Previously on the Tony Kornheiser Show. I lost my glove, and I.
Co-host
We're going to have to start clipping these to your jacket.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I mean, this is. Okay.
Co-host
Or get the long string.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. I mean, what are we talking about here? I mean, they are my choice. I have three other pairs of gloves sitting in the house. I don't want them. Yeah. I don't care about them. I like these.
Michael Wilbon
And they haven't got enough reps. You.
Tony Kornheiser
Don'T trust them in a game time situation, so. So we'll see what happens. Those apparently are going to arrive today. The new gloves.
Co-host
Allegedly.
Tony Kornheiser
Allegedly. But again next week. We're looking at 7ft of snow and temperatures in the O's, and I'm not gonna have crank up the. The Tony Kornheiser show is on now. I have the gloves. I'm not thrilled. I'm not thrilled. The insert is not leather as they were in the original gloves.
Co-host
It's fast fashion.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, they're fuzzy and they keep you relatively warm, but there's no flexibility to them. They're not nearly as good as my old gloves. Not nearly as good. And it's the stuff that you buy online, you can't touch it, you know, And I don't want to even send it back, so I'm just gonna keep it. I've got them. I wore them this morning out with the dog in the cold, and they were all right, but I don't like them. Yeah, I don't like.
Co-host
You have to protect mom's Amazon account. You can't send too many things back.
Tony Kornheiser
I am not sending it back, but I would happily burn it. I mean, they're just not. They're not.
Co-host
Although I would like to send you to the kiosk at Whole Foods to see if you could manage the return.
Tony Kornheiser
It just. Is that where you go? Yes.
Co-host
And there's always a line.
Tony Kornheiser
I've never been. Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
You've never been to a Whole Foods.
Tony Kornheiser
No. Never been to a Costco. Never been to a Whole Foods. Don't feel I've missed that much in my life. This is the opening show, and so we're going to. Let me just dispense with some sports for those of you who care about this, and I care about it because I watched the golf tournament Saturday and Sunday. I watched a lot of it because I was rooting.
Co-host
A beautiful weekend at Torrey after the rains were terrible.
Tony Kornheiser
On Thursday, I was rooting, as was Michael, for Denny McCarthy, who is local for us. We know his family. He's taken instructions from Dolan for years and years and years. So we rooted for him. And he was in the lead at one point yesterday. In the lead on a Sunday about two thirds through three quarters, through the.
Co-host
Front, three through six. Yeah, about an eight footer for eagle.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Co-host
Coming off of a birdie and some great par saves on the opening hole.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, yes. And it's not that he played badly because he shot 71, he was one under, but he missed three or four potential birdies. Fifteen feet in missed him. And he's a great putter. And at the end and has been.
Co-host
Since he was a kid, made everything a great putter.
Tony Kornheiser
And at the end, if you stayed till the end, you heard Dottie Pepper say when he was on 18 that when he got to the green in two to try for eagle, he said, I am overdue. And Dottie Pepper said, yes, he is overdue. Now, he missed just by a half a foot on the eagle on 18. Had to be a 35 foot putt, you know, and. And he made a lot of money. Yeah, he made a lot of money. Made $730,000 or something that finished tied for fifth. Now, for him to win, I'm going into detail here just because he's local for me and us. For him to win, he would have had to shoot 67 or 66 because Maverick McNeely and Ludwig Oberg played great. They played great about Nancy's Oberg. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Co-host
It's like you're doing the cool Kool Aid, man.
Tony Kornheiser
They couldn't have caught him. He got Denny caught. He couldn't have caught them. He couldn't have. He needed 67, 68 to do it. And it's par 72. But he had a good. A good tournament. A good tournament. And one cannot argue with Oberg, who looks like he's going to be a big star, right? Yes, oh, yes. Real big star. Okay, so let me get off that and also mention I didn't watch, I don't know, 40 seconds of the NBA All Star. I didn't watch 40 seconds. I was on TNT. And the introduction, the setup was endless. And I just said, you know, I don't. I'm done. I'm done. I don't. I don't care. I really didn't care. So I didn't get to it at all. Wilbon will be on a little bit. Maybe he got to it. I don't know. I didn't. I held no allure for me. What held allure for me was I spent Three hours yesterday afternoon. Or maybe it was Saturday afternoon. I'm not sure. Watching the Saturday Night Live music special, which I believe was live when it was on.
Co-host
Correct. The Friday night special. Not the documentary.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. That was actually. They made reference to the fact that it was Valentine's Day, and I got the sense it was. And that that was a live show with stars galore. Yeah. As was last night. Last night was the. Not the retrospective. Last night was a. Was a live show. Was a live show that went three hours. I lasted about an hour, hour and a quarter. I stopped. I can. I. It's taped. I can go watch it again. But I wanted to talk specifically about a bunch of things and I'll do two nights ago first, because that was the musical thing. And for me, and we've discussed this a lot, I've reached that point where the Grammys are a foreign language to me. I don't know any of the people on the Grammys. I don't know anything that's culturally up to date. And I think that the great generation gap has always been music. I do. I suspect in the 1600s, it was music as well. Somebody said, I'm gonna play a different instrument. And all the old people said, what are you talking about?
Michael Wilbon
All these kids play the loop.
Tony Kornheiser
There's only one instrument. What are you doing? So I think that's always been the case, and I'm on the wrong side of the cultural divide. I'm not. I'm not making a case that I'm right. I'm not. I'm not right. I'm wrong. Okay? But it's me. I'm watching. So when they bring out stars who are stars now, and I just sort of look and I don't get it. Jelly Roll. I don't get it. He's got tattoos all over his face, which I think is why he's an attraction. And he starts out. He does a Johnny Cash medley. It's okay. I just. I'm looking at him thinking, wow, he's doing Johnny Cash. And I don't have a second sentence on that. And then he comes out with Snoop Dogg, and I don't get Snoop Dogg. Everyone loves Snoop Dogg. Yes, everyone loves him. I love him. I just don't get it. I just don't get it. So there's really no point for me and watch. There are other people out there. I'm sure Big Bunny is a huge star. He's a big star. He's not for me. He's singing in Spanish. It's lovely. It's rhythmic. I don't understand any of the words. I don't know any of the songs. So, you know, Via con Dios, for those people who love. That's fine. It's just not for me. Miley Cyrus, I gotta say. Not for me. Not. Not for me. Some of the people. Devo. My God, where did they find Devo? Wow. Devo were freaks 40 years ago. Where'd they get them from?
Michael Wilbon
Whip it right there.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, yeah. There were some people. Some people who I'd heard of who have real talent, in my opinion. Real talent. Mumford and Son. Oh, sure, they're real good. Yeah. They're loud, they're rhythmic, they're driving. They're good.
Co-host
But that's music you recognize.
