Mike Baker
It's Wednesday, the 18th of June. Welcome to the President's Daily Brief. I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears.
Co-Host
On the world stage. All right, let's get briefed.
Mike Baker
We'll start things off with a look.
Co-Host
At how the US Might be preparing.
Mike Baker
To enter the war between Israel and Iran. A sudden surge in military deployments suggests.
Co-Host
That something big could be on the table later in the show.
Mike Baker
Israel's campaign inside Iran isn't just targeting infrastructure.
Co-Host
It's gutting the supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei's.
Mike Baker
Inner circle, leaving him increasingly isolated.
Co-Host
Plus, the US Is pulling troops out of Syria again.
Mike Baker
Kurdish allies say the drawdown could open the door for a dangerous ISIS comeback.
Co-Host
And in today's Back of the Brief.
Mike Baker
The latest on that horrific Air India.
Co-Host
Crash that killed 270 individuals. Investigators are analyzing the black boxes to.
Mike Baker
Uncover what went wrong.
Co-Host
But first, today's PDB Spotlight.
Mike Baker
It's day six of the war between Israel and Iran. The Israeli air Force is dominating the skies over Tehran, striking deep into Iranian territory with seeming impunity. But now the speculation is shifting away from what Israel might do next and.
Co-Host
Toward whether the US Is preparing to step in directly. According to a report from Axios.
Mike Baker
President Trump told regional allies on Sunday that the US did not plan to get involved in the conflict unless Iran directly targeted American forces or personnel. That message reportedly echoed one that was sent just an hour before Israel launched.
Co-Host
Its opening strikes last Thursday, when the.
Mike Baker
White House informed partners in the region that Washington would not take part in the war. But that position may be shifting.
Co-Host
There are signs both in terms of.
Mike Baker
Rhetoric and military deployments that the Trump administration's calculus could be changing.
Co-Host
Whether it's due to new battlefield conditions or fresh intelligence regarding Iran's nuclear program.
Mike Baker
Something seems to be in motion. And here's what we know. A lot of resources are now being moved into position. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has reportedly.
Co-Host
Ordered the USS Nimitz carrier strike group.
Mike Baker
To redeploy to the Middle East.
Co-Host
Now The Nimitz can carry more than.
Mike Baker
60 aircraft and hosts a crew of roughly 5,000 sailors.
Co-Host
It's not just a symbol, it's a potent strike platform that can rapidly launch.
Mike Baker
Combat operations across the region.
Co-Host
Frankly, a carrier strike group is the.
Mike Baker
Ultimate display of US Military might. Meanwhile, US European Command has also moved in. Two Navy destroyers were deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea on Friday. Their mission is to bolster missile defense and be ready to intercept incoming threats.
Co-Host
And there's another key piece that tells us something big might be brewing, and.
Mike Baker
That would be refueling aircraft.
Co-Host
Now, the US Air Force has repositioned.
Mike Baker
A large number of aerial refueling tankers to forward operating bases in Europe. And that might sound on the surface, rather mundane, but these aircraft are essential for long range bombing runs, allowing fighters and bombers to stay airborne for extended missions.
Co-Host
If you're planning to strike a fortified target deep in Iran, well, you need tankers.
Mike Baker
Which brings us to the real crux of this story. But what exactly would US Military assistance look like if Trump gave the green light? Right now, much of the speculation focuses on one site, and that would be, of course, Fordo. Located near the city of Qom, about 90 miles or so south of Tehran, Fordo is an underground nuclear enrichment facility dug into the side of a mountain and shielded by layers of rock and reinforced concrete.
Co-Host
Originally a secret site, its existence was.
Mike Baker
Made public in 2009. It houses space for approximately 3,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges. And because of its location, Fordo is a particularly hard nut to crack for the Israeli Air Force. Israel does have so called bunker buster bombs in its arsenal, like the American made GBU 28. But those are limited in what they can penetrate. When it comes to deeply fortified subterranean.
Co-Host
Sites like Fordo, well, there's really only.
Mike Baker
One weapon designed for the job.
Co-Host
That would be the GBU 57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, often shortened to MOP because nobody loves an acronym like the US.
Mike Baker
Military loves an acronym. It's a 30,000 pound Munster, built specifically to drill through hardened bunkers. Now, if you're asking yourself, why don't.
Co-Host
We just hand the bomb over to Israel?
Mike Baker
Well, these bombs are so big that frankly, Israel doesn't even have the aircraft needed to carry them.
Co-Host
A MOP can only be deployed from.
Mike Baker
A B2 or a B52 bomber.
Co-Host
Israel doesn't have either.
Mike Baker
So even if Washington gave Tel Aviv.
Co-Host
The bombs, they'd have no way to.
Mike Baker
Deliver them on target. That's why any mission to destroy Fordo.
Co-Host
With a MOP would have to be.
Mike Baker
Carried out by the US Directly.
Co-Host
There could be other options, perhaps like.
Mike Baker
A special operations raid.
Co-Host
Now, that's possible, but highly unlikely.
Mike Baker
Fordo isn't just deep underground. It's heavily guarded and situated in the heart of Iran. You'd be asking US or allied special.
Co-Host
Forces to sneak deep into hostile territory.
Mike Baker
Locate the fortified facility, sabotage it from.
Co-Host
Within, and then escape. It's not impossible, of course, but it's extremely high risk.
Mike Baker
And Fordo isn't the only site under scrutiny. Let's not forget, of course, Natanz. Now, that's Iran's other major nuclear enrichment site.
Co-Host
It's located roughly 150 miles south of Tehran, near Kashan, and was one of.
Mike Baker
The first targets struck by Israel last.
Co-Host
Week, according to Rafael Grossi. He's head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Mike Baker
While surface structures at Natanz were damaged.
Co-Host
Or destroyed, the most sensitive parts of the facility, its underground Cascade halls, well, they remain intact.
Mike Baker
Those halls are where Iran runs both its test and production scale uranium enrichment systems.
Co-Host
They're heavily reinforced, and if Israel's airstrikes didn't reach them, they may require bunker.
Mike Baker
Busting strikes of their own. So while the Trump administration may not.
Co-Host
Yet be officially in the war, the.
Mike Baker
Pieces on the chessboard are being moved. Carrier groups, destroyers, refueling aircraft, massive bunker busting bombs that only Washington can drop.
Co-Host
If the White House changes its posture.
Mike Baker
Either because of a direct Iranian provocation.
Co-Host
Or because or a perceived nuclear threat.
Mike Baker
We may soon see the US Play a much more active role in shaping what comes next.
Co-Host
All right, coming up next, Israel is hollowing out Khamenei's inner circle, and the US Is pulling troops from Syria, while Kurdish allies at the same time fear.
Mike Baker
ISIS could rise again.
Co-Host
I'll be right back.

