Somewhere out there is a Chevy truck and the person who drives it, well, that's a Chevy person. You probably know one, your buddy, your sister. Ones who always show up. They're the first to rise, the last to leave. They always have that little extra something and maybe you've got it too. Chevrolet together. Let's drive. Visit chevy.com trucks to explore the lineup. They just didn't look like a side fighting for a La Liga title. It was weird to watch, really. There was no fight in them.
Gary Lineker
There was nothing really bad that what he did. He just obviously was huffing and puffing a little bit. You've got to admire that. The real greats have that incredible drive.
Alex Algie
He's been really good this season. When he's been given the chance. He's had an impact every time.
Gary Lineker
You know, if he can keep this form going now, I think he's an absolute must start for England because Marcus in form. When he's in form and confident and happy, boy, it's hard to stop. Hello and welcome to the Rest is football La Liga episode with Alex Algio, me, Gary Lineker. And we're doing this on Sunday morning, even though quite a few of the fixtures are still to play. So slightly different. Alex, because you are so busy, we've got to fit into your schedule. I'll be back and do the roundup tomorrow morning and get it out for you usual on Tuesday. So where are you this time?
Alex Algie
Where am I this time? I am off to West Ham Leeds in the FA cup later.
Gary Lineker
Oh, you down the road.
Alex Algie
Down the road and then straight to Lisbon for Sporting club against Arsenal.
Gary Lineker
God, you're. But you do. You do some football games, don't you? Have you. Do you ever tally up how many you've. You've ticked off, say, this year?
Alex Algie
I actually don't count because I just try and take each one. I sound like the play. I take each one.
Gary Lineker
No, don't say, I'll teach each game. I'll take each game as it comes. Please don't ever say that. That is a fine, Alex. That is a fine. That's. That's a pound. Fine.
Alex Algie
I'll give you a pound. But it's true, though, because it's the only way I can sort of cope. Because if I thought about all the games I have from now until, let's say, even the end of the summer, including the World Cup, I think it would be slightly overwhelming. So it's much easier to wake up in the morning and think, right, I've got to get to West Ham Today, get there, do my job, come home, and then I'll think about Lisbon.
Gary Lineker
You've done too much. You've done too many post match interviews with managers.
Alex Algie
I really have, haven't I? It's one competition at a time, Gary. Let me get the FA cup out the way and then I'll start thinking about the Champions.
Gary Lineker
One hotel at a time. Really for you, isn't it?
Alex Algie
Exactly. That as well. That as well. I should start rating the hotels. I could have a little travel business on the side.
Gary Lineker
You could be an influencer. You can influence. Can I give you one bit of
Alex Algie
advice about influencers or as an influencer
Gary Lineker
yourself, as an influencer? No, I'm not an influencer, but I've watched a lot of influencers and I would say in influencing, if that. That is a word, I think it probably.
Alex Algie
I think. So to influence is a verb, right?
Gary Lineker
Yes, exactly. In influencing, you cannot, cannot just take one game at a time. You have to sometimes go ahead. Okay, that is true. That's my only advice.
Alex Algie
That is true. Map it all out.
Gary Lineker
Let's discuss what was obviously a hugely pivotal weekend of football Saturday in La Liga with Real Madrid surprisingly losing to Mallorca and. And then Barca winning away at Atletico, which is never an easy thing to do. No I Liga.
Alex Algie
No I Liga. No I Liga. And as the headline of ass said, El Madrid Regala La Liga.
Gary Lineker
They gifted them.
Alex Algie
So, yeah, totally gifted the league to Barcelona. Lackluster performance. They should not have lost away at Mallorca. Mallorca team that lost last weekend or before the international break to Elche relegation rivals, they were in the bottom three. Mallorca were at the start of the weekend. So, yeah, really, really terrible result for Real Madrid. And it's just unbelievable, really, because this is the Real Madrid side that I watched at the Etihad knock Manchester City out there.
Gary Lineker
Something about the Champions League isn't. It's weird.
Alex Algie
Well, I think it was Camavinga who came out after the last league game and he said there's something about the weekend matches just don't play well.
