The greatest superpower is to be unaffected by anything or anyone. To have such thick skin. You're basically always unbothered. My favorite example of somebody who's unbothered by almost anyone around them, that you can see a visual. A few years ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger was visiting Africa. And keep in mind he's no longer the bodybuilder or movie star he was when he was young. He's now like 75 or 80 years old. 75 plus. A kid, maybe just playing a prank, runs across the room past Arnold Schwarzenegger's bodyguards and jump kicks him in the back. And Arnold didn't even move. The kid bounced off him. He has enough muscle left from his days that he's completely unbothered. It was almost like a mosquito hit this guy. Be like Arnold. Emotionally, things hit you that would knock over most people. You should be like, oh, did something just happen? Life will deal you tremendous blows. That's the game, that's the challenge. It will put hurdles in front of you. You want to make a million dollars, you want to find love. If these things were easy, everybody would have them. And therefore, once you know those things are expected, you realize that the only superpower to really have is to be unaffected by them. So if you want a wife, that means women will reject you. Because on the path to finding the right one, you will find a woman who doesn't perceive you to be the right one. And once you know that's part of the game, I always say, welcome to the jungle. If you're affected by the fact that some women aren't attracted to you, you shouldn't be playing the game. Become a monk, become celibate. If you are somebody who wants to make a million dollars or $100 million, everybody does. So what separates out the people, what separates, they call it the wheat from the chaff. I actually have an organic farm. I grow my own wheat, organically grown. And what you do, you let it dry on the stalk, and then come July, August, we comb through. I used to do it with the Amish. I lived with them for two and a half years with the thrashing machine. Old fashioned with horses. But now you have modern equipment. What's the modern equipment do? It shakes the wheat and then all the fluffy dust blows off to the side and all that's left is the real wheat, the actual useful part. And that's the same in life. You want to make a million dollars, you're going to be shaken by things. You might be betrayed by a business partner, you might have an employee betray you, you might have a business go bankrupt. An idea of yours fail if that affects you. Don't even start on the path to trying to make a million to 100 million. Don't even start. For those of you who are thin skinned, by the way, some of that's genetic. A lot of it's also learned from parents. If you had a very thin skinned mom or dad who was very sensitive to the outside world, don't think that there's zero value in sensitivity. There is. Some of the great artists of all time were highly sensitive people, some of the great doctors, some of the great parents. But if you choose to go down the game of the modern world, you're not going to live out in the middle of the woods and just have four or five people around you your whole life. You're going to be in modern society where you have different cultures hitting you at different angles, different worldviews, different political values. The greatest skill. Now, I don't know if this was the greatest superpower a thousand years ago, but now is to be unaffected. There's a great book on this, it's called, the title is don't sweat the small stuff. And almost everything is the small stuff. So the simple litmus test that you should keep through, and I was even doing this, it's easier said than done. Yesterday I was bothered by something that in hindsight is a one day event. Anything that's gonna be bad for one day doesn't matter. So. So the simple rule of the thumb to separate the small stuff that you should not be sensitive or bothered by versus the big stuff is will it matter in seven years? If the answer is yes, then you should be bothered by it. So if you're walking across a big street and you hear a truck coming, blaring its horn, in a split second you'll realize, well, if I don't make the right decision, be sensitive and jump out of the way, seven years from now I might not exist because I'll be dead today. So sweat that. But I see guys where a girl breaks up with them, I'm going, bro, you didn't even like this girl. You know how many guys have a woman? They, they want to break up with her, but they just don't do it because they're lazy or they don't want the confrontation. And then she breaks up with them and they're bothered. I said, wait a second, this doesn't, this is the opposite of thick skin. Like you have thin skin when you should have thick skin. You have thick Skin, when you should have thin skin, you should be sensitive enough to break up with her so you're not wasting her life, right? So when you should be sensitive, in that case, you didn't act in a sensitive manner. And then on the flip side, when you should be thick skinned, when she breaks up with you, you get all butt hurt. That's like 80% of guys. I see people running a business and they're like, ty, I was doing one of my private calls. I have a, like a coaching program. I have like a high net worth one and then one for people just starting out. And I was on the one where people just starting out and they're building an SMMA social media marketing agency and they're like, ty, like I'm not getting enough paying clients. And I said, that's because you're too sensitive. If you weren't sensitive, you would talk to 100 businesses a month knowing that 10% of them will even reply and give you the time of the day. And knowing, knowing how that 10%, you might just get one client. But that's a good ratio because if they're paying you 5,000 to 10,000amonth and you stack one a month, in a year, you're making 60 GS a month 12 months from now. But most guys can't hack that 12 month journey because they're easily bothered and they're easily affected. You want to make a million bucks? Be unbothered. You won't find love. Be unbothered. Some people are going to reject you. Some women are going to find you ugly. I don't care who you are. You can be a supermodel, blonde supermodel, someone like, I don't like blondes. You can be a brunette super. I don't like. You could be black. I don't like black guys. You can be white. I only like black guys. The only people making it through this game we call Earth are the unbothered. You basically can separate society into the unbothered. They're the ones winning. And the bother. Look at politics. Whoever's the most sensitive loses. Whoever's most sensitive loses. Whoever takes the insults and just goes, you want to build a personal brand, you better be unbothered. There's never been a personal brand in the modern world that doesn't get attacked. You could be like Mr. Beast and you build wells to people in Africa and people are gonna come trying to bother you as a, oh, this is some dude trying to neo colonialism. People are just gonna make stuff up. If you're family. If you're poor, people are gonna make fun of you and if you make too much money, they're gonna. Somebody in your family's gonna be like, ah, he's a rich asshole. Unbothered is the correct attitude, especially if you wanna make money. By the way, I'm gonna put my phone number here. I keep two phones with me, my personal one and. And a business iPhone. So text or WhatsApp me here the phrase unbothered. Tell me a little about your business. If you want to talk, if you want to learn how to work with me closer, I got a private mentor program. I'm pretty picky who I let in. But if you're doing more than 5 million a year, text me the word unbothered or WhatsApp me the word unbothered. Or if you're a beginner, you should look into my VIP coaching. It's something I do with a smaller group. Take a handful of people and show them the way. I'll show you how I made my first million, how I got to 10 million, how I got to a hundred mil. So text me the word unbothered. And a little bit about you. I check it about 10 minutes a day so you might get an answer. Sometimes my assistants help, but I check it too. Be unbothered, my friend. Leave a comment below. Subscribe and leave a comment on a 1 to 10 scale. 10 is you're totally unbothered. 1 is everything bothers you. What's your number? And be honest. What's your number and why?
