Previously on the Tony Kornizer Show. Harvey says, what are we going to have? And I said, I thought we'd have meat and potatoes. And his answer comes right back very quickly. It goes like this. Who doesn't like meat and potatoes? And I had that chilling feeling in the back, lower back of my spine that, oh, my God, he doesn't. He's a vegetarian. He's, you know, gluten free. He's the healthiest guy I know and he is just saying this to me. And then he'll go home and induce vomiting so that he can get rid of the food. The Tony Kornheiser show is on now. Got a nice note from Harvey yesterday that he listened to that on his way. He was driving to New York City with Sheila Doyle. Sheila 10, folks. Yeah, we like Sheila very much. And they listened and they laughed and that made me very happy. Chris is here with us today.
Nigel
Hello, friends.
Tony Kornheiser
Which is Chris doing his gym Nance here. So I have. I just want to get to some news, some nats news. They did exactly what they had to do. They DFA'd pooch. They just said, get out, pooch. No more. No, no more dfa. They can never come back. Say it ain't so. His era was over 13 something really bad. And they won last night. And they won because their bullpen was good. And. And our guy, Jose A. Ferrera. I hate who I hate.
Nigel
I've always been behind him.
Chris
Terrific actor Cruz came up big in.
Tony Kornheiser
That eighth, you know, so I. I just. Did someone steal home for the nuts?
Chris
Yes. But it was Had a little league quality to it. There was a runner on first cs.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Chris
It wasn't like eventually did get home.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Nigel
Have you. Can I quickly.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Nigel
Have you ever heard the conspiracy theory that Jackie Robinson, you know, that famous play where he steals home, was actually out?
Tony Kornheiser
He wasn't out.
Nigel
I know he was safe. He was called safe. But I went down this deep rabbit.
Tony Kornheiser
Hole of these people who think he was out. I've seen it. I thought it was safe.
Nigel
Right.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Brian Windhorst
Just.
Nigel
Sorry.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. So anyway, they DFA'd pooch and they brought up some other guy who Nathaniel Lowe knows from playing with him last year and likes and says has a great mustache, you know, wears pants real high and it's okay.
Chris
Nathaniel is now in charge of the team.
Tony Kornheiser
He should be.
Brian Windhorst
But how could he be?
Nigel
How could any player they bring be worse than Pooch? I mean, honestly, like, I mean, no, they can't just based on performance.
Tony Kornheiser
Sims, Pooch, Lopez, Ferrer. But last night the bullpen was good. I'm going to give them all the credit in the world. You need to know this. Last night was the first calendar day of May in April. The Nats had the highest ERA and the highest walk percentage. They're bullpen. You can't walk. That's all they do is walk and give up triples. Yeah. You know, and last night, another runner.
Nigel
Oh, my.
Chris
The replay looked out.
Nigel
I thought that I was like, oh, my gosh.
Tony Kornheiser
He.
Nigel
We get the first two outs. This is going to be a 1, 2, 3. And then I'm listening on the radio and it's like, high bouncer. It's over Tana's head. And I'm like, all right, well, it'll be a double.
Tony Kornheiser
They're like.
Nigel
And he slide safe in a third. I'm like, how do you get the third? Because I was listening on the radio. Like, I didn't.
Tony Kornheiser
I mean, so anyway, they won. So that's.
Chris
That's 10 out of their 14 wins comes via the save.
Nigel
It's amazing.
Tony Kornheiser
Josh Bell not hitting. No Josh P. Dom Smithing. He's Dom Smithing. Why does he play? That's. He plays every night. It's the DH every night. Cuz he's. He's switch hitter.
Chris
You'd think the DH gives you the most flexibility to, I don't know, bring up a young player, say you got a month, try and bang it out of the park.
Tony Kornheiser
Just. They got four outfielders. The one who's not playing make them the dh.
Chris
Well, the DH isn't generally your best hitter, is it? It's still new in the league. They're trying to figure it out.
Nigel
It's right there in the name of the job. Designated hitter.
Tony Kornheiser
I'm not following that.
Nigel
Well, he has a point. Negative 0.8.
Brian Windhorst
War.
Tony Kornheiser
Josh Bell. It's not very good. Anyway. Some are worse. I had. I wanted to talk about gifts that we've gotten. Just because I need to say this out loud. Who's our chocolate guy? The guy who sent us all the Hershey's chocolate.
Chris
I can't remember if the top is very nice.
Tony Kornheiser
He'll write us. He'll write us. And he sent us a whole bunch of Hershey's chocolate. And included in the Hershey's chocolate, which. I've not had the chocolate yet. I've not had it.
Chris
There's an order.
Tony Kornheiser
Nigel, you've had it. Yes. I haven't. Very good. Okay. But he sent a package of pretzels with Reese's Peanut butter inside. These are great. These are great. Can you buy these in a store? I assume. I didn't know that was a Hershey's product.
Chris
They were originally given out to me. I was going to mail them out. I get the emergency call, bring them back. I'll make a trade.
Tony Kornheiser
You are.
Nigel
You are like a drug dealer with them. You were pushing them on Michael and I this morning. Try these. You'll love them.
Tony Kornheiser
Really? Really.
Chris
Gotta get our summer bodies in order.
Tony Kornheiser
I know. I could be eating. They're really good. I'm a big photo shoot fan.
Nigel
You can buy them. They're. Oh, there's a bin of them available at Target, and I mean a large bin for $7.49.
Tony Kornheiser
They're really good. And that's not my. My favorite pretzel is Uncle Jerry's Pretzels. Broken pretzels. Michael calls them trash bag pretzels. Although he's getting a gift of a bag of those pretzels when they get here.
Chris
If you ever see these out in the wild, the low salt version of their normal pretzel, buy them. They're fantastic.
Tony Kornheiser
I get the no salt.
Chris
You get the no salt version.
Nigel
And you get the burnt.
Tony Kornheiser
Right. Burned burn. Nigel, you like them?
Chris
I do.
Tony Kornheiser
I do. I confess.
Nigel
They taste a little bit like poison.
Tony Kornheiser
No, they're really good.
Chris
It does. It does feel like it would pair with the scotch.
