Previously on the Tony Kornheiser show it was a salad.
Michael Wilbon
You had a rocket crazy salad to.
Tony Kornheiser
Begin with, two different pastas including spaghetti and meatballs and a pepper pasta and then chicken parmesan. It's really good.
Guest 1
That's outstanding.
Tony Kornheiser
Really good. But I don't want to talk about the tgl. This was the last regular season.
Michael Wilbon
Last of the regular season.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, tgl. As if anybody knows there was a regular season. As if anybody knows it.
Michael Wilbon
At least they have a consistent schedule starting at 3:00. Sometimes the Tony Kornheiser show is on.
Tony Kornheiser
Now. We have to start with an email of sorts. It's an email of sorts. Our people contact us with emails, but some are specifically for the show and some are specifically about something that the emailer did nine years ago or 39 years ago. And then some are offers. The offers, of course, are the best things. We like the offers absolutely. More than anything else, the offers. This comes from Anastasia Zagas who writes we're big fans of the Tony Kornheiser show and your incredible career. From your sharp sports commentary to your always entertaining stories, we Also couldn't help but hear about your latest uninvited guest, the garbage can mouse that mysteriously disappeared and how you called in Adcock for backup while the pros took care of this one. We'd love to make sure that next time you're fully prepared to handle it yourself. At Victor, we've been outsmarting mice for over a century, offering everything from classic wood snap traps, the OGs of rodent control, to live catch traps, value added traps, electronic traps, and indoor outdoor repellents. Because once you see one mouse, you want to make sure you never see another. Yes. As a token of appreciation for keeping us entertained, we'd love to send some Victor merchandise along with a variety of our best rodent control solutions. No strings attached. Just a small thank you from us to you. Let us know what type of solution interests you. And we'll send a customized package down destruction. A guy here sitting there with an axe. We'll send over a customized package to help your home stay rodent free. Help keep your home rodent free. You can learn more about our brand history, company values and product offerings at the links below. Excuse me. And one of them is Victor brand website. One is Woodstream corporate website. Then they're on Facebook and they're on Instagram. Isn't that nice? That is.
Michael Wilbon
I did not expect the turn about three or four sentences. I thought there's going to be more of an ask. Victor is the. They are the OG of rodent control, the apex predator.
Tony Kornheiser
Is that right?
Michael Wilbon
And when you get those, the thick Victor original mouse traps, the ones that your AD Cox uses.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Oh, they use them. Ad Cox uses.
Guest 1
Oh, so this is going straight to the source.
Michael Wilbon
Those are not the ones that you get at the, at the local Safeway. Those are the. Those are the big.
Tony Kornheiser
That's great. So great. Thanks to Anastasia for that.
Guest 1
And Anastasia screams in vain.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, we will. Right. We will, in fact get in touch with you.
Guest 1
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
And by we, I mean Nigel.
Guest 1
Did they. Did they mention ice cream?
Tony Kornheiser
Anyone here didn't mention any ice cream. Wish they'd mentioned ice cream. They had not mentioned ice cream.
Guest 1
Disappointing.
Tony Kornheiser
So I, I have like a question. I haven't brought this up before. We're having people over for dinner tonight. I. I should say who. Right? Yes.
Michael Wilbon
You ruined our evening plan. So. Yes. Get it out in the open.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. So we're having.
Michael Wilbon
We are pivoting and we're gonna invite the same couple over.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, we'll all come over. So we're having the socialite and Nancy come over for Dinner. Because, you know, Carol said she would cook. That's a 50. 50 shot.
Michael Wilbon
You got to outsource this.
Tony Kornheiser
Carol's one gonna cook salmon.
Guest 1
Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
Nancy likes salmon. We all like salmon. Carol's gonna cook salmon. Salmon and asparagus and salad. It's gonna be okay. If it isn't okay, we'll just grab Michael and say, come over here and fix this.
Michael Wilbon
Do you have greens for a little salad?
Tony Kornheiser
We have some stuff, but here's the thing. I have this Beaujolais wine that I like a lot. That's all I buy now is this Beaujolais wine, but it's $25 wine. It's not really great wine. I probably have. I don't probably. I have some good bottles of wine. Alan, to my knowledge, is not that much of a wine drinker. Alan drinks Dewar's, drinks Scotch. I don't have doers. You know, I've got Johnnie Walker Blue, but I don't know. When people like a certain thing, that's the go to. They like a certain thing. But I'm wondering, should I open up a really. I have some really good bottles of wine. I've got a couple of cake bread cellars still left over that.
Michael Wilbon
Do you have any of the whites left?
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know. I haven't looked.
Michael Wilbon
Okay. With. With the salmon, I would encourage you to at least have a white that's ready if they don't want to open.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I don't have any white. I don't know.
Guest 1
I'm trying to think what you pair with salmon. Like a vanilla wine, would that be?
Tony Kornheiser
I don't think so. I don't think vanilla.
