Tony Kornheiser

The Tony Kornizer show is on now.
Tony Kornheiser
This is my life. It's my life. I bump up against authoritarian figures that you know, just deny, deny, deny, no matter what you say and tell you it's your fault. Whether it's their fault. Just time and time again, we got the name of the person from Hershey's Chocolate. Mark Pol. Yes. So he's in Louisville. So great. So great. So thank you because the Reese's Pretzels, big fan. Fabulous. Just absolutely fabulous. Okay, so there's a lot of things I also want to read. This note, this is from Nikki, okay. Who sent a drawing.
Guest 4
Oh, that's right.
Tony Kornheiser
A lovely drawing of me, which is on the set now, the PTI set. And she writes, my Husband started listening to you on the radio 20 plus years ago. I was hoping you'd sign the copy of the drawing I did, and you can keep the original. I enjoy hearing John laugh during your shows. Thanks for all the joy you bring him. The rest of the gifts I give him won't compare to this. This one. So it's all downhill from here for him. Thanks for making his day. Sincerely, Nikki. Isn't that nice?
Guest 4
Very lovely.
Tony Kornheiser
Isn't that nice? And the note that she.
Guest 1
What a great window into how someone close to you listens to the show.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, yeah. And the. And the card that she says says, thanks, but it's T period Hanks. And it's a drawing of Tom Hanks.
Guest 4
Yeah, it's lovely.
Tony Kornheiser
Isn't that great? Yeah, that's just great. Okay, so. So the first thing I need to tell you is that I don't know much about rainbows in my life. I have seen rainbows a number of times. I would say that they are a rare and unusual occurrence. I don't think you see them even once a year, but maybe you do. I don't.
Guest 1
And they feel very specific to a summer storm.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. And I thought rainbows come out after very specifically, a summer storm. But there was no storm where I live yesterday. There was not even rain for like seven or eight hours. And I looked outside my house at about 7:45 in the evening, and I saw a rainbow on one end. It was a double rainbow, but the second rainbow was really vague. And I had Carol take pictures. And the pictures don't come out as good as you want them.
Guest 1
They never do.
Tony Kornheiser
They're not as colorful as you want them to be. But I have the memory of this high arcing rainbow in the sky with five or six different discernible colors. And I wrote Michael a note. Right, you did. I said, have you seen the.
Guest 1
I started this note because I like to tee you up after dinner.
Guest 3
Right.
Guest 1
And I will go back to the. I will go back to the message. But I was asking, did it rain where you are? Because I assumed you live in a nicer neighborhood. It might, you know.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Guest 1
You might have been spared.
Tony Kornheiser
And it didn't. It didn't really rain where I am. I mean, just droplets, just nothing. Yeah. No wind, no rain. So we are.
Guest 1
We are in the middle of bedtime, and at this point, we are in lockdown. 7:45, all the curtains are drawn, blackout shades out. We are ready to go. Kids don't know what time it is. And you're like, did you see the rainbow. We have to undo everything. The captain is now focused only on this. He keeps going back to Bootsy's room. Totally worth it.
Tony Kornheiser
Worth it. Big rainbow in the sky. Worth it. You didn't see it.
Guest 4
I did not see it.
Guest 1
Not just not to see rainbow, it had thin, thick bands of color that actually looked solid, which is why it felt so out of place in early May.
Tony Kornheiser
Purple, orange. Yes.
Guest 4
I think it's a universal reaction when one sees that.
Guest 3
Right.
Guest 4
To just be instantly happy.
Tony Kornheiser
Right. It's rare, right? Yes. I don't think I've seen 10 in my life.
Guest 1
It was not it. It stayed in focus for the full. You know, eventually we did close the windows again, but it's not like it was fleeting and just sort of disappearing quickly.
Guest 4
Now, I did not see a rainbow, but I did see this fellow on a hike yesterday.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, wow. That's a big bird of prey.
Guest 4
Yeah. Turkey.
Guest 1
Have you been hearing a lot of woodpeckers recently?
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Guest 4
Yes. Out there. I definitely do see him every once in a while, too.
Tony Kornheiser
We ought to do a nature show. We ought to not do a sports show. By the way, this is May 5th, and it is the birthday of my Uncle Boots, the late great Uncle Boots. And we assigned May 5 as the birthday of the Puna. You never really know when dogs are born. You get dogs at some later date. We always celebrated the Puna's birthday on May 5th.
Guest 1
Jesse's been the same age since 2017.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, she's 11 years old. Jesse's 11 years old.
Guest 1
Hasn't grown out of the puppy years.
Tony Kornheiser
Not yet. So the gnats got relief yesterday. They got great relief. They got two innings from Jorge Lopez, six up, six down. Jose A. Ferrer, who I hate and think should be DFA'd, had a very good inning. And then, of course, Jose Ferrer gave up one hit, but nothing extraordinary. Then they put in Finnegan, and I was ready for the worst. And Finnegan had a clean three up, three down. Wow. Yeah, it seems like. Wow.
Guest 1
It seems like since they brought up Chafe in the hour they brought him in the other day, that there actually has been a bit of a culture shift.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. I mean, they're better now. I know.
Guest 1
I think yesterday it was raining so much.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh.
Guest 1
And stuff that normally misses was just finding edges and corners.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. The umps were just saying, yeah, that's a strike. Just get out of here.
Guest 4
Do you think the example they made out of Pooch.
