we have big news this afternoon. Trump's China summit with Xi Jinping is falling apart. The expectations are lowering, all before the two world leaders even meet, because right now the United States is realizing that it actually does not hold all the cards. China is offering no concessions and US Officials now believe that the best path forward isn't a major deal with China, some type of grand bargain with the Chinese government, but rather a more limited set of circumstances in which the status quo remains. It comes as Trump officials are struggling to answer for why we gave a no bid contract to a pool contractor who had never even built a pool in their lives to do the reflecting pool. And Mike Johnson, you know he's running from questions about the ballroom and affordability. Lots to cover Like Comment Share, subscribe, Get the word out and if you can, subscribe to my substack link below to support my work this afternoon. Trump's Qi Summit is downsized as expectations have fallen. The Trump meeting in Beijing is now expected to be a limited, low impact summit focused on maintaining stability rather than major deals. The key topics will include Iran and fentanyl, but analysis analysts say that the US has little leverage and Beijing is offering no clear agenda or concession. Instead of this large scale grand bargain, talks are likely to yield only modest steps, like extending existing trade truces and maintaining limited sector cooperation. Experts say shifting geopolitical conditions have strengthened China's position, making meaningful breakthroughs unlikely. When President Trump campaigned in 2024, he promised a trade agenda that would hit China harder than any other economic partner. Expanding on actions he had taken in his first term, he talked about imposing a tariff of 60% or more on the country. The rest of the world will be subject to tariffs too, but they would be much lower at 10% or 20%. But more than a year into his term, the picture looks dramatically different. Though tariffs are higher on China overall, when the tariffs, when you add in all of the other stuff. Other countries have faced punitive levies that were nearly as high and sometimes even higher. Because Trump has criticized Europe, has criticized Canada, while approaching China more limited and more cautiously. Rather than pushing China for broad structural changes to its economy, as Trump's aides did in its first term, the focus now is just mainly maintaining stable relations between the countries while restoring or increasing U.S. sales of products like airplanes, ethanol, soybeans, beef and sorghum. So if you haven't heard the story before, it's essentially, we got ourselves into a pickle with China and now we're just trying to get back to a status quo with China. That sounds familiar. It's what happened with the Strait of Hormuz in Iran. The strait was opened, we launched war, the strait closed and we got ourselves into that pickle. And so now we're trying to figure out a way, okay, let's try to reopen the strait and just go back to the same place we were before. Why? Because things are too expensive. Whether with China or with Iran. It's causing prices to rise. And here's what Mike Johnson had to say in response to what Trump said yesterday, that he doesn't really think about the Americans financial situation.
Kachava and ZipRecruiter Advertiser
Yesterday the President was asked about whether American's financial concerns were motivating him to make a deal with Iran.
Progressive Insurance Announcer
His response was, I don't think about Americans financial situations.
Kachava and ZipRecruiter Advertiser
Do you think that's the right message? Do you think the President should be considering the financial tool?
Trump Administration Official
I don't know the context in which he made that comment, but I can tell you the President thinks about Americans financial situations. I talk to him on average twice a day, sometimes three or four times a day, and we talk about it constantly. He's laser focused on, on trying to resolve the conflict in Iran. Because if we get the Strait of Hormuz, when we get the Strait of Hormuz reopen, that will alleviate a lot of pressure with gas prices and other things in the economy. Now, we've done everything.
Political Commentator
I need the context. He sounds like the other Republican leaders who are literally running from the President's comments, knowing that the president's comments are bad for business because they're bad for affordability. Things are too damn expensive right now in the United States of America, whether food, groceries, I mean, you name it, it's expensive. It really is, right now in this moment. And that's why. And part of that cost of living that's not talked about enough is the cost of Medicare every single month. It's why I partnered with Chapter, and I want you to know about it briefly. A lot of you are cutting back on groceries, driving further to save on gas, canceling things you used to enjoy. But your Medicare plan, well, that bill just keeps coming. And most people never look at it twice. Here's the thing. Medicare plans change every year. What your options are and what you're paying now, what's covered it may not be what it used to be when you signed up. And you'd never know unless someone actually looked. It's why I partnered with Chapter. They're independent Medicare advisors, the only ones that compare every plan nationwide. Their advisors are salaried. They don't get paid to push certain plans. They look at your doctor, your prescriptions, what matters to you, and they tell you the truth. If you're already on the right plan, they'll say so. If you're not, they'll just help you switch. Just last year, seniors who found new plans saved an average of $1,100 on healthcare costs. That's real money. It's free. Help in under 20 minutes. Call Chapter today at 8645-3806-6486-4538, 0664. I'm excited to partner with them, and I hope you like them, too. So let me know what you think when we talk about affordability. One key part of affordability is the ballroom, right? Because a lot of money that can go to things like lowering Medicare costs, which is health care costs generally, is going to this ballroom. Here's what Mike Johnson had to say.