Michael Wilbon
I think your bourgeois will be fine. If someone wants a red, and particularly with, you know, these early spring evenings, I think it'll be appropriate.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Guest 1
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
Are you going to chill at first? You're going to get it put in the fridge for about an hour before service.
Tony Kornheiser
I wasn't thinking of doing that. No one ever told me to do that. I was going to leave it out on the countertop where it's been in the direct sun. No, it's not in the direct sun.
Michael Wilbon
Let it cure.
Tony Kornheiser
It's not in the direct sun. But I mean, I don't want to. I don't want to impose my tastes upon Alan when I have something better. By the same token, I'm not sure that Alan is a big wine drinker. I'm not sure.
Michael Wilbon
Yeah, I don't think you have to look at this in terms of better, in terms of price. I Think you have to look at it with, you know, the flavor profile you're gonna have. Salmon has a bit more fatty flavor to it than if you just had a very light white fish.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Michael Wilbon
But I think that that gourmet that you're gonna have, it will be good with it.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you. Is there any scary moment? Do you think Carol's up to this? I mean, you think. You think she can. She can make salmon?
Michael Wilbon
Do you have anything you're gonna serve, you know, with a glass of wine before dinner? Are you. Is most of the dinner gonna be prepped? There's a timing to this.
Tony Kornheiser
I. I don't know.
Michael Wilbon
I think you're out of practice.
Tony Kornheiser
We have to serve with the wine. We have what I like all the time. My dad's potato chips. I like that. I mean, is that not.
Guest 1
Who doesn't like my potatoes?
Michael Wilbon
The captain calls them his sun chips. Because of the bag.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. It's not really classy, but I really like it.
Michael Wilbon
Well, you could serve the originals with a little caviar.
Guest 1
I. Oh, yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
I wasn't planning on that on caviar. And then the problem we have. Chessy loves those potato chips. Oh.
Guest 1
So if the bag gets open, she's like, I need them.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, my God, she'll be all over them.
Michael Wilbon
Does she go for the jalapeno Srirach?
Tony Kornheiser
She. She likes them all, but I like the originals best. I like my dad's original chips best. So, anyway, I just thought I would. I'd bring that up. I thought I'd bring that up.
Michael Wilbon
I have a chardonnay that you could have ready to go. If you are worried about a white.
Tony Kornheiser
I'll have to check later if I have a white. Or I could go buy a white. Of course.
Guest 1
Should I go?
Tony Kornheiser
I could go to Calvert Woodley and buy. By the way, I talked to Michael Sands.
Michael Wilbon
Make sure they bring it to the car.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, that's right. That's right. Matt Rennie. That's right. I talked to Michael Sands. Yeah. Just called him. Find out how he's doing. That was a nice client. I made calls yesterday. I called my friend Mitch album, and I reason I called my friend Mitch album was because I knew that Mitch Albom was a friend of Hank Azaria. Hank Azaria played Mitch in the made for TV movie Tuesdays with Maury. Okay, so they've been called on a Thursday, huh?
Michael Wilbon
Called it on Thursday.
Tony Kornheiser
I did. I did. I didn't. I didn't want to be too obvious and wait till Tuesday. No, there's a reason I called because there was a big story in the Style section yesterday about Hank Azaria. Good story.
Michael Wilbon
Who was on this podcast.
Tony Kornheiser
He has been on this podcast.
Guest 1
Friend of the show.
Tony Kornheiser
I was actually thinking when I read the story of having you call him and say, do you want to be on. And here, here's the. The spine of the story is that Hank Azaria has now become Bruce Springsteen. He has trained himself to sing, just sing Springsteen songs and sound, according to Mitch, who's heard it, just like Springsteen, to get up and talk into a microphone just like Springsteen. And he's apparently either last night or tonight or tonight and tomorrow. He's in Washington once and Baltimore once. You know, I wasn't going to leave. I don't leave my house.
Michael Wilbon
He could come to dinner.
Tony Kornheiser
He could come to dinner, you know, and I really open up with a good bottle of wine at that point. But in any case. In any case, I didn't read the whole story, but it talks about him being Springsteen and performing at. Performing at his own 60th birthday party in New York City. That's a flex, okay? So I call Mitch and I go, you know, there's a story on Hank. Azeri says, oh, yeah? And I said, you'd probably want to read it online. And he said, mitch says to me, so I know about this with Springsteen because Hank had his. And then he starts talking. Hank had his 60th birthday party in New York a few months ago and invited a bunch of people and invited Jeanine and I, and we went to New York to think. So we're standing there and he's got like, you know, it's a really big room and there's a setup for a band. I mean, Mitch knows what a setup for a band looks like. Mitch, a musician? Yes, yes. And he says, okay, you know, so we're there and there's a bunch of people there, and then Hank comes out, a band comes out and they go into Promised Land, and Hank comes out and sings Promised Land as Bruce Springsteen.
