Hey, it's Tony. If you're hearing this, it means that Nigel has flushed the mouse and forgot to have me record something new. So who knows who our guests will be today? Maybe Mick Jagger, Sandy Koufax, Dalai Lama. Long hitter. The Lama? Probably not, but I guess you'll have to tune in to find out. But first, let's keep the sales weasels happy.
B
Previously on the Tony Kornheiser Show.
A
He introduced me to the new owner. I pledged my fealty to the store. Yep. Guaranteed parking. Well, like, if you get there, as I do, five minutes before open, it's.
C
Still a tough lot.
A
Yes. You know, they have about eight.
C
You want to make sure you back into those spots.
A
I didn't. And that made it tough backing out, you know, almost hitting a variety of cars.
B
The Tony Kornheiser show is on now.
A
We got a lot of things to get to in the open briefly. We'll get to things. I got this lovely letter with a big box of that from Gary Edel, the dad of my dad's chip.
C
The dad.
A
The dad. The actual dad. This is like talking to Jerry, right, dad? This is two. Two times that. Yeah. So, yeah, Gary down. He writes, happy holidays. I apologize for the amount of time that has passed since the last delivery of my dad's chips. I've been stuck on hold with my cable company for the past six months waiting to speak with a human being. Having finally spoken with a real person and lowering our cable bill to an amount that does not require a second mortgage, I'm back to focusing on my dad's chips. I'm happy to report that my dad's chips are now available. Listen to this. In over a thousand stores. Over a thousand stores, mostly on the east coast. But Littles might see the chips in places like Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Glendard, Montana, Lake Jackson, Texas, and Duncanville, Alabama. Littles can go to mydadschips.com on their Google machine to see all thousand stores that carry our chips. Thank you for the continued support. Continued support of my dad's chips. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. And he gave me some chips, James, the way you chip, you know, and it's just really good. It's really nice. And their stuff is really good. So if they're successful, makes me happy.
C
The boys enjoyed the French onion chips for lunch yesterday.
A
Good. That's good.
C
The captain likes to call him his son Chips because of that.
A
Well, it's very nice. Speaking of things you can buy, look at my son I went to a Safeway the other day. It doesn't matter what.
C
Safeway Digital coupon.
A
No, I don't have. Did you. I cannot. When I go to the checkout, I hand them my phone and they say to me, and by the way, none of these stores want you to check out with a real person. They want you to check out on the. Yeah, the self checkout. Yeah. No. So I hand them the phone, I say, I don't know how to use this. He says, go to your wallet. I said, I don't know what my wallet is. And then he says, I'm not going to do this. Go over to, you know, customer service. There's nobody at customer service.
D
Why would they.
A
I waited for 10 minutes. There's nobody there.
C
They're at self checkout.
A
Yeah, that's. So anyway. So, I mean, what is the point of having any Safeway stuff if you can't get the discounts? And I can't. Don't know how. Too old. And then the people at the. At the line, they don't want to do it for you. They want the line to keep. Anyway, that's not my point here. That's. That is a problem endemic to all supermarkets. I just want to be specific about this. I really like grapefruits. I really like to squeeze grapefruit juice. Haven't done it in years. I've been buying regular 100% grapefruit, but it doesn't taste as good as real grapefruits. So I went. Michael gave me a couple of grapefruits the other day.
C
It's like brewing your own coffee. There's something therapeutic about going through the process.
A
Yeah. And. And so I used these two grapefruits and remembered how great actual grapefruit juice is. So I went to the Safeway to buy grapefruits. And, you know, my experience tells me to feel the grapefruits. The thinner the skin, the more juice.
C
It's like picking a lime.
A
Yeah. It's just. Okay. Yeah. I'm not good at limes, but the thinner the skin, the more juice. Do you know how much grapefruit is?
E
One in one grapefruit?
D
I'm gonna say 2.89.
A
Yeah. 275. Oh, 279. 279. Who buys a single grapefruit? I was stunned. Well, I bought three. It was 10 bucks.
D
It should be about 60 cents.
A
I was. Yeah. The last time I actually.
C
Usually purchased by the bag.
A
Yeah, the bag with the, you know, the.
C
The netting.
A
Pink netting. Outside? Yeah, you get 10 or so. And it used to cost like $10. Now it would cost $30. I was amazed. Now, was it worth it? Yes, the grapefruit juice was great for me. It was worth it. I don't have to worry about that sort of stuff, but I just was amazed at how much money it cost.
C
Rite of passage boots. He was enjoying a halved grapefruit the other day. And of course, he finishes what he deems is the appropriate amount. He goes, no, no, son. There's a lot left in there. And I'm squeezing it over the bowl to get half of a cup.
D
How do you squeeze the grapefruits? Do you have, like, a pressure that you use that?
A
No, no, I have an electric thing.
D
Electric.
C
And it's got different. It's got different settings for pulp, you know, so.
D
Okay.
A
Oh, it does?
C
Yeah.
A
Oh, I didn't know that.
C
Well, yeah. Don't clean it.
A
Yeah, well, no, I. What do you mean? I don't clean it.
C
I just add it under the water. It's like the salad bowls.
A
No, I run it under the water to get the pulp out, and then I use my fingers to get the pulp out.
C
May I make a recommendation for you? There's a. There's a. A giant over the line in Maryland. They redid it. It's the West Bar giant. They all have a lot of people working the checkouts.
