Steven is our guest this week and it's singular. So, yep, that's it. We have a lot of news though, right up front. And let's start with the podcast news first. I think I mentioned the this plan a couple weeks ago on the. On the show. Well, first of all, I want to give Sam and Steve a huge thank you for covering last week to do the anime recaps. There's still many more, I believe left. I think there's like four or five. We are starting a new off week series Kirsten and I will be hosting. It's called thanks to Stephen for the name, by the way. One Piece by the Book. We are doing a volume in off week. So every week the manga is not on, we're going to go through a volume. You could read it like a book club so you could, you know, join us in reading those. The first of these volumes will be Wanted, which Kirsten and I had not read. I just read like it. And I've read Romance, dawn and Monsters, but I had not read the other stories. So that was my first time. And I have a bunch of thoughts and it was very cool to read. And we'll be going through that this coming week since there is no manga chapter because of Oban.

Yes. And I said Oban was in July and I should have known it was in August because I was there for Oban like 12 years ago and it was in August. But that's all very hazy. I Don't really remember that. Anyway,

We're going to go through what happened in the year or more likely the season that the volume originally came out in Japan. So for wanted, this is going to be pre 1997 stuff. So like what was going on there or what was going on here? We're going to recap what's going on in that volume. We'll take away highlights and then at the end we're going to go through what's changed in retrospect and we're going to start. Also because people love these, we're going to also rank them as we go. Like what volume you think? Well, Kirsten and I are since yeah, we're tier list. People love them. So we'll just say, hey, did you like the events of this one more than the last one? Yes. But that might be more about me is that there is a new service called Manga Million that was launched by Shueisha to celebrate its 100th anniversary where they're aiming to translate a million pages of manga into over 100 languages. It launched on the 6th 6th with over 400 titles. And I think it's limited time. It's saying it's running until the end of 2027. That's a very long limit time.

It's funny. Manga Million implies the existence of Bonga Billion.

Yeah. For a second there I thought it was a scratchy lottery type situation.

Or a manga. Manga a Million. Right? Books a million. Isn't that. That was a thing.

So one is a company. So Chopper Man. So I'll take these examples and thanks to One Piece Wiki for compiling these. I'm going to be trusting them. Here. Chopper man is edited by Flito Japan Inc. Immediately suspicious. Especially when. When you look up Flito, it says Multilingual data for AI Real Time AI interpretation. So that makes me think. Even though it does, they have specifically said it is not to cover bases here. The One Piece in Love was translated by Aw. So that is not a full name. I don't believe translation for the Kobe one is by Blue Horizon, which again, I am trusting Google here.

Wasn't that the fake name for Star wars during filming?

calling Dr. Medebang. Yeah. So there's been some controversy around this for that reason, and I think rightfully so in my point of view. Do you guys have any thoughts on this either as a. As a idea or in practice? I haven't looked at them yet.

The idea of it is a good idea, but like, especially if you're gonna be translating comedy, you need to have people who get the jokes first be able to translate them.

And what I have heard is that a lot of the text is like. You'll have like 10 point font, you know, like tiny font and like the big bubble. It makes no sense, you know.

And the second day starts at 10:30 Japan time, which I believe doing this off the top of my head, I believe is 9:30am Eastern on Sunday. Sunday. Sunday. You have to say it three times. It will include voice casts, One Piece card game stuff, of course. And The World Top 100 Character Popularity Poll results will be revealed over both days. That's probably the big thing.

And so Emu's I guess, sort of blown back there with his hurts donated up and his bevel tail coming off. And a big hockey puck shaped chunk of the tree has been taken out from the middle of the trunk there.

Okay, the assistants didn't have that much time. And also, this isn't the middle of the tree. It's a branch.

In the meantime, Luffy is screaming in pain, as you know, as one does when they've got. When they've been impaled by two legendary swords. And Gabon gives Luffy the business. He grabs him by the collar and goes, hey, on your feet, straw hat Luffy. And Luffy is screaming in pain as he's being shaken by an old man. He says, I'm disappointed in you. Aren't you ashamed at getting saved by an injured old man like me? Your white form, Emperor of the Sea Lif. He's like, ow, ow ow ow ow ow.

Very interesting to note that when he combines the mantis and the axe, that I think this is probably true for like all of the sort of East Asian cultures where there's an idiom because it comes from a Chinese, like old Chinese poem or story or something like that, about a mantis that stands in the road and you know, like. Like a mantis is going to defend itself by like, intimidating whatever, you know, holding up his arms like, I'm going to fight you. And so he does that when, like the emperor, like the human emperor's carriage, like, drives by through the road and there's this tiny little mantis who's like. And so the. The mantis's ax is basically an idiom that refers to, like, brave and spirited, but utterly futile resistance. Don't know why Oda would have chosen that in this particular scene.