Michael Wilbon
It was the B Street Band.
Tony Kornheiser
So, Mitch, it's called the Easy Street Band. The Easy Street Band, yeah.
Guest 1
Tonight, Soundstage in Baltimore. Show is at 8:00. Tickets available.
Tony Kornheiser
And when's the Washington show? Or was it last night?
Guest 1
I think it was last night because it's not coming up on this. The show after that is March 28th in Patchahoge.
Tony Kornheiser
Patchogue. Patchog. Long Island. Patchogue. Long Island. Suffolk County. Yeah. Harpaughog. Patchogue. You were not born there. I don't expect you to know it. It's like I'm not born in Boston. I don't know where they are. Okay.
Guest 1
Worcester.
Tony Kornheiser
So does Promised Land and mixing. This is wonderful. And then does another song. It's great. And then he does another song and Mitch says, wait, he's gonna do an entire show.
Guest 1
Concert, three hour show.
Michael Wilbon
He's gonna do like acoustic Thunder Road.
Tony Kornheiser
He's gonna do an entire concert as Bruce Springsteen. And Mitch said, just, wow. You know, I just, I didn't expect it.
Guest 1
That's phenomenal.
Tony Kornheiser
I wouldn't have expected either. So I, you know, called him in, wouldn't expect it.
Michael Wilbon
But it makes sense when you see the breadth of characters that he has done.
Guest 1
Exactly. Yeah. I mean, he's. His voice range is astonishing. It does everything. Every accident.
Tony Kornheiser
But one of the things the story points out is Hank Azaria has had trouble being Hank Azaria because he get lost in all so many other things. Yeah. And now if he's Bruce Springsteen, he's not Hank. His. So it's a good story. I recommend the story. And I had this. It gave me a reason to call Mitch and had this lovely conversation. You know, I admire Mitch's work with the orphanage in Haiti so much, which is a difficult. I don't want to go into details here, but it's a difficult place to do this. All right. It's not the safest place. It doesn't have the most powerful centralized government. And Mitch does this charity work that is so admirable. So admirable. And the only other thing I wanted to mention was I didn't stay up late. I never stay up late. I'm not going to stay up to watch a 10 o'clock start on a Lakers Knicks game in LA. And so I just watched the highlights and the Lakers are down like 20. So I figure, okay, it's over. They're down by 20. Down by 20 in the fourth because.
Guest 1
They'D won what, seven in a row?
Tony Kornheiser
They won seven in a row. They won 15 out of 19.
Guest 1
Yeah, they.
Tony Kornheiser
And one of the stories we did Yesterday for the SportsCenter segment was are they getting praise? Too much praise too soon? To which I said, no, they won 15. I know. What do you want the schedule to strangle them so that you can. You can laugh and glee? They're not that good. No. All the praise they're getting now is all deserved. All deserved. They come back and win in overtime. They win the game in overtime. So I assume we'll, you know, now Mike's not on the show day Pablo's on the show today, so I assume we're going to. Yeah, you gotta lead. I think even I. And I. Enough with the NBA. But even I think you have to lead with that.
Jason Lock and Fora
That.
Tony Kornheiser
That's a big time win for the Lakers. They don't have any height. They got nobody who can play. Karl Anthony Towns. Karl Anthony Towns goes crazy against them because they don't have anybody big. But they got two guys who are pretty good and they make everybody else better.
Guest 1
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Fat Luka Doncic.
Michael Wilbon
I thought he was. Fade in ot.
Tony Kornheiser
Pretty good, huh? He's pretty good. He's too fat. He drinks too much, he eats too much. You know, every single time they win a game, Nico Harrison's tenure as the general manager at Dallas gets shorter every single time because he's a great star. Playing with a great star.
Guest 1
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Who's now over 40 years old and getting over 30 points. He's the greatest over 40 basketball player of all time. He's still one of the five to 10 best players in the league. Still now over 40. So, I mean, I just. I was really surprised that they won the way they were down by so much. Yeah. When I saw that choked job by the Knicks.
Guest 1
Yeah, it's a tough.
Tony Kornheiser
I know Wilbon loves Tom Thibodeau, but, you know, where's the defense? Late. You're up 18 and a fourth. The Knicks, where's the defense?
Guest 1
They're good, but when they play one of the top tier teams, they lose. They lose every time.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, they lose all. All right, we'll take a break. Who's first?
Guest 1
Jason.
Tony Kornheiser

This is and these are Brian K and the Parkway. Our next tour starts in the spring. We'll be celebrating the release of a new acoustic EP on Friday, April 11th with a special all ages show at Jam and Java in Vienna, Virginia. He plays him Jason Lochir and I have to read. We're joined by Odyssey NFL insider Jason Locke. And for host of the podcast in the Huddle, covering the entire NFL, you take your radio show into sites, right? Like restaurants and bars and stuff like that?