Gary Lineker
Maybe they're not taking one game at a time.
Alex Algie
Maybe not. Maybe not. Listen to my advice, guys. But no, he said it. But when we hear that Champions League anthem, there's something different inside of us. But you can't really say that. You've got to put in good performances, whatever the competition is. But yeah, seven points now.
Gary Lineker
Maybe they should play the Champions League anthem for La Liga games to get
Alex Algie
them in the mood, to get them going.
Gary Lineker
I mean, that Sounds. I mean, that's almost admitting that you can only get up for. For big games, which is obviously a flaw for any team or any footballer. It's very, very odd, isn't it? I mean, I know they've. They've had a few injuries and players have been in and out. Mbappe was back.
Alex Algie
First time since Feb. That he started.
Gary Lineker
I mean, he went close about three times. Great saves.
Alex Algie
Yeah. Leo Roman in the goal was brilliant, wasn't he? That was one. That one save with. With his outstretched leg, that was superb. But still 6 shots from Mbappe and. And he should have put one of them away for sure. Fede Valverde, I think they really missed him. He was suspended after that dodge red card in the Madrid derby. Maybe shouldn't have been a red, but anyway, yeah, he was. He was suspended. So I think they definitely missed him because he's been outstanding in, in recent weeks. And also Vinnie junior was rested after the international break, so. So he was on the bench. I did notice that every time the cameras panned him on the Madrid bench, he was. He was yawning, which was. Was he? Yeah, not. Not a great look, is it?
Gary Lineker
Well, he wasn't on his own.
Alex Algie
This is true. This is true. But, yeah, they started okay. They did start the game okay, but they just got worse and worse, and they just didn't look like a side fighting for a La Liga title. It was weird to watch, really. There was no fight in them.
Gary Lineker
What happens if they win the Champions League? Which seems unlikely to me because I think they're miles off it, and I know you, I've said this before about Real Madrid in the Champions League, and there was that season when they were battered by Man City, but somehow managed to win. And then even in the final, they were the second best team in it, and they won because they seem to have this weird, weird thing with the Champions League. But if they did win the Champions League, they're obviously. Now, I don't think there's any chance that they. Even if they win the Classico that's. That's coming up. No, I don't think there's much chance of them turning that round for Arboloa. I'm thinking.
Alex Algie
I think win the Champions League in Arboloa is okay to go and win their 16th European cup would be enough to keep him there a little bit longer for sure. I don't think they'll get rid of him, but they. They really like him at the club. I think the really like him as well. But he came out and took Full responsibility after that defeat. What did he say? He said, this defeat is mine, absolutely all mine. And then he said, right, they need to leave this dressing room today and only be thinking about. About the Champions League massive tie against Bayern Munich. I've got a feeling that they'll be okay, which is just weird. You lose to Mallorca and then. And then go and beat Bayern Munich. Well, I'm just imagining they are. I think they. I think they will. I've got. I don't know.
Gary Lineker
They've done it in. In the past, in the recent past, but I think they've done it with better. I think you've got to look at that. I think the midfield now compared with that of Casemiro, Modric and Cruz is miles off that. So, yes, they do seem to find a way, but I'm not sure they're going to keep getting away with it. Bayern have been really, really good this season under Vincent, improving. Kane's in top form, although we don't know how bad his injury is, whether he'll be part of that team that plays. But that is huge now. I mean, the significance of that game has probably quadrupled in significance now for Real Madrid, especially with the press and the fans and the expectancy.
Alex Algie
Yeah, mind my Easter pun. But all eggs in Champions League basket for sure. For sure. That's all they'll be playing for from now until the end of the season, which actually could mean that their season could be over in a couple of weeks.
Gary Lineker
How hard are the media on them at the moment, Alex?
Alex Algie
Well, I'm looking at some of the headlines here and it's just basically saying what Marta say. Madrid, Serinde, just like they give up. I think the first goal is a good example of that, actually. Mallorca's first goal. Camavinga was sort of just jogging back, just so slow. And, you know, we don't really want to criticize Trent. We want him to do well, but he was also just a bit lethargic. Yeah, lethargic is, I think, the right word. It was his corner, wasn't it, for Militao's superb head Us, which was a moment of brilliance, but one moment of brilliance amongst a lot of pretty shoddy football.