Tony Kornheiser
Pooch. I believe it's that. I believe they dfa pooch and everybody. And there Was a chill. Yes, a chill went through that. You know, the reliever room. Yeah, that's what I believe.
Guest 1
Did you see the sky for the start of that game that you saw it over the river? I. I can't believe they got this game in at all.
Tony Kornheiser
It was pouring. Yeah, it was pouring. I mean, there comes a point where the people in the front rows, they don't even put on the clothing and they just leave.
Guest 1
And it looked like in the bottom of that fifth, you know, they were trying to just get one more run across to see if, like.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, if we got to. It's official. Yeah, yeah. They wanted. They wanted the game to be official. So even when Gore fell down on a delivery on the mound.
Guest 1
Sure. It brings about defeat the mound and.
Tony Kornheiser
He could have honestly broken his ankle. They just put people out there to put more dirt on the mound. They didn't because they were in. They're in the bottom of the fifth at that point. But it's tied. It's tie game.
Guest 1
They were stealing bases like they thought.
Tony Kornheiser
One run could win. If Cincinnati had scored one run, they'd have called that game. Cincinnati would have won 2 to 1. But Cincinnati did not score. Gore went 3 and 2 with everybody. Gore, 5 innings, 100 pitches, strikeout pitcher, you know, a lot of pitches, you know, a lot of three and twos.
Guest 1
Think he's leading the league right now with pitches thrown.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Is that right? Yeah. Scotty Scheffler won the Byron Nelson by 3,000 shots. He was minus 20 in four days on the front at one point.
Guest 1
It's hard to do the math on that.
Tony Kornheiser
Just the front put him in first place. Just the front. He finished like 54 holes that live finished minus 31, which tied the record for the best score ever in a four round thing. He missed a birdie on 18 that he should have had. He had a bogey on 17 or he could have gone easily 30, 32 to 33. Eric von Royen shot minus 23. He will never shoot minus 23 in a tournament again. And he finished eight back. That's the greatest performance he will ever have. And he finished eight back. So I don't know what Scheffler shot yesterday, but Jordan Spieth shot 62 yesterday, his low ever on the pro tour. And I don't know that he gained any ground.
Guest 1
It is a reminder that after just finishing one Grand Slam with Rory, we have Spieth coming up in just two.
Tony Kornheiser
Weeks for the pga, right, to get the Grand Slam. And we have Scheffler Who. Who at the moment, right now.
Guest 1
And it's so great to see those guys who were playing. Who were playing these tournaments as teenagers, just 63.
Tony Kornheiser
63 gain one. He shot a 62. He gained one. They know each other well. Yeah, I mean, they're Texas kids and all of that. They know each other well. And in the. The Derby, we will talk about the Derby with Pat.
Guest 3
40.
Tony Kornheiser
It was a wonderful race. Sovereignty beat journalism. Stretch run. My friend. Eddie had Sovereignty. Oh, Eddie made money. Eddie. Eddie not only won. It's a nine to one horse. He not only won with a win bet, he had an exacta and he had a triple. Eddie, like, made about 300, $400 for putting up about 30 or 40.
Guest 4
That's a great day.
Tony Kornheiser
Eddie had a great day. That's a great day.
Michael Wilbon
Now.
Tony Kornheiser
I said, does this happen to you often? He goes, oh, no, I never win. You know, so, I mean, it doesn't make up for all the times that I've lost. But I said, but you won. He's felt really good about that. That was a good race. And two road teams won yesterday in the NBA playoffs, which is a double that you don't expect. I did not think that Golden State would beat Houston and Houston. I did not. Right? No, not at all. Not at all. I thought when they lost game six, they were done. That's it. You know, we'll see what Wilbourne has to say. We'll see if he backs and fills on this. But I think that Wilbot spent the entire playoffs saying what acrobats Houston has and how fast they are and come at you in waves. And so I don't think he thought Golden's. I did not think that. And I did not think that Cleveland would lose game one to Indiana. I didn't. Indiana was in that game the whole way. Every time Cleveland came back and took a lead, Indiana put their feet on the ground and said, no, no. And they went back and got the lead. Tyrese Halliburton, who people apparently say is the most overrated player in the world, was Great. He had 22 points and 13 assists added up. You know, he had. He had influenced tremendous influence on the game.
Guest 4
And his dad didn't get on the court this time.
Tony Kornheiser
His dad's not in the building. No, his dad's not in the building. I would say that. You know, I still think Cleveland's gonna win that series. I think game one is the least important of all the games. But Indiana pretty good. So we'll ask Wilbon about that. And he Also watched the derby. I bullied him into watching the Derby and he watched the Derby. The Derby goes off at like after 7:00. Yeah. I mean it used to, when I was covering it went off at 5:30 and now it's. They say that post time is 6:57. But they didn't. No, it's a slow, you know, they didn't go off till 7:05. I mean only last two minutes. But still it's. I mean you're waiting forever. It's a great television show. It is. It's a great television show. But you're waiting forever. Yeah, just forever. So we will have PAT 40 and we will have Michael Wilbon and we'll have a good show for you. I'm Tony Kornheiser.

I've heard from a handful of Littles over the time I've been sending in songs. Their support is incredible. Very much appreciate it. Hope you sure show us here for years to come. Let's just do this week plays in Michael Wilbon. I. I didn't have this. I did not have Golden State winning in Houston. I did not. I had Houston winning that game. I'm sure you did too because you always talked about how acrobatic they are and flying around and I did not have Cleveland losing game one at home. I did not. How about you?
