Michael Hosky
Yeah, I mean, it's been, it's been pretty good so far down at SEC media day. I kind of like Oklahoma. Get down there and rolling right out of the gate and then you can just kind of sit back and watch everyone else. So it's been good.
Akron Layman
Sinners got to hit leadoff. I liked it.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, that was good. Let's get, let's dive into Monday morning.
Akron Layman
Yeah, let's dive into a couple of our favorite quotes from the representatives of the OU contingent down there. Let's start with the head football coach. Ted, what really stood out to you? What were the main things that Brent Venables said down in Tampa that really stood out to you?
Michael Hosky
Well, the first thing that stood out to me is that Brent Venables is the oldest coach in the sec. I, you know, it makes sense when you go back and you kind of cycle through a lot of the old guards been hitting the road the last couple of years, but it was, it was kind of a weird reality. Right. I don't know, because he's, he's got such a young energy about him. Like, whenever that question or whatever comment came from the crowd, I was like, is that right? That can't be right.
Akron Layman
Double nickels, he said.
Michael Hosky
You know, he did, you know, he was the oldest coach. No, think about it.
Akron Layman
Yeah, no, because he may be the oldest one, but there's always that discussion which coach would win, like the SEC Royal Rumble, and I feel like Venables is always at the top of the list of people that think would win. So, hey, he may be the oldest, but he still got it, baby.
Michael Hosky
He's still got it.
Akron Layman
Especially when you factor in that tan. That was the number one thing that stood out to me, that man, hey, he's not a golfer, but he's been doing something. He, he is, he's bronzed currently.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, well, you know, he's got to be feeling good after being in that damn neck brace for I don't know how long to start the summer off. That was, that was a pretty tough thing. So I, I, I think the biggest thing for me was just some of the talk about the offense in the run game. Right. We got to run the ball a hell of a lot better than we have the last couple of years. And, you know, when you think about the foundation of the, of the program that he wants to build, that where feels like we're knocking on the door of getting in that, that neighborhood, play great defense, great special teams, and then offensively, you got to be able to run the football. And, you know, that continues to be a talking point and an emphasis from Venables. You know, starting directly at the end of last season, he's been hammering that home.
Akron Layman
I, I, I think that may be what really stood out to me too, too, Ted. And it was kind of a combination of a couple different things he said, right. He, he had the, we've got to run the ball a hell of a lot better than we have the last couple of years. Quote. But you combine that with him saying they think they have nine guys that can play winning football along the offensive line, and then I think it's important to remind people that Brent Venables is not a hyperbolic guy. What he said about the tight end room, that factors into the run game for me, because he said, quote, that room has probably grown as fast as any room has grown since I've been coaching in that amount of time.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
Now that, that's part to do with what the room was a year ago. We all know that.
Michael Hosky
Right?
Akron Layman
But he doesn't just throw things out willy nilly like that. So like, you combine him saying they think they've got nine guys that can play winning ball along the O line and just how the tight end room has grown and you know, he said it over and over again how much better he wants to run the ball. Like all of those quotes combined, I don't know. Just gives me hope that we're going to be able to run the rock a little bit. Ted. I don't know. Just, just that's how it feels.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. And you know when I heard the nine guys on the offensive line and like there's going to be a difference between player one and player nine, Right. But like, if that's true and there's honestly nine guys that they feel like, you know, one guy has to come out, get his ankle re taped and I mean, you can plant these, these different guys in all those different positions. There ain't a lot of people that have nine, right. So if you legit have nine, you're in a great place.
Akron Layman
Maybe there's some people out there that heard that and they're like, no, no, we need 15.
Michael Hosky
Right?
Akron Layman
That is not reality anymore.
Michael Hosky
I.
Akron Layman
It's probably important to remind people on game day in the NFL, you dress seven or eight offensive linemen. That's, that's it. So if you've got nine that you feel like can go out there and play at a high level, that's pretty dang good, man. Especially with where the sport is at. Like, there's not a ton of programs out there that are feeling really good about nine. So we'll see who those other three end up being. I think that's probably the most interesting part because, you know, you've got the five starters and Ozaida, or maybe Ozaida ends up starting you, you never know. And FOJ plays right tackle, but it seems like Harris is going to be the guy at right tackle. But you've got those six, the starters in Ozaida, and then clearly they got three more they feel really good about and hopefully you end up with a couple more than that.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, depth is going to be a factor. I mean, we start the season very difficult, we end the season very difficult, and there's not any breaks in between. You're gonna have to. Depth is gonna play a big factor for everyone. It's. It's going to be a war of attrition to see who can get to December with some version of the football team they played with. To start the year. And if you. If you truly have nine. I'm not saying they don't. I'm just saying, like, we're gonna have to see some growth. The. The six we know of. You mentioned the, the guys we project to start, and then Ozieda feel really good about that six and then you're right who the other three are, that's going to tell a big story about kind of the staying power of our offensive line. I mean, when's the last time we started five guys? Throughout the entire season. I mean, for the. For the vast majority of the snaps, it's been a long time. So, like, we've got that kind of baked in as Oklahoma fans right now. Like, we need. We need ammunition behind, you know, because. Because something's going to pop up here or there. So that made me feel great. You combine that with the tight end room, like you said, and I, I think even the tight end room, we go from not really having anyone that was really equipped to block in line tied in at a high level in the sec to having maybe four guys that you feel comfortable with that maybe in. In an inline position. Blocking may have been better than what we had all around last year. Now what you got from Canik in, you know, the passing game and the behind the line scrimmage stuff is a little bit different story. But like, true tight end, I think we may have four guys that are better than what we had last year.
Akron Layman
I think that's fair. I mean, I think that's fair. Definitely. You probably feel better about three of them.
Michael Hosky
Three for sure.
Akron Layman
So I. Yeah, but all those things that Venables said, it all adds up to big emphasis on the run game and hopefully a much improved run game. And then I. Anything else that Venables said before we move on to what the players said? Anything. I thought the stuff about Trail Harris was interesting. He's really close. I didn't realize it would take that long with the cleanup, but hey, I. As long as he's ready to go and full speed for training camp, the guy is. He's a proven, productive player. So I'm not overly concerned about it. But that was one where you were like, oh, we just started running routes full speed.
Michael Hosky
Okay, well, like, there's two parts of it. Like, number one for me, veteran guy, played a ton of ball. I. There's some guys that you need through the spring and he's, you know, it's a new offense for him, whatever. But wide receiver, I'm not really worried about that part with him like the only thing that is. And there's still plenty of time as long as he's ready for training camp. Like just the chemistry part, right. Just building the chemistry with your quarterback and with the other wide receivers and really dialing in some of those. Those nuanced things, quarterback receiver relationship through the off season when they throw so much. So that's really the only thing there that leaves me with any concern. And it's minimal. I mean, I, frankly, I, I hope Trail Harris has a huge air force, but I mean, I like that it gives some of these younger guys opportunities because I, I want one of our guys that we've recruited and developed to break through for us and, and start to have some. Some real production out there. Because it's been a while since we've had a wide receiver that we've recruited and developed go out and. And be a big performer for us.
Akron Layman
Yeah. Whether it's Elijah Thomas, Manny Choice, like, it'd be. It'd be great to see one of those guys go have a nice. Especially nice start to the season. Right.
Michael Hosky
Even. Even a possibility of a couple of the freshman guys. Brashears and, and petite.
Akron Layman
Yeah. I, I think that the. It Venables did seem to hint. Not come out. Ryan said like he. He seemed to hint that Whit Neubauer is currently the backup quarterback. We'll see how that plays out throughout training camp. I will say there are a lot of Whit Neubauer fans in that building.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
And the, and the big guy can sling it. So we'll. We'll see how that works out for Bo Bentley. I, I don't think that's something that we need to overanalyze. But it was interesting. He was, he did say, like, hey, if we have wit run out there, it's.
Michael Hosky
We.
