Hey, it's Tony. On today's show, we'll talk to Michael Wilbon about the passing of legendary coach Louis Carnesecca. We'll also talk to Pat40 about another wild weekend in college football that included him getting pepper sprayed at the end of the Ohio State Michigan game. But first, commerce.

Previously on the Tony Kornheiser Show.
Tony Kornheiser
So we bring in.
Chuck Todd
You know, if we just gave you.
Tony Kornheiser
Chuck Todd, it would be great, but we give you a monkey.
Chuck Todd
No, we give you Gary Braun. And because it's Thanksgiving and because Gary and Kim used to babysit my children and their children are now grown or at that age. Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
How is everybody? And where are the children?
Gary Braun
More importantly, how are you? You sounded a little raspy yesterday on.
Tony Kornheiser
The voice link today.
Chuck Todd
Yeah, it's worse.
Tony Kornheiser
It's worse. Shalom aleichem, my brother.
Michael Wilbon
The Tony Kornheiser show is on now.
Tony Kornheiser
So that was Wednesday. I'm not much better. And it's Monday. I still have this coughing problem. I've been taking Z Pak and cough suppressants and Robitussin. That brings you up to date on me. You can hear me. I'm no good. The dog. Her diarrhea is dissipating. She's had a couple of poops that are not quite normal. But are not total liquid. Lights went out in my house yesterday.
Michael Wilbon
Only a portion of the house.
Tony Kornheiser
Portion of the house lights went out. We're waiting on G, the electrician. And I have a very, very long story that I'm not going to tell today about why I quit playing golf on this particular day on Friday, in a shotgun at hole number eight. It's a long story and I'm not going to get to it today because I don't have a voice.
Michael Wilbon
At least you made it off the waitlist.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I don't have a. Yeah, I don't have a voice to do it. And it's probably good because Delmar doesn't want to hear this, so I just. I'll back away from all of it. And what else? I don't really have anything else to say.
Michael Wilbon
What's so great was when I saw Chessie with one of her dog walkers and I see him taking out his camera because I know there's been instructions.
Tony Kornheiser
Please take pictures of poops. Yeah, I gotta see what it looks like.
Pat Forde
It's an interesting Instagram feed because with.
Tony Kornheiser
Me, it wasn't that good. Oh, I forgot. Sean is helping us today.
Pat Forde
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Because our system crashed completely. So thank you, Sean.
Michael Wilbon
It's a reminder that if the electrician tells you to cycle on a couple of circuits, maybe you should just wait for him to arrive.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Yeah, maybe. I have a lot to say, but my voice isn't good enough to say all the stuff about the football that I want. But I will say this. Watching as much football as I did yesterday and over the entire weekend, all of a sudden, Bryce Young is suddenly good for Carolina. Yeah, he's suddenly good.
Pat Forde
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And all of a sudden, Justin Tucker is suddenly bad. He's a Hall of Fame kicker and he's suddenly bad. But this is all. Doesn't mean anything. The most important thing we can say is you're probably wondering why Nigel, a subject of the Crown, would be such a big Ohio State fan. But he is a big Ohio State fan. Why don't you just pick up the story of where you were over the weekend and how it feels?
Pat Forde
Well, first of all, let me just say I'm very sorry that your voice isn't fully back. I'd hope that you would be roaring like a lion and that. And that Chess.
Michael Wilbon
I thought as soon as he got the Z Pack, he would knock it out.
Pat Forde
Yeah. To say it's dissipating with Chessie, I would hope that would been banished by now. So. No, it's a tough, tough on the home front. Yes. I went to college at or university, as we would say, at uni at Denison, which is a half an hour away from Columbus. And my greatest friend in the world was born and raised in Ohio. And so proximity wise, that's why I became a big Ohio State fan. And it's always been a dream of mine and my friends to go to the game. And so this year we thought, well, this is a great year because Ohio State's fantastic. Michigan's not particularly good.
Tony Kornheiser
Michigan stinks. Right? They stink. They were an undefeated team that won the national championship last year. And everybody's gone.
Pat Forde
Everybody's gone.
Michael Wilbon
And you'd say you've been waiting years for this.
Pat Forde
Yeah, for pretty much, yeah. I'd say about 30.
Tony Kornheiser
To go to a game where you were guaranteed Ohio State would win.
Pat Forde
Well, we, yes, we thought it was very like. Although if you talked to us a couple of days before, we said we're hopeful but we're nervous. And then we got there and it was first of all, the experience when you get there was great. I drove out, I had, I had Thanksgiving on the Eastern Shore. Drove out Friday morning. It's about an eight hour drive to, to Ohio.
Michael Wilbon
Nothing like driving an hour in the opposite direction to start. Right.
Pat Forde
But it was, it was lovely out there. I mean, it was just beautiful. And then. So we took a brief tour of the university. Couldn't remember anything. Was like, I don't recognize that building. Did I actually go here? It was very disconcerting. And then the next morning, 8:00, we drove into Columbus. We were outside, I'd say for the vast majority of the day. It was brutally cold. I was wearing a pair of pajamas underneath my blue jeans. I had two pairs of gloves. I couldn't get enough shirts on.
Michael Wilbon
And what was your shoe situation?
Pat Forde
I was wearing these sneakers which I found are ventilated, so weren't particularly effective. We did have those heat packs, you know, the chemical packs.
Michael Wilbon
They only last like an hour.
Pat Forde
No, they last for like six hours. And they were blindingly hot. I mean, it was just wow. So we were sticking those in as many places we could.
Tony Kornheiser
Sure.
Pat Forde
And our seats were also two bad things about them. Now we specifically said they were outdoors.
