Fr. Jim Martin (0:32)
Welcome to the spiritual life. I'm Fr. Jim Martin. On this podcast, we reflect on how people experience God in their prayer and in their daily lives. And I am joined by my wonderful producer, Maggie Van Dorn. Maggie, good to be with you.
Maggie Van Dorn (0:45)
It's good to be with you, Jim. And we have such an exciting guest lined up today, quite possibly the most famous nun in cinema, actually.
Fr. Jim Martin (0:55)
Although do you think Julie Anders and Audrey Hepburn would agree.
Maggie Van Dorn (1:00)
How to, what's it how to solve a question or a problem like Maria.
Fr. Jim Martin (1:04)
Very good. And then Audrey Hepburn in the Nun Story. But I think for most people of maybe your generation and you know, people born in the last 30 years, yes, definitely the most famous nun in cinema history. Of course we are talking about Whoopi Goldberg. We are so happy to have her today.
Maggie Van Dorn (1:20)
We are. And Whoopi Goldberg is one of these guests who really does not need an introduction, but we're going to do it anyways because she is a multi award winning actress, one of only 20 entertainers who has achieved EGOT status that is.
Fr. Jim Martin (1:35)
Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony for those not in the know.
Maggie Van Dorn (1:39)
Very versatile performer. Whoopi got her start in the 1985 film Color Purple and then went on to become the second African American woman to win an Oscar for best supporting Actress for her role in Ghost. Her role in Sister act and Sister Act 2 is of course iconic for Catholics. And these days Whoopi has set a new record co hosting the view for 18 consecutive seasons. That's more than any other host, including its founder, Barbara Walters. Jim, how did you meet the famous Whoopi Goldberg?
Fr. Jim Martin (2:12)
Well, I knew of her and actually even before she was in film is stretching people's memory. She was a great standup comic and just wonderful performer. So I knew her through that and I met her briefly on a show with Neil Degrasse Tyson, the astronomer and scientist. And then it wasn't until this Vatican sort of audience for comedians that I really got to know her and, you know, chat with her and she's just wonderful. One of the things I didn't know about her was that she was raised Catholic and we talk a little bit about that on the podcast, but she's great. She's just a lot of fun, and every bit as much fun as you would hope.
