First up, Israel's top general drops a bombshell at a weekend cabinet meeting. Moving forward with the offensive into Gaza City, he said, and you're committing yourself to a long term occupation and governance of the entire enclave. Later in the show, a new report says terror groups and rogue regimes around the globe are hijacking supplies meant for civilians, prolonging wars in a variety of crisis zones. I'll have those details. But first, today's afternoon spotlight. A heated meeting inside Israel's security cabinet ended with a warning for Prime Minister Netanyahu and his coalition government this weekend. Israel's chief of staff said that the current trajectory of the war will see Gaza placed under military govern, putting Israel on course for a full occupation of the Strip indefinitely. Reports from Hebrew media say Sunday night's cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv stretched for nearly six hours, with their focus almost entirely on the Israel Defense Force's plan to seize full control of Gaza City. But what grabbed headlines wasn't the length of the meeting or even the plan itself. It was the explicit warning from Major General Eyal Zamir, IDF's Chief of Staff. Now, according to multiple leaks, Zamir told the ministers directly, quote, you are heading to a military government. Your plan is leading us there. Understand the implications, end quote. He argued that conquering Gaza City and then moving into central refugee camps would leave Israel with no choice but to govern the Strip outright. In other words, a full occupation with Israeli soldiers running day to day administration for millions of Palestinians. Zamir said there's no coherent exit strategy, just a path deeper into a quagmire. Apparently, his words didn't land well with the cabinet's far right ministers. Settlements Minister Orit Strok accused him of cowardice, quoting the Bible's warning about fearful soldiers, which of course is an easy quote if you're not a soldier. The finance minister as well as the national security minister dismissed the idea of a deal altogether, urging Netanyahu to stay the course and crush Hamas completely. Netanyahu himself shut the door on even discussing the hostage ceasefire framework that Hamas claims to have accepted. That deal, offering the release of 10 live hostages, 18 bodies and a 60 day ceasefire in exchange for prisoner releases was supported by Zemir and a handful of cabinet members. But Netanyahu waved it off, telling those at the meeting that it is not on the table. He added that President Trump had personally urged him not to accept any partial deals, warning that they'd become endless, quote salami slices of concessions. Instead, Trump reportedly told him, forget the partial deals, go in with full force and finish this. The prime minister echoed that view in the room, arguing that pulling back now would squander Israel's hard won military gains and invite crushing international pressure. Netanyahu told the cabinet if Hamas can trade hostages for concessions, Israel will be seen as brought to its knees. Still, cracks in the strategy are widening. Both the foreign minister and the intelligence minister join Zamir in supporting a deal, warning that Israel's diplomatic position is weakening as more Western countries recognize a Palestinian state. Outside the Cabinet, the Hostage Families Forum accused Netanyahu of sacrificing the captives for his own political survival. Meanwhile, warnings about Gaza turning into Israel's Vietnam are growing louder. Likud Minister David Amsalon reportedly used that very phrase in the meeting. And yet the military continues preparing for Operation Gideon's Chariots to expand, putting more of Gaza under Israeli control. So what's next? Well, if the IDF chief is right, a military occupation, whether officially declared or not, could stretch for months or even years, with no clear plan for the day after. This scenario could be a nightmare for Israel. Governing Gaza's 2 million residents would saddle the IDF with the burdens of policing, providing basic services, and confronting a hostile civilian population where terrorists can melt back into the streets. It would drain manpower and resources, bog down soldiers in endless patrols and checkpoints, and leave Israel exposed to accusations of colonial rule from the international community. The longer troops stay, the higher the risks of insurgency, of mounting casualties and of global isolation. And yet, that may be exactly where Israel is heading. Netanyahu insists that only the total defeat of Hamas will guarantee security. But without a credible exit plan, the victory he seeks could trap Israel in a war without end. Whether by design or by default, Israel's government now faces a fateful choice strike a deal that risks leaving Hamas standing or push forward into Gaza and risk being ensnared in an occupation that it has repeatedly said it doesn't want. All right, coming up next, a study reveals how food, fuel and medicine meant for civilians ends up in the hands of terrorists and tyrants, fueling conflicts across the globe. I'll be right back. A new study charges that the UN and aid groups turned a blind eye as billions in humanitarian relief was siphoned off by terrorists and authoritarian regimes to bankroll war chests. The findings