A
Okay, then.
C
I just do. It's an older clientele.
A
Yeah.
C
But there's always somebody ready to help.
A
Unbelievable. It's unbelievable how terrible it is.
D
Have you not tried Wegmans?
A
I've never been. I love Wegmans. I've had their food.
C
You have to be very careful, time of day, because sometimes I don't know how to get overrun.
A
And I think it's underground, and I.
D
Don'T like it is underground, but the parking is. Is actually doable.
A
Well, you'll show me next time. We'll go. All right. Let me get to a couple of things. Kansas City's done. They're done.
C
Fourth and done.
A
They're not going to make the playoffs this year. That's over for this year. Maybe they get back next year. If they don't get back next year, they're done. But they're done for this year. That's one. Secondly, the Washington football team, they stink.
C
At least we got the quarterback back for an hour.
A
Maybe less than an hour. And then he went out again. Why is he playing that game?
C
I don't understand the game of operation.
A
They lost 31. Nothing on the road in Minnesota. Minnesota's a bad team. Yes. Minnesota has quarterback problems. J.J. mcCarthy has played. I know.
C
Did you watch the first drive? It didn't seem like that.
A
Right down the field.
D
Yeah.
A
Made him look like. And you know when the coach of the Washington team is a defensive guy? Dan Quinn.
D
That's right.
A
They lost 31 nothing. They quit.
C
I just love the week before. We got our swagger back in the.
A
Loss, you know, just. Come on, get out of here. I was. I've never been a Dan Quinn guy, you know, I've seen him coach before. Never for me, so. But last year was great. And this year is equally terrible. And I don't know where they go next year because they have an old team. Zach Ertz, straight to the draft. He's done.
D
He's done.
A
That's an Achilles thing. He's in his 30s. He's had a really great career. He's done. They got a lot of guys on defense, Zachary on offense. A lot of guys on defense were old, but 31, nothing. That's terrible.
You know them and the stinking Wizards. The Wizards lose at home. The Wizards lose at home by 100.
C
What is the biggest fall for making it to the championship game the year before? What is the biggest fall?
A
Don't know. It's got to be probably this. This is close.
C
This is close.
A
This is close. Are they going to win five games?
C
I mean, they've got the tiebreaker over the Giants, I guess, at the bottom of the barrel.
A
How many games have they won? 3. I don't think they'll get to 5.
D
Because didn't the Titans. Did the Titans win yesterday? They did, yeah.
A
They beat Cleveland. Yeah. Yeah. They sting, too. Anyway, so let me get to the thing that is the biggest deal for me, and I just don't want to go back and forth with Wilbourne about this. Wilburn hates Notre Dame. Wilbon is in his glory. He'll tell you he respects Notre Dame like he respects the Green Bay Packers. And maybe that's true, but he hates them as well, so he's happy that they didn't make the playoffs. This is the big news out of the college football playoffs, that Notre Dame did not get in and Miami did. And what Mike will say and what anybody reasonable would say is, well, that was a head to head. That was a head to head. I'm going to get to that from four months ago. Yeah, I'm going to get to that in a second because that was in August. And the last time I looked, it's Not August, it's December. I'm going to get to that. But I'm going to first start out and take about two or three minutes here to say these things. The villain in the piece for Notre Dame is Virginia. It's Virginia. You have to understand this. Had Virginia beaten Duke, Virginia would have gotten into the playoffs as a conference champion. Miami would not be in because the ACC would be represented by one team. That would be it. That's enough. But because Virginia lost to Duke, a team they had beaten at Duke 34, 17 a few weeks ago, Virginia couldn't get in. They're not putting Duke in. Duke has five losses. Nobody in the world thinks that Duke is going to get in, including Duke. Now, God bless, they have the ACC championship. That's fine. So what happened was, in my mind, those people who sit at the committee, they're all athletic directors. They know athletic directors all over the country. They're partial to athletic directors. They're pals with the athletic directors in the acc. They know what a big conference the ACC is. And it's at hard times now because Florida State and Clemson had bad years. Miami had a good year. Miami is deserving of being the tournament. I'm not saying they're not, but those ads put Miami in and they put them in over Notre Dame because they're pals with them and they didn't want the ACC to be embarrassed by having no teams. Again, this goes back to Virginia, okay? Now you could say, well, they deserve to be in on a head to head over. Over Notre Dame, okay? That was in August. It was at Miami. Miami won by three points. This is not a huge victory. This is not Georgia beating Alabama on Saturday by 10,000 points. Not that. Since then. Since those two losses that Notre Dame had. First two games of the year to Miami and to Texas A and M, both of whom I point out are in this tournament. They're among the best 12 teams in the country. Those are the good losses, quality losses since then. Notre Dame won 10 in a row. Miami didn't. Miami lost two games. Miami lost. The two teams that were not ranked are not ranked. So Miami, Miami's losses are significantly worse than Notre Dame. And it's four months later. It's September, October, November, December. There has to be some nuance and head to head. If it was two weeks ago, okay, but it was four months ago. Notre Dame got hosed. And you could say Alabama shouldn't be in, not after that performance against Georgia. But, and I accept this.
