Tony Kornheiser
So this is my existential dilemma. The jacket is sent to me by espn. You know, they bought this jacket from me.
Ryan Reynolds
So it's already purchased.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, but, but, but I had to.
Ryan Reynolds
It's not like they sample to try.
Tony Kornheiser
No, but I had to pay for the, the alterations. Alterations. What should I do about that cinema bill? I don't want to do that. I'm just going to eat it.
Michael Wilbon
No, I think you just eat it.
Tony Kornheiser
You just eat it.
Chris
Right?
Michael Wilbon
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
I would take the tailoring receipt, tack it up behind you on PTI and just circle it with a Sharpie.
Tony Kornheiser
The Tony Kornheiser show is on now. I'm still planning on eating it. I'm still planning on.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, that's, that's the right.
Tony Kornheiser
I may change that plan, but I'm still planning on eating it. And we need to get in touch with Jeff Bradley. He's the director of tickets and sales at the tennis tournament. The D.C. tennis tournament, which is a big deal every year starts this week, doesn't it?
Michael Wilbon
I believe so, yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Today maybe may start today.
Michael Wilbon
If the rain lets it.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Venus Williams is playing. She is now 45 years old.
Michael Wilbon
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
We don't. How long do we expect her to be playing in it. One match. Do you want to see a.
Michael Wilbon
Make sure go see her in her first match.
Ryan Reynolds
Still a draw.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Oh yeah. And I think worth it. Oh, yeah, I think worth it.
Michael Wilbon
I haven't seen the list of people that are going to be there, but.
Tony Kornheiser
There'S some, some good. Francis Tiafo, Francis Teofo is there, I think. Em Radhakanu, maybe Navarro, I think is in it. Emma Navarro, I think so.
Ryan Reynolds
Jessica Gula, probably Jessica Pigula.
Tony Kornheiser
Is she in it?
Michael Wilbon
She's played there a number of times before.
Tony Kornheiser
So, yeah, it's a very good tournament. It's a preparatory tournament for the U.S. open. It's a very good tournament. It's run by my friend Mark Ein and I get invited every year and I never go. But, you know, maybe I'll talk to Jeff Bradley. I know a friend of mine who worked with me for a thousand years.
Ryan Reynolds
You can hop a ride with us.
Tony Kornheiser
Are you going to go to it?
Ryan Reynolds
We're hoping to. Got the booster seat for you.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, maybe I'll do that, sit in the booster seat. But I think Megan wants to go. I think Meghan should be able to go.
Ryan Reynolds
Like a trader for some tomatoes.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, yeah, you've got some great players. Daniil Medvedev, Tiafa, as you mentioned, Andre Rublev. I think Ben Shelton is going to be there as well.
Tony Kornheiser
Good player. Yeah, loves him.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, he's very exciting to watch. So, yeah, that should be. Should be fun.
Tony Kornheiser
Chris. Chris is with us today. Where were you the other day? You were on your way to Pennsylvania? Yeah, I was at last, Lake Ariel, which is right outside Hamlin. Okay. So the internship is ending this week. It's a fabulous internship, grueling process. You come when you want to come and I ask you to pick tomatoes. I asked Chris to go out and pick the tiny little current tomatoes today. How would you describe this internship other than an unbelievably idiotic internship? I mean, I don't think I know anybody else with an internship in media that has been done as much gardening as I have. Yeah, but you know, it's a.
Chris
It's a life skill.
Tony Kornheiser
It really. Well, you planted potatoes. Yes. We won't know for two or three months. We won't know if they come in. I mean, I just. I'm just hoping to get one or two potatoes and then next year go all in on potatoes. Oh, yeah, I'm hoping to get one or two. I think that's for the best because then if they don't grow, I'm States away. Yeah. Yeah. So.
Michael Wilbon
But always available to be recalled.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, 100. Yeah. Great internship. You just show up when you want. You don't actually do anything. All right, let me get to. Let me get to the Nats. As the Nats lose a series to the San Diego Padres, they lose the first game. They win the. They lose the first game in excruciating manner. Kyle Finnegan, just awful. Just awful. Right. They lose that game, then they win game two, which is very surprising to me. They got a good inning from Kyle Finnegan. They got some singles, Brady House and Lyle and. And the substitute catcher, the third string catcher, Drew Milius. Is that his name? Millis or something like that? I think C.J. abrams may have driven in a run and they held the fort. And then yesterday, now I am watching the British Open. Yesterday. The British Open is now Open Championship. The Open Championships, not the British Open. The Open Championship with the, you know, most fabulous golfer of the year. The championship golfer of the year. I'm tired of that phrase, by the way. Really tired of that phrase.
Ryan Reynolds
Caddy gets a special bib.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. And I'm watching. I'm watching and it's over. And I watch, I don't know, for five or six more minutes as Scotty Scheffler. I'm watching the progress of his child because every time he wins, he brings his child right onto the 18th green and he wins all the time.
Ryan Reynolds
You see the confidence of a dad over these, you know, this year and a half.
Morgan Pressel
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And you can see how this child is growing, you know, blonde curly hair and so on and so forth.
Ryan Reynolds
So I watched a great Nike jumpsuit.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, well, you know, this kid's getting everything paid for, you know, that's the way it should be. So I don't have to tell you that.
Ryan Reynolds
And the tailoring.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. So I watch a little bit of that, and then I just realized, well, what am I watching this for? What's the point? It's over. So I flip over to the Nats game. The first thing I look up, I look up in the top left hand corner because you always look for the score in the top left hand corner. And amount of pitches thrown. I'm one of those people. I care about the amount of pitches thrown.
Ryan Reynolds
What's the number that you set per inning?
Tony Kornheiser
15.
Ryan Reynolds
Exactly.