Jason Lock and Fora
Yeah, we do, certainly on occasion. Yep.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you ever have a band with you?
Jason Lock and Fora
No.
Tony Kornheiser
Would you like to have a band? Is that something you ever thought about, having a band with you?
Jason Lock and Fora
Oh, I would totally be into that. I mean, like, to play during the breaks and stuff, while we're in commercials. I feel like this is now a time. Full disclosure.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Pat Forde
You'll see.
Jason Lock and Fora
Not a whole lot of people there, you know, between two and six when we do these things.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, are there more than five people there?
Pat Forde
Not always.
Jason Lock and Fora
Not always.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, what if you had a band with you and you advertised you had a band? Yeah.
Jason Lock and Fora
Like, again, I'm. I'm, you know, far removed from the marketing process and how the sausage is made, and a lot of times we're in casinos and so, like, I don't know if they would really.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Lock and Fora
Go for that if that's too much of a production. But I am, for the record, I'm. I'm totally here for it. Especially, you know, if they're willing to take some request from little old me. I'm.
Pat Forde
I'm.
Jason Lock and Fora
I'm there for it.
Tony Kornheiser
I always like that idea. When we did live stuff and they had a band every once in a while, it would be great. Yeah.
Jason Lock and Fora
I love live music.
Tony Kornheiser
Made me very happy.
Guest 1
Makes the whole atmosphere just that much, you know, more festive and better.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Lock and Fora
You know, here at the Auto Bar next Friday, seeing Jonathan Richmond. Please say hi.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. There you go. There's a. I thought I wrote some stuff down, like, four days ago when we couldn't get you because you were busy. And some of it still works, but in the interim. In the interim, Joey Bosa got released. And the Bengals, which stink on defense, they stink. That's why Joe Burrow didn't win the Super Bowl. They said to their best pass rusher, Trey Hendrickson, you can make a deal somewhere else. Can you explain both these things to me?
Jason Lock and Fora
Well, yeah, Boses, I mean, they paid Bosa a lot of money, and he hasn't played a whole lot of football since they started paying him a lot of money. And I think that owner kind of reached his breaking point. But, you know, Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa, going into the market, they've obviously got some work to do to add some bite to their defense and some pass rush. But, yeah, I Mean, I think there's a case to be made that Joey Bosa's perhaps damaged goods from a physical standpoint.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lock and Fora
But saying that he's got a big time resume, he came into the league as a super high pick, he was a super high prospect, and people always won't pass rush. So, you know, he might, he might still do all right. But I think there's a lot of buyer beware there from a medical standpoint. You know, look, I've been writing about this in the Washington Post for a long time. Joey Burroughs off season of his discontent was inevitable because Mike Brown is not as committed to spending his money as Joe Burrow is to spending Mike Brown's money.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Jason Lock and Fora
There's a, there's a disconnect there. And the mishandling of the T. Higgins situation has cost them oodles in short term cash and oodles in cap space. And the Jamar Chase thing still has to get done. And so if they really do want to squat on Higgins for another 27 million for one year, because I don't think there's going to be a long term deal done and they feel like they've got to try to win it with those two this year. And you're not willing to spend, you know, 80, $90 million over the cap, which is totally okay. And some teams do it, but it's not a Mike Brown thing. Then you're going to have to rob Peter to pay Paul. And so, yeah, I'm not surprised about much of this. I'm surprised they put the tag on Hagan. Ultimately. I didn't think they would do that. I thought they'd be smarter than that. But once they did that, there was clearly going to be a bit of a bloodletting in some other areas. And Hendrickson, because of you look at what Max Crosby just got you. Look at what I was just talking about with Bosa. There's real value there that this guy is, has been durable and he's been incredibly productive. And so they're going to have to get as many draft picks as they can and then they're going to have to draft a defense and hope that it gels quickly because they've got, you know, a $60 million quarterback and they're going to have a $35 million wide receiver and they're going to have a 27 million dollar receiver. They still need help on the offensive line. Yeah, they're the Bengals, Tom. They're the Bengals. They don't win a lot.
Tony Kornheiser
Do you think that there would Come a time when Joe Burrow said get me out of here.
Jason Lock and Fora
Well, it wouldn't be the first time somebody said that in Cincinnati.
Tony Kornheiser
Right, right. I think, I mean he's an Ohio native.
Jason Lock and Fora
Yeah, yeah. I mean look, they're trying, they got some stadium stuff going on there. Obviously the player surveys came out. They didn't fare too well in that the NFL PA surveys. They still have a reputation as being too frugal for their own good and you know to Pennywise and pound foolish. And if that does turn out to be the case in Joe Burrows eyes through roster construction the next years, Joe Burrow also just google sometime Joe Burrow surgery and, and do it like back to college. It's, it's a lot there. It's a lot there. Like you know, like I don't know man. Like he's talked at times about his football mortality in a way you don't hear. 20 something quarterbacks do a lot. Like I think there's a part of Joe Burrow that's sick of being cut open every offseason. So you know, I don't know that his time clock is the same as everybody else's time clock. Like I definitely don't think it's Tom Brady. Maybe it's not Andrew Luck, but it's probably somewhere, you know, in between and it might skew a little bit more 34 to 36 than you know, 40 to 42.
