Okay, we're gonna go through, we're just gonna give some winners, some losers, some awards for this draft. And I would like to humbly submit that the winner of this year's NFL draft is just hope.

[Craig Horlbeck]

Okay.

It is hope. I think the most every year, isn't it? It is. But particularly this year, I think the most hopeless teams actually have a tremendous amount of hope. The Raiders, the Browns, the jets, and dare I say also the Giants. Like the New York football teams. Cleveland Raiders, the worst teams.

[Danny Kelly]

The downtrodden, the down guys.

[Craig Horlbeck]

Yeah, I would say the hope. And just like who crushed the draft and who actually has the most momentum going into 2027? Heifetz. It's your team, man.

[Danny Heifetz]

You think it's the Giants?

[Craig Horlbeck]

Yeah, absolutely. I mean, they are this year's Patriots. They are going to be this year's Patriots. Everyone's in everyone's mind. You don't believe that it.

[Danny Heifetz]

I do. But what bothers me about that you're this year's Patriots, you know, the team that came in last place and then went to the Super Bowl. That doesn't happen every year.

[Craig Horlbeck]

Well, I don't think they mean that. That's going to be the outcome. It's, it's the team that's going to overperform the team that is like everything is rounding into place. There's also like the similarities, like the second year quarterback, the new first, the first year coach that everybody respects. You guys did a great job in the draft. Like, things are coming together.

[Danny Heifetz]

I think I'm realizing I don't know how to take a compliment about the Giants anymore. I'm just like, what are you, what are you saying? I'm like, oh, they're good.

[Danny Kelly]

Oh, division is kind of all over the place. Place. I think the Cowboys, the Cowboys could be good. The Eagles are. Who knows what's going to happen with that team.

[Craig Horlbeck]

I think I'm gonna bet the Eagles to get last in the in the nfc.

[Danny Heifetz]

Wait, sorry, you mean you're gonna bet the Eagles to get last in the nfcs because. Mai Lemon.

[Craig Horlbeck]

Cowboys kind of like what they did. Commanders. If Jaden's if Jaden's healthy.

[Danny Heifetz]

So I'm like the Giants. I like when we're talking about the teams, the worst teams in the league being good in two years, which is it hope or is it cope? Like do you think the Giants. It's I, I'm not just. It's actually hope.

[Craig Horlbeck]

The Giants is definitely real. I. I would say the other I to off the hope thing. My, my one of my winners underneath hope is like the really bad teams that necess that maybe didn't even solve their quarterback situation this year that are planning to solve it next year. I think did a really good job of long term planning.

Like a trust the process. Yes, good job. Trust the process. You're building the foundation.

I think Cleveland, I think the Jets, I could argue Miami a little bit. The only one I quibble with Cardinals, I don't know. Jeremiah Lovett 3.

[Danny Kelly]

To me that's just.

[Craig Horlbeck]

And they took Carson back. I don't know about that. But I think Cleveland did a great job. They traded back, they accumulated picks. I liked their first lot. They took two wide receivers that we, that we liked. Like they are actually building an infrastructure where if you bring in a guy next year, if they can get Dante Moore, Arch Manning or whatever, they could be in a great spot. Same with the jets, man. Like they're going to be rolling with Gino this year. I quibble a little bit with like, did they need to take Sadiq and a wide receiver in the first Sadiq and Omar Cooper in the first round. But heading into 20, 27, what the jets have built with their offensive line, with the skill players, it's kind of nice. And even Miami, Carlos's Dolphins, like, they have a lot to do. Their roster is pretty depleted. But I feel like they did a great job in the day two and day three rounds of this draft. And also we're all talking about how they don't have a wide receiver. I'm like, maybe they're just waiting for fucking Jeremiah Smith and they're gonna have the third pick next year and they didn't get enough. They didn't reach to get Carnell Tate and now they, they're the second or third pick next year. They're just gonna take Jeremiah Smith.

Kind of sick also because there's probably gonna be an early run on quarterbacks if they, if Malik Willis looks great. Yeah, there they go.

[Danny Heifetz]

Overall though, dk, who do you think is the actual who won the draft? Like if you think if there's a single team that came out the best of Everybody.