Akron Layman
We wanted because we got a big lead and John's healthy and like all that he said. But he just. He threw Whit's name out there. And I think some people went, oh, okay. Whitney Bars the backup quarterback.
Michael Hosky
I made it. I know that whenever you have a big young quarterback come in, like there's. You're just gonna pile all the expectations on. It's really what you want. You know, in my mind, like a low pressure developmental year for him to settle in to see how you prepare for games. You know, get some rep, whether it's scout team or whatever it is just slowly progress without having, you know, all of that pressure piled on top of your right out of the gate. I mean, I, I wasn't surprised by it, and frankly, I was kind of happy to hear it. Now, that's always open to change, as we know, training camp, Bentley can show up, and things start to click, and, you know, maybe, you know, maybe he challenges or maybe even surpasses him. We'll just have to see. I was. I wasn't surprised by it, frankly. I. I kind of want it that way currently.
Akron Layman
Yeah, I. I think that's a. That's a completely reasonable position to take right now. But I. Let's move on to what the guys, the players had to say. Let's just pick, like, a favorite quote from each guy. You got to start with Eddie, Pierre, Louis, first of all, just phenomenal fit, suit looked fantastic. I. The glasses were out, dead. We got our wish. But, Eddie, how did we not know Oklahoma was your dream school, man? This is something you got to tell us earlier. Did you. You've been in Norman for a while. This is information we needed to know.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, I mean, that. That was pretty cool. You know, he's just like, well, honestly, it was Oklahoma. You know, I. I thought he was great. You know, the story about how he found out, you know, and then went out, kind of broke down, and whenever he got out to his car to leave, mom was there. That was cool. And, you know, just being able to make the media tour. My favorite part about it is it recycled the video of him running 100 meters back whenever he was in high school.
Akron Layman
Just an unbelievable video.
Michael Hosky
It's so funny, and I. I love, like, the race goes by, and then right before the video cuts out, there's, like, a girl that goes, dang. I was like, yeah, that's right. That's. I think that's how we all feel.
Akron Layman
I. What. One of the things that really stood out to me that EPL said, and it continues to be a theme with Mater and, like, the way that people in that building talk about him. He said, quote, that's someone I want to go play with. That's my guy. That's someone, you know is putting their body on the line. That flipped the switch in my head as well. That made me want to go a lot harder in the stuff I do and try to be leaders, become the dude he wants me to be as well. And it's. It's something that we've touched on, on here, Ted. But, like, Matier came back, maybe he came back too early, right, from the hand surgery, but it did send a message to the rest of the football team that he's willing to put it on the line for his guys. And my hope is. You hear Eddie talk about it, my hope is, like, that instilled some. I don't want to say, like, more toughness, but just like a certain mentality into the rest of the football team. That. That was just kind of my read on that quote. Like, okay, yeah, that it may not have been the best thing a year ago, but hopefully that mentality, that toughness ends up paying dividends this season. Maybe I'm reaching a little bit, but, like, that quote, really, him talking about his quarterback really stood out to me. Yeah.
Michael Hosky
And I was talking about it on the radio show the other day. Like, if you go back to the Texas game, there was a point in that game where Matier's over, like, during a TV timeout, and he's talking to Arbuckle right there kind of on the. On the sideline, and the TV camera zoom in, and his hand is, like, shaking. You remember that?
Akron Layman
Yeah.
Michael Hosky
And it's. It wasn't shaking because he was like, you know, it was like, just naturally shaking because of how much pain he was in. And then asked about it, like, after the game, you know, and he said, the whole season, no, it wasn't a factor. And I. I just. I like the fact. And sometimes it's not always the best thing. Right. To play through pain, you know, either for yourself individually or maybe even for a football team. And I think it was last year for mater to play through that. But when you see a teammate, someone that you've been there with that, like, everyone's got their bumps and bruises, and you see the quarterback going through that and still, like, putting the shoulder down, trying to go get first downs, running through contact, there's no doubt that it's a motivating force and. Motivating factor.
Akron Layman
Yeah. I mean, it. I know that it's just. They're just quotes. They're just words. But, like, that. That stuff matters to me now. What. What stood out to you about what Matir said? Clearly all eyeballs on the starting quarterback for the Sooners there at media days. Did anything he said really stand out to you?
Michael Hosky
You know, I. I think he. He had a lot of good praise for the offensive line and how they've worked. I thought that was good. You know, I thought one of. He was asked about, you know, stats or one of the things he wants to improve on, and he said completion percentage, and I thought that was interesting. I. A completion percentage for me is usually a statistic that doesn't really tell much of a story, honestly. You know, there's. There's incompletions. A guy comes away from a game and he's, you know, whatever, he's 60%. Well, you know, he threw it away three or four times. You know, there was a great throw over the middle that a guy dropped. You know, there was a ball that was batted down at the line of scrimmage. Like, it doesn't say necessarily that you're an inaccurate quarterback, but the way he framed it, I, I like it because I think he's like, I need to be quick. I need to get the ball out. Whenever I see a window and an opportunity, I need to take what's there. And you know, there's going to be times to make the big play and make the big throw, but if we're going to build behind a run game, we need just positive chunks and positive momentum down the field. So I thought that was, that was interesting for him to say that.
Akron Layman
Yeah, that was kind of in conjunction with the. You don't really have time think if someone's open, throw it to them. Quote, which. Spot on, man. Yeah, completely agree. That one made the rounds that I had. That, that one gave me a good laugh.
Michael Hosky
Ted, you know, it's really like how he frames it is perhaps a, A, a massive oversimplification of the process, but it really is true. I mean, I don't know how you feel, but you think between the whistles, like, you know, before the snap and then when the play happens, they're really, you, like, if you're thinking, you're late. Kind of in my mind. Right. It's all like a, like a designed reaction that you, you've, you put yourself in a position to react to a couple of certain scenarios, and when it's there, it's just a natural reaction and it happens. I think that's what he's talking about. You know, it's like if, if you were like thinking through a process and he's in the, in the pocket and he's taking his drop and he's like, is that cover three? Is that corner playing the flat? Like, is, are they disguising on me? You don't have time to sit there and go through the, the process of elimination that that work needs to have already been done. We're in reaction mode now, no doubt about it.
Akron Layman
But I thought, you know, he, he got a bunch of questions about the hand, bunch of questions about throwing motion, and I, I, I thought he handled all that stuff well. But I'm with you. He did show a lot of love to the offensive line and that that's just him passing an intelligence test. Good job, John.
Michael Hosky
That's right.
Akron Layman
Where to go first? Give your big fellas some credit. I. I did think it was. Once again, I mean, it. They're just. They're just quotes. But I did think it was interesting that he said that the offensive line, like, they stay after more than anybody and that they're getting on each other and the standard has been raised like that was. That's encouraging to hear if the quarterback is seeing it and recognizing, like, that offensive line must be doing something right. You know what I mean?
Michael Hosky
Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, I like that you've got Michaela, who's. Who's an older guy, a little more experienced. Like, just the fact that this group has played together, you know, whenever, if you just take five guys that have never played a snap together, and maybe it's a couple young guys, a couple transfer portal guys, and you're going out there and you're staying after. It's like the blind leading the blind. Sometimes it's not a good thing, like, to go out there and just be guessing on what you're working through and not really knowing the drills and the fundamentals and exactly how it's supposed to be done. And we're just out there burning time. To burn time. I feel like this group haven't played together, you know, having some experience there, that it's not just we're spending extra time out there. We're actually getting something accomplished.
Akron Layman
Yeah, that's important. Last but certainly not least, what stood out to you about what Taylor Wine said? I mean, it was. It was hard to pay attention to anything he was saying. I just, I. I couldn't stop staring at that pristine mustache he was going with.