Tony Kornheiser
Let me, let me stay with, with people changing teams and things that, you know, your, your eyebrows go up. The Kansas City trades Tooney to the Bears. Kansas City exposed as having no particular offensive line that could protect Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. Against only a four man rush, this guy had been a two time all pro player at guard. They moved him to tackle. He probably wasn't as good at tackle. But were you surprised? I would have been less surprised if they brought in offensive linemen then they got rid of one.
Jason Lock and Fora
Well, I would just caution it's very early. There are some organizations who have earned the benefit of the doubt. They are certainly one of them and they do this before when they had to rebuild their offensive line and they did it very adroitly. I thought that they would have been the ones to massage to his contract to extend him and then let Trey Smith go into the market and use some of that savings to maybe bring in a left tackle and some other things. They decided to keep the younger player Trey Smith to take what they could get for Tuney. I would be shocked if they're not going to Reinvest those funds into something, whether it's a Ronnie Stanley from the Ravens as a left tackle or. Or maybe a Cam Robinson or maybe they have another. Like they've traded for left tackles in the past. They're pretty creative organization. I mean, they were willing to move off of Tyree Kill at a certain point.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, yes.
Jason Lock and Fora
Some people thought it was crazy and you don't have enough weapons right now. That. That's one aok for them. Look, we now have Hendrickson and, you know, eventually Myles Garrett to be traded. You know, are they looking at something like that? I Mahomes is they got signed forever, and they can always move his contract around to create more room. So I just think they're a team to keep a close eye on, and I would be shocked if they went the cheap route out of this and that they didn't have something cookie behind plan B that you'll be like, oh, now I get it. But, you know, we're still at least a week from this stuff happening for real.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Were you surprised at all with the kerfuffle around Matthew Stafford that they were even saying, maybe he'll go, maybe he'll stay? I mean, Sean McVeigh dangles people out there. What was that?
Jason Lock and Fora
No, I mean, look, they couldn't come to terms initially on what a contract should look like moving forward, so they did, I think the smart thing, which was, hey, we. We don't. As much as all these teams need quarterbacks and there's nobody out there at this stage of your career, we're not sure somebody's going to be willing to do much more for you than we are. But if you want to know for sure, you know, we'll lift the tampering situation. We'll give people permission to talk to you, and you can see where it goes. And ultimately, I think they were right. But no, I mean, there were a lot of people around the league like Sam Darnold. I know, and again wrote about this. He was watching that situation very closely, going back to the still the regular season going on, because a lot of people were hearing the same rumblings, and that's where Sam Donald wanted to be if they did trade Matt Stafford. Now it turns out Stafford couldn't get exactly what he wanted anywhere else. So he goes back to them, which I think will have even more of a chilling effect on this very sort of lukewarm quarterback market to begin with. And I think the Vikings might prove sage by not even transitioning tag Sam Darnold and maybe getting Sam Darnold back anyway at even a lesser price than that. So it only takes one team to do something differently. But. And the specter of collusion is always very real in this.
Tony Kornheiser
Sure.
Jason Lock and Fora
And quarterback agents were leaving Indianapolis shaking their head. So it could be that they're. They're all in for a bit of a rude off season.
Tony Kornheiser
Tennessee is the number one pick. They have a guy at quarterback, Will Levis, who makes wonderful mayonnaise commercials but isn't a very good quarterback. I don't know that there's a great. I don't know if Cam Warden, Shador Sanders are great. I have no idea. What does Tennessee do with the number one? Do they trade it or do they keep.
Jason Lock and Fora
I think they would love to be able to trade down and still get a quarterback. I think that's the scenario that they would prefer. And it, it's, you know, it's. It's possible. It, it would not shock me if they were able to execute something like that. There's obviously, you got to be careful with again, so many teams needing quarterbacks and this free agent class being blah, blah. It only takes one team, like maybe the Raiders, to, To do something you didn't expect. And then you realize we moved down too far. So, yeah, you know, we'll see how they navigate that. They are perpetually under new management these days there. You know, they're always sort of firing their coach or their gm so we'll see how connected they are and, and you know how willing ownership is to risk some things to get rewards beyond just the right to select, you know, the quarterback of your choosing.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lock and Fora
But you'll hear a lot of slander about these young men. You'll hear a lot of anonymous, oftentimes middling to crappy coaches come out, you know, under the cloak of darkness and shred their character for one thing or another. I've covered this league for a long time. I. I think they both will end up going pretty, pretty high because that's how it works.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Plug your radio show for us.
