Up on today's show. No mbappe, no problem. Gonzalo Garcia bags a hat trick for Real Madrid in their impressive win against Real Betis. Barcelona left it late to claim the bragging rights in the Catalan derby. Atletico Madrid drop points on the road once again as they're held by Real Sociedad and Villarreal return to winning ways after victory at Elche with Alberto Molero leading the way in front of goal. Stay tuned for all the. Hello and welcome to the Resties Football La Liga with Alex Aljio and me, Gary Lineker. And we're back after the winter break. Spanish winter break, I should say. How was your Christmas, Alex? Do you play a bit of darts? Because is that a dart what I see behind your head?
C
Yep, the Christmas tree has gone and I've now put my dartboard up here behind me. I was getting rid of my Christmas tree and I thought to myself, hold on a sec. This would be a really, really good place for my dartboard because I used to have a table there and other bits and bobs. So I've got rid of all of them and my dartboard now has been playing every night since Christmas.
B
Luke Littler coming over?
C
No, he deserves a rest. He deserves a rest, doesn't he?
B
Did you watch the final? It was.
C
I watched it, I watched it.
B
Incredible, wasn't he?
C
Just unbelievable. Incredible talent. So young as well. So much money. A million pound. So good. But no good Christmas. Thank you Gary. Very quick because we do not have the winter break here but had a rare Boxing Day off. Went, went racing, went to Kempton park, backed the winner in the King George, Harry Redknapp's horse, the jukebox man, Harry.
B
Redknapp won a horse from a race. Did it?
C
Yeah, in the King George. So, no, had a. Had a great day out and then back to work on the 27th. So, yeah, it's been. It's been good. But quick Christmas. What about you? It looked like you were having fun.
B
Yeah, we had fun here. All my lads came around and we had, like, quiz, which I won.
C
You won the quiz?
B
Yeah, yeah, of course. Harry. Harry loses every year and he just can't cope with it.
C
The pressure.
B
Yeah, I think that's what it is.
C
Who's the quiz master?
B
Angus is the quiz master. The youngest. And this year we just split into teams and. Yeah, comfortable victory, really. So that was. That was a lot of fun. And then we had a darts tournament.
C
And who won that?
B
My mate JD was unbelievable. I mean, he just. It was around the world because we're rubbish at darts.
C
We don't play.
B
It's the first time I played darts, I think, ever, just about. And we went around the world and in both games, my mate JD had the ball to win and did it twice in really first dart. It's a joke. It was like one of those mad moments where everyone was dancing around the kitchen. But it was a bit of fun, so it was good.
C
Tell him he can come play around here with. With the elites?
B
Yeah, with the elite Dartmouth. Are you a bit worried you won't want me there, though? Because it looks like you've got windows on either side. And I think my dart go straight. Dangerous, straight through the glass window, which would. Wouldn't help. We. We'll come to Spanish football in a minute, but the news has just broken, we're recording this on Monday morning, that Reuben Amarim has been fired as the Manchester United. Well, managers, he wanted to call it, or coach, as they might call it. Clearly a bit of a fallout. We discussed it last night on the podcast after his comments at the end of his. His Prince conference. And we thought we wouldn't last much beyond that because once you take on the hierarchy, there's only one winner in those things. So, yeah, Amarima's gone. And I think it was almost as though he provoked it.
C
He wanted out. Yeah. And maybe he's felt that way for a while as well. It was one of those classic examples of is the grass always greener? You know, it was going so, so well for him out in Portugal. He was riding the crest for Wave, managing Sporting Club, top of the league. And leaves thinking he's got this incredible new opportunity at Manchester United and it hasn't really felt right for him at Manchester United from the start. I don't know if you agree with that, Gary, but I think from. From the opening matches, it didn't seem like it was the right fit.
B
Yeah, it didn't seem to be the right fit. And I think he was obviously a bit stubborn about the way he wanted to play. I don't think the players suited the way he plays. The club should have recognized that sooner.
C
Or before they signed him or before.
B
They signed him, really. I'm sure in these interviews, how do you want us to play? You must ask those sort of question. And if he says, well, this is how I play, he could look at it and go, well, I'm not sure we've got the players to suit that, or we'd give us two or three years and a few windows and we'll buy the players to fit in. I suspect they haven't supported him in the sense that bringing in the players that he would want to play in certain positions, I don't know. Also, I think it's. It's been a bit of a basket case of a football club over the last, you know, few years. So they've had all sorts of issues and they brought in Dan Ashworth, didn't they, from Newcastle, and then he, they got rid of him quickly. I understand it might have had something to do with the Amarim appointment and he didn't think it was right. So there's a lot going on here. As for Amarim, he was always one to speak quite frankly and quite openly and quite honestly, which sometimes caused him a few issues.