News Interviewer
Also speaking of the economic front, gas prices are up, inflation's up, Americans having some financial hardships across the country. That being said, is right now the right time for Congress to be prioritizing a billion dollars for security apparatus at the White House, including $220 billion for the East Wing ballroom, given the fact that President Trump had said it would be paid for by private donations.
Trump Administration Official
Yeah, look, that's a, I think that's a gross misstatement of what's going on here in the bill. And by the way, it's in draft form right now, as you know, the second reconciliation bill. Sadly, we have to fund immigration enforcement and border on our own as a Republican Party, because, remember, Democrats want to give $0 to it. The Secret Service put in an urgent request for additional security measures. It's not for the ballroom, it's for security measures. Now, we don't know what the final bill is going to be that we get. They got to go through three more steps. They're going through the birdbath, the parliamentarian review of the bill. They've got to go through two markups and committees and then ultimately action on the House floor. So we're not going to prejudge that product. We're waiting for it to come from the Senate. But I will say this, that in one section of the bill, it addresses security measures. It's very specifically defined on what those security requests are from the Secret Service. And I will say this, for many of you that were in the ballroom just a few weeks ago and sat through and observed the third failed assassination attempt of a president just in a short number of years here, there's an urgent need for increased security measures. I mean, that is an objective fact and it should be something that's bipartisan. The ballroom is totally privately funded. The President has dedicated like $400 million.

That's not what's happening. You're giving them a billion dollars. You're literally giving them a billion dollars. That's not all. I want you to watch this exchange with Doug Burgum with over Donald Trump's little urgent exemption that he gave to this no bid contractor to redo the reflecting pool. That's a complete mess right now. Take a listen.

Familiar with Atlantic Industrial Coatings?
Government Official
I'm not familiar with that.
Investigative Reporter
So Atlantic Industrial Coatings is a company. Are you familiar with that company?
Government Official
You're saying Atlantic.
Investigative Reporter
Atlantic Industrial Coatings.
Government Official
Correct.
Investigative Reporter
Are you familiar with it or.
Government Official
I'm not familiar with Atlantic.
Political Commentator
Okay.
Investigative Reporter
Atlantic Industrial Coatings is the company that received a no bid federal contract for the project at the Lincoln Memorial Reflective Pool. Are you familiar with that now?
Government Official
I'm familiar with that project, yes, but not the company. I wasn't familiar with that specific name of the company.
Investigative Reporter
Okay, you're familiar with the fact that a company received a no bid contract to do the work on that project, Correct?
Government Official
I'm familiar that we have that we're working on a project to restore the reflecting pool before the summer season with record attendance. Yes, yes.
Investigative Reporter
And that was through a no bid $13 million contract, right? That's not, that's not up for debate. That's a fact.
Government Official
But I'm positive that we followed all of the required bidding rules. So you're emphasizing, you're emphasizing the word no bid like something nefarious has happened.
Investigative Reporter
Okay, then I reject. Explain it to me here. I'll ask you the question. My understanding of the federal procurement rules is that a no bid contract is reserved for situations where, quote, any delay would cause serious injury to the government. What is your proposition? Is what that there'd be serious injury to the government if this company didn't get the $13 million contract to do this particular project right now?
Government Official
Well, I think we do have a sense of urgency. I mean, we got handed a record amount of deferred maintenance. We had 19 fountains across the city that didn't work.
Investigative Reporter
Serious injury to the government. The serious injury to the government.
Government Official
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not a, I suppose a lawyer could.
Political Commentator
He's, by the way, he's claiming that the serious injury for the government to get this urgent exemption for this reflecting pool contract was allegedly that there were fountains not working throughout the city.
Government Official
Decide that. But I think that maybe all of us could agree that we would want to have our nation's capital looking great for the 250th. I mean, this is a common sense
Investigative Reporter
decision, I would say. Just last question, who picked this company? Because President Trump a few months ago in a New York Times article said, I have a guy who's unbelievable at doing swimming pools. He looked at it, he called me up, he said, sir, we can do something on it. Last night he posted on Truth Social also, I did not give out the contract Interior did to a contractor I did not know and have never used before. So Interior, he's talking about you. Did you give this $13 million no bid contract to this company that's never done business with the federal government before? The gentleman's time expired. The secretary could answer the question.
Government Official
The gentleman that you're talking about that has done construction work regarding pools and fountains for President Trump is not part of this contract. He's worked. He just, he's just a citizen that cared about it and offered some free advice. There is, there's nothing there there in