Yeah. But kind of unrelated. I don't even. Distracting.

Yeah. So basically he's saying, knock, knock. Who's there? Mantis. I don't know. So Emu says, is this a joke to thee? And he says, you want to kill him, don't you? And Emu says, with the utmost conviction, I do. And you can. This is a kind of a fun panel. Luffy is at the bottom of the barrel here, end of his rope, just going sort of crawling a little bit as you see the battle unfold in the background of this small panel. And we move on to the next page.

And then Mantis, I mean Zorak. I mean, Gabon says, does he really mind you so much? No, I'm not gonna do that.

And he glares back and he says, who art thou? Does thou recognize moo? And then he switches from the ax. I guess he's like, well, yeah, you know, he. He generates in his other. You know, he. He moves the ax to one hand and then with his free hand pulls out Honebami Toshiro, which is again, another real world weapon. In this case, I do believe it is an actual sword. It's not a legendary sword. It is a sort of. Toshiro was the name of the swordsmith and Honey Bomby Means like bone gnar or something like that. Like a pretty. Pretty gnarly sounding name. And so. Yeah, that is a. That is a famous katana.

The hilt kind of looks like an Ouroboros a little bit.

Yeah, there's something weird going. Or a wagon wheel or a mushroom.

No, you could see the actual snake on it chomping on its own tail. So it. I think it is an. I think it is an Ouroboros, maybe. Yeah, if you zoom in, that looks like it. Am I like in that middle panel? Am I wrong?

Little chomper is snapping. And Gabon retorts the words of Joy Boy. And this takes Emu aback. And he says, but don't get it twisted. We're not blindly obedient to some man from the past we've never met before. We just want to see our captain's dream brought to light. So, you know, in other words, like, Gabon heard everyone having the debate about, you know, fate, destiny versus free will or whatever, and he was like, no, no, no, this is different. It's not actually Joy Boy. We just. We're doing Joy Boy's bidding because Roger wanted us to do Joy Boy's bidding. So Emu coughs, and it looks like he's got a little. Little drip going from the. The corner of his mouth. And he says, captain, because he doesn't realize who this is. And Luffy is still writhing around on the ground. Interesting to note that, like, he has not lost the gear five throughout all of this, which I feel like is worth noteworthy here, because usually when, you know, when he gets kind of knocked down and out for a spell, that's when he. He goes back into.

You mean when he gets stabbed by two gigantic legendary swords? Yeah, that.

[A]

Yeah. He's like, oh, I'm gonna get that old man for making fun of me. And he's. He's like yelling at himself now. He's like, heal. Get better. Just a moment is all I need. But Emu and Gabon's conversation continues as Emu says, who is this captain? And Caban stands there, you know, does it does a bold stance and just says the King of the Pirates. Gold D. Roger Doom. Very cool panel there. And on the next set of pages, Emu. Once again, another close up of Emu kind of reflecting on what he's hearing. And then we get this kind of interesting flashback to a. A scene that we have not seen but is clearly back from Roger's era where. Where Emu is sitting on the empty throne and the five elders are kneeling at the foot of the stairs. And he's saying this disgusts Moo. Why is the D on the King of the Pirates spread? Not that name. And they say, yes, great one. And so their. Their genius plan was to. To just start calling him Gold Roger instead.

Move the D over slightly so it actually makes more sense than if it weren't there.

Yeah, it's like typo this whole time.

And Emu is like looking up at him in surprise. And Gabon says, sorry about this one, Jewelry Adam. It wasn't my intent to eat you. Which if you. If you've forgotten because it hasn't been mentioned once since I just realized it

Yeah, but you could say, well, you know, it was. It was in the anime a couple weeks ago. But yes, Gabon's nickname is the Mountain Eater because he cut down all the trees off of the mountain. And so, yeah, so he's referring to that as it corresponds to the Jewelry Adam. And he starts crackling with hockey energy. And he's like, oh, damn these creaky joints. It sucks getting old. Which is the most relatable.

And this is kind of similar to like the Divine Departure, right? It's. It's one of those, like old sort of Shinto references where it's supposed to be like the. The gate between like the, you know, the human world and the world of the gods, the commie. And yeah, it seems like it just unleashes a couple severing blasts where it's. It's, you know, not just the. The little, you know, Twig branch that Luffy was impaled on. But now it is like the big. The whole branch. Yeah. Well, it's not. No, it's not the trunk.

