's gonna go. That was a weird one, though.
Sponsor/Ad Voice
Really?
Maureen Callahan
Why?
Co-host or Guest Commentator
Because I'm just not.
Maureen Callahan
He's a prudent.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
I'm not in the positions.
Maureen Callahan
Now, he went on to say, that was a weird one, though. And. And the podcaster says, why? And he says, because I'm not really into politicians. Now, the cleanup has been that Diplo was joking, and now that's. Those are the reports going around. Oh, Diplo was just joking. Like, so much of the mainstream media is just repeating the publicist spin, to which I say, go watch that clip for yourself, and you tell me if you think he's joking. I don't think he's joking. In fact, I think he looks like Justin Trudeau's type. Okay, now we're gonna talk a little bit about George Clooney, who has a movie calling out, coming out. Excuse me. Called J. Kelly, which I'm very interested in. And George Clooney's done a lot of stuff that I like. I loved out of Sight, one of my favorite movies of the 1990s. If not, it's definitely in my top five. Maybe my top three. I loved Michael. Is it Michael Collins? What was the. What was that? Michael. I forget what it was called. Michael Clayton. I loved him in Michael Clayton. He's done a lot of stuff I really like. He's had some hits and misses, and I like him as a movie star. In this movie, Jay Clooney, he plays a movie star who's sort of confronting like that. There's nobody inside. We'll see how the movie is. But he did a lengthy sit down with CBS Sunday Morning, and you gotta give it where they deserve it. And George, I Think you would admit you deserve this. He talks about sort of trying to expand from his, as so many of them do, into geopolitical strategies and solving internecine warfare and crises. Here's Clooney on CBS Sunday Morning. I worked on trying to help solve.
Robin Roberts
Some of the problems in Darfur in the early 2000s.
Maureen Callahan
Failed.
Co-host or Guest Commentator
You failed more often than you succeeded.
Maureen Callahan
And so we see the B roll of a much younger George Clooney in a flak jacket on the ground in Darfur. And he has the gall to say, yeah, I tried to solve that problem. I tried to solve that problem. You. He made him. You make movies. Okay, Leave it to finer minds. And by the way, you guys, you know, speaking of, I saw, I watched Kathryn Bigelow's new movie, House of Dynamite, and I fucking hated it. And the screenwriter, Noah Oppenheim, I like Kathryn Bigelow's films a lot. I think she's a very talented filmmaker. This film is beneath her. I think whatever was good about it was all her. It was written by this guy named Noah Oppenheim who used to be the head of NBC News. And I believe he got turfed out during the Matt Lauer Harvey Weinstein scandal when it was revealed that when Ronan Farrow revealed that NBC News killed his reporting that would have outed Harvey as a serial rapist. Noah Oppenheim had to leave. He wrote. His first film that he wrote was called Jackie. It was, it was a film about Jackie Kennedy in the aftermath of the JFK assassination. And I fucking hated that movie too, because Noah Oppenheim depicted Jackie Kennedy as a chain smoking drunk who was stumbling her way through, through the assassination and the planning of that funeral. And it was sacrilege. And I think Noah Oppenheim's a hack and I could have done so much better with this movie. And I've never even written a screenplay. No, actually I have. But Like A House of Dynamite is objectively terrible. Idris Elba plays the president. Okay, first of all, every American in this movie who's like the president or the head of like, you know, nuclear tracking and everybody's British, they're all British actors whose accents keep slipping and they're supposed to be the elite of the elite in American government. And then the president gets the word that like a nuclear missile is headed to Chicago and it's gonna hit in 15 minutes. And he's like, what do I do? Holy shit, what do I do? It's ridiculous. Onto Cynthia Nixon again. We're like, it's like the melding like These celebrities and politics and all this