Michael Wilbon
Yes, it really was.
Pat Forde
But it was all the way at the top, so there was no. And because we wanted a good view of the field.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, so you don't get taken.
Michael Wilbon
The crowd.
Pat Forde
Yeah, and. Yeah, yeah. And. And also the wind coming in. I mean, you were right at the top. You could see right next to the flags. And also we happened to be in the one section where there were Michigan people. So, you know, and they were loud and, you know, there weren't a lot of them, but they were loud. And you're like, okay, well give us time and, you know, hopefully we'll be able to shut them up. And they never did. And you just saw. It was like a slow motion car accident this whole game where you're like, well, they'll break out of it in the end of the first half. They had a great drive. And you said, well, that. Okay, they sort of shook it off. And by the way, the lines for the restrooms were the longest lines I've ever seen in my life. Just, okay, I'm not going to do that.
Michael Wilbon
And tailgating since the night before, probably. Yes.
Pat Forde
And it was too cold to drink beer, so I was a hot chocolate guy for the entire. The entire game.
Tony Kornheiser
Two 1.
Pat Forde
We left before the end because we knew what was going to happen.
Tony Kornheiser
You didn't see the.
Pat Forde
No.
Tony Kornheiser
You didn't see the winning field goal by Michigan?
Pat Forde
No, because. So we left right when Michigan got the ball back. It was about six or seven minutes left. I looked at my friend Digger and I said, diggy, what do you want to do? Do you want to stay? Do you want to go? And we knew that if we left right then it would save us about 2 hours process of getting down, getting to the car and driving because we're driving back to Washington right afterwards. So, no, we heard the winning kick on the radio.
Tony Kornheiser
How do you feel about Ryan Day?
Pat Forde
I feel that Ryan Day, I hope, I really hope that he rented in the Columbus area and he didn't buy because he's got to go. He's a terrific coach in a lot of ways, but I think he's one in four against Michigan now. Yeah, that's unacceptable. And especially this year, especially this year.
Tony Kornheiser
Ranked 2 in the country and Michigan doesn't have a ranking and you've brought.
Pat Forde
All these people and you spent all this money, the nil money. And also in big games in general, he generally comes up just a bit short or a lot short. And so you've got to have a guy that can meet the moment. And he does not seem to be that guy, despite his outstanding record, despite the fact that they'll probably still go to the playoffs, I would imagine. But he would have to win the whole thing. And even then there will be people like myself who would say, you've got to go. We all we care about is beating that team up north.
Tony Kornheiser
How would you rate the entire experience?
Pat Forde
It was fabulous.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Pat Forde
I mean, it really was.
Tony Kornheiser
It was the only thing that went bad. Was it the game?
Pat Forde
Yeah, it was the result. But.
Michael Wilbon
But this makes it more memorable in some ways.
Pat Forde
It does. No, I will never forget it. And we now, we vow that we're going to go back in two years. We won't go to Michigan to see the game. We'll go back in two years and.
Tony Kornheiser
But overall, colder in Michigan.
Pat Forde
Yes. And we'll hope for a bit more.
Michael Wilbon
You want to bring the flag and try and plant it in midfield?
Pat Forde
Oh, no, I don't want to get.
Tony Kornheiser
So you missed all of that.
Pat Forde
Missed all of that. And I.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, luckily Pat 40.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah.
Pat Forde
And I did see Pat's tweets and I was like, oh, my goodness. He was there and he got a whiff of the pepper spray. Just mortified that that went down because it's just an ugly exclamation point to an ugly day. But the whole experience.
Tony Kornheiser
But you wouldn't trade it.
Pat Forde
No, you don't. You don't understand. I'm always the away fan. Every stadium I go into, I'm in the minority. This is. I was around my people and it was just great to sort of as you. Everywhere you walk, you know there's a statue of Woody Hayes who was a graduate of Denison. So we're like, oh, look at that. You know, and it was just the fight song playing. Everywhere my colors.
Tony Kornheiser
Woody Hayes reminds me. Repeat the question you asked me earlier this morning with regards to Ohio State coach.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, didn't he punch a player?
Tony Kornheiser
You thought he punched a Michigan player. And I explained. No, we punched a Clemson player.
Pat Forde
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Charlie Bauman.
Pat Forde
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
He wanted to punch a Michigan player, but it never came up. But he punched a Clemson.
Pat Forde
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Woody.
Pat Forde
Didn't end well for Woody.
Tony Kornheiser
No.
Pat Forde
Great coach.
Tony Kornheiser
No, because you can't.
Pat Forde
You can't do that. No. I think he had two, you know, my favorite lines. You know, there's, you know, three things can happen when you pass a ball and two of them are bad. So he just loved to run it. But why didn't you go for, you know, why did you go for two against Michigan? Because I couldn't go for three, you know, so.
Tony Kornheiser
All right. Tough day. Yeah. But I'm glad you went.
Pat Forde
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
You had a really good time.
Pat Forde
Yeah, it really was. Really was.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. I'm glad you're not stuck with a terrible cough and bad cold and a dog who's diarrhea.
Michael Wilbon
Other than that, it was a good Thanksgiving Yeah.
Pat Forde
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.
Tony Kornheiser
Brutal. Well, the Thanksgiving itself is Michael cooked. Right.
Michael Wilbon
But we also secured two turkey dinners for one for mom and dad. The 8101 special.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I won't do that again. I won't do that again. But a lot of things. I had the Roberto donut dinner as well. Spread over. Oh, sure.
Michael Wilbon
I must say, we discussed the hammer. Big pumpkin pie fan. Did not see that coming. This had a lot of clove to it, but loved it.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't. I'm not a pumpkin pie guy. And. And the dinner came with. With a slice of pumpkin pie. Oh. So kids had it, which is fine. We had apple pie, which is great. Yeah.