confirm what we've tracked and referenced here on the pdb. Diversion of aid isn't an aberration, but a systematic pattern. Researchers Dr. Netta Barak Cohen of Hebrew University and Dr. Jonathan Boxman write that UN agencies and international NGOs have been, quote, looking the other way as aid was diverted across multiple war zones. The report opens in Africa as Somalia's aid network was gutted by cartel transport fees, so called ghost camps, which are fictitious settlements created to siphon off aid and local gatekeepers. The net result? Only 12 to 17% of assistance actually reaches civilians. A 2023 internal UN report, stamped strictly confidential revealed that displaced Somalis were coerced by militias into handing over half their stipends under threat of eviction, arrest or worse. Ethiopia tells a similar story. World food program, or WFP, staff allegedly stood by as military personnel looted 30 metric tons of grain, later milled into flour for soldiers until USAID intervened and suspended aid. In Sudan, warring factions stole aid shipments while the wfp, fearful of expulsion, looked the other way. Two senior officials were later investigated for fraud and concealment in the process, with the agency conceding its inspector general was probing misconduct. Turning to the Middle east, former Syrian dictator Assad manipulated the terms of relief, siphoning off roughly 51% through currency schemes and blocking deliveries to opposition zones in Syria. The diversion of aid meant for civilians helped fund Assad's war of annihilation against his enemies and opposition in Yemen. While the un claimed just 1% of aid went missing, the study found that as much as 60% of intended beneficiaries never received it. Supplies instead diverted to Houthi loyalists or resold for the Iran proxy's benefit. The situation in South Asia has repeatedly been no different. Roughly 40% of aid to Afghanistan was skimmed by the Taliban through so called taxes, medical demands and payroll infiltration. International supervisors who uncovered the thefts often chose not to report them. A senior fellow at the Washington based think tank foundation for Defense of Democracies warned that the true diversion figures are likely higher given the Taliban's skill at embedding themselves inside of aid operations. But the report reserves its harshest language for UNRWA, the UN's Palestinian relief arm. Calling it a streamlined aid diversion operation and enjoying a unique level of international immunity and freedom from accountability, end quote. The UN's Humanitarian Coordination Office insisted it had no evidence of, quote, systematic aid diversion to Hamas. Barak and Cohen countered that this very denial was emblematic of the UN's habit of suppressing, not confronting the issue. In Gaza, data shows 88% of aid between May and August of this year alone failed to reach its destination. An Israeli military official told Fox News that the issue isn't just theft, but Hamas monetizing aid to bankroll its terror aims. The official stated, they're controlling the aid, selling it, getting money out of it, paying salaries and recruiting youngsters to fight against Israel. In this way, the official warned, aid agencies are not alleviating the war, but prolonging it. Taken together, the findings paint a rather depressing picture, not just of squandered resources, but of international institutions becoming unwitting accomplices to terror groups, militias and dictatorships feeding the very wars and atrocities that the aid was meant to alleviate. Host: Mike Baker (The First TV)
Episode: IDF Chief Warns Netanyahu: You’re Headed To A ‘Military Government’
Date: September 2, 2025
This episode dives deep into two urgent global issues:
Israel’s Deepening Crisis in Gaza: The head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) warns Prime Minister Netanyahu and his cabinet that their military strategy in Gaza is leading Israel towards an indefinite occupation—potentially creating their own "Vietnam" scenario.
Global Aid Diversion Scandal: A new study reveals systemic diversion of international humanitarian aid by terror organizations and authoritarian regimes, fueling global conflicts rather than alleviating them.
Mike Baker walks listeners through high-level briefings, insider warnings, and detailed reports, examining why these stories matter for the U.S. and its allies.
Timestamp: 01:20–07:40
Backdrop:
The Israeli security cabinet held an intense, nearly six-hour meeting focused almost entirely on plans to seize Gaza City. The debate has grown in urgency as Israel contemplates escalating military operations.
IDF Chief’s Stark Warning:
Major General Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the IDF, directly challenged the government in the meeting:
“You are heading to a military government. Your plan is leading us there. Understand the implications.”
— Major General Eyal Zamir (02:40)
Zamir argued that if Israel moves further into Gaza City and central refugee camps, it will have no choice but to establish outright governance over the entire Gaza Strip. This would mean day-to-day administration—an official or de facto occupation.
He criticized the lack of a credible exit strategy, warning of a “quagmire”:
“There’s no coherent exit strategy, just a path deeper into a quagmire.”