Michael Hosky
Look good, Chris. He says all the right stuff, man. And I don't think it's just, you know, media talk. I. I think he lives it as well. You know, talking about how last year was a breakout and, you know, what does he do this year? It's just like he continues to do his thing and work. And I love, you know, I'm. I'm probably the biggest PJ fan out there. And the fact that he pointed to him as one of the guys that he expects to have a really big year. That. That was good. That felt good to me.
Akron Layman
I think that's the number one thing he said that made people go, okay, we know PJs got all the physical tools, man. He's been really good. We talk about it on. We talked about it on here all last Season, he's been really good playing the run. If he can just bring you a little more as a pass rusher. QB pressure, not even. You don't even necessarily. Doesn't necessarily have to be sacks, but like QB pressures, QB hits collapse in the pocket. With that strength and length, like, he could have a huge impact on this defense. And we all know with our Mason Thomas moving on the NFL like that other defensive end spot, there's a void. We feel great about what Taylor Wine's going to do on one side, but there's a void on that other side that we're expecting PJ and Danny Okoye to fill. And if, if PJ can just become a guy that disrupts the quarterback consistently in obvious passing situations, then that's going to make what we feel like is going to be a very good defense even better. Yeah.
Michael Hosky
And I don't know, I'm interested to get out there for training camp and see how it, how it works at defensive end. Like if, if the side opposite Taylor Wine is some type of rotation between Okoye and pj, that's kind of like almost two polar opposite stylistic players, which may be hell on that side of the offensive line to try and know exactly what you're going to get on a snap by snap basis. Right. PJ's gonna overwhelm you with just raw power and length, and then Okoye is going to come at you with athleticism, aggression, counters. I mean, it's really a pretty good one, two combination.
Akron Layman
I wouldn't mind it. We'll see. We'll see how it plays out throughout training camp and then how it plays out early in the season. But yeah, clearly I, I think Wine saying that stuff about PJ got a
Michael Hosky
lot of people's attention and, you know, one of the factors with pj, again, I. I love the kid. I think he's great because I know what I'm going to get every single game. No matter what, I know what I'm going to get. You know, he had, I don't know exactly what, what procedure he had where he missed spring, but he has battled some lower leg stuff since he got here. Foot, ankle situation. And, you know, hopefully they got that figured out and fixed. And it sounds like it. Whenever you listen to guys like Taylor Wine talk about the, the off season he's had in the summer that he's had. So maybe that, that helps him kind of cut loose a little bit more on, on some of the pass rush stuff.
Akron Layman
Yeah, but it was. I know this. I was glad to hear wine say it. That's it's encouraging. All right, let's break down some of the other best quotes from the first two days of SEC Media days. Ted There was There are a lot of different quotes coming out of the first two days, but we, we hit the OU guys. What. What are some other quotes from other coaches, other players that really stood out to you?
Michael Hosky
I think my favorite quote so far is Josh Hyple deadpanning the. I hope our fans haven't calmed down. I hope the local stores stay stocked up on mustard and golf balls. I thought that was amazing. Like dead ass serious when he said it too.
Akron Layman
See, we have the pleasure of knowing Josh Hyp, and he's actually pretty funny what he wants to be. And that was fantastic delivery. And. But you know, the entire time he was saying it, he was thinking of, oh, I can't wait for Lane to have to react to this like, you know what I mean?
Michael Hosky
Right?
Akron Layman
Yeah.
Michael Hosky
Just lay out a bunch of nuggets that everyone's gonna. Oh, I can't wait to ask Lane what he thinks of that. It was so good. Such a good delivery.
Akron Layman
That was. That was great. And I think Tennessee fans will take him seriously.
Michael Hosky
I know. That's one of the reasons I thought it was so interesting because I. When the head coach. The head coach is basically arming a hundred thousand people by giving the okay for whenever they. They come into the stadium. That's. I thought it was great.
Akron Layman
I saw some people quote, tweet it being like, this is just irresponsible for him to say, to tell people to do this. It's just, hey, man, this is college football, baby.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, I, I agree. I thought it was irresponsible and I loved it. That's it.
Akron Layman
That's what makes it great.
Michael Hosky
It's going to be raining golf balls on the sideline. I. The, the football coaches and the staff are all going to be wearing helmets as well down there. It's going to be hilarious.
Akron Layman
It was. Do you think it was just Hypo's way of distracting the media from having to talk about his quarterback battle between George McIntyre and Faison Brandon. And he answered plenty of questions about that. But there was no doubt that the number one quote coming out of SEC media days from Hypo was what he said about Kiffin coming back to Knoxville as LSU's head coach.
Michael Hosky
Easiest thing in the world. It's like, I don't know, it's a, it's a, a pack of stray dogs. Like, all you gotta do is throw a scrap of meat over there and off they go. You know, he knows the group really well, so I. It just really well done. I loved it.
Akron Layman
Well executed by Josh Hyp. What else I I was, I was really happy to hear Eli Drinkwit say that Ahmad Har, Ahmad Hardy has been medically cleared and is on the road to recovery. Now. He said that. I don't really know what that looks like, what the timetable is, but it does sound like he's bouncing back, well from getting shot in the leg a couple months ago. So the hope is that he's going to come back as the same guy and be, you know, one of, if not the best running back in college football like he was a season ago. But that was. I, I, we could have gotten the update. Like, ah, we don't know. It's not looking so good, but we did say it was, hey, he's, he's on the road to recovery, which I, I took as very positive news for Hardy.
Michael Hosky
Five to eight weeks, I think is, is what they said, right. The thing I took from it, which is, you know, it's interesting. He got shot in the upper leg and they said it hit bone. Well, he only got one bone in the upper leg, that's the femur. So I like, I don't know, like what chipped fragments. Doubt it was a full break of it, but, you know, if that is a significant injury, whatever it, whatever damage it did to the bone. So to hear that he's been cleared to start, you know, get ready to get back to play football, I thought that was big. You know, he's played enough to where he's another one of those guys where, you know, as far as the mental part, the training camp part, the preparation part, not all that concerning. It's just what version of him, whenever he's ready to go, are you going to have. And I don't know, and I will say that I think he's a really good back, but their scheme does a lot of the heavy lifting. As long as it's stylistically who's carrying the ball, understands it and can capitalize on how they block things. Like, I fully expect that Missouri is going to have a really good run game whether he's back or not. Now, I think that he would obviously make it better, but it's still going to be a big chunk of what they do.
Akron Layman
No doubt about it. But encouraging news. I think that's the best way to put it. Encouraging.
Michael Hosky
Yep.
Akron Layman
It could have been a bad update, but this seems like a good update from Eli Drinkowitz on Hardy. So which I want to watch the best college football players play college football. So hopefully Hardy over this, you know, next, let's call it six weeks. Can get right and be ready to go for them week one. Like, that's. That's my hope. But we'll. We'll see.
Michael Hosky
And it's. It's also one of those things where you feel like if you get to where you're good to go there, that it's not like a re. Injury situation. You know what I'm saying? Like. Like a. A ligament repair.
Akron Layman
It's not a hammy.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
It's not like, oh, he tore. Sammy's coming back. It's his bullet fragments in his femur is kind of what you have to. It. That's kind of what you have to assume what went on there. But I. So weird, man.
Michael Hosky
Strange, but hate it for him. Tough, but sounds like he's on a good path.
Akron Layman
Will Stein may have had the quote of the entire thing. I know that there's still two days left, but he. I. I just love when a coach is honest, man. Absolutely love it. Will Stein, Kentucky's new head coach, was asked why he thought he could win big at Kentucky. And my favorite part about it is, like, you can see him processing the question and, like, going, should I say it? And he's like, yep, I'm gonna say it.
Michael Hosky
He says, is there a better way to put this out? Is like, how can I massage this answer a little? Not, screw it. Here's why.