The committee doesn't want to punish teams for actually getting into a college conference championship game and losing because Ole Miss didn't have to play A and M didn't have to play. Oklahoma didn't have to play and didn't have to play Georgia. So Alabama's terrible defeat. And it's terrible. They got minus three yards rushing. They stunk. It's awful. But that committee did not want to punish them. And that's why that committee jumped them over Notre Dame on the last ranking prior to this one. So that you would see their inclination was to keep Alabama no matter what. And it isn't no matter what because Alabama was that bad. So Notre Dame totally got hosed in this because had Virginia won, they're in. James Madison isn't. And there's room for another team. There's room at the inn. So you want to get angry at somebody, get angry at Virginia, get angry at the who's, because is there anything here? Now, Wilbourne will have an entirely different point of view.
C
No. But as you go layers and layers into this and you think about the powers of the ad, you don't want to hurt teams for not making it to the conference championship. You think about the independence of Notre Dame and hurting them for not being eligible for the conference championship. And then if you're friends with ads, you think about that nice $4 million pay you get for making it into that field and what gets shared around the table of the conference. So if you're independent and you get to keep that entire pile of cash.
A
This is the dirty little secret. They don't like Notre Dame because they're not in a conference.
C
Yeah.
A
Because they have their own television contract and are much richer than everyone else. So they want to screw Notre Dame because they want Notre Dame to go into the acc. Okay? So that's, that's a bottom line agenda, not a top line agenda. Notre Dame now says they're not going to play in a bowl game. Okay. You know, bowl games don't mean anything.
D
Not anymore.
A
They, they are useless. The bowl games are all useless. So it's. They don't have to. But they got no, I, I feel not.
C
So if you were NBC, others do not. Will, you're NBC and you have that big contract with Notre Dame. Even if you're not going to be televising a Notre Dame bowl game, would you like your product on any TV platform just to try and help bump it for the following year to keep its position?
A
You would. But you know, you'll have to talk to Notre Dame about that privately. Now. Have that conversation. The other point is the college football playoffs. They're big. Notre Dame's the biggest draw in the country. You don't have Notre Dame. You know, Miami's not the biggest draw in the country. Miami's okay. They're not Notre Dame. So now you. But it's not, it's not really going to matter except Notre Dame would give you plus eyeballs.
C
Yeah, let's get some alternate programming, you know.
A
Yeah, put Notre Dame on. Having a golf tournament, have their players to show Rudy, you know. So anyway. Yeah, something like that. All right, that's it. I just wanted to babble for a while. Yes, we will come back with Michael Wilbon. I'm Tony Kornheiser.

This is the Dan Ruffalo Trio and we have this note from Rob Schofield in Raleigh, North Carolina. Last year, when I wrote to tell you about my fun encounter with your old friend, the great sports journalist and Duke hater Curry Kirkpatrick, I mentioned that I hope to soon be sharing some music for my talented son in law, the amazing Los Angeles based composer, pianist Dan Ruffalo. So here it is. I may be prejudiced, but I believe that in a world with taste, Dan would already be touring the globe and filling sports arenas with fans clamoring to be entranced by his artistry. And who knows, it may still happen. But for now he's dividing his busy schedule between racking up numbers on various streaming platforms and composing original music for movies and tv. The most recently recording an EP called Color Collision as part of an awesome jazz trio with the bassist Marty Kenny, drummer Philippe Lem. Anyway, I'm sure listeners will enjoy the attached recent recordings. It's very, very nice. This is called Arkhamis Cove, the Dan Ruffalo Trio. They play in Michael Wilbon. Wilbon and I were on the phone a million times over the weekend and he knows my thoughts on Notre Dame getting hosed and his thoughts are different than mine. And I will start with that. Your thoughts on Miami in and Notre Dame out.
E
So mine is very simple. It takes like six seconds.
It's as simple and as basic as it gets in sports. I beat you, I'm in, you're out. Miami won a head to head matchup. There are only 12 of these now. Like there's 60 of them and they play four times or like 81 times or in major league baseball when they used to play 18 times. No, no. College football or football in general. You play twice in the NFL because your division. But even if you play once in a conference, that's it. If I beat you, I'm in, you're out. Don't want to hear anything else. I don't want to. I don't, I don't have special dispensation for Notre Dame. Notre Dame doesn't get any sort of extra consideration from me because it's Notre Dame and the TV numbers might be high. I don't care about that stuff and I don't care if it was Miami, the reverse if Notre Dame had defeated Miami head to head, then I'm in, you're out.
A
So let Me, the pushback that I have. The pushback that I have is at Miami, three point game. More importantly, most importantly to me, August, a game in August, it's now December. So you're saying that as far, if the season were to go all the way to June, from August, that first game, you would say that's it. That's the qualifier, Miami, not Notre Dame. And I would go the other way. I would. Yeah, I would.
E
It goes. It's 12 games. It's not August. It's 12 games. And so August is fine. It's 12 games. I mean, so what does it have to be? It has to be a sample of four games. You have to have beaten them day before yesterday. I know. I just find that people want to make excuses for Notre Dame. They want. If it was the other way around. It was the other way around, people wouldn't say, boo, it's Notre Dame. And there's a cadre of people who want to see Notre Dame. I'm not one of them.
A
This doesn't happen. We are. We are. We disagree on Notre Dame versus Miami, but what we agree upon is Virginia is the villain of the piece for Notre Dame. Right, Virginia. Right.
E
I mean. I mean, they had two losses that. I shouldn't frame it this way, Tom, because these are kids playing, even though they're like. Some of them are professionals because they're getting paychecks now, but they had two losses. The loss Saturday to Duke.