Tony Kornheiser
I want to thank. That is the taste. I want to thank the chocolate. So I'm very happy. Are these the pretzels? Is it sort of like that? Okay, then we can obtain those. I don't want us to Obtain them.
Chris
We did send out some PB and J.
Nigel
Why would we pay money?
Chris
Which I'm not sure you're ready to try.
Tony Kornheiser
No, I don't want. I'm not. I'm not a PB and J guy. I confess. That's not.
Nigel
But you're a PB guy.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. Peanut butter. The jelly involved in it. I don't like peanut butter. I eat peanut butter. I take a small spoon and out of the large thing of peanut butter, Jif or whatever peanut butter it is, I just sit and eat it with.
Nigel
A spoon like a hobo.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. I really like it.
Nigel
Sure.
Chris
To the point that we've had to label our peanut butters. Because you share a tub with the dog.
Tony Kornheiser
Right, right. I do that.
Nigel
Oh, well, that seems all above board.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't see what the issue is there. Let me get to the wine thing. I want to get to the wine thing. We have had in our careers here, we have had four different people who stand out as producing wine or making wine available, if not the actual production. We started by mentioning Duska Jensen, if you remember, a few years back.
Chris
That's right.
Tony Kornheiser
From Willamette Valley. Dammit. Ambassador. Wine Ambassador. Then we got hooked up with Dave Spector and Bells up and Bells up and those are both Oregon wineries. Bells up and Willamette. That's right. Are Oregon wineries. And littles have gone to Bells up and always happy. Always right about. Always get a great review. Dave and his wife are. And stuff like that. Then we had Katie from Cake Bread who was a godsend. She's a complete godsend. She also sent us some basil. Is that how it's pronounced? Bezel Wine. That's great.
Nigel
Is that the one that you wandered in to and started randomly drinking the wine? Right. At Pinehurst.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, Pinehurst. These are for us, Right? We thought it was.
Nigel
Is this a party for me?
Tony Kornheiser
We thought it was a post golf party for the people who were involved in the golf. And it turned out it was a thing to do.
Chris
Nothing says post round refresher like a glass of Chardonnay.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. So it was great.
Nigel
Take about eight or 10 of these.
Chris
Just a splash more, please.
Tony Kornheiser
Katie from Cake Bread is a couple ice. But there was Al. There's also Cindy Wenslow. Sydney Wentzlau has or had now because she's out of the business. She had a winery in Southern California and I have bought a couple of cases of wine from her. She wrote me a note once that she liked PTI and she was in the wine business and sent me stuff And. And when people send you stuff, when it's done, then you buy stuff. Of course, you don't keep saying, send me more stuff. Unless it's peanut butter and pretzels. No, no. Unless it's my dad's chips, because that's different. And we're invested in my dad's chips doing well and becoming, you know, the school.
Chris
You smile every time that you see a bag of my dad's chips in a new store.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Chris
When you see that in the wild.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, it's great. Because this is a very, very small local company that's expanding and keeping quality. And so I'm very happy for them. Yes, I'm very happy for them. But Cindy Winslow wrote me a note the other day that. That they are getting out of the wine business, and they had some wine left and did I want some? So I said this to Michael. And so I did say to her, you know, send me an assortment and, you know, whatever you want. She said, do you just want the Pinot Noir? I said, no, send me whatever you want, because my dermatologist the other day suggested I drink a little less red wine and a little bit more white wine because of skin cancer and rosacea and stuff like that. So I'm perfectly happy to do it. I had a Sauvignon Blanc last night. I had the Basil Sauvignon Blanc. It was fabulous.
Chris
Nice.
Tony Kornheiser
It was fabulous. So, I mean, I'm not. I'm not.
Chris
You know, I have an Italian white.
Tony Kornheiser
For you to try, so we'll do that. So I wrote her a note. I wrote her a note and I said, here's my phone number. Call me and we'll give you the credit card. She hasn't done that yet, so I'm just. I wonder if it didn't go through. I mean, I think maybe you don't.
Nigel
Have to pay for it.
Tony Kornheiser
No, I wouldn't want to pay for it. So what do we get here? And also speaking of things that make us happy, Jason Small, GM of the Syracuse Mets. He writes this as I write this email. Dom Smith. Yes, that Dom Smith is currently at bat for the Scranton Rail Riders. I thought you might be interested to know he's hitting.190 with one home run and four doubles for the Yankees Triple A affiliate. God bless him for hanging in there, but he's not product. It's like Josh Bell. These are power positions.
Nigel
They're productive. You cannot have corner infielders or outfielders hit.130.
Tony Kornheiser
No.
Nigel
I mean, unless they're like Schwarber and they hit 150.
Tony Kornheiser
But they hit 42 home runs. Right?
Nigel
I mean, that's the only way.
Chris
Yeah, they changed the outlook.
Tony Kornheiser
Right. The Littles are getting restless as they are a group that likes to plan. Hopefully you can let them know that we are just dumb enough to continue Lachis a Re night once again this season. I look forward to the special Lecheeserie Night Part 4. Quattro Fromaggio Brilliant. Will take place on Tuesday, September 9th versus the Worcester Woo Socks. Oh, the Woo song. That's a Red Sox.
Chris
Yeah, Red Sox aaa.
Tony Kornheiser
We will set up a room rate for Littles and discount a ticket platform through the usual channels of the Facebook group pages. The invitation to you, Michael, Nigel and all family and guests is open as usual for you to decline. I will send updates as the activities for the night unfold along with Dom Smith updates as he continues his barrage on Triple A picture. We'll also send a great big box of that of Syracuse Mets and Syracuse salt potatoes merchandise soon. And as always, please tell Jake Cafner to eat it. Jason Smores. We love him. Yes.
Nigel
Best thing out of Syracuse in a long time.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. You're not a Syracuse God.
Nigel
Well, yeah, that's probably fair.
Tony Kornheiser
You've got that nice note from.
Chris
It's your boy, Eric Dievendorf.
Nigel
I did get a nice note for Eric Dievendorf.
Tony Kornheiser
He made it seem like you were really great.
Nigel
Yeah, we're buds.