Akron Layman
I think because of me, to be honest, was the quote because of me. And if I'm a Kentucky fan, that's exactly what I want to hear. I want my coach to be confident. And he went on to say, I know what it takes. I know how you have to recruit. I know how you have to develop. I know how you have to prepare. Like, he said all the right things. I think he was saying because of, like, the experience he has and, you know, being at Oregon and all this stuff, like being around an operation that kind of knows what it takes to get to a high, high level. Right. But because of me was just that, like, that was. That was what I want to hear if I'm a fan. It's what I want to hear if I'm a player in that locker room, too. Like, I want my coach to believe in himself and think that he's that dude. Clearly, Will Stein does, which is a good thing, in my opinion.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. And you don't get a whole lot of that from coaches. Now, Signetti, maybe the best example. I win. Google me. But Venables, you know, because I'm good at it. Right. Why he's going to call plays on. On on defense. So, yeah, I, if, if you, like, everyone has a plan on what they're going to do as head coach when they take over a job. Like, you've gotta. You've got to be behind it. You've got to have some real confidence in it and, and know that that's the direction you want to go and believe in it. And if you believe in it, the people behind you will believe in it. If you're like, well, we'll find a way. And, you know, there's some, some we're going to have to learn on the fly or whatever, like, that doesn't give you the resolve. Like, I, I like it. Now, does that mean. I think Kentucky is going to go out when the sec. No, it does not. But I like the direction that, that he is taking the program and the confidence that he's got.
Akron Layman
I. You got to have it. Yeah, you got to have it to, to get that program to a higher level. You got to have a guy that has that type of confidence leading it, in my opinion. And so I, I thought that was great, though, the.
Michael Hosky
You.
Akron Layman
My favorite part about it is, like, right before he decides to say it, like, you could. I wish you had. We had like, his internal monologue of, like, what was going through his head. He's like, I'm going to say it. Should I say, yeah, I'm going to say it. And then, yeah, because of me. It's. Because of me.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. It's like, you know, whenever you got a little kid on the edge of a ski slope or something and not really sure, and then there's like the, the. You just kind of push him over the edge and it's like, ah, here we go. It's like, that's how it went with Pretty funny.
Akron Layman
Kirby Smart always delivers some great quotes at SEC media days. Ted, what. What was like, the top one from Kirby, you heard?
Michael Hosky
Well, I, I thought the most significant was the break it away from the NCAA statement that he made. And I guess, like, it's just interesting for someone to just throw it out there and say it, right? Because there's been a lot of like, well, should we. What if we did? Will they. Won't they? You know, this could be an option down the road. He's like, yeah, I've been thinking about. We should. I've been thinking about that for a while. I guess my only. I. I really don't know. What. What does that mean? Does that mean like, they are starting their own league or does that just mean, like, we're no longer Recognizing the rules and guidelines of the ncaa, we're going to come up with our own rules and guidelines as far as how to conduct our program, what's legal, what's not, what does the calendar look like, what are the restrictions on recruiting? Like, just kind of build that framework for yourselves and then go with it. But I, I guess that's my only thing is I don't know what exactly that even means.
Akron Layman
Me neither, really. Because I don't think Greg Sankey or Kirby Smart, like, I, I don't think they want the group of five or whatever it's called now to disappear. I don't. You know what I mean?
Michael Hosky
Right.
Akron Layman
But I think, and he said it like, I, I think the frustration lies where they, they just don't feel like they have the power to make decisions and don't have the control. They feel like they should as the sec. Like, I, I feel like Kirby Smart probably thinks that the Big Ten in the SEC should almost be able to design the framework of the sport.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
And they're not able to. And I think that's frustrating to him. But I, that was when, when Sankey addressed it in his opening remarks. It was one of those things where he was on stage with the opportunity to say, we don't want to break away on our own. We want to work together. We want to make this all work. And he went the complete opposite way, was like, yeah, that's a possibility. And it was one of those where you're like, oh, yeah, once again, I'm not entirely sure what it means.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
But I think they're sick and tired of and I, I think the vast majority of college football fans are as well. Like not, not everyone's playing by the same rules. Different states have different rules. Like, it's just, it's become a little confusing and tiring and I just think that if they can establish rules that everyone has to follow, that would be great. I, I, I think that's what Kirby Smart is saying. I don't necessarily think he wants to say, oh no, we want to go start our own 16 team league and have like our own super bowl and stuff. Even though people would watch. I mean, there's no doubt about it.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
But I, I, I, I don't think that's what he means. Maybe that is what he means, but I just think he's kind of fed up with, they're not really being any concrete rules in college football.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. And it's like you got the NCAA framework and some people are following it, some people aren't it's like the tampering thing. I mean, does anyone think that schools aren't tampering? No, everyone knows they are, but there's been no follow through. There's been like, no, like true investigations. Like, so it's like, listen, we're not. If you don't tamper, you fall behind everyone else. It's, it's not the way things should be. Like, there should be a, a strong framework with real repercussions that if you go outside that quickly and harshly, it's dealt with or else it's the Wild west and no one respects the rules. And, you know, you've got this, this weird framework that is supposed to be holding it up, but it's really a house of cards. So, I mean, I understand the frustration for sure.
Akron Layman
Yeah, we'll see what ends up happening with all the legislation that's trying to get passed. I've lost track of all the different bills and all that. It just let me know when something's in place. That's, that's my, that, that's just where I'm at with it.
Michael Hosky
Ted, I, I agree and I've always, I've always thought that the real policing needs to come from the, at the conference level. It's just, it's too much at the NCAA level because the same body is probably spending the same amount of time going through. I mean, there's 130some Division 1 schools and if you're mired in the mud over, you know, what the recruitment of a player at Toledo went looked like with the same way that you are with all the big boys, where there's huge money being passed, just they're bogged down by all of the teams. It should be done at the conference level where they can actually keep a real close eye trained on their schools to make sure that everything's on the up and up. So, I don't know.
Akron Layman
Last, last thing that stood out to me is a quote from Alex Gollish, Auburn's new head coach. And it's a fair question, basically, like, hey, what, what are your goals for year one? It's a very fair question to ask a new coach and, but I thought his answer was really interesting. Here's what he said. Quote, I don't really have any goals other than laying a foundation for what Auburn football is going to be for years to come. Physical and mental toughness, the ability to be the most violent team on the field every Saturday. I, I thought that was kind of an awesome quote.
Michael Hosky
Yep.
Akron Layman
Like, hey, if we are physically and mentally tough and violent. Everything will take care of itself. He didn't throw out there, oh, I want to win 10 games. I want to win the eight games. Like he was just like, you know what? I want this program and this team, I want it to look the way I want it to look basically. And I just thought that I, I thought that was a great perspective to have. It's maybe not what Auburn fans want to hear it. It's certainly what I would want to hear if I was an Auburn fan. But I'm sure some of their fan base wanted to hear, oh, we're going to win double digigit games, here we come. We're, we're going to be back, baby. But I, it felt like a very process over results oriented quote from Golish.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, Auburn is a fascinating situation. You go back a year ago, obviously chaotic season, quarterback issues, head coach getting bounced. But I think they were 5 and 7. But they only lost one game in this you see by double digits and that was Georgia, which they were leading early. Everything else, touchdown game, one score game.
Akron Layman
That defense was legit.
Michael Hosky
Defense was legit. They were, they battled a bunch of teams really, really close. So this isn't a Arkansas or a Kentucky. There are players at Auburn A, there's some dudes at Auburn. So I'm curious to see like maybe what they, what they can become and maybe how quickly he brought several players with him from South Florida that know his system, know his scheme and, and how they want to be able to, to execute it. But I'm really starting to like Alex Golish. I tell everyone Cole Kublick has been doing this series of interviews with some SEC head coaches and I listened to the one with Alex go and it tell starts at the very beginning, you know, and kind of tells his entire story of how he got to where he is now. It's a fascinating road. I mean he's been around a bunch of really, really good football coaches. He started on the defensive side, was on the defensive side for a long time. But to, to get where he is now as the head coach at Auburn, I, I think he's one of those guys that, that has it. He's going to do some good things.