Tony Kornheiser
They did an interpretation of the Boxer and. Oh. And it was really good. But I thought to myself, where's Paul Simon? Paul Simon is Lorne Michaels best friend. Where's Paul Simon? Which leads me to the beginning of last night.
Co-host
He's taking a nap.
Tony Kornheiser
Paul Simon is out there with who?
Co-host
Sabrina Carpenter, Song of the Summer.
Tony Kornheiser
I'm unfamiliar with Girl Meets World. I'm unfamiliar. I. I don't know who she is.
Co-host
The villain. Unnamed villain from Driver's License.
Michael Wilbon
I think she's related to Bobby Carpenter.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know that. But she's not related to Mary Chapin Carpenter. I can vouch for that. And she's singing. She's singing rhythmically with Paul Simon, who's.
Co-host
The harmony in his 80s.
Tony Kornheiser
He's in his 80s, and he's doing Homeward Bound, one of the most beautiful songs ever written that I'm proud to say my son sang in front of an assembly in high school, as sung by.
Co-host
Yeah. Michael at his senior dinner at Marais.
Tony Kornheiser
Fantastic. Go, Frogs. Hey.
Co-host
Thank you.
Tony Kornheiser
And yet Paul Simon is, as is his right. It's his song. He's a genius. Paul Simon is reinterpreting his own song. And I. And I felt that the young woman was sort of lost, trying to stay with him. Maybe she'd never heard this before. Because it wasn't the Homeward Bound. Right. Wasn't the Homeward Bound.
Co-host
Yeah. You're used to a very. The single melody of it. The single line throughout.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. And Paul Simon, as is his right, is, you know, do what you want.
Michael Wilbon
He's played it a million times.
Co-host
But it would be okay if he.
Tony Kornheiser
Was doing it alone. Yeah. I would have felt better.
Co-host
Yes. But this is one of those things you talk about. Does the show borrow from the celebrity or the aura that is around some of These pop stars. And you think about Song of the Summer. And she was the. Her song was used for one of their most viral sketches from the last year, which is a Domingo sketch. And she's game for anything. So you want to try and get her on that stage when you have the eyeballs at the open.
Tony Kornheiser
But do you know the last time I watched Saturday Night Live is at least 35 years ago.
Co-host
Oh, the 8:00 start helps.
Sean McDonough
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
I mean, I never watch it, so I don't know anybody. Like I asked you, who was that funny woman with the big forehead? You said that was Kristen Wiig. And I know. I know her. She's funny. She's terrific.
Co-host
You're going back to a cast from 10 plus years ago.
Tony Kornheiser
Now more. Yeah, it's like Molly Shannon. Yeah, she's funny. Really physical and funny and daring. Daring. You know, that was. That's good. The. The woman who was on with Will Ferrell sitting at the Anna Gas diet. Oh, she was terrific. Wasn't so terrific. Last night. Was terrific. Yeah. The other night just. I just said, who's that? It's very funny, but a lot of. And some of the guests. You would have loved it. Backstreet Boys were on. Backstreet Boys were on. And they sounded like the bat. And everybody in the audience sang along. Everybody.
Co-host
It's Brian. Needed a little bit help at the start. I just love. There's a moment from a documentary they did years back where he called himself the Scottie Pippen to Nick Carter's mj.
Tony Kornheiser
Were they the original guys?
Co-host
All original. They're still there. Kevin looks the exact same. Howie D's had to glow up over the years.
Tony Kornheiser
The guy with the tattoos on his face.
Co-host
Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
A.J. he was the bad boy. Well, he's. Yeah. Bill Murray was on. Did a funny skit. Introduced himself as a crooner. Nick Valentine on Valentine's Day. Bill Murray's.
Michael Wilbon
That's the old bit that he used to. Nick Summer. Nick Winter, like the Amtrak bar car. Yeah, It's a great bit.
Tony Kornheiser
He's funny. Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
He's one of the greatest.
Tony Kornheiser
I mean, now, if you're young, you might not think he's funny, but I thought he was funny.
Co-host
There's a subversiveness to him where you're like, I don't think he actually wants to be here. And that carried over to the show last night where he's sort of looking at Colin Jost making, you know, riffs on him.
Tony Kornheiser
So I didn't see. I. I went to sleep after Peyton Manning Last night. That was enough. That was enough for me.
Co-host
Who did I really like, Eli?
Tony Kornheiser
Belinda Carlisle. Oh, yeah, she's really good. Wasn't she in the Go Go's?
Michael Wilbon
She absolutely was. Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
She sang on her own. She's really good.
Michael Wilbon
Super talented.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, she's really good. Not. I got. I'm going to get to the showstoppers. By the way, Questlove and his band are great. Oh, yeah. They can back up anybody. Yeah, they are fabulous. Eddie Vedder was on. Not my cup of tea, but. But okay. Yeah, I understand why he's there. David Byrne was all over the stage and people imitating David Byrne while he was on the stage right next to him. David Byrne is, you know, he was a. A big. Oh, sure. And apparently willing to do anything. He was out there with Arcade Fire. You know, he's willing to do anything. David Byrne and every. And is charmed when people make fun of him. And so that. What did I write down? There was a wonderful little skit with Maya Rudolph, who's brilliant.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, love it.
Tony Kornheiser
Makes you. No. Goes into character and makes you laugh. She's out there playing somebody or other. I don't know who she was supposed to be. And Fallon is next to her playing Prince. And Prince doesn't speak. She just. He whispers in her ear. She gives the line. The line is funny. The line is so funny. And then she says. And Fallon with her says, and now share Cher. Like, come on. Okay. That should have closed the show because Sher got out there, shares my age. I don't think she was singing. I think she was lip syncing. But she was wearing a black jacket and basically naked. Basically wearing a very, very small body suit and out there being Cher with some surgical procedures having been done over the years with Cher and I. It was fantastic. It was that good. There were two or three fantastic performances. One was Cher and one was Lady Gaga at a piano. Oh, yeah, you know. Okay. It doesn't get better. Yeah. Now, Cher was much louder and it was a greater production number. And you should end the show with Cherry. And they ended with Jack White.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, the White Stripes.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Okay. Yeah, you should end it with Cher.
Michael Wilbon
Dino Dinelli. Bugatti.
Tony Kornheiser
Dino Dinelli was not out there. But Lady Gaga, you just. Okay. It's a funny name. But the talent is undeniable.
Michael Wilbon
We just go back to the Super Bowl.
Tony Kornheiser
Just spectacular talent. And I wrote a whole bunch of things here and, you know, I just wanted to tell you all of those things.
Michael Wilbon
Can I say my favorite moment? I. I didn't Know.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, the open was great. By the way, Fallon did the Blues Brothers.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, that's great. Gotta do that.