Pat Forde
Apple pie.
Tony Kornheiser
All right. So we will have Wilbon when we return.
Pat Forde
That's right.
Tony Kornheiser
I'm Tony Kornheiser. You're listening to the Tony Kornheiser show.

Michael Wilbon

Pat Forde
I gave one to my mom and she loves it. Yeah, every.
Tony Kornheiser
It's really good. Just. Yeah.
Pat Forde

This is a band called Big Big Furnace. This is a song called Christmas without yout. Nigel Will Reed the missive attached to it.
Pat Forde
Dear Mr. Tony, as a fan of John Lennon's At Me Christmas War is over, I know you appreciate an holiday tune with a little more pathos. My friends band Big Big Furnace recently united after a decade plus hiatus and recorded several new songs including a heartfelt mournful song called Christmas without yout about getting through this time of the year after losing someone special. They Also have another terrific upbeat number played called Lost and Found. We'll play.
Tony Kornheiser
We'll get that later.
Pat Forde
Yeah, that's from Andy Schoener in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, Very nice. Plays in Michael Wilbon. Wilbon is fortunate that I don't get to talk much because I have no voice. But let me start with something near and dear to me, and I think near and dear to you as well, and that is the passing of Louis Carnesecca a few weeks shy of his 100th birthday. That, for both of us, conjures up a time when the Big east really was a great basketball conference and the players were indeed overshadowed by the coaches, right?
Sean
Yes. Yes. And even though the players, you know, a few of them became legendary because they were greatest professionals. Two of two of them on the one and only Dream Team, Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullen. Yes, Tony, they were Giants. And obviously, you know, with Louis Carnesecca being, you know, you know, about 5ft tall, people use the word giants. I'm using the word giant. I think I said to you yesterday, I might have told somebody else, I don't think that I ever met a nicer man than Louis Carnaceka in the whole sports world. This whole time I've been covering the industry, and it's been 45 years, had never met anyone as nice, certainly not nicer. And I know that Louis was a competitor, and there's the toughness to him. He had to be just his stature. But his manner was so cool. It was so engaging. It was the way he had about him, whether it was with players or referees or other coaches or the media. I'll just tell a real quick story. I was at St. John's maybe, you know, it was like right about now, doing a story on Chris Mullen. Before the big Georgetown St. John's game, the first of the three in 1985, I was doing a story on Chris Mullen. I went to Jamaica, Queens, to St. John's campus. And while I was there, it was great. I talked to Chris Mullen, I talked to Louie. I do this, I do that. Mark Jackson. It starts snowing, and it's one of those deals where it looked like Denver. It was snowing like, you know, like three inches an hour. And it's fairly early in the day. But I'm. I'm not going to make a flight that's going to get me out of LaGuardia. I'm going to get stuck in New York. I have no. I have no luggage. I have no clothing. I just went up to talk to Chris Mullen and come back on the shuttle. So it's snowing desperately. I call a taxi. How about a taxi coming to jamaica, queens, in 1985? You like? You like my odds on that one?
Tony Kornheiser
No.
Sean
So I'm waiting outside now for this taxi to come, and Louie, Coach Carnesecca, walks out. And the snow is falling on my head with Afro then. And he says, you know, what are you doing? What are you doing? I said, coach, I'm waiting for a taxi to go to LaGuardia. What? What? The taxi. You snowing. You see it snowing? I go, yes. I have no other way. I gotta get there. Louie says, hold on. Don't go anywhere. Hold on. And then within a minute or so, a car pulls around. And I don't remember whether Louie was driving or the late, great Catherine Quinn, who you, of course, knew, just like I did the sports information director at St. John's who was Louie's right hand then in the 80s, and I don't know which one was driving, but they drove me to the Delta shuttle. And by about two minutes, after about an hour and a half in a car in snow, I make the last shovel home to Washington, compliments of Coach Lou Carnoseca.
Tony Kornheiser
I can't begin to tell people, you know, how nice a person he was.
Sean
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
But just so in case you don't know, you're listening, and you don't really know, because we're going back 40 years. Who was coaching in the Big east at that time besides Louie? And Louie had the. Not the worst record, but Louie never won. He never won a national championship and never got to the final, even though his best team, with Chris Mullen and Walter Berry, was ranked number one during the season. And that is the season, of course, of the sweater. But besides Louie, you have John Thompson, who won a national title, Jim Boeheim, who won a national title, Roli Massimino, who won a national title, Jim Calhoun won a national title, Rick Pitino won a national title, and PJ Carlissimo got to the final. That's in the same conference in the same year.
Sean
And Loom got to the Final Four that year, but he lost, for. He lost for the third time to Georgetown. They beat Georgetown here at Capital Center, I think. You know, I can't remember anything, but I believe the final score was 66, 64 on an incredible Saturday afternoon. That game was on, you know, cbs, which is always important a thing at the time for that conference. And then Georgetown won the second regular season contest, won the Big east contest, and that's when I believe Coach Thompson had the sweater on.
Tony Kornheiser
Had the sweater and then sweater and.
Sean
Then won the third time in the final four to advance to play, of course, Il Faedas Villanova. Yeah, it was the most incredible time. But Lou Carnesecca, he and John Thompson in that sweater. I'm just gonna say this, Tony and I, you know, I now have been around for almost 50 years of college basketball. The last 50 as an adult. Almost nothing that I have ever attended in covering sports brought me greater joy. That was just as joyous as Big John opening his jacket that day.
Tony Kornheiser
I agree.