C
And he's really, really nice guy. I know nice guy doesn't matter in this industry. But, but he really, he really was one of the. The best to speak to post match, pre match.
B
And he'd always give you something, possibly slightly naively at times, think yesterday was. I think it was a conscious decision to upset, you know, overturn the apple cart, fire things up and see what happens. And I think it was almost like he provoked it.
C
Yeah. What next for Ruben Alarin? Few jobs going?
B
Yeah. I mean, yeah, there are a few jobs going. And what next for Manchester United? How about Enzo Maresco? He's available.
C
Yeah. Likes Manchester.
B
I think Darren Fletcher's been put in temporary charge at the moment. If he gets a good start, they might keep him for a while and then maybe review it at the end of the season or, you know, there, there's Talent around could bring in someone, you know, like Xavi or a Jurgen Klopp be interested former manager. But I don't think that.
C
I can't see that happening. Surely not, surely not. Imagine the Liverpool fan base reacting to that. But, well, another manager bites the dust.
B
Yeah, indeed. Let's shift our attention to La Liga. A good start to the year, Alex, for Xavi Alonso, which he probably needed. An emphatic victory against Real Batiste. Let's see it.
D
So how will Real Madrid cope without Kylian Mbappe, their top scorer, missing in the league for the first time this season as they host Rail. Betis. Rodrigo's free kick. It's Gonzalo Garcia who has a free header to deliver his first La Liga goal. That is how to step up in the absence of your top scorer. Bellingham. Fede Valverde. Garcia takes it down and scores brilliantly. Fine technique to chest it in. And the finish superb too. Asensio. Real Madrid have three. And Raul Asensio again left, largely unmarked, has nodded it home. Ralasencio just slipped there. Cucho Hernandez has a little bit of work to do from Rubiel's pass. Cucho Hernandez pulls one back round Courtois. Then the angle was against him. He did well to compose himself and finish. That's Rudiger's ball for Ardagula and Garcia. Gonzalo Garcia completes a brilliant hat trick. It's Valverde. That's Frank Garcia. It's a day for Real Madrid. They have five. What a start to 2026.
B
Just what real Madrid needed to start the new year because it was a kind of end of the year. There was a lot of murmurs, a lot of worries and everyone, I think they stuck with him during that period and bit of a vote of confidence to do that over the Christmas period because it's an obvious time where you would think if they wanted to make a change, that would be a good time to do it, but they didn't. They come back and won comfortably.
C
Yeah. And it felt at the time that Kylian Mbappe was. Was carrying them, that they wouldn't be winning these games without his goals. So the fact that he wasn't playing out injured and Gonzalo Garcia comes in and steps up in his absence was really, really positive for Real Madrid. A perfect hat trick as well. Right for left for header. All five goals came from academy players, from Castilla players, but it was a brilliant, brilliant performance from young 21 year old Gonzalo Garcia. I think I preferred the second goal. They were all good goals, but What a goal. That was his second goal. Unbelievable.
B
I mean, brilliant bit of skill. I like them all. And what I liked, even with the kind of back flick one that. What I liked in that one was not necessarily the finish, but watch the movement. He goes, he backs away and then sprints in and he completely gambled. And that's how you score goals. So I love that goal. I thought his technique for his header was absolutely perfect to head it back where it came. We see so many players now trying to flick it with the side of the head, which is. Doesn't usually work. Head it back where it comes from. He impressed us in the World Club World cup, didn't he, Alex? We talked about him a lot there and I think it was a few weeks ago you mentioned him and say, well, why is he.
C
Where is he looking? Xavi Alonso is listening to the podcast.
B
He must be. Xavi, thanks for listening.
C
Yeah, because Mbappe was obviously out during the Club World cup, so he was playing. So Mbappe out now, I guess now what does, what does Xabi Alonso do when Killian Mbappe comes back? Is there a way that he could play with. With both of them?
B
Well, how about this, right? So he can play with both of them. Garcia plays centrally like he's done because he looks a natural. He seems to have a few. I don't know. This is a fact with Vinicius Junior. It's. There's a lot of talk about whether they might even sell him during this window. I think he was linked with Manchester United. I suspect that will not happen during this window, given the aforementioned issues going on at Old Trafford at the moment. But then playing Bappy back in his. His favorite position on the left.
C
Yep, Yep, there's a plan. Hopefully he's listening. Hopefully he's listening.
B
Well, I don't want to, you know, I don't want to do the dirty on Vinicius Junior, but no, the fan base aren't.
