Tony Kornheiser
Hey, it's Tony. On today's show, we'll talk about the huge things that happened in the world of sports this weekend, including Alex ovechkin becoming the NHL's all time goal scored leader. We'll talk about that in the men's and women's final four with Michael Wilbon. And then we'll preview the men's championship game with PAT40. But first, commerce. Ultimately, she was able to back out a little bit and then back out completely. These signs are very, very strong and they are expandable. So you can't try to, if you try to pull the sign out, you just pull one of the three or four legs out and you're not doing anything. And I was, and I think this is fair to say, as people would predict, I was utterly useless.
Michael Wilbon
Did you get a couple good jokes in?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, well, I know I was thinking of them, but I didn't say anything. The Tony Kornheiser show is on now, so it was a very big weekend in sports. It really was. And so I don't know how much I should talk about the Valero Open, which I'm the only person who watched. Brian Harmon got a new putter. Yeah. Brian Harmon in a situation where a three stroke lead evaporated and then was back in 20 minutes. Brian Harmon won. Brian Harmon is top of mind for me because he won the U.S. junior at Columbia Country Club over 20 years ago and then he won the saddle shoes. Yeah, with saddle shoes. With spats. I think they were spats.
Michael Wilbon
Good, good. On the first hole, right.
Tony Kornheiser
Ye. From 6ft and 14ft. Good, good. It's like the Legends. Yeah. And yeah, we, we are only allowed two putts no matter what. He also won the British Open a couple of years ago. He's a short guy and he's. He has a waggle that out. Sergio's Sergio. But he. I have a soft spot in my heart for him, and so I'm glad when he wins. We don't want to hear about that. You probably don't want to hear about the Nats and the Nats bullpen. Kyle Finnegan had my problem. My problem with Kyle Finnegan is that he actually saved both games.
Michael Wilbon
Yep. Series win.
Tony Kornheiser
He tortures you. It's not if he'll walk somebody, it's how many he'll walk. It's not if he'll give up a hit, it's how many hits he'll give up.
Michael Wilbon
Let's just put someone on third.
Tony Kornheiser
That's what he does.
Pat Forde
This is a Don Stanhouse, like, fullback situation.
Tony Kornheiser
It is. And yet I have to be fair and honest here. He saved both games. He needed calls to get out of both games. He needed appeal calls to get out of both. But he. But he saved both games. So I can't get all that angry. So I'll leave that aside and I'll mention the three things that were consequential in sports, really consequential. And I'll put them in an order that I think is important. Wilbourne disagrees with me. Wilbond disagrees with me. So I'm telling you that Will Bonnet will be on the show later. He disagrees with me. I believe that Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's record, with Wayne Gretzky in attendance and everything that happened, I believe that that is the most consequential thing that happened. Because there's a final Four for the women and a final Four for the men every single year. Every single year. That's just. Who's in it this year? Every single year, someone doesn't break a record. I believe that the records in sports, like football, the NFL and the NBA are meaningless records. Not that they're not important, but nobody knows they. You may know who holds them, but you don't know the number. You don't know the number. You knew 894. You knew the number. You know 714, which to me is still the record. I know people have gone past 7:14 to be 714. Babe Ruth is still the record. So if Wayne Gretzky holds a record, the greatest hockey player of all time, then it's meaningful. And if he's there to see Alexander Ovechkin Break it. And they embrace warmly. And it looks like, you know, it doesn't look like Gretzky's jealous. And he shouldn't be jealous, because if you take Gretzky's assists alone, he has more points than anyone's goals plus assists. Yeah, it's not, you know, he's the greatest of all time. And so to me, the two in Washington on Friday night to tie and the one on Long island yesterday to win, and the way he reacted, you know, swan diving on full belly floss. Yeah, it was just great.
Pat Forde
Just exuberant.
Michael Wilbon
It was just for the fountain.
Tony Kornheiser
It was great. And it's his shot. It's his shot. It's the left side power play shot. You don't even hold the puck. You bang it in, it comes to you, you bang it in, you time it.
Michael Wilbon
Video work. Right before that, they. They sort of zoom up to the box where Gretzky, you can see him look to his left and go, it's gonna happen.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. So Gretzky's there with his wife, Bettman's there, Ovechkin's wife, his mom, I guess his father in law, who. Father in law, looks younger than his wife, you know, I mean, looks like a 12 year old father in law. Anyway, his kids are there.
Michael Wilbon
OV Junior.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. OV Junior. Which isn't even his name.
Michael Wilbon
That's a great jersey.
Tony Kornheiser
It's not even his name. Anyway, so to me, that's the most consequential thing Wilbourne will tell you. No, I was. I was all over the country. Nobody talked about it all. They only talked about basketball. Well, I would, of course, point out that Wilbourne is more known for basketball than hockey. And so anyway, Wilbourne will say the most important thing probably was the women's final. And the women's final was a terrible game. Yeah, it's a terrible game. UConn destroyed South Carolina. Humiliated South Carolina beyond anything I imagined. Just like they had humiliated South Carolina in the regular season. South Carolina had won three national championships since Connecticut won one. They are the defending champions, just from last year. They're a great team. That's a great program. UConn crushed them. Can somebody get me the statistics on the second quarter and the third quarter, the total points that UConn got, second quarter, third quarter, as opposed to South Carolina. Do you come back from that if you're South Carolina? Sure, because there's only 15 programs in America that matter in women's college basketball. And you can rebuild right away because you want to go to South Carolina, you Want to play for Dawn Staley because she's got three rings, but boy, oh, boy, that was humiliating. Got numbers.
Pat Forde
UConn outscored them 1712 in the second quarter. That's plus 5 and 26.6.
Michael Wilbon
16.
