Tony Kornheiser
Hey, it's Tony. On today's show, we will talk with Jason Locanfora about the big storylines for next week's draft. And we'll look at the play in games and the NBA playoffs with Tim Legler. But first, let's do some commerce. Let's shift to another topic that's always on my mind. The future of golf. Today's most impactful players aren't just on the pro circuit. They're everywhere. For starters, there's one, a 14 year old, one armed golfing prodigy Tommy Morrissey since the age of three. Yes, three. This kid could drive it down the fairway like a legendary. Then there's pro golfer Gabby Barker, who's inspiring more girls to get in the game. And Renee Fluker is giving kids in our community life lessons through golf lessons. Her midnight golf program has helped thousands of kids build brighter futures. Right now we're seeing the game grow in ways some never thought possible. I, on the other hand, always knew that golf had limitless potential to bring people together. Bank of America supports everyone determined to find out what's possible in golf and in life. Hi, I'm Kristen Bell. Carvana makes car buying easy. Isn't that right, hon? Dax. Dax, sorry. Did you know about this? 7 day money back guarantee. A week to evaluate seat comfiness. You say a week of terrain tests? Yeah, I can test the brake pad.
Dax Shepard
Resistance at variable speeds.
Tony Kornheiser
Make sure all the kids stuff fits nicely. Make sure our stuff fits nice. Oh the right.
Dax Shepard
Still need to buy the car.
Tony Kornheiser
Getting ahead of ourselves here. Buy your car with Carvana today. Previously on the Tony Kornheiser Show. Talking about the draft. Do you remember when you were drafted? Do you remember the process? Do you remember all of that? Was there a particular place you wanted to go? And was there a particular place or two where you said I don't want to go there? I remember that draft like the last time. You remember you had hair, Tony. Like we all remember those important times in our life. The Tony Cornheiser show is on now. Alrighty then. So we are, I don't know a term that I could use that anyone would understand other than split screen. Even though we're not on any particular screen other than News Channel 8. Sean is running the board today. Nigel and I are in Washington D.C. and Michael is in Delaware. So we have four people involved, and we need technological help. So we go to Sean. Because Nigel has no technological skills.
Nigel
Absolutely not.
Tony Kornheiser
I have no technological skills. And Michael may. But he's not here, so there's nothing he can do about it.
Dax Shepard
So you should have heard Nigel mess up the bagels. He brought them downstairs.
Nigel
Yes, I forgot.
Tony Kornheiser
What did you do?
Michael
Well, they.
Nigel
I forgot we were connected. So when you. When I come down, they can already listen in and everything. And I got downstairs and realized that I had not left the bagels upstairs.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, you brought them down.
Nigel
Yes. I need to go bring those back up.
Tony Kornheiser
We will talk about the bagels later in the show, as we always do.
Nigel
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Speaking of bagels, speaking of. Is our food things called Michael Comestibles. Right? Is that the correct word? Comestibles? Yeah. So I get a. I get from my daughter Elizabeth yesterday, I get a picture in a shop right. In the Atlantic City area where she goes. Shop. Right. They have my dad's chips.
Jason Lockenfora
Oh, wow.
Tony Kornheiser
That. That's great. At the expansionism of my dad's chips.
Nigel
It's well done.
Tony Kornheiser
So that's. I was very excited about that.
Dax Shepard
Fresh market as well.
Tony Kornheiser
Is fresh market in. In Delaware. Correct. They're doing great. The Dell family. Right. They're doing great. And we're happy to say that we love my dad's chips.
Nigel
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
So that's Right. That's really good. You have a Patrick Corbin story for me.
Nigel
Well, this is brought to my attention by one Michael Kornheiser. I guess Corbin, who was pitching last night. He's pitching for Texas now.
Tony Kornheiser
I'm glad he has a job. Yeah, I'm glad there's a team that wants somebody who is willing to go out there every five days.
Nigel
But he had some kind of a spider bite and wasn't even sure if he was gonna pitch. Something bit me, he said, but I still don't know why. Yeah, they were able to kind of work it out and just kind of maintain it throughout the day, but it's still pretty sore. It's just kind of something that's really strange. I was fortunate to get through yesterday. I've got some time to recover and be. To go, but I guess he ended up having a nice, you know, face. 16 a few batters through five innings was one of his better outings in a while.
Dax Shepard
Strikeouts through the first run through the order.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, that's great. So maybe did Texas win? Did he win or did he lose or what? What happened?
Nigel
It doesn't say in this copy whether they won the game. I Believe they did.
Tony Kornheiser
But you have no idea.
Nigel
But I have no actual idea.
Tony Kornheiser
No. You're just saying that. Yes, I put you on the spot. Then you would have to answer a question. So you said something that didn't realize.
Nigel
It'S going to be math at this press conference. Texas. Yes, they did. They beat the Angels 5 to 3.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Dax Shepard
The best part about it is he's staying at Scherzer's old house.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh. They were really. They were teammates. And the kids must be looking around.
Dax Shepard
Be like, this is what we could have had.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, yeah, right. Wait, Daddy, he's going to the hall of Fame. How come you're not going to the hall of Fame? Okay, so let me stay with baseball. I have really nothing to say about the Nats game yesterday. They gave up a home run, I think in the first or second inning and that was it. It was a one nothing game. That's highly unusual.
Dax Shepard
It's a win if there were no fights that were started.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, there's a. Yeah, no, I'm going to go back to that. No suspense. Well, yes. Davey Martinez was suspended for yesterday's game. Both Davey Martinez and Jorge Lopez were suspended for the incident on today's Friday, Wednesday night incident. Wednesday night or late afternoon, May, whenever it was in Pittsburgh. And both were suspended. Lopez suspended for three games and you know, accused of throwing deliberately at Andrew McCutcheon. And Davies suspended for one game. I don't know what his sin was. Probably arguing, screaming, whatever it was. Managers cannot appeal. So Davies served the suspension yesterday and was not managing the team that lost a one nothing game. This is a very. I will say they got swept by the Pirates. I think they go to Colorado. They in Colorado tonight, Michael. Colorado. Right.
