Hot topic. Hello and welcome to the Neuro Spicy News Hot Topic.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
I forgot to get a song again. I did it.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Here Comes the Sun. I always go back to the Beatles.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
We all live in a Hot Topic. Time to live Hot Topic Time to. Yeah, I don't know. Sorry, my brain's just not worked this past week.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
It is a new year, a new Hot Topic. And we are as neurodivergent as we ever are.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
New year, same old me.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Yeah, New year, same brain.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Literally, as soon as you started I just went, oh crap. I knew I'd forgotten to do something.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
That's right. I've forgotten to do a lot of things. That's just one of the things. My bit's easy. Yeah. So Tom Holland is neurodivergent, which I love.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Spider Man.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Oh, we didn't practice that either.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Just throw that in. Why not?
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Anyone listening is like, these guys are Unhinged. And the answer to that is yes. Yes, we are.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
We're not unmedicated. It's just not kicked in.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
It's just not enough. I need all the methylphenidate. So obviously this, this is probably a bit old now, but it's new to us and I certainly never saw it on social media. I don't know why, because Tom Holland is quite, quite a big stuff celebrity being Spider man.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Just a bit. Yeah, he's one of the most in the world.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Big, big fan. Absolutely love Tom Holland. I think he's such a sweet kid. He is so nice. And he's British. He's British.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Bro Britannia.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
I, I love how so many Marvel superheroes are British. Yeah, I just think it's like, just not even Marvel superheroes. DC superheroes. We had Superman, we've had Batman.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah, we have, actually.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Yeah. You had to think about that, didn't you?
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah, no, yeah. Christian Bale.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Christian. A lot of people forget his English.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Like, he's.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
What, he's literally. No, no, he's Welsh. How dare you say British? You said English.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
But I'll change it in the end. No one will, no one will ever know.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Every five min. That. Oh, yeah. So I, I, how I view this is that, you know, decent British people are superheroes, but also because, like, there was a time where we were just villains in Hollywood. Just the entire Death Star was just made of English people.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Going, oh, jolly good show. Let's, let's kill all those wookies.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
And I loved how all the rebels were cockneys. It's like they were allowed to be English but they had to be working class to be a rebel.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
I'm a rebel. I'm a rebel.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Oh, rebel.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Anyway, Tom Holland's neurodivergent and so are we. So tell me the story of Tom Holland's neurodivergence.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yes. So the Spider man star, recently for this article. Not recently for us, because TISM detailed how his diagnosis with dyslexia and ADHD can sometimes inhibit his craft and how he overcomes it. Is what the article says. He says, I have ADHD and I'm dyslexic. I find sometimes when someone gives me a blank canvas that it can be slightly intimidating. Sometimes you are met with those challenges when developing a character. But in order to play himself in any given part, he pursues invoking his inner child any way that you can as a young person or as an adult. Tom Holland said, interact with something that forces you to be creative and forces you to Think outside the box and make changes. I think the more that we do that stuff, the better.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Brilliant. I love. I. I love Tom. And even more now. He's just basically embracing his inner child, which is the thing that we always say sets you free from that neurodivergent prison of hatred. It can just set you free of just loving yourself, true, genuine person that you are. Because we are all just big kids. We don't want people to treat us like that. That's infantilizing us, and that's not okay. But we do need to treat ourselves like that to be happy for ourselves, which is why I'm surrounded by pop characters and cuddly toys, because it makes me happy and I'm not ashamed of it.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
And another thing as well I think about is what a perfect person to play Peter Parker, a neurodivergent icon.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Absolutely. Absolutely. They go neurodivergent, people playing neurodivergent characters. The thing is, is that it has always been happening. We just didn't realize that those people were neurodivergent.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
