Hello and welcome to the Rest is Football with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer and me, Gary Lineker. In our latest episode of Premier League Greats the moments that made them. We're going to discuss someone that we've all worked with. Recently retired, he's now into management, doing particularly well at the moment. But he's really known for being one of the great, great midfield players of Premier League history. And probably the greatest goal scoring midfielder. I would suggest a certain Frank Lampard.

I was easy to play with. You go first.

Yeah. I think the thing that sticks out for me is his goals tally. I mean for a midfielder and the number of times. And I'm sure that the clips we'll see is that he got on the end of the timing of his runs

into the box were like 177 Premier League goals.

[Micah Richards]

177. Bloody hell.

Maybe he's a little bit disrespected. Actually. Maybe I was part of that.

Yeah.

Because I remember the conversation I was talking about this one.

I didn't fall. Well, I did, but I didn't. Yeah, because he's a nice, humble lad in he. And remember I talked about that area where I was having myself when I. So I was 18.

No, no, I'm humble Meeks now.

Yeah. So I got into England and I was having myself. That's what the kids say. They're having him say. He's having himself, isn't he? And like I said, I was champagne Aston Martins. So then we play the England game and he treats me like. Like we're best mates. I love the way you play.

Well, it's good you gave him an assist.

[Gary Lineker]

Exactly. I love the, you know, dynamic and all this and teach me certain aspects of the game, what I can improve on. Loved it. Like best mates. So then we go away to Stamford Bridge and play for Man City. We're not the Man City of today. We were struggling. So we're in the tunnel and we like, stand up, stand up, stand up, stand up. So, you know that's the Chelsea side. Yeah. And this is the Man City side. So I've come down, I saw Joe Cole, shook his hand. All right, M, how you doing? Everything all right? No problem. Geezer. I've gone to him and he's just looked the other way. He's blanked me.

He's left you hanging.

[Gary Lineker]

He's left me hanging. So I'm thinking, just the other week we were best mates and now you're blanking me. So going to the game.

Super blanky Lampard.

I'm raging. I'm raging. I'm thinking, who does he think he is? You're not even that good. Gerard's better than you. Anyway, that's what I'm thinking in my head.

No, you didn't say that.

No, I didn't say that. Of course I didn't say say that. So we go onto the pitch and I'm looking at him. I'm not even concentrating on the game. I'm just thinking, when he comes around me, I'm going to absolutely smash him. Couldn't get anywhere near him. That game is the worst game I've ever played for Man City. Four goals.

[Alan Shearer]

You think did a job on you in this?

[Gary Lineker]

Four goals were your fault. Four goals. We're going to get them. Jason's going to get them for me. Look back at those goals. Oh, my, how atrocious I was.

[Alan Shearer]

He did a job on you in the tunnel. Psychological.

[Gary Lineker]

He could say that, yeah. But then after I saw him at England camp again, and before I could say anything to him, he comes up, I'm one of the good guys, mate. I'm one of the good guys. Why have you got the ump with me? And I said, off, prick. No, I didn't. And after that, what did you realize? He was just shy. He was, you know, quite reserved and all that, sort of. But I just thought he was blanking me because he didn't rate me or. I don't know, maybe he was just focusing on the game. But I took it as a bit of a diss and I didn't like it, you know?

Are you over it?

[Gary Lineker]

No.

[Micah Richards]

Can you tell?

[Gary Lineker]

No, no, no. However, we did work with him, didn't we? Yeah, in the Euros. And I have to say, he's one of the most impressive pundits I've ever worked with.

It's crazy.

He. His. His tactical brain is just amazing. No wonder he's doing so well at Coventry.

[Alan Shearer]

Yeah. I mean, it's Taken a while in management. He's had kind of ups and downs.

Well, he went to the Champions League at Chelsea.

[Alan Shearer]

No, I know.

In difficult circumstances.

He said ups and downs.

Yeah.

Lost his job a couple of times, obviously. Twice at Chelsea, Derby.

[Gary Lineker]

He didn't. Didn't get him up.

[Alan Shearer]

Not quite, but he did all right. Derby.

[Gary Lineker]

He did well at Derby, but didn't get him up.

[Alan Shearer]

And then he got to Chelsea because of that. Yeah.

I'm pleased for him because I. I like him. I think he's a really, really nice guy.

[Alan Shearer]

Yeah.

I mean those. Those numbers are like mad crazy for a midfielder that any center forward would be happy with those numbers.

Well, would they? Yeah. Timing of his from you.

[Micah Richards]

Probably his. That was the good thing about the time of how and when to go.

[Alan Shearer]

Yeah.

[Micah Richards]

To attack that ball and be in that position to be able to score the goal was like unbelievable. The best at it.

[Alan Shearer]

He's one of the best at doing that.

[Gary Lineker]

But he's shooting technique as well. So we'll mention a bit later when he played for City and all that sort of stuff in the training session. But his shooting technique.

And that is extraordinary.

I think John Terry and Cavalho, centre halfs, Drogba him in midfield, Pet Cech.

It's not a bad spine, is it?

Yeah, that's a great spine.

They're so hard to play against though, weren't they?

That was prime Mourinho, wasn't it?

Yeah. Their teams was just so aggressive that they could defend together as a unit, but also make you look stupid as well, you know, if you give them time and space.

But Lampard was pivotal in that. It was just amazing.

Tough to compete with a spine like that, wouldn't it? I mean, obviously, probably some of the Manchester United sides, the Arsenal, possibly City

Can I tell you now, there ain't no doubt about that in my opinion, you know, because he's got everything that's needed to become a top class midfield player. His attitude is first class. He's got strength, he can play, he can pass it and he can score goals. When you know, don't you? When you know, you know.

He was right, wasn't he?

He was also his uncle, wasn't he? Yes, Harry. So I think that's why there were slight accusations of, shall we say, nepotism.

I think, I think his one of his first. England might even be in his debut. I played in that game. It's stadium alike. England might have been Belgium.

Oh, was it?

Yeah. You could tell straight away that there was not an arrogance but a conference, you know. And that was his debut. England.

And then of course he became Chelsea's all time top scorer. Which from again, midfield player scoring a goal at Villa park, something I never did. Micah, she actually got braced in this game. Left foot. He could finish both feet as well.

I mean more often than not he would find himself furthest man forward rather than the centre forward.

[Alan Shearer]

Look at it. You can see he just loves to get in the box. Cole with a return. Danger here, Lamp. I wonder why he wasn't a nine. Because you can see he's got that absolute hunger, desire that and, and the ability to make the movements in the box.

I think it's a different skill though, you know, running late. Yeah, you know yeah.

That goal there is classic Frank Lampard, isn't it, where it's the ball. The timing of, of his run is just perfect.