Michael Wilbon
Well, Tony, I didn't. I wasn't anywhere to have a prediction, but I wasn't going to go against the warriors given their experience in a Game seven.
Tony Kornheiser
Really? On the road.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, yeah, yeah. On the road it was. But I told you I thought Houston could win Game 6 right on the road and digitized. So last night was. It was if. If you like playoff Basketball or just sport at its highest level where you have people who understand how to play, even if they may be physically overmatched. That was just amazing to watch. Steph Curry and Buddy Heel.
Tony Kornheiser
Buddy Heel had no points the night before.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, well, he had some points last night.
Tony Kornheiser
He did.
Michael Wilbon
He had some points. He had 22 in the first half. Yeah, he was draining threes. People have to remember here's the list of people who have as many threes pointers made as. As Buddy healed the last five years. Steph Curry. That's it.
Tony Kornheiser
That's it. Really? I didn't know that. Yeah, I didn't know that.
Michael Wilbon
So you, so you look, you're not replacing Klay Thompson, but you're, you're doing what you can. And Buddy Hill did this, you know, a pretty good level for Sacramento, but he did it for the Pacers in some big playoff even last year. So it was just amazing to watch the know how. And basically you've got three hall of Fame players who know what they're doing and the hall of Fame coach Steve Kerr and Houston's coming. They're coming. They're coming to. I, I told you this in January. Houston and San Antonio are coming to get you. They're coming to get everybody, and they're going to get them. So whatever Golden State wants to do, you better do it now. And that didn't even. Of course, Oklahoma City is coming to get. So these are the teams that in the next five years is not going to be about, you know, LeBron and Steph much longer. And when it's not about them, when somebody else has to come in and take their place, we know who that is.
Tony Kornheiser
I'm. I'm just very, I'm very surprised. I wouldn't, I would have bet money. I'm not a betting guy that I would have bet money on Houston at home in Game 7 after they won. I would have. I would have. Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
And I wouldn't have. I wouldn't have bet because you get Houston, they don't have any. Tony, you're going to, you have to suffer beat down in the NBA. It's not like the NHL where one person, the goalkeeper can really dictate the terms of the postseason. We've seen that with guys coming out of nowhere like, like Las Vegas when they were an expansion team. And, and we, we've seen that. But in the, in the NBA, teams don't pop up like that.
Tony Kornheiser
Speaking of the NHL, somebody.
Michael Wilbon
Did you see game was unbelievable. Did you see ending was unbelievable.
Tony Kornheiser
They scored Winnipeg scored two goals in the final minute. 30 and one in the final three seconds.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, the three second one. Well, no, the three second one ties the game right to go to overtime and they go to set to, to second over.
Tony Kornheiser
But they're going to lose. They're down two in regulation in the last minute or so.
Michael Wilbon
Third period. Yeah, I think the record is something like, like 163 or something when it was a two goal lead. So you just don't see, you don't see somebody even with an empty net.
Tony Kornheiser
Let me get back to basketball, okay. And we can talk about Cleveland, Indiana. The game one is the, that was the eye opening. Yeah, but it's the least important game. Like you can come back. But how about your boy James Harden gassing again again in a. Just. He is a dog in the playoffs. He's a great player. He's a Hall of Fame player.
Michael Wilbon
Not in the playoffs, Tony. In games five, six and seven, his numbers, like this year in games one through four, they're his, they're James Harden. His numbers in five, six and seven are, you know, you know, like some cartoon character. They're not even. It's like, it's like somebody goes in and removes his innards and says that okay, go back out and play now just know there's no James. He was two for eight.
Tony Kornheiser
He didn't even have 10 points. No, in game seven he didn't even have 10 points.
Michael Wilbon
And you know what, you know What? He had 13 assistant.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Michael Wilbon
And he had. And he's out there and. But first of all, he only has eight.
Tony Kornheiser
They lose and they lose big.
Michael Wilbon
They. I had a, I had a Hall of Fame coach who's active right now. Different team, but active. I had a Hall of Fame coach tell me before a game in the playoffs once what they were going to do. James Harden, how they were going to do it. And I said, come on, it's not that simple. He goes, yeah, that actually is, it.
Tony Kornheiser
Must be that simple.
Michael Wilbon
Here's what we're going to do. Here's what he's going to do. And that's what happens.
Tony Kornheiser
Your boy Ty. Luke must hate him. Must hate his guts.
Michael Wilbon
Look, look, you, you. I'm sure he was hoping he could get by one more game because Harden helped get them to a Game 7 against Denver.
Tony Kornheiser
He did.
Michael Wilbon
He did. He had a couple of really terrific games. Game 7 wasn't one of them.
Tony Kornheiser
No, it never is. It never is about this Tony.
Michael Wilbon
He's lost game sevens with four different teams.
Tony Kornheiser
Just. He's never, he's never made the Finals. Right? He's never made the finals.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, he made the finals.
Tony Kornheiser
He has. I don't mean the conference finals. Huh?
Michael Wilbon
Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City. Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
So as a very young player. That's a long time ago.
Michael Wilbon
As a sixth man.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, yeah, that's a long time ago. Before he was a star.
Michael Wilbon
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Wow. Just awesome.
Michael Wilbon
It's almost, it's almost a cruel twist to a career.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, so we're now in the second round of the playoffs. And now I will start paying attention. Seriously. Because we're down to teams, you know, eight teams in the league. Who has a better chance to win, in your opinion? And one game is already gone. Indiana over Cleveland or New York over Boston or. And as well in the west, who has a better chance to win Denver over OKC or Golden State over Minnesota?
