Hey, it's Tony. We've got a packed show for you today. We'll start off by talking with Barry Zvaluga about Washington's loss to Green Bay on Thursday night. And we'll get into the rest of the week. Two games with Jason Locke and Fora and James Carville and Jeff Ma will call in with our weekly picks. But first, commerce. What is it that makes the all new Hyundai Palisade hybrid an incredible suv? Is it the spacious interior that's comfy.
B
For the whole crew or the capability.
A
To go off road? Maybe it's up to 600 plus miles of range. What if it's all that and more? What is it then? The all new Hyundai Palisade hybrid.
B
It's.
A
Is it the driver behind the wheel?
B
No.
A
Are you sure? The all new Hyundai Palisade hybrid. So much more than just another SUV. Visit HyundaiUSA.com or call 562-314-4603 for more details. Previously on the Tony Kornheiser Show. This is called Holiday A Bill's love Story. It's a romance built around the Buffalo Bills and Luke has a cameo in it. So we need to get Luke on the show. Absolute. Find out if he has dialogue. I had dialogue. I had a line in the America. What a shot. Yeah, what a shot. Does he have dialogue?
C
Luke is not one to shy away from a speaking opportunity.
A
That's exactly right. And I wrote him a note and I said, are you in the gazebo? You know, the Tony Kornheiser show is on now. We are guest loaded today. We're going right to guests. We're going right to Barry's Verluga who was in Green Bay last night for that game. And I, I will confess out loud before the game, I wrote a note to uncle Big Al and I said, uncle Big Al, have a fine game. And he said, when do you think you'll be going to sleep? And I said, I don't know, about 9:30. At 9:49 last night, which I found this morning. He said, you know, get back up. And I said, long gone. I just wrote long gone. I got out of the game at 14 nothing. The packers were dominating at that point. It got to be a one score game. Barry, you were there. Did you ever feel that Washington was in it and they could actually win this game? Or did I make the right choice in bagging it at 14 nothing?
C
I hope you enjoyed your Z's because they were well worth it. Yeah. So yes. Did it get to 17 to 10 early in the fourth quarter it did. And the only thing I thought was I went to bed with four minutes left in the Ravens Bills game and woke up and was like, yes. Wait, what? And the Vikings obviously came back against the Bears and this is the third night football game of the NFL season. And then I thought, okay, well maybe the team that is getting dominated and has been run out of the stadium actually still has a chance. And then the packers got the ball back and they immediately scored. And it was not a non issue. I think the, the takeaway for who any, you know, from anyone who watched that game has to be less about Washington. There are plenty of questions about Washington coming out of that game and more about Green Bay. That is a team that is every bit a contender in the NFC and for every prize there is to win out there because not just Jordan Love is a competent, above average NFL quarterback with good weapons, including a raft of tight ends. I had no idea were, were that good. And Matt LaFleur is a really good, experienced play caller, but because they have a defense that is fast and strong and suffocating. And Washington really felt all night like there were no receivers open. Daniels had nowhere to turn. He could not rush when things broke down. He only had 17 yards on the ground. So yeah, there was a fleeting glimpse where because of things that had happened in recent history, you thought maybe, oh my gosh, this team that has been outclassed all night maybe has a chance. But the packers erased it immediately and they, they look like among the class of the league after two games.
A
I had no idea their defense was this good. Perhaps I should have had an idea after last week's game. But there was one point, like right at the end of the first quarter, Washington had like run, I don't know, six plays and gained three yards, something like that. They had nothing, absolutely nothing. I mean, Green Bay, Green Bay beat Detroit last week. Smothered Detroit. Detroit had 13 points. They averaged 33 a game. Last year. They were the number one high scoring team in the league. So I guess I should, I should agree with you that, that, that the Green Bay defense is really good.
B
Yeah. And I think, I think what you.
C
Find out, you know, in listening to people around here in Wisconsin and, and just kind of watching what played out is that they've invested a lot of capital in that defense. In terms of draft picks, there's a ton of first round picks on the defense. And I think if you go back to the Aaron Rodgers days here, there were all these like, you know, raised eyebrows. Well, they've never Taken a receiver in the first round, like, what have they really provided Aaron Rodgers at the tail end of that regime. But then you make the trade for Micah Parsons.
A
Yes.
C
And yes. It's almost as if this one player who is among the handful of players who can be considered best defensive player in the league, that he elevates that talent that was already there and he just makes chaos. Like he's. I think he's only down on the stat sheet for a half a sack. If you watch that game, you know how miserable it he made it for Washington. Date Washington drafted a tackle out of Oregon in the first round that they are throwing right into play on the right side named Josh Connolly Jr. And Micah Parsons against Josh Connolly Jr. With, you know, four years of experience versus two games a game and a half of experience is just, it's not a fair fight. So it'll be really fascinating to see how they use him going forward, how he can make everybody else around him more effective. I did not sit down in my seat at Lambeau Field last night and you know, before kickoff and say, let me see how this packers defense looks. That wasn't like the top thing on my checklist. And I come out of it being like, holy cow, they've got a quarterback who's absolutely good enough and they have a defense that is right up there with anybody else in the league.