Tony Kornheiser
And again, it was Soul man did it as Soul man with like, 919 guys behind him.
Co-host
He didn't break. He didn't break?
Tony Kornheiser
No.
Co-host
He's always known for breaking in every sketch.
Tony Kornheiser
No, no.
Michael Wilbon
And that was my favorite.
Tony Kornheiser
He did a funny. He did a funny moment about his own audition. He said he turned into Adam Sandler and started to stutter. And it was very funny. He said, lauren, so if you want.
Co-host
To go down this rabbit hole, there are these specials out right now where you can look at all these famous, you know, cast members and their interview, how they interviewed, the process for that. They do. They have a documentary on the making and sort of the history of cowbell.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Co-host
So Questlove also made this great retrospective of all the music over the 50 years.
Tony Kornheiser
He can play drums for anybody.
Co-host
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And by the way, one of the Saturday Night Live guys, Fred Armstadt.
Michael Wilbon
Is that Fred Armisen?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, Fred Armisen. He played drums for the B52s. Yeah, he played.
Michael Wilbon
He's legit. Great musician.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So I knew that he was on the cast. So what. What did. Is it. What about last night? What did I miss?
Co-host
Last night actually became a All Star Game of sorts, where you just.
Tony Kornheiser
Steve Martin's intro was great.
Co-host
You just had the Gulf of Steve Martin. Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
That was funny. That was funny. And Mulaney was funny. Yeah. Mulaney said 894 hosts and only two have committed murder. That was pretty funny.
Co-host
It's one of those, you know, we joked about this. You need your small device when you're watching this for you to look up some of these musical acts from the.
Tony Kornheiser
Day before for us.
Co-host
You're sitting there like, all right, who's Mulaney referencing here? Because you get the first one and then you have to think about the second one. No, I was going to say to you, it very much felt like an All Star game. And you go back. For me, I really started watching the show in the late 90s. So that is the late 90s to the early 2000s. Will Ferrell, the Will Ferrell Best of Sketches, where people are sharing that around when you're going to, you know, through dorm. Dorm rooms in college. That's the cast I remember. Then you sit there going like, well, the cast was no longer funny when X left. And you just look at all these.
Tony Kornheiser
It's funny all the time.
Co-host
All these cast members who come back and he just smiled Seeing them. And they could have gone back to some of the legacy making sketches and sort of reinterpreted them, but they didn't. And they just brought in these characters who made you smile.
Tony Kornheiser
There is nothing that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler do together that won't make me laugh. Yes, they're great. They're great. Over. And that was not a cast that I paid attention to. I was long gone by then. But they're wonderful. And I think the legacy of the show is still probably great. Yeah.
Co-host
But then you get. You see someone like Eddie Murphy who's bridging that.
Tony Kornheiser
I saw him in the audience.
Michael Wilbon
He was on.
Tony Kornheiser
Tom Hanks was on. Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
But Eddie Murphy, that was my favorite part because he did like a Jeopardy. Thing playing Tracy Morgan while.
Co-host
Tracy Morgan.
Michael Wilbon
Tracy Morgan was.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, so. All right, so I'm watching that Black Jeopardy. Yeah. And he's. There's this guy says he's Tracy Morgan and I think the guy in the middle is Tracy Morgan.
Co-host
That's a joke I didn't understand.
Tony Kornheiser
I didn't know that was Eddie Murphy.
Michael Wilbon
That was Eddie.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
And he was great because he's making everybody laugh. You could tell he was improving stuff and it was cracking everyone up, which is what.
Tony Kornheiser
That was Eddie Murphy.
Michael Wilbon
That was Eddie Murphy.
Tony Kornheiser
Because Tracy Morgan's much larger. He weighs 250.
Michael Wilbon
At one point, the bit was like, I think we're related. And Tracy Morgan's like, I don't see it.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, just.
Michael Wilbon
It's really funny. And don't forget, for the longest time, Eddie had like a. I don't want.
Tony Kornheiser
To say a feud.
Michael Wilbon
But he wouldn't come back. He went live forever. And they finally, you know, healed that wound. And he's back in the fold now. But, yeah, you can't think of Saturday Night Live without thinking of Eddie Murphy.
Tony Kornheiser
So if you asked me, what was the moment for me where I went really? Him, her, really. Keith Richards is in the audience. Keith Richards. I go, what?
Michael Wilbon
Left my scarf.
Tony Kornheiser
He's got to be in his 80s. Yeah. Oh, sure. He looked great. He looked exactly the same. Did anyone? Exactly. The Keith Richards. Are you kidding me? So I, I just. I will go back today and I will watch what I. What I'd missed. And then there's all sorts of documentaries.
Co-host
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
That I don't know that I'll get to any of them. But, you know, I mean, from my high school, Alan Zweibel, an original writer, he was there. Picture him. I picture him and his wife. And it was, you know, going back.
Michael Wilbon
To Simon don't you think it would have been fitting if Paul Simon if he had come out in a turkey suit?
Tony Kornheiser
In a turkey suit. But still crazy. Yes. Turkey suit. Sure.
Listener
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, I mean, I was, of course, Homeward Bounds.
Michael Wilbon
Brilliant song.
Listener
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
But I felt badly for the woman singing.
Co-host
But you look at the timestamps of, you know, turkey suit to then Paul Simon coming back after 9, 11. And then you think about even like this, and you just think about the leapfrog over 50 years.
Michael Wilbon
It's amazing.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, you know, he. And I think I have this right, that he and Lorne Michaels lived in the same apartment building. They lived across the hall from each other. Something like that. And they became best pals.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, I think you're right on that.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, so. And it was just. I will get to the rest of it. I'm glad. I don't usually watch.
Co-host
It was one of those shows where you felt like you were getting a glimpse behind the scenes to just a group of friends having fun together.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Just.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, it's like a class reunion.
Tony Kornheiser
Lovely. Just lovely. All right. We will take a break. Wuban. When we return. I wonder if he watched the All Star Game. And I don't think he did. I'm not sure he did. I didn't. I'm Tony Korenhajo. Wow. What's up?

TONY Kornheiser show.
Tony Kornheiser
This is a group called Acoustic Underground. They are based in Richmond, Virginia. This is a song of theirs called Lonely Astronaut. Lonely Astronaut is a dreamy, atmospheric folk rock song that captures the feeling of drifting through space, both literally and emotionally. The lyrics paint the picture of an astronaut lost in the void, longing for home, love and connection. Its soaring harmonies, cinematic swells and a sense of weightlessness. The song mirrors that universal feeling of isolation, the pull toward what truly matters. It's lovely, isn't it? It's written so well. Again, Lonely Astronaut is the name of the song. Acoustic Underground is the group and they play in Michael Wilbon. I gotta confess, I watched a lot of the golf because I was rooting for Denny McCarthy because he's ours and all of that. And when it came time to the NBA All Star game, I was on TNT and they did what seemed to be a 40 minute retrospective because they're getting out of the basketball business. And I didn't stay for the game. Did you stay for the game?