Dax Shepard
I'll pull up the schedule.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. This is very disappointing. It's okay to lose the Skins. The Pirates aren't a good team. The Pirates are a second rung team just like the Nats. And to go Colorado. Right. And. And to lose them all. To lose them all tells you that the Nats aren't any good. It's so early in the season to have to face the fact that the Gnats aren't any good. What we know about the Nats is certain people on the Nats aren't any good. And don't, please, please don't be deluded by the fact that Sims and Ferrer had had good outings yesterday. Don't be deluded by that. Please don't, don't. Terrible. Okay, so certain people aren't very good. For example. And I'll get to the bullpen in a second. But there are some hitters that aren't any good. Luis Garcia, who I like at second base is batting 180. He's not a particularly good fielder. So you're carrying him because of his bat and he had, you know, I think he had a game winning RBI early in the year but he's batting.180. Josh Bell, in his second time around with the Nats is batting 133. He's in there. He was not. What?
Dax Shepard
It's a song reference TV show theme song.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, so he's batting.133. He wasn't, he wasn't in the lineup yesterday. Finally. Well, Davey wasn't the manager. I guess the other guy said why am I playing this guy? Why am I playing this guy? He can't hit. Yeah, what do we need this guy for? And he's always in the lineup because he's a switch hitter who can't hit from either side. He's batting.133. Nice guy. No good anymore. Dylan Cruz, who was the overall number two pick in the Major League baseball draft right behind his LSU college teammate, Paul Skeens. Paul Skeens debuted as rookie of the year last year and as a starting pitcher in the all star game. Paul Skeens is a beast.
Nigel
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Dylan Cruz is batting.140. He has no RBI. We're almost a month into the season. Yeah, he has no rbi. Why is he playing? You know and I'm sure the answer is well, you don't want to hurt his confidence. And my response would be what confidence could he possibly have at the moment he's batting.140, has no home runs and no RBI. And that's still not the worst part of the team. Like Riley Adams isn't batting anything, he batting zero. But K Bert Ruiz, right. Michael is batting so well it doesn't matter. Riley Adams is going to get.
Dax Shepard
But you focus on the Dylan Cruz and Skeens matchup, the way that this four game series should start and it gets national attention and you see what he puts up there. And no matter what the record is for Skeens, no matter how a season starts, you still know what he's capable of. And we have not yet really felt that for Dylan Cruz. And you look at where they are in the season and you had a very start opening but this is where you have to use these types of four game series to sort of get back. They clawed back to just a few under.500. Now it feels like they're going the other way.
Tony Kornheiser
It does. It does. And then there was this almost fight. So today is Friday, So the almost fight was Wednesday. It's a one nothing game in favor of Pittsburgh in the seventh inning. And the Nats bring in Jorge Lopez, who I believe should simply be dfa. I mean, don't even put him out there again. In any case. They put him out there, gives up a couple of singles, he gets a couple of outs. The Pittsburgh scores or runs to nothing. Then he hits Brian Reynolds. And coincidentally. Now, there are two things here that are very possibly coincidental. One is the night before, a Pittsburgh pitcher had hit Paul DeYoung in the face, breaking his nose. Yeah. So does that cause call for retaliation? Yes, it might. Yes, it might. From a reliever. Not necessarily in a one nothing game, but it might. And two batters in a row. Brian Reynolds, who was hit by Lopez and the net on the first pitch from Lopez. First pitch he had Brian Reynolds. On the third pitch to Andrew McCutcheon, he went high and tight and knocked McCutcheon down. Both those guys hit home runs off Jorge Lopez last year when he was pitching September, I think so. Pitching for Chicago. So does he remember that? Sure, of course he remembers.
Dax Shepard
Finished business.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. So now Pittsburgh, there's almost a fight and the umpires caucus and they throw out Lopez. Lopez says afterwards, it's my fault. I'm sorry. I'm having a lot of trouble with my delivery. You ought to deliver electricity, make a lot more money, deliver electricity to my house. You're not just having trouble with your delivery, you're having trouble pitching. He's pitched seven innings this year. Seven innings for the Washington Nationals. He has a 1047 ERA. It's not 147, it's 1047. Which means he gives up more than one earned run per inning. He's out there and maximize his time on the mound. Yeah. Great. Great. And in these seven innings, he has four walks and two hit batters like he's not. This is not major league quality. It's not. And everybody loves Mike Rizzo. Me, too. He's had a lot of time to fix the bullpen. The bullpen is never fixed. I think somebody on the Nats ought to realize Mike Rizzo probably can't fix this bullpen and probably bring in somebody else who's got eyes for bullpen stuff, you know, because Davey just trots out the guys that he's given. What's he supposed to do? I know, but they. I. It's disappoint. This was Particularly disappointing was it not Michael Again, this is, this is the.
Dax Shepard
Continuation of where you are in a real rebuild and you start after the. You thought after the first couple weeks, okay, I see the promise and it's disheartening to see the lack of production by Dylan Cruz and the fact that you're trying to sit here. We've seen this with can't miss prospects at third base. You, you don't want to see Dylan Cruz enter that same category. I feel less worried about the bullpen just because Rizzo, when the team is competitive, goes out and fixes the bullpen, makes it a lot stronger with a couple of different options at the trade.
Tony Kornheiser
Starters in there in the playoffs, that.