Michael Wilbon
Well, I mean, Golden State. Golden State is going to have the struggle of his life against Minnesota. So I'm not going to pick Minnesota. But what do you mean? Why are you not going to have to? Minnesota's got just too much stuff. If you think that the Lakers were mismatched in terms of size and athleticism and length and all that, Golden State is like a six, four and under team.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
Draymond Green is going to have to guard a seven foot two guy. And it, it doesn't, it doesn't matter that that guy's not looking to score. What you see from Rudy Gobert, he can get 12 rebounds. We got 24 rebounds at the night. I'm not looking at that. But he can get you 12 to 15 rebounds by being on the floor. Now Golden State will try to do things to eliminate him and take him off the floor. And it's Steve Kerr and it's Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green and Steph Curry. And the reason, the reason that Golden State has a real chance to win a series against them is that Minnesota still has moments where they just go brain dead. And the question is, but Minnesota, Tony is 21 and four in his last 25 games. So the question is, is Minnesota going to have enough brain dead moments that the Golden State warriors, champions that they are, can take advantage?
Tony Kornheiser
So are you, are you saying to me, are you answering my question by.
Michael Wilbon
Saying Golden Denver's not beating okc.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, so. So the other one by default is is your pick is Golden State? What about in the East? Is it Indiana or New York?
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, yeah, they do. Indiana has a chance. What was the other game?
Tony Kornheiser
New York, Boston.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, New York's not going to be Boston No, I tell you what, Tony, I don't think that the Celtics champs that they are, I don't think the Celtics can beat a scrappy New York team in six or seven games. And then Indiana or Cleveland.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Michael Wilbon
And then Oklahoma City. I don't see that happening. So they'd have to get some help to win the championship. To me, and you know, I started the year I said to you, the league is too good for the Celtics to repeat.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, you said that.
Michael Wilbon
And that's. I'm going to wind up.
Tony Kornheiser
That's why I hope they repeat.
Michael Wilbon
Being right about that.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, we'll see.
Michael Wilbon
I hope they repeat. I don't believe they're good enough to go through that. If they are, then that's one hell of a championship run.
Tony Kornheiser
Yep.
Michael Wilbon
And it's something that the Pierce, Garnett, Ray Allen Celtics couldn't do. Is something that bird, McHale and Parish couldn't do.
Guest 3
Do.
Tony Kornheiser
No. Couldn't go back to back.
Michael Wilbon
No.
Tony Kornheiser
But Bill Russell did 11 times.
Michael Wilbon
So it can be done, you know.
Tony Kornheiser
So it can be done.
Michael Wilbon
League. It was, you know, it's a two team league back then. It's not a two team league now. And that's my point.
Tony Kornheiser
Let's surprise teams for them to go through. Let's surprise all the listeners. Tell them how much you enjoyed the Kentucky Derby and that you actually watched it.
Michael Wilbon
I liked it. It doesn't mean that, you know, I'm going to like have it be appointment viewing. I enjoyed it. It's the reason it's one of the great events in the history of American sports for 100 years. It is. Yeah, it is. But if I hadn't been talking to you, which I had to call you three times to find out what time the damn race went off so late.
Tony Kornheiser
I was saying this earlier when I was covering that. It went off at like 5:30. It's. That's after 7 now. It's too late. It's a great television show. God. It's a great show.
Michael Wilbon
Move it. It was. It was a great race. The mud made it.
Tony Kornheiser
Every horse is covered.
Michael Wilbon
Appealing.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, it was great.
Michael Wilbon
I loved it. I loved it. And you know, it might be 20 more years before I watch again. Just because that. Get that the race is usually on as it was one of the. Well, the NBA has moved all those games to prime time, so you don't go against it. But in all my years of doing this and in the last 25 of actually being at game sevens, a game seven of the first round is always going to be Played opposite the Kentucky Derby for years. And so I was going to be at that game or the prelude to that game and not be able to see the Derby unless I was in a media room and some people pull out a, you know, remote and turn it on. I could see it that way, but it was. It was riveting.
Tony Kornheiser
It was really cool. Yeah, it was really cool. And again, NBC, they got 20 moving parts. It's all live. And it's great. It's great. They, it, they. It's a great television show. It reminds me. And they're doing it live, which is different. Do you remember when the Indy 500 was on tape and what a great television show that was?
Michael Wilbon
God, it was tape. You know, tape is not.
Tony Kornheiser
No, it's not.
Michael Wilbon
Tape is not realistic. And, and, and look, there are two things that, you know, nobody misses them because people aren't. People are all old and of today. I mean, young and of today, and they don't care. But to not have the Kentucky Derby and big races like that, the Breeders cup and all these things that. To have that. To not have that and to not have heavyweight championship boxing. We're not. The culture is not better. No, it's worse off.
Tony Kornheiser
No, it's not better at all. It's not better to have kick fighting. It's not.
Michael Wilbon
You don't have junk. You don't have championship fights. And they used to. As you know, Tony, there used to be times of the year where promoters like Don King would have. Like, we'd have a championship fight right about now.
Tony Kornheiser
So, as always, you'd go to Vegas, you know, 3,000 degrees.
Michael Wilbon
Yes. Because we. I would watch 3,000 NBA playoffs in Caesar. In a sports book.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
While waiting for the big fight.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, yes.
Michael Wilbon
And it would be just. But there's no. There's no big fight.