Tony Kornheiser
I felt like Kissinger getting you guys together.
Nigel
You know, just for record, Georgetown did beat Syracuse this year. So Syracuse in general can just eat it.
Tony Kornheiser
I should say this. I haven't talked about it in a while. I wore a tie last night. An orange and blue striped tie that was given to me. It was dropped off at my house in Delaware by people who thought I should have it. And it's a really nice tie. It was nice. Chris isn't gonna like it because it's a Syracuse color.
Chris
Is it worn by Buddy?
Tony Kornheiser
It is. It is the official tie of the Newhouse School. It says. It says Newhouse on the back.
Nigel
It's a great communications and journalism school, I'll give them that.
Tony Kornheiser
It is. Whatever it is, it's not Georgetown.
Nigel
I mean, you know, I mean, what is.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, it's not. George.
Nigel
The Harvard of Washington, D.C. yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Or as we used to say of Harper College. We were the Cornell of Broome County. So, you know. Yeah, we were there. So all of these said what? You're looking at me oddly.
Chris
Did your merchant issued credit finally post?
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, with the territory ahead. Yeah. I mean, it Took months. It took months. And then they say I'm smiling.
Chris
For the greatest extended conversation when you were stuck in 270 traffic about the process of trying to return something and see the credit for.
Tony Kornheiser
On your four months to credit, let me just say this. I love American Express. I mean, I think they're a really worthy company. I called them up three or four days ago, five days ago, and I said, look, I sent back this item that I bought from the Territory Ahead.
Chris
At your own expense.
Nigel
Called them up.
Tony Kornheiser
My own expense. I know they got it because I received confirmation with a name of somebody who picked it up. So I know they've had it. It's a sport jacket. It's too big. It doesn't fit. It's not what I want. I have returned it at my own expense. Four months ago. January, early January.
Chris
I'm a check and it's.
Tony Kornheiser
And you know, and it's never been credited to my account. And I said, I think it's about $129. I was guessing $120, $29. The guy at American Express says, you've been a member here for 50 years. We're going to give you. Give it to you, Mr. Porthauser.
Nigel
Thank you. Service.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. And then three days later, I get an email from the Territory Ahead saying they had credited this to my American Express. So is that double double dipping? No, no. What had to have happened onto something. What had to have happened was American Express called them. Yes. And said, what's the deal? Yeah, what's the deal? So they began to take credit for this.
Chris
Does amateur have an enforcer weasel territory ahead?
Tony Kornheiser
And then you can call us or you can text us. And I hit the thing I was supposed to do and I wrote, I wrote in an email, this is not acceptable. I'm never buying anything from you again. I waited four months for this and you had to be strong armed into doing this. And now you're coming around saying we're benevolent. Dare you, sir, get out of here.
Chris
How dare you give me my money back.
Tony Kornheiser
So then they, they said we would call you. So they called and I just said, no. You know, I called and they read from a script. You know, we're sorry how you feel, but look what we've done and it's okay now.
Chris
And I said, dear sir, madam.
Tony Kornheiser
I said, yeah, you just sir or madam, would you read my book? It took me years to write. Would you take a look Based on a novel by Manly and learn. I need a break and I want to be a paper cop. No, And I just said, no, no, you don't get credit. No. And they apologize and all of that. I don't know.
Chris
Well, you get credit, they don't get credit.
Tony Kornheiser
I will say this. If I get the 129 and I get.
Chris
It's already cleared.
Tony Kornheiser
And the other thing is 147. It turned out to be 140, I will tell American Express, take that back. Take the 129 back. Take it back.
Nigel
Have you. I know you don't.
Tony Kornheiser
Everybody. Everybody with returns. This happens with.
Chris
There have been issues with returns because people have tried to scam companies by returning other items. So they've had to do a. I didn't do that. Better diligence in protecting their.
Nigel
I know you don't write anymore.
Tony Kornheiser
No, I don't.
Nigel
In Adventures in Customer Service. Memoir would really hit, I think if.
Chris
We get Greg Garcia on board.
Nigel
Tragicomedy.
Chris
Just where do you find the time to follow up on these lines of inquiry?
Nigel
Incredible.
Tony Kornheiser
Where do I find the time? I do a half hour show every day. I got plenty of time.
Nigel
It's incredible.
Chris
I gotta call you back. I gotta call up AMX real quick.
Nigel
I know I make this point every time I'm on the show, but the amount of money that you make, the opportunity cost, and how much money, if you broke it in, you make an hour versus the hour you spend on the phone. It makes no sense for you to try to recoup.
Tony Kornheiser
It's fairness. It's a fairness. It's a fairness issue. We all buy in. We all buy into, you know, the outline of fairness. And if we do A, B and C, D, E and F is supposed to happen. When it doesn't happen, you go, what? This is not right.
Nigel
It's literally my. Of the many things I admire about you, it is the thing. I like them. I find it the most appealing. People like, people say to me all the time, is Tony really like that? I'm like, yeah, he's exactly like.
Brian Windhorst
That's not.
Tony Kornheiser
It's not a bit. No. All right, we're done here. So Brian Windhorst when we return, I'm Tony Kornheiser. This is the Tony Kornheiser Show. Mother's Day is almost here and it's the perfect time to reflect on everything moms do to make life better. Brian Windhorst
This is the Tony Kornheiser Show.
Tony Kornheiser
Tony Kornheiser Show. We are sent this by our friend Michael Granberry who picks out the best singers in the world.
Chris
Yes, he does.
Tony Kornheiser
Back in July 2023, the Tony Kornheiser show played for the first time the music of Aaron Propp and Larry Roy. And what did that lead to? Well, Aaron says a guy that would be a little showed up at their concert in Canada, where they live, saying he came to the show because he heard their music on Tony's show and liked it. Erin and her musical collaborator Larry Roy have produced two albums. Their debut record, Courage My Love and this is Courage My Love, Right won best jazz album of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. And their second, We All Want the Same Things or We Want all the Same Things drew even more praise for Larry's guitar gifts and Aaron's sincere and soulful vocals. Michael Granberry doesn't miss. He does not Michael Granberry doesn't miss. These people are wonderful. Aaron Propp and Larry Roy playing and singing Courage My Love. And playing in Brian Windhorst, who gets up at three in the morning in order to be on the Get up show and has to attend a meeting to know what is going to be asked. I'm much easier than that. I, I asked the things that, that are just about what was on the highlights that I saw because I don't stay up and actually watch games. Let me start with this. It's philosophical. Really glad that, that the Knicks. Now I'm not so glad the Knicks won. I'm happy for the Knicks. I'm glad they won in six because if it had gone seven and they had won in seven, there was that game that they shouldn't have won. And this way at least you can say to yourself, well, justice was sort of kind of served. How do you feel on that?