— Paraphrased from Zamir’s critique (04:10)
Cabinet Reactions and Rifts:
Netanyahu’s Position & U.S. Pressure:
Netanyahu refused even to discuss a recent hostage-ceasefire proposal from Hamas—ten live hostages, 18 bodies, and a 60-day ceasefire for prisoner releases.
The Prime Minister invoked former President Trump, saying Trump urged him not to take “partial deals” to avoid endless “salami slices of concessions”:
“Forget the partial deals—go in with full force and finish this.”
— Paraphrased advice from Donald Trump to Netanyahu (06:00)
Netanyahu insisted backing down now would waste Israel’s “hard won military gains” and expose it to global pressure:
“If Hamas can trade hostages for concessions, Israel will be seen as brought to its knees.”
— Attributed to Netanyahu (06:40)
Foreign Minister and Intelligence Minister sided with Zamir, warning Israel is losing international support as more Western countries recognize Palestine.
Domestic Criticism:
Outside government, the Hostage Families Forum sharply criticized Netanyahu, accusing him of “sacrificing the captives for his own political survival.”
Likud Minister David Amsalon reportedly called the operation “Israel’s Vietnam” (07:10).
What's Next?:
Military continues to prepare for “Operation Gideon’s Chariots”—potentially placing most or all of Gaza under Israeli control.
The IDF may soon be responsible for policing, providing basic services, and managing over 2 million Palestinians—raising the specter of drawn-out occupation, increased casualties, and global accusations of “colonial rule.”
“The longer troops stay, the higher the risks of insurgency, of mounting casualties and of global isolation. And yet, that may be exactly where Israel is heading.”
— Mike Baker (07:30)
The episode closes this segment with a dilemma:
“Israel’s government now faces a fateful choice—strike a deal that risks leaving Hamas standing, or push forward and risk occupation they have repeatedly said they don’t want.”
— Mike Baker (08:10)
Timestamp: 12:45–20:50
New Study Overview:
A comprehensive report led by Dr. Netta Barak Cohen and Dr. Jonathan Boxman exposes widespread and systematic diversion of humanitarian aid to terror groups and repressive regimes:
“UN agencies and international NGOs have been, ‘looking the other way as aid was diverted across multiple war zones.’”
— Report excerpt (14:10)
Case Studies by Region:
Africa (Somalia):
Ethiopia:
Sudan:
Syria:
Yemen:
Afghanistan:
Taliban “taxed” about 40% of aid; international supervisors often failed to report theft, likely meaning diversion was even higher.
“The true diversion figures are likely higher given the Taliban’s skill at embedding themselves inside of aid operations.”
— Washington think tank senior fellow (17:40)
Gaza & UNRWA Accusations:
UN’s own Palestinian relief arm, UNRWA, called a “streamlined aid diversion operation.” UN denies “systematic diversion,” but Barak and Cohen argue denial is symptomatic of the larger problem.
Data reveals 88% of Gaza aid (May–August 2025) failed to reach intended recipients.
“They’re controlling the aid, selling it, getting money out of it, paying salaries and recruiting youngsters to fight against Israel.”
— Israeli military official to Fox News (19:10)
“Aid agencies are not alleviating the war, but prolonging it.”
— Israeli official warning (19:30)
Larger Implications:
Major General Eyal Zamir’s Candid Warning:
“You are heading to a military government. Your plan is leading us there. Understand the implications.” (02:40)
Settlements Minister Orit Strok’s Rebuke:
Referenced the Bible to accuse Zamir of “cowardice”—“an easy quote if you’re not a soldier.” (04:30)
Netanyahu on Hostage Deals:
“Forget the partial deals, go in with full force and finish this.” (06:00, paraphrasing Trump)
“If Hamas can trade hostages for concessions, Israel will be seen as brought to its knees.” (06:40)
Likud Minister David Amsalon:
Called the Gaza operation “Israel’s Vietnam.” (07:10)
On Aid Diversion:
“UN agencies and international NGOs have been, ‘looking the other way as aid was diverted across multiple war zones.’” (14:10)
“Only 12 to 17 percent of assistance actually reaches civilians.” (15:10, Somalia)
“UNRWA... a streamlined aid diversion operation and enjoying a unique level of international immunity and freedom from accountability.” (18:40, quoting report)
“Aid agencies are not alleviating the war, but prolonging it.” (19:30)
This episode delivers tightly paced briefings on urgent geopolitical crises—blending military, political, and humanitarian analysis with clear attribution and real-time relevance. Baker’s style remains frank and direct, urging listeners to “stay informed, stay safe, stay cool.”