Jason Lock and Fora
Jason, you can check us out from two to six. Tony. Every weekday on 1057 the Fan. We are inside Access. You can listen to us on the Odyssey app. You will almost never and to this point actually never hear a band with us. But perhaps that changes. I am very much open to it. I'm into the idea. We don't have much room in studio, but yeah, next time we venture out, we do a show from Pickles Pub or something like that.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Lock and Fora
If a band just wants to show up with their own equipment. I will. Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Lock and Fora
And however much I have the authority to do so, this is a standing, just statement. I'm cool with that.
Tony Kornheiser
So in the parkway. Thank you, Jason.
Jason Lock and Fora
You got it, guys. Thank you.

This is the Tony Kornheiser show once again. This is Brian K. In the Park. This is a song called Little Fires. The Parkway Shuffle.
Guest 1
That's right.
Tony Kornheiser
And Brian writes it's our homage to the Jersey Shore sound of the 1970s Asbury park, which is the Bruce Springsteen sound. We're very happy to have music by Brian Kay in the Parkway who I'm trying. Obviously, I want Jason Locanford to invite him to the next time they do a gig. Yes, Michael, if people like Brian K. In the Parkway want to send in their original music, how do they do it?
Michael Wilbon
Send us your music by emailing it to jinglesonycornizershow.com and they're playing in Pat.

40 and Pat 40 last in recent times. Pat 40, like Jason Lock and Fora. We wanted them on a certain day and they were unavailable. So it. Which is fine because it's nice of them to ever come on the show at all. But I write the questions down before that day. So the questions are old at this point, which is okay. Which is okay. But I got a lot of questions for Pat and I just sort of wanted to start Somebody you know very well you've Know him personally? I do, too, but not as well as you know him. Rick Pitino. If you had a vote for coach of the Year, would you give it to Rick Pitino?
Pat Forde
Yes, I would. It's just preposterous what he does over and over and over again, everywhere he's been. And, you know, at an age where eventually you think it will catch up with him and it never does. He is. He's ageless, he loses his fast, doesn't lose his fastball at all. And what he's doing at St. John's is ridiculous. And if you saw him singing and dancing on Jimmy Kimmel last night, it's just another added layer for why he deserves the award.
Tony Kornheiser
So I've known him a long time, observed him for a long time, and I think he's just a great basketball coach. He got there last year. He inherited a team in the middle of the year, as you well remember, Pat, he said, this team stinks. We're not working the way I want us to work. He got rid of the parts he had to get rid of, and suddenly, I'm not saying they're a national championship team, but they're really much better than they were. And they're pretty good, right?
Pat Forde
Oh, yeah, no, no, they are quite good. They don't shoot very well, which is, of course, one of the prime objectives of basketball is to put the ball in the basket. They don't do that very well, but it doesn't matter because they're so good defensively. They are, you know, it's a classic, relentless pressure team. Not necessarily full court pressure all the time, although they do that. But they are just in your face for 40 minutes everywhere. They're all over the glass. They're, you know, they're playing with that incredible Pitino effort. And you would think, Tony, that coaching effort would kind of be the baseline. Like everybody can coach effort. Nobody coaches effort like he does. I don't know how he gets more out of players than everyone else does, but that's it. He just cranks it up. And they play like their hair is on fire all game.
Tony Kornheiser
Every game they do. I'm going to go with one. I just want to ask one other question about a coach, the coach at Alabama. Because when I saw the end of the Tennessee game last Saturday, I mean, I thought, is anybody coaching? Nobody challenged that shooter. Nobody guarded that shooter. And you couldn't get it in. You got the five second count in the critical possession where you have a chance to win the game. I think his name is Nate Oates, and I know people think he's a very, very good coach. And then they just got beat the other day. You know, they lost again the other day. It's been a terrible week for Alabama. How is he regarded as a coach? I thought it was good.
Pat Forde
Yeah, no, he is well regarded.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Pat Forde
You know, very much so. And he's. He's a big analytics guy. And you know, that if you, you know, do all the numbers, then playing as fast as possible and shooting a million threes or getting dunks is the way to go. And that's kind of his philosophy, and it works. And he's got great players, but he's had some bad losses, too. I mean, you know, they were the number one overall seed a couple of years ago and melted down in the Sweet 16 and lost to San Diego State.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Pat Forde
You know, they've. They've had their moments where you wonder now, they also made the Final Four last year, so, you know, but they. There are times you watch them, I think, especially in late game situations, and you wonder if, you know, this is all built on an analytic system that doesn't necessarily factor in, you know, this is how we have to play this certain possession to win this game.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, that's what I thought. I mean, I looked at, you know, I looked at the five second count and I looked at the not guarding the kid, and I go, what are you doing? What are you. What are you doing? I mean, okay, he's throwing it in and it's one in 20, but still get on him. Right. He took three leisurely dribbles up the court. Nobody's on him. All right.