Sean
And having on the copy of Luke Harness a sweater. It's. There's nothing I have I saw before and certainly nothing I've seen since was as stunning. Do you remember the reaction you had when Big John opened his jacket and he had that.
Tony Kornheiser
Just the enormous grin on my face. And then John hugged Louie. And you need to understand this. John Thompson was 6 11. Louis Carnesecca was 5 5. John could have picked Louis up and tossed him into the air and he hugged him. And it was, you are correct 100%. It was a joyous moment. And I should say this about Louis, and this is why we loved him, because of what we did for a living. Louis always had time for sports writers. Always, always.
Sean
You know, the last time I saw him in person was in Madison Square Garden, you know, a few years ago. I don't think it was Tim, but it might have been. And, you know, by that time, you and I had you. Because you have this relationship with him over a much longer period of time. And I thank you for passing that relationship on to me because that is what happened, because I started going to all these games at the Garden in Louis every time I was there. How's Anthony? How's Anthony? How's Anthony doing?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Sean
Wait, wait. He can't leave his house. He can't come see the old coach. It was so great. But I'm in the Garden, whatever. A few years ago. I'm on that. That elevator, Tony, that freight elevator, you know, you would take in the back.
Tony Kornheiser
Yep.
Sean
And Lou Cardisec is on the elevator going up. And this is a game, you know, it's a Knicks game. And I saw him and he saw me. But I'm thinking, you know, I haven't seen Louie to speak to him in 25 years. He never. He doesn't know me that well like he knew you and Lupica and so many others in New York. But. But I looked. I sort of looked at him and I was gonna say hello, and I said, no, just. Just chill. Elevators crowded. So as he's gonna get off first before you get to the fifth floor. And you know what I'm talking about.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Sean
Car turns around and he has to reach up and he puts his hand. He gives me that little pat on the cheek and he says, you're not gonna say hello to the old coach? You can't speak to the old coach anymore. It's the greatest recognition I've ever had.
Tony Kornheiser
Just a wonderful.
Sean
You know, and so with such a. But, you know, he had those teams. I mean, Mark Jackson. I was counting on Mark Jackson posting something yesterday on Instagram that would make all of us cry. And he did, because Mark Jackson was on that team, you know. You know, Walter Berry and Chris Mullen were the stars.
Tony Kornheiser
They were the stars.
Sean
Yeah. But it's unforgettable time. It's. I. And I know that, you know, those guys were, as you mentioned, they were all rivals, but they built something that no one thought could be built.
Tony Kornheiser
And with the exception of Calhoun, they loved each other.
Sean
And they did.
Tony Kornheiser
They fought, except for Jim, and cursed.
Sean
And loved each other.
Tony Kornheiser
So there used to be this thing, the college basketball luncheon, when I was working at the New York Times. So this is over 50 years ago, college basketball luncheon. And I used to go to it, and it was often at Mama Leone's. And some of the coaches who were there were young men at the time like Mike Krzyzewski at Army and Jim Valvano at, wherever he was, some small school somewhere. And this was a real big deal to them to be around the heavyweights like Louie. And Louie's real name is Luigi. It's not Louis, it's Luigi, which is why Louis is, you know, called Louis all the time. It's Luigi. He played baseball. He wasn't even a basketball player. And everyone assumed that his choice in Italian food would be better than everybody else's because he's Luigi Carnesecca. Well, we used to have the luncheon at Mama Leone's. And Mama Leone's was a touristy Italian restaurant in New York City that often advertised if you went to a Broadway show, there'd always be an advertisement for Mama Leone's in the program, you know, because they figure you were pretty well healed if you went to a Broadway show. You could spend some money on lunch or dinner. And Louis used to always have the same thing for lunch, which told you what he thought about the food at Mama Leone's. Louis had scrambled eggs. Louis knew he Knew I'll get to a couple. Oh, I'll get to one other thing with you. Today is the 39th anniversary of the Monday night Bears Dolphins game, which I remember well and I know you remember well, that's. It was the highest rated Monday night game of all time. It had an audience share of 46% of televisions tuned in to. In anything. That's. I know the Bears lost. That's one of the greatest games I've ever seen and I wonder how you felt about it.
Sean
I hate the game. The Bears, for a franchise that has won, I don't know, eight championships in the NFL. Not Super Bowls, people championships. The league championship, which before 1967 was just the NFL championship, 14 has won more of those than anybody except the packers, who've won nine. The Bears have had such memorable losses. Oh my God. This year to add to that book. But that is the most painful loss, I think of any one game. Maybe surpassed by Bartman game. Maybe, maybe not.
Tony Kornheiser
I remember this. I remember being so excited to watch this game. You too, right?
Sean
Yeah, yeah, I was, I was excited, but I was, I was in despair because I still believe that that was the greatest game of all time. But it's hard to make the case when the Dolphins were perfect and we weren't. But let me just tell you this real quick story. So I am, you know, as you know, Tony, I am legitimate pals with a lot of guys from that team. We're about the same age, a lot of them. Richard dent and Jim McMahon and Otis Wilson and you know, less so pals with Mike Singletary and you know, guys on that team that la, Mike Richardson, you know, guys I've known, I've known now for 40 plus years. And the coolest story from that game, people don't even know the story really. And that is Mike Ditka. There were two that were struggled to control the team. Mike Ditka was a tight end, of course, and an offensive guy as tough as he was. People who don't know think Mike Ditka played defense. He didn't. He's a tight end. He's a Hall of Fame tight end. And Buddy Ryan, his coach, who he inherited, I'm pretty sure the defensive coordinator, the great Buddy Ryan. And on the night of that game, Buddy Ryan somehow has a safety attempting to cover, let's just say Nat Moore or Mark Duper, whoever the fastest guy with Dolphins was that night.