A
Terrible.
E
A team they've already beaten decisively recently, and that's bad enough. And they lost awake at home in a primetime game. And those. You know, I hate to frame it this way, but these losses now cost your school potentially tens of millions of dollars.
A
Oh, yeah. Oh, sure.
E
Oh, sure, they do. I mean, they're consequential. And, you know, you know, I root for Duke, someone I related to and live with. Who is it? Who's. I mean, for Virginia.
A
Yeah. You root for the who's. You root for the who's.
E
The who's.
A
Yeah.
E
And to see the who's lose that game.
A
Awful.
E
The way they did, the way they lost was awful. And the loss to Wake was similar. These were painful losses. And that changes the national narrative because the acc, and I know one thing you and I do agree on, the committee didn't want to have the ACC not represented.
A
100%. 100%.
E
And so you do have a feeling, whether you articulated or not officially on the record, you put Miami in.
A
That's exactly what they did. They moved them up. You know, they. They were cowardly about ranking Notre Dame ahead of them week after week after week after week. And then they. They moved them up.
E
Now, including last week, Galloway, who went on the offensive and said, what do you. Wait a minute. You didn't do this on Tuesday and now you do it on Saturday. By the way, I don't disagree with that. But let me. Let me just mention one last thing. A footnote here. Notre Dame's. No innocent knowledge. Notre dame takes the ACC's money. Notre Dame plays an ACC schedule. They want to be half in, but only half in. To hell with Notre Dame.
A
Okay, I knew you would say that. That's fine. Now, these are not. These are not the best 12 teams in the country. Because when you have Tulane and James Madison and it's not the best 12 teams in the country, you are inclusive mostly on these tournaments. You always say you want to have these kinds of schools. I am not. I am one of those people who say, no, no, no. If this is going to be a championship tournament, I want the best teams. I want the 12 best teams. You don't care about that. You want. You're good with James Madison and. Too late.
E
College football has already ruined itself to the point that regions of the country are now excluded. And no, I'm not interested in the tournament. That only includes the conference. I belong to the Big Ten and the sec, which is. There'd be some justification. You'd have a couple of Big 12 schools. No, I'm not interested in that. Not interested.
A
Okay.
E
College football, which has been a great product for 100 years and didn't even have a tournament, wouldn't even have a playoff for decades, said no, turned up its nose and had a great percentage of this country defending that exclusivity and garbage has now ruined itself. Where it says to a region of the country, we don't really want you, we'll include two or three of your schools in something that's 3,000 miles away. No. College football, Tony, is poison.
A
Yeah, I like it.
E
The running.
A
I've come to like it.
E
Poisonous.
A
I've come to like it. I didn't grow up with it.
E
Came to it late.
A
Yeah, I didn't grow up with it.
E
Those of us who follow it all the time, all of our lives, I won't disagree. This is not new. It's not cute. It's not fun. It's not appealing. It's garbage.
A
Let's get to another thing. Do you think Alabama deserves. Deserves to be in the tournament?
E
Probably not.
Based on. And Tony, I'm basing this on something that people aren't going to even care about based on resources too. Alabama has more resources than James Madison.
A
Sure.
E
Those schools that I know you want in, they're scared of James Madison.
A
Well, I don't think they wanted to.
E
Include those schools in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
A
Apples and oranges. Apples and oranges. Basketball.
E
No, not to me.
A
Apples and oranges.
E
Not to me.
A
James Madison I don't think could beat Miami. I don't think could beat Alabama. I don't think could be.
E
They can't beat them now.
A
That's right.
E
If they schedule them and they become familiar, they can beat them.
A
I can't beat them.
E
With the NCAA men's basketball tournament proved.
A
Well, but that's what it did. And we're going the other way in the basketball tournament where now the powerful schools are winning a much higher percentage of games of the non powerful schools because of the money and because of the transfer portal. Yeah, yeah, I agree. Do you think this is so speculative? We both will agree on this. If Notre Dame had actually joined the acc, which is financially stupid for them, it's stupid. They make so much money. But if they had been in the acc, they'd be in the tournament. They'd be, they'd be the ACC team.
E
They'D be in probably. But you know what, Tony? I believe in on the field and if your resources are even relatively equal, which you do have Miami and North Carolina and you know, you do have Clemson. What is Clemson?
You do have some ACC schools with equal, with reasonably close resources. Then prove it on the field. I don't want to hear it.
A
All right, let me get, I just. Let me get to the Bears.
E
I want to hear, I want to hear people say, here's the result from on the field.
A
Let me get to the Bears because you and I are going to disagree on this for the rest of time, but let's get to the Bears. Bears against Green Bay. Bears lose the game.
Seem to me they acquitted themselves pretty well. It seems to me there's a playoff team. But I watched this. What, what kind of clock management was that at the end of the game? What were they doing? Why are they leaving those timeouts?
E
You don't want them. You want to score on the play they scored on and go for two and win the game and leave them with no time? None.
A
Well, that was their only. That was the only time they went to the end zone though.
E
But that wasn't. I didn't want them to go to the end zone then.
A
Really okay.