Akron Layman
Can I give you a stat that when I saw I was like, that can't be right because I was looking at the goish quote and I was like, okay, he doesn't want to, you know, but you don't want to throw out. Oh, we're going to, we're going to go play for An SEC championship. I get, I get that year. Wanted a new place, but I was like, okay. I, I mean Auburn's been, I mean it's a solid program. They've been pretty good. They haven't won seven games since 2019.
Guest or Co-host (unnamed)
Wow.
Akron Layman
Six wins or five wins in every season since 2019. I think they won nine games in 2019. I just, I, I know we weren't, we've only been in the SEC a couple years now, but I was just like, is that right? Maybe that's why he's saying process over results quotes. Because they haven't won more than six
Michael Hosky
games since 2019 and I'd be interested to go back. It's probably a lot like that. Would we play Nebraska? Was that 23? When we play 22 and 23?
Akron Layman
Yeah.
Michael Hosky
Is that right?
Akron Layman
Yeah. Venables first year right in Lincoln up
Michael Hosky
to that point, like whenever, like if you go back and look at Nebraska, they had lost like, I don't know, some incredible number of one score games. It was like 20 in a row or something. Ridiculous. I wonder if it's kind of the same with Auburn. If they've just whatever it is mindset. There's like a mental block there that they are just can't get over the hump. But the vast majority of their losses are one score games late.
Akron Layman
I, I'm very, very interested in what Auburn looks like in year one, especially because they were able to retain Durkin as the defensive coordinator. I think that defense is going to be.
Michael Hosky
They were good last year.
Akron Layman
I think they're going to be good again.
Michael Hosky
Yep.
Akron Layman
So if Golish can get that offense figured out, you bring your quarterback from South Florida. He's a dual threat guy. I know Golish wants to run the absolute heck out of the ball. So it just. Auburn feels like one of those teams where, I mean, they're gonna beat some people that maybe you don't expect them to beat. I kind of feel that way about Kentucky after the Will style quote too. So I. It's just gonna be a really fun year. It's gonna be a really fun year of SEC football. That's how it feels to me.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, I feel, I feel the same way about pretty much any of the schools that are like, you got Georgia, you got Texas, that's. That's most people's favorites to win it. And then kind of the, the rest of the top half of the conference, the, the remaining eight, really, it can fall any way with those. And then the lower teams, like whether it's Mississippi State, Kentucky, South Carolina for sure. I feel like all of those teams are going to beat someone that they're not supposed to. You know, I feel like everyone's kind of got that ability on just a random weekend where you feel like it's a check mark win for, you know, a top two or three school going on the road to a Kentucky or South Carolina or wherever else that you run into a bus hole.
Akron Layman
Starting to sound like a bit of a mini NFL, Ted.
Michael Hosky
Yep, yep.
Akron Layman
Try a lot of talented players, a lot of good coaches. No gimmes. It doesn't feel like there's a single gimme anymore, does it?
Michael Hosky
Nope, there's not.
Akron Layman
Vanderbilt's good.
Michael Hosky
Well, Vanderbilt's good. I mean South Carolina went to Texas A and M last year and had them whipped.
Akron Layman
Do you see Bieber that the guy was like, hey, can we talk about the A and M gave last year? He's like, can we not? It's pretty good.
Michael Hosky
Mississippi State had Texas beat yeah, right. Kentucky a couple years ago beat Ole Miss early in the season. Kind of like everyone's got that ability. Everyone's got that ability to make something happen.
Akron Layman
Let's finish up with our winners and losers of the week.

Michael Hosky
British open.
Akron Layman
You mean the Open championship?
Michael Hosky
That. That may be what they call it and about what the snooty golf fans call it, but it's the British Open. To me, it always will be. I love the finish on Sunday. I thought it was great. There was drama throughout the week or throughout the weekend. Obviously the DeChambeau situation. I thought like the final. The back nine on Sunday was great. It. The course was. Got to where it was playing really difficult on Sunday. And my dude, Ryan Fox, that's the kind of guy I want to play with. I mean, about three seconds behind the ball and he's sending it.
Akron Layman
Not a lot of thought.
Michael Hosky
No, dude, it was like, there's no, like, you take maybe one extreme is Jordan Spieth and the other extreme is Ryan Fox. But like a five or was a five or six footer to win the. The British Open. Everyone's there and like, no one even has a chance to get their cell phone up to record it. He just takes a look, walks up there. Boom. Like, most of the time, like, the guys are gonna walk around, build some drama, you know, and then go up there and sink the putt. He's like, nope. One little peek to the side. Walk up there, hit it. Off he goes. I thought that was awesome.
Akron Layman
It was.
Michael Hosky
And no one had birded that hole almost the whole day.
Akron Layman
I. It was like, it was. It was so clutch, dude. But it happened so quickly, you didn't really have time to process it. It felt like the crowd was still clapping for the tap in. That happened before. But he's like, okay, here we go. He was. You could see it, like, as the other putt is going, like he's walking to his ball getting ready. He's like, I need to putt this. Like, now I need to put it.
Michael Hosky
There was kind of like indecision from, Was it Burns that he was playing with?
Akron Layman
Yeah. And some people are like, is he distracting Sam Burns here? And one of the rules, like, hey, if, if you can't see their eyes, they can't see you. That's like a golf thing on the green that I was told, you know, a couple years ago. It's like, hey, as long as you can't see their eyes, they can't see you. You're not bothering him. And I, I have a feeling that R. Fox knows what he's doing in some of those situations. But yeah, you could tell he wanted to get to that ball. He wanted to get to that marker, put his ball down and put that thing. Yeah.
Michael Hosky
And Sam Burns is like, I mean, do I mark this or do I finish? Because he's got a chance to win the tournament right here. I, I don't want to be the guy that's tapping in a three footer after he's just won the tournament. So he's like, do I put it? And it's like, you better put it down and put it because there's, he's about to be sending another one right at you. So I, I don't know. I thought it was great. I love the way he played, was, was awesome. What did you think of the DeChambeau penalty situation?
Akron Layman
I, I, I didn't understand why it was a penalty. I thought it was a bit of a reach. I thought, I, I listen, I've been in some tall grass on the golf course. I take big steps like that in the tall grass because, like, you don't want to drag your feet through the grass. It's like, I, I did think his Instagram post of him like hovering above the grass and all that, that was pretty good.
Michael Hosky
I saw one where it was the AI and he's got a weed eater. Did you see that?
Akron Layman
I just thought it was, it kind of felt like a reputation thing to me, which I like if Rory McElroy would have did it. I don't think Rory McElroy gets a two shot penalty.
Michael Hosky
There, there's, there's clips of Rory doing the same thing, you know what I'm saying?
Akron Layman
Like, I, it, it felt unnecessary to penalize him for it. You know, I could be wrong. I'm not a, and the golf purists out there could be saying, hey, you're an idiot, and I'm fine with that. But it. Nothing he did looked unnatural to me.
Michael Hosky
Right.
Akron Layman
Look at your ball, walk around a little bit, maybe look at it again, and then go and hit the ball.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
And it just. It put this weird kind of cloud over the tournament that I didn't like.
Michael Hosky
I agree. And I. Whatever there. I mean, the place was trampled with everyone over there looking for his ball before he even showed up. So, like, what. Whatever it is, fine. But I thought it was pretty poor form for kind of how Rory approached it. You know what I'm saying? I. I mean, the. The arrogance, their. And, like, to all to say that you thought he did it on purpose, and then also in the same. In the same quote or in the same session, say that you're not fond of the guy. Kind of makes it sound like you think it's a penalty because you're not fond of the guy. If it's one of your buddies that you are really close with or you do really, like, would you have felt the same way? Probably not. So I just. I didn't. I didn't like that part of it at all.
Akron Layman
Yeah, it. It felt. I don't know. And there's. There's nothing wrong with a little animosity in golf. I actually think that's good for the sport.