stuff. Cynthia Nixon is a fucking moron. Again, we can't stand her. Now, again, we're not political here at the Nerve, but Cynthia Nixon is an out gay woman and she is out there banging the drum for her fellow New Yorkers to elect this homophobe. This homophobe who pals around with people who, like in one case, an imam who testifies a character witness for 1 of the 1993 World Trade center bombers. Okay, photo of him with this guy, arm in arm, smiling ear to ear. Secondly, palling around with a Ugandan official. His mother. He's born in Uganda. His mother and father have a compound in Uganda. It's like, worth $5 million. The Airbnb it. He's again, arm in arm, smiling with a Ugandan politician who at best puts gay people in jail for being gay. At best, they go to jail. You know what? At worst, they do. But here's Cynthia Nixon telling her fellow New Yorkers why they should vote for this homophobe. Go for it. I just want to say this is a moment to take our city forward. Do you remember how freaked out everybody was about Obama and that he didn't have enough experience or that he was like a black separatist or whatever that crap was they were putting out? This is a moment like this. Okay, okay. Enjoy it, Enjoy it. The Fox is in the hen house still. Cynthia, I can't stand her now. I actually also. I think this is going to impact her, her getting hired. I do. She's way too political. And she's also just a dummy. You're a dummy. Okay, now onto Julia Fox for Halloween. Julia Fox, who is not. She's just not talented enough to be getting booked, like, to book acting jobs. She's just not. So she resorts to stuff like this. For Halloween, she dressed up again. We have a theme emerging here in today's episode as Jackie Kennedy in the pink Chanel suit and the pillbox hat splattered with blood all over it. And I can't tell you how quickly people started texting and DMing me this image. Obviously, you know, I wrote, Jackie is the woman who appears most in Ask Not. She has four separate chapters for four distinct eras of her life. And one of those chapters concerns the lead up to the assassination, the assassination itself, how she got the country and herself and her children through it. And then in later chapters, the ways in which it haunted Jackie for the rest of her life. Back then, they didn't know what PTSD was, let alone have the diagnosis of ptsd, she had it for the rest of her life. November was forever her darkest month. She confided to some of the people closest to her that for the rest of her life, she felt like a freak, because who could ever understand what she went through that day? So, Julia Fox, if you care to read her tortured explanation as to why what she did was empowering and feminist and a tribute to Jackie O, have at it. But I think you're disgusting. I think that you're lame. I think there's nothing you won't do for clicks and likes. And I really, really loathe living in a culture where everybody will do anything and justify anything as long as it gets them attention. Because bad attention is better than no attention. And I guarantee you, if you ask Jackie O if she could trade that day for a life of anonymity, she would have done it in a heartbeat. That's it. That's it for your Tuesday edition of the Nerve. Episode: Michelle Obama's Whiny "Look" Tour, Ben Affleck Takes Himself to the Woodshed, and New Diddy Details
Date: November 4, 2025
Host: Maureen Callahan | MK Media
In this frank, witty, and often searing episode, Maureen Callahan tears into recent pop culture moments and celebrity news, with Michelle Obama’s new book and media tour as the centerpiece. Maureen’s signature blend of pop culture knowledge, sharp skepticism, and unapologetic honesty targets Michelle Obama’s reinvention as a style icon, Ben Affleck’s cinematic self-flagellation, the latest on Diddy’s legal woes, and assorted celebrity and royal scandals. The tone is biting, irreverent, and unsparing—no conversation too taboo for "The Nerve" audience, aka the "Troublemakers."
Main Points:
Insights:
People Magazine & Style Critique:
Maureen dissects Michelle’s People magazine shoot, noting how stiff and contrived the poses appear.
