Hey Paul, thanks for taking my call. I never thought I'd be sitting around and hear Reese Davis. I went over to muscle shows, got me some tacos on Taco Tuesday. The place I like to go is in muscle shows. And then there he is. But hearing him say that Alabama seems to enjoy the fact that they're not expected to win a championship. Well, what'd you think about that?

[Paul Feinbaum]

Listen, Reese is an expert, so I take everything he says seriously. But I have a hard time believing that if Alabama is enjoying this role, it's not an Alabama Johnny that I'm familiar with.

[Caller Johnny B]

I agree, Paul. I mean, if you want to be the best, you want that target on your back and you want people gunning for you every week and you prepare for it. And then my other part, and then I want to address one of my fans that has really stepped his game up. But from Bash's call, you made a great point and I agree. In year three, I think DeBoer has, I'll give him credit for doing something. He has addressed the line, he's addressed the strength and he's addressed the running game. And so, you know, some people say give him four years. I think he didn't hear it. A mess. He inherited a pretty dang good football team. But I think this is going to be the year that we see can he make it or can he not? You know, are we going to give out more ice cream and some puppies and stuffed animals? Are we going to start playing Alabama football? You know, that's my, that's my thing. But the other one, and I'm, you know, I've always heard that imitation is most sincere form of flattery. And I hadn't been on in a while, but when I saw Squeals picture today and I see my picture up there right now, I'm thinking Well, you know what? He stalks me everywhere I go. He's worse than, like, when he was stalking Ms. Pat's feet and everything. But Squeal has changed into a Johnny B picture, you know, it's better than them carp he was catching and everything. But, you know, Squill, I'm proud that, you know, I know you feel like you're in fear to me and you're an old collar and. But it's fine. I'm not mad at you. It's just sort of a funny thing. But he also said one of the dumbest things I've ever heard anybody in my life say that the. The coaches are fine, the players have got to step their game up. That's the coach's responsibility. You know, that's why I'm on Deborah, and that's why I mentioned ice cream and puppies and stuffed animals. You don't want to jump in a foxhole in a war. And the guy sitting over there like the board does in press conference, just looking like he's a goose with his, you know, head chopped off, running around without anything. I want somebody that's got some fire and. And I want somebody that's got some leadership. So I agree with you 1 million percent that this is Alabama's year. And then I'm going to start another thing with Rusty from Gulf Shores. He calls in, we're going to start an over and under on how many times he says freaking every day. Thanks for taking my call. Paul, thank you for taking my call.

Let me ask you a couple questions here. And I know you'll be honest because you're such a good man. When you and Pat were sitting there talking about all of this, I mean, did he just kind of throw the. Throw it on the table, say, well, I got this idea and this is what we're going to do or should do. How did he present that to you?

[Paul Feinbaum]

Well, he felt like the show had a lot more potential than I did. And part of the reason is I was somewhat distracted at the time. I was still writing a newspaper column. I was dabbling in local tv, so he was really studying it. And I'll never forget he told me, and I'm not going to mention the person's name because the person is very prominent in media in the state of Alabama. And it was right after we had gotten to Montgomery. We were in Montgomery, and we were also in Gadsden. And this person that Pat ran into, said, is it serious that you guys are syndicating the show? And he said, yeah, we're starting to branch out. We're going to try to go the entire state of Alabama. He said, who in the world is going to listen to Paul Feinbaum's show outside of Birmingham? That's the craziest and stupidest thing I've ever heard, and I've never forgotten that. And by the way, I'm not sure I was in the majority of people who thought it would work. Pat was, though. It was his vision that got us that network, which ultimately led us to

the national syndication and several other comments. First off, when you syndicated, were you surprised how quickly everybody navigated to you?

[Paul Feinbaum]

Well, it was a struggle at times, but because you remember the show back at the beginning, it was not like it is today. It was a pretty general interest show. I. Man, and listen, I liked it better. I liked it that way because we could literally talk about anything that we were interested in, as opposed to the outline that we currently have.

And the phone lines were full every day just about whether.

Yeah.

[Paul Feinbaum]

And, you know, we. I mean, you were there at the beginning of that, so, I mean, we encourage people to have an identity. We tried not to get in the way. I mean, one of the great lines in the history of the show is you telling me, don't step on a good call, because that took some work and I think we perfected it.

But.

[Paul Feinbaum]

But there were not a lot of. There were not a lot of believers in it.