Tony Kornheiser
Clayton and Duper were the fastest.
Sean
Okay. And they had Nat Moore as well. So. But, but Buddy Ryan has a Safety or linebacker, maybe he has Wilbur Marshall, another guy that mentioned his friend, and he has Wilbur trying to cover him, and he's eating them alive. You know, Marino to Duper or Clayton or Nat Moore. And Dick is tired of this matchup. And he says to Buddy, who. Who made the decision to have that guy on Mark Duper. And Buddy says, of course I made the decision. And Dickinson says, I tell you what, if you don't get a cornerback on him right now, we can take it out back. In other words, they are now threatening each other to a fist fight outside the Orange bowl during what you're describing as maybe the greatest regular season game in the history of primetime television.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, great game.
Sean
We can take it out back.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, that's, of course, as you know.
Sean
Tony led to both of them being carried off by their own respective constituents on that team. Ditka by the offensive guys, Buddy Ryan by the defensive guys. The only time that happened through that time. But that game, I can laugh at it now, and I know it's a famous game, and I know they won the championship anyway, but I. It's the most painful loss of all, and it's 40 years ago.
Tony Kornheiser
I understand that. I do. We all watched a lot of college. We all watched a lot of pros. We'll just wrap it up very briefly by saying this. I don't want to hear about Baltimore in the super bowl anymore. I may want to hear about it in three weeks. I don't want to hear about it now. Not now.
Sean
Wow.
Tony Kornheiser
Just stop.
Sean
That was just, you know, I certainly had the Ravens winning that game, but I tell you, there's some teams. Listen, I don't want to hear about Cincinnati anymore.
Tony Kornheiser
No, it's over. They have failed their quarterback every game.
Sean
You know, they're defensive. Joe burrow strong for 303 touchdowns. You got to win the game because Dan Marino had a lot of those stats, too. And ultimately, you know, you got to win.
Tony Kornheiser
Dan Foul had them as well.
Sean
That's right. I'm glad you mentioned Phelps.
Tony Kornheiser
It does.
Sean
So I. You know, I'm with you. I know we're going to talk about them today, because the question is going to be Wither. Wither Baltimore. And they just don't seem to be. I'd say somebody else. I don't want to hear about the 49ers.
Tony Kornheiser
No, they're done, you know. No, they're done.
Sean
Those three teams, I know they're glamorous teams.
Tony Kornheiser
Baltimore has a chance. Baltimore has a chance because its schedule gets easier and they maybe Build momentum. But let's be fair here. Philadelphia bottled up. Lamar Jackson. Doesn't matter what his numbers are. He had no effect on the game. It doesn't matter. I mean, you need to give credit where credit is due to the defensive coach over at Philadelphia and all of their players. And as I've said for about three weeks now. Get off Sirianni. You people. Get off him. Shut up. Shut up.
Sean
Yeah, no, I mean, it's just enough. Sirianni's fine. I mean, it's really hard to look at the NFC and not think there's a collision course, a collision coming between Philadelphia and Detroit. It's really. That's what you want to see right now. If you, if you're talking about the league and not your own local team, whoever that is, that I want to see that.
Tony Kornheiser
Me, too. Me, too. And I think we probably all agree that at this moment, we think that those two teams, the NFC teams, are stronger than the AFC teams.
Sean
They are, for the first time in years, omnipotent.
Tony Kornheiser
They both, for the first time in years. So. Yeah, okay.
Sean
Absolutely.
Tony Kornheiser
All right. I'll. I'll try my best to do the show and talk.
Sean
You're gonna get there, so we're gonna get you through it. Some hot tea and honey.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, Michael Wilbaugh, boys and girls, I should say I've been drinking a lot of hot tea and honey, but the honey got all granulated and it doesn't melt, and I can't get it out of the, you know, they, you know, honey comes in, in those.
Michael Wilbon
A little Bear squeeze.
Tony Kornheiser
Lovely Bear squeeze bottles. But when it's, when it gets. When it's two years old.
Pat Forde
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, you have to take a knife and you have to pry it out of the bear's head. That's what you have to do. And so it's been surgical operation. It's been bad. All right, Pat 40. When we come back, a lot of college football and pepper spray. I'm Tony Kornheiser. You're listening to the Tony Kornheiser Show.

Tony Kornheiser
I'm wearing another sweater that has been eaten by moths. I have to bring it in again today. These sweaters that I get on sale now cause double chest they called. Duh. The cedar chest is killing me.
Michael Wilbon
It has been infiltrated.
Tony Kornheiser
I hate these moths. Hate them. Hate them more than I hate the things that eat my tomatoes. Big Big furnace plays in PAT40. So there's, there's only one way to start. PAT40 was at the game, was at the Ohio State Michigan game. And you think, well, what's the way to start? Is start. Is Ryan Day going to be fired? No, no, no, no, no. That's second. First is pepper spray. What happened?
Gary Braun
It doesn't taste very good, I can tell you that.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, Yeah.
Gary Braun
I was down on the field afterwards, absorbing the scene and you know, you hear the behind you and all of a sudden, I mean, all hell is breaking loose. And I ran over there to see what was going on and I kind of, I guess ran through a leftover tracing of it or cloud or whatever of it that the police had sprayed and got it in my mouth. I was fortunate I was wearing glasses so that I, you know, it didn't get my eyes. I guess that's what kept it from getting in my eyes. But I mean, what a scene. It was just so bizarre. And they had, I will say a lot of people got direct hit with that pepper spray. Players, coaches, staff, media. It was just complete mayhem and a really embarrassing way to end a wild, shocking game.