Tony Kornheiser
That's plus 15. Yeah. Plus 15 when the game, you know, and. And it just. It was a 40 point game at one point. Yeah. Total humiliation. And I would mention that the ratings of that game, the overnight ratings, were down over 60% from last year. Because last year was Caitlin Clark. My point would always be Caitlin Clark changed the dynamics of women's basketball.
Pat Forde
Oh, yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Down and a good rating for women's basketball, but down 64% from last year. I would say. I would have that second, though. I would. And I would have the men's Final Four third. Because it happened that, you know, 15 years ago. It feels like it happened on Saturday, and now we're into Monday. And both those games were really good games. Yes. Florida did what it does. It's behind in a game. Something happens and they win the game. That's a rivalry game. And SEC rivalry game. Florida beats Auburn now for the second time this year, Auburn has not beaten them. Auburn was the overall number one seed, but Florida is a crazy talented team. J. Billis got both of these, right? Of course. Yeah. And then Duke choked. They gagged.
Michael Wilbon
It's the only way you can.
Tony Kornheiser
They're up double figures with about five minutes to go.
Michael Wilbon
They're up six with 32 seconds.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, they're up. They're up. They gagged the game.
Michael Wilbon
They couldn't get the ball in.
Tony Kornheiser
No. Couldn't get the ball in. There's nothing. You know. Is some of that coaching? Yeah, coaching and playing. You want to say they're freshmen. They've never been in that situation before. That's all fine. That's all good. But the other team's tough. The other team, as Bill has said on pti, or maybe said it on this show, the other team lives in close games. Lives in grinded out games. Has a million of them. Wins them all, knows how to do it. Duke's won its last 15 games by 15 or more.
Pat Forde
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Duke was inexperienced in that moment and it showed. And they gagged. No, they gagged. Are they a better team than you? I don't know. Houston's really good. You know, these are all four number one seeds. Everybody knows these teams. They've seen him. Houston's been good for three or four years. Real good.
Michael Wilbon
Were you okay with Cooper Flag's last shot?
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. Why? What was Wrong with it?
Michael Wilbon
I'm just asking.
Tony Kornheiser
He front rimmed it. Yeah. I was totally okay with it and I know the best player and it's.
Pat Forde
An open look and I know there's a lot of flack about the, the foul that he got called for over the back.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, it didn't look like a foul.
Pat Forde
Yeah, it didn't look like a foul, but it didn't matter because the guy was going to get the ball anyways.
Tony Kornheiser
It's, you know, at that point it was, you know, they, they Duke gagged the game. Yeah. And I was rooting for Duke. My daughter in law went to Duke.
Pat Forde
I immediately thought, tough Sunday in our house. It's just not a good moment over at Michael's club.
Michael Wilbon
But great. Sans text.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Yes. Sands doesn't like Duke, still hates Duke. Likes sports.
Pat Forde
Very clear on that.
Tony Kornheiser
Like sports. Does not like Duke used a word we can't use. Could. We're not. No. And we're just, we're just not. So, you know, to me that was third. Now what is most important today? Well, the look ahead, I mean, most important today is the look ahead to the final four to me, because that game, that game is going to. It's not going to get the kind of number that if Duke was in it, it would get. Houston and Florida are not bringing a Duke number. They're not. It's that simple.
Michael Wilbon
Don't you feel like there's often fatigue at this point of the tournament? You just sort of working to get past the finals now?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I think that's probably true. Wilbourne wants to get past it so we can get the NBA because that's all he cares about is the NBA, which is fine. I think that whatever rating the women's college game got is largely attributable to Connecticut. Paige Becker's Connecticut. Geno, Auriemma. Yeah. These are names that people know over a long period of time. They know who these people are. Gino Oriema's record in the final is 12 and 1. Oh my God. 12, 1. I mean John Wooden's record is probably better. John Wooden is probably 10 and oh, in the finals or something like that. I don't know that he ever lost one. But you know, Geno Wariami, 12 and one. That's a wow. This is the Tony Kornheiser show. Getting engaged. That's a big decision. Shopping for an engagement ring. Somehow that's an even bigger one. Cut, color, clarity, carrot. The four C's. It's like a whole new language. But there's One decision that makes everything else easier. And this is the Augusta Women's Amateur Tournament.
Michael Wilbon
Yes. We are officially in Masters week.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. And. And we will see that today on pti as. As the home studio today will have a master's flag and a master's gnome. Isn't the gnome courtesy of Jolene? It is. So those will be up on the.
Michael Wilbon
Set getting ready to share, but hopefully with fine sand.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, that. That's right. So the Augusta Women's national was won by a woman from Spain.
Michael Wilbon
Correct.
Tony Kornheiser
Totally charming.
Michael Wilbon
And the stories about her grow even after the win. If you were to guess how many of these amateur events have been at Augusta, what would your number be?
Tony Kornheiser
The Women's National.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
It's a relatively new event.
Tony Kornheiser
Five or six.
Michael Wilbon
Okay. This was the sixth edition, and like anything, it now feels like it's been there forever.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. Because that's what Augusta is great at. They're good at. They're great at tradition.
Michael Wilbon
And so you look at this. This starts with just seeing the photos of the women arriving for dinner. And you see the. The first two rounds at Champions Gate, and you had great weather, so you had a lot of low rounds by the first page of the leaderboard. And what's so wonderful about this is you get to see the chorus more closely playing the way it was designed. So you're seeing players.
Tony Kornheiser
It's not overpowered.