A
Yeah, I should mention that Parsons, last year in two games against Washington when he was playing for Dallas personally, had four and a half sacks against Jaden Daniels, who is an evasive guy. He's very good. And now he's got five in three games. That's, that's a pretty big number. There were some injuries in that game. One of the wide outs for Green Bay early in the game, I think broke his shoulder or broke his collarbone. And Austin Eckler, who is, you know, who was at least at one point right with the Chargers, a very, very good back. Is he. Did he tear an Achilles? He's done, right?
C
He should be done. I mean, he was. It's one of those non contact open space. This was in the fourth quarter and he's kind of out in the flat looking to see if he's a check down for Daniels and just collapses. And when the team announces that it's an Achilles and it looks like that, like you don't. I mean, Dan Quinn would not say afterwards he's done for the year, but you knew by his expression we're going to wait for the official word. And my, my expectation is he's Done for the year. You're talking about Reid, the receiver who made a catch early in the game?
A
Yes.
C
For Green Bay, he'd been banged up. He's a weapon for them that looks like a very significant injury. And then for Washington, and no one's going to care or know about this, you know, or think it affects their season, but a defensive end they signed from the Patri Patriots, who'd played his whole career with the Patriots, from the super bowl years to the terrible years, Dietrich Wise Jr. Who was a really big, impactful player against the Giants and kind of made you think, you know, they've assembled a defensive line here without a Micah Parsons like presence that might be able to piecemeal together a very effective front. He was a big body and a big part of that. He, I mean, he looked like he got shot in trying to block an extra point to the point where my initial concern was did he have some sort of heart issue? Like he collapsed to that magnitude. And they brought the card out and he ended up waving as he went off. But he has a quad and I assume his quad just exploded. And if he's not out for the year, I'd be surprised at that, too. So that's. It's not a big deal nationally. It's a huge deal for Washington.
A
I would just ask this. There's a story in the post that Washington is the oldest team in the league, one of the oldest teams ever. Average age, like 28.7 or something like that, and that Green Bay is, for the second year in a row, the youngest team. I don't want to get carried away with this because there are a lot of. A lot of times savvy veterans help you win. I mean, I don't think it's arbitrarily automatic that if you're the oldest, you're going down the drain. And if you're the youngest, your future is bright. But do you have a different read on that?
C
No, I think it's right, but I also think it's. It's. If you think about some of the reasons why Washington is the oldest team is because they're bringing back Bobby Wagner at linebacker because he's such a presence in the locker room and he can still play. They're bringing back Zach Ertz at tight end because the same two reasons. He's such a presence in the locker room and he can still play. Caught a touchdown pass last night. He's got a touchdown in each of the first two games there. They're bringing in Von Miller not to play, you know, 60 snaps the game, but to come in on third and eight and rush the passer, that makes you old because you're bringing three hall of Famers in to play very specific roles. But this is what it says, Tony, is that that is an acknowledgment by the commander's front office and general manager Adam Peters that this is very much a win now moment. Like they, they opened their window with Jaden Daniels last year. It doesn't mean that it's going to end at the end of this year. It's open for the foreseeable future. But you don't bring Von Miller here on a one year deal because you want him to just mentor people. That's part of it. You bring him here because you think he can have an impact on the field and in the locker room on a team that went to the NFC Championship game last year and has designs on getting back there and more. So I think it's a, it's, it's a product of their aspirations in the immediate 2025 season and the fact that they have, you know, a second year quarterback, a young quarterback to build around that makes everything possible.
A
Yeah, I mean, I suspect that somewhere around, you know, December or January, people sat down and said, we're a lot better than I thought we were. Let's go for it next year, you know, let's go. I mean, I suspect that's what happened. On an entirely different topic. And I'll get you out of here. I can't get away from the Nats. I just can't. Apparently their 26 game series with Miami ended last night. It just seems like they play them every Single day now. Mackenzie Gore, he was undone by an error, another C.J. abrams error, who makes a lot of errors in the first inning, gave up two. They were unearned. He's only won and I know he's been on the injured list. He's only won one game, one game since the All Star break. That's two months. Should we worry about him?
C
So I'm not going to get into the lecture about why pitcher wins. Don't, don't matter. I mean, it's just not a meaningful stat. So that's a quiet, small lecture.
D
But I would say that like, he.
C
Has, he has not been as effective. That's definitely true. He was, of course, injured. My bigger concern, Tony, with the Gnats, is that the massive sea change that was firing Mike Rizzo, their general manager, and Dave Martinez, their manager, who won a World series together in 2019, which feels like eons ago, is that they wasted an opportunity to make real change on the field for the remainder of the season, which was from, you know, before the All Star break to the end of the season. In just bumping up Davey Martinez's bench coach Miguel Cairo, who immediately from the day he took the job, said, I'm not going to do anything different. My predecessor, because he's my buddy and I believe in him, and I'm like in tears because I'm taking over the job of my very good friend. They needed somebody who was going to come in and say, you know what? The way you guys have been doing, it doesn't work. It's not good enough. And we're going to start dotting our eyes and crossing our T's. And you, C.J. abrams, if you think you're as good as you are, as you think you are, and you're going to become a perennial All Star, well, it's not going to be by making these errors that cost Jake Irvin the other night just so Sloppy, that cost McKenzie Mackenzie Gore last night that turn into these big innings and make us a losing club. We are a losing club because you play losing baseball. And I just think that by not making a change in attitude at that time when they made a change in personnel, they wasted half a season on the field of real development. There's major changes coming in the next couple of weeks when they hire a new head of baseball operations. But I just feel like mackenzie Score's lack of production over the second half of the season is a byproduct of a coaching staff that was buddies with Dave Martinez. That didn't change anything about the way they did business after he was ousted. And it was a disservice to the players in that dugout who just weren't taught that they've got to do things better.