Dax Shepard
That was for one World Series run. But for previous bullpens, I mean that you pick up a couple of 8th inning and 9th inning guys. So I'm less worried about that because that just sort of happens to be who you have at the time. And so much of that is team mentality and what the team vibe feels like. But man, it's. That does feel like a very hollow, hollow first month of the season with.
Tony Kornheiser
That they wasted really good starting pitching. Look, look, last night or yesterday, starting pitcher gives up one run. That's all day before starting pitcher gives up one run. That's what I'd like to see some.
Dax Shepard
Of these more closely. But you know, there's a bit of a mass an issue.
Tony Kornheiser
Wait, it's. You don't have it yet?
Dax Shepard
No, the Madison is back, but that was after the fourth game ended. Tony.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, I'm sorry. I called to get it done.
Dax Shepard
I just want to make sure you have the gnats when you come back out.
Tony Kornheiser
It's costing 5 extra dollars a month.
Nigel
It's worth it.
Tony Kornheiser
We have to trim the $5 off. Something for the children.
Nigel
Gotta make some cuts somewhere.
Tony Kornheiser
Where did you eat last night? Did you have a nice dinner? Was nice.
Dax Shepard
We actually. We met up with friends in the afternoon, had a. Had some taco tacos for the kids. Then Liz and I picked up Confucius, our favorite Chinese restaurant.
Tony Kornheiser
It's really good. All right. So good that this is what I wanted. I don't really have anything else to say because we're going to have Tim Legler, so he'll talk about the basketball that is ongoing tonight. And we're going to have Jason Lock and for. So he can talk about Aaron Rodgers, his favorite whipping boy, Aaron Rodgers. We can talk about that and things having to do with the draft. So that's today's show.
Dax Shepard
I'm just glad you didn't bring up the cushions that we threw out.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, if you're going to bring them up, I'll tell people about these. And these are beautiful, beautiful indoor outdoor cushions. Eight of them. And the decision was made to get rid of three of the chairs. I tried to lobby for all the chairs staying, but I got three on the outside and two on the inside. And they are indoor outdoor chairs with indoor outdoor cushions. Beautiful green cushions. Really, really nice. And I was a little late in texting my son and his bride. You're gonna save all the cushions, aren't you? Too late. We threw them out. Not all of them.
Dax Shepard
We saved five big chairs. These are chairs that had been masquerading as dining room chairs for the last 20 years.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, they're uncomfortable, but if you put. These cushions are so comfortable that if you put two cushions down, it's a lovely chair. And now I can't do that because two cushions.
Dax Shepard
The hammer needs to reach the table.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. The extra three that I had, you know, I could have brought here or kept out there. I could have put in frames. They're really beautiful. But they're gone now. So I hope someone who goes through the garbage is happy. Pick them out.
Nigel
Some nice cushions.
Tony Kornheiser
Some very lovely furniture was tossed out. But. But, you know, I'm not. I'm not upset about any of the other things. Although there was a table that I thought was nice, but nobody had any use for it, so not even me. You know, what was I going to do? Bring up his walk home? Was what?
Dax Shepard
Cracked table.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, it was cracked.
Dax Shepard
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, maybe that was the charm. Maybe I got it in the thrift shop 30 years ago. I don't remember. I don't remember. I don't remember anything about anything I've ever bought other than, well, yeah, we've had it for a while.
Nigel
The orange pants. You remember.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, I know that. I know. I don't even know where they are, though. I don't know where the orange pants are. That's the other problem, what house they're in. Anyway. All right, we're done. Jason. That's right, Jason. Lucken for it. When we return. I'm Tony Kornheiser. This is the Tony Kornheiser show. This show is sponsored by Liquid iv. He comes up with these things, you know, immediately every sport. He's Dan Byrne. He's simply brilliant.
Nigel
We love him.
Tony Kornheiser
He plays in Jason Lock and for and I have to do this read, we're joined by Odyssey NFL Insider, Jason Lock and for our host of the Odyssey original podcast in the huddle covering the entire NFL. So we're going to talk about this. I mean the draft starts next Thursday. It's Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. We are off on pti. Makes me very happy. Let somebody else, you know, just carry this thing. Yeah, so we're happy about that. What would you say, since you're paid to know these things, what would you say is draft story number one? What's the thing that intrigues you most about the draft?
Jason Lockenfora
Geez, I mean, honestly, I do think it's sort of this whole quarterback deal. We're at a point pretty, pretty, you know, pretty far advanced in the off season now and there's still so many teams that they're, they're just. Whether we want to talk about quarterback of the present, quarterback of the future, do they have a guy on their roster who you really think you can win when it matters? You know, one off games against the best of the best. There's just to me a lot of teams that are lacking more than normal and how they go about doing what they do in this first round. But also beyond that, still what happens with a Kirk Cousins still, I guess what happens with an Aaron Rodgers, there seems to be a lot more like supply and demand, not matching, not, not lining up. And then again, this is, this is a quarterback draft where there aren't some of these sort of consensus, universal opinions about even sort of the order they should go or where they should go or who really is worthy of what. So I could tell you it's a generational D tackle draft. You know, we can talk about a lot of stuff I guess 50,000ft below, you know, sea level. But like what? Like how many of these teams are going to be sitting there on, on that Monday morning and the real sort of power brokers within their franchises are going to be, you know, at least privately sort of unsettled about, yeah, well, we still don't have a guy playing the most important position who could actually help us win football games.
Tony Kornheiser
I've never heard anybody from Tennessee, maybe you haven't paid that much attention, say we're going to take Cam Ward. Everyone assumes they are going to take Cam Ward. Is that your understanding as well?
Jason Lockenfora
Yeah, they're taking Cam Ward.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, so they have given up. They've given up on the mayonnaise man. They've given up on him.