[Danny Kelly]

So we were talking about this yesterday. I think there's a difference between class grades and who won. To me, I think the Raiders won the draft. They got a new franchise quarterback who I have, I feel is going to be good there. I think they're. And they're setting him up well for success because they brought in Kirk Cousins. I don't think they're going to force him to go in right away. It'll be like a more natural succession plan. So that's great. And I think I just pretty much loved every pick that they made during the draft. I, I just, they were scooping out value. They were getting some of the players that I really like. They went up and traded for J. McCoy in the start of the fourth round. That is like you, you could talk about, oh, maybe he only play a couple of years because of the knee issue or whatever, but I'm like, in

the fourth round, oh my God, who cares? Dude, that, that is so true because look, we don't know exactly what happened with Jamar McCor's knee. I'm not a doctor, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Who cares? He has a knee issue. But he also, obviously he ran a 4, 3, 8, 40 yard dash. So the knee isn't a huge problem right now. So we can put two and two together and say it's obviously probably more of a longer term thing with the knee. Maybe it's a second contract issue. Okay, well, you know who else has second contract issues? Every 25 year old player in this draft, including multiple, went in the first round.

You're not even planning on playing Mendoza year one. So it's like the McCoy thing.

[Danny Kelly]

Cool.

[Craig Horlbeck]

Let's see what he's like in 2027. We can take the whole year off if he wants to. We are, we are playing the long game here.

[Danny Kelly]

Yeah. Yeah.

[Danny Heifetz]

And again, if McCoy had a completely clean bill of health, he probably is a top 15 player in the entire draft and the Raiders got him. But yeah, I mean, even just other. I mean the Raiders, I mean the Raiders got Mike Washington Jr. Running back at Arkansas, which, all right, it's a backup running back. But like, man, that's a hell of a good backup running back with Genti, like it is a good infrastructure that

they have a guy that we compared to like Raheem Mostert.

[Danny Kelly]

Right, right. Yeah, Well, I think he would. And I do think he fits really well with this Kubiak offense. I mean they're going to have an incredible thunder and lightning and both of them are kind of lightning they're both very fast. Same with Genti. But yeah, their run game is going to be good again. Like, they went and got trade on Stux, who I think is a safety at Arizona. He's a. Yeah. Safety out of Arizona. He's a little bit older. He's like 25 years old, but he is kind of one of those guys that could end up being a culture changer. He went from walk on to captain in college. Really good ball production. He's really instinctive in coverage. He is not afraid to stick his face in the fan is like the expression I always love as a defender where he just. He loves coming down and hitting and, you know, I just think he's a really good player.

You probably should be afraid to stick your face in a fan.

Did you come up with that or is that a common.

That's like a rolling ball of butcher knives type thing. Sure, sure. Yeah.

There's like a tiger in there. There's a tiger in there. But. Yeah, no, I love the. I love the Raiders draft. And I'm not doing that just to pander to Austin. I. I thought they did a really good job and everything that you look at. And again, I know that we kind of said this last year with Pete Carroll, but this to me, feels more real. And the way that they're building the foundation, like I said, it feels long term.

Last year when we said the Raiders won the off season, we were young, we were ignorant.

[Danny Kelly]

We.

We. But since then, this off season, the Raiders won the off season. For real.

Yeah.

Yeah. Last year's off Seasonal victory. That didn't mean anything. This year's is awesome.

It was like Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly, Geno Smith, all these old guys that we got swept.

In retrospect, it's kind of up.

It was a bunch of guys that were really innovative 12 years earlier. That was. It was. Wasn't great.

But John Harbor Giants.

I just think all of the bad teams last year did a good job in the offseason this year.

Do we want to go over what the Browns did? I love the Browns draft. Yeah.

[Danny Heifetz]

If they were any other team, we'd be like, wow, this is a great team.

[Danny Kelly]

To me, it's like when you're doing draft grades or evaluating what happened. Let's try and take the name of the team away. And like, just look at what they did. They traded back in the first round, got a couple extra picks and still got the top tackle on the board. They came into this draft knowing they needed to get a tackle, Spencer Fano, and he might end up playing left tackle for them. He might play on the right side, but that's obviously a. A really good trade for them. They. And then they came back and got two receivers that we really like. Casey Concepcion, Denzel Boston. Denzel Boston fell into the second round. We were thinking, you know, he would be his first rounder, very likely. And that was great value for them. Just going through, all the way through their draft.