Brian Windhorst
You know, I hadn't thought about that, but that's, that's a very good point. You know, if you were a Pistons fan. And you know the crazy thing about this series, Tony, they 5G5. The visiting team won five of the six games.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, really? Well. And they were all under six points. All of them. You know.
Brian Windhorst
Yeah. The Knicks won three games in Detroit in the series.
Tony Kornheiser
I didn't know that.
Brian Windhorst
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And that's like the Nats World Series. Yeah. Where all road teams won in seven game series. I didn't realize that.
Brian Windhorst
Yeah. Very unusual. And they won last night by three. And that was their largest win of the three games in Detroit. And that came on a miracle. Not a miracle, but an incredible play. Yes. That was a very, you know, you can make. And I'm a big believer in, you know, nothing ever comes down to one play. And you know, there was that particular game where the referee missed the foul on Tim Hardaway. There was probably five or six things in the last, you know, 45 minutes, 45 seconds to a minute that all went the Knicks way. And you could say, well, any of those, the Pistons do any of those six better that they win. But that, that falls on deaf ears. If I'm a Pistons fan. I'm like, we're down one point and a guy gets styled on a three. Yeah, we're winning this game if they blow the whistle, 95%. So, yes, I'm glad you brought that up. I may steal that in. Please do many interviews.
Tony Kornheiser
No, no, you, you have to talk constantly to 20,000 people at ESPN.
Andy Beyer
So.
Tony Kornheiser
Absolutely.
Brian Windhorst
Still, I'll say that I gave you credit and it was cut.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. That's all you have to do. So. So, I mean, and it brings up the Knicks. Bring up to me, Brunson. This pains me because Wilburn loves Brunson, of course, because he's from Chicago. Had Brunson been from Wyoming, he wouldn't care about him at all. But he's from Chicago. But Brunson is great. Brunson is great. When they lose, it's because Brunson wasn't great. And when they win, it's because he is. And he is more often than he is. And I don't think they can beat Boston. I really don't. But I think Brunson's awfully good. Did he come out of nowhere?
Brian Windhorst
Not really out of nowhere. I mean, he was a champion in college and he was really, really good. You know, the one thing about Brunson, even though his role in, you know, overall his role in Dallas was diminished somewhat because he was sharing time with Luka Doncic. He was great in the playoffs, like from day one, he was great in the playoffs. I mean, you could tell, I mean, you maybe couldn't have foreseen that he was going to be one of the great clutch players in the modern era of the NBA. But you could tell that this guy did not get bothered by tough. By tough moments. Help me workshop something here because, you know, I got get up, I got first take.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Brian Windhorst
Sports centers. I got NBA today. Who should I. This play that he makes where he goes left and sticks his foot in the ground like a great running back.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Brian Windhorst
Who is the. You know, I was like, it's because, you know, I remember seeing footage of Gale Sayers. The man changed direction. One of the, you know, I was, he was long retired by the time I was cognizant aware. But I remember seeing the highlights of Gale Sayers and being like, oh my God, look at the way he changed directions. But I can't go on TV in 2025 and say he's like Gail Sayers.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, you can if Wilbond's on the show because then you don't have to talk for the next 10 minutes.
Brian Windhorst
Oh, mad Dog Russo would love. We would love that. He took Jim Brown who that play, he sticks his foot on the court there and does this absolute world class pivot. This, this young defender, Sar Thompson. First off, the Thompson twins in general. And you have to be a pretty big NBA fan to be paying attention to this, but I promise you will be. You will be knowing about them in the future. This Week. Amen. Thompson, who plays for the Rockets, he has this. You know, he's playing his first ever elimination game, whatever, against the Warriors. He's Brilliant. He has 25 points, 5 steals, 3 blocks. Amazing. Asar Thompson comes into the Garden, his twin brother playing his first closeout, you know, his first. Facing his first elimination game in the Garden. He has 22 points and plays great defense. And then last night, he had 17. He's not a good offensive player, but. So 17 is great for him. And he's shutting Brunson down. Brunson is 0 of 5 on him. His shoot shooting against him in the second half of this game. At one point in. Late in the fourth quarter, he's so blanketed on him. He gets a shot clock violation because he can't even get squared up because he's got this incredible athleticism, incredible length. So they've got there. I. You know, and I'm. I'm watching Tony, and I'm saying, you can't ISO here like Jalen Brunson cannot ISO. They've got. Carl Towns is fouled out. I mean, Carl Town should be kissing Jalen Brunson.
Tony Kornheiser
He is. He disappears. He disappears late. He does.
Brian Windhorst
Well, he disappears late. Except when he doesn't.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay? But most of the time he does.