Listener
Stay? I didn't watch a second of any of it. I didn't think I watched. Having to do with All Star Weekend was I watched the end of the dunk contest with Max McClung winning for the third time. And you know, in the old days when people actually did stories that didn't talk about analytics and you know, somebody had 5, 5, 5, 5, 5,. 5, 5 and 5 on a Tuesday for the 14th time and they actually wrote stories. There would be a real story about Max McClung winning the dunk contest. A real cultural piece that could examine a lot of things. And you got everybody in the history of the game that you need to talk about the dunk right there. Yeah, you got Julius Irving. And Michael couldn't have been there because he had to be there in Daytona. But you have Julius Irving there and Dominique was most likely there. And you got Vince Carter there because he's doing it on tv. And this Carter is the most approachable athlete ever to talk about anything. And so, you know, there'd be a piece. But, you know, people don't do those anymore because they got to write about somebody scoring 14. 5, 5, 5, 5, 5 and 5.
Tony Kornheiser
So you and. You and I. I don't know. I don't know if we agree. I don't know. We know McClung because he played for Patrick Ewing at Georgetown for a couple of years. And then I think he went maybe to Texas Tech or someplace like that. And I'm thrilled that he wins the dunk contest every time. It's three times now he's won the dunk contest.
Listener
Nobody's ever done that.
Tony Kornheiser
It's wonderful. But it's the NBA All Star. You and I know you've heard me say this. It's the NBA All Star game. He's a G league player. He's not in the NBA. And I. And for me, I go, I don't know. I DQ him. I DQ him and I shouldn't.
Listener
He's employed by the NBA because those teams, it's like Brody James. Brody James actually does play in the NBA. He's not a frontline NBA player. And Max McClung isn't that either. And every year you look in that dunk contest, he get a different jersey on.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Listener
Like it was Orlando this time. I don't know what his contract is like, Tony. I gotta admit, I don't. I don't know how much he's playing. If he's on a two way, I don't know. But it's not like he's playing in Europe and he's coming over and just, you know, So I, you know.
Tony Kornheiser
Can't the NBA get NBA guys in their dunk contest? I didn't know any of the people in it.
Listener
I didn't know because guys don't. They barely play the games. Yeah, they're going to be a dunk contest.
Tony Kornheiser
That's right. There is that. There is that. So they had a format. They had three different teams coached by three different guys on tnt and then a rising star team. And again, you didn't watch it. And I didn't watch it.
Listener
No, not a second.
Tony Kornheiser
But here's where I would go. Because I have been so impressed with the hockey, so impressed with how hard they play and what they're doing. I would take what you wanted to do and I'd go one step further and I would do this the way hockey is doing this. Not just one night. I'd have a United States team, a Canadian team, a European team, and an African team. And I would have them play what do you think?
Listener
Yeah, he'd be great. It'd be great. It just not gonna do it.
Tony Kornheiser
Why?
Listener
Because. Because they don't want to have a competitive environment during All Star Week. They don't want to do it. I mean, I've taught you. How many, how long have I been on this topic?
Tony Kornheiser
A while.
Listener
For 10 years at least. Maybe more. And so in part, they don't want to do it, in my opinion. I know they don't want to be. They don't want to get competitive. Basically, Adam Silver, he won't say this. He was turned down because I have asked Adam Silver about it publicly on camera so many times that he has started his answers by saying, I knew you're gonna ask me that. I'm like, yeah, well then do it. But he can't do it because he can't make the players do it. They don't want to do it. And when I say they, I presume. And I could be wrong about this. The American players don't want to do it because I was talking about not that format. I was talking about USA versus the.
Tony Kornheiser
Rest of the world versus the world. Yeah, yeah.
Listener
And the rest of the world now has like 150 NBA players out of the four out of the 425. And that's roughly what it is. So we're talking about a third. And the American players don't want to do it. We play this game all the time. Those, my close friends, all of whom are, you know, we're all basketball fanatics and we have group checks and you know, the people in this text, who are, you know, Neville and don and Dwayne McKnight and Brian Dunmore, we do these things and we talk about who would be on the, who would win if you had a rest of the world team. The starting backcourt would be Luka Doncic and Shay Gilgis Alexander.
Tony Kornheiser
They're pretty good.
Listener
Yeah. Well, the starting front court would be, would be Giannis Antetokounmpo Joker and pick a shooter. I don't care which one. That's your starting lineup with a guy named Wembanyama coming off the bench. I don't think the US team wants to play that well.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't have you.
Listener
I don't think they want to do it.
Tony Kornheiser
You've watched the hockey, right? You've watched some of the hockey?
Listener
Yeah, yeah. The different, the different sports and different cultures and one is completely the most catered to, spoiled brat culture, you know, in the world of entertainment. And one isn't and they're. They're. They're not. You know, there are some globally famous hockey players, but not like. Not like NBA players.
Tony Kornheiser
No, no, they're not making.
Listener
They're not now making an average of $50 million a year. No, they're not. And so that group doesn't have to do really anything it wants to do. Didn't want to do. So they don't. So I would say do away with it, you know, picking up all sorts. But it makes too much money, it gets too much attention for the league, and I don't know what it does for the partners because Turner's out of the business now. ESPN doesn't do. The Turner All Star Weekend's a Turner event. The NBA is not in that business. Except for the Friday night Celebrity Game. So I don't know.
Tony Kornheiser
That is dreadful.
Listener
Next year, that.
Tony Kornheiser
I gotta say, that Celebrity Game is dreadful. They shouldn't have that. It's awful.
Listener
I'm glad they had that because I coached it one year.
Tony Kornheiser
I know. But now that you're not coaching it, I think we can do away with it and make it a one and done for you. Because it's awesome.
Listener
So hard to watch that. That it's devolved into that. And so, no. I texted people last night to say, was this new thing any good? And I didn't get answers. That convinced me it was.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Well, the hockey is good. The hockey is good. But you're right. They're different athletes, different cultures.
Listener
Different, different everything.
Tony Kornheiser
It's complete. You're right about that. So did you. I gotta ask you about this. Cause I know how much you like Dawn Staley.
Listener
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
UConn went into South Carolina and killed them. Killed them. I did not expect that. Did you?
Listener
Well, nobody, nobody, nobody could expect that, in a way. If you're Gino Auriemma and you are thinking only because this is why you wake up and breathe in the morning, only winning a national championship again, because you won 11 of them, you got to be a little bit worried about how that played out, because you're going to have to fade, presumably. You have to play them again.
Tony Kornheiser
You may have left it all on that court. It's possible.