Michael Wilbon
Right. You're seeing players hit the types of second shots that Mackenzie wanted you to be hitting into these greens, the. The types of iron shots and woods even, that you would want to see on par threes. So you're seeing players walk from green to tease, and you're still seeing what. What the designer would say is a courageous shot. So, again, this comes back to the 13th hole, where your eventual Winner is sitting there with her caddy deciding, do I go for it, do I not? She is a right handed player. You are hitting from a hook lie to what requires a cut shot to hold the green. She pulls it off. And in a move that sort of looks back to the first event where you see Jennifer Kupcho and Maria Fassi sort of embracing as they're walking to that 13th green. She sort of like hugs her caddy and they know it's not over yet. But that is sort of this, this, this final gesture that says I have come from behind. She ends up winning over Asterix Tally who has one of the coolest names in golf.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Pat Forde
Asterix Talley.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah. Opens the, opens the final round with an eagle at the first shoots of 68 and has a, has a bit of a comeback at the end with a birdie at 17. She also overtakes the co leader in Lottie Woad who won, who won it and had birdie. British herself. Should have birdie 12. The ball hangs on the edge, should have birdies 15. And so many of these moments it's, you are inches from a shot that ends up, you know, pin high right next to it and, and something that does not. So you see that with, with her bunker shot on 15 for Lottie Wot and then again her trying to save par on 16 when she still has that puntress chance but really fun winner. And afterwards she's celebrating, she's getting texts by all the Spanish winners. She's out to a steak dinner, eating a T bone and I think a filet and wants to get, that's what.
Tony Kornheiser
We call a junior dinner.
Michael Wilbon
Wants to get an azalea tattoo.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, she wants to get an azalea tattoo. And she was asked about a particular conversation with the caddy that seemed to be at a moment that was decisive. What was the conversation? Oh, it was about a banana. We ate a banana. We wanted to talk about the banana. She was lovely, she was charming. She also, she's Spanish and Jose Maria Olathabel was there to greet her and congratulate her. And she recalled that the first time they met she called him Lara Thobel. She got his name wrong, said, well I can't do that again, I got his name wrong. She was vivacious.
Michael Wilbon
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
In a second language. In a second language, yeah.
Michael Wilbon
Senior K state starts all in that second nine. Speaking about this, you know, the connection to the Spanish history at that course. She's pulling back on lessons that she has been handed down from Sevy about hitting A bunker shot which she uses to save par. You know, keep the hands back, add some extra loft at the bottom.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. So it was really lovely. It's a lovely event and it does kick off Masters week. They will not be playing today or there's no crowds.
Michael Wilbon
There will likely be no crowds. There's thunderstorms and some lightning this afternoon. But that is a, that is a tough pill to swallow if you got through the lottery to go to Monday. And Monday is always a dicey day because you just don't know who's going to be out there for how long. So yesterday you got to see Scotty Scheffler goes out for the 1:30 tee time playing with his mom in a two ball.
Tony Kornheiser
Is that right?
Unknown Speaker
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
That's great. As it turns out, I did play with someone over the weekend. I played on Saturday with the unique and great Henry Delozer who has played in the Masters twice. Member at Columbia. He's played in the Masters twice, won the Maryland State Open and won, you know, a bunch of things to qualify. And Henry told me when he played, both times he played, he went the week before. He played it as, as much as he could play it.
Michael Wilbon
Why wouldn't you?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, as much as he could play it. And he loved it. Who doesn't love it? You know, of course he loved it. He said they feed you, you can have the food.
Unknown Speaker
It's very good.
Tony Kornheiser
So it was great to play with Henry. I was, you know, I only finished, I would say, 60 strokes behind him in one day. You're listening to the Tony Kornheiser show. This is the game time read. Pol in Louisville, Kentucky, who is the TK Show's official chocolate brand marketeer, said thank you for reading my letter on last week's Monday pod. It was absolute thrill to hear it made the cut. As I said then, the chocolate you need to try is Hershey's Symphony milk chocolate. I heard you're interested in trying some so I'm sharing this box of products. I hope you will enjoy Hershey's Symphony as well as some of the other amazing products we make. If you find anything you like, I'd love to hear about it. We love hearing and seeing people's reaction to the products we make. As our company purpose states, we strive to make more moments of goodness. Thanks for all the great stories, sports analysis and fun. This podcast is always a highlight of my week. P.S. tell fellow Hershey Littles, Pete Kelly and Chris Yost eat it. And I imagine it means to eat the Chocolate Symphony. Yes, it's a big box and I've got my eye on a lot of things.
Pat Forde
By the way, I have stats on Wooden. In 1948 he led Indiana State to the NAIB National Tournament Final. Losing, losing to Louisville. That was the only championship game when coach team ever lost. Yeah, he's pretty good.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, it's the best of all time. Yeah. I will take a break. Michael Wilbon when we return. I'm Tony Kornheiser. This segment is made possible by bank of America. This is the Tony Korneiser Show.
Tony Kornheiser
This is Joy in the Wildfire. This is a song called Aftershocks. We played her stuff. Samantha Joy Perlman. We played a few times. She writes. Thank you so much for your kind words about my music. My favorite college professor reached out to me saying he heard our song on your show that really meant the world to me. Music connects. You connect. Isn't that nice?
Pat Forde
That is lovely.
Tony Kornheiser
You never know who the Littles are. It's really a great thing. This is again Joy in the Wildfire and it's Called Aftershocks, and it plays in. Michael Wilbon and I spent the open of the show talking about the three major events over the weekend. Alexander Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's record in front of Wayne Gretzky. And the ceremony afterwards, the Women's Final Four, which concluded yesterday, which was an unbelievable result to me. Unbelievable. And the Men's Final Four, that had two quite good games. Quite good games, but feels. Feels like it was played 70 years ago. I ranked them in importance. In other words, if I was. If I'm scripting PTI today. And I said this, I said I would put Ovechkin first, I would put the women second, I would put the men third. And I don't know how much I would talk about what happened as opposed to what might happen tonight. I think you have a different order, right?
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I'd probably put the Women's Final Four first just because. And I don't know this yet. I don't know this. My suspicion is many more people watched the women's final four.
