Foreign It's Tuesday 8th July. Welcome to the PDB Afternoon Bulletin. I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage. All right, let's get briefed. First up, news out of Texas, but not related to the tragic Fourth of July weekend flooding. Nearly a dozen anti ICE rioters were arrested on July 4th for staging a violent ambush on an ICE detention facility with the intent to kill federal officers. The incident comes as assaults on ICE agents nationwide surge by 700%. Later in the show, President Trump appears to have lost all patience with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, telling reporters Monday evening that the US Will be restarting arms shipments to Ukraine to help defend against the Kremlin's ongoing aggression. But first, today's afternoon spotlight as anti ICE rhetoric intensifies across the country amid the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, violent attacks on migrant facilities and federal agents are surging. State and federal officials revealed Monday that they thwarted a terrorist attack on an ICE detention center in Alvarado, Texas. On the 4th of July. As the nation celebrated Independence Day. Nearly a dozen individuals descended on the Prairieland detention facility, engaging in what officials called a quote, planned ambush with the intent to kill ICE corrections officers. According to a report from ABC News, the attackers, dressed in black military style clothing, arrived at the site just before 11pm and began shooting fireworks at the building and engaging in other acts of vandalism. But the situation took a more violent turn as local police officers arrived on the scene. One of the individuals, armed with a gun, shot a responding officer in the neck. Another opened fire on the detention facility, firing 20 to 30 rounds at federal corrections officers before fleeing with the rest of the assailants, but they did not get far. Authorities said they were able to quickly apprehend the perpetrators of the attack, arresting all 10 and charging them with attempted murder of a federal officer. The officer that was shot is expected to make a full recovery and no one else was injured in the attack. But given the suspected plans of the attackers, the incident could have easily turned deadly. At a press conference on Monday, authorities said one of the suspects that fled the scene was captured carrying a large magazine Clip and kevlar vests. He told officers that he had met some people online. Oh, that's nice. Who wanted to, quote, make a little noise at the detention center. In total, authorities seized 12 sets of body armor, fireworks, weapons and cell phones during several searches executed over the weekend. They also found two AR15s nearby the facility, which the suspects likely ditched as they fled the scene. Additionally, officials seized a flag saying, quote, resist fascism, fight oligarchy. Oh, that's very original. And flyers saying, fight ICE terror with class war. Free all political prisoners, end quote. The U.S. attorney's office has charged all 10 individuals with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer, as well as three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. Now, this was not an isolated incident. On Monday morning, a 27 year old man carrying a rifle and tactical gear opened fire on a border patrol facility in McAllen, Texas. That's near the U. S. Mexico border. The suspect fired several dozen rounds at the Border patrol building and agents inside before agents returned fire, killing him. A spokesman for the Department of homeland security said the two McAllen police officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured during the attack. All three were taken to a local hospital where they're being treated for their wounds. Officials later said they are all expected to make a full recovery. The shooter was linked to an address in Michigan. An official motive has not yet been released, and officials with the FBI said the investigation remains ongoing. But inside the shooter's vehicle, investigators found another rifle, ammunition and what they described as other assaultive weapons. The shooter had also spray painted the Latin phrase cordis die on the driver's side door, which translates to day of the heart. Officials said the phrase is popular with players of the video game call of duty. Black Ops 2, where Cordis die is a revolutionary movement that seeks to topple capitalist governments. Following the shooting, U. S. Border czar Tom homan criticized Democrat lawmakers for their increasingly extreme rhetoric aimed at ICE agents. He pointed to recent remarks by congresswoman Pramala Jayapal, who called ICE a, quote, terrorist force, and house minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, who likened ICE to the Gestapo, the Nazis secret police, of course. Hoban said Monday, quote, unless we stop hateful rhetoric against ICE border patrol comparing them to Nazis, there's going to be more loss of life. They're simply enforcing laws that Congress enacted, end quote. Nationwide, violence against federal immigration officers has dramatically surged, according to a report from USA Today. According to the White House, there's been a roughly 700% increase across the country in violent assaults on federal immigration agents working to carry out their duties. Up next, President Trump reverses course, confirming Monday evening that the US Will be restarting arms shipments to Ukraine. I'll be right back. Hey, Mike Baker here. Welcome back to the afternoon bulletin. Just days after a reportedly fruitless phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, President Trump confirmed late Monday night that the US Is restarting arms shipments to Ukraine. Speaking from the White House during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Trump told reporters that Kyiv is getting hit very hard. We're going to have to send more weapons. The remarks are the clearest acknowledgment yet that Trump is all but done believing that negotiations alone can compel Russia to back down. The shift follows a tense stretch during which the Pentagon last month halted deliveries of patriot Interceptors and AIM 120 missiles, Stinger Defense missiles and other critical munitions, blindsiding officials in Kiev and alarming some inside Trump's own national security circle. The freeze, as we reported here on the bdp, was designed to review US Stockpiles following the strikes on the Houthis in Yemen earlier this year and the June strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. Now, well, that pause appears to be over. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the reversal in a statement saying, quote, at President Trump's direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace, end quote. As we discussed this week, Trump relayed a similar message to Ukrainian President Zelensky during a phone call on Friday. According to aides familiar with the conversation, Trump reassured Kiev that the delay was temporary and not a pivot away from Ukraine altogether. He pledged to send, quote, as much military aid as we can spare. Zelensky who has spent the past few months sounding the alarm over dwindling air defenses, struck an optimistic tone after that call. He said in a national address, quote, this was probably the best conversation in all this time, adding, quote, I'm grateful for the readiness to help. But the resumption of aid was also shaped by a far more strained exchange between Trump and Putin. Speaking afterward, Trump described the call as very disappointing, telling reporters he pressed Putin to end the war but made little headway. Just hours later, Russia launched what officials in Kyiv say was its largest aerial assault of the war, targeting Kyiv and multiple cities in a coordinated seven hour barrage. While Ukraine's air defenses intercepted many of the drones and missiles, several struck civilian infrastructure. The attack underscored Ukraine's desperate need for advanced air defense systems, particularly Patriot batteries, which have become the backbone of Kyiv's ability to fend off Russian missiles. Sources familiar with internal deliberations report that the National Security Council convened today to finalize the latest arms package. The meeting caps off weeks of debate inside the administration and over how far to go in resupplying Ukraine without triggering further Russian aggression. The details of the arms package remain unclear. Since the 2022 invasion, Washington has delivered nearly $67 billion in military aid to Ukraine. That's according to a March 2025 State Department fact sheet. The last major package was approved in December under the Biden administration upon taking office in January. Trump has allowed most of those shipments to continue, though with sporadic delays tied to foreign policy recalibrations. Trump's decision to reopen the weapons pipeline suggests he sees no near term diplomatic off ramp and recognizes that withholding aid might only deepen Ukraine's vulnerability and further embolden Putin. The President's Daily Brief - Afternoon Bulletin Summary
Episode: July 8th, 2025
Host: Mike Baker
In today’s President's Daily Brief Afternoon Bulletin, hosted by former CIA Operations Officer Mike Baker, the focus centers on two critical issues: the thwarted anti-ICE terror attacks in Texas and President Trump's announcement to resume arms shipments to Ukraine amidst escalating tensions with Russia.