Particularly Imu here as we continue the next panel. And see that he is a little bit. A little bit worse for where certainly was distracted from doing what he was trying to do. And he prepares his potentially oroboros sword. As he says, still the pirate. Sorry, sorry. Still the pipe. No, still the pirate King's crew. Even decrepit that was so determined to believe. I think it's the kojiki, which is like one of those, you know, over a thousand years old, you know, sort of religious texts. And I believe. If I remember correctly, I didn't look. I have not looked this up since then. But I think that was like. It's not really clear if that is the name of a person in the Kojiki or if it's like a sort of category of people or perhaps beings or something like that.

This fight is so large scale despite it being two non giant characters, that it is spanning through Elbaf here. And as it crashes down, we head back to the. With a crunch, we head back to the Sun World where we see a gigantic ragnir of course, standing atop one of the branches here with the straw hat, saying, what was that? Presumably a very loud thud.

Yeah, this is a. This is a very cool chapter. A lot of. A lot of great moments. You know, it's kind of a. Kind of a statement chapter where it feels like, you know, as if I. You know, obviously, we. We know what's going on in the story. But it. And. And it has been made pretty clear, I think, to all the characters. But, you know, if it wasn't already blindingly obvious, this is kind of like Gabon slapping Emu in the face and saying, like, hey, this is the kid. Like, this is the kid you got to look out for. Like, this is the guy who's gonna beat you. And that is. It's. It's cool to see that. That kind of statement of intent from, you know, from a. A notable character. You know, it feels like this is, you know, this. This is a signature moment for the. The Elbaf arc and. And how it's going to affect, you know, the. The end game of the story, I guess. And yeah, I don't know. You know, there's just. There's a lot of cool action. There are some kind of interesting and perhaps debatable like, little exchanges here in this conversation with like, sort of the. The knowing nods, winks and nods between Gabon and Emu. But yeah, I get the sense. I mean, we. We could talk about it a little later, but, like, I feel like Oda is kind of giving us some. Has been giving us some breadcrumbs as to, like, where this all begins with Emu and Joy Boy. And I feel like Gabon knows enough as well to. To be kind of teasing him about it a little bit. But yeah, I. I was not surprised at all about the. The conclusion of this. This chapter, though. And in fact, I remember thinking, you know, the. The previous chapter, when we end with Gabon stepping into Save Luffy, that was like.

Yeah, that. That was like the. Okay, this is the part where, you know, the. The hero of the old generation, you know, makes his one last stand. You know, I mean, not to. I wasn't even thinking about it. But, you know, Obi Wan Kenobi is a. Is a good.

Good comparison here. Yeah. For. For what's going on here because, you know, if. If you have an old guy who's capable of kind of going toe to toe with Emu, well, it's. Luffy's not gonna. Gonna be the. The king of the pirates if Gabon's doing all the work for him, which is pretty much exactly what he is, what he tells him. Yeah. And so, yeah, it's just. It is Gabon just being a complete badass from start to finish, which is. Is. Is great to see since obviously we get a lot more of the sort of goofy side of him in when it's not like life and death stakes earlier in the arc. So, you know, getting to see him kind of shining as is his. His role is. It's very satisfying to see. But yeah, it's gonna be. It's gonna be rough to. To see what. What happens to him, I think.

Yeah, I liked this chapter a lot. It was really cool seeing Gabon go toe to toe with Emu from like, a fight perspective. I think this is probably some of the strongest action that it has done in a little bit. You can actually kind of see what's happening. You can sort of follow this fight, which I really appreciate. And I also like that Luffy is still, like, he's not out of commission. He's just in. He's very badly burned. He's very. He's in a lot of pain. Yeah, he's like. He's able. He's not passed out. He's able to listen to gabon and be pissed off that gabon is totally right about what he's saying. You know, I think I. I really do like that this is a point. Another point in. In, you know, in Luffy's arc where he has to get the hard truth about who he has to be to be king of the pirates.

for gabon to give it to him. I don't think there's anybody more fitting. I mean, maybe Rayleigh, but Rayleigh was like, really was basically good cop, and. And Gabon is. Gabon is Mr. Hardass over here. So I think that's kind of fun when you have that dichotomy between the two left and right hands or whatever of gold. Roger.

Ultimately, I think it's kind of fun to think about.

Yes. No, no. 100%. But, yeah, I think the way I sort of envisioned all of this going is because we haven't gotten to the astral plane. We have to sort of find out what that is. I was always envisioning that Luffy died here or something, and he goes to their equivalent of valhalla, which is, you know, the top of the tree. And then, you know, there's some business about him, you know, being the destined child or whatever, the third children, and then coming back to life or whatever, and, you know, being. Being all hopped up and ready to fight. But I do think that, I don't know, maybe. Maybe Luffy. Maybe we were getting another power up at some point here. Luffy seems to think that he's going to, like, launch one more ultimate technique or something against Emo and that it will work. And I don't know what's going to happen here. It could be another gear, could be just a futile punch, or it could be Emu then just runs out of gas and retreats because.