I thought they got Emmanuel McNeil, Warren, some people thought was gonna be first rounder.

The way that I would explain the jet. What happened with the jets is I like all the players that they took, especially early on because they took David Bailey, number two. They took Kenyan Sadiq, number 16, Omar Cooper, number 30. He's a receiver out of Indiana. And then they also took one of my favorite players, if not my favorite player in the draft, d' Angelo Pons, the cornerback in the second round and. But I think the, the quibble I would have is if you look at where they pick those guys, I'm like, I really like these players that they got, but they could have got these other players I maybe like a little bit more. But that being said, like, I think this is a good foundation for the team.

Yeah, we were like 40. How many states did we have in 1938? Like, okay, other winner. I think just tight ends are a winner, man. I think a lot of guys made money this weekend because they're tight ends and there's a huge supply. It was one of the deeper spots in the draft, arguably. And you would think if there's more tight ends in the draft, teams would wait. But the opposite happened, and teams actually went really hard to get the tight ends in the second and third round. And I think it's just the two and three tight end sets are just stay. Like, that was the big theme of last year was teams being like, screw it, we're bringing running back, not running backs, but, like, running is back. And I. Austin had a good stat. Like, basically, since Pro Football Focus started tracking this in 2006, it was the highest usage of multiple tight end sets on record. Literally, teams have not had multiple tight ends on the field in the last 20 years, more than last season. And it's probably going to go up again because we just saw, like, 20 tight ends were drafted, basically. And so I. I don't know about the individual players, but teams clearly, like, they just need. Everyone looked around, was like, we need. I mean, the Rams, I know the second round pick for the second year out of the last two years. Like, the Rams used second round pick on a tight end. They already had five tight ends on the roster, and they took a sixth with their second pick.

I mean, the jets already had a tight end that we thought was pretty solid and took another one.

I would like to. I also, I want to ask you something about Ty Simpson. I. A lot of things. The pick was weird. The way McVeigh handled it was weird. People don't really like Ty Simpson as a prospect. He's not like he's above average, but not a special player. He doesn't. He's not that big. He doesn't have that much experience. With all that said, this is probably going to work and he pro. The most likely outcome feels like Ty Simpson is the rams quarterback for 10 years. Is it not in the world where we believe McVeigh that he probably did want Ty Simpson and he just handled it really weirdly because Occam's razor. The simplest answer is probably that McVeigh wanted Ty Simpson and was a weirdo explaining it to Stafford. Then the Rams took a quarterback without McVeigh's blessing. Like, that does seem more normal.

If this is the guy McVeigh wanted for all the bullshit, like, wouldn't you rather. Don't you think it's more likely Ty Simpson's good for the Rams and above average quarterback than he just flames out?

I think I said this month I should go dig it up. It's on some podcast in freaking March or something. But I was like, basically the one avenue that I can see working for Ty Simpson is if he lands with the Rams. And so, like, that's not to say he's a bad player, but I just think based on the history of college Quarterbacks coming into the NFL with 15 starts, even 25 starts, absolute just minefield you got. And it's, it's obvious why you get into the NFL. Guess what? It's really hard to play quarterback. It helps to have some practice at it. And so I just think odds are, especially with what Heifet said, a little bit smaller guy, not elite tools. To me, it's like I don't understand exactly why they decided to make this gamble on him at this point in time. When you have the mvp, the reigning mvp, you're in your super bowl window. You could go get a guy that can help you in October and November and December, whatever. But that all that being said, like this is the best situation for him probably in the NFL.

Yeah. I mean, because the one case you could make, we talked about the quarterbacks with less than 15, 20, 25 starts. And it's not a great list. Most of those guys played immediately.