A
I agree with all of that. I never heard. I never heard it quite like that. And I find myself agreeing with all of it. Thank you. We will talk soon. Thank you, Barry.
C
Appreciate it, Tony.
A
Barry's Verluga, who's wonderful. He's a great columnist. Just great. We'll take a break and Jason Lock and Fora will join us and we'll widen out the stuff about the NFL. I'm Tony Kornheiser. You're listening to the Tony Kornheiser Show. Let's talk about your home security for a minute. People used to think that home security was just an alarm that goes off after a break in scaring the intruder off and maybe getting a neighbor's attention if you're lucky. But that's a reactive approach. And by the time an intruder is in your home, it's too late. Your feeling of safety is already shattered. Real security should stop a crime before it even starts. That's why you should trust Simplisafe. Their system is designed to be proactive, not reactive. Just ask Nigel. He's been using Simplisafe for years. He loves the peace of mind it gives him. Because I know he won't give it the full glory it deserves. I am personally filing this report to brag on your boy Jason Lochin, 4, now officially known in my household as Moneybags Jason. His Daily, yes, daily YouTube betting show absolutely spanked NFL week one worse than the Nat spanked poor Wilbon's Cubs last week. The best part?
B
Correct?
A
These picks aren't sponsored by some faceless gambling empire. No, they're done in the old fashioned way, strictly to make me money. And so far I'm buying steak dinners while my bookie is eating ramen. So here's a big shout out to Moneybags Jason and Beltway Ben. Keep it rolling fellas. Let's keep cashing in on Camila Cardoso like she's the ATM down the street. Do you want to explain?
B
Explain some Ben's a freaking WNBA first quarter savant. What the frig we do and we're going for lobster, buddy. We ain't stopping at Steak Next time you write in, I want to picture you with a lobster tail in each hand. Let's go. Am I allowed to? Probably. I'm allowed to cuss. Let's.
A
No, you're not. No. We are bleeding out. Yeah, it's okay. All right. So you're doing well with that show. The show is doing well.
B
We are. We're waiting for our corporate friends to help us take it to another level, as we promised. I'm told that's happening expeditiously, but. Yeah, look, you can't guarantee anything, but we're not two guys, you know, who give out picks that you know that. That the people who pay them tell them to give out because they know that five leg parlay will never hit in a billion years. And their numbers say that's the biggest sucker bet in the history of the world. Women. If don't play their lines, play our lines, you will rarely find us. Make a play that isn't altered in some way. Yeah, you have to pay a little bit of a price for it. But if you find value somewhere else, you're getting plus money on small leg, calculated smart plays that are made early before those lines change even more. So, yeah, like, I'm. I'm putting five, six hours a day into this, and I'm distilling it down our best 20 minutes. And we're doing it like a game show, and we're keeping score and we're totally transparent, and you can see when we're hot and when we're not. And we talk about, hey, dude, if I play an international soccer match in the next two weeks, a, someone punch me in the face, B, you better be on the other side of that bet.
A
Okay. Jason's very excited today and can't be because of his physical feeling because he's had a shingle shot and it has laid him low. Jason, I had two shingle shots. A second one was worse than the first. The second one, my left arm blew up. It literally blew up. But it sounds like you're not in good shape from this, huh?
B
Well, I also. I had the COVID the flu, and the shingles all in one.
A
That's insane.
D
Google.
B
They're like, it's cool. The pharmacist there was like, it's cool. I'm waiting to pick my son up at a never ending baseball practice last night, looking like death warned over. And one of the moms on the team is like, you feeling okay? Like, no, I'm really not. And please, I'm trying to keep my distance here. Because. And she's like, what happened? And I told her what I did, and she's a pharmacist, and she's like, I would never give anybody that single shot within two weeks of them taking the other two. Yeah. So, yeah, it's rough. It's. It's. It's rough. I feel like my core temperature is, like, I don't know, maybe 27 degrees. Like, I'm in a hoodie, sweatpants and thermal. And thermal pants right now. Like, I slept that way.
A
It'll go away in a couple of days, but the days aren't too much information.
B
Were you peeing orange? I know orange is a big color. Like, I'm literally. I swear to God, for two days, I'm peeing orange. Like, it's. This is not natural.
A
Okay. I'm sorry. I hope you get that. I know you will get better.
B
It's first world problem.
A
Okay. All right. We already talked to Barry, so we don't have to talk about last night. Barry was. What did you. What did you learn? Like, first week. Is there. Are there one or two things you learned from the first week that you're really looking at in the second week? Because if it happens again, it will confirm something to you that will change the way you look at the league.
B
I think John Harbaugh is officially on my hot seat for the first time in his, whatever, 19 years here.
A
Okay.
