have major developments this afternoon as Republicans are literally running away from the President of the United States, whether on Iran or this reflecting pool debacle, to the point where they're now erecting a fence behind the reflecting pool after arresting six people, citing seven others and investigating many others. But Republicans don't want to talk about Trump's Iran deal because how frustrated they are with the president. He hasn't briefed them yet. It's a bit of chaos inside the House and in the Senate, Iran says Trump and Vance continue to lie. All the while there is a director of National Intelligence who some say literally is a national security threat. At a time where we have the World cup and others, he's literally requesting to bring home the most classified document in the country, the Presidential Daily Briefing home. And one of the first questions he had on his day inside the Office of Director of National Intelligence was, where is my private jet? I have the latest right now. Make sure to like, comment, share and seriously if you can, subscribe to my substack link below to support my work and help me fight back against the constant attacks that we're seeing right now. Republicans don't want to talk about Trump's Iran deal. They're literally running away from it. Here was Speaker Mike Johnson earlier today.
Interviewer
On the Iran MoU. You are very critical of sanctions relief under the JCPOA. They're easing oil sanctions here and other sanctions will be eased. Do you have similar concerns here?
Mike Johnson
Look, there's a lot of moving parts right now. It is something the Trump administration is working around the clock on. I trust that they're going to come to a lasting solution on that. The world desperately needs it and we do as well. I am heartened to see that gas prices are coming down for the American consumer and the strait is reopened. We need to keep forward with good progress. The details are still being negotiated.
Interviewer
What about easing sanctions? They've already announced that with oil sanctions.
Mike Johnson
I am. I have always been a supporter of strong sanctions against Iran. There's a lot of moving parts to this and I got enough to do to manage the house over here. I'm not going to tell the administration how to negotiate that.
Interviewer
Told the Obama administration.
Aaron Maté
I got enough to do to manage the House. I'm not going to deal with the administration. And maybe this is why, because Iran is now publicly calling out Donald Trump and J.D. vance for lying, directly contradicting key claims the Trump administration has made about the U. S Iran agreement. After Trump claimed that they released Iranian funds would be tightly controlled by the United States and only used for humanitarian purposes. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson flatly rejected that characterization. Quote, regarding Iran's released assets previously illegally blocked by the US we will decide how to utilize them as we deem fit. There are no restrictions in this regard. Iran also pushed back on claims about future nuclear inspections, saying Iran has no plans to allow IAEA inspectors to enter nuclear sites that were damaged during the war. And while Iran isn't letting anyone in to Iran, you know who isn't letting anyone into the reflecting pool? The president of the United States. They're now erecting a barrier around it. Here's what he had to say yesterday,
Shopify/Mint Mobile Advertiser
that the Interior Department has video and photos.
Senator Mark Warner
We reached out to them and they
Shopify/Mint Mobile Advertiser
haven't shared it with us.
President Donald Trump
They've arrested, I think, six people on the reflecting pool. So the reflecting pool looks fantastic. I just got pictures of it. It's beautiful. But somebody went in with a knife and cut it. They cut it up good. And then they cut a 200, 350 foot slip in the form of lots of little slips and real horrible stuff. And they destroyed the grass. We put a brand new big load of grass out there and they destroyed it. So it's all being fixed. But it's a shame. So I understand five or six people are arrested. The Interior Department can refer to you on that. And I hear, I hear that, I hear they have six people under investigation.
Aaron Maté
You're about to speak. So that's the latest right now. Meanwhile, there's chaos within the intelligence community with even Republicans saying behind the scenes what the hell is happening with Bill Pulte? I spoke with Senator Mark Warner about all of this and more like Comment Share subscribe to my substack link below. Here's my conversation with the Senator. Great to be here with Senator Mark Warner. Now Senator, I want to jump right into it. I don't know if you saw, but Ms. Now reported today that firings have begun in the intelligence community led by Director Bill Pulte. What is your reaction to these firings and to Pulte being acting DNI right now?
Senator Mark Warner
Well, first of all, this was what I was worried about. This guy is totally not qualified for the job. We don't have confirmation that firings have taken place. I've seen a lot of press reports. You know, we have made inquiries. It seems like it's totally chaotic at the office of National Director of National Intelligence. There, there was word there was going to be firings. Then he said he changed his mind. So we don't know the accuracy. But this is the kind of chaos at a moment when we've got the World cup going on. We're coming up on the 250th anniversary of our country and to have this chaos as Director of National Intelligence is crazy. What we do know is two things that have been widely reported that ought to make people's head even more explode. Number one, he was saying, well, could he take home the Presidential daily brief? This is the most classified of all information. The idea that you could take it to a non secure location like your house shows his complete ignorance of our system. The other thing is, and this was such a Trumpian kind of focus, he wanted to know how soon he was going to get a government private plane so he could fly between DC, his house in Chicago and his place to I guess continued to genuflect before Trump down in Florida. So the priorities on private plane, misuse of classified information and then so in chaos. This is why we so wanted to not have him Even go in temporarily. This guy's a national security risk.
Aaron Maté
Well, I want to ask you because a lot of folks on the right say that we don't even need an office of the Director of National Intelligence. We have the CIA, we have the dia, other intelligence agencies.
President Donald Trump
We have.
Aaron Maté
What's the point of the DNI? What do you answer?