E
No, I wanted them to get the fourth down, convert and get first down and spin one play. Run the damn football. Run it in. You've run on them. You have worn them out. You are, you are defeated. You have punched Green Bay in the mouth. When you went in on the two point conversion with your rookie running back, you said to everybody, going back to Vince Lombardi, up yours. Take this. And they did it. So do it again. Now, I watched Ben Johnson afterward. I know there's no reason for you to watch. People who care about the result intimately watched it. Ben Johnson explained. We had three people trying to score. We rolled. Caleb left. We've seen him score on that 10 times this year. We got a running back underneath. He got knocked off the route. And we got Cole commit at 6, 6 in the end zone. Who gets in back of the defense. And if you look at things that you would not look at that I have Cole commits open early by himself in the end zone for about 3 seconds, 4 seconds. Caleb didn't do it. He didn't commit to the throw quickly enough. You want one play to the end zone and you want to go for two. What you're going to do and you're going to beat Green Bay. It's perfect clock management because you know you can't stop them. You just saw during the two earlier possessions, yeah, Green Bay, we can't stop them.
A
So you only, you are perfectly. Not only are you content, you advocate for only one try into the end zone. I just want to make sure I have this right.
E
Well, you could, you, you could have two. You got to get the first down.
A
You got.
E
Well, it wasn't about the trying. It was about the, it was about the okay time. So it wasn't about the number of tries.
A
So here is the other question then. Are you encouraged or discouraged by this game?
E
Encouraged.
A
You should be encouraged.
E
Playoff team out.
A
Yeah, it's a playoff. You're a playoff team. You're a real life team.
E
It was at Green Bay and they won by a play.
A
Yeah. Yeah.
E
You take that.
A
Okay. Yeah. Okay. That's what I figured. I figured that you would be, you would be encouraged by that because there's no, there's no, there's no, it should be no doubt in your mind now that they are a big boy team. There's no doubt. Yeah.
E
And they, they, they. We play again in 13 days.
A
Oh, yeah.
E
We play again in 13 days in Chicago. I don't know that there is a home field advantage for those two.
I don't know. I Don't know that there is a home field.
A
Okay.
E
There might not be.
A
Okay.
E
You know what I mean?
A
Yeah.
E
I mean, it's. There's no weather advantage. There's no unfamiliarity. There's, you know, they. You know, so maybe.
I think yesterday is what we got. I think Green Bay may be playing with house money in two weeks, but maybe not because Green Bay plays in Denver Sunday.
A
Right. Right. So they could fall behind you in the standings. One last mention.
E
Cleveland.
A
One last. Kansas City's done. They're done this year. It's over.
E
Yeah. Yeah, they are. They're done. And Tony is not just because.
Of what the schedule says. They're just done.
A
Yeah.
E
I mean, Kelsey can't play at that level anymore.
A
No, they're. That drop.
E
He's caught the ball, dropped it into somebody else's hands.
A
So many drops. So many drops yesterday. And maybe it was weather related.
E
Rice is overrated. You know, people have Rice. Rice is not. This is not. His first name. Is not Jerry.
A
Right.
E
Okay.
A
That's right.
E
You know, so he's. You know, he's a nice player. Not turn him into the real Rice. Yeah. They're done. And they have to retool the way. The way New England did around Tom Brady. They have to re. They have to reset. And by the way, we don't know that they will. They will successfully reset. Andy Reid is my age. He's 67. He certainly could coach more years. He may be interested in that, but he may not be.
A
He may not be.
E
You know, he. He may go the way of other coaches we've seen who were even younger, like Bill Cower and say, you know what? I've had enough of this. I don't know that that will happen. But the Chiefs, Tony, they're done because they're not good enough. It's okay. You don't get to stay good enough forever. The things that the draft works against.
A
You, as does your schedule. Your schedule works against you.
E
The league makes it work against you.
A
The schedule that Philadelphia and Kansas City compared to the schedule that Denver and New England have. Come on.
C
Come on.
E
It's radically. And so we've seen the last of this chief's situation.
A
I give him one more year. I give him one more year.
E
But I don't know. Okay, Tony, because if. Here's the thing. If they're like. If they're proactive, like great franchises, clubs that we've seen in other sports, whether it's the Red Sox, the Yankees come to mind quickly. You. Not only are you too late to do it one year early. It's too late. So you've got to go in like, like next year. They're not going to be any good either.
A
Well, the difference, you can't compare them to baseball because the baseball has no salary cap.
E
Yeah, but you. Yeah, but, but okay. Baseball has no salary cap. But baseball is not a sport where you see people flip it in one year.
A
Football is football every year. Every year there's somebody like, like New England this year. Every year you can flip it.
E
And Kansas City could. Yeah, I just think it's going to take a couple of drafts.
A
Yeah.
E
If they have all their draft capital. I'm not sure what this situation is.
A
All righty. I'll see you later. I'll see you later. Michael Wilbon, boys and girls, we will take a break. Steve Sands will join us. There was a golf tournament this past weekend. Maybe you don't know about that. It was the Hero World Classic. It was in the Bahamas, the Tiger woods production. Sands was there, right?
C
Yeah. On the call.
A
He was there. So we're going to talk to him. I'm Tony Kornheiser.

C
Yes. What does the fox. A TK fox. Go check out johnnyo.com for all of your holiday shopping needs. Beautiful colors, beautiful offerings, and as always, got the best dressed kids in town. You do.
A
You have the best dressed kids. Your three kids are completely out of your.
C
The power of summer birthdays. You just hand me down everything to the next.
A
Why don't you? The next time they have a catalog, you should pitch your kids to be in it.
