Both performers were working at the same comedy club, with Jim Love doing musical warm-up acts before the main performers took the stage.

Their first interaction nearly ended in a fight when Jim jokingly told the audience he planned to perform only sad songs so the upcoming comedian would have to work harder to win them over. The joke landed perfectly with the crowd — even though Carrey initially heard only part of it backstage.

That moment eventually became a funny memory and an early glimpse of Carrey’s relentless determination.