"She has like two moves and she feels very stiff ... she can’t dance. And you know, that is a trope about white people. And I’m only saying that because Michelle Obama has managed to racialize everything, including this book." (05:56)
Racialization of Hair & Self-Presentation:
Maureen takes issue with Michelle’s comments on hair and aesthetics:
"We struggle to make it look like the standard, that means we are spending white women thousands of hours and lots of money straightening out what is naturally curly hair. Right? And that takes time." – Michelle Obama, People magazine video (06:16)
Maureen responds:
"Then why is her hair straight in this video for People magazine? Why? I think she likes it that way." (06:40)
Comparisons and Cultural Flashbacks:
Drawing from Gil Scott-Heron’s “Whitey on the Moon,” Maureen juxtaposes radical protest art with Michelle’s present-day messaging:
"Gil was striking a real chord in 1970... But I think Michelle Obama is still back there. She’s been in the literal White House. She spent eight years as an adored First Lady..." (09:38)
Critique of Past Self-Help Books:
Maureen eviscerates the advice in Michelle’s previous book for being banal and filler:
"As I wrote back then, I would have titled more accurately Michelle O’s second book Self Help for Dummies or Life Advice for Morons." (13:07)
Media Image vs. Reality:
Michelle’s claims of avoiding fashion-focused conversations are undermined by her extensive Vogue coverage and fashion accolades.
Excerpts from Robin Roberts’ Interview:
Fashion Industry Critique & Racialization: Michelle cites the "white-hot glare" she felt as the first Black First Lady, which Maureen quickly challenges as revisionist.
"As a Black woman, I was under a particularly white-hot glare, making a mistake… everything matters." – Michelle Obama to Robin Roberts (27:10)
Maureen responds:
"White-hot glare. We’ve racialized the glare. The glare is white." (27:30)
Icon Status and Team Dynamics:
Maureen suggests Michelle’s stylists and team do her no favors, referencing a failed "fit check" outfit ("Canadian leisure suit" and "linebacker" silhouette) and over-airbrushed magazine photos.
Hair as a Narrative:
Michelle's "hair journey" is lampooned, with Maureen noting inconsistencies (e.g., straight hair on book cover, braids only after leaving the White House).
"That was intentional, but it was like having me, the former first lady, a Black woman, show up in the world in her natural hair. Even if I didn’t do it for those eight years, I understood the importance of doing it at some point and signaling a message..." – Michelle Obama (39:18)
Maureen: "Nobody's telling you how to wear your hair..." (39:51)
Final Takedown: On Michelle referring to her post-FLOTUS existence as a "slog of life":
"She is a miserable, miserable piece of work. Do not waste your money on this book." (43:02)
Key Quote:
Maureen singles out this scene as an indelible, meta-moment worthy of “Nerve” canon—poking fun at celebrity self-flagellation (“taking himself to the woodshed”).
Highlights:
Meghan & Harry’s Faux-Joy Video:
Maureen lampoons the “grim” vibe of their World Series viewing clip, calling it “the murder of Harry’s soul” (58:37).
"This is Harry’s life. And I don’t feel sympathy for him. This is a prison of his own making." (58:37)
Diddy’s Legal Troubles & Rumors:
Updates on Diddy’s incarceration, lawsuits against him, and disturbing rumors.
“A new report emerged… Diddy’s member… was commonly referred to … as a Tootsie Roll. So I guess they mean like it's thick but short…” (61:19)
Diplo "Joking" about Justin Trudeau:
Maureen disputes the claim that Diplo’s statement about dating Justin Trudeau was a joke.
“Go watch that clip for yourself, and you tell me if you think he's joking. I don't think he's joking.” (66:59)
George Clooney’s Global Aspirations:
Maureen derides Clooney’s statements about trying to "solve" Darfur's conflict:
“He talks about sort of trying to expand … into geopolitical strategies and solving internecine warfare… You make movies. Okay, leave it to finer minds.” (68:55)
Recent Celebrity Gaffes:
The episode is acerbic, direct, and unsparing. Maureen speaks with biting irreverence and pop-culture fluency, unafraid of controversial opinions or mockery. She uses blunt language—frequent "shut up," "this is bullshit," "fucking hates her"—and delights in lampooning both the high and the mighty of media, politics, and pop culture.
You’ll come away with a clear sense of Michelle Obama’s current cultural moment (as viewed skeptically), sharp but darkly comedic takes on celebrity foibles, and a vivid picture of the pop culture landscape’s churn. Listener participation is encouraged, and Maureen positions herself and her audience as essential counter-programming to mainstream coverage—bracing, unfiltered, and always with “the nerve.”