Gary Lineker
Yeah, it's a really good cross from Trent as well. Wasn't there for a chance. I think it was Ardigo lair early on, but it was a very lackluster Real Madrid performance all round, I thought.
Alex Algie
Yeah, yeah, yeah, completely agree. So, yeah, I think the. The general view in Spain is that they're just giving it away. You know, they're just giving up and there's not a lot of. Yeah. Fight or, or anything that we normally associate with Real Madrid. What do they say? Hastel finale. Like we keep going to the end. That's, you know, their motto. And that certainly has. Del final vamos. Real was not happening in the game against Mallorca and actually a really great moment for Verat Morici, who's been superb this season for Mallorca. 19 league goals and a real disappointment. Yeah, I was going to say with Kosovo not qualifying for the World Cup. So a great moment for him. And he missed a penalty against Elche as well in the last league game. So I think, yeah, a huge moment for him and a huge three points for Mallorca as well, who started the weekend down in the drop zone. But yeah, I'll tell you what, let's
Gary Lineker
take a little break there, Alex, and then talk about perhaps the Barcelona game and Yamal's great performance. And of course a really, really good goal from Marcus Rashford when we come back. This episode is brought to you by. Whoop. In the modern game, of course, there are a lot more games and that feeling of being slightly off by Monday and that's how it shows up. Not as an injury. Welcome back to the Rest is Football. La Liga version with Alex Alger. Meet Gary Lineker to turn our attention to Barcelona. I mean they were give handed that huge fill up, weren't they? Before the game that they already knew that Real Madrid had lost all three points and so they went into what was. I would say they probably thought this is a significant weekend if they. And they would have taken finishing that weekend on the same points difference as there is now. But. But not only did Madrid lose, Barca came from behind impressively do you remember
Alex Algie
what it was like back in the day? Can you remember any moments when you knew a result just before you head out to the pitch and what did that.
Gary Lineker
Hang on a minute, Alex, hang on a minute. What you said, can you possibly remember that long ago? Is that what you're saying?
Alex Algie
You know what I mean? You know what I mean? Just any moments when you heard a result just before you went out and did that, like, motivate you or did it put more pressure on? Oh, we can't screw this up now. See,
Gary Lineker
now, I'm only saying this, Alex, because you've got to remember when I played that predominantly the games were all played at the same time. Right? Now you will get some changes in kickoff times, but generally in England we always played at three. It was always three o' clock on Saturday. They weren't, you know, there wasn't a live TV game at 5:30. There wasn't live. You know, it wasn't like that. So everyone played at pretty much the same time. So having said that, you, you, you'd definitely look at results after of how things have been affected. But it was so long ago. It was slightly. It was in the. In the dark days, the dark days of black and white and white telly. Yeah, so.
Alex Algie
So it was a bit different back then is what. Is what you're trying to say. So it was rare that you'd hear of a score before he went out.
Gary Lineker
I mean, it did happen in Spain because they did play at different times and God, I just missed out on the title every single year I was there. So probably I'm trying to just get
Alex Algie
rid of those memories, erase those memories.
Gary Lineker
But I think Barcelona, I think they firstly were handed a huge present from, from Real Madrid, but they made the most of it and did what they had to do.
Alex Algie
Interesting what Hans, he flicked did as well, didn't he? Because he started Marcus Rashford on the left and then Danny Olmo up front. Rafinha, massive blow. He's out now. He got injured during the international break. Out for a month. So that's, yeah, not good for Barcelona. But so Marcus Rashford on the left and Danny Olmo up front, which was interesting, I thought.
Gary Lineker
Well, he gave. He probably wanted to risk. Lewandowski, obviously came on, scored.
Alex Algie
Yeah, yeah, came on for Rashford. And then Diego Simeone put Nico Gonzalez, a winger, obviously up against Lamina Mao, which didn't go so well for Nico Gonzalez. Not a great idea, really. Work.
