It's a little. It's smoother. Like it has like some kind of beautiful brand new lubricated thing in the new one that provides like, this amazing amount of the correct resistance to motion.

The locomotive. Somewhere distant. Yeah, yeah. Like, have you been on a cruise ship?

And she goes, well, people that really do this, you know, I know it's like front of the roller co coaster and back of the roller coaster. And I go, yeah, but the front of the roller coaster and the back of the roller coaster are that. Like, that would be like being in different cars. Like, that's. That is a different experience. Actually being in the same. How could there be a different experience in the same car? And then she started talking about, like, more people would be walking past your room, which, I don't know, maybe is bothersome or something, but.

I could not tell you what's in that. And honestly, because I have the car for weeks, and I just haven't, like, looked yet. But the other one I drove at performance car of the year also had the first edition pack. So it's not like there's a difference between the two. I don't fucking know. It's 50 grand, though. And then that satin orange paint. It's 3,500 because it's orange, and then 22,000 because it's satin. So it's a $25,000 paint job. So $75,000 is of that. Then you have a blackout trim. You have the carbon dash. And there was a couple of other, you know, color painted this, blah, blah, blah. Nothing like, oh, oh, ceramic brakes. $18,000 for ceramic brakes, which, thank God, I have.

They still are. This is the. Have you seen the size of these? They're the same as the ones on the earth. They're enormous.

We went up to Malibu today, was popping off at the old place. Wow. Took like 40 minutes to get coffee.

So, yeah, God damn, that car is. It's a real treat, though. We'll have to get another one because this one's actually not going to come back with me from Arizona, unfortunately. And you should.

Third Bentley. What's crazy about the paint real quick is when I, you know, I'm getting the car wrapped and it's because painting my car be too expensive. And I asked our friend at obvious, like, hey, ballpark, what would it cost to paint my car? Like, to paint it?

And he's like 15 to 20. And now, obviously, Bentley's making a profit and they have R and D to do, but they also just get the raw panels. They don't have to take the whole thing apart.

Like, that's part of the cost. A lot of the cost of doing a new paint job on a car is taking off every panel, every trim piece, every little Thing then painting correctly.

No, this is just to make it satin.

Yeah, that's 22 grand to make it satin.

I mean, in fairness, it probably can't be painted in their standard booth.

It's probably got to be painted somewhere else. So there's got to be some call. Either they have a separate booth that's, like, smaller. That's just for satin. It's probably done by hand, you know, and the QC is probably crazy. There's probably a bunch of fucking reject. And, like, I'm sure there's. There is. I'm sure if I ask Bentley, which. I'll send them an email. Why. Where does. What is the process of satin paint? I think what's interesting about satin paint, though, is, like, it's actually held up better. Like, if you go look at, like, an E92 M3 or one of those Mercedes, like, if they were taken, like, reasonably good care of, the paint has actually been held up pretty good. Like, in the beginning, we're like, oh, this is gonna look like shit in five years.

Well, because the maintenance requirements were very different.

And so if you buy the car. If you bought the car in not read or been briefed on how to wash it.

Sometimes bright sun will almost wash out the curve or shape of a car, and it actually works for it.

But the thing about this Bentley, we were talking about this a lot this morning. It's 400 grand, which is an insane amount of money. I mean, and it's. And it's a little different from something like a GT3 or GT3RS, where it. There's not a lot of people for who this is like, their dream car, and they're going to save up for this, and it's not, you know, even something so expensive, like, they're not great investments. They depreciate. Whatever. Okay. So the person who's spending 400 grand on this, like, has to be rich enough or this is just their car.

Zach Klapman (23:00)

Yeah. This is not a car that goes to collection. It's. You drive it to the collection.

Matt Farah (23:03)

Yeah. Which is a crazy thing to think about, because it's like. I was like. Jabran was like. Because he was out with us when we did the 911st versus GT3, and I let him get a little taste of the st. And so he was like, if I could get one of those, I would find a way to move money around and save up and do this and do that, and it would be my special thing. He's like, but I couldn't do that with this. This would just be my car. Which means I have to be comfortable with losing a quarter mil in depreciation in three years on my daily.

You know, just crazy. He's like, on the other hand, what do 2019s go for?

A lot less than the new ones.

Tons. Yeah, tons. But the maintenance costs are very expensive, you know, once they get out of warranty and stuff. But me, do they drive good? Every, like, pick a thing, doesn't pick anything. And it's in, like, the top 20% of all cars on the road in any of those things.