Tony Kornheiser
There's nobody out. And the number is 21. And it's Mackenzie Gore. And it says, I honestly look at the number of pitches first before I look at the score, the scores for nothing. 21 pitches, nobody out, for nothing. Padres. I have no idea how this happens. I immediately text with Chuck Todd and Chris Lizzo and I find out, walk, single, walk, home run. Bogarts. Xander Bogarts. Grand slam.
Michael Wilbon
I'm familiar with him.
Tony Kornheiser
Grand slam. It's four nothing. By the end of the inning, it's five nothing. And by the third inning it's eight nothing. And I. They're not going to win. They're, you know, I think the final score is 8:1. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. They're no good. And. And now we have reached that point because now it's after the All Star break. Your optimism is based on what happens immediately after the All Star break. Have they won three games? You say, oh, okay, you know, little optimism. Yeah. Now there's none. I have no confidence in the manager. None. I have no confidence in the coaching staff. None. The pitchers. This is Mackenzie Gore, who got rap.
Ryan Reynolds
All Star.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. I mean, Jim Hickey comes out to the man. I think to myself, you know, what are you going to really accomplish? I have no, I have no confidence in any of them. None. And so the text chain becomes morose. Becomes morose. I mean, it's like, good to see.
Ryan Reynolds
Chuck Todd's getting back into long form writing.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, Chuck Todd. And Chuck Todd writes something. 10,000 that I completely agree with. I completely agree with this. And I'm not. Well, I'm not Boswell. Boswell said in the first paragraph of a column the other day, if Mark learned on one, spend money, sell the team, it's like he just, he called him out, called out the Lerner family. So you sell the team. That's easy to do. It's easy to spend other people's money. Very easy to do that. But okay, I think a lot of people probably feel that way. And Chuck Todd said there should be a statement of some sort. And now I agree with this. I believe that Mark Lerner, who's the titular head of the family and, and who is most associated with the baseball team, more so than his sisters or his brothers in law, more so than his children. I don't, I don't know the children at all. Don't know them at all. But I think Mark should get up now. I don't think it's like if, if I were advising here, which I'm doing for free right now. I'm not saying that he should have a press conference because you can't control. I was in press conferences. You can't control what is being asked of you. And if you hit a real bump on what is being asked of you. That's all that's shown for the next two years. So I wouldn't do that. I'd say go on the broadcast, go on with the play by play guy and the analyst and say what you need to say. Say this is the state of the team. These are what our plans are. This is our commitment. I would do that. What do you think of that?
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, I would just say as soon as the, as soon as the idea of selling the team was mentioned, in my mind, I go, this family is already out. I don't need him to come up and say that. I need to say, where are we with the sale? Because nothing is going to get better until that happens again. I come back to just looking at, you know, we think about residential real estate. You put a house up, the market's not right for it, you keep doing price drops, eventually you're hitting rock bottom or you're going to try and take it off the market. And then you have questions as to what happened. Then you, you see it come back on. It's for rent. We are in that stage where this team is basically for rent, renting the manager, renting the gm, and you're looking at all the, you're looking at all the pieces that you have and we always come back to these young prospects and you don't want them to turn sour. And you are closely looking at some of these pitchers who showed great promise over these last two to three years. And you don't want the roof to go bad when it's being, you know, uninhabited.
Tony Kornheiser
It's unbelievable because it finally happened to mackenzie Gore, how often they give up runs in the first inning. There was a statistic yesterday, I think was Fransen and Coco after the game, something like, since, I don't know, June something or other, not fully two months, they've given up over 90 runs in the first inning. In the first inning.
Ryan Reynolds
Now, now for your general state of, you know, where you are with the Nats and baseball since the, since the team has been competitive, you have this addition of the wild card and you look at going back over the last six or seven weeks, they've played nothing but teams that are either in the playoffs. You look at Detroit, you look at.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, Milwaukee, Milwaukee.
Ryan Reynolds
And you look at teams who are right on the cusp when you have something like the Padres, when you have the Cardinals. So it is just, yes, it's what's happening elsewhere in baseball where there is a path to stay compet and to really push for Those final wild card spots that we've just not even had a chance to do.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't want the team to be ruined, you know, by bad coaching, bad managing, bad general managing, all of that stuff. I want the prospects to get better. I mean, you look at some of them, like Brady House, you say he's getting better, but you look at Dylan Cruz, hasn't played in three months. What happened? Did he leave? Is he outside the country? What happened to him? There was. There are no updates ever as to how people are.
Ryan Reynolds
Their pictures seem like the quarterback that comes up and then you have to be very careful when you bring him back to the starting lineup because you only get two chances.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Do you remember Josiah Gray was an all star? He hasn't pitched in over two years. You think he's ever going to pitch? Never going to pitch. And so I would like. I hope the team is not for sale because this is the same ownership group that brought a World Series champion here, you know, but do I think that they need to clean house of.
Ryan Reynolds
The ARP shirt sleeve? So there's that?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I think they need. I think they need to get rid of all their coaching staff to manage yours. I think they need to bring a whole new group in. That's what I think. And I. I'd like to see a statement to that, but we'll see. You might wonder why I haven't talked about the British Open. Because Wilbon's going to talk about it. Morgan Presley is going to talk about it. So I don't really need to talk about it.
Ryan Reynolds
It's a Ryder cup here. It's good to see the implications of all those American flags up the leaderboard and a certain backdoor top 10. When you think about Rory and Bryson.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
Let's just schedule that for Bryson.
Tony Kornheiser
Shambo deserves. Is there a reason he can't be on the team?
Ryan Reynolds
No, he's going to be. He's an easy pick.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Bryson DeChambeau.
Michael Wilbon
What do you get from like at.
Tony Kornheiser
78 or something like that? The first day plus seven and then shot in the 60s all the way through and finished in the top 10.
Ryan Reynolds
Top 10? 78, 65. 68, 64. Could have gone lower.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, just. I mean, he's. He was terrific. He was terrific. So also last night, Tom Jones, not that Tom Jones, sent me a text that he was watching a Billy Joel documentary, more than one part documentary. And I said, what's it on? And he said, hbo. So I clicked last night to hbo and you know how you press the Blue button and you say Billy Joel documentary. And then the.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
Gives you some choices.