B
And that defense is a joke. And what I think is, I like Zach or he's a great guy. When you're. He's their defensive coordinator, former player. There's, like, very, very young, though, 34, 35. I think when you're in super bowl or bus mode and you have a Denard Wilson, who was a big part of Philadelphia's defense win when, you know, they turned the corner there, and who has been a coordinator before and is more experienced and multiple teams are trying to hire as their defensive coordinator. What you can't let happen is Mike McDonald goes to Seattle to be their head coach. And I said this all in real time. And Denard Wilson goes to Tennessee to run their defense, and you're left with Zach Orr and a staff that a lot of people at the time said was really lacking. Now, he addressed some of that staff in the offseason, but it should have been done before the start of last season. Again, I'm not Monday morning quarterbacking this. I talk about this four hours a day on the radio in Baltimore in real time. And now they brought in Pagano to try to prop this thing up. But like there's something warped in their culture and I don't really think it's scheme. But Royalt Humphrey, after they lost to Tennessee in the playoffs in 2019, called them chokers. He was right. He was right. And they're as. They're bigger chokers now than then because they built up all this experience and all this muscle memory and all these calluses and. And it is still a ugly, choking fourth quarter defense. So I think it's going to be a game with the Browns like this 13 point spread. Like, no, I think Flacco is going to. The two tight ends are going to go off. They're going to be in 12 personnel taking play action shots of the same Roquan Smith can't keep. They have Roquan Smith, $20 million to get five inconspicuous tackles a week. Like that's unreal. Most people pay for pass rush. They want a middle linebacker who cleans up the mess. It's something doesn't make any plays ever. They've got issues covering tight ends in downfield. That was an issue even when it was a legitimate defense with McDonald. I think they're going to win, but I think they're going to get further exposed and I think it's going to start. It's already tight sprinkler time around here. Like, I'm interested to see how this team responds. You know, other takeaways, like, I think Dallas might be a smidge closer to respectable than I think. I still think the Giants are going to defensively shut them down. I think that's a dead under game. Look, we all knew Mike McDaniel. We like I wrote about this in the Post. I don't know. It's probably seven weeks ago now. Like too many people told me that was a complete dumpster fire there for me to think. I wrote, he's not making it to Halloween. I don't know if he's making it to October 1st. Like, I just. Someone's got to wear this. And the owner is apoplectic and I think he might blow out. It's rare that you see a GM fired and especially that early in the season. But Chris Greer's had more than nine lives. He's had like 27 lives there. He's had like Chris Ballard lives times three. So I think that that could happen sooner than later. Like if Mike Vrabel goes in there and beats them like 10, 9, which is entirely possible. I think Steve somebody, either somebody's going to like sort of calm Stephen Ross down or Everybody's going to be like, yeah boss, we're not going to have anybody in our stadium the rest of the way unless we do so.
A
So I let me say a few things because you were sort of a runaway train, which I like very much. But one thing is booger McFarland yesterday on the PTI show said exactly what you're saying about the Baltimore defense. And I will say that, that you know, I was a little bit, not incredulous, but close to incredulous because for so many years I've just thought the Baltimore defense is a great constant. And now two of you who know something about football are saying, no, it's not. It stinks.
B
Even last year, right, when they benched two players and moved Kyle Hamilton back to free safety and just played a whole bunch of COVID two and four deep and kept everything in front of them to make their numbers at the end of the year look good. By Week 10, it was the worst passing defense in the NFL, whether they were in zone or whether they were in man. Now, unless there's a third option man on the moon that I'm not aware of, that's really the only way you can go. And they were dead worse than both. Now at the end of the year, you could look at those numbers and be like, you know, they got pretty good. If you run the numbers for the fourth quarter all season long it's a bottom five defense and you cannot be too many smart people like my buddy Bobby DePaul have told me over the years, you cannot be an elite defense if you are not an elite fourth quarter defense. Yeah, and their fourth quarter defense has been horse forever. And it's not just against great quarterbacks. Go look what Gardner Minshew's done to them in the fourth quarter twice. Go look what Sean Watson. Watson had one good fourth quarter in his career as a Cleveland Brown. Guess where it came? M and T Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens. With Baltimore playing with a big lead like, nah, nah, it's not a Super Bowl. And if they don't get a real pet Damian Clown. He should have been in that building when the team plane got back from Buffalo. Like every year they want to wait till September, October, November to address defensive shortcomings. So we'll see. I know it's one week, but it's not one week. It's like the 15th data point in a five year span that says there is something rotten with their culture on defense.
A
Okay, I was going to ask if the Chiefs should be worried or if the Lions should be Worried. But you mentioned Miami. My cousin Marilyn was panicked last week and sent me a series of texts and I said, it's one game. Relax, it's one game. Now you're saying no, it's not just one game.
B
Yeah, because it's like, it's like the Ravens thing. Like, it's when you book end it that way and you're already a team that has in the Ravens case, a fourth quarter choking problem. In the Dolphins case, not even being prepared. I'm surprised those guys made it to the team bus. Some of them like, some of them made it to the right airport. Like they're not prepared to play. And it's been a problem when they go on the road for Most of Mike McDaniels and they played a physical opponent. Like the Colts were like, we're going to run Jonathan Taylor till you stop. And like. So that's a bad matchup for them even on turf now. No, I think it's more than one game. It's, it's, it's a sign of impending doom for Mike McDaniel and I guess probably the GM. I think the Lions are going to pound Wilbon's Bears.
A
Yeah.
B
Like you want to.
A
We hope.
B
Yeah, I like, we will have. I will have some plays on that game coming up on. Want to bet? Yeah, I like, maybe they don't cover, but take it down to two and a half, attach it to like golf. 220 yards passing. I mean, that doesn't sound sexy. It'll get you plus money. Like, yeah, I got more work to do on that game. But I don't think, I don't think. Dang, the mighty Dan Campbell is losing that game at home to a bad Bears operation.