Incident Overview
On July 4th, amidst the nation's Independence Day celebrations, nearly a dozen anti-ICE rioters were apprehended for their role in a planned violent ambush targeting an ICE detention facility in Alvarado, Texas. The attackers intended to kill federal officers, marking a significant uptick in assaults on ICE agents nationwide, which have surged by 700% according to recent reports.
Details of the Attack
At approximately 11:00 PM, the assailants, clad in black military-style attire, initiated their assault by launching fireworks and vandalizing the Prairieland detention facility. The situation escalated when local police responded. One attacker fired a gunshot at a responding officer's neck, while another discharged 20 to 30 rounds at federal corrections officers before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, the swift response led to the arrest of all 10 suspects, who now face charges including attempted murder of a federal officer.
Recovered Evidence
Authorities conducted extensive searches over the weekend, seizing 12 sets of body armor, fireworks, weapons, and cell phones. Additionally, two AR15 rifles were found near the facility, likely abandoned by the suspects during their retreat. Among the recovered items were a flag emblazoned with “Resist Fascism, Fight Oligarchy” and flyers urging the public to “Fight ICE terror with class war. Free all political prisoners.”
Quotes from Authorities
Gunfire Incident in McAllen
Earlier on the same day, a 27-year-old man armed with a rifle attacked a border patrol facility in McAllen, Texas. The assailant fired several dozen rounds before being neutralized by responding agents. Three officers were injured but are expected to recover fully. Investigations linked the shooter to a Michigan address, uncovering additional weapons and spray-painted graffiti referencing the video game "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" and its associated revolutionary themes.
Political Repercussions
U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan criticized Democratic lawmakers for their "increasingly extreme rhetoric" against ICE agents. Highlighting remarks by Congresswoman Pramala Jayapal and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Homan emphasized the need to cease "hateful rhetoric" to prevent further loss of life.
Nationwide Surge in Violence
A USA Today report corroborates a 700% increase in violent assaults on federal immigration agents nationwide, underscoring the severity of the situation and the challenges faced by federal authorities in maintaining law and order.
Trump's Announcement
In a decisive policy shift, President Trump confirmed the resumption of arms shipments to Ukraine during a press conference held at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. This move signifies Trump's frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Background and Context
Previously, the Pentagon had halted deliveries of critical munitions, including Patriot Interceptors and AIM-120 missiles, to Ukraine. This pause was intended to reassess U.S. stockpiles following strikes on the Houthis in Yemen and Iran's nuclear facilities. The recent decision to resume shipments indicates a strategic shift, recognizing that continuing arms support is essential for Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Official Statements
Diplomatic Interactions
During a phone call on Friday, President Trump reassured Ukrainian President Zelensky of continued U.S. support, despite the temporary delay in arms shipments. Zelensky expressed optimism post-conversation, stating it was "probably the best conversation in all this time" and appreciated the "readiness to help."
Escalation with Russia
Following a disappointing call between Trump and Putin, Russia launched its largest aerial assault against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, lasting seven hours. While Ukraine's air defenses intercepted many threats, some missiles struck civilian infrastructure, highlighting the urgent need for advanced air defense systems like the Patriot batteries.
Internal Deliberations
Sources indicate that the National Security Council convened to finalize the latest arms package, reflecting ongoing debates within the administration about the extent of support for Ukraine without provoking further Russian aggression. To date, the U.S. has provided nearly $67 billion in military aid to Ukraine since the 2022 invasion, with the most recent major package approved in December under the Biden administration.
Strategic Implications
President Trump's decision suggests an acknowledgment that diplomatic efforts alone may not compel Russia to cease its aggression. By resuming arms shipments, the administration aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities, deter further Russian advances, and ensure stability in the region.
Today's bulletin underscores the escalating domestic tensions surrounding ICE enforcement and the international implications of U.S. foreign policy decisions. The thwarted terror attacks in Texas highlight the growing volatility and hostile rhetoric against federal authorities, while the resumption of arms shipments to Ukraine marks a critical juncture in the U.S.-Russia conflict, reaffirming America's commitment to its allies and the fight against aggression.
