Sixteen years ago, Heather and a fellow bartender dreamed of owning their own business. While others spent their nightly tips, they saved every dollar.

Then 2009 hit.

Banks weren’t lending. Restaurants and bars were considered high-risk ventures. Instead of waiting for permission, they launched without investors, without loans — just sweat equity and belief.

The original concept was On the Roxx (with two X’s for style and a nod to both drinks and music). Over time, the crowd shifted younger and the vibe leaned more DJ/dance heavy.

Heather pivoted.

When Smiley’s Acoustic Café closed, she collaborated with the former owner and reimagined the space into Smiley’s on the Roxx — bringing the acoustic roots and full-band energy under one roof.

Early shows added (5–7 PM) for guests who prefer earlier evenings
Saturday & Sunday music starting at noon
Open 365 days a year — including Christmas

This isn’t background music.

Heather credits her business partner, Todd Zillmer, with building a diverse and dynamic lineup. They feature:

One highlight: Tuesday nights featuring Charles Hedgepath — a local music legend who brings surprise guests and unforgettable collaborations.

Launching in a male-dominated industry wasn’t easy.

Early vendor meetings often included the question:
“Where’s the man?”

Heather and her partner answered that with competence and confidence. They already knew the vendors, ran operations at previous establishments, and had loyal regulars who followed them.

She believes in never asking staff to do what ownership won’t do.

That mindset built what she confidently calls one of the best staffs anywhere.

Smiley’s isn’t just known for bands.