What we haven't seen since Emu's arrival is him coughing up the blood or whatever, you know.

Like, oh, if he can do this to the five Elders, then. Then what's the point? So it's. It's interesting to see this sort of happen because nothing else happened in this chapter. I don't really have anything else to talk about except for this. This pretty cool fight. So, yeah, that's. That's it for me. But I liked it a lot.

Yeah. I have a few things I want to mention. I. I think just like thinking of the five Elders showing up in Egghead, especially now that. What did that happen three years ago? Let's say something like some insane number like that two years ago. Like the fact that they showed up when they did as. I don't know if we mentioned this at the time, but probably goes to show how big, you know, how small they are in the pond compared to where we still have to go. And the five Elders ended up being, at the end of the day, five henchmen. Look, henchmen with some of the best card game cards. You know, I. I get it from the. What's his name? The jujutsu Kaisen artist. Anyway, yeah, yeah, those salmon and golfer did introduce me to those great cards and they are very good. But my point being is that. Yeah, it was the. I think it really put this. Really has helped put that into perspective. There were a few little things I wanted to mention. This was a. Yes, I agree. This was a good fight. I think Gabon as the MVP of this arc is solidifying more and more, especially dad reasons. I think, as Alex put it, like, I read this. I'm like, first. I think first I was reading this, like, narratively, like, okay, that's because, you know, we. We critique it, you know, every week. So I was like, okay, that's a good way for Oda to go in the story we kind of told it talked about that as Steven mentioned. But then I'm like, oh, Jesus Christ. Colin and Ripley. Oh no. And Ripley's going through it right now too. But Colin. Oh no. And yeah, I. I know they're fictional characters, but like, for the. For the sake of Colin, I'm like, oh, I hope he doesn't. But yeah, I mean, story wise, I think it would be like this is. This hasn't reached Pel level yet. Where it's like, oh, he needs to. Like, it doesn't make sense that he's not dead. He could still be alive because whatever happens next might not even involve him and might. And giving his arm to loot for Luffy is a big deal in and of itself. So, like, I don't think I would be disappointed with either outcome. That said, if I had to put money down on an outcome right now, it is not looking good for him, I do not think. I'm sure that is the feeling most people had reading this, because that's the first thing that popped into my head at the end of this. The initial conversation between Gabon and Emu is extremely interesting to me.

The very first, like, lines of the chapter, which take place on page four. You're a hideous sight. Like, nothing of this mortal world is such an interesting. I'm like, curious, Steven, like, how is.

Well, yeah. Especially with the Japanese. So, like, mortal world and the one who knows the world. Like, I think I get. Get what? You know, you're a translator, so I think I get what. What you were trying to get across. But I wonder, right, if Oda had anything, you know, in there.

So like, a more straightforward version would just be like, nothing of this world, which, you know, can be. Can. Can mean like, oh, you know, you look like an alien or something. But. But probably more commonly would be like, nothing that belongs in, you know, normal life because he kind of looks like a demon, basically.

And yeah, I mean, that's potentially the theme, for sure. And yeah. So I don't know. I mean, it is kind of like an opening salvo in, like, the. The war of taunts that goes on in this. In this chapter, for sure. But it is kind of like a Gabon. Yeah. I don't know. You know, there's a couple there. I think there's multiple ways you could. You could take that, I suppose.

I mean, Gabon is probably also someone who has seen a lot of shit in the world. Like, he's been around. Yeah, not just been around. He's been around the whole world more than once. Like, I think the fact that Emu sticks out as something so. And I'm going to use the word alien, you could translate that however you want, I think really speaks to how we as readers should. Also, I think we, like, mentioned when we first saw Emu's design, like, how it looks like it's from a different anime or a different manga. And it's almost like Gabon is remarking on that. It's like, you should be an Inuyasha right now. What are you doing here?