Tony Kornheiser
I understand that Michigan players are happy to have won that game, but what they did is over. That's over the line. I mean, I don't blame Ohio State at all. What about you?
Gary Braun
I'm with you. I think that if you saw, you know, what happened at North Carolina State, North Carolina and Arizona State. Arizona and other places this Rivalry weekend. Visiting teams don't have license to try to take over a stadium after they've won. And in these instances, especially Ohio State, Michigan, you are absolutely just provoking a fight. You know, I mean, you are. You are asking for it and then for it to happen and say, oh, my God. Ohio State's classless. Takes two to tango.
Tony Kornheiser
No, no.
Gary Braun
Win with class, lose with class. It's a great, great victory for your team, your program, your school. Get on the bus or the plane or whatever and go back to Ann Arbor and run around that campus and celebrate if you want, but not Ohio State.
Tony Kornheiser
Let me get to Ryan Day. I mean, you can ask a question at this time of the year, is Brian Kelly going to lose his job at lsu? Is Mike Norval going to lose his job at Florida State? But they are all smaller than Ryan Day, who can beat everybody except Michigan. He can't beat Michigan. He can win the national championship. Because, Pat, I'm sure you'll agree, Ohio State's going to be in the playoffs. They're going to be in the playoffs, but he can't beat Michigan. What happens?
Gary Braun
Yeah, it's a fascinating, weird, awkward limbo because you can't fire a guy when you're going to the playoff. And you may be able to win the playoff. Yeah, you're still going to be the team with the most talent in it. And the one team that makes you faint is not in the playoff. Your one loss is by one point on the road to Eugene. Eugene. I mean, Ohio State's a good team, so you ride it out. And if he wins the championship, you're not firing him then, either. So you got to live with it, and you can't. The part of the problem is this rivalry has become bigger than everything else the team does. You can't let losing to Michigan become bigger than winning a national title. So if he wins it, he's still the coach. The problem is, anything less than that may not be good enough. And given his comments last week about how tortured he and his family have been by this rivalry. And then I was on the sidelines, standing next to his daughters, his teenage daughters. At the end of the game, just by happenstance, I didn't seek them out. I walked down there and there they were. And you see these two girls crying. With two minutes, two and a half minutes left in the game, they could still win. It doesn't matter. Like, the gravity of it had just crushed him. It was a painful sight. Don't do this to your family anymore, man. You're a good coach, go find another job somewhere else. And you will be happier and more successful and your family will be happier and more successful.
Tony Kornheiser
They will be in the playoffs even if they, you know, they're not going to lose in the title game in the Big Ten because they didn't make it. Penn State is going to lose in the title game probably. So Ohio State will be in the playoffs as well. Penn State. Which leads me to this as you look back on the weekend, because Ohio State's still going to be in the playoffs. Is Miami losing a bigger development than Ohio State losing?
Gary Braun
Yes. Beyond the psychic damage to everyone at Ohio State? Yes, it is. Because it totally puts Ohio State on the brink. And that's why I cannot wait to see for once the stupid TV show with on Tuesday nights with the rankings that mostly just serve to make the committee chairperson sound like an oaf is actually important because most of the teams are done playing. So where is Miami and where are the three loss SEC teams? Yeah, because they're done. So whatever order they're in on Tuesday night should be the order that they're in on selection Sunday. Unless Clemson blows everything up. But is Miami in the playoff field this week or out vis a vis those SEC teams?
Tony Kornheiser
And then if Clemson were to beat smu, which is ranked higher than Miami, you know, should figures to be, then what happens? It's. Well, I love the show. I mean I'm not saying it's a great show, I just love it because of everything that goes on around it. I have something very interesting to say to you though. SMU, which can win the ACC, Arizona State which can win the Big 12, Oregon which can win the Big Ten and Texas which can win the SEC are all new to those conferences. What do you make of this?
Gary Braun
It's wild, isn't it? Yes, for a long time. Mostly because like of Nebraska and Texas A and M and some others flailing around, we thought oh my gosh, you realign. It's really hard. Well, maybe not now part of that, you know, the schedules are so imbalanced because these conferences are so big. So maybe you get a little bit of an easier path. But by and large, I mean these teams have earned getting where they are. I mean Oregon's undefeated and a pretty dominant undefeated and the only undefeated SMU is the only other power conference team to go undefeated in its league. And SMU I thought was ready. You know, I mean what I'll tell you what it says, what you're asking. Basically a conference affiliation doesn't matter as much as the conferences want you to believe it does. In an nil era, yes, you get a good coach and you live in a place proximate to talent, and you can get talent and retain talent and get 10 transfer talent. Like if you're at, oh, say, the school in Dallas, Texas, or a school in a booming metroplex like Phoenix, you know, you've. You've got chances there. You can get players and you can retain players with nil dollars. So I think the opportunity is there, and I do think we're going to see more kind of mobility with teams up and down the ladder in conferences. It's going to make it more interesting.
Tony Kornheiser
So I believe that if Georgia loses to Texas in a respectable manner, that they're going to get in with three losses. But I would ask you this. Is it possible the last team will come down to Alabama or Miami?
Gary Braun
Yeah. Yeah. That's. That's, that's kind of what I expect right now.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Gary Braun
And again, that's why I think the Tuesday thing is going to be so interesting. Both are done. They can't improve or damage their standing individually. So I do think it probably is Miami as the second, or possibly even third, but probably second ACC team versus Alabama with three losses as the fourth SEC team. I think that is the crux of it. And I've been referring to them as the Zombie Tide. You can't kill them. They keep losing games. It doesn't seem to matter. They're still there. Last year they made the playoff when nobody thought they would. That's Alabama. Give them credit for tenacity. Give them credit for brand power. Give them credit for somehow making sure the selection committee always kowtows to them. Whatever you want, however you want to look at it, but they're there. And I think we are going to hear a whole lot today and tomorrow and probably even after the ranking show Tuesday night from people who are going to be flacking for either the Tide or the Hurricane.