Brian Windhorst
You know, he's got this career. He's got this playoff history where he could put up 38 or he could put up eight.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Brian Windhorst
And I don't know what's going to be, but Towns is fouled out, okay? So I'm like, they got to do something. But he's got the last timeout. Tibbs calls the timeout. He's got the play drawn up. I'm like, what is he going to do here? Because he can't have Brunson ISO. We know that Brunson's been isoling for 45 minutes. Every time down, he's dribbling 75 times.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Brian Windhorst
And so they. They run a screen. They run a screen across, but it was what they call a ghost screen, a phantom screen. He stays in the ISO and he moves left. And a sar Thompson knows Jalen Brunson is the heavy left hand, right. You know, he wants to get left. Plus a sar Thompson. He's smart, Tony. He knows that Brunson's right ankle is the one that's giving him problems. He's not necessarily going to go to the right. So he is leaning hard left, and he's thinking to himself, don't let Brunson get the corner turn. Don't Let Brunson get the corner turn. Because if Brunson gets a Sar Thompson on his hip, he's so brilliant at drawing fouls, you know, he doesn't even have to get the shot up on the rim. He can get to that free throw line. You know, this is going through a Sar Thompson set. He's brilliant in this game. Shutting him down at every turn. And so he's like, I'm not gonna let him get left. I'm not letting him get left. And Jalen Brunson sticks that leg into that court and has the world class pivot of all pivots. And Asar Thompson goes sliding past like he's ice skates. What a brilliant play. Brunson crosses him over and steps into a three and drills it. My God, what a play. And I mean, anybody who wants to downplay it because you know it's going to get comparisons to Jordan, you're going to see out there today that you're going to see all these. You're going to run the video. I know we're going to do this on first take. We're going to run the video of Jordan against Byron Russell. Yeah. Because you know, it's a different. He's different spot on the court, but it's the same type of move where he does the hard pivot. And of course he puts his hand on Russell's hip and pushes him, whatever. And people are going to say, how can you compare that to Michael Jordan in Game 6 of the NBA Finals? Whatever, that's fine. He's not Michael Jordan. Fine. My God, what an amazing play between two athletes at the top of their game. I watched it eight times over last night, Tony.
Tony Kornheiser
So I'm gonna give you the strategy. If you're gonna talk, first of all, you could just say everything you just said and everybody would be happy. But if you want to make a comparison, because you're gonna be asked these Questions by people 10 and 12 years older than you, the comparison that they will appreciate most is Barry Sanders. He's the guy.
Brian Windhorst
Good.
Tony Kornheiser
And you can do that. And they'll all understand that Gail Sayers would be a little distant. It would be a comparison that I would make. But you have to play to the audience. And your audience is going to be in their 50s and so they will remember Barry Sanders. We talked yesterday. You were on pti.
Brian Windhorst
Very good, by the way. This is why you're a just a high level professional.
Tony Kornheiser
I am. On a very attractive cable television show. Yeah, I am.
Brian Windhorst
Yeah. I'm going to steal Your. I'm stealing Barry Sanders.
Tony Kornheiser
That's fine. Still, the Nixon Six. Steal that, too.
Brian Windhorst
Okay. And I'm going to steal both those things.
Tony Kornheiser
Thank you. Go ahead. So yesterday on the PTI show, you. You felt. You said that you felt the Milwaukee was going to deal Giannis onto Takounmpo. And I would. I mean, didn't say anything because you're the guest, but. But I wouldn't do that. I mean, unless I could get Joel Embiid with a certifiable piece of paper from a doctor saying he can give me at least 50 games, I wouldn't. Right. I wouldn't trade him for. I wouldn't for anybody. Unless Antetokounmpo said, that's it, I'm done. You know, and he pulls a Kareem and he says, okay, you're going to have to deal me, but is that what you think is going to happen?
Brian Windhorst
I do, and I say that, you know, not having full knowledge, and I, by the way, I think the league is uncertain. You know, Giannis has gone. Giannis and his agent have gone. Take. Taken steps to not have there be speculation about his future. I don't know what he's thinking about this. Let me just say that the Bucs have been championship contenders for seven years. You can debate championship contenders, whatever. You know, they've lost in less the first round, the last three years. You say, well, that's not contention. Well, we know the first year they were a 60 win, number one overall seed. The league is not designed right now to have a team compete for seven years. And there's a couple of reasons. There's a couple of reasons for that. One, the money, they have this. This very punitive repeater tax, where if you're in the tax over and over, it just gets crushing to. You have to rob computer to pay Paul, because to keep acquiring talent, you have to trade away your future draft picks. And so here we are. The Bucs, yes, is 30 years old. All of their key players are older than him. So I'm talking about Bobby Portis, Brook.
Tony Kornheiser
Lopez, Dame Lillard's not gonna come back to 36. Yeah, right.
Brian Windhorst
And they've already traded away Chris Middleton because he aged out. Yeah, right. So they are losing tens of millions of dollars year over year, like, absolutely drowning in red ink, like just immense amounts of. One of their owners, Mark Lazaray, already sold his share, I think, because he was like, I got my championship ring and I don't want to, you know, just be drowning in debt and waiting for Giannis to leave and now Dame is out for a year. And Tony, they don't control. When I say don't control. The. Either, either have traded the pick or they've traded the swap on the pick. In other words, they've traded the value of the pick for their next six drafts.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, they're in bad shape.
Brian Windhorst
So they've got nothing to trade. All of their players are, are old and are all right away. They're all free agents. Other than Dame, which is the guy you don't want to be under contract. Well, he's under contract for 100 million.
Tony Kornheiser
It's just. Yeah.
Brian Windhorst
Okay. And so like you're looking at this and now let me just say this. We've got a very. So a week from Monday is the lottery, the Cooper flag lottery. And there's, there's two or three really good players in this draft. Let's see what happens in this draft and who wins what. Because I'm just going to tell you to keep an eye on the San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio spurs have two picks in the lottery. They've got their own pick and they've got the Atlanta Hawks pick. Now the Hawks pick. The chances of it leaping up are small, but I'm not going to ignore it. Okay. San Antonio spurs got Victor Wembanyama and they got De'Aaron Fox. And what happens if one of their two picks goes into that top four? What happens if both of them go and they've got the rookie of the year, Stefan Castle sitting there?
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, yeah.
Brian Windhorst
If you're, if you're a team like the Bucks and you're like, you know, and I, and I. And the reason I brought up Kareem Abdul Jabbar is because the history of the bucks is this 19. You know, they, when they have Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Lu Alcinder, he changes his name. But they win a championship. As you know, they go to multiple finals, including 1975. They go to the Finals, lose to the Celtics, I believe you said.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Brian Windhorst
Abdul Jabbar asks to be traded and they acquiesce. They trade him to la. They don't get back to the finals, forget about winning the championship. They don't get back to the finals for almost 40 years. So you have a generational player, a championship player in his prime and you trade him. That's a pathway to infamy. So I, I am very aware of what it means to trade a star player in Milwaukee, but I'm looking at their situation and I'm saying running it back doesn't make strategic, competitive, or financial sense. And so while you never want to trade this guy, like, I don't see a way out. Now, maybe you know the general manager, John Horst, who's got a ring, maybe he's got a plan, and maybe he could come on this call with us and say, here's my seven point plan to get us back to the finals, you know, over the next two years before Giannis becomes a free agent. And maybe I would hear that plan and say, john, you know what? This is why you're the pro and I'm not. Let's do it. But I don't see it. And so that's why I think we're headed in that ultimate destination.