A
Do you think just quickly on this. Do you think Andy Reid's playing Philadelphia? This is a big deal game. Yeah, I don't think it's a must win. Not. You can't put Kansas City Chiefs in a must win. But do you think they'll look at their schedule, though?
B
Go look at their schedule the first seven weeks. It's a gauntlet. It's not must win. I mean, they're too good at finding ways to win. I mean, they just won 17 straight regular season games that were decided by eight points or less.
A
Yeah.
B
Until they lost in Brazil. And I would say that's not even a normal game. Like, so if we want to keep tracking that domestically, I will be. We'll see what it's like when they play games. I don't know. In this hemisphere, the NFL. God, Love them. Speaking of the moon, when's the first game on the moon? I'm dead. I hope I'm dead. I think it's a dead under game. I think Andy Reid is in triage mode. Talk to a lot of people about the Chiefs this week, writing about them at the Washington Post. I think he's got to go back and he's already been doing this at home. If you really kind of study, they're 18 and seven in the under the last 25 home games and they're eight and two to the under against NFC opponents. Right. Less familiar opponents. They couldn't run the ball against the Chargers. I don't think they're going to run the ball that effectively against the Eagles. But they have to have volume to keep that Eagles offense off the field. I think Andy Reid will be in keep it simple stupid mode. But look, no Rice and no worthy. That's their that they can't overcome that right now. Defensively, the Spags blitz more. Does he try to gamble to get big plays against an offense that eviscerated him in the Super Bowl? But the Eagles are coming back from Brazil. The Eagles were, I thought played it safe and relatively conservatively against the Dallas defense that I don't think is as good as spags. So I don't know who wins that one. My lean is the is the Eagles, but I think the unders to play there. Okay, jack it up a couple points. Jack it up a couple points.

Yeah, I mean he did. He took it to 11. Really? Although he's not actually on fire because he says he's wearing Parker's in the middle of the summer because of the shingles shot. That was a wow. James Carville next. And Jeff Ma right after James Carville. I'm Tony Kornheiser.

This is a John Sloop John B. Version. James wanted Sloop John B. As playing music, but he wanted the Beach Boys. We're giving him Blind Blake Higgs. Yes. With Sloop John B. A traditional song. James doesn't like this and wants the Beach Boys. We all want the Beach Boys. It costs a million dollars just the way it goes. We gotta give you something that's in the domain, the public domain. And at the moment, it's Blind Blake Higgs. And if we can find something else, if you want to sing it, we're happy to let you do it. Just so you know. All right.
B
I run too many people. My girl said my boy sounds like goose farts. I don't think you think I can sing.
A
This week's picks with James Carville and Jeff Maher, brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook. Make every moment more. You were 4 and 2. Nobody else was above.500. You were 4 and 2. You hit on all the pro games. You missed a couple of college games, but you hit on all the pro games. What do you got for us this week?
B
All right. Purdue at usc, Southern Cal. Yes, actually, Purdue's at home and they're getting 21 points. And I would. Purdue's not that good, but 21 is a lot. We barking like dogs today. I can tell you that right now.
A
21. And USC, where the coach is Lincoln Riley, who's under scrutiny. He is under scrutiny already.
B
And Purdue has 21 points.
A
Okay. Okay.
B
Next. Would I have this many dogs? We'll get a barking dog audio.
A
You'll get that.
B
This is what everybody's into. The great Eastern Michigan, Kentucky game. Take 40 over.
A
You want the over in that? The over. Okay. All right.
D
Okay.
B
And then New Mexico state is getting 10 at Louisiana Tech. Very seldom like New Mexico State, but this is one of the times Tech, David, has all played LSU last week and they couldn't have played any harder. And, you know, I think you're going to have a little bit of an off week. By the way, just for the reckon Oklahoma State might be as bad a college football team as I've ever seen.
A
Well, he got what he deserved. Mike Gundy, for mouthing off about Oregon and nil money. And they beat him down. They did.
B
They beat him down. And I. If I look at that team, the last games of last year and the first games of this year, Mike Gund is not long for this world.
A
Yeah. And he's been a good coach for a long time, but like 1 in 11. In his last 12 games, he's 1 in 11.
B
There's a underneath story we don't know, but a team just doesn't go from, you know, consistently being 9 and 3.
A
Yes.
B
You know, to go to 1 in 11. All right.
A
The points fairy. The points fairy can give you ten and a half on New Mexico State if you want it.
B
Yeah, I would take it.
A
Okay. That's what I figured.
B
We like those half. We collect them, we buy them.
A
What do you got in the pros?
B
Dangling party. Okay. The Browns travel to Baltimore to play the Ravens. Lamar Jackson and coming Ravens are going to be fighting mad after that catastrophe they had in Buffalo and therefore take the Browns and 12 points.
A
12 with Cleveland. Okay.
B
Yeah. That's too many points.
A
Yeah. It's a division game. Yeah.
B
The Eagles getting four at Kansas City.
A
Okay, take it.
B
Yeah, take the four.
A
Okay. Let me just double check that line.
B
We dogging out here.
A
All right.
B
And the Raiders are at home.