Gary Lineker
Some of the bits that Lamina Mal did. I mean, the one where the nutmeg on the halfway line and then the instant outside of the foot, perfectly bent, precision type pass. That was exquisite. There was a dribble. I think it was in the. Yeah, in the second half where he was surrounded. He got through a gap between two players, then he went through two more players and narrowly hit his shot just wide. He flicked over the keeper and hit the post and he had the hump at the end of the game, didn't he? I think, because he hadn't got a goal or an assist either, I don't think.
Alex Algie
Yeah, I actually, I messaged a friend of mine that was at the game this morning just saying what was up with Lemine, because I saw he didn't celebrate the second goal and I don't know whether something happened in the stadium that I didn't read about or see. And he just replied saying, well, he did say, actually it was a tough week for him with the racism stuff. I don't know if you saw that during the international break, which was awful.
Gary Lineker
Appalling. I mean, Spain have been very good in terms of the government recently and allowing more immigrants in and they've stood up against what's been going on in Gaza and things like that. And then to hear that in a stadium was pretty awful, I thought.
Alex Algie
Yeah, pretty horrific. Pretty horrific.
Gary Lineker
Jump if you're not a Muslim. I mean, come on. I mean, just.
Alex Algie
Yeah, terrible, terrible. So I think he's generally had like a pretty tricky week and then was wound up because he wanted to score, prove a point and. And he tried everything. He played brilliantly and couldn't get his goal. And I think he acted like you'd expect an 18 year old to work.
Gary Lineker
That's what you've got to remember, isn't it?
Alex Algie
Have a little sulk, get the hump, throw your toys out the pram for a bit. He's young. He's young.
Gary Lineker
And I was like that at 28, Alex. I wasn't as good as him. Let me, let me state that now. I'm not comparing myself to living Yamal in any way. If we win 3 nil and I didn't score, I'd have the. I'm sorry, I'd just be miserable after the game. I mean, that's just because I don't feel like I've done what I'm supposed to do.
Alex Algie
Yeah.
Gary Lineker
And I, I think that even though he was. I mean, I don't know why he's got the hump with this. He's definitely couldn't have had the hump with his own performance, but obviously not assisted or scoring or we don't know what's going on. As you said, he's a teenager and that's the madness about him, isn't it? He seems to been around for ages.
Alex Algie
I know, I know. And I think it shows how much he cares, which is a good thing. And as he gets older, I'm sure he'll learn how to manage those emotions. Because more experienced players, I'm sure, feel exactly the same way if they haven't scored and they're frustrated, but they know how to deal with it. Get in the dressing room maybe then, yeah, hide it. Get in the dressing room, throw some things around if they want to. And there are no cameras and. And no one will ever know. So I think that's what he'll learn as he gets older. But I think in a way it is.
Gary Lineker
There was nothing really bad that what he did. He just thought obviously he was huffing and puffing a little bit, you know, so. And you've got to admire that. You know, the real greats have that incredible drive. And some people, you go, right, this young man's coming through. He has got an ability the like of which we very, very, very rarely see at such a tender age. And the one thing that there are a couple of other things that need to go now to make sure that you take full advantage of those extraordinary gifts that you've been given. And that's obviously there's an element of good fortune in terms with injuries and things like that, because things can happen. There's the off field thing that can go awry, but above everything else is the mental strength and the commitment and ambition and ultimately the drive to take yourself to the absolute top. That's what we've seen with the likes of, with Messi and Ronaldo. I'm just take the two from my most recent generation, not only were they blessed with amazing ability, but that drive to succeed and that competitiveness, and I would say that was a sign that Lamina Mal might have that. And I hope I'm prudent to be correct down the line because that's the only thing that I can think of that would stop him becoming the next thing. The next one, if you like, would be some kind of issues off the field or in his own mind, because everything else is there. Everything else is there. And I was actually mildly encouraged by that.
Alex Algie
What, seeing him react like that.
Gary Lineker
Yeah, that he wasn't satisfied. He wasn't satisfied. Even with a victory and even with a great performance, he expected more of himself. If that is indeed why he was. He was huffing.