Pat Forde
You would think somebody would get a hand up.
Tony Kornheiser
I've been talking a lot about this for the last week or so because I was moved by the fact that at the Duke game, the kid started chanting, one more year at Cooper Flagg. What are the realistic chances he would come back for one more year? Because he can get a lot of money in NIL now.
Pat Forde
He can, yeah. But there's still not as much money in NIL as there is in the NBA.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Pat Forde
You know, maybe not right away with the rookie contract, but. But the sooner you start in the NBA, the sooner you get closer to that second contract. And I just, you know, I think he's. He's NBA ready. I can't. I can't believe there would be a number one pick that would come back. It's a nice sentiment, of course, and I think he's enjoyed his time at Duke, but I would be completely floored if he's not shaking hands with Adam Silver as the number one pick and come to.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, all right. Duke assistant. It's Jai, I think it's pronounced Lucas. Gonna take the job. Okay. Take the job at Miami. John Lucas's son. Wow. Right? Wow.
Pat Forde
Yeah. Yeah, that's right. I mean, it's. It's interesting how you look. He's very well regarded coach. He's a great recruiter. The timing is terrible. He's gonna be on the Duke bench on Saturday when they play North Carolina and Chapel Hill. I'll be there for that game. And then that's it. He's not staying for the postseason. And, you know, this is portal driven. This is, you know, we. He's got to get there and try to secure his roster, whoever he wants to keep, and then start trying to poach other people's players for who they want, who's available. So it's a mess. It's a bad situation. Shire talked about it yesterday, and, you know, he's putting the best spin on it he can. It's like, you know, this is great for Ja or Jay, you know, we're not going to stand his way, clearly, blah, blah, blah. But he said the timing is not ideal, and it's not. They got a chance to win a national championship, and you're going to get up and leave at the most important time of the year. So it's a bad look, but this is kind of the system that college basketball and college football have created.
Tony Kornheiser
Could that cost them the championship? I wouldn't think so.
Pat Forde
I don't know. I mean, you know, the Shire has given him credit as their, quote, unquote, defensive coordinator, and their defense is very good. So, you know, he's good at doing that, apparently. But, you know, the specialization of assistant coaches I don't think is quite as intensive in basketball as in football.
Tony Kornheiser
That's what I think.
Pat Forde
So, you know, I think John Shire can say, all right, these are the matchups, and this is how we're going to guard this pick and roll. And they'll still be okay, but it is just a, you know, a weird thing. Nobody would even consider a few years ago leaving a possible national championship team before the postseason started. But that's where we've gotten ourselves.
Tony Kornheiser
I'll stay in North Carolina and go a few miles away. You went to Belichick's practice, right?
Pat Forde
I did.
Tony Kornheiser
Tell us about. Tell us about that. I mean, he welcomed. Look, this is a guy who hates media. He hates it. I worked with him. He hates talking to anybody. He talks through clenched teeth. He doesn't want to do this, but he's never had to sell anything in his life to this point. And you go to college, you got to sell that college. You are dependent on selling it to the people you are recruiting. What was it like?
Pat Forde
Yeah, I mean, it was just, you know, really strange to see him there. I said, it's like, you know, you hear that there's an elephant walking through the streets in your neighborhood. You're like, well, I have to see it to believe it. And that's kind of how it is with Belichick at North Carolina. I have to actually see him in North Carolina gear to believe it's really real. And it is. The press conference was interesting. He wasn't bad, wasn't good, but he wasn't bad. It was classic him in some ways where. So at practice they don't have names on their jerseys and they don't have numbers. And he did that in New England as well, especially with rookies. And it's kind of like, you know, you know, you are nothing until I tell you you're something, basically, is the approach. And somebody asked him, said, you know, how did you explain that to the team? He said, well, there was no explanation. This is the way it is, guys. I'm not here to, you know, pat you on the back and say it's going to be okay. I mean, this is going to be an NFL franchise type run organization. They're going to do things, you know, not in the college, rah rah sense. He is being a little more open, I think, than you might expect for the very reason you said North Carolina football doesn't sell itself. It needs to be sold. He's gone out and done some home visits and recruiting, you know, letting in the media for 15 minutes of practice. It's. It's a little bit different side of him, but that's what he has to do.
Tony Kornheiser
One of the things that occurred to me and I said yesterday on the show was that the downside of this, you can't be 4 and 8 and lose to Georgia Tech in your first year. You got to win 10 or 11 in your first year because you're telling kids, you want to go to the NFL, sign here. We know the NFL. We've won in the NFL, right? You can't go 4 and 8.