Listener
Gino was quoted as saying, I knew he had this in us. I didn't know that it would come out now like this. But you. The long game. And by the way, if you are a UConn fan and you look at it short term, you're like, you're thrilled, you're happy.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Listener
You crushed South Carolina and they had.
Tony Kornheiser
Won like a thousand in a row in South Carolina.
Listener
The last loss they had at home was in November of 2020.
Tony Kornheiser
That's okay. That's a waste.
Listener
71 in a row. So. But now, as you look at the rest of the season, and the rest of the season means six weeks, you presumably are. You're looking at two number one seeds, along with maybe UCLA and usc.
Tony Kornheiser
That's probably.
Listener
Who else could be a number one seed?
Tony Kornheiser
Maybe Notre Dame.
Listener
Maybe Notre Dame. But you're looking at. You're looking at. Those are number one seeds. You're going to have to play again, presumably. And. Okay, you tell me who you would take in a rematch.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, South Carolina. Oh, sure. But I was telling me who would.
Listener
Be motivated when Don Steely used the word embarrassed.
Tony Kornheiser
When I. When I was going through the dial yesterday for whatever reason, and I saw. And they were up in the. I don't know, early in the third quarter by 20 or 25. I sort of thought something was wrong with my television because I couldn't believe it.
Listener
Yeah, I just saw the score and said, whoa, what. What are you. A partial. What are we talking about here? So that will line up as a great storyline to watch going forward. If you like women's basketball at the upper level of the pyramid, how can you not want to see that again?
Tony Kornheiser
Did you watch the golf?
Listener
No. There was no watching of any sports since Thursday. None. Zero.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Listener
I've seen nothing. I'm trying to get even. Saw any college hoops. No, no. This was a weekend in which now there will be nothing. And there's no. Basically because the NHL. Well, the NHL does have this event, although, you know, it's not every night. There's nothing until Friday. Yes, Nothing until Friday. There will be speculation which will allow certain shows in our network to just talk about the Cowboys and Aaron Rodgers, and that's all they will do. We will not do that. But there's, you know, there's a. There's really.
Tony Kornheiser
Tony, we got to do something. We got to talk about something so it can showcase.
Listener
It can showcase college basketball. That's what it should be. Because college basketball now doesn't really exist for very long. It's become. Nobody will want to admit this who's associated with college basketball, but college basketball has become a niche sport in terms of watching, because it doesn't really exist on a primary level, on the level that it used to exist until last week when the super bowl was over. And then, you know, the tournament starts in less than a month.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Listener
Championship champ week or Whatever we're calling that now, whatever the marker is, whatever stupid abbreviation they come up with, Champ week will start in three weeks. That's it. So college basketball, you don't get long to figure out who somebody is. Unless it's a kid playing for Duke. You don't get very long to sort of settle into the college basketball season. How many shots do you get to say, wait a minute, well, St. John's who's on that team and how good are they? What, what do we, what do you, what do you mean? Well, we start.
Tony Kornheiser
We just had, we just had Auburn, Alabama at Alabama. Auburn was very impressive in that game.
Listener
You don't get. There's not a long run. This is not like college football. Well, you're talking about this stuff and the polls and this and that for 10 weeks.
Tony Kornheiser
That's right. No, it's changed. It's changed. Do you have any opinion, you know, three weeks, I'll get you out of here on this. Do you have any opinion on the punishment for Yannick Sinner, the three month ban that does not impose any of that time during any major.
Listener
No, I don't, I just, I can't, I don't, I don't have a. I don't feel okay. I mean, one. And I, I, you know, I do care about tennis at the top of the pyramid and sinners at it because he's been number one since, you know, the holy trial is, you know, stepping down and falling out and retiring and becoming old. And so yeah, I do, I care about what is going on with center, but I just, I don't know how prevalent this is. I don't know what this is. Is this like, you know, baseball in the 90s? What is this?
Tony Kornheiser
I mean, they caught him, they, they did a blood test or something and they caught him with this stuff in his system. His response was, my trainer used it for himself and when he was dealing with me, he didn't have gloves on, so it entered my body that way. This is, of course, nobody can believe this. Nobody in the right mind can, can believe this.
Listener
Right?
Tony Kornheiser
But, but he's okay, but is it.
Listener
Andro or is it creatine? Like, what is.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't, it's some sort of something. I don't know the name and I don't.
Listener
And I don't. We, we like, we left that. Right? I mean, that was a thing. Which is now hard to believe, but that was a thing nearly 30, 30 years ago. The summit of, the summit of Sosa and McGuire was 1998 plasterball or something.
Tony Kornheiser
It doesn't really matter. It's. Do you believe them or not? And both of these committees, WADA and the other committee just said, we believe you didn't do it intentionally.
Listener
Well, okay, for me, it's not. Do I believe or not? It doesn't matter or not. Oh, yeah, that's my judgment. So I don't, I don't believe him. But does it matter or not that that's the bar for me. And again, that. That wasn't really the bar in 1998.
Tony Kornheiser
No.
Listener
Summer of.
Tony Kornheiser
No, no, no.
Listener
So. So. And we believe. We also believe that it assisted baseball players in some way on the single notion of distance. And does that matter in tennis?
Tony Kornheiser
Does that matter? I think when we found out that John McEnroe, when John McEnroe admitted he had taken steroids and we said he doesn't have any muscles in his whole body, who cares?
Listener
He did. A sinner.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. So.
Listener
So I don't. It doesn't move me. Not yet. Now, if we start getting testimony otherwise, then maybe. But at this point, nah, nah, they're gonna come up with something else or I'm not gonna pay attention to tennis until the French Open or whatever.
Tony Kornheiser
That's fair. All right, enjoy yourself and I'll talk to you tomorrow. Michael Wilbon, boys and girls. We have a day off today, which is why I said I would see him tomorrow. We have the golf. TGL is on all day, I think on espn. So we have a completely useless Monday in February.

Tony Kornheiser
Good name. Good name. Henry grandson name. So Sean was doing the play by play last night on Canada and the United States. I'm not the world's greatest hockey guy, but I made sure to sit down and at least watch a period and a half or so of that particular game before we get into this because there's two huge issues to talk about. Did someone tell me you were under the weather during the week and it was not necessarily a lock that you would do the play by play, or am I making that up?
Sean McDonough
That's correct. Like a lot of North America, I've been sick for about two weeks. There's a lot of stuff going around that apparently doesn't go away very quickly. And I first got diagnosed with the flu and then bronchitis. So, you know, I stepped aside Thursday. Probably could have done the USA Finland game on Thursday, but you know, Bob Washoesen was here. He's ready to go. There was no reason to push it, but there was no way I was going to miss that Saturday night. And I'm glad I didn't because it was really very interesting and exciting in a lot of ways.