Tony Kornheiser
Their ratings were down 64% from last year. And Caitlin Clark.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I'm not comparing the last year. I'm comparing them to yesterday.
Tony Kornheiser
I suspect you are right about that. I do.
Unknown Speaker
And I was in, as I mentioned to you in a text and we talked on the phone.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
I was in three of the five biggest cities in America all week in order of chronology. Phoenix, Los Angeles and Chicago. And one, only one of those. It can be Hockey Mad.
Tony Kornheiser
Only Chicago. Chicago.
Unknown Speaker
But I was in the three. Those three cities. And not one person mentioned Ovechkin.
Tony Kornheiser
Me.
Unknown Speaker
Whether it was an elevator or an airport or walking down the street or. And a lot of people mentioned both. Finally, force.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, I. I would say in. To rebut that, to a degree, I think you are really much better known for your basketball than for your hockey.
Unknown Speaker
Yes, well, yes, but. But, you know, these. It was, again, put it this way, if there was a series going on in the Stanley cup, you know, and in Chicago, Tony, there's a different profile for me because I'm on radio there and talking about hockey more, but it just didn't come up. It did not come up once. You would think it would. That doesn't mean I don't think it's important, because I do think it's important. It's historic and it's important. And it involves also, it involves more than just Ovechkin. It involves the greatest player in that sport of all time ever. Period. No argument.
Tony Kornheiser
Who was so gracious he is great. Who was so wonderful in what he said about Ovechkin. There was no sense that he was peeved that his name was off the top line.
Unknown Speaker
None. So that would shock me because that's who.
Tony Kornheiser
You know him.
Unknown Speaker
That's who he has been a little bit. I do.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. I know.
Unknown Speaker
And, you know, talk about gracious. I mean, I've had a couple of episodes that I experienced with Wayne Gretzky, and that whether it was one time directed at me, I think I've told you in 2008, been a while now, when I suffered a heart attack, the first two people I heard from, the first two were in order. Daryl Green and Wayne Gretzky.
Tony Kornheiser
Wow.
Unknown Speaker
Who called to say, hey, what is it? What is the deal here? Are you okay? And, you know, Daryl Green is more expected. The friendship goes back 40 some years. Wayne Gretzky, who we are members of, of something similar, of something together in Arizona, at least we were. And just gracious. Just gracious. So him being gracious with, in his context, in his universe, with Alex Ovechkin comes as no surprise. But, you know, those three things. And actually, Tony, we could take the approach that, I don't know that we will. Of looking forward to the Men's Final Four tonight, which will be watched by many more people than both of those other things.
Tony Kornheiser
By miles. By miles.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And so, you know, I understand, you know, whichever way we go, but, yeah, in terms of just sort of what happened already, that's the way.
Tony Kornheiser
So I watched. I watched the Ovechkin ceremony three or four times because NHL Channel had it on and it was all over the place. And, you know, the goal, that's his goal. You get it on the power play on the left top, bang it in, you know, and the reaction is wonderful. And nobody on Long island seemed to be upset, you know, that it happened in their place. But I was stunned, Mike. They stopped that game for what seemed like an hour, and they went through all the stuff, and now they still have to play the game.
Unknown Speaker
I don't like that stuff.
Tony Kornheiser
It was weird.
Unknown Speaker
You do it when it's. I don't. That's just me. I don't. I don't. I don't like when they do that, even for anybody. I don't care. I don't care if it's Major League Baseball. I don't care if it's.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
You know, I remember when Walter Payton broke Jim Brown's record for rushing yards in a career, and I think it stopped for like five Seconds. Somebody handed him the ball. Yeah, maybe. Maybe it was. Maybe it was a minute.
Tony Kornheiser
This, this was 35, 40 minutes. This.
Unknown Speaker
Oh, no, no, no.
Tony Kornheiser
Know, you know, they had planned stuff.
Unknown Speaker
Indulgent just to indulge it. I just. This is not for me. And so I, I thought that the great. The coolest thing I heard was the Islanders coach talking about it. His. His just foray into what it meant. He watched it, he described it. The goal itself.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Wow. That was really cool to him.
Tony Kornheiser
The most amazing thing to me, because you and I are completely in agreement that Wayne Gretzky is by miles the greatest dodging player of all time.
Unknown Speaker
No doubt.
Tony Kornheiser
The most amazing thing is that Ovechkin did it in the same amount of games. I never would have bet on that.
Unknown Speaker
Never. I wouldn't have either. I thought it'd be hundreds more games. But the coolest number to me is not that one. The coolest number to me is. He's also number one. Oveschkin is now. Has been in game winning goals. Yeah, see that, that, that. Yeah, that's not some made up, you know, 25. Five, five, five and five.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Unknown Speaker
That, that's. That's as simple, as elemental as it gets. Yeah, it's one more games than anybody.
Tony Kornheiser
No, I can't. I couldn't imagine Gretzky's record being broken. So I can't imagine Ovechkin's being broken, but maybe it will be. Maybe that happens. Let's. Let's go to the women's final, which I know how much. First of all, you were rooting for UCLA to beat Connecticut. Connecticut killed them. And then you would root for South Carolina because you friends with Dawn Staley and Connecticut killed them. I was stunned. How about you?
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I was done about the UCLA result. I said Friday, going out, you know, I'm rooting for ucla, but I fear something else. Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
Right, right.
Unknown Speaker
That's what I fear. And then because of the way they beat ucla, I was like, and I look forward to that game all year since they beat, you know, South Carolina handily the first time. But you're watching the game. There are times where this happens. There are times where it happens. UNLV beat Duke's brains in like this 30 points 30 years ago.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Unknown Speaker
And so there are times when there's a team that is just demonstrably better and you realize it. Not because the game is over. You realize it when it's happening. You realize that Rebecca Lobo said it and I said it to you almost in Live time. Rebecca Lobo said, Remember, UConn has likely three overall number ones on the floor together at once.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
And when you realize that and people had already said the South Carolina doesn't have a lottery pick this time. Not this time. They've had them. They've had the overall.