Jason Lockenfora
Yeah. Yeah. That was fun while it lasted. The real problem there is to let the mayonnaise man feel like he was, you know, fully empowered. They kicked Malik Willis out of their building. Who. Boy, I bet you if you gave them some truth serum and said, who would you rather have as you starting quarterback right now? What do you think of what Green Bay did with Malik Willis? I think there's a lot of mayonnaise on a lot of people's faces and I guess hands and whatever else. There's not a pretty picture there.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, but you've got a quarterback.
Jason Lockenfora
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
They're going to take.
Jason Lockenfora
Doesn't matter what anybody says this time of year, but that's what they're going to do.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. That leaves the most interesting person in the draft at Travis Hunter. Yes. Because now he, he has absolutely no leverage. He said, if you're not going to let me play both ways, I'm not going to play football. What are you going to do? You're going to open up a body shop? What are you going to do? So you're going to play football. And that's just, you know, that's his appeal to everyone. Please understand, I really want to play both ways. Where does he go and will he indeed play both ways? I mean, how many snaps can you take in the NFL against people who really are bigger, stronger and faster than you've ever played against?
Jason Lockenfora
Well, I wouldn't be, you know, I wouldn't be in a rush to slam that door shot. Especially when the kids, you know, 21 years old and, you know, as fresh as he will ever be, he's going to go to the Browns, he's going to be the second pick in this draft and okay, I think he will be a huge cog for them on offense and I think they'd be pretty short sighted and naive and silly not to have him involved in their defense. To your point, is it every single snap, is it every single first down, every single second down, every single third down, you know, whatever. You may want to have a plan for that. Like you may want to figure out certain downs and distances or things within your scheme where you think he, he stands out the most, but like, he has the potential to be somebody's best wide receiver and best corner. I don't know why you wouldn't sort of embrace that at, at least to, you know, a, A strong degree. I, I don't know why you would make that, you know, pretend that that's a bad thing or a problem or negative until, you know, or unless it actually becomes one. He's put himself in a position that, especially on their depth chart, they don't have a whole lot other dudes. They don't be like, yeah, let's get X, Y and Z in there instead of Hunter. Make sure Hunter's getting enough Gatorade, keep him on the bench, you know, and let's try these other MOOCs, see if we can win a game that way. Like I. Boy, good luck with that.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, so that brings us to three. And that brings us to the Giants. And my particular theory is that the Giants GM and the Giants coach are going to be fired if they have another bad year because they won three games last year. And yes, they need a quarterback, but I don't know that you want to hand that off to a rookie because if the rookie wins three games, you're in the, you're, you know, somewhere else when he wins seven games because you're going to be fired. So who makes the pick on that team and what do they do?
Jason Lockenfora
Well, I mean, look, the owner's heavily involved, if you'd be a fool not to think so. He, in situations like this, they always are. And this guy is involved in everything and really fancies himself a football man. And if you don't believe me and you watched even a little that Hard Knocks debacle you saw for yourself. So I don't think he believes that Shador Sanders is the guy for him. I just, I don't think that's sort of where he is. I think just how the personality and how bold and brash and like, I, I don't know. I don't think it fits what John Mara thinks the Giants culture is. I could be totally wrong. That's just my hunch and my read. And I think they got the two quarterbacks in line before the, you know, well, before the draft that they did so that they could make the case that we don't have to do anything at that position. And I think they'll take a quarterback some at some point on Friday. I don't think they're going to take one at third overall and risk, you know, they're very risk averse. I don't think that they want to overdraft someone. They, they, I, you know, they kind of did that with Daniel Jones. I think he's over that. And you know, you've got Elo Eli's nephew maybe coming out next year and if not next year, you know, there's always the year after that. I think that's more their speed. So, yeah, I think they're taking Abdul Carter and I think they're going to look that look at right in their division of what the Eagles did and how the Eagles turned it around. And yet he did a lot of great things on offense. But I mean, they beat Patrick Mahomes because of their defense, like. And look, they did it. The Giants know what it took to beat Tom Brady at his best because they did it and they did it with, you know, a seven deep defensive line where at any given moment there, whatever four of those seven they had on the field were probably ripping the face off your five offensive linemen. So I think they lean into that. I think it's Abu Garner.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. The running back from Boise State, Travis Genti, had a lovely article in the, in the Players Tribune touting himself. He's five eight and a half. That's really short. On the other hand, Barry Sanders was listed at 58 and Emmett Smith was listed as 5 9. So they're two of the greatest running backs ever. How good is Genti? How far does he last in the draft?
Jason Lockenfora
Tone can't measure guy's heart.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, I love it. I love that.
Jason Lockenfora
I have a metric for that. It's hard to get in there with, you know, a roller and really measure that. I, I think he's going to go pretty high. I think he comes into play with Jacksonville at 5, he's at least a part of that discussion. And you know, I, I think if he's still there when the Bears pick at 10, then I kind of feel like that might be his range.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, Wilbur hopes that.
Jason Lockenfora
Will that end up being a little rich? I think it might. I've talked to some evaluators who like the kid, but they don't love him. They don't, they don't think he's Barry Sanders. You know, they don't, they don't think he's that kind of a, of a difference maker. They think people are getting a little caught up in, you know, what running backs did for certain teams. When those running backs went to really good teams that were loaded at every position. Most importantly, like they were loaded at quarterback, which helps the running back substantially and alters greatly the way teams defend you. But this isn't a great skill position player draft and he and a couple of tight ends do stand out. And so, yeah, you know, if Jacksonville took him fifth overall, I wouldn't be surprised. In fact, I kind of. I could see that.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, here is a non subtle question. Will the Ravens draft a kicker?