Tony Kornheiser
There's no big.
Michael Wilbon
No one horse race. I don't like the. When is the Belmont in September? I don't know.
Tony Kornheiser
The Belmont's in June. It goes two weeks, three weeks. It goes that way. All right, I'll talk to you later.
Guest 3
All right.
Tony Kornheiser
Tom Michael Wilbon, boys and girls. We'll take a break. Pat40, who was at the Kentucky Derby, will join us when we return. I'm Tony Kornheiser.

Once again, this is Sean Tweedley. This is called Scenes from Boardwalk. He's really good. Yes, he is, Michael. If people like Sean Tweedley want to send in their original music, we play it on the podcast. How do they do it?
Guest 1
Send us your music by emailing it to jingles@tonyfournisershow.com and with the new month, I'm proud to announce a new Johnny O Code. No, no, we're updating this. TKB's. We're all about the pollinators.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, yeah, we won pollinators.
Guest 3
TKB's.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Guest 1
Johnny O's. It's the bee's knees.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, it's wonderful.
Guest 1
Get geared up.
Tony Kornheiser
A phrase that was used 100 years ago, the bee's knees. That's great. Plays in Pad 40. And we've had a number of notes. Rob Stronick wrote in and Charlie Fishel from Virginia Beach, Virginia, wrote in. And they said, well, just. I'll share Charlie's. I wanted to share my weekend David Aldrich moment when I saw Pat 40 on television standing behind the winning owner of the Kentucky Derby. It's hard to miss him as he was wearing a Mizzou journalism ball. Captain, that was you. How did you get that kind of access? And how many People have told you, whoa, I saw you on tv.
Guest 3
I don't know how many alums there are from the University of Missouri. I, you know, hundreds of thousands, maybe billions I heard from all of them have contacted me, and I'm waiting. Excuse me, I'm waiting now for the school to request more donations from me, but that sort. What happened there. And this usually is what happens. One of the great things about horse racing is, you know, there's. There's a lot of access to people, and the winning trainer usually gets waylaid on his way to the winner's circle. They're waiting for the horse, and he's got a few minutes, and so he gets jumped. And NBC, you know, had him there. And Tim Layden of NBC, formerly Sports Illustrated, was right there next to me. And so, yeah, we end up getting great product placement for the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
Tony Kornheiser
I was, you know, I saw it and I thought to myself, well, he must have this horse. Pat must have thought Sovereignty would win. Pat had to have staked himself out with Bill Mott. Probably knows him. Similar ages, similar backgrounds. Is any of that true?
Guest 3
No.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Guest 3
I mean, I do know him, and I've, you know, I've covered him, shoot, for 35 years at Churchill Downs.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Guest 3
So that. That part is true. But I was picking journalism. One of the reasons I wore the hat, really, just for kind of play on words. But the. The rest of it just kind of fell into place. And that's, you know, again, the beauty of horse racing. You're just like, oh, you just won the Kentucky Derby. Let me saddle up right next to here and start asking you questions.
Tony Kornheiser
It was a great race. It was a great last quarter. It was fabulous that all the horses looked the same at the end of the race because they're covered in mud. What did you think of the race?
Guest 3
Yeah, even the gray horses were brown at the end of the race. It was great. No, it was fantastic. And I will have to say to toot my own horn a little bit, it played out almost exactly the way I thought it would, except I thought journalism would be further ahead of Sovereignty and Hold up, and it would be. One, journalism, two, Sovereignty. I'm not surprised. Alba was third. I had the trifecta, and I had the exacta.
Tony Kornheiser
Good job.
Guest 3
But I thought that it was going to be Citizen Bull coming out at a scorching pace.
Tony Kornheiser
Which he did. Which he did.
Guest 3
Yeah. That was really the only choice. Set the pace, and then after a mile would be basically torched and done. And everybody who was at the front near him, was going to be torched and done because the pace was too fast and that it would set up for everybody else to close. So that's what happened. But this. I think this is a very good group of horses, Tony. I mean, I think Sovereignty looked great, has a great record. Journalism, same thing. Baezas are coming on hard, and I think by the Belmont could be the horse to beat. Final Gambit is getting better, so I think this is a. Could be. If the. If the horse owners and trainers will actually run the horses, we can have a fun spring and summer. Watching them.
Tony Kornheiser
I was fearful that horses would break their legs running in the slop. It didn't happen, I'm glad to say, but I was fearful. Were you?
Guest 3
No, not. Not too much. Although it was truly the stickiest track I have ever walked on. I mean, it was. People literally, you know, they do the walkover. If you have connections with the horse and you start on the backside and you walk along the track to the front, and it's a great moment. You know, it's really fun for the people involved. And the fans all across the grandstand are cheering and everything. It's really cool. Except for the fact that people kept literally losing their shoes, women especially, that were not outfitted with the right shoes, having their shoes come off because it was so sticky, but, you know, they sealed it, and I think that it was solid enough of a surface that it was not going to be a danger to the horses.
Tony Kornheiser
So my first inclination when I see a horse race like that is to say, this is great. We're going to see him in the Preakness. They're going to be joined by Rodriguez, the second Bafford horse that was scratched for this. And the Preakness is going to be great. And then I started reading yesterday that there is some doubt that the winner that Sovereignty will run in the Preakness. Can you update that?