Tony Kornheiser
They've had overall number ones. Yeah, they've had ones.
Unknown Speaker
Not only do we not have. So it's not three to one overall number ones, it's three to nothing in this game. And there's not a lottery pick. And you're like, oh. Part of Dawn Staley's reaction. She did not. Dawn was not yelling and screaming. She realized as she's watched. Dawn Staley knows who's on the court.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
She knows if there's an advantage, she's not going to take her girls apart with a tongue lashing because she knows what's happening and we know what's happening. When you watch those three players, and one of them is local in Washington, D.C. and you knew more about the mom.
Tony Kornheiser
I know. Yeah. The mom played at Georgetown. Mom played at Georgetown and then briefly, I think, in the wnba. But she was all Big East. Mom was all Big east.
Unknown Speaker
And she's local.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Unknown Speaker
So, no, I did. I was not aware of that.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Until they showed her and got into the history.
Tony Kornheiser
But I think her name, if I'm. If I'm not mistaken, it's Katie Smirker Duffy.
Unknown Speaker
Okay, there you go.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
And so you and Neville knew that.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Filled me in during that game. But I'm just. When you see the three of them on the floor and you realize their names are likely to be called 1, 1 and 1.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. No, they're okay. Gino is 12 and 1 in finals.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, yeah. Yeah. He's.
Tony Kornheiser
And by the way, he should quit.
Unknown Speaker
That wasn't. That wasn't even the biggest margin by which he'd won a championship. And it wasn't second.
Tony Kornheiser
Wow. I just. That was just. I guess I bought in. I bought in to South Carolina, of course.
Unknown Speaker
Me, too. They were defending national.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, Yes. I bought into them times.
Unknown Speaker
So this is.
Tony Kornheiser
No, you know, they had revenge against Texas, and I figured they'd have revenge against UConn and they got killed.
Unknown Speaker
I thought it'd be a close game and they would. And they would win South Carolina.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
But again, once you see, you know, Paige Becker's name is going to be called first.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, she'll be one week. Yeah, she'll be one.
Unknown Speaker
She's going to be one.
Tony Kornheiser
That's on you're Right. All right, well, let's look forward. Duke choked. I mean, there's no other. It's not no other word. Duke gag.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. But I'm going to give most of the credit for that to Houston. They really hunted them down.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
And they hunted them. They hunted down a bunch of freshmen with veteran players.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Unknown Speaker
That's what used to happen. That's what used to happen when unlv, and even as recently as Florida would return entire squads.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Unknown Speaker
Duke did it once. Duke returned the entire team and beat unlv. Yes. And so UNLV had a veteran squad when they won and a veteran squad when they lost. So Duke. Duke did. I was waiting for Duke to lose earlier in the tournament, to be honest with you. But. But. But Cooper Flagg is. He's everything you think. But I will say this. There are three times now with Duke lost this season, and all three of those times, and I'm watching with my son who's been talking about Cooper Flagg since he was in eighth grade. I'm like, okay, it's time to Cooper flag. And then when he gets to. You can actually get to see him this year. You know, but we're sitting there a lot of time, and Matthew says on the last possession each time that the ball should be in Proctor's hand. You know, he's not. Flag's not that great a ball handler. You want Proctor setting up flag. And of course, they give the ball to flag. They don't run a play. John Shocker, who by all measure is a great coach. They don't run a play.
Tony Kornheiser
No. They say, win it for us. Win it for us, kid.
Unknown Speaker
Each time it was a blunder or a miss.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
By Cooper Flagg. Now this, you have. You pay attention to this. And by the way, again, this kid to me is a beast. And if you told me I get to watch him because the Wizards win the lottery and they draft this kid, I'd be thrilled to watch him all the time. But the great, great, great ones, they come through in those moments in the NCAA Tournament.
Tony Kornheiser
They do.
Unknown Speaker
And so I don't know what it means was he failed by a great coach and a great team in a moment, was something put on him that shouldn't be? Or if you remember, Michael Jordan didn't have the ball the whole possession. The plate was set up for Jordan.
Tony Kornheiser
As a freshman and hit a shot as a freshman. Right.
Unknown Speaker
As a freshman, Carmelo Anthony. I'm pretty sure he didn't have the ball on whatever the great play was. He hit a shot. So I, you know, I, I don't know what it means, but. So my takeaway is, oh, my God, Cooper Flagg is great. And then I have to say, wait a minute now, in his greatness, even there is this thing. And what is that going to mean going forward?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, we'll see.
Unknown Speaker
I'm going to try to decide that.
Tony Kornheiser
We're going to see because we're going to see over the next 10 to 12 years. We're going to see is he going to be Paul George or is he going to be Steph Curry?
Unknown Speaker
And greatness is going to be expected of him.
Tony Kornheiser
It'll be demanded of him certainly at too young age. Too young. Right away.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
All right. I will talk to you later. All right, Tom Michael Wilbon, Boys and girls, we will take a break. We will bring in Pat 40. I am Tony Kornheiser. Gotta love that. Hope you like it. Have a good one. Katie. Katie Martini.

We do like it.

Yeah, it sounds like the Bengals. I like this kind of music. Michael. The people like Katie demartini want to send in their original music to play on this podcast. How do they do it?
Michael Wilbon
Send us your music by emailing it to jinglesonykronizershow.com she plays in Pat 40.
Tony Kornheiser
Who spent Friday watching or Saturday rather watching the final four. Men's final Four and then Sunday writing as well. And the first question is the most obvious question which is are you surprised by the results? These are ones. These are ones. Are you surprised by the results?