Tony Kornheiser
Go up on the screen. So I, you know, so I watched.
Ryan Reynolds
Gotta make sure you have a good battery in the. In the clicker for that.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Yeah. Well, it also tells you battery dangerously low batteries in the house. Well, they tell you that you never.
Ryan Reynolds
Let it get dangerously, though. It's like gas for you.
Tony Kornheiser
It wouldn't want to have that. So I watched. I don't. I watched much of the first episode. I got really tired and I didn't want to watch any more. But I liked it.
Michael Wilbon
It's good.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, I don't know if it's good. I can only tell you that I liked it because I'm very familiar with Billy Joel and very familiar with where he grew up and. And, you know, and. And the sort of arc of his career. But I didn't know this thing that is the. The major person talking in the Billy Joel documentary first hour is his first wife. There are no. I'm. Billy Joel's going through a few wives. And it describes in detail the story of how they got together. She was the wife of his dearest friend in the group that he joined called the Hassles, which is one of his groups. And they fell in love and did nothing breaks up a group sooner than that.
Michael Wilbon
That could be a problem.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. That's not going to work.
Ryan Reynolds
And Bobby Hassell.
Tony Kornheiser
And she's in. No, it's not the guy from the Gnats. It's not him. Spelled differently, I believe. Spelled differently. The guy in the Nats is El. This is Ellie. As in Hassles. Don't hassle me.
Chris
Whatever.
Tony Kornheiser
She talks throughout the whole thing. And it's. The ex husband talks about the whole thing. Billy talks about the lights. Like, wow, I didn't know any of these things. I didn't know any of these things. It. It shows how he did Piano man, where he was and what was going on. Piano man is.
Michael Wilbon
Oh, it's a brilliant song.
Tony Kornheiser
Just such a great song. And. And they bring in other people just for 10 seconds who say, yeah, you gotta play Piano Man. Even somebody like Pink is talking about the fact. Oh, no, you gotta. You gotta have Piano Man. Like, everybody loves Piano Man.
Michael Wilbon
It's a great song.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. And. And it shows how it happened and the evolution of it. I just. I probably watched 45 minutes. It feels like Tom Hanks is the executive producer. Well, because I knew he had to be because it said at the beginning, Playtone Productions.
Michael Wilbon
Well, I said Wall, Playtone, Galaxy, Right.
Tony Kornheiser
Tom Hanks. So I don't know. I don't know if other people will like it if they don't go all the way back with Billy Joel as I do. But no, I watched it. I'll probably watch the end of the first one. There's at least one more. I don't know how many there are. 17, but Billy Joel is very active in it, you know, I mean, are.
Ryan Reynolds
These many episodes just broken up by eras, you know, 80s, 90s?
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know. I didn't know if there were other episodes. Like, I think I, I saw two pictures when HBO came up, I saw two pictures with Billy Joel. So I assume they're at least two episodes, but I don't know. Yeah, I'm not technically savvy and I don't know how to do that.
Ryan Reynolds
We can ask the clicker.
Tony Kornheiser
Can I ask the Clicker how many episodes? Oh, like the Clicker doesn't. It's not. We can't go back and forth. The clicker just repeats what I say. If I say, like, that's the only way I could find the British Open. I pressed the clicker and went usa. And so they. Then it showed up because I didn't know where. USA Today.
Michael Wilbon
It is a two part from what I'm saying.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. How long, how many hours is it? Like four hours.
Michael Wilbon
It does not say in this.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, so I watched it. All right. That's all I got. As I said, we have Michael Wilbon, who's going to be on with us next. We have Morgan Pressell, who I hope has played in those sorts of conditions in the British Isles. And we can talk about that. And that's the show. I'm Tony Kornheiser. Morgan Pressel
Happy New Year.
Chris
Yeah, baby.

Dan Byrne
You can talk about your iodine as if it were archaic, as if the instructions on the bottle were in Aramaic. But iodine is positively new compared a bottle banned from your home. I'm talking Mercurochrome. It stained your skin red. That was its special little onus. And it gave you mercury poisoning as a bonus. I bet Mr. Tony hasn't used it since he used a comb. Forget the iodine. Let's sing a Mercurochrome. The favorite antiseptic when they built the Astrodome. Now where, oh, where is my Mercurochrome?
Tony Kornheiser
Mercura chrome Great. Dan Byrne. Mercurochrome, which I used as a child and had red marks all over my body with that junk, that hocus pocus junk. And that phrase plays in Michael Wilbon. Let's start with the British Open. What. What were your thoughts as you watched it? Were you ever bored? Because Scottie Scheffler never let anybody in.
Chris
Well, not the first two days, no.
Tony Kornheiser
Right, right. Well, that was different.
Chris
Yeah. So, I mean, that's half the British Open. And so, no, I wasn't bored. And I had a horse in the race. I had Matthews Patrick, Northwestern zone.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Chris
And I was. I mean, to have. He's won one major, and. And to have him, you know, up in the top of the. Of the leaderboard two days was just, you know, we had a text chain going, and a lot of people. Tony, you were aware of it because David Israel was part of it.
Tony Kornheiser
Yep.
Chris
For those who are Northwestern alums, we were just proud beyond, you know, all reason. And he was just in it like that. And while he did finish, what, top five or six.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, he had a good tournament.
Ryan Reynolds
The new coach is working.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, he really.