C
I'm hoping they would Ask.
A
You know, that would be just great. That'd be great. All right, so we are supposed to right now go to Steve Sands. Steve Sands was on the call of the Hero Classic. It was an invite only tournament that Tiger woods has done for years.
C
Tiger tournament.
A
Tiger makes the invitations here and there's 20 people and they're 20 great players.
C
Yeah, it's eligible to the top 20 players. It's a non PGA Tour event, but it is affiliated with the PGA Tour. So I believe for the last 15 years or so you are eligible to get world ranking points. So if you are able to qualify, it's a way to try and buffer your upcoming year just because its strength of field makes it a lot more points are eligible.
A
Hideki Matsuyama won it. Won it in a playoff. Was it with Straka?
C
I think it was with Alex Norton.
A
Alex Nor. Okay. It's a, It's a great field. It's. It, It's a great field. I have said this before. I always assumed that the Hero World Classic was something about heroes, was about military people or something like that. Heroes or first responders. It's a motorcycle. Yeah. Really? I, I found this out a few years ago that Hero is in fact a motorcycle. And I just started to laugh because I thought it was something different. In any case, it's. I watched three different days. One of the things I was going to ask Sands is how many people do you think watched yesterday opposite the NFL? Tough, because I think you could count them on two hands.
C
Well, they used, they used to call this time of year the silly season. And they brought back the Skins Game, which is, you know, the day after Thanksgiving, which I missed. And that was this year to lead up to the Friday afternoon game on Amazon. It was sort of a hit or miss broadcast. But this is the, you know, the, the in between event before you get to the PNC parent child, which is going to be in a couple weeks.
A
And Tiger usually plays in that.
C
Usually we've, we've had another surgery, so he's not going to be playing that.
A
Right. So.
C
But what was interesting is this was something that you'd watched, you know, during the day.
E
It looked great.
C
And then you had this opposite field event with the, one of the more important golf tournaments in the world in the Australian Open, which is at Royal Melbourne. And that they've moved it around. And this is probably one of the most important Dr. McKenzie designs in the world. You have the sand belt, which is famous for having these jagged edges of bunkers cutting into the sides. Of greens. It's a. It's got some of the firmest turf. So you're seeing these great shots where balls that look like they're heading towards the safe part of the green end up just trickling into a bunker. You had Rory McIlroy talking about the course down the street might actually be better than one of these top 20 courses in the world. So that had a similarly strong field. Cam Smith ended up losing it after blowing the tournament right with a three putt. And he's known for his putting. You had Rasmus, Neargaard, Peterson, who ended up winning, but just sort of a cool way to sort of have golf on opposite times of the day and a glimpse as to what the future should like as you try and come to some grounds on a world tour where players are able to pick and choose, saying it's important to go to a place like Australia and play at this very meaningful golf course. And how can we try and come to some tour that brings these players together?
A
Speaking of knocking courses, Wyndham Clark, who I don't think should be in the business of saying anything bad about anything, protect the lockers. Considering he broke all the lockers at Oakmont, he said that the course they were playing on wasn't all that good, wasn't in ship shape, and that's okay.
C
So here's the tough part is you have very grainy lies when you have these elevated greens and you're trying to pitch off of these, where the greens are repelling golf balls, they're running 20, 30 yards down. That's one of the hardest shots to. Because you have to be very specific about ball first contact. And that's why you see a lot of the best players. They look sort of foolish as the ball's coming back to their feet. Like you might see playing in a casual round over the weekend. But you never would say, understand your position. There's a dip like Scotty Shuffler. There's a diplomatic way to say, like, well, it's very difficult to pitch off of these. Wink, wink. We can all see what the turf is doing at impact. But Wyndham Clark had another moment where he hit it what looked to be in the water. He's in the mud. And I think it was Sands on the call talking about, can he make. What do you call when you make a birdie from the water? I think he was calling it like a pondy or a froggy, something like that. But he ended up making the birdie putt.
A
So the question that I would have had for Steve, beyond. Why do you schedule this opposite the NFL? You can't schedule opposite the NFL. Golf knows that. And they get out before the NFL starts. But my other question was, one of the players in there is Jordan Spieth. Jordan Spieth is not an inconsequential player. No, he's had. He's won three majors or four majors.
C
And he's just missing the pga.
A
And he. He. He can't play anymore. It seems.
C
He did swing changes a couple years ago. Never try and change the DNA of your golf swing.
A
So that's. Yeah. I mean, he looks like he's in Ricky Fowler land. Ricky Fowler. And Ricky Fowler was never as good as Jordan Spieth, but he was a very good player. And then suddenly he wasn't a very good player.
C
And Rickie Fowler moved to his way back into that top.
A
Now he's back. Yeah, now he's back.
C
Not necessarily challenging for mayor majors, but a competitive, you know, qualifying for everything on regular tour events.
A
So Sands left late last night and said he was going to be really tired. And so we give him a pass. We give Steve Sands a pass all the time. We do.
D
We love.
A
That's what we do.
C
And you could ask if he had a separate monitor to watch the football.
A
Yeah. Was he in while he was in the booth?
D
Well, he always likes to test, you know, if something great happens with one of the Washington teams. I love sports. Yeah, we're not getting those texts right.
A
Well, 31. Nothing is one.
C
It's got the caps.
A
So we'll. I'm sure that we'll talk to Steve later today, and I'm sure that we will.