Tony Kornheiser
And they could trade him. If they traded him to San Antonio, San Antonio would lose no more than 12 games a year for the next five years.
Brian Windhorst
Well, I'm speculating on San Antonio.
Tony Kornheiser
No, but I've seen that before. I've seen that as well, because you just put him with Wembanyama and Fox, and you trade everybody else, and it's fine. Can I. I don't want to keep you because I know you have to go. I just want to ask one thing. The. The thing with Tyrese Halliburton's dad, that. That had to end this way, right? I mean, whether he's doing this voluntarily, which I suspect is not true, or whether the team or the league has said, we're going to give you a plausible out here, but you can't come back for a while, right? It had to end that way, right?
Brian Windhorst
Yeah. I'm personally sad on this because I know John Halliburton. I've spent a lot of time with him overseas. Tony, because Tyrese has played on the. On the national team several times, and I cover the national team for espn, and, like, we've had, like, two hour breakfasts in Abu Dhabi when everybody we know in America is asleep. You know, we've hung out with each other in Manila. You know, I. I was at the team hotel in Paris last summer when the team came back from winning, and, you know, to see John, you know, in his. You know, Tyrese's mom, Brenda, and with Tyrese and holding the gold medal. He's a wonderful guy. He's a wonderful guy. He's not. He's not. He's not one of these, you know, parents, but he's so proud of his son. He talks trash. He talks trash and, you know, talking trash makes you annoying and makes you disliked by other people. You can't come on the court. No social rules. I mean, it's a safety rule.
Tony Kornheiser
Go sit up there with Caitlin Clark that. Go sit there. You can't be where he was.
Brian Windhorst
Can't. It's a, it's a cardinal rule. He broke it. He's got to pay the punishment. And it's a no brainer. And I'm sad because this is going to be a great series. I really, you know, no one's talking about this series of the, of the, of the four series that we're going to have coming up. My guess is Pacers, Cavs will be the least paid attention to. That's a mistake. The Pacers are a great team. The Cavs are playing their best basketball this season. That could be a real battle. And John's not going to be able to see his son go for it. So that's just disappointing. But it's the right decision.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, thanks for coming on. And now go and do 27 hits. Do the car wash for ESPN. Thank you, Brian.
Brian Windhorst
Have a good weekend.
Tony Kornheiser
Brian Windhorse. Boys and girls, we will take a break. Andy Beyer will join us to preview the Kentucky Derby. I'm Tony Kornheiser. That's your money saying it's time for a McDonald's run. Tony Kornheiser
Script says Biggie's blue balls. Lonzo, take 13. Blue balls just dropped their biggest buzz balls. Uh, let's try a vocal exercise. Buzz Balls, Biggies. Blue balls. Buzz Balls, Biggies. Blue balls.
Chris
Big balls.
Tony Kornheiser
Just Dr. This season with Buzzball. Please read responsibly. Buzz Ball's available in spirit, wine and malt. 15% alcohol by volume. Buzzballs LLC, Carrollton, Texas, you're listening to the Tony Kornheiser Show. The Tony Kornheiser Show. Once again, excuse me. This is Aaron Propp and Larry Roy. This is called Fitting in. It is so dry in here. Even though we've moved a humidifier into. We have.
Chris
You want to take a drink of water?
Tony Kornheiser
That's what I'm gonna do. People can listen to the song. Yes. It's a lovely song. And again, as Tony said, Earlier. It's Michael Granberry sentence it doesn't miss. And he writes. Aaron excels as both a folk artist and a jazz singer. His music is so endearing and soothing. At the end of one of our songs, you will be so entranced, you will truly feel compelled to say serenely and with the utmost gratitude, good night, Canada, which is just lovely. Michael, if people like Aaron Propp and Larry Roy want to send in their original music and they don't have Michael Granberry to do it for them, how do they do it?
Chris
Send us your music by emailing it to jingles@tonykarnizershow.com and it feels like the summer season is just around the corner. TK Cushions and I'm really happy to share. You can pick out something nice for mom from Johnny O this year. Oh, Mother's Day's coming up.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, sure, I'll do that. But it'll be a size large man polisher. Hey, this fits me. Yeah. All right. So the music plays in our friend Andy Byer. The Andy Byer speed figures. The greatest racing rider of all time. And we're going to get a Kentucky Derby preview. I just wanted to start with what you thought. As someone who cares deeply about the horse racing business, what do you think about Bob Baffert finally being back and then having to scratch his horse Rodriguez, which a lot of people liked?
Andy Beyer
Well, there are two separate issues.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Andy Beyer
I thought the suspension of Baffert was just. Was really unfair and unwarranted. Yeah, he committed an infraction, but it was portrayed by Churchill Downs and by the media as if he was, as if Baffert was the face of everything evil and horse racing.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, that's true. They did it that way.
Andy Beyer
The penalty just didn't fit the crime. The medication that he had administered to his Derby winner, betamethasone, is relatively benign. It's something that veterinarians would routinely prescribe. And he was, you know, but you can't give it within a certain amount of time before the horse ran. And so he was, you know, he was over the line in that respect. But Churchill really had a vendetta against him and, you know, and banished him from the track for three years. I mean, this is his first appearance since, you know, you know, since then, you know, under the twin spires. And it was, as I say, it was just wrong since he, you know, since his misfortune. I mean, the, the racing industry created a supervisory group called Heiser Horse Racing Integrity and Safety alliance, which, you know, examined the, you know, all the medication infractions that were possible and prescribed, you know, and created a list of what an appropriate penalty would be for a positive drug test for betamethasone. The recommended penalty was a $500 fine.