Chris
He had a great tournament. And so that was. That was my. You know, that was the obsession I have, you know? Yeah. I mean, Scheffler Sunday was. It was boring. I wasn't bored. It was. It was interesting to just. I like greatness. I like to see greatness. And Scotty Scheffler has. He is. He is convincing me. I'm not a person who watches somebody do something for two years and says, oh, he's the greatest thing of all time. You know, I'm not that guy. I gotta have. I gotta have some more proof that somebody's that good and is gonna be that good, is gonna stay there and Sheffield is doing it. It's fascinating to watch, but I have to. I have to see. I'm not interested in proclaiming it. I love what I, you know, I watched after you and I talked yesterday, I watched Scotty Scheffler, his whole press conference, which was probably about, I don't know, 40 minutes maybe. I watched the whole thing live, which you can do now. You can see anything live with streaming. And at some point, it was great because Scheffler deflects everything. He. There doesn't seem to be a braggadocious bone in his body. And somebody asked him a very fair question about Tiger woods, and it was great. It was the one time where his face, you know, was in concert with an answer. And he used the word silly. He said, that's silly. And you could tell he meant it. And I loved that moment because it is silly, because, you know, I mean, Jordan Spieth was going to be this person after he won. Rory was this person after he won. These guys have multiple majors. Not Koepka so much, because Koepka didn't seem, you know, he still got more majors, and Koepka didn't seem interested in the rest of the tournament season. So Koepka never, you know, sort of got that kind of adulation. But I, you know, I found Scheffler more interesting. His round was not as interesting as his press conference because I got to see a little bit more of him and him just come out. He didn't deflect. He said, no, no, no, no. This is not. Stop, please. And I like that, because that's where I am. He is showing us his greatness. I'm not using Tiger and Jack. I'm not. I don't care what numbers say about 10, 41 day. I don't. I don't. I don't care about any of that. You gotta show. You gotta show me in any sport, not just Scotty Scheffler. I gotta see it in any sport. So. But the play. God, he's like a metronome. I mean, the way in the puts he makes that. The par saving puts he made yesterday were crazy. Just, you know, right in the heart, right in the middle. Long.
Tony Kornheiser
Yep. Six and seven par saves to keep.
Chris
People off of him.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, he never. It was never fewer than four shots, and it was often five and six shots. So the comparisons to Tiger are inevitable as time goes on if he continues to win like this. The number you're talking about is 1197, which is the amount of days that it took Tiger between winning his first major and his fourth major, 1197. And, you know, curiously, it's the exact Same number of days that Scheffler's had between his first major and his fourth major. He has two. Two this year that. You know when you get two in a year. You gave credit to Shoffley last year. A lot of credit. You said he was your Golfer of the Year, so I assume Scheffler is your Golfer of the Year because he's got. He's got two. And you got a tiger did it for 10 years, and Scheffler's doing it for three to four. So you cannot compare them yet. But this is what I'm looking for. Will you allow that he's beginning to walk down that road? No, no.
Chris
Tiger redefined a sport. Tiger redefined sport. Not just his sport. Sport. When people start dressing like Scotty Scheffler on Sunday. No, no, no, no. When there's shoes and clubs. When he redefines an industry. No. Why? It's why LeBron James is not Michael Jordan. No, no. When it happens, we'll know when he. And it may not happen. And it doesn't mean he's not great. If it doesn't, he can still be great. I mean, Rory's great. Rory, not Tiger. So Jordan Speed had a great stretch. Not Tiger. So Scheffler may get there.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, he may.
Chris
When he gets there, I'll entertain it until then. I love his answer.
Morgan Pressel
He.
Chris
Nobody said. I think the context was. Somebody mentioned the number of days you just mentioned.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. It was a big deal on tv. The days.
Chris
Yeah. And he said. He just frowned and said, that's silly. Tiger Woods. And he said, tiger woods stands alone. It's the only time I've seen Scheffler be definitive. He said he stands alone. What are you talking about?
Tony Kornheiser
Well, I mean, he doesn't stand alone because Jack Nicklaus actually has more.
Chris
Okay. But for him.
Tony Kornheiser
But for his generation. Yeah. He grew up watching tiger. Yeah.
Chris
At 30 years old, you could still. You could argue Tiger stands alone. Not based on the number of major victories, but on the. On the. On the recreation of that sport. You know, I'm sure there's a. You know, it was great when Shefford talked about wearing pants.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Chris
To the golf course when he was a little boy because he wanted to be a pro. I mean, that was a moment that was revealing. I like that. But, you know, he hasn't changed the industry. So, you know, I mean, Tiger did that, and it was more than 10 years. Even though the dominance. Dominant stretch was 10 years. Yeah. But Tiger went to. When did he win his. We was in 19. Right. So he won his first major in OS in 97. Right.
Tony Kornheiser
He was 91.
Chris
And when did Tiger win his last one? When did he win?
Ryan Reynolds
2019.
Tony Kornheiser
2000.
Ryan Reynolds
2019 and the first masters in 97.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
At the age of 21.
Chris
So who are we talking about? We're talking about more than 20 years.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, but there was a six or seven year period there where he had.
Chris
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Gotten in the accidents and all of that.
Chris
The dominance.
Tony Kornheiser
The dominance was 10 years.
Chris
But the brilliance of. The brilliance of a career takes a long time and. No, I'm not, I'm. I'm sorry. I'm not that guy.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, so let's get to something that's interesting to me, very interesting to me, that is the upcoming Ryder Cup. Keegan Bradley could put himself as a player. I, I think you're a lot. I think you thought yesterday that there's only three captains picks. I think there's more than that.
Ryan Reynolds
Six.
Tony Kornheiser
I think there's six. There's six. Six, six. So I'm going to throw out some names here. Like I never heard of Chris Goderup. I never heard of him until a week ago when he not only won the Scottish Open, but held off Rory to win it. Now I find out he went to Rutgers. He's a Jersey kid. His dad is a member at Pine Valley. So he comes from a golfing family and he just finished second in the British Open. Would you put him on the Ryder Cup? I would.
Chris
I mean, I got to see. I got to see a list and so I got to see a list. Six is a lot.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. But I'm going to give you. I'm going to give you three people that we need to talk about. Four people. Here are the four people. Harris, English, Bryson, DeChambeau. Yeah, Chris got her up. And Windham Clark. Take him in any order you want. Would you put them on?