A
Sorry for. For the Chiefs. The Chiefs. Eagles games. We have the Chiefs getting one and a half. That's what we see. Would you have. You have the Chiefs getting one and a half at home? Yes. Philly. Philly giving one and a half. You want to get off that game?
B
Yeah, let me. Let me. Let me re. Look at it. Just, just let this one.
A
Because yeah, let's get off that game because that's enormous difference.
B
Okay, go ahead in the Raiders. What do you got? The Raiders three and a half charges.
A
Plus three and a half. Take the dog. All right.
B
And I'll see what's going on with it with the Eagles game. But for right now, let's just leave it off the board.
A
Did you. We did. You want to do the Falcons Vikings game? You would text me that maybe might be on your board.
B
I sent you Falcons, Falcons and Vikings.
A
Falcons getting four. You may not want it right now. It's okay.
B
Put that one in. Let's do the Falcon Vikings.
A
Okay, you want the Falcons. All right, that's good. So you want Cleveland 12, Atlanta four, Raiders, three and a half. And we're. We're in limbo on.
B
That. Might just leave that. Let's leave that.
A
Okay, good. So that's six picks. All right.
D
All right.
B
Okay.
A
All right. Good luck. We love you. We love you. Thank you. James. James Carville, boys and girls. And now through magic, and we will explain that we're going to go directly to Jeff Ma. All right, so. So we're going to talk to Jeff Ma now. And I have to. Under the. The rules of full disclosure, I have to say that this has been taped already. It was taped last night after the PTI show because Jeff lives in California and as I know, he will wake up at 5 to be on at 5:30 in the morning to be on the show. But it's crazy and if we can avoid it, we'll avoid it. So let's start with it. Jeff was 2 and 3 last week. Nobody. Carville had a good week, but nobody else had a good weekend. Carville bet games. Well, his pro games. He won his pro games. Yeah, he won all three pro games. It was really interesting last week that a lot of pro teams in the best games the loser actually covered. It was an interesting thing. But Jeff has a couple of things to talk about, and I want to talk about the first one and the second one. That is the impact of the kickoff rule. They move the kickoff. Why don't you explain how they moved it? Because now more and more we're going to see kickoffs. And I love that play.
D
Yeah, I mean, you know, there's this landing zone which is between the 20 and the. And the end zone. And if it lands in there, you have to return it. If you down it, you get it at the 20. If it goes in the end zone and you take a touchback, you get it to 35. Now, which is pretty outstanding. Right. And so if you have that ability to do that, most people will take that. So there's no longer just kicking it through the end zone or kicking it into the end zone. People are going to be putting in the landing zone more and more. We're going to see a lot more returns. In the first week, we saw over 75% of the kickoffs were returned, which is the largest amount of returns that they've had since, I think, 2010, week 17 of 2010. So it made a big difference. Obviously, it's only one week, so we shall see. What will be interesting to see is if there's more injuries, because one of the reasons they did this was because there are fewer injuries and there definitely were fewer concussions and fewer injuries on kickoffs last year, but that's also probably because there were just way fewer kicks. Run back. Now you get kicks being run back. Obviously you don't have people coming from, as, you know, as far distance and running, and so there's probably less chance of injury. But it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
A
Yeah, I'm going to take the other side of that because now they have the Both teams within 5 yards of each other, so they're not allowing you to build up a real head of steam. And I think that that will drastically reduce the amount of injuries. And I also think that the way this works now, because the blocking is a little bit easier because you're so close to the other team, I think we're going to see a bunch of runs that are sprung. I do. I think they're going to gain 30, 40, 50 yards on some runs more frequently than they did before. What do you think?
D
Yeah, I think. I mean, I think it's. We'll see. I mean, again, like, it's hard to know exactly, but I agree with you that the blocking should be easier to line up. Yeah, it's probably easier to be a little bit conservative also from a return standpoint and not try to give up, you know, try hard not to give things up because you're. Again, you're not running with the head of steam in the wrong direction if you get past.
A
Yeah. Let me get to the other thing that you want to talk about, and I'm not sure I understand this. Well, I think your note was that outside of two prime time games, the unders went 11 and 1, which is amazing to me. That's amazing to me. 11 and 1 going on the under. Is there a signal in this? Is it? Because it's the first week. Are people more cautious? How do you explain that? And why shouldn't I bet the under all the time?
D
Well, one, because it's a market, and markets tend towards efficiency. Meaning, like, people saw that stat and obviously, if there's some. Whenever you see something like this, especially in a small sample size, like one week.
A
Yeah.
D
I think the most important thing to understand is, is there a root cause for this? Is there a reason that you think that? Do you have a hypothesis about why this might happen? And, you know, what has changed between last year to this year? Well, the kickoff stuff has changed. So is that the root cause? Hard to say yes or no. Is it just that teams are rusty and because teams are playing, you know, like what has happened in the NFL over the last few years, the preseason has become even less of a. Of a thing. People do.
A
Yes.
D
We'll worry about injury.
A
Yes.
D
So are these offenses just rusty because they have zero reps and does it take them a little while to, you know, get going? There's some potential there that. That's true. I mean, I think that's a real paradigm shift that's happened in the NFL over the last few years where every single preseason becomes less and less important and less and less. They get less and less rep or fewer and fewer reps. So I think that could be real. But again, the problem is, is that markets tend towards efficiency. Everyone sees this. The bookmakers will adjust if this is real. And no, I don't. You can't just blindly bet under.