Senator Mark Warner
Well, the DNI was set up after 9 11. Remember one of the outcomes of the 911 report said, you know, FBI and CIA didn't even talk to each other. We actually have 18 intelligence agencies at this point. You can argue whether that's even too many. I mean, every one of the services has an intelligence component. State Department has one. We've got the folks who listen in the National Security Agency. We have satellites, nro, nga. So there was the idea of let's create this coordinating entity. When it was set up though, we didn't give this individual budgetary control. So it's a coordinating body. And that is one of the reasons why I said you got to have somebody with national security experience. Because if you're going to corral all these different agencies, you know, you got to have some respect. Bill Pulte, obviously, with no national security background, can only do damage, not respect. There is a valid argument that this grew to be too large. I mean, it's a couple thousand people and it needs to be slimmed down. There is even other. There are, I think legitimate arguments like the British have somebody inside the Prime Minister's office. Could you argue they have somebody inside the White House that has a different job than simply running the National Security Council? So I could go off into way too much detail, but the charge that this office has gotten too big, valid. But the idea of how you right sizes is not based on somebody willy nilly going in and firing. And many of the people who are at the Director of National Intelligence office aren't full time employees. They may be delegated from CIA or from nsa. And some of that expertise you just don't want to lose. Maybe they should be moved back to their home agency. But having somebody with no knowledge of the intelligence community going in and just chopping people for whatever reason. My biggest fear is the people who's going to cut are probably the people who are willing to speak truth to power. And if you so intimidate the intelligence community that trying to keep their job is more important than telling speaking truth to power, particularly from a president like Trump that doesn't want to hear any contradictions, again, that makes our country less safe.
Aaron Maté
What's the status with his replacement, Jay Clayton. Is the Senate prepared to move on Clayton anytime soon? Is the President allowing him to show up? Where are we with that?
Senator Mark Warner
We don't know. I mean, I know I made some people on the left upset because I do think Clayton is respectable, responsible. I think he would respect the Constitution. I had a lot of tough questions for him. I wasn't going to guarantee vote, but the idea that, that, you know, responsible people in both parties were going to say we don't want pulte in there so let's actually speed up Clayton's process. And then the President starting to complain, well, gosh, the Republican Senate's moving too fast on his own nominee is again wacky beyond belief and unfortunately I don't think Jay Clayton knows. Is he just being held off for a while? Is he's nomination being withdrawn? We don't have an answer yet. And I know from hearing from Clayton, at least indirectly, that he doesn't have an answer either.
Aaron Maté
I want to ask you about Iran. Have you all been briefed about the memorandum understanding yet?
Senator Mark Warner
No. What we do know though, Aaron, is that even Trump, who we have to acknowledge is a pretty good salesman, is not going to be able to sell this is any kind of win for America. He can't sell it internationally, he can't sell it domestically. You know, IRAN after the 113, 14 day war of choice, arguably he's going to get $300 billion, who knows where. But a lot of that money could end up going to Hezbollah and other agents of Iran. Matter of fact, the agreement doesn't say anything about cutting back Iran's ballistic missiles or drone capabilities, which Trump says is one of the reasons for the war. It doesn't say anything about Trump or Iranian proxies like Hezbollah in Lebanon or the Houthis in Yemen or the Iranian backed groups in Iraq that still attack some of our facilities there. It says the Strait of Hormuz is going to be open, but as we said seen, Iran has still got a lot to say about that. And it says, well, Iran's not going to have a nuclear weapon. But that was the Iranian position before the war. So this is unfortunately a lose, lose, lose. And that is before you even factor in the roughly $60 billion just in gas prices. This has cost Americans beyond the loss of 13 of our soldiers and literally we've gone through almost all of our interceptor missiles in that region that could shoot down the Iranian drones or the Iranian missiles. So I think one of the reasons why we've not been briefed I don't think my Republican partners have been briefed either is because the deal, this deal makes the Obama jcpo, a deal which was not perfect by any means, look like, you know, the gold standard.
Aaron Maté
Based on what you've been briefed on behind the scenes, do you believe that Iranian capabilities have been degraded to the point where, as the President says, Iran's military is completely decimated?
Senator Mark Warner
Absolutely not. And you know, and again, I would say to your viewers, don't believe me. Look at the fact that, you know, leading in the last couple of weeks before the so called memorandum was signed, Iran kept shooting off missiles. They, they bombed. I think it was like in Bahrain, they bombed. Also I think one of the airports in, in Kuwait. We know they've got lots of drone capability. Who's actually been degraded, unfortunately, is America, Israel, Air and our Middle east allies who've had to use very expensive missile intercepts, oftentimes to shoot down Iranian drones, only cost 50 grand a piece. And the wild thing again here is the Ukrainians who, because they are literally the world's best at drone technology right now, they figured out a way, because the Iranians ship drones to Russia and then they use those Iranian drones to attack Ukraine. Ukraine has figured out a way to take down with Ukrainian counter drones at five grand a pop. And the United States didn't take up Ukraine's offer to use that technology. So the notion that they have been degraded to the point of no return, factually not true. The evidence points to that. And there have been some estimates publicly made that Iran's actually got about 60% of the missile capability left.
Aaron Maté
Do you believe, because there's been a lot of public reporting that Israel, the Netanyahu government, wants to keep America in this war. The Netanyahu, for personal reasons. Do you believe that the Israelis are going to essentially allow fighting with Hezbollah in Lebanon to stop, so much so that Iran will stay in this memorandum of understanding.
Senator Mark Warner
Listen, I don't know what to predict from the Israeli government. I know, you know, that Israel is right to defend itself, but boy, oh boy, this incursion into southern Lebanon, the greatest, I think since about the early 80s, is hugely destabilizing. And I don't, you know, I think there are many in Israel that are maybe rethinking putting 100% but entirely on Trump. Defense of Israel used to be more of a bipartisan issue. They've kind of gone all in on Trump. And the one thing I guess everyone should know, there is one thing that Donald Trump is loyal to and only one thing, and that's Donald Trump. So I don't have a lot of belief that Israel will actually end its battle in Lebanon. In the short term, I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I think we've seen even in the last 24 hours there was an Israeli strike.
Aaron Maté
Senator, thanks so much for taking the time.