[Co-host or Interviewer]

I mean, so you and Pat are sitting there and y' all are probably not drinking anything other than maybe a Diet Pepsi and eating a kale sandwich.

[Paul Feinbaum]

Right, right.

[Co-host or Interviewer]

But, I mean, he had to give you an example when he said, you know, Paul, this is what we are doing, and this is why. Because people hate you so bad, you know, the bamboo's gonna have to come in and qualify. You know, they're gonna take over. I mean, it was really basic. Was it built around the Bama program, the fans?

[Caller Brian]

Yeah.

[Paul Feinbaum]

And really, as the show took off, it's.

It's.

[Paul Feinbaum]

I think we. We started syndicating it around 2001, somewhere in that range. It was really the worst couple. I mean, Alabama went through a terrible period. It was the Mike Shula era and when. When Tuberville won six straight. So it was, I think, the frustration. Yeah, it was the frustration of the Alabama fans and the gloating of the Auburn fans that really sent the show into orbit.

[Co-host or Interviewer]

Well, and the thing about it is that's When I came along, when Tuberville right there, she started all that winning and everything, and there wasn't but a handful of Auburn fans. And I tell you what, I was stomping through the woods and I was knocking everything down in sight. I meant to be the most hated man in the state of Alabama and. And you always find a way to up me and, you know, that's the way it is. But now, did you think that this day in time that this would ever morph in to. Every time you say something, you give an opinion because you're asked a question right there on the spot and you just have to talk and, and you give and it's obvious you're well studied and well read, and I would hope that a lot of people would understand that. I've been in the studio with you and there's. There was no laptop or anything. It was, you said headphones and a microphone. I mean, there was nothing personal of yours on the desk. I mean, you didn't have a picture of the family or a piece of paper or anything. You just talking off top of your head. But did you think that this day and time, it would ever turn into everybody watching every little nuance and having to critique it and then they know how to produce it, they know how to engineer it, they know how to direct it, and they know how to sell it?

[Caller JD]

No.

[Paul Feinbaum]

And by the way, I mean, I liked it a lot better when there was nothing on the desk because I'm more of a thinking host. Everything else is distracting now. And I know I never had any notes, even during an interview because I wanted to do the interview that way. You understand it. You've seen me enough times do it.

[Co-host or Interviewer]

Yeah, Yeah. I sat in with you one day and co hosted. There was me and another guy from Birmingham co hosting one day and. And I was sitting there next to you to my right and. And I was looking through a magazine real quietly. And I'll never forget it, you just took your left hand and you put it right in the middle of that magazine and you was looking at me like the Wicked Witch of the west. And I just politely closed it. And I mean, you could have. I understood the moment. I mean, that was a Nick Saban moment if there ever was one. You know, if you'd looked at him that way, he'd have backed down off of you on that TV show. He said, sorry, Paul, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt, but excuse me, excuse me, because you gave me a look that was about as firm As I was, I was shocked. And, you know, compared to the first time I met you, we was at the Christmas party, and you was kind of standing over in a corner and you was kind of standing like Jack Benny does with his arm, his elbow in his hand, and you was kind of looking at, you know, he's kind of looking all around because I figured you was waiting for the fight to break out or something. Right? Because there was a lot of tempered people on that program at that. At that party. But, yeah, I mean, people call in and criticize you, and they want to talk about the past, and they don't know who they're talking about the past with. I mean, you.

[Caller Brian]

You know the past.

You know it better than they do. And. But people are just so critical. And that's the one thing that's probably stayed in a good alignment since the day y' all started this program. What was the first couple days like when y' all went on the air?

[Caller or Guest]

Well,

[Paul Feinbaum]

I never wanted to be a radio guy. I mean, because frankly, I really did not like a lot of the people in the medium because I felt like they were way too performative. I wanted to be that hardcore newspaper guy and do it my way. I realized after a while that was not going to be possible. But, I mean, I didn't know what I was doing. I mean, it's as clear as day that I. It took me a long time. I still don't feel like I know what I'm doing, but thank goodness, you know, there are a lot. And Pat was really the key to it, as you know. But it. As we. As we advanced, the people around us became a lot broader and made the job a lot easier.

Well, I'll say this for all these people out here that are listening, when you were talking about that and you said you really didn't know and it's what it is today. I mean, you didn't say it is what it is. You didn't pick up a cliche that everybody else. I mean, that's a bumper sticker.

And you know, Sandy epitomized a professional athlete pole and a role model for. I think we can have today for all these athletes who are a bunch of crybabies. And I don't know if you ever had a chance to meet Sandy, Paul, but I have his autograph from 1965 at Old Bush, Old Sportsman's Park.