Tony Kornheiser
We will get to all that. I will also tell you that Wilbon was so excited. This is Wilbond because he spends, I don't know, $85,000 a month on clothing. He loved the Canadian uniforms. Did you see those? Did you see those? I said, yeah, I thought they were nice. Did you see Those. So I thought.
Sean McDonough
I think all the uniforms here have been terrific. As a matter of fact, I mentioned that on the air. You know, in the past, some of the NHL All Star games, the uniforms have been a little strange and sometimes it's hard to see the numbers and the uniforms, the team uniforms looked a lot alike. You almost couldn't tell who was on what team. But they got it completely right this time. You know, I think all four team uniforms are really cool.
Tony Kornheiser
Are you going to join me in being surprised that Finland. It doesn't say Finland. It says Swohe or something like that. You aware? I mean, what is. What is that?
Sean McDonough
Well, I assume it's in Finnish and I'm sure it probably means Finland. I did not do a Finland game. So I was, as I said I was supposed to do Thursday night and then stepped aside because I was still sick. But yeah, you know, it's. It's part of the uniform, you know, just like the crowns. I've asked a few different people, you know, what's one of the three crowns on the Swedish uniforms? And no one seemed to know the answer. So Ray Ferraro and I were watching Canada, Sweden. We're just sitting in the press box watching it and we googled it and there are like three or four possible explanations. None of them, you know, seem to be any more have a stronger case than the others. So I'm still not sure what those mean either.
Tony Kornheiser
I mentioned this the other day when I talked about the first series of games that I was so surprised made me laugh because I was so stupid about this. When the woman who came out to sing the Finnish anthem, I said I was so surprised it was actually in Finnish. It wasn't in English. I thought, how stupid are you, Tony? Seriously, how stupid?
Sean McDonough
Stupid in their own language.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Sean McDonough
In North America.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, let me get to this.
Sean McDonough
That would be interesting though. I mean, what. I think we had to. If we played over in Finland, if we had to translate the US national anthem in Finnish into Finnish and sing it with the same music, that would be difficult. So the anthems, maybe the band you were promoting here as I was coming.
Tony Kornheiser
On, maybe they could do the Henry's could do it. They could do everything.
Sean McDonough
Yeah, 100%.
Tony Kornheiser
The anthems are a big deal here in the subtext, I believe. But we're going to ask Sean because he's on site and he's going to know better than we. Two things stand out about this game. One, the fights immediately by two brothers seemed totally deliberate. And the second thing was that About. Was that about the anthem from the other night? Was it about tariffs? Did you expect this at all? Do you have a sense of what went on there? Because I don't.
Sean McDonough
I do think it was premeditated matter. I know it was because the Tkachuk brothers admitted that in the postgame presser. You know, they just want to set the tone and. And they certainly did. You know, I don't think. I know. The Tkachuk brothers were not happy with the booing of the anthem on Thursday night because they were asked about it afterwards. And I thought it was interesting because they did their press together. And when someone asked about the booing of the anthem, Brady immediately kind of tapped Matthew on the knee as if to say, okay, you take that one. Which was smart on Ray's part because, you know, he's the captain of a Canadian based team, the Ottawa Senators. So I don't think he wants to wade into an international controversy by talking about the anthem thing. And Matthew just very succinctly said, hey, I didn't like it. And that's really all I've got to say about that. So it was clear, you know, the lot. The Americans didn't like it. You know, I think a lot of the Canadian players and coaches didn't like it. They said in the lead up to the game that they hoped that their Canadian fans would not boo the US national anthem. It's one thing to boo players in the game, but it's another thing to not be respectful of the anthem. So, you know, obviously it happened. I think it's added to the passion of it. But John Cooper, the Canadian coach, was asked about the political backdrop and if that's added anything to the emotion in this tournament, particularly when these two teams play each other. And he said no, that he had not heard any of his players talking about politics or tariffs or Canada becoming the 51st state or any of the things that have certainly upset people up here.
Tony Kornheiser
That's where I went immediately, that it had to be tariffs, because I know that the anthem was booed. And I have to say, Sean, I don't recall ever hearing before. And I heard it. I watched the pregame because I thought the thing was starting at 8, I was in for the pregame where they unannounced announcer said, please don't boo the anthem. I've never heard that before.
Sean McDonough
Announcer. You know, they started during the NHL regular season here in the last few weeks when tariffs and the 51st state stuff, yeah, obviously became a topic, international topic. They started announcing because people Were booing the US Antimate games in the Canadian based Marines. They were making announcements, you know, please be respectful of it. And for the most part, that had toned that down. But I think last night, because it was Canada, US head to head. You know, I talked to a couple friends of mine who were with the US Traveling party, family members of the USA players and coaches. I saw them today and I asked them how they were treated and they said people were very friendly and people were apologizing to them about the booing. You know, they were saying, hey, it's not about you, it's not about your country. You know, it's about the politics of it. I think most of it was directed at our president.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, that's, that's, that's immediately where I went that.
Sean McDonough
Right. They're not booing the USA hockey players or our country as a whole. They're booing. You know, the political climate that has changed here in the last couple of months.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, I need to ask this. The Chucks, are they wild men? Is this something where you would say, yes, sure, they're going to do this? Yes.
Sean McDonough
I mean, they're both highly skilled players, but they're also. You're not afraid, obviously. The physical part of it and the amazing thing, Tony, is a couple nights ago, earlier in the week, Ray Ferraro and I went to dinner before the Canada Sweden game and the Keith Tkachuk and his wife Chantel and their daughter Taryn were there. And Keith was talking about one of the highlights of his career was playing in then the Molson center, now the Bell Center, I think was the first year this Arena Open in 1996 in the World cup of Hockey, the USA beat Canada in the final. He got in a memorable brawl which we rolled in the video of last night after his boys fought. Yeah, with Claude lemieux. He scored five goals in seven games in that tournament. He also had 44 penalty minutes. So it really was reminiscent of those days in terms of the fighting. We said after the first period in our on camera, the intermission, you know, all the games we've played in the NHL this year, the regular season, the most fights there's been in any game is three. And that's happened in five different NHL games over the course of the year back to October. We had three in nine seconds.
Tony Kornheiser
Nine seconds. So.
Sean McDonough
So it was, it was different, but it certainly just added to what was already tremendous build up to the game.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you think now this is a new thing? This tournament is a new thing. It is an invention to take the place of a sagging All Star Game. And God knows the NBA is trying to invent something as well, because both of these games, the All Star Games, have sagged. Do you think Gary Bettman will call the KACHUK and say, hey boys, what are you doing?