D
Oh, we'll get a text second we wrap. Oh, my gosh.
A
All right. It's okay. It's okay. He is our dear friend. It's okay. So we will take a break and we will do email and jingle when we return. I am Tony Kornheiser.

And this is from Jeff Farmer in Louisville. Now I'm gonna read it. I teach in an elementary school a few blocks from Churchill Downs. The beauty and pageantry of the Kentucky Derby are not really indicative of the neighborhood. 85% of our students are deemed economically disadvantaged by the state, meaning they qualify for free or reduced lunch. I'm lucky to be a member, along with the esteemed Pat 40 of Lakeside Swim Club, an absolute gem of a former limestone quarry that was turned into a swimming hole in the 1920s. For years I had a lecheeserie ready to go at a moment's notice, for when I finally came across him a few summers back, he and his wife were exiting as I was entering and I nearly fell over myself shouting a hearty lecheserie. He and his wife were great sports and chuckle kindly. Fast forward a month or so later and Pat and I are randomly both about to hop in to swim some laps next to each other. I pitch him on coming to speak at Career Day at my school and without a second of hesitation he accepts. Today Mr. Forty came presented to all three of our utterly captivated fourth grade classes. He told him stories of sports stars and championships and Brooks silver medal in Tokyo. When a student asked on a scale of 1 to 10, what would you rate your job in terms of fun? He replied with an unequivocal tent. He convinced his co host to record their podcast earlier than normal this morning so he could arrive on time to our career day. And in spite of telling our students 100 times that he doesn't cover much soccer, our fairly global student body asked 101 times which famous soccer player has he met? This grandpa is the connective tissue we all love and I hope you are proud of attacks. Please find a picture of Mr. Forty's visit for the News Channel 8 viewers. I know we have some official educators among the littles already, but it's not already taken. Could I be the official elementary school Spanish teacher? The TK Show Yes. Thank you to Jeff Farmer for that. That's love.
C
Love it.
A
Very great. From Ben Carton. Not Ben Cardin, but Ben Carton, the other one. I am certainly no expert, but what is a supermoon? I'm certainly no expert, but I believe a supermoon is when Clark Kent moon takes off its glasses, goes into a phone booth and comes out with an S on the front of itself, then helps any and all other moons that are in distress. But I could be wrong. Again, I'm no expert. Lee Stevens Messina, New York in upstate New York, I went outside last evening to enjoy the flight full moon. Unfortunately, my viewing pleasure was limited to just 10 seconds as the 4 degree temperature and minus 5 wind chill drove me back inside the friendly confines of my house. Mother Nature gives with one hand and takes away with the other. It was beautiful if you got to see it, really on Thursday and Friday. And then the clouds rolled in here anyway. Dan Moore Winnipeg, Manitoba In Canada, I cannot exactly define what the supermoon is, but I know it played a pivotal point in one of the greatest movies of all time. When Fredo mentioned to Senator Geary that it was Johnny Ola who had told him about the supermoon, Michael was confronted with the reality that it was his own brother who had betrayed the family and their affairs with Hyman Roth. So when from Tom Walters in Safety Harbor, Florida Apparently Spotify wrapped standings is the new game. I am a top 1% listener over 10,000 minutes. Does that mean I can tell the other 99% to eat it? See picture and there's a top podcast. Yeah, I don't can you explain this?
C
I explained it to you last week. I'll show it to you on my on my own Spotify?
A
I just don't understand. Jonathan Shantz, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Formerly of Lindenhurst, New York. Spotify rap. That's just fancy music talk for what Wilbond calls analytics garbage or a bunch of hocus pocus junk. You don't tell me how many times I listened to Sabrina Carpenter last year. I know how often it was. You know how I know? Because I was the one listening. From Michael if you want to watch more in Searcy, Arkansas, I have an update on Division 2 football which I'm surprised hasn't come from Greg Garcia. In the quarterfinals Frostburg State. Wow. They were in it fought valiantly against Kutztown University, the alma mater of Andre Reed, before falling short after a great season. The semifinals, Kutztown will play my hometown Harding University, which just bested the all time any level of college football record for rushing yards of the season, standing at 6,308 yards for the season through 14 games with up to two more games to play. The other semifinal features last year's national champion, Ferris State, the number one seed. The main reason you may have heard of them is that their quarterback during their championship run last year, Trinidad Chambliss, transferred to Ole Miss where he and Lane Kiffin led the team to the College Football Playoff. From Steve in Fairfield, just wanted to say thank you for promoting the Omaha Steak packages. It made it easier to shop for my brother and sister in law this year. Also, on a side note, when I filled out the review, I did ask him to send you a care package. So if you get another one, that was me. So eat it and have a lovely holiday. From Steve the Sycophant the personal connections forged by the TK podcast continue to amaze. Saturday, at the Herndon Regional Wind Ensemble concert you so nicely mentioned, a fellow trumpeter wanted me to meet a friend of his. The friend asked if leches rang a bell. I of course said yes. And I learned I was talking to Biff from Gaithersburg, who contributes jingles. Yes, yes. Which you have played. To open your email segment, including for Christmas and New Year's, Biff insisted on taking a selfie of us, which I found highly flattering. Later, later, it occurred to me, thanks to your podcast and only your podcast, I'm infinitesimally famous. I promise to use my fame wisely. From Josh Ridgeway in Richmond, Virginia, I can't help but find it a bit suspicious that the Sands family is getting out of the liquor business right after a wine heist of the century. Plus, who better to move some questionable bottles under the table? You may want to check some of those free bottles for the new labels. Mr. T.O. from Tom Lambert in Las Vegas. Dear Captain, my wife purchased a new Subaru six months ago, a very practical buy for her I'm now sitting in the dealership service waiting area as the car undergoes its first servicing. Can you imagine such a place? A waiting room filled with an abundance of people who love their children more than you do yours. That's it. Merry Christmas. Happy hanukkah, Tom. Matt McDevitt. I work for a predominantly Midwestern sporting goods company called Shields. I saw a hat that we sell in my store that I thought you enjoy, you would enjoy if you were looking to upgrade your golf wardrobe over the winter for next year. I'm a longtime listener of the show and even longer watch of pti. Coming home from school to watch PTI with my dad before he would go to work when he was on overnights will always be a memorable part of my childhood. Thank you for the many years of entertainment. Wishing you your family and the show. Happy holiday season. The hat has a big logo on the front with the words play bad fast, which is what I do.
