Shopify.com setup foreign hey everybody, I'm Dave Rubin and this is First Look. It's Wednesday, May 20, 2026. We've got a packed show for you today. Vice President J.D. vance says the DOJ is now looking into whether Congresswoman Ilhan Omar committed immigration fraud. President Trump reveals stunning new details about the fortress like White House ballroom and underground security comple currently under construction. Let's dive in. We start with a major political story out of Washington, where Vice President J.D. vance says the Department of Justice is now actively looking into allegations that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar may have committed immigration fraud. And this is not a new controversy. The allegations surrounding Omar have circulated for years, but now for the first time, a sitting vice president is openly confirming that federal authorities are reviewing the matter. Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Vance was asked whether the Trump administration's Anti Fraud Task Force, created to crack down on fraud, abuse and corruption across federal programs, would also investigate Omar, and Vance didn't dodge the question. He responded, you read the things about Ilhan Omar, who she married and whether she didn't marry this person or that person, it certainly seems like something fishy is there. Then he added, everybody's entitled to equal justice under the law. Now the core allegation centers around Omar's controversial 2009 marriage to Ahmed Elmy, a British citizen whom critics have long alleged was actually her brother. Omar has repeatedly denied the accusation, and the claim has never been definitively proven you in public records. But critics point to a long timeline of inconsistencies involving her immigration history, her marriages, tax filings and conflicting personal records. According to reports, Omar entered a religious marriage with Ahmed Hirsi in 2002, then legally married Ahmed Elmi in 2009 while allegedly still maintaining her relationship with Hersi, while with whom she continued having children. Omar and Elmy separated in 2011 but didn't formally divorce until 2017. Critics have long alleged the marriage may have been part of an immigration arrangement to help Elmi gain legal status. Now Again, none of this has been proven in court. But what's different now is that the Trump administration appears willing to formally investigate the matter. And Vance made that crystal clear Tuesday. He said, if we think there's a crime, we're going to prosecute that crime. And that's something the Department of Justice is looking at right now. Now, politically, this is explosive because Omar has become one of the most visible progressive Democrats in Congress and one of President Trump's fiercest critics. She previously dismissed the allegations as bigoted lies. And after Trump brought the issue up during the 2024 campaign, Omar responded online by saying he needs serious help. But Republicans argue this isn't about identity or politics. They say it's about whether immigration laws are being applied equally and honestly. That's where this story becomes politically dangerous for Democrats, because for years, Americans have watched border laws collapse, sanctuary policies expand, illegal immigration surge, and immigration enforcement become highly selective. So now the Trump administration appears to be sending a broader message. Nobody gets immunity because they're politically connected. And if there's evidence of fraud, even involving a sitting member of Congress, they're willing to pursue it. Now to the White House, where President Trump gave reporters an extraordinary behind the scenes look Tuesday at the massive new ballroom and security complex currently being built on White House grounds. And honestly, this thing sounds less like a ballroom and more like a military bunker fused with the presidential command center. Standing outside the construction site, Trump pointed toward the excavation and told reporters, this goes down very deep. Then he revealed just how massive the underground structure actually is. According to Trump, the building extends roughly six stories underground. And and unlike traditional event spaces, Trump says this structure is being built to withstand virtually anything. He described it as made from impenetrable steel, reinforced with 4 inch thick glass and constructed using roughly 9,000 pounds of concrete. Now, publicly, this project has been described as a ballroom expansion attached to the East Wing. But Trump made clear Tuesday that this is also a hardened national security facility. According to the president, the structure will include military hospital capabilities, research facilities, high security meeting rooms, drone defense systems, missile defense infrastructure, and rooftop sniper positioning. At one point, Trump joked, I hate to use the word snipers, but we have great sniper capacities built for our snipers. Not the enemy snipers, but our snipers. And remember, this comes after the shocking shooting tied to the recent White House Correspondent's dinner incident, which intensified already serious concerns about presidential security. Trump also described the roof as dead flat. Why? Because the administration is designing it as what Trump called a drone port. He said the roof will allow for unlimited drone deployment, military positioning and and full aerial surveillance capabilities over Washington, D.C. now, politically, Democrats and activist groups are already melting down over the project. A lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation argues the administration lacked authority to demolish portions of the East Wing tied to the expansion. Meanwhile, Senate parliamentarians recently rejected an effort by Republicans to include roughly $1 billion in White House and Secret Service security funding and in a reconciliation package. But Trump emphasized Tuesday that Congress is still approving certain security enhancements, and he and private donors are personally contributing major funding for the ballroom itself. Trump called the project a gift to future presidents. And honestly, whether people like Trump or not, there's no denying he views this as part of a much broader effort to reshape and restore Washington ahead of America's 250th birthday this year. Construction and beautification projects are now happening across D.C. including fountain restorations, Lafayette park upgrades, landscaping projects and infrastructure repairs. Trump also revealed Tuesday that he personally made a multimillion dollar contribution toward restoration efforts near the White House grounds. And at this point, the overall vision is becoming pretty clear. Trump wants Washington looking monumental, secure, powerful and unmistakably American heading into the 250th anniversary celebration. And that's your first look this Wednesday. Quick recap. J.D. vance says the DOJ is now reviewing allegations that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar committed immigration fraud. President Trump reveals dramatic new details about the massive underground White House ballroom and and security complex. We'll keep following all of it. I'm Dave Rubin. Thanks for starting your day with first look. See you tomorrow.