Alex Algie
Yeah, no, I think so. What did Hansi Flick say? He said he was a bit upset because it was a match with a lot of emotions. But it's normal now he's back in the locker room. He's doing fine. So. So yeah, we move on. We move forward. We move forward.
Gary Lineker
We should move on to Marcus Rashford. He's not really had much of a look in lately. He's come on in a lot of games and he's always done well and everyone's, you know, seemingly pleased with him. But he needs to play a little bit because there's a World cup coming up and obviously Rafinha's injured which opens space for him. I'm really pleased that he started Marcus and well, he really did contribute. What a cracking goal. I know his element of Orchard went through the keeper's legs but the play before that was beautiful.
Alex Algie
Yeah, brilliant goal. Superb goal. And he's been really good this season when he's been given the chance. Yeah, he hasn't played that much and hasn't started a lot of games but he has come on and I think there's. I can't think of a game where he's not done anything, you know, where he's had a really quiet game when he's come on. He's had an impact every time he's
Gary Lineker
been brought no criticism of him anywhere either on or off the pitch because.
Alex Algie
Which is important which they're looking for.
Gary Lineker
That did happen at Manchester United but you know, we're was slightly different over here. He seems to have accepted the fact that he's probably a squad player at the moment and that Raphinha and Lamina ahead of him and I would say suggest they are two of the world's top. Well, definitely in the top five or six players in the world at the moment. So that's, you know, that's no sight. He can fill in at centre forward if at times for Lewandowski, I don't think that's his real. We all know Marcus's positions on the left. You know, if he can keep this form going now I think he's an absolute must start for England if he's fit in the World cup on that left hand side because Marcus inform when he's in form and confident and happy boy, he's hard to stop.
Alex Algie
Yeah. Yeah, he certainly is. And then. And then he was taken off and. And it was what Robert Lewandowski that came on for him and scored.
Gary Lineker
That was A proper goal by the way. It was. Just hit him and it just went in. That's when you know you're a gifted goal scorer.
Alex Algie
Oh, he did well to react, didn't he?
Gary Lineker
Well, I think he just. He went, oh, and it hit him.
Alex Algie
Yeah, it was a brilliant play from Joao Cancelo down the left, wasn't it? And then, yeah, it was his effort that bounced off Musso and then Lewandow, he was at what, right place, right time. Take it. It's a goal. It's another goal and, and a big three points.
Gary Lineker
Cancelo's come in and done really well at Barca, hasn't he? Because he was. He looked such a great player at Man City, didn't he? And then his career stuttered a little bit towards the end of that and then he moved on. He's found him way self at Barcelona now. I mean the talent's always been there.
Alex Algie
He went to Saudi, didn't he, to play for Al Halal after Bayern.
Gary Lineker
Yeah. Where it obviously did. Didn't quite happen for him, so. And then suddenly come back from. It's not the usual way around, is it? Coming back from Saudi to Barcelona. You were thinking, well, has he still got that commitment, drive? I mean, ability doesn't leave yet. He's still a relatively young man.
Alex Algie
Yeah, no, clearly he probably felt like he had a lot left in him. Still wanted to play at the highest level. Maybe frustrating for him out in Saudi Arabia at times. So. Yeah, I know you think he's been brilliant. I thought that when I was watching him at St. James's park actually the other week. No, brilliant player, brilliant player. But they were playing against 10 men because Nico Gonzalez was sent off for bringing down Lemine.
Gary Lineker
What's the ref doing there? I mean, he's given a second yellow card and then VAR have intervened, haven't they? And he's thinking, oh, right, okay, so he's changed his second yellow card to a straight red off anyway. I mean, pointless.
Alex Algie
Yeah, absolutely.
Gary Lineker
I don't think it was.
Alex Algie
Same outcome, isn't it? Unless a suspension changes. Length of suspension potentially.
Gary Lineker
Well, it was actually. It was a goal. Denying a goal scoring opportunity, wasn't it? Well, in the Premier League in England, I should say it is one game as is that of two yellow cards. So I mean, I just, I mean it's quite encouraging to see though, isn't it, that VAR is as absurd in Spain as it is as it is here.
Alex Algie
Yeah, as it is.