Let's see. Scott Slayton or Slattin? Scott Slatten. I've been really enjoying the latest Ken Burns documentary, American Rebel Revolution. Ken and I are not pals. We're not pals. But Ken got George Washington's voice terribly wrong. He obviously doesn't listen to the show. Shout out, Ian.
C
Do it.

And yeah, Pete Effinger. Now I've got a cold. Thanks a lot, Lock. And for.
Richard Rich. Monica in Durham, you'll be happy to know that your favorite health insurance company is changing its name to Health Spring due to a takeover by HCSC Health Care Service Corporation. What are the chances they'll treat you any differently? 00 from Brian Granger in Charlotte, North Carolina. 9 and 20 is still within reach for the Wizards, but there's work to be done. Maybe they can sign John Wall. What are they now? I think two and 20.
D
I think three and 19.
A
Yeah. And one more. Jake Carnazzo, director of reimbursement at Bon Secours Mercy Health in. Where's this? In Cincinnati. Hi, Michael. I was wondering if you knew that Ingleside has three star Michelin rated turkey club sandwich available for all residents asking for a friend. Sincerely, Jake not from State Farm in Louisville. The good fries.

Host: Tony Kornheiser
Main Guest: Michael Wilbon
Produced by: This Show Stinks Productions, LLC
This episode of The Tony Kornheiser Show focuses on the fallout from the college football playoff selection process, with a particular emphasis on Notre Dame’s exclusion and debates over the merits of Miami’s inclusion. The conversation touches on broader college football issues such as conference favoritism, the value (or lack thereof) of bowl games, and the struggle of traditional powerhouses in the NFL. Tony and regular guest Michael Wilbon engage in lively disagreement about the playoff system, the impacts on Notre Dame, and some NFL and golf news.
"I hand them my phone and they say, 'Go to your wallet.' I said, 'I don't know what my wallet is.' I waited 10 minutes at customer service. There's nobody there."
"Notre Dame got hosed. If Virginia had won, they're in. Get angry at Virginia—get angry at the Hoos!"
"It's as basic as it gets in sports. I beat you, I'm in, you're out. Miami won a head to head matchup. I don't want to hear anything else."
"It's 12 games. It's not August. It's 12 games. People want to make excuses for Notre Dame."
"Andy Reid is my age, he's 67. He may be interested in [coaching more], but he may not be. The Chiefs, they're done because they're not good enough. It's okay. You don't get to stay good enough forever."
Tony Kornheiser (09:34):
"Notre Dame got hosed. If Virginia had won, they're in. Get angry at Virginia—get angry at the Hoos!"
Michael Wilbon (16:48):
"It's as basic as it gets in sports. I beat you, I'm in, you're out... Miami won a head-to-head matchup. I don't want to hear anything else."
Tony Kornheiser (12:18):
"This is the dirty little secret. They don't like Notre Dame because they're not in a conference."
Wilbon (22:00):
"College football has already ruined itself... College football, Tony, is poison."
Wilbon (29:02):
"Andy Reid is my age, he's 67... The Chiefs, they're done because they're not good enough. It's okay. You don't get to stay good enough forever."
Tony’s supermarket self-checkout rant (02:20):
"None of these stores want you to check out with a real person. They want you to check out on the—yeah, the self-checkout. Yeah. No. So I hand them the phone, I say, I don't know how to use this..."
Playoff debate intensity between Tony and Wilbon, showing a classic, friendly, sharp disagreement.
Wilbon’s bluntness on Notre Dame:
"To hell with Notre Dame." (21:11)
NFL acceptance of change:
"You don't get to stay good enough forever." (Wilbon, 29:02)
Conversational, witty, sometimes self-deprecating, and always direct—true to the spirit of Tony Kornheiser’s long-running show. Tony intersperses rants and old-school media grumpiness with deeply informed sports takes, while Wilbon provides punchy, often contrarian views. The episode features breezy interludes about daily life and family, grounded by serious — at times passionate — commentary on the state of sports.
"Hoos Lose" offers classic Tony Kornheiser: part stand-up, part sports salon, part old friends’ bickering. Sports fans will find deep dives on college football playoff controversies and NFL narratives, while regular listeners will appreciate the show’s blend of warmth, gripes, and the always-entertaining Tony–Wilbon repartee.