Michael Hosky
Agree.
Akron Layman
But it's one of those. It's like a. It's a. It's like a rules situation. It's not like, oh, I don't like that guy. Yeah, good. Give him the penalty. I don't know. I just. I just kept going back to, like, hey, if it would have been Tommy Fleetwood, the hometown hero, who I. Dude, I really wanted him to win. He was not far off. I think he finished, what, third or fourth? Something like that. But there's no way Tommy Fleetwood's getting that penalty. No way. And that's where. If it's not a penalty for one guy, it shouldn't be a penalty for the other. I didn't think anything about. It was, like, unnatural. Found his balls. He's walking in tall grass, just he hits the ball out. It just. They turned something that felt like it should have been nothing into a huge deal.
Michael Hosky
Right. And then I. I also thought maybe it was Scheffler that made this comment. He's like, listen, you. There's guys that are playing early in the morning that are teeing off, that don't have 15 cameras on them at every moment while they're on the course. And like this. The. The scrutiny for a player like that that's off playing compared to a guy like DeChambeau who's in the hunt and has like all these different cameras on him at different angles are kind of telling like a different story. And I don't know, I guess it's almost to say, like, there's a lot of stuff that's kind of gray area that's happening out there, but the guys that are getting all the TV cameras are getting maybe an unfair view of it. I, you know, I don't know it, but kind of like you, I like the drama.
Akron Layman
Yeah. Scotty got some interesting relief. So it's.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, what the hell?
Akron Layman
I mean, it's just dechambo's getting a two stroke penalty for walking in the tall grass. Meanwhile, Scheffler's getting that relief. You're just like, okay, all right, dude,
Michael Hosky
I don't, like, listen, and I'm not
Akron Layman
like a big Bryson fan. Like, that's, I wouldn't consider myself a DeChambeau guy, but it's just like, I, I just think you need a little common sense in golf. You know what I'm saying?
Michael Hosky
It, I think it's like the overwhelming frustration with some of the rules, right? Like your ball moves when you address it, you know, and it kind of turns in the, in the high grass or something. Like you got to take a penalty like some of these things, and then you freaking hook the ball to hell and gone into I don't know what type of vegetation that was. That ball's dead. D E, D dead. And he gets to drop and like in a perfect area and make birdie. What are we doing? I, I, it's like the frustration between the wide gap between. Did he step on some grass behind his ball or did he not? Compared to, oh, if you hook it into that stuff, you get to drop right here.
Akron Layman
It's weird, strange, but congrats to Ryan Fox.
Michael Hosky
Good, good tournament.
Akron Layman
I would say. Do not try that swing. No.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
A lot of people, guy wins a major, you maybe try some of the things they do. Do not try that swing.
Michael Hosky
No, I mean, his swing and how fast he plays. He plays like a ringer in a scramble more than he does a professional. You know what I'm saying?
Akron Layman
Yeah. Dude, he hit some unbelievable shots on that back. Not just.
Michael Hosky
I thought the drive on 18 was maybe. I, I mean, there's a ton of great shots in there, but that as hard as that fairway was to hit and as hard as that hole was playing, just to step up there with the tournament on the line, free swing and blast it right down the pipe. That was awesome.
Akron Layman
I'm gonna start turning that left foot out a little more like him. Just see how it goes. Just give it a whirl. Just see how it goes. You know, can't hit it any worse than I already do. You know what I'm saying? So let's give it a whirl. Just see how it goes.
Michael Hosky

Michael Hosky
Argentina World Cup Final. I. It was a slow game, and then they got the red card and had to play with 10. It was like, you know, can we last until the final whistle to try and get this thing to. To penalty kicks? But, like, as the clock was ticking down, the drama ramped up and they had some great opportunities late to try and tie that thing up. But I thought, I thought it was a great final. I was really entertained by it. It was, like I said, a little slow early, but I mean, I think that was part of the drama. Playing with 10, right, and just trying to hold them off as long as possible. But I think the best team won. Spain's really good 100.
Akron Layman
Agree. I. Especially early. You just saw how Spain controlled the ball and you're like, oh, precise. Yeah, they're. They. They looked better throughout the whole. The entire game. Now, once they scored an extra time. Yes, extra time. Different than stoppage time, Ted. Different. We know the difference. Okay, people, we know the difference. But once they scored an extra time, it kind of ramped up the sense of urgency and like the risk taking for Argentina because it kind of felt throughout the entire game, they were just. Their mentality was like, let's get this to penalty kicks, which I don't love. But there was some drama late in that game with some balls at Argentina put into the box. They were close, man. I just, I just. I. I think a lot of people wanted to see Messi win it again. And I. But I'm never, I'm never going to complain about the best team in the world winning the competition that is supposed to determine the best team in the world. And it was pretty clear that Spain was better than Argentina.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, I totally agree. Lot of whistles.
Akron Layman
Lot of whistles.
Michael Hosky
A lot of whistles.
Akron Layman
Did you love that we got the 10 on 11, even though what Was that guy from Argentina doing, just running full speed and blasted that dude. That was crazy.
Michael Hosky
I guess, like, I thought that was interesting. And it's a different sport and I don't know the rule set and how it's officiated, but in my mind, you got a loose ball and you got two guys sprint, sprinting full speed at it. Some type of collision's imminent here. And if both guys have an honest 50, 50 opportunity at the ball, in my mind, like, that's not, I don't know how you can call a foul one way or the other. Does that make sense?
Akron Layman
I'm with you. It's like, it's like a wide receiver and a defensive back battling for a ball. That's like a 50, 50 ball. Like, hey, there's going to be some contact here. But he did, I do think the fact that the guy from Spade just went flying into the air, like, twisting, I think that played a factor in the second yellow being given.
Michael Hosky
It was, yeah, it was, it was a, it was a spectacle. Okay. And I think it was legit. You know, a lot of the times out there, there's these guys flopping and flailing all over the place when nobody touches them. But I thought that one was pretty much legit. I don't know. It was just, it was. How about the fight afterwards? Yeah, a little bit out there. I like it.
Akron Layman
Mix it up. Do you see the ratings for the final?
Michael Hosky
No.
Akron Layman
60 million in the U.S. that's pretty good. A big chunk on Fox. They combined Fox and telemundo like over 60 million.
Michael Hosky
Pretty good.
Akron Layman
People were watching people be watching soccer.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. And I, you know, it was, it was interesting. Just kind of the, the lead up to the game, you know, the story with Messi, I thought was pretty compelling. The young players on Spain, I thought was, was kind of a cool story. They're set up for, you know, a couple of teenagers out there. For them, the. How about the performance by the Argentina goalie? I mean, all over the place.
Akron Layman
That was, there was a lot to, there was a lot to like in that final. I, I. And overall, it felt just like the expanded field for the World Cup. It just felt like a massive success.
Michael Hosky
Yep.
Akron Layman
And it felt like the way that they organized this thing in North America with felt when all that stuff got announced, I was like, man, that feels like a lot of moving parts. But as far as I can tell, it went about as well as it could have. I know that maybe it was tough getting in and out of some of the stadiums at times that Just, I. That happens. And I think that's more on FIFA than the stadiums, in my opinion, because the game we went to in Houston, it was not your typical getting into an NFL stadium operation. But overall, it. Yeah, it feels like we're gonna host a couple more World Cups in our lifetime, Ted, with how well this thing went in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. And it's cool to be able to spread it across all North America like that. And I understand it. It's like, when you've got a world event like that, the multiple layers of security are ultimately worth it, you know, if something were to ever happen at one of those events, like, how long does that affect it in the future, you know, for people attending? So I think it's worth a little bit of the extra pain to make sure nothing happens there. And, like, talk about a logistical nightmare, like organizing a tournament that's on a gigantic continent like that. And everything that. That comes with it, the ticketing, security and all that stuff, I thought it was. Was pulled off really well. I guess my main question about the final is, how in the hell does Madonna get.