C
Happ was. He was booed when he. When he came off yesterday again. So I think that that relationship, Real Madrid, Vinicius Jr. Is going to end at some point. But maybe not in January, maybe in the summer. But back to Gonzalo Garcia. I read this crazy stat that the last time a Spanish player scored a hat trick at the Bernabeu, he wasn't born. It was. It was 23 years ago and it was Raul. So he was the last Spanish player to score a hat trick there.
B
So massive day.
C
But he'd never. He'd never scored a La Liga goal before Sunday. So massive, massive day for him. Huge day for him.
B
Oh, it was. And I mean, three brilliant goals in different ways. You said a perfect hat trick. And a perfect hat trick can actually not be particularly brilliant at times. But I think his, his. His was. It stands out. I mean, he's been banging in the goals. He scored a lot of goals in for Real Madrid.
C
B25.
B
The hard thing is breaking through at Real Madrid, isn't it? Because they're not quite like Barcelona in terms of producing their own talent. Obviously do. And, and you mentioned the fact that they also scored the goals yesterday, but it's not like Barcelona, who have actually, because probably financial reasons as well. What's. What's happened there? They've. They've produced so. So many players, huge numbers of players over the last couple of decades and it's. So it's probably good to see Real Madrid do that because what they do normally, obviously, is go out and buy Galacticos and, and it. That makes it almost impossible for young players to. So you have to do something sensationally good to get yourself noticed. And he's clearly now done that.
C
And I think a big moment for Xabi Alonso as well, because he's clearly backed Gonzalo Garcia. So the fact that he's come in and stepped up, maybe a moment for Xabi Alonso to say, see, I told you this guy was talented. So positive for Real Madrid when it wasn't positive before the break. Marco calling Garcia the magician El Mago on the front page this morning. They're still four points behind Barcelona, but Real Betis were having a. Well, are having a great season. So I think it was a massive three points and a big boost before the Spanish Super Cup.
B
Yes, they got the four clubs going to Saudi Arabia. I suppose they'll get a bit of sunshine. But, I mean, it's not like Spain is particularly cold in the winter.
C
It's snowing today in Madrid.
B
No, it can get cold in Madrid because Madrid's quite high altitude, isn't it?
C
Yeah, you can ski an hour outside of Madrid.
B
I was going to say that I remember scoring those four goals for England against Spain at the Bernabeu and it was bloody freezing. But any excuse to the bench.
C
Drop that one in. Drop that one in.
B
Yeah. So what does he. What does he do now, then, Xavi Alonso? What does he do with. With his situation? You can't drop someone. I mean, he's got this little tournament now where I. I guess they'll probably fiddle around a little bit, almost use it like a. A kind of post first half of the season, pre season tournament in a way. But what did the fans feel about it going to Saudi over there?
C
No, it makes it incredibly hard to go and watch your team play in the Spanish super cup, doesn't it? It's. It's a long way to go and it makes me think that the fans in the stadium might not be genuine Madridistas unless. Unless they're living out there, of course. But.
B
Well, I mean, the thing is, if you've got Madrid and Barcelona, you've got two clubs there that have a massive.
C
Massive following around the world.
B
Fan bas.
C
I'm just saying, not your season ticket holders.
B
Yeah, yeah, well, they're not massive travelers to away games anyway, are they? Spanish fans? I mean, not. It's. It's this. It's a different thing. Particularly in La Liga, you go to an away game and you don't get the amount of support that it's different for obvious reasons. I mean, geographically, obviously it's a lot larger country than somewhere like England.
C
Yeah.
B
For example.
C
Yeah, true. And the kickoff times are ridiculously late as well, often, so. Can't be coming back at two in the morning, can you? Yeah, it's difficult, isn't it? I think I did hear a few Madridistas saying, right, start, start. Gonzalo Garcia over Kylian Mbappe. Now it's like, hold on, whoa, calm down.
A
Come on.
C
This guy Killian Mbappe scored the same number of goals in a calendar year as Cristiano Ronaldo in 2025. You know, you can't start saying Ben Chimbape. I'm not saying they were saying Ben mentioned Mbappe, but surely, I guess as it gets later on in the season and they've got big Champions League ties coming up and you know it's going to be essential that they rest in Bape. He's just picked up an injury, so that's prime example of the fact that he can't be playing week in, week out, midweek weekend.
B
Do you know what the injury is?
C
It's a left knee sprain. Nothing major, probably a few weeks. So he will be back, but they're going to have to manage him, aren't they? So the fact that Garcia is in brilliant form is only positive for Xavier.
B
It certainly is. Elsewhere, Barcelona left it fairly late against their local rivals Espanol. And in the end, though, they walked away with three points. And this is how they did it.