And when you think about Tom Holland's performance as Peter Parker, he plays it so authentically. Like, I have been a reader of comic books on and off for the majority of my life. Spider man, like the Sam Raimi Spider man, we're talking like Toby Maguire ones, were the ones that really got me invested sort of in the character. But what a lot of the films sort of don't touch on which the Tom Holland ones do is Spider Man's a kid. He's like 16, 17. When he starts being Spider Man 100%.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
He's literally just a kid. And he's not just a kid. He's like a really immature kid.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
And he grows his maturity as he grows his powers.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah. And he takes on that the. The, you know, the Uncle Ben line. With great power comes great responsibility. That is a bit of a. Sort of a neurodivergent mantra. Right. Because what he sort of achieves as a character, how he overcomes the death of his uncle. And even deeper, if you go into the comics, like, he has love interests that pass away as well at the hands of villains, and he still never. He does that thing that Batman does, he never gives in to truly, like, crossing over the line and killing somebody. And I know people that are listening to comic books goes up, but he does in this issue, and he does in this one. But that's the. I'm talking, like, the original sort of timeline of Peter Parker, but even the sort of character that he plays in the Marvel movies. There is this sort of wonderful naivety that comes in his performance around a character that is still also so incredibly intelligent. Like, he, mentally, on an intellectual level, goes bar for bar with Tony Stark, who's, like one of the most intelligent people on the planet as a kid. These are highly intelligent. But then how he performs the sort of love relationship that he has with Zendaya's MJ character is beautifully neurodivergent.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Oh, yeah, she is definitely neurodivergent, coded as a character. Like, she's just. She's so dark and. And kooky. That's the way I was looking for. But I. I do find this a lot with. With so many characters. And another one that I would say is. Is just like, so neurodivergent is. Is Wednesday, you know, from the Addams Family, Wednesday. I mean, I'm. I liked the first season. Didn't really like the second season.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah, I was the same. I didn't. I didn't connect.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Yeah, it wasn't that great. But I love. I love the characters in it and, and her blonde friend being super ADHD and her being super distinct, and it's just like this, like, yin and yang of neurodivergence. And I'm like, I swear my entire brain is Wednesday one moment and her friend the next. It's just all over the place.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
But, yeah, it's. It's wonderful to see, like, such positivity of these celebrities coming out in a positive way. I know that we've done it before, and I know we've talked about it before, but I think Tom Holland is probably one of the biggest ones, certainly from 2025. And I like it because our very small platform can inspire and help people. But I think when somebody like Tom Holland, who was going to be an icon anyway just because he's played Spider man, it's. It's gonna. It's gonna give people that. That extra lift. Because I don't. I mean, let's. Let's read more of the article because we've done this before. We're like, oh, it's great. And then I've. We've hit it.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
We scroll.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Scroll down. I've gone, oh. So let's. Let's carry on a bit before I jump the gun.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah, sure. So he discusses being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of seven. He said it isn't just really my spelling. It was a big hurdle to overcome. I worked really hard at school and still didn't do particularly well, my parents said as long as you try your best. He then discusses somebody, somebody asked him in this sort of media circle that he was doing if you could share any advice to fans struggling with similar endeavors in their neurotype. And he responded with, it's about taking your time, giving yourself the appropriate amount of time to do things you need to do. The better prepared you are for anything, the more you'll be able to do and accomplish things that are fantastic. Now if I was a parent of a young child now this is somebody that I would, you know, I would want them to be interested in Spider man if they were a neurodivergent kid, as so many people are. But also this is a great role model, Great, great role model. And I don't seen as well. Tom Holland has been very open with the fact that he struggled with drinking. He's been very open about the fact that when he was doing media circuits as Spider man and his fame skyrocketed in his teens that he leaned on alcohol as a way to cope. And he has now gone sober and he is sober, but he's also used his money in philanthropy to create a non alcoholic drink brand. So he makes non alcoholic gin and non alcoholic beer and apparently it's really nice and delicious. And he was like, I want to make sure that people can still go out, go out for a drink and ask for a non alcoholic drink and not feel self conscious. Because I feel self conscious when I say no to alcohol and I have to because it's good for me.