Chris
I probably put them on without. I'm not putting Windham Clark on. I got a. There's more I have to know. He's not automatically going on. Not automatically.
Tony Kornheiser
He broke a bunch of lockers. You can't do that.
Chris
Well, you could do that. I'm not. What I said is, I didn't say he's going on.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Chris
I said he's not automatically going on, as a matter of fact, is what I said.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Chris
So there's a lot to consider with him. Got her up. Is in a position that's a little more, a little stronger than Windham Clark. But I got other guys. I don't. Again, I don't know who's qualifying automatically.
Ryan Reynolds
All right, the automatic qualifier is currently in order. Sheffler, Xander, J.J. spawn, Russell Henley, DeChambeau and Harris English.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, DeChambeau is.
Chris
DeChambeau is already in.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, he's in. He's in. Number five. And the first couple out. Justin Thomas, Colin Morikawa, Ben Griffin. Keegan's all the way at 10.
Tony Kornheiser
I would definitely. I'm glad DeChambeau is qualified because he just rocked the British Open after the first day. He did.
Chris
Yeah, he did. He did. I didn't realize he was automatic. So that's Michael. That's good. That's good. It's good to know those names, and it makes it a little bit easier, I think. Got her up. Goes on. Keegan Bradley would be an interesting one. It's his. I don't know how much input there will be from the lords of you know of golf to say, Keegan Bradley, put yourself on, or Keegan, don't do this is too hard. You. You need to be the captain, and you're not Tiger woods, and you don't need to play and be the captain. So I think that, you know, that that's a. That's a. I'm not gonna call it dicey. It's not dicey. It's just fascinating to see whether or not he will do that. But got her up is really fascinating. Like you.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Chris
You're looking at it and going, who is he? Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. And Harris English. And if you gave me 100 choices, I would not have come up with Harris English. That he finished second in the PGA and second in the British. I would never pick him. Would you, Mike? Never.
Chris
Yeah. Yes. He's had a great summer.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Chris
I mean, I don't know that there's. We leaving anybody out.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know. I mean.
Chris
I mean, that's the. I mean, you have to sit down and look at it with not six names, but 15.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Ryan Reynolds
Right. So you look at Patrick Kelly's in 14, and then gets more complicated. Somebody like Lucas Glover, who's been playing very well and has history of.
Tony Kornheiser
Beth Page Black, he won the Open.
Chris
There, and Beth Page Black. And who do I think might be. And this doesn't. Doesn't come with FedEx points or any of that, who might be a bulldog, who may be a lion in the room, who may be one of those people that, you know, for a couple of those events, was that stupid Patrick Reed, you know, Captain America might provide that to a team that's always looking for a spark that Usually doesn't have it.
Tony Kornheiser
What about Tom Kim Field and.
Chris
Okay, yeah. And so. So the answers are do not lie for me and simply what place they finished in the majors.
Tony Kornheiser
I agree.
Chris
So. So there's, there's a whole lot to consider. But got her up. He's certainly in the. He's in the conversation, man.
Tony Kornheiser
And I never heard of him. I never heard his name.
Chris
People. People come out of nowhere and do amazing things.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. All right. All right. I'll talk to you later.
Chris
All right, Joe.
Tony Kornheiser
Be good. Michael Wilbon, boys and girls. We'll do more with the British Open with Morgan Pressel when we return. I'm Tony Kornheiser.

The Tony Kornheiser Show.
Tony Kornheiser
This is Philip Martin, who writes sincere thanks. Since my music has been played on this stinking show, I've been overwhelmed with attention from Littles, who seem to kind of like my work. So I'm sending along another track for you. Audrey Hepburn Disappears, which is a speculative narrative that stems from a rumored trist between Billy Wilder and Hannah Arendt in the Polo Lounge, the Beverly Hills Hotel, circa 1960. I'm planning to put it on my next album, which I'm tentatively calling Songs for English Majors. Oh, and it's nice to hear Ann Hornaday in the show. We've never met, but she once said nice things about me at a film festival. And I think she's about the best film writer out there these days. All the best. Philip Martin again. This is called Audrey Hepburn Disappears. It's lovely.
Michael Wilbon
It is.
Tony Kornheiser
Michael, if people like Mr. Martin want to send us their music, how do they do it?
Ryan Reynolds
Send us your music by emailing it to jinglesonycornisershow.com plays in our friend Morgan.
Tony Kornheiser
Pressell, who was a professional golfer of consequence and now does television work. And we need to talk about the British Open from the perspective of somebody who has actually played these kinds of courses, or I assume you have played in the British Isles. Yes. Morgan.
Chris
Oh, hey.
Morgan Pressel
Yes, definitely I have. Love it. I love playing over there.
Tony Kornheiser
So where have you played? Where have you played Lynx courses?
Morgan Pressel
Oh, yes, you know, played some of the best links courses in Scotland and England. Have also played in Ireland. Have definitely. We play quite a few of the similar courses as well, like St. Andrews, Royal, Litham, Turnberry. I'm trying to think. I've played so many Troon. Troon was amazing. Just such a different style golf. And I would say I didn't always love it. I can't lie. When I first started going over there, I didn't understand it and I really. I really struggled. But eventually, after a few trial and error situations, finally kind of felt like I figured out how to play Lynx golf and definitely towards the end of my career played much better on those style courses.
Tony Kornheiser
So this is, I guess, what I want to start with on Thursday and Friday, particularly on Friday. Now, the weather was beautiful over the weekend and the courses are sort of defenseless against really good players when the weather is beautiful. But on Friday there was so much rain. There's not an American tournament. There's just. It's not possible that they wouldn't have had a weather delay. Right. That was not possible. And yet they play there. And Morgan, if you start at 8 in the morning, you know, and somebody else starts at 2 in the afternoon, it could be an entirely different golf course because of the changeability of the weather. Is. Is that fair?