D
What a way to start a new year. The Catalan derby as Barcelona look to start 2026 as they ended 2025 with an eighth straight win in all competitions. Romero's cross. It's Mia's header. He just kisses the top of the crossbar and goes over and almost went in front. In fact, it's a fingertip save by Garcia.
B
Dio.
D
Lopez just rolling away from a challenge there to tee up Danny Olmo. Barcelona have left it late again, but Danny Olmo puts them in front in spectacular fashion right in the nick of time. Well crafted, but beautifully finished.
B
Furman.
D
It's Furman's ball. It's a dink. And it is finished off by Robert Levandowski. The deest of touches to give Barcelona all three points.
B
Well, the Catalan and Derby was won just by Barcelona. It took them a while there. Espanol having a really good season. I mean, recent seasons, really, they've been pretty cad and fodder in many ways, but different, different proposition this season. Espanol.
C
Yeah, yeah, they're having a great season. And it was a really close match. In fact, Hansi Flick came out after the game and said we didn't deserve to win it. Had it not been for Joan Garcia in goal, returning to his former club, of course. Very hostile.
B
Unbelievable save under the crossbar.
C
The best I've seen, I think, this season. Unbelievable. So good. But they had to put netting up behind either goal to stop the Espanyol fans throwing objects at Joan Garcia. He wasn't welcomed back to put it lightly, but what a performance on his return. Unbelievable. One of my favorite moments was when he actually pushed one of his defenders. Did you see it? Jeremiah in front of him to block the. The shot. It was on fire. It was so good. Two late goals for. For Barcelona. Golaso from Dani Olmo. So good.
B
Yeah. I mean, he's got that in him, hasn't he? What a finish.
C
Yeah, I liked his celebration as well. He sort of just like that with his watch, like. All in good time. I'm here. I'm here.
B
Oh, I thought that might mean you should have put me on earlier.
C
Oh, maybe, Maybe, maybe, maybe. Yeah, it could have. Yeah, it could have. It was Firmin Lopez who. Who set up both goals as well. Danielmo. And then it was a Lewandowski who's. Who scored.
B
It's a lovely little finish. You know, the first time I saw it, I thought, oh, he's not that it's come off to defend his leg and looked over, but I think he. There was definitely just a little dink. Superb finish, I thought, yeah.
C
What about Marcus Rashford then? He started on the left Replaced at half time.
B
Well, he was. I mean, he took a. A big hit, didn't he? Just before half time and he was down injured. I wonder whether it was that anything to do with that. I mean, you can't play well every game. No one can. But no one likes being substituted at half time. But he received a yellow card and he was. He was hit quite hard just before half time and was down injured. So I don't know what Hansi Flick said, anything after the game about why he did that, whether it was because of either of the two reasons or. I mean, he does make a lot of substitutions around half time as well. Hansi Flick in lots of games.
C
So he's done it before to Marcus Rashford, hasn't he? So.
B
And others.
C
And others, yes. Yeah, yeah. And others. But it is nine straight wins in La Liga for. For Barcelona. Four points clear. I hate to say it, but it's. It's hard to see any sides stopping them.
B
Well, it isn't. It isn't, because you know you're going to get chances against them, but they generally try and outscore you. I mean, obviously, Espanol. Two things wasted their chances. And also, as you mentioned, the brilliance of Barcelona's keeper. So, yeah, I mean, you know what it's like. You only need to lose one game and suddenly things are a little bit different. You know, Real Madrid starting the year really well will help them. So, yeah, but Barcelona looking good at present. Let's discuss one or two of the other games after we take a short break. Welcome back to the Rest Is Football, La Liga with Alex Alger and me, Gary Lineker, and, well, it's. It's time for our regular update. I mean, we might have to start paying Eric, you know, but worried for Weekly Contributor for his contributions.
C
He doesn't have his love for Athletico Madrid.
B
Yeah.
C
Oh, wait.
B
Was he happy this weekend? Probably not, no.
C
Of course he wasn't. One or draw. So from Eric, he says, well, that was bad. Real Sociedad deserved the win. Athletic managed to create three chances against a team that have been woeful this season under their new manager. Real Sociedad really went for it after their equalizer. Wish we did that. Long way to go, but still looks like we're gonna have to secure that fourth spot as Lali will probably miss out on a fifth Champions League spot for next season. Super Copper's semi against Real Madrid later this week. Xabi loses and press say he could go. Simeone loses and no pass. Another.
A
Nothing will happen.
C
Nothing matters and then he said, I would like to ask Gary a favorite. I know back in 1991, Gary tried telling Simeone that the goal was in that direction. I will pay for Gary's flight over to Madrid, if he wouldn't mind reminding him again. And I have his loads.