That's what's incredible is we've run out of compromise. I mean, like, money and technology finally caught up and delivers everything you want. Because remember the fast Bentleys of the 90s and early 2000s?

And the wheel control, like the old Bentley might be soft, but the control of the wheel speed these days is incredible.

Yeah, I mean, you can. You can flick a knob and it has significantly better ride quality than my car. And you can flick a knob the other way and you can drift it on a racetrack and laugh your ass off, you know, or tear up a mountain or something. And it just kind of like does everything so well. It's crazy. Very nice.

They're incredible. What a good road trip car. Perfect.

Matt Farah (25:16)

And I don't, you know, it's the same powertrain functionally as the Cayenne we just had, you know, more or less. It's that same setup, but the rest of the car is so special that I don't feel like the same way I feel about the Cayenne where it's like, skip the turbo and just get the V6 because you're in electric all the time. I think the experience of driving this in both modes is just more special all around.

Zach Klapman (25:40)

Well, were you more encouraged to drive this fast than the Cayenne? I think that the thing with the Cayenne for me is I felt like I was in a fancy dentist office or something like that. I was not encouraged to try to go fast.

Matt Farah (25:52)

Right. It's an suv. Who gives a shit? In this, going fast is actually a good time. So. Which is amazing because the early Continentals going fast was like, not that fun. Now, like, this is. This thing's a riot. And massage seats.

They gave it to me with 740 miles on it.

So I'm probably the 95th and a half percentile or something like that. Okay. The other one, the JF5 is a 4 foot 10 and 95 pounds. So I'm at the high end and if I have the longest torso and sit a bit more upright than most dudes because of his fucking looked back. Probably right on the design limits. But of course, instrumentation designers, my very first job in the industry, should try their best to keep the essential information, speed warning lights, et cetera, in the quote, a zone that can be seen by people that both extremes and not just the gray zone where you half see it out of one eye. So Porsche's UX team did drop the ball somewhat if Matt, who's tall but not a basketball player, can't see essential information clearly when sitting comfort. In fairness to Porsche, there is another gauge. There's four or five different layouts you can use and one of which did put that information in the appropriate place. So it's not like they didn't give me some kind of way out.

That's a big advantage with LCDs now because we've been in plenty of analog cars where you can't see the top of a gauge.

I love my car, but is the 296 more lovable? F8 is the last non hybrid. 296 is the new one with the V6 Hybrid. If you're just cruising on the street, I would keep the F8. It sounds better. The 296's infotainment is even more infuriating than the F8's somehow. Somehow that's true.

The 296. I mean, if you drive hard, then it is superior. The transmission is better, the power is better, the steering is really good, all those things. But if you're not driving like that, then it becomes a much more. I mean, cars are subjective. Like I guess I would go back to him, like, what turns you on about the F8? Why'd you buy it in the first place? Was it just because it's a Ferrari or do you love the sound? Do you love the look of it? Because if it's things like that, then going to the 296 you lose the sound. You just have a V6 and it's a good looking car for sure. It's gorgeous.

Yeah. And it's kind of. It's annoying to use the controls. So a lot of those like two big pillars of 10 minutes. The battery dies also.

Yeah. I'd probably hang on to the F8 honestly. Eric says considering a V6 manual Amira, C8 Z06 prices have started to come into the same price territory for a used one. I've driven the Amira and previously owned a Stingray but sold the Stingray because it didn't feel exciting. I don't go to the track canyons only. Not a daily driver. Which would you choose? I would probably. Hmm. The big question is of course do you want to drive stick or do you want to drive auto? Different experience. Which do you want to have? And the manual in the Amira is pretty good. It's a nice car to drive.

It is a better, not better. I mean they're both really good overall cars. They're both sporty, they're both comfortable, they ride nice. That's up to you. So I don't think you can go wrong. It really is like. Do you like manual or do you like paddles? Yeah, it's kind of.

I mean if you had a C8 stingray, but it wasn't exciting. C06 is a lot more exciting.

It's hard if you don't go to the track. You miss a lot of what the Z06 gives you. But it also does give you great canyon performance. And it feels like it's a cheap Ferrari.

Yeah. And you can take the roof off. It's also a converter.

You're kind of getting what F8 guy was after with an NA motor that sounds like that.