Sean McDonough
No. I mean, if he did, it might be to say thank you, because I think it's only added to the interest and attention that it has gotten.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Sean McDonough
And I do think if it's a USA Canada final on Thursday, what happened Saturday night, especially in the first nine seconds of the game, will certainly heighten the anticipation for the rematch in the four nations final. I think this has been a huge success. You know, certainly I think all of us, you know, I enjoy my job very much. The All Star Games, you know, aren't that fun because they're not competitive and the players really don't want to be there. So, you know, this is exactly the opposite. Not only do the players want to be here, but the hockey is tremendous. You know, a lot of the people involved in the Canada Sweden game, including John Cooper, said it's the fastest hockey game they've ever been involved with. And, you know, obviously with what happened Saturday night, these guys are into it. It's not just a friendly little exhibition, you know, we're talking about, you know, Canada has been the gold standard for the history of international hockey, right? They've won more Olympic medals, more Olympic gold medals, they've won more World Cups to hockey, the Canada Cups before that. So, you know, they're the gold standard. And I think this bunch of Americans believes that, you know, they are, they can make claim to being the best hockey country in the world in terms of the talent of the top players. So I think that's a lot of what this is about.
Tony Kornheiser
Just a small note. Sidney Crosby had been, as captain of the team. Canada had been 22 0, and now he's 22 and 1. Wilbon and I were talking about this on Friday and the question was, is it greater than, lesser than or equal to a game 7? And both Mike and I said, well, it's lesser than. You know, we don't know anything about this, but Sean, those hits looked real. I, I mean, this actually looked, I'm not going to say game seven of a Stanley Cup Final, but, but this actually looked like something players wanted to play. And I'm Wilbon, and I may have undersold it.
Sean McDonough
Oh, completely. I think a lot of people did. You know, there were people saying, well, you know, will they really go all out? Will they risk an injury when they have the rest of the NHL season to play. And, you know, a lot of these players are going to be in the playoffs. And, you know, the. Before they even played a game, the players and coaches were shooting that down immediately, emphatically. And then I think they backed up those words with the way the games have gone. I mean, the intensity has been off the charts. You know, there's certainly been physical games. I mean, Canada lost 25 shots in the opening game. Sweden, you got guys diving in front of pucks. The USA at 31 or 32 hits in game one against Finland, they surpassed that total last night. So, you know, guys aren't concerned about getting hurt. They're completely into it. And, you know, I'm glad the World cup is coming back in a couple years and, you know, I'd like to see the All Star game completely go away and have something like this every year instead.
Tony Kornheiser
So, yeah, I mean, I'm watching this game and McDavid scores on a great goal to begin the game. He's so fast. He gets the goal for the next eight minutes after that, anytime a Canadian player went into the corner, a United States player hit him. I mean, I'm sitting there, I got nobody to say this to, but I'm thinking, whoo, this is. This is actually real. Which leads to this question, is this a one shot? Don't they have to do this again?
Sean McDonough
Oh, I would think so. I think this has been wildly successful. And to your point, right? I mean, McDavid is. He's not the fastest skater in the world. He's right there among them. It might be Nathan McKinnon on the Canadian team who'd be in the argument with him. But, yeah, not long after he scored that goal in a blur, Charlie McAvoy, you know, knocked him in the next week.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, yeah.
Sean McDonough
And, you know, I think it was like, okay, Connor, you're not gonna, you know, fly through us again tonight. So, yeah, that was a tone setter, the intensity. I mean, literally, Tony, you know, before the game Saturday night, several. A couple of these. Brady Larkin and, excuse me, Brady. Dylan Larkin come to mind. They both said, this is the biggest game I'm. I was. Have ever played in, in my life. You know, and so that's how these players view it. It's not, you know, nonsense. They believe it and they completely backed it up with the way they played Saturday night.
Tony Kornheiser
We can get that again in the final, right? We can get United. Okay.
Sean McDonough
Yeah. If Canada beats Sweden. Excuse me, Finland in regulation on Monday. Afternoon, they will advance to the final because all that could happen to them was they would tie for second in the standings and they would have beaten both Sweden and Finland, so they would win the tiebreaker. So if they win in regulation on Monday, then they're guaranteed of playing the US in the final.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't have to talk about your career. You're great at play by play, and we all love to watch you and listen to you. But has this surprised you? Like, did you think it was going to come up to this emotional level?
Sean McDonough
I thought it would be intense and emotional. You know, I kind of scoff when people say, oh, I wonder if they'll play hard. I mean, I think anytime you put on the sweater of your country, and especially when you play in this rivalry, you know, Canada and usa, which has clearly become the number one international rivalry in hockey, you know, it's going to be super intense. But, yeah, I mean, and I think the whole thing that got it started when Mario Lemieux walked out to center ice. Yeah, that was one of the most amazing. I thought the ovation for Sidney Crosby when he got introduced as part of the starting lineups was, you know, that gave me chills. And then Mario walked out, and you're like, oh, my God. And, you know, Mario kept looking around like, somebody please come over, Sydney, please come over so they'll stop. And that really set the tone, as John Cooper and some other people said. You almost felt sorry for the Swedes in the first 10 minutes of the game because the crowd was so alive. And, you know, clearly the Canadian team was juiced by that. They came out. You talk about the speed of a game. I mean, they just overwhelmed the Swedes with their speed over the first 10 minutes or so. And Sweden finally found its legs, but, you know, they were already in a hole by the time that happened. But it's. I thought it would be super intense, but I don't know how this could be more intense. I mean, we did game seven of the Stanley cup final in June between Edmonton and Florida, and, you know, Saturday night was every bit as intense. Yeah, I mean, you're adding.
Listener
Right.
Sean McDonough
You're adding the playing for your country part of it. You know, you're not. You're not just playing for the Edmonton Oilers of the Florida Panthers and your fan base and your teammates. You're playing for your entire country.
Tony Kornheiser
If I'm not mistaken, the final will be in Boston. And I would hope that somebody brings out Bird, Ortiz, and Oar. I hope they walk out on the.
Sean McDonough
Ice right well, we were talking about that, right? I mean, now the difference, you know, Mario Lemieux grew up here in Montreal. Bob Yor is my all time sports hero idol since I was, you know, young as I can remember growing up in Boston. He was the man. And you know, he's still revered into an unbelievable extent in Boston. But do you bring him out? He's Canadian.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Sean McDonough
He's got American citizenship now. But you know, he's from Perry Sound, Ontario originally. So I would think they would bring out Micah Ruzzioni.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, yeah. Oh sure.
Sean McDonough
Son of Boston.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Sean McDonough
Miracle on ice, 1980. He voiced the tease. I hope you saw that.
Tony Kornheiser
I did.
Sean McDonough
Into the.
Tony Kornheiser
I did.
Sean McDonough
Last night I actually sent Mike a text.
Tony Kornheiser
I just thought the whole thing was so well done.
Sean McDonough
Nice job reading it. And I just thought the video and the music and the images, the whole thing was just fantastic.