Unknown Speaker
No, I'm really not, Tony. I mean I really thought these were toss up games going in, played out largely that way. You know, Duke I guess was a slightly larger favorite and looked like maybe the best team for about, I don't know, 35 minutes, maybe even longer and then things changed drastically. But you know, these are four really good teams with that don't have many appreciable weaknesses and I think that it played out that way, two really, really good games.
Tony Kornheiser
Duke is the most well known of the four teams that were in this certainly for Auburn, not known as a basketball school. Florida had great success with Billy Donovan. Not known as a basketball school. Houston or going back to Olajuwon, certainly known but had been in a lull. Duke is the best known. So people look at Duke and maybe they think Duke is better than it is. Duke's got four freshmen out there. The obvious questions are did Duke gag? Did Flag gag, Did Shire gag?
Unknown Speaker
Yes, they did. They absolutely did. And you know, credit absolutely to Houston for just saying we're not going to be beaten and we're going to find a way. But to lose a 14 point second half lead to get outscored 90 in the last 35 seconds, that was ugly. That was a bad ending for Duke and frankly they had not been a good end of game team. In games that were close, they, you know, the only games they lost they stomped almost everybody. But when they lost they usually ended with bad offensive possessions, blowing leads. Even when they won the last game against North Carolina in the ACC tournament where they were hit by 24 and it came down, they only won because of a lane violation by North Carolina. So there is still a maturation level I think that needs to be reached by John Shire coaching in those situations where you've got to be able to figure out how to win those games and have at least, you know, one or two more good possessions when everything's on the line. So you know, it was a very, very young team for Flag and Concaniple and Malawatch. They got three freshmen factoring in there prominently. So you can understand that to agree. I mean Houston really old, mature team and they certainly looked like it compared to, compared to Duke at the end.
Tony Kornheiser
I said this earlier in the show, but Jay Billis made this point when we had him on that Houston lives in close games. Houston never gives up in close games. Houston knows how to grind and win close games. And he said and Duke doesn't. They just don't. And, and he felt, he felt Houston would win. And in fact Houston won in exactly the way he talked about them winning. This sort of feels. Who did Calipari lose to with Arkansas when he had a 13 point lead with three and change to go. He can't lose that game. Right. That a couple of weeks ago. This is that game. Right. You can't lose Texas Tech. Yeah, you can't. You can't lose this game if you do.
Unknown Speaker
No, no.
This was.
I thought it was actually quite reminiscent of Calipari with Memphis against Kansas in the 2008 National Championship game. That one Memphis was up nine with two minutes to play. This one Duke was up nine with two minutes to Play. And then they couldn't make a single play that they needed to make.
Tony Kornheiser
Couldn't down the ball, couldn't inbound the ball. So that team is. Does anything change or is that team disbanded? Do those guys come out. It's over. That Duke is a one, it's a one year wonder. That's all it is.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, yeah.
And you know, they'll have probably the best recruiting class coming in again next year and that'll be kind of the dynamic that's going to be Duke probably. It's going to be a little bit Caliperi esque. We're going to recruit so well that we're going to be young because you know we're going to get the best guys and then the best guys are going to go pro. Certainly Flag's going to be the number one pick but Kneppo is going to be picked high. I mean they've got multiple guys and I will say I thought, well, one thing that really surprised me about their team is Mason Gillis transferred in as a fifth year guy from Purdue who was that glue guy for Purdue and tough situations and he never really cracked the rotation at Duke and boy, I thought they could have used a fifth year tough smart guy on the floor at the end of that game.
Tony Kornheiser
Let me go to the other game. Florida now 2 and oh versus Auburn this year. Did Auburn gag?
Unknown Speaker
I don't think so. I mean I thought, I really thought that Florida was going to win. You know, I thought it would be a close game and it was, it.
Tony Kornheiser
Was a really good game. Really good.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And you know, Walter Clayton just can make ridiculous shots, absurd high level NBA shots, you know, where you're, you're going off of one foot, you're floating sideways, you're fading away, and you're 23ft away, and you make it, and there's just not much you can do about that. He was just extraordinary. You know, Auburn, I thought they looked like they were a little bit out of gas and Florida was a little bit deeper. Jani Broom, second half they kind of overwhelmed, I think, and wore him down to a degree. And, you know, I think he had 12 in the first half and three in the second. You know, I. I think I picked Florida when the whole thing. I'll stick with that for Monday night. But I was not shocked, I guess, the way that came out.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. I wanted to ask you about Florida and Houston. I mean, Florida's got a whole team. It's not five guys. They're not going to wear down. They got a whole bunch of guys on that team, and they are used to, certainly in this tournament, being behind by considerable margins and winning games. This would seem to me to be the worst sort of team that Houston could face.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, right. Neither. Yeah, neither team's gonna crack, that's for sure. And, yes, Florida's like, okay, fine, you know, throw whatever you've got at us. We'll take it and we'll figure it out. We'll find a way to. To win the game. And it's usually Clayton. I mean, they put a whole lot on his shoulders, and we'll see. You know, he could be.
Tony Kornheiser
He could be worn out. If he has a bad game, they're in trouble.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah.
Oh, absolutely. They need him to be a hero. If he doesn't score 25, I would say, then. Then they're in trouble because they do have other good players. Elijah Martin's really good, and Thomas Hawk, one of their big guys, is really good, but he's undoubtedly the player they need. Like, just, hey, go save us. Go score some points right here. And if, you know, if Houston can figure out how to lock him up, then. Then it could be a difficult night for them. But. But he's been impossible to lock up. He's been unbelievable.
Tony Kornheiser
So we know that Kelvin Sampson knows what he's doing, and we know that he's a really good game coach and he changes things. Do we know anything about Todd Golden?