Morgan Pressel
Oh, yes, it's fair. It's just part of the luck of the draw. Sometimes you get on the good end of the draw and sometimes you get on the crappy end of the draw. And it is true. I mean, those courses are designed to withhold the weather, the rain, but everything that it throws, I mean, we did, I think one year at Hoy Lake Royal Liverpool have a wind delay because it was so outrageous that the golf balls were moving on the green, really. But for, yeah, for the most part, I don't know that we've ever really had too many delays at a British Open like that just because the golf, I mean, they slow the greens down to the slowest greens you play all year just in anticipation of extreme winds. And it's just. You just have to be really, really creative. You have to be really patient. You might get some crummy bounces just because of the moguls and the undulations of the golf course. You end up at a pot bunker and a crummy lye. And you're just like, oh, what is happening? But the weather is a huge part of it. And I always used to joke, like, the first few times I went over there, I'm like, who in the world would come here on a golf trip for fun? Like, this is miserable playing in this weather. I got all the rain gear. I'm freezing. It's coming sideways. You can't use an umbrella. And it takes a special type of golfer to learn to embrace it, which I eventually kind of did. You still don't love it, but you learn that you have to.
Chris
You.
Morgan Pressel
It's just part of winning over there. You have to embrace it all.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you. I mean, Americans who go there for the first time, can you tell they're there for the first time? Because do they say things like, what are we doing here? How can you play in this?
Morgan Pressel
I can speak for myself. I definitely did. I would say it took me a good five or six years over there to even understand the difference in the nuance on how to play. And. And, I mean, I went from, like, truly despising it, like, struggling to get off the tee in the sense of mentally more than anything. I was just like, ugh, this is just awful. And then you. It just. I mean, you think about, of course, like, an incredible champion like Tom Watson, who won how many times, you know, he embraced the elements. That's how you mentally win. That's how you are somebody like Scotty Shoveler winning by, you know, four or five shots. I mean, he just mentally persevered through the elements, through the tough shots that he had. I mean, think about that double bogey he made on 8 yesterday. It's such a mental test. And it's. And it's also just the way the conditions change around the courses is so dramatically different than anything anybody in the United States would play. So, like, you may have a bunker that is so far out of reach off the tee, you're like, why is this bunker here? And then all of a sudden, the next day, the wind switches and you're suddenly in the bunker. And if you don't have that course management skill and the ability to dissect the golf course, especially with a good caddy, with your caddy, you could end up in a lot of trouble if you're not prepared for the weather switch.
Tony Kornheiser
So I was wondering if we could quantitatively say, if the weather gets bad, how many strokes that cost someone. In my mind, I said, it's got to cost two to four strokes. But then I look at Scheffler. And it didn't cost any strokes. It didn't cost any. You know, how great is he?
Morgan Pressel
That just shows how much he gains to the fields, because I would imagine for the field it's probably two to four strokes. And obviously it depends on the severity of the weather, but there's no question it gets much, much tougher. And so that just shows how incredible of a player he is in when faced with the elements. And a lot of times I do feel like the best players in the world not only mentally rise to the occasion, but they enjoy the challenge of the creativity that weather fight forces upon you. You're forced to really be much more in the moment. You can't think further than what's right in front of you because you have no idea what's going to happen on the next tee. You're so forced to be focused in your bubble. And I think the best players in the world really thrive in that environment of staying so super focused and so on track with what is happening right in front of them. And how do I get. You know, how do I execute this shot and then I'll get to the next shot and I'll think about it when I get there. And a lot of times, so many of us futurize or even in bad weather. When can I get off the golf course?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Yeah.
Morgan Pressel
What am I done? How can I get out of here? And, you know, the best players in the world, like. Like Scotty, of course, just really, I mean, to be able to not lose shots through that incredible stretch of weather, I mean, that's just his mental fortitude.
Tony Kornheiser
So I'm watching it yesterday, and, you know, I have enormous respect for Scheffler. He hits two par saves on six and seven, or they were at least 20ft in both cases. He doubles eight. He does that thing which I do, just leave the ball in the sand and doubles eight and then comes right back with a birdie. And in those four holes, I think to myself, this guy's great. He's just great, right?
Morgan Pressel
Yeah. I mean, I think you saw. He showed quite a bit of emotion when he made those two par putts. And putting's kind of always been a. I don't want to say Achilles heel because he's the best player in the world, but if there's one part of his game that statistically has maybe been not as strong, certainly as his ball striking, he's a. He's a professional, efficient ball striker. But his putting, and that's been something I always say, like you really, to win major championships, you have to putt. You have to make those clutch putts down the stretch. I mean, think about Tiger's careers. Basically putting real highlight. He's one of the greatest putters ever. But it's so for him to make those two par putts with that big of a lead. He knew how important that was because that was an opportunity where he maybe could have given some shots back to the field early in the round and made them think that they had hope. And then of course, he did that on 8. That was so uncharacteristic. He's such a. He plods his way around the golf course better than anybody. And that was. I was listening to him talk about it actually this morning on Live from and he was saying that, you know, that was just. I got a little greedy. I thought it was an upslope. I thought I could even get to the green and obviously, you know, I thought too much and maybe with a big lead, let that get a little bit ahead of him, which we don't often see him do. But he's like, you know, we knew what we did. We put it behind us and we stood on the, we stood on the next tee and let's make birdie. And that's exactly what he did. And his bounce back stats are amazing. And that's just, just that ability to not only not futurize, but not dwell in the past. And I don't know if I've ever seen somebody so comfortable with a big lead consistently. It's not easy. He makes it look like a walk in the park. I mean, people get, people get tight, people get stressed, people get anxious because the only thing that can go wrong is you can lose when you have such a big lead. And he just looks so stoic and so composed and continues to hit perfect tee shot after perfect tee shot to put him especially down the stretch. I mean, those tee shots he hit on the last handful of holes were just perfection. And it's amazing.