And the hit rate on quarterbacks that were drafted high and sat is probably like double. I mean the quarterbacks who sat for and like did not end up really being good, just quarterbacks that just sat in general Brady, which even as he doesn't really count six runner. Yeah, but like Patrick Mahomes sat for a year. Jordan Love sat for three years. I would, I guess one of the only guys that really, they did it and didn't work. I guess Paxton lynch would count kind of sitting maybe. But Even that was 2016. He kind of just sucked. But I don't know, it's funny because on one hand Sean McCaffrey has never developed a quarterback. He's always kind of had guys out of the box. Like he got Jared Goff, inherited a first round pick, made him. He was first overall pick and then he made him great. But like he's never really developed it. And then he. But here's the thing. He kicked, he made a Super Bowl Jared Goff and then kicked him to the curb like 18 months later. And

And then only one running back was taken in rounds two and three, which is also the lowest training draft since 1970. So overall. And also the top two running backs were from the same school, which has never happened before. I mean Auburn, there's a couple drafts where actually they were two guys like Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams went to the same draft in top five. But the first two running backs were from the like, they were like Jeremiah Love awesome next best guy, his backup. And then they waited their one guy went the next like 100 picks. It's not great.

So yeah, like, obviously I like Jeremiah Love landing spot. You can say what you want about it. It's probably not the best team he could have landed with. He's going to. It's just your 40 time adjusted for how much you weigh. So it's like XAVIER WORTHY Running a 4:2 at 160 pounds is not actually as impressive as Brian Thomas running a 4:3 at 210.

Just downhill thumper, really tenacious, field general type of guy. Obviously son of an NFL player. Ted Hurst, I think that's a really interesting pick in third round. He's basically like a poor man's version of Mike. Mike Evans on the outside, super explosive player.

Ted Hurst is the best fantasy related player. We didn't really talk about pre draft, but Ted is. He went to Georgia State. I think he's a good example of like, why are like if you're. It's kind of like Skyler Bell, who went to UConn and just led, was top five in like every category in college football this year. And it's like, okay, well if you're so good, why are you at a shitty school? But I, I do think it's easy for teams to be like, we're going to ignore these guys. But Ted Hurst is pretty awesome.

He moves diff. He is tall, fluid, sudden and really, really like, he has a massive catch rate. He could be on. He could play on the outside for them. And I think he kind of complements what they have in their receiver room right now. And obviously with Baker just ripping passes, anything's possible, right?

It's such a different skill set than you ever see where you're like, this is the fastest player on the entire field and he's actually terrible at covering receivers, but he's like the best cornerback blitzer. Like, he's not that big, I don't want to pretend. But like, instead of power, he's just running around guards in between the tackles. Like, he's so fast. But in all seriousness, all the guards, like, they've never seen anyone that fast running at them for like, it's like a different kind of thing. And so if you don't get your hand on him immediately, oh my God. Like he just. The amount of sacks he gets, the rollouts, like the running, like the even on in the running play, like the entire point. When we talk about the Shanahan system, just to go back in time, Mike Shanahan and Gary Kubiak, the Clint Kubiak's father, they. The entire point of wide zone, zone scheme running, the entire point of doing it that way was to make cornerbacks tackle. The entire system worked backward from. Let's make like you have your X's and O's. But the worst X on the board at tackling is the cornerback.

And I think he's talking to college players, college coaches, and he's like, we got to make the corners tackle. They're just as shitty at tackling in our league as they are in yours. Because he's defensive tackle at a Florida who if he was completely healthy, is probably maybe a top 15 pick.

I think like from a analytical and value based point of view, like, again, I like Jadarian Price. I actually think he's a good player, but he's just not a first round running back. He's not. He's. We've never seen a player with his, like, sort of statistical profile. The fact he was a backup on his own team. Yeah. For most of his career. And he doesn't catch passes, or at least he didn't in college. I think he could. And he could develop there. He's. He flashes the ability to do it.

I believe so, basically, yeah. He is a backup quarterback or backup running back on his own team who doesn't really catch passes. That is not a first round quarter of running back.

It's a good example sometimes where you can't just look at like you're like, oh, well, he had this many touches. Well, but if you go and watch the games, a lot of times he can get touches because he went and scored a touchdown immediately. Like, that is also like, oh, we didn't get that many touches. Well, it's because he ran for 60 yards on his first touch and then he had it like he was tired. And then they put Jeremiah Love and he got like.

If they didn't win the super bowl, they would have gotten killed for this pick.

And exactly. Schneider hadn't. Hasn't been on like an absolute heater for the last three years drafting.

Yeah. So basically, yeah, like I said before, they painted themselves into a corner at the running back position and then. And then four or five trades happened right at the very end of the draft. I'm sure they just couldn't get another person, another team to trade in.