Akron Layman
Yeah, I was shocked. I know. I was like, wait, is that Madonna?
Michael Hosky
There's. I. You cannot get me to believe that the group of people that were organizing the halftime show, someone said, what about Madonna? And everyone's like, yes, that's who we need. There's no way that's possible. So how does she. How does she work her way into the halftime show?
Akron Layman
I have no idea. Because I. I was, you know, I was trying to get some stuff done at halftime, and I hear music. I was like, wait, what? I turned. It got my attention real quick. I was like, madonna's performing the halftime show. This feels like. Not 2026. No offensive Madonna, she looks great. But it was one of those things. It was like. It felt like there were other options, you know?
Michael Hosky
Yes. I mean, I don't. I was surprised by that, but that's really. It. Everything else I thought was fantastic. And do you think that this changes any of the turf versus grass? I mean, I know the NFL's ramped up the. The conversation with the NFLPA.
Akron Layman
Hashtag worth the cost or whatever it is.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
The. The reason, from what I understand, the reason that a lot of NFL owners prefer the turf is because of the other events you can have at the stadium.
Michael Hosky
That's right.
Akron Layman
They are not going to give up that money, boys. Get used to the turf. It ain't going anywhere. I. I understand it, but it's. It's the Concerts. It's the events. Like, they're not going to give up that stadium revenue. It. They're. There's a lot of money made in those events at those stadiums. And there's. They're. They're not going to give it up, man. They're just not.
Michael Hosky
No, I. And it's unfortunate. I. Degrass. It looks so much better. It looks great to play on. It's so much better to play on. But that's what happens when they build these stadiums the way they do. Like, in order to make it work with the different municipalities, like, you gotta. It's gotta be open to all kinds of events. And, you know, I. I don't think Real Madrid has a monster truck rally on their field, you know, between soccer games. Like, you do. Like, it's just a totally different animal, unfortunately.
Akron Layman
Correct, Correct. But that they don't have. Dude, perfect. Coming in, driving, playing go kart soccer, which, by the way, took my kids to. Dude, perfect. I didn't really know what to expect. I'd seen some of their trick shots. They were great. Very entertaining. Kids loved it. Kids were going wild. By the end of it, all the kids we were with had their shirts off. Twirling them above their heads for some reason. Yeah, it was great. They did a great job. Very entertaining. Enjoyed it. But. Yes, that's. They can't drive the go karts on the natural grass, Ted. And I know that. I'm talking about a basketball arena, but it's the same thing, you know, it's the. It's the same concept. You host all these other events to make more money with the stadium.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. And I know, like, I get it. There's, you know, like the arenas or stadiums where they can take the grass out and grow it outside and then put it back in. It's. I'm down for that, too. And like the. I think it's Real Madrid where theirs goes down. Have you seen that? Yeah. Freaking sick machinery. Like, it's. You could do it, but it cost an insane amount of money. And, you know, I. I don't know that you're just ever going to see it, but I don't know. It's an interesting conversation.
Akron Layman
If you don't want to play on turf, then boycott, boys. See how that goes. Good luck.
Michael Hosky
Or just threaten to boycott until the last moment. But don't take football away from us, guys.
Akron Layman

But I feel like every man wants people to think that they're tough, right? That's fair.
Michael Hosky
Sure.
Akron Layman
Well, Joshua Kuroda, grower, plays for the. Where do they play now? Where are the Athletics player? They in Sacramento until they go to Vegas. Is that right?
Michael Hosky
It's somewhere that looks like a fair.
Akron Layman
Whenever they play, they're not in Oakland. I think it's Sacramento. Big baseball guys, clearly. But this man fouls a pitch off in the fifth inning. First pitch of the at bat.
Michael Hosky
Okay.
Akron Layman
Bounces off the ground, hits him in the family jewels. Ouch. He's down. Trainer comes out, checks on him, shakes it off, gets back in the box, hits a single. Okay, well done. Took. Took one to the nuts. Bounce up, shake it off, back in the box, get a hit. Even goes back. Even goes Back out into the field in the fifth.
Michael Hosky
Kind of like Taki it at Georgia Tech, right?
Akron Layman
Correct, Correct. But one small difference.
Michael Hosky
Okay.
Akron Layman
Joshua Coroda Grauer ruptured his testicle on that foul ball and kept playing. Got a hit, went back into the field, ended up leaving the game in the sixth and went and got emergency surgery on his testicle. Oh yeah. You want guys to think you're tough bad. Yeah. Hey, let me get a single with my ruptured testicle real quick. I'll go back in the field, play some third base, see if it how it's feeling. Dude,
Michael Hosky
no way.
Akron Layman
He's on the injured list now. By the way.
Guest or Co-host (unnamed)
He.
Akron Layman
He has been placed on the IL by the ace.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, I think the only reason he made it back out onto the field, like he was having an out of body experience. I think that's what happened. Like the adrenaline, it's like, you know, in, in battle someone gets shot and is able like to, you know, make it to the Humvee somehow. Despite all odds, that had to be what was going on. I mean I. I cannot even imagine the pain.
Akron Layman
All the respect in the world to JK G. Now I will say maybe the best part of the entire thing, he gets back into the box, the ace, play by play guy goes. Looks. Looks like he will come up with no balls and one strike. Pretty good, dude.
Michael Hosky
So what does this mean for the future is, does he start every at bat from this point on with one ball or.
Akron Layman
I don't know. I. One could. I am not a urologist, but what one would hope that it surgically repaired and it'll be just fine. Keep the pair.
Michael Hosky
Dude, that just the ruptured. The sound of that, like it just makes me squeamish, dude.
Akron Layman
It's one thing for it to happen, but to get back into the box and get a hit like, dude, that's, that's some tough stuff. That's some grown man stuff. So winner of the week for obvious reasons, Joshua Kuroda Grauer from the. From the ace.
Michael Hosky
You're a better man than I am.
Akron Layman
Mental fortitude. Wow. My loser of the week. The Lou Dort ERA in Oklahoma City's over. Ted.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
Thunder trade Lou Dort in a three team deal. Thunder ended up getting three second round picks in the deal and Lou Dort ends up in Atlanta. And the bottom line is I'm just gonna miss watching him play basketball in a Thunder jersey. Dead. I know he had his shortcomings, but I always enjoyed watching that man fly around on the basketball court. And I will just always appreciate the effort, the intensity that he played with night in and night out in a Thunder jersey. And I will never forget the barrage of threes against Denver that it felt like as important as anything in that championship run. I'm just, I'm going to miss as he's hoisting, as he's, he's, he's cocking the trebuchet for the three. Ted. I'm just going to miss the, the slow build of the Lou Chance in the crowd. Like I'm, there's just a lot of lot I'm going to miss about the men.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, I agree. Become a fixture from the, you know, going from the depths of the rebuild to the championship and you know, strong, tough, physical, you know, kind of the mentality that he plays with. I guess my biggest question does this make. Are they a better team coming out of this?
Akron Layman
You hope. You hope. But like, because you're going to be
Michael Hosky
filling that spot with a different type of player.
Akron Layman
Right. So it comes down to, I think one of the biggest questions is, okay, who's going to replace him as the tone setter of the team? Because like, I do think he set the tone for us defensively and I. But you know, in the most optimistic Thunder fan is going to say, hey, this opens up more minutes for Case and Wallace, more minutes for A.J. mitchell, more minutes for Jared McCain and the offensive punch that those guys can provide outweigh what Lou gives you defensively. That's the hope. Right? Do I expect case Wallace or AJ Mitchell or Jared McCain to be able to guard some of the guys that Lou Dort guarded night in, a night out? I do not. But it probably puts more on Jalen Williams. Jalen Williams has to be healthy and guard some of these bigger, more formidable guard, slash forward guys that are some of the best players in the NBA. And he's capable of that. But, and I mean, maybe I guess the most optimistic Thunder fan would say Otega away. We picked him in the second round. He's going to become the next Lou Dort.