Tony Kornheiser
What did you make? And I'm sure you agree that he had to do it. The chairman of the Big 12 saying, what are you doing to us with Boise State? We're better, we're better, we're better, we're better. I know he had to do it. I think that conference stinks. I do.
Gary Braun
I mean, I think Boise State has had a great season and would deserve to be ahead of the Big 12 champion at this point. You know, I mean, yeah, he did what he had to do, and I don't blame him. But. But, I mean, Boise had A really good year. They have. And they came very close against Oregon and they'll be team. They've beaten a good Washington State team. You know, they. I would. If Boise takes care of business Friday night against unlv beats them again. I would personally put them in that top four ahead of the Big 12.
Tony Kornheiser
Champion if I had to make a case for teams that might get hosed. They are two teams, BYU in South Carolina. How do you feel about them?
Gary Braun
Yeah, yeah. I mean, I would feel bad for both of them, although I don't feel that bad, really, for anyone who doesn't make a 12 team playoff.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, it's 12 teams, so shut up.
Gary Braun
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Gary Braun
Well, in a season when it looks like we have 11 good teams, so. But. But those would be the two. I mean, South Carolina is probably the hottest team in the country, playing great, you know, piling up big wins.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Gary Braun
The way they started. And some of the teams they lost to are directly in competition with them with the same record, namely Alabama and Mississippi. And so it's hard to justify putting them ahead of either of those teams. And then BYU. Absolutely. 10 and 2. Great season. Lose out on a chance to go to the championship game on a tiebreaker, beat SMU on the road. You know, I think the problem for them is they had so many life and death escapes. You know, they were. They were fortunate to win against Utah and Utah's not good and fortunate to win against Oklahoma State, which is just downright bad. And I feel like the committee kind of decided a few weeks ago, and not necessarily unjustifiably, that this team was a little bit counterfeit compared to its record.
Tony Kornheiser
I mean, I'll give you that. But if I ran the Big 12 after I ran my yap about how we should be ahead of Boise State and I looked at the fact that Iowa State and Arizona State are going to be in my final and not BYU and Colorado, much more attractive teams, particularly Colorado. At that point, I might be tempted to shut up. What do you think?
Gary Braun
Nobody would admit it, but without question, the conference office was rooting hard for byu. Colorado matchup, championship game, or at the very least, Colorado against anybody that anybody wanted.
Tony Kornheiser
Anybody? Anybody. All right, plug your podcast for us.
Gary Braun
Okay, College Football Inquirer. We got our Sunday overreaction pod out here today. On Monday with Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellinger, Yahoo Sports platform. Find it wherever. Second best or first best podcast in the world along with this one.

No, I don't play the fool. I play the foil. That'll do it for us today. Before we get to the mailbag, let me just say love is but a song we sing. Fear is the way we die. You can make the mountains sing. It's actually make the mountains ring or make the angels cry. Though the bird is on the wing and you may not know why. Come on people now Smile on you, brother. Everybody get together. Try to love one another right now. Jesse Collin Young doing the lead, wrote the song the Young Bloods Came to Harper College when I was there and did that song. Very, very nice. My thanks to Michael Wilbon and Pat40. My thanks to today's sponsors. Remember, you can listen to us on Apple podcasts, Spotify and Odyssey if you listen to the show through Apple. And straight to the top. We have a haiku for your health from Shad Tony Getwell soon, either you will or you won't.
Tony Kornheiser
That's 50 50.
Michael Wilbon
Now we enter the Chicago Bears portion of the mailbag. Subject, Matt Eberflusse. This is from Kenny Ray in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Tony, tell Wilburn that Matt Eberflusse finally called a timeout during the meeting where he was, well fired. Yeah, Eberflusse Managing time, Making Change as bad as Matt Eberflusse is at managing time, I bet he's even worse at making change. So I'm guessing his convenience store next fall will be cashless. Patrick sitter, Sioux Falls P.S. eberfluss the gift that keeps on giving. Chessie Ann, Binghamton. Dear Tony, the biggest downside to your throat affliction in the late Thanksgiving holiday was we never got closure to the story of the dog's diarrhea. Well, I will direct you to the Open where Tony gives us the update where Chessy is now allowed to take the Imodium if necessary. Dissipating, lessening, discriminating minds need to know about the current state of your dog's digestive tract. And sports news. My alma mater, the mighty Purple Eagles of Niagara, the school that produced Frank Layden, Calvin Murphy and the great Hubie Brown, defeated your Binghamton Bearcats in a Black Friday tilt that I don't think got the national recognition it deserved. This was a big win for Western New York over Central New York. But like you, I grew up on Long island, so I consider anything north of the Throgs Neck Bridge to be upstate.
Tony Kornheiser
Upstate.
Michael Wilbon
Sean Griffin, Leesburg, Virginia.
Tony Kornheiser
Upstate.
Michael Wilbon
This is from Tim Wildsmith. Now to Nashville. Dear Mr. Tony, my wife's little brother asked us to watch his dog while he was out of town for Thanksgiving. Someone, possibly me, but I admit nothing, gave said dog human food at the dinner table. I see where this is going. And the next day things were not so great. Did you get the whimper at night, though? I told my wife that Chessy was having the same problems, but that did not make her feel better about the situation. I called her brother and he instructed me to swing by his house and get some medication. I go to the house, I find the bottle. I read the name Metronidazole mile my way back home. I pressed play on Tony Tuesday show and absolutely lost my mind when mere moments, mere moments into the show, you named that exact medicine. I could not believe what I was hearing. And yes, I said aloud to myself, I know that medicine. Hope Jesse's feeling better.