Well, I don't think K trucks and vans are like that good at going off road. Like they're pretty small like the Delica maybe. But that's not a K van. That's bigger.

Samurais are very popular off road machines. Yeah, they're really good because they're not. I think they're slightly bigger than Kei cars and a lot of that is width. So you have more stability. Yeah, I mean they're still narrower than I think a wrangler, but you can get wider axles. Like you can push it out a bit.

You can build those things. Super sick. I mean, and honestly a two door wrangler is a pretty small like budget. If you're talking about a cheap two door wrangler from 15 or 20 years ago, that's a pretty small vehicle as well. I mean it's not, it's not as interesting as a, as one of the weird Japanese toys. But like, if that's what you want, like true, a lot of support for it and whatever. I've never gone off roading in a real other than the Samurai, like a, in a lot of stuff. But they, you know, Mitsubishi was doing a lot of cool off road shit in the early 90s.

Pajero is really legit and it's a complete thing and it's a little more comfortable than a Samurai is. Tiny. You know, I mean if you went off road camping in a Samurai, you have that back little bench. Yeah, kind of it.

So I would, I would want something slightly bigger like a Pajero where I could bring a cooler and all my, you know, camping gear.

Yeah, they're not super fast, but you'll definitely get on the highway without getting hit by a car. That's a good start.

A good one that I've ridden around a bunch that's very forgiving is my friend's Triumph Tiger 900, which is very flexible for all different types of riding. And it's really comfortable to ride for a couple hours. So I really like those. But it's a good piece of advice. And a lot of those off road or those adventure bikes, you know, you get them on knobby tires or you get them on street tires. Just get them on street tires and then you're fine.

No, we didn't go to this. All wheel drive biased. Could manufacturers restomod or sell new engines, transmissions, and other components for Preexisting vehicles. Could that be a good way to keep the same cars on the road, reducing the manufacturing and environmental cost, yet allow internal combustion engines to still be sold? Could up cycling be the environmentally feasible option for enthusiast brands? Well, most manufacturers will sell you a new engine, transmission or component for vehicles already on the road.

True. On the performance side, GM Performance already does this. Ford Performance does this. You can get.

If they are supporting enthusiast cars, it's because the enthusiasts have demanded it. But I don't think they're. There's any real motivation for an OEM to actively try to not make more cars.

It might just be a lighter mechanism, but like I think it's just, it's got race car shit on it.

Yeah. Cause it's complicated. Porsche just had to recall some of their center lock wheels, which is a bummer. I'm not trying to disparage like center lock in general, but something. I forget who I was talking to. Like Vin Andatra makes good content about this. Whenever you want to change your tires, you need the super long torque wrench. I think it's much more inconvenient than I would want on a street car. You know, like if you're going to change those wheels, if you're on a road trip and you happen to break down in the wrong area that only has one tire shop, you might have to get real creative to get that center lock off. Yeah, I just don't want to deal with that.

Yeah, I would rather not have it, but I get it. Steez Buscemi. When talking about the use of cars, I find the mentions of valet parking to be fascinating as it's not Really a thing here in Melbourne. Melbourne, is it a cultural thing where in order to seem premium, a venue must have its own parking and valet. And I always get confused at how often I hear valets mentioned. To me it's the thing I only see in movies, I guess, valet parking, not big in Melbourne. I mean in la, there's, it's seen, it's too big. It is seen as a luxury. Right. Luxury restaurants and people put valets. It's all also a way to make money and it's a way to, you know, otherwise you at a busy restaurant that doesn't have valet, you might have to look for a while to find parking.

Zach Klapman (68:15)

Well, I think, I mean I was a valet for three years. So when I moved to la, the first apartment I had was a crappy apartment in a not good neighborhood. And the parking lot next to me was for a restaurant and a 7 11. And I saw that they had a valet stand and I was like, what? I was just confused. So when you pulled in, you had to tell the valet, oh, I'm going to 7 11. Not the restaurant. There was. And this had eight spots.

What I figured out it was is in a lot of la, there's just not enough parking lot for the restaurant. So they street park the cars. So the valet will handle that for you. Otherwise you could be driving around for half an hour looking for a street spot. So it's really like, it's a way for the restaurant or parking lot to make extra money and a way for them to kind of air quotes salt the parking shortage.