Tony Kornheiser
Not three years out. Yeah, not three years out.
Andy Beyer
Todd Pletcher, the sainted Todd Pletcher had a positive test for this drug. I guess early in the year or late last year, you know, you couldn't find a paragraph about it in any newspaper. So this, you know, I just thought that he. I view him as a martyr. View Matt Baffert as a martyr. He didn't deserve this. In my book, he is close to being the greatest trainer of all time, certainly the greatest Kentucky Derby trainer of all time. And it was just a bump deal.
Tony Kornheiser
Did you like his horse, the one that scratched Rodriguez? Did you like it?
Andy Beyer
Yeah, this was, this is a funny thing that the Baffert, there's an ownership syndicate, you know, of like, you know, all kind of zillion, 10 zillionaires who jointly own horses in the race. And two of them are in this race. Rodriguez, the horse who was scratched, and Citizen Bull, who was, you know, a very formidable horse, was last year's two year old champion. And, you know, but they were both front running types and, you know, everybody looked at this and said, geez, what's going to happen? These two horses are going to come out of the gate and go head in head and compromise each other. When they announced the scratch of Rodriguez, you know, for an injury that, you know, was, you know, just sounded in their description as being, you know, you know, totally, you know, pretty superficial, I mean, my immediate reaction was this. This is just too convenient. Yeah, I don't, personally, I don't believe it. They just wanted Citizen Bull to be alone, you know, on the front end in this race and then you've got a fresh Rodriguez to run in the Preakness. So there was, if there was, if there was anything elicit here, it was a little conniving among the owners. But I mean, if I'd been one of the owners, I would have been tempted to do the same.
Tony Kornheiser
I have heard of both those horses. In talking with Ron Flatter and getting stuff from George Melay. I've heard of Journalism and Sovereignty. My friend Eddie likes that. Luxor Cafe, Admire Daytona, Sandman. Are any of those horses on your short list? Do you see this race as going to one of them?
Andy Beyer
My short list has one horse on it and that's journalism. I think he is the, you know, one of the maybe the solidest Kentucky Derby favorite we've seen in a number of years.
Tony Kornheiser
Really?
Andy Beyer
Oh, yeah. I mean, he, as you know, I'm a speed figure guy. When he, he, two races ago, he won stakes at Santa Anita with a figure of 108, which is better than any, much better than any horse in this field has ever recorded. Then he came back and won the big three year old race in California, the Santa Anita Derby. Speaker was 102, but he had, he had some, you know, he had some trouble in the early part of the race. I'd give him another three or four points, you know, just, you know, and you know, just because, you know, he did encounter some adversity. So these two races are just demonstrably better than anybody else has run. You know, he's, I mean, he's a versatile type. I mean, he finished strongly in both those California races, but he's also God enough speed to be within a length or two of, you know, really quick horses like his now departed stablemate Rodriguez. So he's, he's solid. He's, he's the one to beat.
Tony Kornheiser
Do I have to worry about weather? Do I have to worry about post position? Is he situated correctly?
Andy Beyer
He drew Pope. Post position eight, the middle of the field. That's five. Weather is another story. I mean, there's a chance of severe thunderstorms today and tomorrow. It could rain all day. And what that will do, don't ask me how that will affect the race. Neither I nor anybody else has any idea. But I mean, it does inject an element of significant uncertainty into the Derby. But I guess that's what horse racing is all about, right? Uncertainty.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Well, I'm gonna root for journalism. Cause it's disappearing. Heck yeah.
Nigel
Yeah, we need a win.
Tony Kornheiser
And I made, I made a living doing journalism. So you're solid on this yet. And even if it rains, would you go to the window or would you back away?
Andy Beyer
No, I got it bad. But I'm gonna play in exacta with a, with a horse named Burnham Square who I, you know, who has, you know, who has really been, has been steadily improving from one race to another all through his six race career. And, you know, he won the important Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland in Kentucky, you know, against what I thought was a good field. So that's my, you know, since journalism isn't going to be, you know, a price that, you know, will be life altering, I'm going to play an exact in this race.
Tony Kornheiser
That's wonderful. Thank you, Andy. We'll talk before the preakness okay, Tony.
Andy Beyer
Thanks.
Tony Kornheiser
Andy Beyer, he knows more than anybody. You know he invented. Yeah.
Nigel
The steep kids data analysis point.
Tony Kornheiser
Fabulous. He's fabulous. We will take a break. As you say. He bets.
Chris
What he says he's going to bet.
Tony Kornheiser
He does. He goes to the window. We're not trying to get you to bet it. And then he's going to hit a long shot. No, he goes. Yeah, he goes to the window. With American money. He does it. All right, we come back with email and jingle. I'm Tony Kornheiser. Right now the Home Depot has spring deals under $20. So what are you working on? If you're planning on cooking out this season, head to the Home Depot. You can fire up the grill with deals on charcoal. Right now, get two 16 pound bags of Kingsford charcoal for only $17.88. Tony Kornheiser
It's Pat Bass. We're very happy with that. Love that version. Beautiful country, old time country stuff. You want to do the Bethesda bagel yet? Chris gets a bagel today. Oh, he gets a bagel. He gets a bagel. He's always upset because he's not here. Monday, he doesn't get the bagel sandwich, we get a bagel. I thought it. No.
Brian Windhorst
Wow.
Nigel
Well, well, that's a disappointment. File that in the many disappointments of my life.
Chris
Bethesda bagels, never a disappointment. Just go to Bethesda Bagels.com for the location in the DC area nearest you. Then pop on in, my friend, and.
Tony Kornheiser
You will be thrilled. That should just about do it for us today. Before we get to the mailbag, let me just say. Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of mine. And I dare not drown my sorrows in the warm glow of your wine. You can't buy my love with money for I never was that kind. Silver threads and golden needles cannot mend this heart of. Of mine. If you've not heard Linda Ronstadt do this song, stop what you're doing, do it right now. Don't listen to Linda Ronstadt do this song. Thanks to our guest today, Andy Byer and Brian Windhorst. Thanks as well. To today's sponsors. Remember, you can listen to us on Apple podcasts Spotify and Odyssey. Get the show through Apple. Please leave us a Review from Matt in Thomaston, Connecticut. Do you know where that is?