Jason Lockenfora
Well, they'll come away with a kicker. It could be an undrafted free agent. You know, it might be something that occurs, you know, 12 to 24 hours after the draft concludes, but they will address that position. Now, will they have addressed it in a manner in which they feel comfortable enough to then stop hiding behind this, you know, sham NFL investigation and just say this guy's not allowed in a building anymore? That guy being Justin Tucker? I mean, they may, but they, they could have done that at any point to now.
Tony Kornheiser
They could have.
Jason Lockenfora
You know, they've got OTA starting, they've got media back in their building, and there's nothing under the collective bargaining agreement they could do to keep Justin Tucker from going to work. Now, have they. Have they, you know, told him, hey, we need you to stay away? I mean, I mean, maybe, but, you know, again, if that's what they're doing, it's just further enabling of a guy who I think common sense and a few phone calls and a little bit of reading comprehension would tell you, really doesn't. You know, you really wouldn't. I wouldn't think you'd want to be associated with that person anymore, but that they, you know, they have, if anything, sort of embraced the idea that he may still have some future with him and. Oh, we'll just have to see what the league office says.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I don't think he has a future there, but that's just me last.
Jason Lockenfora
You know, I mean, I also wouldn't have thought in January that we would still be having these discussions a week before the draft.
Tony Kornheiser
No, I, I agree with that, but the league is sitting on its hands and not doing anything. Aaron Rodgers, who I know you like personally. Yeah.
Jason Lockenfora
Real blue guy. So. Team guy.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Lockenfora
I mean, how big is his heart? His heart is bigger than New York.
Nigel
City spell team without me.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you think you. Do you think he plays next year?
Jason Lockenfora
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Okay. Yeah.
Jason Lockenfora
Yeah. I don't buy the retirement. Yeah. I think he wants to play football. I think he wants to go out something better than that. I think he really now is motivated, you know, as motivated as he was to show Mark Murphy and those, you know, the guys who he would have said are dopes in Green Bay, he's even more motivated now to show Aaron Glenn, who's this guy's never coached in the league before. He's telling me I can't play for him. Like, who does he think he is? I don't know. He's a coach of NFL team. He's the kind of guy who's. That's actually his job, Aaron. It's his job to tell you you're not good enough for my team anymore. They wasted a lot of money and time on you. Get the stepping. That's how it works the real world.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Plug your radio show for us. Makes me so happy when you kill Aaron Rodgers.
Jason Lockenfora
Yeah, well, you get, you know, hey, play the hits right? That's what they said.
Tony Kornheiser
So.
Jason Lockenfora
But, but will somebody be stupid enough to give him $20 million to play for them next year? I. I think, okay. I think probably.
Tony Kornheiser
Plug your radio show.

This is a song called Strangers by Katie demartini, who writes thank you so much. I love being featured on your show. My entire family tuned in. I'd love if you played Strangers. Thank you for supporting smaller artists. She also writes, I am performing at the Bitter End, a very famous club in New York City on June 8, which I'm very excited about. Also doing a very mini tour in Nashville this summer. Planning on dropping an EP mini album this upcoming fall as well. I'll keep in touch. Katie demartini, this is lovely.
Nigel
That's lovely.
Tony Kornheiser
Strangers. Good for her. She plays in Tim Legler who's out doing the play in for espn. And so I wanted, I'm, I don't know how you feel about this. I like the play in format. It's hard for me to defend 20 of 30 teams being in a playoff of any kind, 2/3 of the teams, it's hard for me to defend that. But I concede, Tim, that I like the play in format. And I wonder if you like the play in format.
Michael
I love it. And when I first heard the idea, I was skeptical about what the mechanism would be. I didn't know exactly what they had in mind. I actually think they came up with the perfect mechanism. So basically what used to be, you know, 7 and 8 would get in automatically. Now at least you've got that advantage of you only have to win one game and you've got two chances to do it right. So I think they got that right. And 910 normally would have been on the outside looking in. Well, you got to go in two games on the road. If you can do that, then, well, 910 would host. But then, you know, that second game would definitely be on the road. Win to get in. I think it's great. And the reason I like it, Tony, more than anything, it gives more fan bases more reason to stay in it all year. You know, if your team, if your team is four or five games under.500, you know, mid season, you think, all right, you know what? I'm going to tune out now and get on to other things. You're still in it. So I hear what you're saying, like sub 500 teams, you're like, do they really deserve to be in this mix right now? And they're not going to make a run through the conference and like get to the finals or anything like that. But I just like rewarding fan bases that dedicate a lot of time, emotion, money to kind of stay with their team that they love. And it gives you a reason to stay in it till the end and it gives you hope. And it's the only thing we have that's kind of NCAA tournament like right. With these games that mean so much as a one off. Because once you get to the playoffs, best of seven, the better team will usually win.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. You were a player. I'm going to assume that because you were a player. Anytime they said to you, hey, we can get a game, you'd be happy. Right? Because you want to play basketball.
Michael
Of course. Yes, absolutely. I was the kid that cried his eyes out if my little league game got rained out. Yes, I was that guy. Anything, anything to compete. I just love competition. So. Yeah, definitely.
Tony Kornheiser
So this, this is my problem with the play in games. So far we've had four play in games and three of them have been routes. They've been routes. And I'm. I'm saying up front, I like the play in format, but I think it becomes a tough sell when you have a game like the Miami Chicago game. I stopped at halftime. Why am I watching this? There's no game there. What do you think?
Michael
Yeah, I agree with you. And I was, I was absolutely inexcusable for Chicago to put up that kind of an effort in the first half of that. And it's one thing if a team comes out and they just, you know, they, they, you're ready to play, but they just play out of their mind. I don't think Chicago was ready to play the game. And I just to me mind boggling. The game that I called the other night was a little bit different.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, Dallas, that was Dallas, Sacramento. Yeah.