Episode #701 – Stop Being Emotional. Nothing Should Really Bother You.
Host: Tai Lopez
Date: April 12, 2025
In this episode, Tai Lopez delves into the concept of emotional resilience, stressing the critical importance of developing “thick skin” to overcome setbacks in love, business, and life. Using vivid anecdotes and practical advice, he illustrates why being "unbothered" is the modern world’s greatest superpower—and the key to achieving wealth, success, and happiness.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Anecdote:
Tai opens by praising Arnold Schwarzenegger’s unfazed reaction to being jump-kicked in public as a metaphor for emotional sturdiness.
“He has enough muscle left from his days that he's completely unbothered. It was almost like a mosquito hit this guy. Be like Arnold. Emotionally, things hit you that would knock over most people—you should be like, oh, did something just happen?”
(01:33)
Life’s ‘Jungle’ Challenge:
Every worthwhile goal comes with obstacles. Knowing setbacks are inevitable, the only true superpower in modern society is to be unaffected by them.
Path to Love and Success:
Tai explains that rejection is a natural filter. For example, seeking a relationship or financial success inherently involves setbacks—only the emotionally tough succeed.
“You want a wife, that means women will reject you…welcome to the jungle. If you're affected by the fact that some women aren't attracted to you, you shouldn't be playing the game. Become a monk, become celibate.”
(03:45)
Business Betrayals:
When striving for major financial goals, betrayal and failure are part of the process; taking them personally is a disqualifier.
“There is...some of the great artists of all time were highly sensitive people…But if you choose to go down the game of the modern world…different cultures hitting you at different angles, different worldviews, different political values. The greatest skill…is to be unaffected.”
(07:03)
“Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” Principle:
Draws from the book Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, urging listeners to ask: Will it matter in 7 years?
“The simple rule of the thumb…will it matter in seven years? If the answer is yes, then you should be bothered by it.”
(08:29)
Apply Thick and Thin Skin Appropriately:
Tai criticizes misplaced sensitivity—being bothered by breakups one doesn’t care about, but insensitive to partners’ needs:
“You have thin skin when you should have thick skin. You have thick Skin, when you should have thin skin…”
(10:25)
Building a Social Media Agency Example:
New entrepreneurs often fail because they’re too affected by rejection.
“If you weren't sensitive, you would talk to 100 businesses a month knowing that 10% of them will even reply…most guys can't hack that 12 month journey because they're easily bothered...”
(12:15)
Keys to Financial Success:
Perseverance—no matter the negativity—is the separating trait:
“You want to make a million bucks? Be unbothered. You want to find love? Be unbothered. Some people are going to reject you. Some women are going to find you ugly. I don't care who you are…”
(13:22)
Society’s Winners:
The main difference between people who succeed and those who don’t is their ability to remain unshaken by criticism, setbacks, or insults, across business, personal branding, and even family.
“The only people making it through this game we call Earth are the unbothered. You basically can separate society into the unbothered. They're the ones winning. And the bothered.”
(15:05)
Politics, Fame, and Family:
Whether dealing with political insults or becoming a well-known figure, being bothered is the recipe for failure.
On Taking Insults:
“Whoever’s most sensitive loses. Whoever takes the insults and just goes...”
(16:40)
On Building a Personal Brand:
“You want to build a personal brand, you better be unbothered. There's never been a personal brand in the modern world that doesn't get attacked.”
(17:02)
On Relative Criticism:
“If you're poor, people are gonna make fun of you and if you make too much money, they're gonna…Somebody in your family's gonna be like, ah, he's a rich asshole. Unbothered is the correct attitude, especially if you wanna make money.”
(17:44)
Tai invites listeners to gauge and share their own emotional resilience:
“Subscribe and leave a comment on a 1 to 10 scale. 10 is you're totally unbothered. 1 is everything bothers you. What's your number? And be honest. What's your number and why?”
(19:30)
Summary in a Sentence:
This episode underscores why emotional resilience—the ability to remain unbothered in the face of rejection, failure, and criticism—is the master skill for success in relationships and business alike.
