It's Tuesday, the 19th of May. Welcome to the PDB Afternoon Bulletin. I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage. All right, let's get briefed. First up, Cuba's president warns of a possible, quote, bloodbath if the US Attacks the island just one day after intelligence reports revealed Havana's growing military drone arsenal. Later in the show, new details emerge after three people are killed in a shooting at the Islamic center of San Diego. The two teenage suspect shooters reportedly killed themselves following the attack on the center. Investigators are treating the shootings as a hate crime. But first, today's afternoon spotlight. Tensions between Washington and Havana are escalating rapidly after Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel warned that any US Military action against the island would trigger what he described as a, quote, bloodbath with incalculable consequences, end quote. The warning comes just one day after new intelligence indicated that Cuba has quietly acquired more than 300 military drones, with US officials reportedly concerned that those drones could eventually be used to target Guantanamo Bay or Key west or American naval vessels operating in the region. According to Axios, classified intelligence assessments describe Cuba's drone arsenal as a, quote, growing threat, particularly as relations between the Trump administration and the Communist government continue to deteriorate. In a statement posted Monday on social media, Diaz Canel accused the US of threatening military aggression against Cuba, calling it an international crime. He insisted Cuba has no plans to attack the US While also warning that the island has what he described as the, quote, absolute right to defend itself. On Monday, the Trump administration imposed a sweeping new round of sanctions targeting senior Cuban officials, including ministers tied to communications, energy, justice, and the armed forces. The sanctions also targeted several major security institutions, including including Cuba's Ministry of Interior, the National Revolutionary Police, and the country's intelligence apparatus. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures were aimed at weakening what he described as the regime's ability to suppress the Cuban people while also supporting foreign intelligence and military operations tied to adversarial governments. And that appears to be a major concern for the administration right now. As we reported last week, CIA Director John Radcliffe traveled to Havana personally carrying a message from President Trump demanding major changes from the Cuban government, including shutting down Chinese and Russian listening posts operating on the island. At the same time, US Surveillance flights around Cuba have reportedly intensified, while the Justice Department is expected to pursue a criminal indictment against former Cuban leader Raul Castro over the 1996 shootdown of civilian aircraft that were operated by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue. Meanwhile, the economic situation inside Cuba is rapidly deteriorating. Years of dysfunction inside the communist system, along with a long standing sanctions regime, have now collided with mounting US Pressure and of course, the loss of Venezuela as the island's primary benefactor. Venezuela, of course, was the island's primary energy supplier. The result has been catastrophic. Cuban officials announced last week that the country has effectively run out of oil and diesel fuel. Rolling blackouts now stretch as long as 22 hours per day in some parts of the island, including Havana. Foreign companies are also beginning to pull out. Major international shipping firms have reportedly suspended cargo bookings to Cuba following new U.S. measures, while Canadian mining giant Sherrod International is announced that it is withdrawing from joint ventures on the island. The worsening shortages have fueled growing unrest among ordinary Cubans already struggling with food shortages, fuel scarcity and a collapsing electrical grid. And all of this, of course, is happening just 90 miles off the coast of Florida. And that's part of what makes this situation so significant, of course. For decades, Cuba was largely viewed in Washington as a stagnant Cold War relic, isolated, economically broken, but strategically limited but for its ties with Russia and China. Now, however, U.S. officials increasingly appear to view the island differently, not simply as a failing communist state, but as a potential security platform for Chinese and Russian intelligence operations operating close to the American mainland. Well, that is absolutely nothing new. To be fair, that's been true since Fidel Castro took over in 1959. The former Soviet Union's KGB built the Cuban regime's intelligence service over the years. And the primary reason that Russia and China are heavily involved with Cuba is because it sits 90 miles off the US coastline. So again, it's not some new development. Coming up next, investigators search for answers after three people are murdered in a shooting at the Islamic center of San Diego. I'll be right back.

welcome back to the PDB Afternoon Bulletin. Three victims and the two suspect shooters are dead following a shooting at the Islamic center of San Diego. Investigators are treating this as an act of anti Muslim violence. The attack was carried out by two armed teenagers who were already being sought by police before the shooting began. According to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wall, the mother of one of the teenage suspects contacted authorities Monday morning after her son allegedly left home in what was described as a suicidal. State police say the two suspects took three firearms, a vehicle belonging to the suspect's mother, and they were dressed in camouflage. Dispatch audio later captured officers searching across the city for what were described as two armed white males carrying a handgun, shotgun and rifle while police tracked the vehicle using license plate recognition systems. Then, while officers were still actively searching for the suspects, emergency calls suddenly began pouring in reporting an active shooter at the Islamic center of San Diego. That's the largest mosque in the county. Police say officers arrived within minutes and encountered what Chief Wall described as a, quote, extremely chaotic scene. Three victims were found dead outside almost immediately as officers rushed to determine whether the gunman was still moving through the complex. The Islamic center also houses a school serving young children from pre kindergarten through third grade. Video from the scene later showed adults escorting children out of the building hand in hand as heavily armed officers cleared rooms across the complex. According to police, between 50 and 100 officers ultimately responded as teams moved room by room securing the facility. Authorities later confirmed no officers fired their weapons during the operation. At the same time, violence was still unfolding nearby. Investigators say additional gunfire erupted several blocks away after a landscaper was reportedly shot at, though he was not injured. The two suspects were later found dead inside a vehicle near the Islamic center from what authorities believe were self inflicted gunshot wounds. Federal and local officials later identified the suspects as 17 year old Kane Clark and 18 year old Caleb Vazquez. Now investigators are still officially working to determine motive, but several details emerging from the investigation are increasingly pushing authorities toward treating the attack as targeted anti Muslim violence. According to multiple law enforcement officials, one of the suspects allegedly left behind writings centered around racial pride, while hate speech was reportedly found written on one of the firearms used in the attack. Chief Wall said investigators did not uncover any direct threat, specifically naming the Islamic center beforehand, but described material recovered from the suspects as, quote, general hate kind of speech. Another major part of the story centers around the actions of the mosque's security guard, Amin Abdullah. Now, community leaders say Abdullah was among those killed while attempting to protect people inside the center during the attack, and according to police, his actions likely prevented the death toll from climbing even higher. Chief Wall described Abdullah's actions as heroic, saying, quote, undoubtedly he saved lives today. The Islamic center later described him as a courageous man who sacrificed himself for the safety of others while mourning the loss of what it called several pillars of the local community. Investigators are now combing through surveillance footage, writings, digital evidence and utilizing search warrants to try to better understand how this tragedy unfolded and why.