Michael
And the. And Sacramento was ready to play. And that building was electric, as it usually is in Sacramento and Dallas. Their defense in the second quarter, which is really have been the big selling point with the Anthony Davis acquisition, was what it can do for them defensively and that's why they moved on from Luca and all that. Their defense in the second quarter was incredible and it completely demoralized Sacramento and took him out of the Game and Sacramento was the seventh best offensive team in the NBA and they had 10 turnovers in the second quarter. They failed to convert probably eight to 10 times at the rim because of all of that size on the floor. So that was a little bit different than the Bulls game because I just felt like. I felt like Chicago didn't even show up to play.
Tony Kornheiser
Like, yeah, I heard.
Michael
And I just didn't understand what was going on with them at all. But Dallas, I'm going to give them more of the credit in that game. I felt like they took the spirit of the Kings who were ready to go at the beginning because it was a very good first quarter. And then Dallas has ended it in the second.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, the Chicago thing, at some point, when Tyler Herro drives the lane seven times in the first half and no one gets in his way, then you say, they don't care. Chicago doesn't care. Wilbon was infuriated by this, wants to fire everybody, which I understand if you're a fan. So now we have two more games. We have Miami at Atlanta and we have Dallas at Memphis. What are your thoughts on. On those games? And please include what in God's name Trey Young was doing the other night in the game that they played and lost.
Michael
Yeah, here's what was interesting about that game. Now, look, I would never imply that a team intentionally lost a game, but think about the scenario for Atlanta in that game.
Tony Kornheiser
All right?
Michael
So they go in there, and if you lose, you still get to go host another game. And. Okay. And if you're able to win that game, you get to avoid the Celtics.
Tony Kornheiser
So, you know, you get Cleveland, you get.
Michael
Right.
Tony Kornheiser
No, you don't get.
Michael
All of those teams at the bottom would rather play Cleveland than Boston. I don't think you're beating Cleveland either, but you certainly would rather play them. And so when I was watching that game, I was thinking to myself, you know, Atlanta, it's. It's not as if during the game they felt this overwhelming sense of desperation, like, our season's going to end and what are we going to do? No, it's like, okay, we got another chance at home and we're going to get to play the Cavaliers if we're able to win that game.
Tony Kornheiser
Right, right.
Michael
Different scenario than the other game, which was Golden State, Memphis, which was both teams killing themselves to win the game, because then you get to play Houston and you don't have to play Oklahoma City. So. So that component of it where that team in that 7, 8 game has another opportunity and it could Be more beneficial to you to lose as long as you win the next game. It's kind of how I felt about Atlanta the other night because they, that was another situation where they just got it taken to them and it was kind of inexcusable. So now you get Miami, who played great against an Atlanta team that played awful and Atlanta's at home. I really think, Tony, it'd be impossible for me to predict who's going to win the game. I was very impressed with the Heat the other night and it kind of makes me think like when I really like Eric Spoelstra a lot and in a situation for one game, maybe I kind of lean on Eric Spoelstra and some guys that have been through some, some playoff series that mattered, maybe I lean there and Miami wins another road game and gets in.
Tony Kornheiser
I look, I look at the Dallas Memphis game in the same way. Jason Kidd is a coach of long standing in the NBA. He knows his players. Memphis has a guy who's now coached 10 games and lost six of them in the NBA. He was an assistant. I'm not disparaging him, but he's not Jason Kidd. Plus John Morant, their best player, is a game time decision. So I'm not going to be surprised if Dallas wins that game, are you?
Michael
No, not at all. And it's, it's like impossible for me to even wrap my head around the fact that two teams that had very good regular seasons for the most part, overcame injuries, everything else, with a lot of playoff experience, collectively fired their coaches right before the playoffs. And Memphis is one of those teams and it actually I thought showed itself the other night against Golden State what they were doing offensively to continue to feed Zach Eddy the ball in the fourth quarter when he was failing to convert everything he caught. I like Zach Eady and in a great year and he's probably going to make first team all rookie and he's going to have a very good career. In that game against Golden State they just continue to go to this well that they were getting no return on and I think if Taylor Jenkins is there, they probably don't do that. And then of course they have a five second violation, a five second violation with the game on the line and an opportunity to tie it with that possession and you don't get the ball in. And the design of a play was just awful. And I'm thinking to myself, man, you know, maybe if Taylor Jenkins is there, they get the ball in. So I hear what you're saying and look, it comes down to this, can Dallas play as effectively defensively against Memphis, which is going to push the pace to an extent that Sacramento is incapable of. And Dallas playing two bigs all the time, that's going to be the biggest challenge in the game. Like defensively, can you deal with the push up the floor that Memphis is going to try to hit you with? And if they can, then Dallas is going to have a great chance to win the game.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. And then people are going to try to revisit the Luka Doncic trade and say maybe, maybe Nico Harrison knew what he was doing. My position is sort of in stone on this that you can't make that trade, that you can't trade young for old and you can't trade great for very, very good and always hurt. But you may have a different position than mine.
Michael
My position is exactly like yours. And in fact I'm pretty confident I would be making that same exact statement on my deathbed. That might be the last word that I utter to the world before I go is there's no way you can justify that trade because, and I don't care by the way, it doesn't even matter to me obviously. I don't think Dallas gonna win a championship or anything like that this year. They don't have Kyrie Irving, we're going to have to see. They're talking about January, February for him next year at Torn acl. All right, so. So let's just say you're going to have to wait a little bit to really judge the Mavericks team based on Kyrie Irving's return. But here's the thing. Let's just assume Kyrie Irving didn't get hurt. I wouldn't care, Tony, if Dallas made it to the finals this year and the Lakers didn't. I wouldn't care if Dallas won a title this year and the Lakers didn't.