Other worst pick of the weekend nominee is the Jaguars taking Texas A and M tight end Nate Bor Kershire.

I don't know either. It's also funny. Bor Kersher, who is 200 picks higher on the consensus board, which is kind of aggregating everyone's boards. Wisdom of the crowd style. Like, like, you know, the index fund is. It was two. It was a reach by 200 picks.

How do we feel about John lynch in the presser? I don't know who it was, but somebody just like blatantly asked the question like, because we should talk about Dijon stribling the receiver. Oh, was it him? The receiver out of Ole Miss? They took him 33rd the first pick

For breakfast. How do you feel about that analysis and that response?

I would say, okay, well, we've looked at what you draft in the second round, and it sucks, dude. Like, maybe you should listen to the consent. Maybe sometimes there is wisdom in crowds. Maybe sometimes you should listen to the thousand other people or whatever that is, whatever the number is that saw this guy and decided he's not worth a second round pick. It is obviously this push and pull to it because, you know, why are they getting paid? Because they're getting paid to make their own decisions and make their. Make their own opinions. And obviously there's a huge part of it, which is the personality thing and who they are as people and how competitive they are and stuff like that. A lot of times these. These draft boards, consensus boards, don't factor that in. It's just not something that they have access to where teams do. But I mean, over the long term, like, the consensus board gives you information on. I think it is worth paying attention to and trying to stick to at least a little bit. Because, I mean, it is just the wisdom of crowds. Like, I think the bottom line is, the way I put it, is teams, overall, teams that try and get too cute with the draft or just think they're smarter than everyone else, more often than not, they're wrong.

[Craig Horlbeck]

Well, and we said this, I think maybe on this, the Friday episode, or maybe it must have been the Friday episode, but it's worth saying again, this is every skill position player that the Niners have taken on day two in the Shanahan era. Now Dijon Stribling, tight end Cameron Latu, running back Terry and Davis Price, wide Receiver Danny Gray, running back Trey Sermon, Debo Samuel, wide receiver Jalen Hurd, and wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Yeah, and Debo Samuel was like a no doubt guy. And so, I mean, obviously that was good pick by them, but the rest of those guys were massive reaches. Devo Samuel wasn't a reach. He wasn't considered a reach. He would have been. He would have been like they went on the consensus board and saw Devo Samuels there.

And all those other guys. I think not. Maybe not all of them, but like for the vast majority of those players, I think the reaction during the draft was like, oh, that's.

he was supposed to be a fifth rounder or whatever on the consensus board. So it's like ignoring. Completely ignoring the consensus board is. I don't know what the word is. It's like not.

Well, I mean, Warren Sharp had this thing about John Lynch's performance. And again, you can measure performance in many different ways.

Like, if you're a poker player, like, there's still a certain range of outcomes and certain odds and you become a better player.

Yeah, like you're playing probabilities. You're knowing when to defer and all these things. But overall, the night, like the proof, like, they haven't hit a lot of picks recently.

That third round tight end they took, Cam Lottie was on the team for one year.

Yeah. And like the running backs that they've taken in second and third round over the last couple years, they. Shanahan just puts them in the doghouse and forgets about them. Yeah. They never do anything. So. Yeah, I think generally speaking, I respect when people have conviction on a player, but I think there also is the proposition of when, when can we maximize our picks to get this guy instead of picking him 100 picks before, you know, wherever he's supposed to go.

Tyrion Davis Price, who's 25 years old, is currently on the Birmingham Birmingham Stallions.

There we go, dude. I and he was supposed to be a 5th rounder. So I. This is one of those things where we can never really know where a player was going to be taken, but it's playing probabilities well.

And the fact that the Niners just. You can pencil them in for like 11 or 12 wins every year does a lot of work for this, the draft.

This is also the downside of having like a great look at some point, a Kyle Shanahan, maybe you need a Brett Veach. And I'm not saying John lynch and them are going to break up or anything, but they've been together a long time. At some point, like changes might need to be made, but it's more like

John lynch said, well, it's not about consensus board consensus in our building. I'm like, what is. What does that mean? Who Kyle wants, How many. How many people are really fighting? Kyle Shannon or the player, if he really wants something, you know, I mean at the end of the day, a lot of like third round running backs and random receivers being taken to be the backup running back. I'm like, at some point Kyle Shannon watches the tape, wants a running back and then they haven't worked out in like seven years.