A
Yeah, but the primetime games went over. Is that.
D
Yeah.
A
What does that mean? Or does it mean nothing?
D
That's something. That's something that people have been saying for quite some time, and we talked about it a little bit on BET the process this week. Is there an underlying reason and there's some theory, you know, this is similar to how the Super Bowl a lot of times tends to go over, especially in the second half. And it's because, you know, at this point, teams, like, because they're on prime time, they know everyone's watching. Maybe there's more of an impetus to kind of like, keep trying to score, keep running up the stage, score, all that kind of stuff. Whereas in certain situations, maybe in non prime time, they, you know, they. They tend to get more conservative. Who knows? Like, this is a hard one because again, the primetime games, it's a small sample size.
A
Right, Right.
D
The narrative over the last few years has been that primetime games go over.
A
Okay, all right. Give us the games you want.
D
Okay. So I'm going to start in college. And there's two college teams that we talked about last week being maybe underrated because. And the theory here, we talked about this with Bill Connolly, was that these teams have a very strong NIL program because they've got Texas oil money. Obviously Texas has it. But the two that are interesting are Texas A and M and Texas Tech. They both had great performances coming out of the gate. And I actually like Texas A and m + the 7 over Notre Dame. You know, SP+ has them ranked pretty close to even. So even if you give Notre Dame some home field, this line should be much closer to 2 or 3. And then I like Texas Tech minus the 23.5 over Oregon State. Oregon State struggled last week. Texas Tech has been playing well so far this season. And again, this was a team that did a lot in the portal, has done a lot with nil. And theoretically, again, one of the things we're trying to figure out is how good are these players that transferred into these schools. And so is there a little signal in early performances that are strong. And again Texas Tech has looked good so far this season. So I'm going to take them minus the 23 and a half.
A
Last night on PTI, booger McFarlane said the same thing about A and M over Notre Dame. Said that that's an upset alert game. So you agree with him. What else? What would you like in the NFL?
D
In the NFL we're going to do. What do you guys have on the Giants and on the Bears?
A
I've got the Giants getting five and a half and I have the Bears getting six and a half.
D
Oh, wow. Okay. So I'm going to take the Bears plus the six and a half. I think this is an interesting Ben Johnson game. I think that, you know, you have a situation where he probably knows a lot about this team and knows how to stop them. And I would guess that he that advantage works better for him than it does going in the reverse. That that is purely speculation, but that is my guess.
A
Yes, he knows everything there is to know about Jared Goff and if anyone can stop him, he can. I agree with that. Totally agree with that.
D
And I'm, I'm going to still take another shot on the Giants. I know that that was one of my picks last week. Their defense played pretty well. Their offense is obviously not good and it's Russell Wilson. Kind of, kind of watched to see when Jackson darts can be playing. But I again, one of the things I think we have going for us is I think, I think The Cowboys overperformed a little bit against Philly. I think if this game had happened before that meaning, like, you know, everyone looks at what happens when they lose Micah Parsons and expects them to be much worse. I think there's just a little bit of extra points in this. In this line. So I'll take the Giants plus the five and a half.
A
Is that at Dallas, right? Yes, at Dallas. Okay.
D
That is at Dallas. Okay, Got another take a couple more to take the Dolphins mine. One over. Over the Pats, obviously, again, a team that I picked last week that looked terrible.
A
Terrible.
D
I just don't think that. I don't think the Patriots defense is very good. I don't think they're going to be able to get very much pressure on two, and I think he'll be fine. I still believe in Mike McDaniel, but maybe I'm. Maybe I'm crazy. And what is insanity.
A
You may be the last one on the boat. You may be. Yeah, yeah, you may be. Okay. What else?
D
A lot of room on the boat for me. And then I'm going to take Jacksonville plus the three over Cincy. We had Kevin Clark on a few years ago, and he talked about how Burrow struggles, and it seems like Burrow struggles always at the beginning of the year. And there's something about, like, his vision early on where he doesn't have quite the vision that he does, and for some reason he gets trained to do it throughout the season. We had this. It was based on what? Kevin had this conversation with Joe, and it does seem like every year he struggles at the beginning of the year, and then by the end of the year, they're humming. And so I'm just going to put a little pick on that, which is that he's still going to struggle a little bit. I think Jacksonville, as I mentioned, is a little bit underrated going into this year, so I'll take them plus a three.
A
We're going to actually give you a three and a half.
D
All right, perfect. We'll take it.
A
I will say this about Burrow, and I think Burrow is a great quarterback. The single statistic last week that shocked me the most was not anything Daniel Jones did or anything Geno Smith did or anything Aaron Rodgers did. Joe Burrow gained 113 yards passing in the entire game. That's unbelievable, Jeff. It's unbelievable.
D
Yeah. Not a lot.
A
No, no. He usually does that in a quarter. Does that in a quarter.
D
Yeah.
A
All right, Paul, you want to plug the most recent bet, the process, and then we'll Say goodbye.
D
Yeah. Rufus does an interview with a guy by the name of Chris, Chris Durkus, who is. I don't know if you follow any of these new prediction markets. No, but predicting markets are a big thing and they are. They are the newest way to bet. Maybe. Maybe one episode we can talk a little about this.
A
I don't even know what it is.
D
Incredibly interesting.
A
Okay.