Tony Kornheiser
Better, better. Good.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah. O for November from John Mosman. The Washington Wizards went over November. That is all.
Tony Kornheiser
I can't does possible. I can't say this enough and I can't say it loud enough. They're the worst team in the NDA and they have a general manager named Michael Winger who all he says is, you got to give me eight to 10 years. It's going to take a long time. They don't have any players anybody wants. They don't play together as a team. They get beat all the time and they're no good. They're just no good. I understand if you're covering the team, you look for bright spots, but, you know, first paragraph of every story should be. They lost again. They stink. They're the worst. And now let's look for bright spots.
Michael Wilbon
I'm going back 15 years when I was in college, and they were fun to watch.
Tony Kornheiser
They're terrible. Yeah.
Pat Forde
Not anymore.
Michael Wilbon
This is from Dan Fitz up in Philadelphia. Good morning, Mr. Tony. I hope you and your family had an enjoyable and restful Thanksgiving holiday. Well, not restful, nor really enjoyable. The woman I'm related to by marriage is about to complete what I'm now calling the TK2 step. Love that name. By completing both the DC Marathon and Rehoboth Beach Marathon, six weeks apart.
Tony Kornheiser
I didn't know there was a Rehoboth Marathon.
Michael Wilbon
Last month she finished the Marine Corps Marathon in D.C. in about four hours. Not her best time, but there were some.
Tony Kornheiser
She must be really good then.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, that's.
Tony Kornheiser
She must be really good.
Michael Wilbon
This upcoming weekend, on December 7, she will attempt the Rehoboth Marathon while I attempt the half. Yeah, proving one once again. She is twice the person I'm. If only she complete the Binghamton Marathon, could she go for the Tony Triple Crown? Although it's probably known as the Dr. Bailey Memorial Marathon up there. Or maybe The Louise Gluck 5k run. Fun run, if one exists. Either way, we need a dinner recommendation for after the race. Possibly your preferred seafood joint if you have one. Otherwise, I can check whatever leftovers are in your fridge.
Tony Kornheiser
The preferred seafood place is right out on the highway.
Michael Wilbon
What are you thinking of?
Tony Kornheiser
Right next to arena is the big one. Big Fish.
Michael Wilbon
Big Fish? Well, Big Fish is a staple, and post race, they have everything.
Tony Kornheiser
Big Fish is good.
Michael Wilbon
Also, there's the Henlopen Oyster House in town, which would be a little bit more of a fine dining, but Big Fish is a great.
Tony Kornheiser
It's really good.
Michael Wilbon
Thrashers. Thanks for all the laughing conversations. Thrashers don't even ask for ketchup. This is from Mark Goodeltski. The difference between Rockville and north Bethesda. Dear Dr. Grandpa, I live in the neighborhood just south of the Rockville city limits where Gary Braun and Steve Sands grew up. The new high school where Sands went is stunning, by the way.
Tony Kornheiser
Really?
Michael Wilbon
When we bought our house more than 20 years ago, it was listed as Rockville. When we sell this house, it'll be North Bethesda. Strictly marketing. Still not as bad as the part of Gaithersburg. Changing their address to North Potomac.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, just a clown shop.
Michael Wilbon
This is dangerous. From Tim from Colonna, bc. Michael. Reading the mailbag. I look forward to this.
Tony Kornheiser
BC Is British Columbia, Canada.
Michael Wilbon
I assume so yes Boston College we few, we happy few, we band of brothers for he that had his first email read by Michael this should be a sea shanty shall be my brother be he nerve so vile to own a Subaru that this day shall be gentle his condition and gentlemen and listening on their commute shall think themselves a curse. Henry did not write in and hold their manhood's chief whilst any speaks had had their email read the day before Thanksgiving Can I be the official gas fitter of the Tony Kornizer show? And we'll end with Elliot Oshansky I was getting used to oh no. This is from Matthew Wine referencing an Elliot Oshansky email. This is levels within levels. I was just getting used to Elliot Oshansky emailing from comac instead of hopod Matt Wine from Pittsburgh thank you.
Tony Kornheiser
Got a new bike tonight. Everyone as always do wear white later.
Michael Wilbon
He gets the rebound, passes it to the man, shoots it and boom goes the dynamite.
Nigel
The Christmas lights still burning bright uptown Though it's been a couple weeks I brave the snow as I walk home I pull my scarf around my cheeks I know I could just stay inside well I try Our friends all say I'll be okay in time there's truth in that I guess spring, summer, fall got through it all and I still standing more or less But I don't think I'm gonna make it through One more Christmas without the bells will ring, the kids will sing I know.
Tony Kornheiser
The.
Nigel
World is gonna turn the new year brings much better things they say.
Tony Kornheiser
It'S.
Nigel
A lesson I will learn but the silver linings all turn gray and decay I do my best to still get dressed up nice and go out with my friends but time moves slow and like the snow it seems it's never gonna end and I don't think I'm gonna make it through One more Christmas without you and it takes all I have to make it through each day I count them all since you win.
Pat Forde

The Christmas lights came down last night uptown There's a warm front on the way I've even seen patches of green outside A hint of better days But I don't think I'm gonna make it through One more Christmas without you One more Christmas without you Sa When I call for you Would you even hear us sound and it may reach you When I'm lost with you I found Cause your love won't turn around Cause I love turn around.