Guest 3
Yeah, I mean, we'll see. I can tell you this, Bill Mott does not sound very enthusiastic about it. Godolphin, the ownership group from Saudi Arabia, Middle East. Yeah, yeah. Has said it's. It's Mott's decision. We'll see if that's true. And I think if it is fully Mott's decision, the horse will probably go to the Belmont and not the Preakness. But Godolphin may say, you know, this is too important. We can. And the horse, the sport needs us to be there in Baltimore. So we'll see. Mott is definitely not, you know, the kind of guy that likes to bring a horse back on two weeks rest and, you know, so there's, I think, a real competing instinct here of what he thinks is best for the horse and what people think is best for the sport.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you expect either. Either or both journalism and Rodriguez to go in the Preakness?
Guest 3
Rodriguez, yes. Baffert said as much that he will point him towards the Preakness and he should be a load to handle their journalism. I kind of doubt it, but they haven't declared yet. Okay, and then we'll see on that. Baeza has declared for the Belmont, not the Preakness.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, let's move to something far more important, which is that your daughter is killing it in spin class. We are getting emails about this. What can you tell us about this?
Guest 3
So. Oh, my gosh, isn't it amazing? The Kornheiser community is everywhere, including. I was Lachesa Reed many times at Churchill Downs over the weekend.
Tony Kornheiser
Tremendous. Tremendous.
Guest 3
So, yes. So she was home from Peru, and she'd been in the Peace Corps for two years, came home and has spent January, February, March trying to get another job in the public health sector. And you can probably figure out how that's going with the way the administration has been working.
Tony Kornheiser
That's right.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah.
Guest 3
Yeah. So anyway, she. So she was spending, you know, a lot of her downtime, which she had plenty of, other than applying for other. For jobs that didn't exist, going to work out. And so, yes, she was a regular at the spin class at Genesis Health Club.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. People wrote us and they said we can't compete with her. She joined everyone. So we want her to move to Boston and go to Harvard, get out of the spin class. So I hope that's.
Guest 3
Yes, she took a job as research project manager, School of Public Health at Harvard. And so, yes, it'll be a different spin class that has to deal with her now.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, so this puts us into the swimming realm. And one of her teammates in college. Yes. Was Katie Ledecky, or were they separate? Yeah, they were teammates at Stanford, by the way, it's not a bad resume. Stanford, Harvard. It's. It's so bad. Okay, bad. It's not Binghamton, but it's not bad.
Guest 3
Binghamton or Missouri, I don't know. She went wrong.
Tony Kornheiser
Right? Yeah. So Katie Ledecky did something that I don't want to say is unthinkable because it's Katie Ledecky, but we are conditioned to think that swimmers in their late twenties have really gone over the hill. And she Broke a record that she's owned for a million years, but she broke the 800 record. Your thoughts about that?
Guest 3
Yeah, I mean, I think it's one of the most amazing things that's ever happened in the sport of swimming. Especially women at age 28 are not set in world records, especially when it's their own record that she set previously when she was 19 in Rio de Janeiro at the Olympics. And I mean, it's just unbelievable. According to my research, and I spent a lot of time yesterday looking this up, nobody's ever broken a record they once had. As far down the road as nine years. There's been a few people done it seven years and eight years, but nine years, unheard of. And the distance at, you know, 800 meters, it's just. It's astounding. You know, she's. She's a marvel that you. You never can say, oh, she can't do that, because she will find a way to do whatever it is. I was convinced her fastest swims of her life were behind her. Dead wrong. Happy to be dead wrong, because I love her, but she keeps. She keeps doing it. And clearly the training at the University of Florida has been great. Her training group and, you know, she'll be in Los Angeles in 2028 and probably be a medal contender and a medal winner and maybe even a gold medal winner.
Tony Kornheiser
We did happy birthday last week or the week before to Darragh Taurus, who I believe Pat, won an Olympic medal at age 41, a sprint medal at age 41. Is. Am I correct on that?
Guest 3
Yes. Yeah, she did medal. She did not win gold, But. But she did medal. Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Isn't that. I mean, is she the most amazing one, other than Katie Ledecky that's 41 years old?
Guest 3
Yeah. I mean, and really had kind of been out of the sport for quite a while. You know, it's not like she had been training and competing all along. You know, she left the sport. I think she had a kid by that point. You know, she was a mom. And you know, that. That one absolutely came out of left field. Now, again, I think it's easier to go 50 meters or 100 meters than 800.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Guest 3
Faster than you've ever been, but yeah, that's. That's the. That's the outer edge. Do something in your 40s. Absolutely.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, I will get you out of here on this, because I know you have to pay attention to this, too, because of college football. Do you have any. It's a week out. Shador Sanders, do you have any thoughts as to why he dropped like such a stone in the draft?
Guest 3
Well, you know, I only know what I've read, and I think it basically sounds like the NFL collectively decided they didn't like his attitude. Having interviewed him several times, not necessarily one on one, but in group settings. I liked talking to him. I thought he was smart, had some charisma. There were times he would push back on questions. And maybe the NFL, they're so used to people, you know, bowing and scraping because it's like, please draft me. As the outlook there that. That they were offended by that. Maybe he was choosy enough to think, I don't want to play for that team, so I don't have to treat this interview respectfully. I don't know. But, you know, I wonder. I mean, I think he's pretty darn good player. I thought he was the second or third best quarterback in the draft, and that isn't how it worked out for him. But the good news, I would imagine, is he did get picked. If he needed to be humbled, he's probably humbled. And now he's going to get a chance like everybody else on a Browns quarterback roster that is a complete mess.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I mean, I'm sorry he has to go play for that ownership, but I also think that's a pretty good coach there, Stefanski. I think it's a pretty good circumstance because you can walk in and you can win that job. And I was. I was sort of amazed that people thought that Deion Sanders son was going to, like, be a shrinking violet. Were you people nuts? You know? What are you talking about?