D
It was like when we talked about prediction markets on Trump and things like that. You can bet on things like, you know, the election and the prediction markets are actually, like, happening a lot in sports now, and they're kind of taking over sports betting to some degree. So it's a. It's a pretty interesting space to look at.
A
You will explain it to me down the road. Thank you, Jeff.
D
Thanks, Tony.
A

I looked for you but couldn't find you. Maybe next year. This is so Wonderful. These are all these sorts of pictures. It's just really wonderful. It really is. From Elliot Olshansky, now in Del Mar, New York, not on Long Island. Last Tuesday night, the woman to whom I'm related by marriage and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary. I looked up and found that the traditional gift for a 13th anniversary is lace. So I sent a quick email and arranged for a video greeting from Chris Cilliza. Don't worry, I'm also getting her tickets to see Wicked when it comes to proctors and skills connected next month. When I played her the video, she looked at me and asked if I really got her an anniversary gift related to your show and that that was the worst idea she could think of. Little did I know that my own anniversary gift would be a t shirt from shop.tonycornheisershow shop.com. i didn't even know that that exists. Yeah, I mean, okay, great. Best regards from all but county, where I'm currently returning along with my fellow Little Ken Vestola, who agreed to do the driving if I bought his ticket. Little did we know it only cost me $5.11. Not a very good deal for him. But there were other people who drove further to the game. I guess that's one positive way to look at fabulous email. Dave Kroll. Not.
B
Not.
A
Not Dave Grohl. Not Dave Grohl, but Dave Foo fighters. Yeah. So, Mr. Tony, we made it to Lecheserie part four. I grew up and went to high school with Jason Smorla, gm, an unbelievable promoter. And we grew up with Jake Hafner's family. We had a great time. I included a couple of pictures. Please tell Jason and Jake to eat it. And there are a lot of pictures. This is so nice. Brandon Borzelli, Lebanon, New Jersey. For years we've listened to Reginald pick games. Usually Nigel would visit Reggie at the National Zoo, show him the game in question while the Simeon would produce a photograph for Nigel to interpret. We accepted that this process as a means to determine which team Reginald was taking. After all, who else but Bud Grant? Who else could Bud Grant in a. I'm sorry, what else could Bud Grant in a hot tub with Walter Mondale mean other than the Vikes by two. However, now we have come to learn Nigel believes Bruges is in Holland. Bruges in Holland. Maybe Nigel isn't reading the pictures correctly. For example, Richie Pettibone was born in New Orleans, played 10 years for the Bears, and had a cup of coffee with the Rams. How can we be sure his presence in a picture automatically means Washington? Next time Reginald produces a picture of green rolling mountains with John Elway and Nigel says Reginald picks Denver, it might actually be a picture of Lancashire and Reginald's referencing a Premier League game. And I think Brandon makes it does sense. That's a valid point from Jason in Burke, Virginia. I'm pretty sure I ask a variation of this question every year. When Reginald carries things like a wallet, phone or keys, where does he store them? Does he wear a jacket with pockets? Does he wear pants with pockets? I want to make sure I'm painting an accurate mental picture. It's always well dressed. From Eric Carlson in Morgantown, West Virginia, My sympathies to Steve in San Angelo, Texas, who has a still dead pumpkin patch. I, on the other hand, here in Morgantown have a volunteer pumpkin patch. Each November my wife and I separately our next door neighbor put our non carved pumpkins in the woods behind our houses for the neighborhood deer to eat. Part of this is in hopes they leave our bird feeders alone for a couple of days. Well, a month or so ago we were surprised to see a few big leaves sprouting from a vine near said feeders next to our deck. So much for not you know what ing where you eat deer. And now we have a giant pumpkin vine, not so replete with two growing pumpkins. I mean seriously, this thing is huge, has dozens of flowers and we're just getting two pumpkins. Part of me wishes none were growing because I'm worried this vine will choke out our intentionally planted hydrangea and viburnum. But with a toddler, there's no chance we're going to turn down the opportunity for her to pick a pumpkin in her own yard. And it shows giant leaves which are not unlike the giant leaves for the zucchini for the squash. Yeah, we never got zucchini. We got yellow squash and giant gourds by the way Buster sent me this. I saw Buster's potato purple potatoes. I also saw his yellow Yukon potatoes. Oh, I didn't see those. Oh, he's killing it. He sent it to me last night. Big harvest. Big harvest. Rob McLaughlin writes I. Okay, wait a second. That's the second page. Yeah, he's from Braintree. Oh, great tree and mass. No, but they'll never let me say I'm from Braintree. Well, I don't get it. Anyway, it's wrong. I walked into the office of the Massachusetts Senate president yesterday for a meeting. Waiting patiently to be called into his interior office from the entryway, I looked up and just started laughing. My boss non plus shot me a glare, but I couldn't help it staring back down at me. None other than Louise Gluck is a picture of Louise Gluck. Isn't that Nobel laureate? Turns out Ms. Gluck was a Cantabrigian of the Massachusetts variety, which makes her worthy of a place in the Senate President's office installation celebrating famous women from the Bay State. An unofficial wall of fame. It's a lovely picture. It is. It's very lovely. Lovely picture. Laughed out loud. Couldn't hold back hope. This is an elaborate plot by a little working in her office to elicit this note and expose some connective tissue. A haiku for Billy and Christie from Shad. Meet cute or cute meat.