Nigel
Yes, it's the nice part of Connecticut.
Tony Kornheiser
It's.
Nigel
It's. It's. I believe it's in the northwest corner, which is gorgeous. It's very rural, but beautiful.
Tony Kornheiser
Greetings, Dr. Porthouser. With Harvey retiring, Mr. Toney talked about why university presidents retire. The real reason is because the medical school cadavers got delivered to the alumni dinner. Someone dumped a whole truck of fizzies into the swim meet. Every Halloween the trees are filled with underwear and every spring the toilets explode. The real question is, now that he is leaving, are all the fraternities that are under double secret probation eligible to enter afloat in the Homecoming parade?
Chris
Isn't the motto of Binghamton knowledge is good.
Tony Kornheiser
Knowledge is good? Bill Matfeld Fort Mill, South Carolina I would love to have dinner with you the next time I'm in D.C. don't worry, I won't ask for money. The fact that I need a new air conditioner will never come up. However, we can talk about how great my neighbors will think the carrier brought to you by the Tony Kornheiser show plaque will look on the outdoor unit. Or would you prefer the Tony Kornheiser condenser unit? I'm open to suggestions from Orrin Hirsch in Chevy Chase, Maryland. As an Orioles fan who happened to be up in New York City for the day yesterday while the Orioles happened to have a game against the Yankees, I turned on WFAN to listen to friend of the show Dave Sims call the game. Cade Povich was pitching for Baltimore, and at some point Dave Sims says, I've been told he's not related to Morrow. I immediately say to the woman to whom I'm related by marriage, that was a Tony Kornheiser reference, since I was trying to merge onto the George Washington Bridge at the time. And I add, I have feelings about the George Washington Bridge similar to your feelings about the Bay Bridge, often requiring total silence from anyone else in the car while driving across it or through the adjacent interchanges. I didn't get to see her facial expression, but everyone can imagine as they would like. I then tried my best to explain all the references to her while simultaneously wondering if this was my personal David Aldrich moment. I'll hang up and listen to get the answer. Yeah, Love that Dave did that. Love that Dave did that. Dave Sims. That's really good, Carl and us, we go New York. Please find below a link to the Post Standard. That is a Syracuse.
Nigel
Yes, it is.
Tony Kornheiser
Newspaper article about the Golden Snowball Award for Upstate New York. Assuming we don't have a huge May snowstorm, which, by the way, happens.
Chris
Could happen.
Tony Kornheiser
It happens. It melts quickly, but it happens. Syracuse is this year's winner for the first time in seven years with 115 inches. Even though this is nearly double last year's snowfall, it is still considered below average. Rochester was second, Binghamton was third with 79.9 inches, Buffalo fourth and Albany fifth with a measly 43.9 inches. Wow. Binghamton had more snow than Buffalo. How about that? You know, you're not used to that. Josh Allen from Tony Be. Who? He's sharing oh, Boston Marathon pictures. His son ran. Yeah.
Chris
And look at his time.
Tony Kornheiser
His son Paul. 2:48. What two hours.
Nigel
Is he a professional runner?
Chris
It's astonishing.
Tony Kornheiser
Is that for the half 30 full 26.2. 1980. First place out of 28,000. Out of 28,000.
Nigel
Holy moly.
Tony Kornheiser
That is crazy.
Nigel
Anything sub three hours.
Tony Kornheiser
My son Paul is wicked fast. Said his own personal best time. Wow. Tom Dodd Raleigh, N.C. with apologies to Alan Arkin and his chicken tirade outro that you play every night. It's the bleeping bullpen. Holy God Almighty. Is it possible just once we could hold on to a lead without the bleep and bleep and bullpen? I'm just saying last night we are.
Nigel
On a. I mean, you've mentioned this, but Michael, Chuck and and you and I are on a text thread because we are the only weirdos who watch every game. And I feel like I could just cut and paste my comment every night, which is how is the bullpen? How can they be this bad?
Tony Kornheiser
And then they were good last night.
Chris
Bootsy has to pull up the covers during bedtime to hide from the glow of my phone as I'm watching Meltdown.
Tony Kornheiser
Daddy has to watch the game. Go get me some Sigs. Prior to the Pacers Bucks Game 5 on Monday night, teams held a 1,609 and 0 record in the playoffs when leading by at least seven points with 40 seconds left, they're now 1,609 and 1 Doc Rivers. He has all these terrible things. Such a wonderful Carla Corrado who we like a lot. Please tell Les CAC and not that Mike Todd that Africa Road is closed between Polaris and county line. Just great to have this. And Kevin Maroney, chuck and roxy, number 270 and it's just fine. Sand Finds Sands.
Chris
Oh, that's the title.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. That's really good. Yeah. Headline from Augusta. One more. Brian Brown from Hampton, Virginia. It's referring to an email from Barbara Nigel to Tony. Do you know a barber, Vinnie something or other? Tony. Oh, yeah. She lived across the hall from me in an apartment at 20 Conklin Avenue in Binghamton when I was a sophomore. She had a roommate named Figgy. 20 minutes earlier. Tony, I am unburdened by memory. Yeah, well, some things I do remember. If you're out on your bike tonight, everyone, as always, do wear white. Wanna talk real customers? I'm like the mayor of Duncan. I go from Marblehead to Revere Mobileh.
Aaron Propp
Courage, my love, it's all right. Take up your har bend play. Tonight a full moon rises up to holy wrath. You found the sound of heartbreak and you've known a lonely sake. Oh love, sing a new song tonight. The moonlight pearls your skin and lights your way. Heart is never hard Stameless So much more you have to follow. So leave behind your heart and earth. I pass through you and it's true that you and I have seen the rain and swallowed our fair share Bitter pills and pain and this may be just a summer's dream. But if it's all the same I'll stay long after the dream has faded away. And I know you do the same. Wedded all the violence of life. Fragile birth to wretched grave and screaming Babel towers made the joy and innocence we lose the precious line pulling me through? Instead I pass through life with you? Yeah, I pass through?