Tony Kornheiser
It's very dangerous to start comparing people. And obviously the comparison is going to be to Tiger woods. And Tiger woods is a phenomenal golfer and Scottie Scheffler in three years has been great, but Tiger, like for a 10 year period was unbelievable. He was winning half the tournaments that were played. I mean, but is it, are we on that road at least? Is he on the road to Tiger? A lot of people get on the road and jump off, including Rory McElroy and Jordan Smith. Is he on the road?
Morgan Pressel
Nothing is guaranteed in sport. You Got to play for it all you can. Nothing is guaranteed. You never know. You know, of course, injuries come up and. And just outside factors start to come into play. But he seems to have the best perspective of anybody, you know, and he was pretty deep in his perspective this week and talking about kind of what it means to him and how much his family means to him, and of course, he wants to win and he's super competitive, but at the end of the day, you know, it's all about kind of his family and the support that they give him that lead him to these moments. And, you know, he was very deep in, what does it mean? Why am I here? Why am I doing this? Those big questions that we kind of all ask ourselves. But for him to mention that in a press conference when he usually doesn't kind of let people into his mind was really interesting. But. But I just. He said something yesterday in his press conference afterwards that he goes. He goes. The comparisons to Tiger, you know, something like, oh, they're flattering, but, like, I'm a quarter of the way there. I've won four majors. Like, let's not put the cart before the horse here. But, you know, every single one that he does win, especially in such dominant fashion in such a short span of time is going to only make those comparisons louder. And it will be interesting, as those comparisons do continue to grow, if he will be able to continue to stay so humble and so stoic and not allow those outside factors to affect you. I mean, I think we saw what kind of those mental barriers that people go through with Rory trying to win at the Masters, right? And then all of those emotions coming out on 18 when he finally did. And, you know, he's been trying for how many years? 11 years. And, you know, outside pressure can get into people's heads, so it'll be interesting to see what. And I think the answer is, what are his real goals? What does he really want to accomplish? And I don't think he's ever really explained that in the sense, like, does he want to catch Tiger? Is that something that is so important to him that it. That he will think about that every day for the rest of his life? I don't know. You know, think about, like, Tiger wanting to catch Jack. It's. It'll be interesting to see especially how the next couple years go. I mean, the chance to win the Grand Slam next year at the US Open, and. And whether he will get that done, how long that will take him, if it takes him as long as it took Rory how will that mentally impact him?
Tony Kornheiser
I'll get you out of here on this. You do broadcasting now. Scotty Sheffield, that was his tournament to lose. I mean, he was up by so many strokes. It was not dramatic. I watched it because I like watching it, but it was not dramatic. When you are broadcasting something like that, where the only drama is so far down the road because the guy's got to give up four or five shots to even make it competitive, how does that affect broadcasting?
Morgan Pressel
Yeah, I think you just. You have to lean into the greatness. When it's somebody like Scotty, there's no question. Of course, we all want drama. We all want the excitement. We want. We. I think everybody secretly, in the back of their mind, one, knew that Scotty was going to pull it off because that's just what he's proven to do time and time again. But two, we're hoping for a little bit of a Rory push.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Morgan Pressel
To really put some pressure. And, you know, of course, being in Northern Ireland, add that excitement, add that drama, and that never materialized. And there's no question, in terms of drama on a telecast, it doesn't quite lend itself the same way coming down the stretches as I'll go back to Rory Masters back nine, which was the most stressful nine holes of golf I've ever watched, probably he's ever played and most of us have ever seen in terms of drama, but you have to just realize that you are watching such greatness, and how do you tell that story properly and how do you give it the justice that it deserves without hyperbole in all of the tiger comparisons and all of these other things? Granted, some of them are warranted and we're on that track, as we mentioned, but how do you really just explain to the viewer that you are truly watching the start of complete greatness?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Morgan, thank you so much for being on. Thank you. Thank you. We'll have you on again to just babble with us. We like this. Thank you, Morgan.
Morgan Pressel
Thanks, Tony.
Tony Kornheiser
Morgan Pressel, boys and girls. We know her uncle, right? Her uncle's a doctor in the Cleveland Clinic, I believe. We will take a break. We will come back with email and jingle. I am Tony Kornheiser. Gatorade is the number one proven electrolyte blend designed to hydrate better than water so you can lose more sweat and raise your game. Gatorade, is it in you? My kids inheritance soon would be gone. Well, I changed the name. Some call it lame. We called it Chatter. I'm old, but I'm home right now I'm at Uncle Benny's table. We survived somehow. Well, it's been five years but it's funny how I'm still paying for the plumbing. So let me quote my spouse tongue. You flush the mouse. That's Joe Arrow. That's as brilliant as we've ever had.
Michael Wilbon
Isn't that great?
Tony Kornheiser
That is just fabulous.
Michael Wilbon
Thanks Joe.

Yes. Before I get to that, I have some information I want to give you. Dylan Cruz is very close to a rehab assignment. They look for him to come off the was the il. I always said I want to say DL. Yeah, it's always early August. So not that far.

Michael Wilbon
Yeah, those are bleak strain. They kill you. Also the Billy Joel documentary. Each episode is about two and a half hours.

Ah, it just was going on. Yeah, I had to go to sleep.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, you gotta break that one up. Okay, but. But bagel sandwiches today from Bethesda Bagels. We are always good by Chris.