Michael Hosky
Okay.
Akron Layman
But this is, you know, and you saw, you saw it with the Presley quote that he gave to the Oklahoma. Like this is a financial decision. I don't think the team is necessarily better right away. Yeah, like you give up one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. Are you going to be better right away? Maybe not. But I think the hope is that this opens the door for guys to play more minutes and develop like Bennett, search included, who we just drafted and maybe even Topich like it, these young guys with the way that the league works now these young guys have to play and develop and the hope is that those guys will fill the void. And then maybe you're, you're not as quite as good defensively, but you're more of a threat offensively. You've got more punch on the offensive side of the court. We'll see. But just makes me sad he's gone, man. He's been a, he's been a fixture in my life for a long time now and I've just, I've really enjoyed cheering for the men.
Michael Hosky
Yeah. And I'm kind of interested to see how like what this means for him because the situation in how the Thunder played was kind of perfect for his ability. Can he, can he find that, that same mix somewhere else to where you get the most out of him? Does that make sense?
Akron Layman
Yeah, I do think one of the things that Presti and the organization are great at is taking care of those, their guys in these trade scenarios. And Dort was not going to get a long term big extension from the Thunder. But now you deal him to Atlanta, he's going to have to earn his time. I'm not sure he's even going to start there. We'll see. But he's got a chance to go earn himself a long extension now. Maybe he gets extended, agrees to something with Atlanta before the season. That's also, you know, that's completely possible. But I, I do think that's something that maybe people haven't talked about enough is Presti and the Thunder, they put him in this position where hey, he wasn't getting the extension here. Let's deal. You and I, I, I hope you play at a really high level and get an extension there. You know what I'm saying?
Michael Hosky
Yeah, no, I'm with you.
Akron Layman
But the, I saw this from Bobby Marks and it's crazy to think that this is how the, the numbers like the, the cap in the NBA works. But trading Wiggins, Dort and Isaiah Joe and then drafting Mara Sturts and acquiring, I think we acquired like seven second round picks and all of that, that has reduced the Thunders payroll by $323 million.
Michael Hosky
I don't even.
Akron Layman
Well, that crazy, insane with the, the second apron stuff and the tax stuff, it's like, isn't that crazy? $323 million.
Michael Hosky
That's. Yeah, that's crazy. That is an insane amount of money for. I like what we're talking about with these guys. You're not even mentioning anyone close to Like a premier player on your. I mean, they're all good players, but you know what I mean, like, as far as, you know, your highest paid guys, you feel like you'd have to move like your top two max contract guys in order to save that amount of money. But that's wild.
Akron Layman
Yeah, I. I think that the Dort trade. Because you didn't bring any players back, Right. You didn't bring any salary back. You just brought the picks back.
Michael Hosky
Yeah.
Akron Layman
You factored Dort's salary and then what it. If you kept him, what you would have paid in tax? It's like nearly a hundred million dollars or something like that. I'm pretty sure that's what I read. Isn't that crazy that that's how this league work in that nuts?
Michael Hosky
I mean, I'd like to see the formulas going into these spreadsheets just to try and figure out all these numbers. That's crazy.
Akron Layman
Well, I.
Michael Hosky
Every NBA team have an actuary on.
Akron Layman
Yes. Contract.
Michael Hosky
Bunch of nerds got to.
Akron Layman
Bunch of nerds that went to Harvard and Yale, mit. Like, yeah, nerds.
Michael Hosky
There's probably an entire like, like class schedule of NBA roster management at mit.
Akron Layman
But I. You have to imagine. And this was in the quote that Presti gave to the Oklahoma. And also, like, this is about spinning on future teams. Case and Wallace is extension eligible. AJ Mitchell's extension eligible next year. So we'll see what that all looks like. But yeah, you get under the second apron, I think you, you know, create three trade exceptions as well. Then, like, that's all great, but it's just one of those things where, hey, man, you. You lose a guy that's been a central figure of the organization and it, it becomes about cap savings and second apron. But it's like, ultimately, I'm just gonna miss watching Lou Dort play basketball for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Michael Hosky
Yeah, I agree. You hate that Sometimes, like, players that have a lot to do with the culture that got you to where you are, you know, just because of the structure, get reduced to a dollar figure in a column. You know, that's kind of how it's got to be handled.
Akron Layman
It's unfortunate, but that's just. Hey, I, I saw that. It doesn't look like there's going to be any NBA teams in, you know, that. That are in the second apron.
Michael Hosky
Wow.
Akron Layman
So it. Meanwhile, you've got some Thunder fans. They're like, no. Pay the 100 million for Lou.
Michael Hosky
Right.
Akron Layman
It's like, even Steve Ballmer's like, no. And he's like, one of the richest guys in the world. Everyone's just like, no, this. I. It does feel like the system needs to be readdressed, you know?
Michael Hosky
Yeah. Well. And honestly, I think whenever one or two teams go into the apron and go above and beyond, it stresses out everyone else to have to go above and beyond as well to stay competitive. So kind of an agreement maybe to reign things in a little bit is. Is what you're saying. I don't know, but just. It's fascinating.
Akron Layman
I'm gonna miss Wiggins. I'm gonna miss Isaiah Joe. But, like, Dort's on a different level, man. I'm just gonna. He's been one of my guys, and I will always, always respect the fact that that dude was never scared to hoist a three in any moment. I just. I loved it. I loved it. I know some people didn't think they were going in, man, but for whatever reason, I was always like, yep, going in. Come on.
Michael Hosky
Whenever you don't know if it's going in or not, I. Whatever. It's like, it makes it hit a little bit harder when it does. Right.
Akron Layman
Yeah, that. That's going to be hard to replace. Like, the build up of the Luchant as he's getting ready to hoist one to the rafters.
Michael Hosky
Yep.
Akron Layman
And then the elation when it went in, that'll be hard to. I. I don't think we have. I don't think we have anyone we can replace that with. It's okay.
Michael Hosky
No, if I know them, though, they'll be. They'll be okay.
Akron Layman
This is. I think this is the best way to put it. It's like, I look forward to the Atlanta Hawks coming and playing in Oklahoma City because I want to be able to. I. I want the fans and every. I want to be able to show my appreciation to Lou Dort, and I just might, just might do a little Lou as he's shooting some threes during the game. I think everyone's going to do that. It's just going to be. It's going to be hard to break that habit.
Michael Hosky
I know it. I know it well. I'm thankful for the effort he played with while he was here.
Akron Layman
That's best way to put it. Birthday shout outs. Happy 7th birthday to Jeff Hale.
Michael Hosky
Happy 10th birthday to Will Crutchfield.
Akron Layman
Happy 26th birthday to Montana Womack.

Hosts: Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman
In this episode, Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman break down the most memorable and insightful quotes from the first two days of SEC Media Days—focusing on Oklahoma’s representatives: head coach Brent Venables and players John Mateer, Eddie Pierre-Louis (EPL), and Taylor Wein. The conversation expands to notable soundbites from coaches and players around the SEC, including the headline-making comments from league commissioner Greg Sankey and Georgia's Kirby Smart about a potential SEC breakaway from the NCAA. The show closes with the hosts' weekly winners and losers in the sports world, touching on golf drama, World Cup excitement, and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s roster moves.
Main Themes: Venables’ leadership, run game emphasis, and player development
The hosts balance in-depth football analysis with lighthearted banter and personality. Quotes are often used for context, but humor and personal reactions are well integrated (“Let me get a single with my ruptured testicle real quick”; “If someone’s open, throw it to them”). The show remains accessible for non-experts while offering the kind of inside perspective that only connected former players can provide.
This episode is a must-listen for OU fans, SEC followers, and anyone seeking a blend of football insight, locker-room storytelling, and sports-world perspective.