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I mean, he is a good coach. He's. His results speak for themselves. And he said, you know, he's a total New age guy. He's a, you know, super heavy on analytics and probabilities and, you know, in this situation, we can figure out a way to get five more out of a possession in the last minute of a half than the other team, that sort of thing. I mean, he's really deep into those numbers and it works for him. But I also think that he's done a really good job building a roster and building a team and coaching them through games. And as you know, as you pointed out, they do. They have been behind. They have been under duress, often multiple times, and they don't crack. They don't panic. They find a way. So I think Golden's a very, very good coach.
Tony Kornheiser
This does not seem like a ratings grabber, does it?
Unknown Speaker
No, no, it's not. Some of us, perhaps, in the media workroom, yes, they were lamenting the traffic numbers. We're going to get on our stories here for this one because it's just like, you know, Florida is a football school. Houston has a small fan base, it's a big school, but it's not like a rabid fan base that just.
Tony Kornheiser
No. And they've been in small conferences for a hundred years. You know, they don't have any association with the Big 12. They don't. They really don't know.
Unknown Speaker
They don't. They have an unbelievably tortured history at the Final Four and in the NCAA Tournament. You go back to Elvin Hayes, who had the bad luck and bad timing to be in college the same time as Lu. Alcindor.
Tony Kornheiser
Beat him once. Not twice.
Unknown Speaker
Beat him once.
Tony Kornheiser
Twice. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
No, lost. Lost twice in national semifinals to him. Then by slam a jama, went to the final four. 82, 83, 84. But guess what? There was Michael Jordan and Dean Smith and Sam Perkins and James Worthy. And then there was Patrick Ewing. And in between there was that miracle fluke airball for Jim Balvano. So they've had a tough, tough bit of like, wrong place, wrong time, I think is a program. But they're, you know, this team may finally do it. They may finally get that championship.
Tony Kornheiser
I got a nice note from Rob Stronik that the NCAA had set aside a seat for Feinstein, put his credentials on it and made sure that it was not, you know, occupied. Did you see anything like that? That's very nice. Very warm moment for Feinstein. I think I did.
Unknown Speaker
I did see it, and I really liked it and appreciated it because, you know, having a Final Four or an incident like tournament without John Jr. Feinstein just has been. It's been strange, a little empty. So that was a very nice gesture, for sure.
Tony Kornheiser
I felt exactly the same way, as did his family. That was really nice. I know you said you didn't watch the women. Boy, oh boy. Gino orem is now 12 and one in final games. I mean, he destroyed that team. He just they're the defending champions.
Unknown Speaker
He's the greatest women's coach certainly of all time. I don't think it's close. Pat Summitt, outstanding. Dawn Staley, outstanding. But Gino Oriema's his own level.
Tony Kornheiser
That's what I think. All right. Enjoy the game tonight and thanks as always. We don't plug the podcast because it's on hiatus or are you back yet?
Unknown Speaker
Correct. Now we're still, still hiatusing, right?
Tony Kornheiser
It's a great word. As a verb, hiatusing as a gerund. It's great. Thank you, Pat.
Unknown Speaker
All right.
Thanks, Tony.

Tony Kornheiser
Isn't that nice?
Pat Forde
Yeah, it's very lovely.
Tony Kornheiser
What they give you.
Pat Forde
They gave me some potato clips, which are like clips that you hang things up with in the shape of potato chip. They gave me my own microphone.
Tony Kornheiser
Wonderful. What a lovely card. Yeah.
Pat Forde
So it's just.
Tony Kornheiser
Is it edible, the microphone?
Pat Forde
I don't think in the microphone is edible.
Tony Kornheiser
Noxy also sent me some candy. Some very nice. Some lint candy and some gummy bears.
Pat Forde
Very nice.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
I'm very happy for you guys.
Tony Kornheiser
They're very nice. Well, you can have some. I mean, your jealousy is obvious. It's okay. All right, before we get to the mailbag. Oh, did you do the Bethesda bag lid? Yes, yes. Before we get to the mailbag, let me just say. Is she really going out with him? Well, there she is. Let's ask her. Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing? Mm. Jim must be great riding with him. Is he picking up after school today? Mm. By the way, where'd you meet him?
Unknown Speaker
Bang.
Tony Kornheiser
I met him at the candy store. He turned around and smiled at me. You get the picture? Yes, we see. And that's when I fell for the leader of the pack. The Shangri La is produced by Shadow Morton Bang. I met him at the candy store. Just so great. So great. Let's get to the mailbag. From Chris Foster in Midland, Texas, former official Subaru rep of the Tony Kornheiser show. Newly unemployed, he puts in parentheses. Wow. Dear Mr. Tony, have you or Clara ever seen a Mentos commercial? What does that mean?
Pat Forde
Have you never seen that Mentos ad where, like, there's a car stock and like four guys, like pick it up and move it and at the end they sort of tip their hat and they're like, oh, the Fresh Maker Mentos.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, no. Yeah. Tim Osmo from the Midwest. You must have been so relieved that Clara's car ran into that street sign before it hit the rv. That's funny, Greg Owens. Your story about your dog walker Clara, reminded me of something that happened last year with my oldest masculine child. Gregory Jr. Aka aka Scoop, had just turned 17 and had some repairs done on his very modest, I. E. Crappy white sedan. Air conditioning was just repaired, which is a big one for Atlanta, where we live. We attended a local church and Scoop volunteers on Sunday morning, so he leaves about 20 minutes ahead of me and the crew. When I get to the stadium sized parking lot and headed over to where we usually park, I saw across the way a white bumper down in the ravine and said to the woman to whom I'm related by marriage, someone had a wild Saturday night and thought nothing else of it until two minutes before the service starts screaming. Scoop calls me and I pick up. He tells me, dad, apparently my car was in an accident. Me? You had an accident in the car? Him? No, sir. Needless to say, you can guess the punchline here. Turns out the car traveled about 75 yards, jumped two curbs and made it all the way to its final resting place, only taking a singular parking cone as a casualty, I felt too bad for my guy to even be upset in the slightest. However, Scoops brothers and sisters soon had a field day and still do when the time is right. You were really on a roll and dare was neutral on the subject for big faves. Thanks for all. You do. Have a great week. Oh, Scoop has a slightly less crappy car now, and we pray extra hard at church it stays in its parking spot. You know, from here on out. Greg Owens in Atlanta, Ben in Port Huynimi, California. As a fellow member of the Automobile Club of America, in Good standing for 39 years, I feel obliged to inform you that our memberships are not tied to our vehicles and we can use them for roadside assistance for any vehicle, whether it's our own, a friend, a dog walker's or a rental? I didn't know that.