I mean he, they ain't giving enough time and I know they impatient and everything, but I mean when he comes rolling into Tennessee, he's going to be six zero. So, you know, and I don't think he's going to win out of there, but I mean he's going to go the playoff but, but the big deal is Georgia. This is Georgia's year. Paul, I honestly believe that Georgia's going to get it back this year.

We are doing great.

Yes. I would just, first of all, I would just like to say that If Alabama goes 6 and 6 this year, the fans are going to want him out. But the only way he will save his job is with that big buyout he has because of his new contract. And if Notre Dame goes 102 and the two losses are against Miami and Syracuse or Miami and North Carolina, they are going to have the same problem they did last year and they probably will find themselves out of the playoffs. And we're going to have to suffer through another year of their AD whining and complaining, talking about they should be in the playoffs. Paul, do you want to hear them? Their ad if they go 102 or 93 and barely miss the playoffs, why they could play it again because last year they didn't have a leg to stand on when they lost against Northern Illinois.

[Paul Feinbaum]

No, I mean, I thought, I thought. I mean, last year Notre Dame lost to Miami and Texas A and M. But first of all, I don't, I can't imagine Notre Dame doing any worse than 11 and 1. Maybe. I mean, the BYU game is a little bit problematic. So is Miami. But I think they. I agree with what Reese said earlier. They have one of the best teams in the country. Why don't we take a break? We need one quick break here. Plenty of time for you to get in. Final 30 minutes are straight ahead.

Yeah, yeah, he went to Tampa and he said he was going to visit his family up in.

Yeah, I saw him for a second, then I never saw him again.

Yeah, but I was getting concerned because I've not been a little depressed. You know, my mom's birthday is coming up tomorrow and everything. When you said Rackham to Brian, I truly wanted to rack him, okay? That's how desperate I was. That's how bad that call was. But, Brian, if you feel like you got me, you big fat Teletubby or whatever the hell a Teletubby is, I just know they're fat and ugly and they're very similar to you. And you're going to talk trash about A and M's football team. I just don't understand, Brian. We lost a team that went to the national championship game and almost beat Indiana. But anyways, Brian, we'll settle this whenever we come to Hillbilly Nation. Hopefully I'll see you there. Eating corn dogs, drinking soda pop or whatever the hell y' all call it in Oklahoma and digging through your grocery bag full of your belongings.

Do we really need to hear about the toilet? I mean, I want to hear a little bit about football, but, man, I tell you, that toilet thing really threw me for a loop. It kind of threw me off. LSU's gonna have a tough time. Lane Kiffin. Dwayne. Lane Kiffin. I'm looking. I would buy a ticket to when he goes back to his old school. I would buy a chicken. I don't like either one of those schools. And it's everywhere he goes, there's a trail of tears, of despair, of downtroddenness. It really is. So, Dwayne, I'm glad you have that excitement and I appreciate you because you are true friend. Because you don't care who coaches your team as long as LSU is there. So I can respect that. And I want to take you back, Paul, briefly. You know, it's right when you, when you're on that set and you're doing things. I've been there. I. You know, it's a weird thing when that light goes on and everybody in the world is watching you and you can't see anybody. Scott Richards, a prominent anchor, he did the same thing. There was a guy behind the camera eating cereal. Why are you eating cereal in the 10 o' clock news? I don't know. But when he heard that crutch was when that. When we went to break. I promise you, God had a connection. It's a good way because it's something about that focus and not killing somebody on the news that ain't really dead because you read it wrong. I mean, it's a. It's a real thing. So I do remember when I came from Michigan and I heard your show and, you know, I was quietly calling in under a assumed name named Janet. Tim Lennox was around all the. I would call all of y' all because I was also on the air. So I didn't want anybody.

[Paul Feinbaum]

I can't believe you, Sheila. I can't believe you mentioned Tim Lennox. I was in Fairhope on Saturday morning and I had breakfast with a couple of people, including John Montgomery, and he mentioned. He mentioned Tim working for Tim Lennox. And it's the first time I've heard that name in 25 years.

And, you know, we love some Tim Lennox. We'll leave it at that. If you don't know that's your famous word, we'll leave it there. Your famous word. We lived up there. I'm gonna leave it there with Tim Lentz because they know what I know and what you know combined. It might be a disaster. And last but not least, you're gonna. You're gonna live a long time.