Guest 3
So, honestly, that. That's kind of what hit me. Like, really? Oh, geez. He has a little brash confidence to him. Oh, whose son is he? Makes sense the other thing, too, like this talk of, well, you know, it's you. You're not playing him. It's just gonna be a circus with Dion. First of all, Dion has another job. He's not gonna be sitting there, you know, in your facility saying, hey, why aren't you playing my son? He may tweet something, but who cares? This is the NFL. People are acting like, oh, we can't be criticized. Oh, there'd be too big a circus. The entire NFL is a circus. That's all it is.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Guest 3
Oh, it'd be too much media attention. They're gonna be a bunch of cameras around. Oh, really? It's the NFL. There's a lot of that. So I just. The whole.
Tony Kornheiser
The.
Guest 3
The excuses beyond. I don't like his attitude. If the attitudes the thing, fine. But the rest of this stuff kind of irritates me and I think it continues this pattern of people kind of almost gratuitously taking shots at Deion Sanders.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Who's only successful. That's all he is in everything he's ever done everything. And he lets you know it. Okay. It's good. All right. Plug your podcast for us.

It's a very sexy Phillips, right, Phil, Philip, thanks to our guests today, Michael Wilbon and Pat40. Thanks as well to today's sponsors. Remember, you can listen to us on Apple podcasts Spotify and Odyssey. Get the show through Apple. Please leave us a review. We have a haiku for the Kentucky Derby from Shad sort of on the Kentucky Derby on the way we covered the Kentucky Derby. Nothing better than Andy Beyer on racing Harbinger of Spring. Andy doesn't get the Derby right. Yeah, and he didn't get the Derby right. Andy. He doesn't get the Derby right. I was convinced he was right this time.
Guest 4
Yeah, I was too.
Tony Kornheiser
John Fitzpatrick, our friend John in Arvada, Colorado. I had to write in say how much I love the tradition of having Andy Byer on in advance of the Triple Crown races. His expertise is unquestioned and is amplified by his gargles with bourbon and broken glass delivery classic. And the speed figure is genuine analytic gold, not hocus pocus junk. Eat it, Wilbon. P.S. the Derby also makes it the season watch premier horse racing comedy Let It Ride with Richard Dreyfuss and the dearly departed Terry Garr and David Johansson. You might be walking around lucky not even know it. I know the name of the movie. I never saw it.
Guest 4
Oh, it's worth watching.
Tony Kornheiser
I never saw.
Guest 4
Dreyfus is terrific in it. It's great.
Tony Kornheiser
Jeff Fishel writes us from Richmond, Virginia. A proud skinny Atlas Laker, class of 1976. That's town in upstate New York, a lake town. Rob Stronach is from there. Skinny Atlas, New York. Harvey's from there. My friend Gooch has had a lake house there for 100 years. And Jeff Fishel writes, I enjoyed hearing the story of Tony's dinner with Harvey Stenger. And clothes are photographs of the 1975 Skinny Atlas High school baseball team. In the team photo, Harvey's fifth from left and I am second from left. Harvey was a senior third baseman, I was a junior backup infielder. Harvey was a multi sport athlete, team captain, brilliant study and school leaders, also very humble. Treated everyone as equal even though most of us were not. Harvey's success and visionary leadership at Binghamton is no surprise to me and others who knew him in high school. However, even in high school Harvey was showing signs of becoming an absent minded professor. A couple of examples. Before a home baseball game with our arch rivals Marcellus, I watched Harvey rummaging through his duffel bag before saying oh no, I forgot my glove. So during pregame infield practice, Harvey and I shared my glove to a skill it back and forth. The next day in school I was teased about forgetting to bring my glove to the big game. When I responded it's actually Harvey who forgot his glove. The repeated response I got was Harvey, yeah, sure, loser. No. We had a very successful season, won the league championship and went into sectional play. Before our last sectional game, sitting in the dugout next to Harvey again, I see Harvey rummaging through his duffel bag before saying oh no, I forgot my spikes. As you can probably guess, Harvey and I have the same shoe size. So my David Aldrich moment is watching Harvey Stenger in his final high school athletic event wearing my spikes. Fortunately, the next year Harvey was off to college studying engineering and I could play every game with my own glove and spikes. So as Harvey leads his last commencement at Binghamton, if you observe some random professor sitting on stage not wearing the traditional robe and notice that Harvey's robe is slightly ill fitting, I believe I have an explanation and he has all of these things here and that's great. Matt Abbott Ball, who is our favorite running guy in.
Guest 4
Oh, that's right, yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Matt Abbott Ball writes, Last summer one day I was out in my driveway with my two daughters and noticed several bees swarming a window in front of the house. A few hours later my wife noticed it and mentioned it to me, went back outside, saw that the number was at least 10 times what it was when I saw a few hours earlier. The next day my wife called around and found a beekeeper who we sent photos to he identified them as honeybees and made an hour and a half trek to our house. We noticed that the bees looked like they were making their way into the house under an opening in the soffit above the windows. The bee man, as I came to call him, used an infrared camera to look inside the drywall inside the house and could indeed see multiple honeycombs. He said he'd be back the next day. To make a long story short, he came back at 7am the next day, had to set up a plastic lining all the way around the wall, and then spent several hours vacuuming the bees into a box. When he finished that night around 11pm he had vacuum vacuumed approximately 50 to 60,000 bees.