Tony Kornheiser
I.
Michael
You still can't justify it to me because one, you might have been able to do that with Luka Doncic. Two, and also you just gave the biggest gut punch to a franchise's fan base that you possibly can in this Sport for a 25 year old superstar. That's five times first team, all NBA who's already been to an NBA finals. And I understand the warts about Luka Doncic. I do. I do understand the fact he doesn't defend very well. I do understand the fact they wish he was a little bit more dedicated in the off season to coming in in shape and all those things. A better leader in a lot of ways. Stop Whining all the time about the officials. I get all of that, but here's what I do know. When you turn the lights up really bright and the heat gets turned up, Luka Doncic delivers. He's. He is even better in the postseason than he is in the regular season. The guy can win you games practically single handedly under the most intense pressure that these guys face, which is in the postseason. I've seen it. So to me, there's no way you could justify that trade to me. Regardless of what happens with Dallas, this trade is all about what happens with Luka Doncic going forward in his career.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Michael
And look. No, look. If he goes, if he goes six, eight years, plays as a Laker, LeBron's retired. It's all about Luca. They build around him and he still can't win, I guess. Yes. Sometime down the road, Nico Harrison is going to have a big smile on his face. I still don't think when you add it all up, what he represented, that you can make that move. And that's why it's not done in this league. And just look at the history of the league. You just don't trade guys that age that are that good now.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, we're in lockstep on this. Thank you, Tim. We hope to be have you on PTI soon, I hope. I always like that. I always like that.
Michael
For sure. Absolutely. Anytime you need me.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. Thank you, Tim. Tim Legler, boys and girls. Fabulous.

I got big news, dad.
Tony Kornheiser
What do you got?
Dax Shepard
We have a new Johnny O Code. I think I can get this one approved, but it'll be TK cushions. That is plural. But in preparation of graduation season, we got Mother's Day coming up. We got some, you know, looking forward, we got Father's Day. So they have some great spring offerings. But TK cushions. I'll make sure that that gets approved today or over the weekend.
Tony Kornheiser
Would you do me a favor? Would you take a picture of those beautiful cushions, just one of those beautiful cushions, and put it. Do we have a website?
Dax Shepard
We. What I would say is just Google Sunbrella cushions and it'll be the striped Sunbrella cushion. It'll be the first thing that pops up.
Tony Kornheiser
The green one. The green one. Stripes. It's really beautiful. It's really beautiful cushions. Nobody would throw them out. We have a letter here. It says, from Steve in Florida. With all due respect to our man Neil from Rockville, it was not hyperbolic to say completing the Grand Slam in men's golf is the single most difficult achievement in sports. Or as he put it, feet feat, which is synonymous with achievement. Totally agree with Neil from Rockville and Nats legend Jason Worth. Yet trying to hit a round ball moving 90 plus miles an hour with a round bat is the single most difficult thing to do in all of sports. The single most difficult achievement or feat in sports, however, is completing the career Grand Slam in men's golf. Love, Neil, Love sports Hate Duke. Go Caps. Steve in Florida. Josh Bartlett in Fulton, New York. Which he claims is in central New York. I'd like to say congratulations to the Binghamton debating team on the national championship. Just curious what the debate was about. Could it have been what Binghamton's location within New York State is? Is it upstate, downstate, perhaps Central New York? What was the conclusion? Jeff Barger, Hillsboro, N.C. now that the Binghamton debate team has won the national championship, how many debaters are hitting the transfer portal? Are SEC debate teams offering more nil money? Your alma mater, unlike AT&T, will gladly accept your check to keep the wolves at bay. I hadn't thought about that, but maybe yes. Why can't you get nil money and bring your debating skills somewhere else? Sure. To a team not as good as Binghamton, which is every other team in the country. I'm told we beat Kansas in the final.
Nigel
Yes, that's right. Jayhawks.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Bill Matfield bit Matt FELD I'm sorry, Fort Mill, S.C. who has emailed us before Michael's comments about no geese being harmed while you were playing golf reminded me of a story. I'm sure there are lots of stories about golf shots going awry. This one stands out to me. 20 years ago I was living and working in Fort Lauderdale. My company had a Wednesday evening golf league at the Palm Air Country Club near our office. Gonzalo Lebatard, Dan's father, used to play in that league. I was a part of a regular foursome with a wide range of golf skills. One lady was fantastic. She would hit in the 80s routinely from the white tees. Another was a guy who hit in the mid-90s. There was me was sitting around 100 and another lady who'd have quite a few of what we called triple bogey max. We enjoyed each other's company, laughed at and with each other. And I don't ever recall being slowed down because of the chasm that exists between our best and worst players. We could sneak in 18 at the peak of summer. One afternoon as we were approaching one of the greens, a triple bogey lady lined up her shot from around 40 or 50 yards. There was a line of Muscovy ducks crossing the fairway in front of the green. And you see where this story is going. Just hit the ball, you're not going to hit the ducks, we told her. We honestly didn't think she would reach the green. Most likely she's going to worm burn it. And because it had just rained an hour or so earlier, the Wet grass would stop it. She tops the ball, which sends it one foot off the ground at light speed right into the backside of one of the ducks. The ball bounces straight into the air, lands softly on the green. As I recall, she bogeyed the hole, which is really good for her, and the duck walked off with a limp. That's great. Everybody's got stories like that. Everybody's got that. Sue Meyer, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, home of the players of TPC Swordgrass On Wednesday show you confirmed that no geese were harmed during your rainy day round because the weather was not conducive to geese. That begs the question, where do these geese go on inclement days? To the men's grill for a quick card game until Doppler Raider says it's safe to go back out. That's funny. I like that. Bobby Godfrey about Ken Griffey Jr. I'm so glad you discovered Ken Griffey Jr. Second career as a sports photographer. Did you know he's not the only one to find this second career? Randy Johnson is also quite an accomplished sports photographer. Please see the attached images as well as the big unit's logo for his photography harkening to the time he hit a bird with a spring training pitch. Yeah, the logo's a dead bird. That's a dirt bird is on its back and it says Randy Johnson, photographer. Randy John's a terrible person. Yeah. Griffey's not.