In an ominous statement on Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said, quote, I.
Mike Baker
Warned the Iranian dictator against continuing to commit war crimes and launching missiles at Israeli civilians. He would do well to remember the fate of the dictator in the country neighboring Iran who who chose this same path against Israel, end quote.
Co-Host
Now President Trump echoed that message later on Tuesday, issuing a not so thinly veiled threat against Khamenei as he demanded.
Mike Baker
Iran's, quote, unconditional surrender. Now, Trump said, quote, we know exactly where the so called Supreme Leader is hiding. He's an easy target but is safe there. We're not going to take him out, at least not for now.
Co-Host
But we don't want missiles shot at civilians, we don't want or American soldiers.
Mike Baker
Trump added, quote, our patience is wearing thin, end quote.
Co-Host
According to five Iranian sources that spoke exclusively to Reuters on Tuesday, Khamenei is.
Mike Baker
Deeply concerned that his battered military could make a costly strategic error that imperils.
Co-Host
His hold on power, particularly due to.
Mike Baker
The loss of his regime's top military leaders in Israeli airstrikes.

In short order, Israel has killed the.

Khamenei's son is seen by some insiders.

Mike Baker
Particularly due to his close ties to the irgc.
Co-Host
Now we also can't forget that Khamenei is uniquely isolated regionally due to the.
Mike Baker
Destruction of his so called axis of resistance over the past year and a half by Israel. His close personal ally in Lebanon, former.
Co-Host
Chief of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah, was killed last September.
Mike Baker
His other close regional ally, former Syrian President Assad, was overthrown by rebels in December.

Okay, shifting to Syria, the American footprint.