Before we get to the mailbag, let me just say, is she really going out with him? Well, there she is. Let's ask her. Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing? Jim must be great riding him. Is he picking you up after school today? By the way, where'd you meet him? I met him at a candy store. It's just great. It's the Shangri La. Come on. Produced by Shadow Morton. Parking on Wisconsin should be fine in the middle of the day, but I'm sure Michael could make it easier on you by suggesting to me right on 34th street at Amy Carter's alma mater Hardy Middle School for free two hour parking. Sure, leave yourself some time for some lively discussion about different styles of Rigo suits and other famous clients from Brendan steenburgen in Columbia, Missouri. I was just catching up on the July 16th show and am I crazy or does Doug Ferguson sound exactly like Pat40. I couldn't figure out why I was listening to 40 talk about Scotty Scheffler's Socrates moment instead of thrashing the ncaa. Also, it's always good to hear from Spudster. Only Spudster. I love that. Finally, I recently appeared on the Paul Feinbaum show on the SEC Network See attached photo to discuss Mizzou football. Does this count as a David Aldridge moment? Yours in Neosporin, Brandon Steenbergen. Wow. Congratulations.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, well done, Brandon.
Tony Kornheiser
Congratulations, George Melaye. Our boy Journalism won a thrilling Haskell Stakes Grade 1 at Monmouth park on Saturday. Journalism ran down Gosker just as he did in the Preakness. The Haskell is a win and you're in qualifier for the Breeders Cup Classic. The Breeders cup championships take place October 31 to November 31 at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, California. Jockey Umberto Rispoli loving on his fleet footed steed after the race and he sends a picture and that's very, very nice from Alex Lau in New York City. Scottie Scheffler's commanding win in the British Open and vulnerable interview answer about his lack of fulfillment from golf made me think he must use this quote from Good Will Hunting an awful lot with other golfers. You know, easy this is for me. Have any bleeping idea how easy this is for me? This is a bleeping joke and I'm sorry. You can do this, I really am because I wouldn't have to bleep in golf and watch you scramble around and bleep it up. Just wonderful. It's Matt Damon. Yes, Matt Damon Matt Damon's first movie, right?
Michael Wilbon
I believe so.
Tony Kornheiser
So great. P.S. maybe if Scheffler had used iodine for his ravioli injury instead of Neosporin, he'd already have five majors instead of just four. We love Alex Loud. Dennis Bounce, Redmond, Washington what's with this argument about iodine versus Neosporin? The better way to treat certain cuts or scrapes is an ounce of whiskey on the wound and 2 ounces of whiskey down the throat. You'll be cured or you won't care. Rubbing alcohol is better than anything. I don't happen to have rubbing alcohol, so I would just use Johnnie Walker Blue. I know it's too pricey, but I would just use it.
Michael Wilbon
By the way, I'm seeing this Matt Damon's first movie appeared to be one you like. Mystic Pizza.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, is that right?
Michael Wilbon
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Yeah, I did like that very much. Jeff Alexander that May be Julia Julia Roberts first movie. That may be her first movie. Jeff Alexander, Salinas, California Iodine is a common staple in my house as I use it to sanitize my brewing equipment before brewing up some beer. The woman to whom I'm related by marriage is a nurse, and she comments how the house smells like work whenever I am using the iodine. From Brandon Borzelli in Lebanon, New Jersey. Video cameras caught your doctor's visit regarding your dog bite and have just now been available on the Freedom of Information Act. A brief relating of the tape follows below. You're in a large room surrounded by a number of people. They could be nurses, students observing, or even some sort of audit. It's unclear. What's more, they are not wearing traditional medical garb. Strangely, you are sitting at a table in a suit with a microphone in front of you. The man across from you asks if you'll be sworn in, an odd request, but you play along. Next, there are a series of questions regarding an olive oil company centering on some family, one you've never heard of. They mention New York a lot, so of course you assume this is all normal. Then come some accusatory questions about your treatment of the dog bite. The questions flow from a number of individuals. This begins to look like an interrogation. The questions intensify when they begin to ask about your usage of Neosporin. A man later identified as Willie Chichi whispers something inaudible into your ear. You suddenly burst out with iodine. Yeah, that's right, iodine. The family used a lot of iodine. The panel was unamused. As you lean further back and you see it smiling Devilish green Godfather reference, Tim Cree, Ford Collins, Colorado. Just piling on. I donate plasma twice a week and they always rub a wet stick of iodine for 30 seconds around the area they're about to insert the needle. Yes, they time it before taking my draw as it prevents infections and also kills bacteria at the puncture site. Neosporin is the devil. So if a Subaru driver is making a Neosporin delivery to the Cigna pharmacy, I guess they must be triple cursed. From Patrick Sitter in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When you die from a Neosporin overdose, could I have the lavender jacket? I'm gonna wear it next week. I'm gonna wear it. Patrick Ferguson from Binghamton. Right From. It's about Sunni Binghamton. When Snoopy used to kiss Lucy, Lucy would rant and rave and call out, get me hot water. Get me disinfectant, get me some iodine. Even Charles Schultz knew the power of the substance. Also, in the glorious year 1981, I was on the campus of SUNY Binghamton. We were there for the Region 1 Cup tournament. After winning the West Virginia Under 14 Soccer State Championships 5 0. We really thought we were ready to take on the powers of the Northeastern states at the region one hosted at SUNY. We lost to Virginia 21 nothing. California tumbles in this. Into the sea. That'll be the day I go back to Annandale. Steely Dan. It's a great song and from Glenn. Just wanted to let you know that I boiled chicken this morning. Eat it, Kevin Brown. If you're out on your bike tonight, everyone, as always, to wear white I.
Chris
Go from Marblehead to Revere.
Tony Kornheiser
Want to talk real customers?
Chris
Kid, that's me. I'm like the mayor of Duncan.
Dan Byrne
You can talk about your iodine as if it were archaic. As if the instructions on the bottle were. Were in Aramaic. But iodine is positively new Compared to a bottle ban from your home. I'm talking Mercurochrome. It stained your skin red. That was its special little onus and it gave you mercury poisoning as a bonus. I bet Mr. Tony hasn't used it since he used a comb. Forget the iodine. Let's sing of mature chrome the favored antiseptic when they built the Astrodome. Now where, oh where is my chrome?
Tony Kornheiser