So anyway, I think the other thing like the Borkature pick to me just completely. Yeah, Nate Borgate or Texas A and M. But Doogie, how's it just. It just that it to me was the definition. Maybe he's going to turn into a good.

That was their first pick in the draft.

Maybe that'll turn into a good player there, who knows.

But it's a 25 year old tight end to me is if he's not good immediately a tight end is seventh

He spent five years at Nebraska and then transferred. But outside he has 38 catches in

his career outside of four players that have been great recently in the rookie year like and I could. Tyler Fannin or sorry, Tyler Warren and Harold Fanning were good tight ends last year. Sam Laporte had a good rookie year, Kyle Pitts had a good rookie year and Brock Barra is a good rookie year. Outside of those five people, tight end very famously usually don't contribute at all till year two or three. It's like the defining aspect of the position almost. So he'll do that when he's 28 for a team that should win the super bowl this year. That's a weird pick.

I saw an interview with Jimmy Stones and I don't know, he was explaining James Gladstone, the GM of the Jimmy Stones and Jim. He was basically explaining and to me I'm like, like this just feels like way overthought, way overthinking it. Basically he said we've seen the direction the NFL is going with two tight end and three tight end sets. That's a big deal. And we, we just basically knew we wanted, we needed to get our guy. I'm like when you're that locked into one player and you get that sort of tunnel vision on one guy, that's where really bad value picks happen. You should have a little more nuance and variance on your board. You can have like look, maybe there's a free agent we can get that can block really well. You know, don't get locked in. I think this is what the CX did with Darian Price. Don't get so locked in on one player that you get terrible value for it.

Your draft crit at NFL Draft, the rare.com your thing put it well painted themselves into a corner and then they had to take a running back. But because they didn't have another option because they didn't.

They didn't get anybody in free agency they and they let Kenneth Walker walk another.

When you put it like that. Caleb Downs trade up, worst pick of the weekend. I think we're going to give it to one of those but I do want to give a. I think the Dolphins should get the award for the kombucha girl draft, where the woman tries to kombucha. She's like, oh, well, I don't know. And the Dolphins had every pick. I feel like was either awesome, terrible, awesome, terrible. Like, and then even the guys in the middle are like, high variants. So it's like the Dolphins went ahead. I mean, what grade did you. I don't know how you even give them a grade. You give them a B plus, something like. So look, they drafted 13 players first.

The first pick they did, they passed on Caleb Downs. They traded back one with the. With the Cowboys, and then they picked Kaden Proctor. And talking to Carlos and I, and I'm guessing a lot of Dolphins fans, like, you just pass on one of the coolest players in the draft, like an awesome football player, and then you took this massive offensive tackle. It's just really the. The excitement Delta on that is. Is massive.

It's like, me. I mean, we have the video of me. Like, when I'm watching thinking the Giants are gonna Caleb down and they took Francis Marineau. I'm like, all right. Vegetables, broccoli.

Can I point out one thing on Proctor we have not talked about? Nate Tice pointed this out. Shout out to Nate, who's laughing about it. And I. The Nick Saban quote on Kaden Proctor is. This reminds me of all vamp. While you're doing this. When the Seahawks picked. Shoot. There was an offensive lineman, Alabama offensive lineman the Seahawks picked in the first round that no one thought. And again, this is when. This was during John Schneider's cute era. And you. It panned right to Nick Saban in the draft room. And he was like, what? And everyone's like, oh, that's. That's not a good sign.

The biggest miss I think we've ever had in our show is that Anthony Richardson's coach in college in Florida said he thought Richardson needed to work on his leadership and maturity, which. Holy shit, for your college coach to say that. Like, that reminds me like, everyone thought of sour grapes. I think Brian Kelly said to Sean Kaiser should go back to school and not go to. And everyone's like, oh. And I was like, well, he was right. And it's like, when the coach doesn't want the quarterback. Like that's very telling.

Not forever, but he, he has this great quote that your best player should set a culture of intolerance for anything that gets in the way of winning. And it is culture.