Michael Wilbon
Wow.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, you read that right. In a matter of days, by his approximation, at least 50,000 bees had created multiple honeycombs inside our walls. Honeybees are truly amazing creatures. He took them back to his bee farm where he and his wife care for over 1.5 million honeybees. Thank God for the bee man and his wife. Some photos are enclosed for news channel 8 where you can see some of the honeycombs they left behind. Wow. That's astonishing. I went out to the world's most expensive flower store yesterday, right. American plant.
Guest 1
Glad you made it home.
Tony Kornheiser
Ye American plan on River Road in Burdette. And I bought two Asters and two Black Eyed Susans that Michael will plant in a good spot for me. And you know what that cost. These are flowers.
Guest 1
Other perennials though, so 50 bucks.
Tony Kornheiser
Wow. 1250 each. Yeah.
Guest 4
So I was sort of got to get into the.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know, it's another one of those things where if they had charged me $300, I mean, I wouldn't have known Rob Lowe. Not that Rob Lowe in North Royalton, Ohio, is a David Aldrich moment when you hear there's another Rob Lowe. Not that Rob Lowe in Orange county is a little. It's a bit unsettling. By the way, the word low is derived from the English language and is defined as the opposite of high. P.S. the traffic in North Royalton. Awful. Bridges on Wallings and state roads are under construction. So if you're trying to get to North Royalton from the east side of the valley, good luck. John Pearson, Milwaukee. I know you're tired of stories of people who tell stories of a shared experience with you, who actually have never met you or mistook you out in the community. It was just like we talked about the other night when we double dated with Cloris Leachman and Marisa Tomei at the prom that people should check their facts before telling stories. Of course, conversation was interrupted when Kevin Bacon ran in and shouted, isn't this supposed to be a party? Let's dance. And the strains of Footloose cranked up. As you know, it was a great night. Capped off when we spotted Alan ald at the 24 hour convenience store buying 30 pints of coffee ice cream. What a great time. From Chris. Ben Sells in Forest Hills, Maryland. I can go for years without watching an NBA game, but good Lord. Brian Windor's description of that shot on Friday's pod. He went eight minutes was absolute poetry. Yes. I don't know what he thought needed workshopping, because that was beautiful. Learn to write, kids. Makes you better at everything. P.S. for all the Maryland Littles out there, Route 24 through Rock State park has finally reopened after being closed for like two years. Graham Larson in Los Angeles. Unless Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble are coming over for dinner, you should always ask your guests how they would like their steak cooked. Sports, gardening, fashion, culinary arts, music, comedy, and waxing poetic. Please don't change a thing. Endless Appreciation. Ben in Port Winemie, California. It doesn't. It's pronounced whiny me and spelled H U E N E M e. Wineme would have gotten that wrong. Yeah. Please ask Michael to share the make and model of his new putter, mentioning a wand edition without identifying its kind as puter. Pure torture to those of us addicted to the game, especially in this era of lie angle balanced hocus pocus junk.
Guest 1
Oh, this is a. This is a Cameron Select. The Catalina model went for something that had a bit more face balance, but still a traditional shape. It's the first time I've ever used anything with a single bend neck, but so far, rolling it very well. Standard loft and lie. So we're at 70 degrees of lie and 3 degrees of loft, which is a bit. I've had it lower at 68 per the standout label from about 15 years ago, but thanks for asking.
Tony Kornheiser
You know what I know about my putter? Nothing.
Guest 4
It's made out of metal.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, it's metal of some sort. And I put a cover on it, which cost me so much more money than I ever imagined. Dan Stoll, Newton, Massachusetts. Willie Nelson is reputed to have said there are two kinds of men in the world. Those that love Linda Ronstadt and those who have never heard of her. Yeah. Yeah.
Guest 4
Because once that good, once you hear.
Tony Kornheiser
Of her, she's that.
Guest 4
Then you love her.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Zach in Livingston, New Jersey. Dear Mr. Tony Shoprite, Livingston, New Jersey. Friday, 12:52pm My dad's chips. They've reached the Garden State. All right. And one more. Sean Fields listening to the pod with my wife, who somehow doesn't get the allure of in depth Knott's bullpen breakdown during Friday's very relatable story about fighting for four months to get a refund credit on your sports jacket. Me. See, he's a man of the people. He's one of us. Her. You mean the guy who eats peanut butter out of a jar and shares it with his dog? If you're out on your bike, sign as always. Do wear wide. How much weight do you think I could bench press?
Michael Wilbon
Just make a guess.
Tony Kornheiser
Ballpark figure.

Get this life Candy doesn't see it let alone black and white if I could paint the picture show you why a painted cross across the sky shines so bright Take your hand and trace around it My heart told me to hang on for dear life Better never ever let it die Leave the ground below you split it into sides Draw the center line and empty. Candy likes the water in her eyes Wrap your arms around me we're going on all right Let me be your guide through this time Candy likes the water in her eyes in her eyes There's a man on his bike Selling posters and pipes on a Sunday and the girl by his side was an angel in white he'd say I'm alive and it's all because of you and you because of me we did our thing on you, didn't we? As a painter who's blind can't help but find all the real need With a touch of the brush she allows all of us to see There's a lost and lonely man Knees up, heading hands and mumbling to no one.