Pdb, the Syrian dictator Assad was ousted in December, of course, by Islamist rebels, ending more than a decade of civil war and triggering a collapse of the regime's centralized control. In the power vacuum that followed there, the newly formed transitional government has struggled to rein in extremist groups, and ISIS appears to be exploiting the chaos. According to SDF sources, ISIS cells have reactivated in several cities, including the capital of Damascus.

The President's Daily Brief – June 18, 2025
Hosted by Mike Baker
On June 18, 2025, The President's Daily Brief hosted by former CIA Operations Officer Mike Baker delves into escalating tensions in the Middle East, specifically focusing on the potential for U.S. military involvement in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The episode also examines the strategic implications of the U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria and the growing concerns among Kurdish allies about a possible resurgence of ISIS.
Mike Baker opens the discussion by highlighting a significant surge in U.S. military deployments, signaling a possible escalation in the Israel-Iran war. He states, "There’s a lot of movement happening on the chessboard, with carrier groups, destroyers, refueling aircraft, and massive bunker-busting bombs that only Washington can drop" (07:05).
The Co-Host emphasizes the strategic positioning of these military assets, suggesting that these deployments are not merely symbolic but serve as potent strike platforms capable of rapid combat operations across the region (03:05).
Redeployment of USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group: Ordered by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the USS Nimitz, with its 60 aircraft and a crew of approximately 5,000 sailors, represents a formidable force ready to project power at a moment’s notice (02:55).
Deployment of Navy Destroyers: Two destroyers have been sent to the Eastern Mediterranean to bolster missile defense systems and prepare to intercept incoming threats (03:32).
Repositioning of Aerial Refueling Tankers: The U.S. Air Force has moved a large number of tankers to forward bases in Europe, essential for sustaining long-range bombing missions deep within Iranian territory (03:39).
Notable Quote: "The pieces on the chessboard are being moved. Carrier groups, destroyers, refueling aircraft, massive bunker-busting bombs that only Washington can drop." – Mike Baker (07:05)
The spotlight shifts to the highly fortified Fordo nuclear enrichment facility near Qom, Iran. Mike Baker explains the challenges Israel faces in targeting such a deeply embedded site, emphasizing that only the U.S. possesses the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) capable of breaching Fordo’s reinforced structures (04:03).
Co-Host discusses the logistical hurdles Israel would encounter if tasked with deploying a MOP, noting that Israel lacks the necessary aircraft like the B-2 or B-52 bombers to deliver these massive bombs (05:23).
MOP Deployment: Any mission to destroy Fordo with a MOP would necessitate direct U.S. involvement, highlighting the unique role the U.S. plays in potential military actions against Iran’s nuclear capabilities (05:47).
Special Operations Raids: While theoretically possible, such missions are deemed highly unlikely due to the extreme risks involved in infiltrating and sabotaging a facility like Fordo (05:52).
Notable Quote: "Fordo isn't just deep underground. It's heavily guarded and situated in the heart of Iran. You’d be asking US or allied special forces to sneak deep into hostile territory, locate the fortified facility, sabotage it from within, and then escape." – Mike Baker (05:03)
The Co-Host and Mike Baker discuss the recent reduction of U.S. forces in Syria, highlighting the strategic retreat from multiple bases and the potential consequences for regional stability. The drawdown has left Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) vulnerable, raising fears of a resurgence of ISIS activities.
Mike Baker notes, "The Trump administration's plan is to consolidate forces at a single remaining base, slashing troop levels from roughly 2,000 to 500" (15:02), effectively reducing the number of American bases in Syria from eight to one.
Increased ISIS Activity: With fewer U.S. troops on the ground, ISIS has been emboldened, reactivating cells in major cities and seizing weapons from abandoned depots (16:20).
SDF Vulnerability: The SDF commander warns that the limited U.S. presence is insufficient to contain the expanding threat of ISIS, potentially fracturing the fragile security order in northeast Syria (15:23).
Notable Quote: "The presence of only a few hundred US troops on a single base would be not enough to contain the expanding threat of ISIS." – SDF Commander (15:11)
The episode further examines the ramifications of Israel's targeted strikes on Iran’s military leadership, significantly isolating Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Co-Host details how the elimination of key military figures has left Khamenei reliant on a smaller cadre of advisors, including his son, who is perceived as a potential successor due to his close ties with the IRGC (13:08).
Mike Baker explains, "Khamenei is deeply concerned that his battered military could make a costly strategic error that imperils his regime's grip on power." (12:25)