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Just a wonderful dude. Like I said at the beginning, I mean I, I think he is a fantastic kid and I, I just, yeah, that's, I haven't really got anything else to say. I mean, I've got no notes, which is weird. No notes. Tom Holland, you are my neurodivergent person of the week. You are absolutely fantastic. What a wonderful, wonderful person. And great, great advice, you know, and that sort of advice is, it's like, it's positive but it's also understanding, you know, how being neurodivergent can inhibit you on a day to day basis. So it is, it is something we struggle with. But then he's proven with what he's done with his life that no, not that he can, he can overcome being neurodivergent. I, I don't like that idea. I mean that's not what this is saying. But a lot of people use that. It's like, oh, he's neurodivergent. But it's like, well, he's neurodivergent and he's achieved all these amazing things, become one of the most famous people in the world. And it. And he's understanding the positive sides of his neurodivergence and then explaining how he got over the negative sides of it. And I just. I think that that's what we need. We need that balance all the time.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
And he's also gonna be in two of my most, like, you know, I make a list of movies that I look forward to each year, and he's probably in two of the top three in that. He's in, obviously, the new Spider man film, which comes out in the summer, and then two weeks later, he's in the Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's new film.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
That looks so good.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Oh, looks incredible.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
We should hang out for that. We should meet up.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
I desperately want to go and see in IMAX as well.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
So I'll come to you because I like Liverpool more than anyone likes London. So it'll be another excuse for me to come up and definitely do do some more Beatles things.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah, for sure. Now there's the other one. I'll take you to the Cavern Club this time.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Yeah. I like the fact that we're just organizing our plans while doing the podcast and now everyone knows what we do. We hang out and do Beatles stuff.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah. Quite more than people would think. But yeah, no, it's. It's wonderful to. To know that, like, one of the most famous people in the world is one of us. And he's kind of like, yeah, and look at what I've done. I love that. I really love that. And I hope that 2026 brings more people out of the woodwork that are awesome and cool and have the tism. Want to talk about it in a positive way. Not too positive. Yeah.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Well, this has been a short hot topic. Sorry to everyone who wants to hear more of my sultry, sultry, sultry, sultry tones. Think that might be a word. But that's why we Rat of spoons. It's. It's been a. It's been a long one. And we are recording this at the end of 2025 and it kind of.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Feels when those ghost years are like the ghost days. Christmas, New Year, sort of like, what day is it? What time is it? So.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
So my. My head is literally just a fog. And I know that Scotty's is the same.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Oh, God. Yeah.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
We love you. We wish you all the best for the new year. And hopefully the next episode we will have slightly clearer minds, but we're going to call it a day now. And hooray for Spider Man.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Spider Man. Spider Man. And just about as well. Before we go, there may not be an episode next week because. Oh, yeah, brains don't work. We might need a week off.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Yes. No, we are. We are having a week off. I forgot about that.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
Yeah, I just thought I'd throw it in at the end because I also forgot about it.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
Everyone listening is like, this is the most real they've ever been.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)
No work you.
Host 1 (Possibly named Scotty)
We are so tired.
Host 2 (Possibly named Tom or Scotty's co-host)

Hosts: Jordan James (“The Autistic Photographer”) and Simon Scott
Date: January 2, 2026
This “Hot Topic” episode dives into the significance of Tom Holland's public acknowledgment as a neurodivergent individual, exploring how his openness regarding ADHD and dyslexia is a win for representation. Jordan and Simon discuss why Holland's journey matters to the neurodiverse community, reflect on neurodivergent-coded characters in pop culture, and examine what authentic representation looks like both onscreen and off. With personal anecdotes, playful banter, and candid reflections, the hosts encourage listeners to embrace their neurodivergence with pride.
True to the show’s candid, humorous, warmly self-aware tone, Jordan and Simon balance educational insights with personal anecdotes and a bit of neurodivergent chaos. They celebrate authentic visibility, meaningful role models, and the power of self-acceptance. Their chat affirms that prominent figures like Tom Holland help de-stigmatize neurodivergent identities and encourage others to embrace their unique strengths.
Key Takeaway:
Tom Holland's openness offers vital, relatable representation for the neurodivergent community; his achievements and candor show that neurodivergence is not a barrier but an important part of diverse human experience.