B
Oh, my God. Is that what. That's amazing. You've put up a picture there for those that are not viewing this are actually listening to it, of me arguing with Diego Simeone. I didn't even realize they were playing against Simeone. I mean, I was a hard man. You know what I mean? I could deal with it.
C
Like, why are you arguing Diego Simeone?
B
I'm just saying to him, you're playing too defensive. You've got to go forward. And Eric's absolutely right. It's good. Wow, what a fine that is.
C
Long time ago.
B
He got his revenge on England, though, didn't he? Eventually he did. With Beckham, of course. That famous. Yeah, yeah. So not much to discuss. I mean, Griezmann could have won it again. He came on, didn't he? And then had a really good chance. Chance. Towards the end, he went for the dink, which I understand why, but the keeper kind of sussed him out.
C
Conor Gallagher as well, had a really, really good chance to make it 2 nil just after the first goal. But it was actually Real Sociedad's first game under their new boss, Pellegrino Materazzo, who's the first American to manage in La Liga, which is an interesting fact for you, but really poor again from Atletico Madrid, now 11 points, points off the leaders at the halfway stage. It's been an underwhelming. I know they've had their highs. They've had a few highs this season, but really overall underwhelming for. For Diego Simeone.
B
He's got a lot of money in the bank. Well, literally as well.
C
And he's got Giuliano now playing extremely well for him. He actually set up that first goal. His son, Giuliano Simeone. Simone set up some brilliant work down the right. He's had a great season. He's been a bright spark in that Athletico Madrid team.
B
A Simeone that the fans actually like at the present point. Vireal, they came back with a comfortable win against Elche and scored three goals as well. Banging a few goals because that's generally where they struggle perhaps a little bit in scoring goals. They're very well organized, difficult to beat, but, yeah, decent performance.
C
Yeah. First home defeat of the season for Elche as well. Such A strong league campaign for Villarreal, but we'll go back to it. I know we've spoken about it. I was looking at the table earlier, the Champions League table, just working out where Villarreal were. That they have the same number of points as Kyra Almaty from Kazakhstan. Just make it make sense. I don't understand. I don't understand.
B
It's like they're a completely different team when they play in that competition to what they do in La Lig. It is a strange one, but they'd.
C
Probably take it, you know, finish. Finish top four this season in La Liga and then go at it again next season, sign some players, but. But still, it's. Yeah, it's interesting. I just. I can't really work that one out, to be honest.
B
Okay. Do you want to round things up for us, Alex?
C
Yes. Celta vigo beat Valencia 4 1. It was a very happy return to football for Los Celestes as they cruise to victory. A double from Borja Iglesia as well as goals from Jones, Al Abdelawi and Ugo Alvarez made it four games unbeaten for Celta as they continue to hunt European football. Valencia, on the other hand, have now dropped into the relegation zone. Mallorca lost 21 at home to Girona. Victor Sigankov and Vladislav Vanat were both on the scoresheet as Girona jumped above Valencia and out of the relegation places with victory at Mallorca. A late Vera Morichi penalty was little more than a consonant for the home side who are now level on points with Girona. Both are just outside the drop zone. A big win for Levante and Luis Castro in his first game in charge. Three nil away to Sevilla. Another big result at the bottom of the table as Levante travelled to Seville and came away with three goals and three points. Ike Losada, Carlos Espy and Carlos Alvarez were all on the score sheet for the side that went into the weekend. Routed to the bottom, they climbed to 19th. A1 all draw between Alaves and Real Oviedo. Federico Vinhas scored and was then sent off as Oviedo couldn't hold on for a precious three points. Lucas Boye grabbed the equalizer for Alaves before they had Carlos Protesoni sent off late on as well. Despite picking up a battling point on the road, Oviedo slipped to the bottom of the table. A1 all draw between Osasuna and Athletic Club. The new year didn't bring about a change in fortunes for the Bilbao based side as their strike struggles continued. Ruben Garcia put Osasuna ahead in the first half before Gorka Guruzeta rescued a point for Los Leones. That's now three league games without a win for Athletic club and another 10 draw between Rayo Vallecano and Getafe. Mauro Arambari scored a last minute equalizer for the visitors as they halted a run of three straight defeats. Jorge de Frutos had given Vallecana the lead on the stroke and halftime, but they couldn't hold on for a crucial three points, which means they've now gone eight La Liga games without a win.
B
Great stuff, Alex, and we'll call it a day there. We'll keep a close eye on what happens in Saudi Arabia with the Super Cup. Something else that we can discuss when we do our episode next week.