Pat Forde
How about that?
Tony Kornheiser
I didn't know that. P.S. your wristwatch has a basil. Yeah, my wristwatch does. From Mark Corriere in Ellicott City, Maryland. Wilbaugh must have been so excited that you spent the opening segment of Friday's show discussing the association, the American Automobile Association. Tom Palmetier, Colonel, United States Army, Retired. You recently read an email from Michael Colburn, former director of the U.S. marine Band. During his tenure, I was commander at the U.S. army Band. Neither of us knew we were both Littles. Now I realize that what I thought was evidence of a not so friendly rivalry was really a TK salute. Ha. That's great. P.S. eat it, Saliza from Steve Lenowitz in Bonita Springs, Florida. After listening to Tuesday, I wondered if the new game might be who performed at your senior prom. This could be tough to beat Plain Edge High School I know Plain Edge High School on Long Island. Plain Edge High school, class of 1967, that veto and the Salutations and Jay and the Americans at the Huntington Townhouse. The latter is a lot better than the former. I know both and Jay and the Americans is better. Neil and Rockville. Sure, you might not love the flavor of a bold California red, but as we know, ain't nothing better than rolling out Vero highway with a big nasty redhead at your side. Jolene Jolene writes us he had Mark Feinstein on the show last week and figuring out his plans for the Masters. Michael was exactly correct in saying he needs to walk the second nine in order, but I would add do it the first thing in the morning before the golfers and patrons are on that side of the course, and after you've grabbed a cup of coffee and an egg salad sandwich for your walk. Shopping Advice the only way to get the collectible gnome is to do it first thing in the morning when the shop opens. Come with a written shopping list because the place is so overwhelming you need to be organized. When you come out of the pro shop, turn left and there is a spot to ship your purchases home. Tell Mark I'll meet them in the line Thursday and Friday morning we'll get his chair down on the 18 green. I'll be there at 5:45 in the morning. How great is Joey Norris? How great is Joe? From Neil Ervace, our lawyer friend in Littleton, Colorado. Quote I was utterly useless. I live for sleep. I'm unburdened by memory. That list or perhaps the first treat. That's the list. Or perhaps the first three tracks on Dan Burns AARP sponsored tribute album from Jim Moser in Landisville, Pennsylvania. On Friday's Mailbag segment, you read an email from Wynn Mossman, the lawyer from Idaho. He expressed hope that Dan Byrne could come up with rhymes for Turtle for a future song. Here's what I've come up with. Curdle fertile girdle hurdle hurtle myrtle as in crepe Myrtle and Myrtle beach or wordle a game on your phone. Michael can try to explain. If Mr. Byrne uses any of these in a song, I'm going to credit myself with an assist that will only leave me 9001962 behind Gretzky Lance Reed, Canton, Ohio so sorry the lyrics to Steely Dan's song My Old School didn't come to mind when Ole Anders was mentioned on Friday. Oleanders growing outside her door soon they're going to be in bloom up in Annandale. I can't stand her doing what she did before leaving. Like a gypsy queen in a fairy tale, you know? Come on, Steely Dan. Come on. I used to live near Bard College, that's in Annandale. But never realized those plants were poisoned. Information for life, Carla Corrado, I can't tell how do you feel about Kevin Willard? I'm not a fan. Kevin Sheehan is a fan. Oh, really? Kevin Sheehan likes him a lot. Kevin Sheehan explains everything that happened.
Pat Forde
Tried to sway you.
Tony Kornheiser
I'm he didn't. Papa Theum in Paris. You asked a couple of days ago why anyone would smuggle turtles in their pants. Simple answer. Straight cash, homie. Literally. Traffickers don't take Amex. Joel Carver, Coralville, Iowa Yesterday afternoon, while on my commute home from work, I got stuck behind three different Subarus going at least 10 miles slower than the traffic. I get it now. Took me long enough, but I get it. If you're out on your bike tonight, everyone, as always, do wear white.
Michael Wilbon
What does Argo mean?
Unknown Speaker
I don't know.
Michael Wilbon
You don't know?
Unknown Speaker
It means Argo itself.

It all looks so clear from there A little town along the hillside Quaint and safe and tucked far away from the city. The ground shook beneath our feet Mother Earth opened her mouth wide, Swallowed me whole and took me with the undertow I I lost you in the aftershock the aftershock I lost you in the aftershock Trying hard not to drown Sinking deeper every second Tracing the fault line that leads to a rift draw between us Searching for solid ground to find a way out of the wreckage Just as I reach you Another wave comes for the breaking I lost you in the aftershire the aftershocks I lost you in the aftershock the tower came down it fell to to the ground the tower came down the power we found yes run me around the tower came down the tower came down it fell to the ground the tower came down the power we found yeah swumming round the tower came down we rode with the tide we made make may not survive we may not survive we may not survive we may not survive we have to shine the falling over this again Thought that he was different unless.