Yeah, but it's like the movie Clueless is very accurate. What's the point? Everywhere you go has valet. Which is very, very true. Will you scroll down please? Chappie says, oh, just got their first pan. No Chappie, I have a Panerai. I do like them. I just don't like them at full price. I like them at a deeply discounted price. Oh wow. Meh. Recently took over my father's 997 Turbo Cabrio and love it. Great car, super low miles and a six speed. But I can't help but think it's too fast to really enjoy. You wind it out in third and you're doing a buck 15. Yeah, the 997 Turbo is a very, very fast car. Would I get the same driving enjoyment from a 993 non turbo I like? You know, basically I think you could, assuming it was okay with your dad if you sold that a 4000 mile 997 turbo cab 6 speed is a hell of a car. I think you could sell it for quite a lot of money and you could get into a great993. And993 is a really nice situation. Drive. They're a lot of fun. They are. They are fun. You don't need the turbos. They're fun in a different way. If you can get an S, that would be great. That might be hard, but you might be able to get an S for that kind of money, depending on what that turbo gets. But yeah, you can. You. You can rev it out a little more. It's not insanely fast, but they're very pleasant to drive.

And they are a little bit smaller. Okay. Ryan Copper's pan addiction bought a great 981 Boxster two and a half years ago. I've daily driven it almost 40,000 miles and still love it. Thinking of adding a second car to tackle light off roading and get to fun places around Arizona that the Boxster can't. It needs to be not huge, reliable and under $15,000. Is an early 2000s Tacoma a bad idea? I don't necessarily need a truck bed. Well, you can get a 4Runner. A 4Runner is a Tacoma SUV.

Basically, if you can get one of those for under 15. I mean, a Tacoma is a great solution for what you're proposing because it is reliable and it will off road very well and they last a long time and I think they hold their value pretty good. But if you can get a 4Runner, then get that.

Would you rather have a Video with an interesting engine or good everything else but with a lackluster engine.

I think I would have one SUV and one sports car and then one modern sports car and then one older sports car. So like just a pared down version of kind of what I have now, like electric SUV daily. And then, you know, maybe the Porsche and the nsx, something around those lines. And then a motorcycle.

I think I would have two cars. I think I'd have some sort of off road thing and a newer sports car that would have a car payment. I'm not sure what it would be like GR86 or something, but I'd probably change cars every two years.

Matt Farah (74:43)

I love a least daily. I love the not having to worry about it.

That I have a least sports car is probably where I would end up. I know that financial. It's not the smartest idea but.

But you could treat it like it's a rental.

When I've driven them, the early ones certainly did. You said the new ones they fixed it.

Well, I think if you pulled up to any car meet and someone said oh. And they ask about it and if you say this one has nearly 200,000 miles and you go this one is super expensive.

Yeah. Squirkle jerk. I've noticed that Mercedes S class coupes have depreciated into the thirty to forty thousand dollar range. Is this a steal considering these were six figures or does the maintenance make them a no go? It's both. It is a steal because the cars are overwhelmingly well made cars and they will ride and drive and Handle very nice if they're maintained properly. But also they cost a goddamn fortune.

They'Re out of warranty and they might be approaching Mercedes have like an A service and a B service and like alternates. It's like every 5,000 miles it's the A service, every 10,000 it's the B service. And so you know, if you're coming up on the B service or whatever, one of. If there's a C service that's like every hundred K or whatever, you might be looking at a fucking enormous maintenance bill. So. Ppi. Ppi, my friends, I'll tell you what.

There are a lot of CLS E55AMGs like this generation E classes and CLSS at the car meet and there was like 20. So I think people have jumped, people.

So I mean you could make it handle better, but those V8 Audis are famously very nose heavy cars and so there's only so much you can do. And in order to make that front end stick better, you might have to compromise the rock or the camber or you might have to something up in order to make it turn in.

Yeah, I mean you just have to go big tire, maybe lots of spring.

Like it handles fine for road driving. You know, it's, it'll. If you, if you're playing within the limits of grip with which on roads you really should be, then it's fine. You know, it's just not on a racetrack when you're really pushing it. Yeah. It's like understeery but on a windy road it's pretty much fine. Is that.

And that is it. And they may have ridden better than those early. You know, the M3 or the C63 was competing because the M3 was always really tight. So, yeah, it was more responsive on the track. It had better weight balance. But on a bumpier road where you're just kind of flowing along, RS5 might shine.

The RS5 was pretty nice. Like, it wasn't, like, terrible.