Tony Kornheiser
It was so well done and I was not going to turn over to see someone win the NBA All Star dunk contest who's not actually in the NBA. And I love the kid because he played at Georgetown, but he's not in the NBA. So anyway, it was great. I look forward to watching the final. Thanks for coming on, Sean, thank you very much.
Sean McDonough
Always my pleasure, Tony. And thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it.
Tony Kornheiser
Sean McDonough, boys and girls. We will take a break. We will have email and jingle when we return. I'm Tony Kornheiser.

I had to deal with my own white toothpaste calamity lately, courtesy of my elder masculine child. The local market 32 doesn't stock his preferred Crest Kids Strawberry Toothpaste in the Mickey Mouse tube, or even the Spider man or Mandalorian tube. So I bought Crest Kids Cavity and Enamel Protection Toothpaste instead, figuring the strawberry flavor would be the same. Imagine my surprise when it turned out not to be the red gel we were used to, but a white paste. He flat out refused to brush his teeth until his regular toothpaste was returned, so I ordered a six pack on Amazon. Now we should be good to go for at least a year, and I'll use the latest rejected toothpaste once I get through the Colgate Bubble Fruit Toothpaste in the Minions tube. Okay, Jim Jacobs in Austin, Texas. I've been closely following the toothpaste saga as I too fondly remember the the bluish green color of Crest. I had a realization this morning when looking at my handful of Go to shampoo Head and Shoulders Classic Clean. It's the exact same color as the Crest of my childhood. Since Head and Shoulders is also a Proctor and Gamble product, perhaps an interdepartmental discussion of P and G could result in a properly colored toothpaste and maybe a minty fresh shampoo. The Reverend Mark Schaefer, Albany had a Rathskeller. Rathkeller is German for council cellar and is usually a basement restaurant or tavern. So a lot of campuses that want to feel old and established will christen their drinking establishment Rathscalers. The one in Albany was great, was dark, full of large back booths made of dark wood with an intimate vibe that made a great place for burgers or beer if you're old enough. Then we came back from summer break before senior year, discovered that the Rat, we called it the Rat too, had been redesigned. The booths were gone, replaced by bright gray cafeteria mall chop style tables and chairs way much too light. They're not the kind you buy in a store, if not in a place where goods are bought and sold. Where, pray tell me, would a bagpipe be acquired? Does the Bagpipe fairy leave one under your Yeah, I got carried away. I was wrong. I was wrong. Alex Thompson this is long. Should we do it? When I hear the bagpipes on the show every now and then, oh, it reminds me of my wedding day and a great story that I hope you and the Littles will enjoy. Let me explain. Back In June of 2000, my wedding was going perfect to plan and I oversaw a big surprise for everyone. My family has a Scottish background. We thought it'd be incredible to have a bagpipe player play Amazing Grace for when the grandmothers came down the aisle to sit down. So I spoke with my dad about it and he put me in connection with a piper to see if he was available. You got to pay the piper, he said. He already had a wedding earlier in the day and he had that wedding and reception, but he could do our wedding if it was just a ceremony, I told one song, you're done. The wedding planning went so smooth that one of the only tasks had for the wedding day was to get the piper from his car behind the church into the back door up to the balcony so he'd be hidden until the bagpipes started to hum like bumblebees at the right time. So there I'm waiting behind the church for him and this is back in the pre cell phone days so I don't know if he's going to make it or not. But I see him park, get out in his kilt and he almost looks like a leprechaun. He gets his pipes in the trunk, makes his way towards me and about 20ft from me the strong scent of scotch whiskey overwhelms me. Then he speaks and I find the source. He is sauced. He's drunk as a coot. How did this man drive a vehicle here? More importantly to me, how is he gonna play Amazing Grace? Well, I can't stop now. So I pay him and I take him inside and I get all set up and I'm scared to death he's gonna pass out before the grandmothers come down. In my panic I tell my dad the situation. He says don't worry, Scott's do most things better with little whiskey. Also, who can tell if a piper's on key or not? So here comes the ceremony. I'm at the altar as the doors open for the grandmothers and those pipes go off like a beehive has been hit and he plays the most beautiful Amazing Grace you've ever heard. Not a dry eye. In the church the crowd cheers. At the end, he gives a little bow. I never saw him again. I don't know his name. I just wonder how he got home that afternoon. If this gets read it would be my second email in less than a month. I wonder if that makes me Chuck and Roxy worthy. Isn't that great? Tony Kornheiser
What is delivery? What? Timmy Sofera, Fort Mill, South Carolina Are the discontinued products the new game we're playing? I think I got a good one for you because I swear you're the one that got me hooked on them over about 10 years ago. I started listening back in 2012 or so and sometime around then you talked about Triscuits yes, and how much you like them. Well, that got me hooked up. Sea salt and black pepper Triscuits. They're the best. Sea salt, black pepper Triscuits. I'd add some deli meat and a little block of cheese. Or even better if you shredded the cheddar. It was absolutely delicious. Even got my neighbor Ruthie to compliment me on it one time when she tried the combo out. Nicest thing she's ever said to me. But you guessed it, the sea salt and black pepper flavor is gone thin. 66. Kilt taken out. I just thought you should know. And tell my brother E.J. t.J. To eat it.
Michael Wilbon
I think it's 86. He should have said, not 66.
Tony Kornheiser
86. Yeah, yeah. To 86 somebody at a bar. They're 86. Rusty Frederick, Savannah, Georgia I'm still trying to unpack all the disconnection evident in a sentence you uttered on Friday's podcast. So I said to Carol, can you get me new gloves? Because you belong to that Amazon thing. Nothing older sounding has ever been said into a live microphone in the history of broadcasting. Of that I'm confident you made mention of that too. That I said that Amazon thing.
Michael Wilbon
That was almost the title of the show.
Tony Kornheiser
That was almost the title. Yes, Brian Elliot. I just wanted Michael to know that as an elder millennial, I clocked the reference on Friday show to the Counting Crows. And I've reason to believe that the new game should be trying to catch all of his musical references. The Counting Crows is. Is. What's his name?
Michael Wilbon
Oh, I forget. The bloke is the lead singer. Adam Duritz might be. Yeah, that's.
Tony Kornheiser
That's Jeff Leonardo's great friend. Oh, when. When we were going in the bus in the middle of the night because Adam Duritz was up all night anyway but lived in California and so it was a three hour difference. Jeff would call Adam and they would just go on and on for hours. Isn't he the guy Counting Crows? Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
Adam Jarrett's pretty good, right? Yeah, yeah, very good.
Tony Kornheiser
I remembered that Jason ladd who says Dr. Not that kind of Dr. Jason Ladd. This emails a little date a little late due to my self imposed podcast delay and parenthetic. There's a person of the tuba.