Nigel
No, we loved. We love Junior.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Dax Shepard
And Griffey started doing this at his kids sporting events, right?
Nigel
Oh, is that. Is that right?
Tony Kornheiser
Anything about the history?
Nigel
But they were both teammates. Is this a Mariners?
Tony Kornheiser
They were. They were in Seattle. Teammates from Bill finoodle in Auburn, New York. That's upstate. During Wednesday's mailbag, you discussed Ken Griffey Jr. As a credentialed photographer at the Masters and compared it with Burt Lancaster in a similar role at the 1971 Madison Square Garden Ollie Frazier fight. Point of clarification, Brit Lancaster was actually one of the broadcasters of the fight. Seriously. As for the Life magazine celebrity photographer, it was none other than the chairman of the board himself, Francis Albert Sinatra. As they would say in the early 70s. It was a scene, baby. One last remembrance. As you may recall, the fight was on closed circuit tv shown in theaters, channeling my inner Wilbon kids. It was not pay per view on tv, no streaming. My father, little brother and I, all of 10 years old listened to the fight on the radio, in the kitchen. Even that was not broadcast live because of the closed circuit TV rights. There was a recap after each round. Simpler Times From Ricky Herb in Barnegat, New Jersey. Here's a story of a merge of your two favorite things, Cruises and Cell Phone Charges I worked for Sprint years ago. I had a man walk in completely flabbergasted by his cell phone bill. I took a look and for one month he was charged the $7,000. $7,000 big number. Long story short, back then you can use a cell phone on a cruise, but we would be charged by the cruise line for every minute you were connected to the service. His kid decided he needed his phone on even though he never used it. Sprint surprisingly cut the bill in half. Worst part? One year later the same man walked in with an eleven thousand dollar bill and he swore no one used their phones on this cruise. His kid ended up having to cop to the fact that he watched him enter his safe code and took his phone out and called his girlfriend at home a few times. Sprint did not help this time, much to the sun chagrin. Whoa. That's 11,007 and 11. That's down in the boys gym. Wow. Stephen McCarthy in Washington, DC. Wait a second. T boy is a real person and has a slaughterhouse at grocery store. I just assumed T boy is what Louisianans called Santa Claus because he's always gifting outrageous lines to carry. Marville. Wow. Nice. Apparently a real person. Sean Griffin SG he writes no relation to DG in Leesburg, Virginia. My birthday falls in between Nigel and Michael on the 10th of April. I share this birthday with 10 Griffey Senior and John Madden from the World of Sports. As an English major, journalist and Doctor of Humane Letters, you will appreciate that I also share this day with Joseph Pulitzer. And as a Beatles fan, you'll be happy that I share it with Vladimir Lenin. If I'm not mistaken, he was the walrus. In case you're interested, the two loudest noises that can be heard in the background background of the pod are Jesse's chew toys and the random thuds as Wilbond drops names. It's funny. Rich Cinque Grana Cinque grana in Arlington, Virginia just listening to the April 14th podcast where tone well that's Michael's birthday where Tony was telling Wilbon about wanting to throw plates at his tv. Why was I imagining Tony looking a lot like Hyman Roth sitting in a Miami bungalow with a food tray in front of him waiting for his tuna salad sandwich? Mark Muldoon, Kissimmee, Florida. You read my email. You called it brilliant twice. It almost brought a tear to my eye. Nicest thing anyone has ever said about me. It replaces my father saying he can't believe I've stayed out of jail all my life. So the bar was low, but still. Tell Greg Garcia's Uncle Jimmy, a pal from St. Charles elementary and O'Connell High School, to eat it. From Jeff in Salinas, California, the best Scotch accompaniment is definitely Fig Newton's. I learned that tip from colonel Sherman Potter. As I learned in that episode of mash. He liked to dunk them in the scotch and then take a bite. Please tell Lincoln Alexander and Henry Alexander Deed. I didn't know that.
Nigel
I'd forgotten that.
Tony Kornheiser
That's interesting. John Buchanan Annapolis, MD on behalf of Kent Island Cornhole, I'd like to formally invite you, Michael, Nigel, and any Littles to join our upcoming Spring League at the Stevensville elks Lodge beginning May 1st at 6pm we'll have eight weeks of play with a double elimination final in week nine, but only need to play a minimum of five weeks to qualify for the finals. Nigel
We'd love to do that, but we're actually getting involved in a pickleball league, I think.
Tony Kornheiser
Pickleball? Oh my. Brian Vento in Rochester Hills, Michigan My son is taking his 8th grade trip to DC at the end of April. April. And the short of it is he's not that excited to be going. I was wondering if Nigel could break him out to see the real DC Sites. Why go to the Capitol Lincoln Memorial when you can go the Refugee, Safeway, Calvert, Woodley and Bethesda Bagels. Let me know. I'll send his hotel information. Justin Johnson Arlington, Virginia on the plane ride home from vacation Sunday, I was catching up on episodes of the podcast I'd missed while away. My wife reached over to me and asked, would you like to watch this movie with me? To which I responded, no. Refusing to auto pay bills reminds me of a story about a stubborn old man who refused to set his air conditioner to a reasonable temperature. Except when his son came to visit and gave him a 50 lower the temperature, you know, so. That's wonderful. All right, if you're out on your bike tight everyone is always do wear white. Excuse me. Can I help you?