Gary Lineker
And every fan pretty much I've spoken to for, from every country hates it. With a passion.
Alex Algie
Yeah. I think they were checking for possible offside as well.
Gary Lineker
Well, they did check that, but that's. That, you know, we know that's beside the point, but I think once, once he went through, it was denying a goal scoring opportunity.
Alex Algie
And then they were livid, weren't they, that Jared Martin wasn't sent off. Atletico were livid. Well, he got let off and, yeah, Hansi Flick said, yeah, it's not a red card, but I don't think Diego Simeone agreed with him.
Gary Lineker
Will they be celebrating quite yet in Barcelona?
Alex Algie
Not yet. Well, eight games to go.
Gary Lineker
Yeah. Seven points.
Alex Algie
But they could win the league at El Clasico.
Gary Lineker
Is that mathematically the case?
Alex Algie
Yeah. Yeah.
Gary Lineker
Well done, Alex. Good spot. That would be a beautiful thing, may I say, not necessarily for you Real Madrid loving fans.
Alex Algie
Can you imagine? Oh, you know, I was saying we should go to Elglasco. We don't need to go.
Gary Lineker
Has that been done? Reese, has that been done? One, one. The league. One in at a Classica. It must have been at some point.
Alex Algie
Yeah.
Gary Lineker
I can't remember one, but that would be. That would be perfect planning, wouldn't it?
Alex Algie
Imagine. Imagine.
Gary Lineker
Yeah.
Alex Algie
At the new camp as well.
Gary Lineker
At the new camp.
Alex Algie
Oh, well, maybe it'd be better for Barcelona to win at the Burnabout. They live.
Gary Lineker
They were talking, weren't they, early in the season, that they might, by the time the Clasico comes around, they might have probably nearly full camp. Now, I don't know whether at the minute, it's kind of half full, isn't it? It's not generating quite the same atmosphere. I just wonder whether they'll let a few more in. Because it's a classico, the thought of
Alex Algie
winning the league at the Clasico, they might work a bit faster, they might work a bit harder to get it finished. So wait and see. You never know. You never know. Eight games. A lot can happen. But it's not. It's not looking likely that the Real Madrid will win now. No, it's a shame because we like. We like saying I Liga as opposed to no I Liga, but you always
Gary Lineker
want it to go late into the season because it's more exciting for the fans and everything. But it's not. I think it's not done yet. Not quite. Not quite. Because if Real Madrid did win the Classica, that's four points and that can swing, but I think it highly unlikely. On that note, Alex, you're going off to watch some FA cup football. I'll bounce back when all the games have been completed to do the roundup this week because you're working too hard and I just feel bad.
Alex Algie
I have been away. I have been in America which was a little bit of work but mostly fun so I'm not complaining.
Gary Lineker
I'll be back shortly to round things up. Sevilla are in trouble. They lost one nil away to bottom club Real Obiedo on Sunday and find themselves just two points ab the relegation zone with eight games remaining. A goal from Rani Unteka saw Ryo valle cano be Eli 1 nil in a big result at the bottom. The win sees Rayo move six points clear of the relegation places and leaves Elche in 18th spot. Getafe moved to within three points of the European places with a 20 win at home to Athletic Club with goals from Luis Vasquez and Martin Satriano sealing the victory. We had a five goal thriller at the Mistaya as Celta Vigo beat Valencia 3 2. Guido Rodriguez bagged a brace for lost chair but goals from Elijah Moriba, Fer Lopez and Willet Svedberg gave the visitors the points. An injury time equalizer from Lucas Boyer gave Alaves a 22 draw at home to Osasuna. Valentin Rossier and Ante Budomir were on the score sheet for the away side with Tony Martinez netting the other go goal for Alaves. Real Sociedad remain in seventh spot after a two nil win over Levante thanks to goals from John Martin and Bryce Mendez and finally Real Betis and Espanol played out a nil nil draw leaving them in fifth and 10th places respectively. That's all we've got time for. We'll be back on Wednesday with our series of Premier League greats. The moments to made them with a certain Harry Kane. Look forward to that but for now goodbye from me.