Yeah. And I had just read all of the Wanted comics, so they're kind of in my head right now, and we're going to be talking about that next week. But he. In those comics, he is much. He's like, very willing to, you know, break the bounds of reality. Like, either, you know, God literally being a character in one of them or just having ghosts and a lot of stuff that just doesn't really exist in one piece and by design. So it makes me think. And he always said, I had the ending to this series planned at the beginning. So part of me is like, okay, Oda is 51 right now. I think. What was he thinking when he was, like, 14? Like, would be the end of this series, which is probably around when he, likes, figured it out, because he had been working on this magnum opus since he was in middle school. Like, how would a middle schooler have this shonen battle go? Like, for the good of being a middle schooler and the bad of being a middle schooler and having demons in it. And it's. And the COVID of Jump, you know, it sparked that in me as well. Like. Like, I think we might finally be seeing that side of things, and it might just be that simple. Like ODA has really held back on the post mortem stuff and we might just finally be seeing that here. Which, that conversation, the reason I mention it is Gabon saying like nothing of this mortal world and responding one who knows the world, which I think has double several meanings. Not just the one I was just discussing, but also the truth of the

which has been discussed a lot. Maybe this is lost and we've been in purgatory this whole time. Possible, I guess. But why? I don't know. Does it really make any sense?

So like Oda has felt like he's been kind of retconning Emu like as a reader, you know, the idea of this all powerful leader of the world government does kind of feel tacked on though. It's been tacked on since 2019. I get that. And that was somehow seven years ago. I don't get that part. But it's true. However, Joy Boy has been a concept since 2011, I think whenever the poneglyph was discovered in Fishman island, so. And the seeds of it I think have been planted a lot better. And getting the connection here with Joy Boy and Gabon in that, you know, laugh tale is connected to Joy Boy because it is a tale of his. Of Joy Boys is very interesting. Like they're basically talking about, if not the one piece, at least what lies at that island or place. So like we're. This is one of the very few times ODA is like able to kinda right in front of you have a conversation that at the end of the series will probably make a lot more sense contextually. And that's what I. That's. That was going through my mind a lot this. In this one.

Yeah, I think that. I think that's definitely what he was going for. The effect that he was going for.

I can't think of a lot of other times besides like Odin's flashback, maybe some of the conversations with Whitebeard, the Whitebeard Roger one. And I mean like all of the characters we see there, like telling you that this is a very pivotal moment where we are now With Rayleigh and Crocus and Shanks and Odin and Whitebeard. Like, you know, this ranks in those moments and just. Yeah, yeah, go ahead, Alex.

Sir. I wanted to bring up. It's kind of funny that Emu was like, yeah, I guess all this talk about destiny was just coincidence. And we've talked about that, like, for episodes and episodes about how, like, yeah, how Emu just spends the entire time thinking like, oh, this is Troy boy. This is Troy boy. When just could be. You know, I do. Like, that was that. That had been brought up. Biota. Like, it's.

I'm glad it's going through his mind too. Like, because, yeah, it's like narratively kind of been there. Obviously. We've been talking about this since like the gear 5 stuff. Like the. And before. And well before that. Like, we don't. I think as a podcast generally do not like the idea of he is destined to be the Pirate King and he has this power within him. And it had been foretold thousands of years ago Go. And that Luffy isn't of his own will doing this. And I think this chapter, ODA does really do a good job of addressing that head on. Like, yes, you know, we agree with what we read or what we heard from Joy Boy or however that works, but that doesn't mean we're obeying him or following a fated path. And I think that's a. A. That's a good line to. To draw. Yeah. I don't know if I have anything else specifically that hasn't been said. I. I like. Gabon is going up in that. In my tier rankings of awesome characters. The creaky joints line is not just for our oldies here, but is also for power scalers who are like, ah, his joints. He must have been stronger than Emu back in the day.

I mean, that's a. That's a word that we recognize, even if it's not really clear what that would mean as an attack. But because it had these descriptive kanji, and it was about, like, the weapon that he was using, I was like, okay, well, let me translate the sort of the descriptive kanji as well. Just. Just to kind of flesh it out a little bit and. And make it make a bit more sense to the English reader. And so far, like, most of. Most of his weapons have followed that. But then that previous chapter when he busted out, like, four or five of them, and in some cases, they were, like, in a whole list that he was listing, like, in a single bubble, and he started kind of shifting it to where some of them, like, did not necessarily have, like, the kanji with them or whatever. So I. If I recall correctly, the Acts of Xingtian was like that. That was literally that. That was all it was, was Acts of Xingtian. And, you know, you have to look up the, you know, the. The. The name to see, like, what it is or how it, you know, refers to the real. The real world mythology thing. So. Yeah, so it's not all, you know, they're. They're not all. I guess, yeah, they're not all put in the exact same style in English because they're also not all done the same way in Japanese. But that's definitely like what I'm looking for when he, you know, busts out a new. A new weapon. And then sometimes when it's like, it's already been introduced sometimes then I'll skip the blade of whatever. Like the stigma where it's just like, okay, let's just get. Just put the. The one word in there is enough at that point. Point. So that's kind of where I'm at on those.