Pat Forde
No, no, you cannot go 4 and 8. And they, you know, I don't know whether they have the personnel to win 10 or 11, but you would think they could at least win eight and that would probably get them some credibility. They were 6 and 7 last year. There was obviously some roster turnover. They've got a question. Nobody knows for sure who the quarterback's going to be. So I don't think great things are expected. But yeah, it's not like he doesn't have a five year plan. He's got to have a two or three year plan. He's 72 and you gotta show some credibility. I think immediately here there's a great chance, you know, if he doesn't have a good first season, he may just say, yeah, you know what, nevermind.
Tony Kornheiser
That's right. It's the most interesting thing in college sports. Bill Belichick in North Carolina. It is, right?
Pat Forde
Yes. It's the most surprising, stunning football hire I've ever seen. And it is. It will be utterly fascinating, even more so than Deion Sanders at Colorado. It's just going to be so fascinating to see if, you know, the most accomplished coach in NFL history can do it at this level and does he like doing it at this level and what do they look like?
Tony Kornheiser
I agree. I mean I yeah, it's must watch. It really is Must watch. Must, Must cover. Plug your podcast for us.

A couple of my. Yes. A couple of my insights would have been the ACC is the worst it's ever been. It's almost unwatchable on a nightly basis. My Tar Heels have been up and down all season and we've got the dreaded dookies coming as weekend. So who knows? As for Cooper Flagg, I think the reason he doesn't come back for a second year is because if he tears an achilles or an ACL, that's a $100 million injury. I think the SEC is going to get a minimum of two teams in the final four. Hopefully one of them is Alabama because my son went there. The son that you met. And my daughter goes to Auburn right now. If we needed to van for time we could discuss Pinehurst was just there on Sunday. Michael Norwood, professional development and career coach at Carolina. Isn't that. He was very nice to meet him. Yeah, very nice to meet him. I do have one other guy who I know played varsity basketball at North Carolina, Larry Brown. I got him. Your old coach found him for a while. My old camp counselor.

Nigel I believe David Epstein, New York, New York I think the complaint you have about Daylight Savings Time may have as much to do with time creep as it does with the idea itself. When Daylight Savings Time was established federally by LBJ via the Uniform time Act of 1966, Daylight Savings Time began on the last Sunday of April, thank you. And reverted to Standard Time on the final Sunday in October, a six month interval. But much like the NBA playoffs, a series of expansions, first in 1987. And in 2007 added one week on the back end, but nearly two months on the front end from the last weekend in April to the second weekend in March. So, as a writer and one who was careful with language, I think you may find it funny, as I do, that standard time now runs for only four months. How can that be standard when it exists for only one third of the year? He's 100%.
Michael Wilbon
Today's early son was ideal for you, right?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Guest 1
But it's going away tomorrow or I guess Sunday morning. Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
So Monday morning when I take Chessy out and bring her back, it will be in darkness for two to three weeks.
Guest 1
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And as Jesse Collins young one saying darkness, darkness be my pillow. Chris Martin Columbia, Maryland Though we may not agree on a believable amount of ice cream savings to buy you two to six pints, me 10 to 40. We're in lockstep on this time change nonsense. This is what there is one right time for pre work dog walking Daylight time rise at sunset. Rising at sunrise is perfect. Like today, 6:32am next week. Ruined. How is it called Daylight Saving Time? It takes the sunrise away for an hour for another month. I'll take zero pints of this hocus pocus saving time junk. P.S. please tell Jonathan she pansy to eat it. Brian in Matsuyama. I guess that means in Japan, right? I'm guessing who hates daylight savings time with the passion of a thousand sons. The name that should live in infamy is George Hudson, a bug geek in New Zealand who wanted more time after work to collect insects in the summer, first proposed the concept of daylight savings. Sounds like a golfer in 1895. Though independently some Brit in 1907 also suggested it because he wanted more golf time in the evening prior to the creation of time zones for trains in the 1800s, there was no need for Daylight savings time as the world lived by. A corollary to Dr. Tony's pedometer axiom. You want to wake up and work at dawn, then wake up at work at dawn. So in Franklin's time clocks weren't even standardized enough to necessitate the viral concept that is daylight savings. For the record, Japan doesn't have that junk and my life is better for it. Yeah, it's junk. Yeah, it's junk.
Guest 1
It really is.

Bill Wieners in Austin, Texas. Never been a David's Doughies bagel Ria suggested by Graham Weber last episode. But my favorite bagel place in Austin is Holy Bagel. Go to the south location on William Cannon, not the one up north on Far West.
Guest 1

Tony Kornheiser
Not that even the great Brad Stuover, the first and only so far goalkeeper for Austin fc, has been known to frequent the location on the morning of home games. Speaking of the mls, we are two weeks into the season. I must have missed the preview episode. How's your MLS fantasy squad stacking up this year?
Pat Forde
Just right.

My wife's also a librarian in Austin, Texas. Sons Hickeys like the official show librarian, Mary Fay Randolph, I feel my David Aldrich moment is just around the corner. Alex Broder first time Long time with my first David Aldrich moment. I lived in Montgomery county my whole life until I moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 2018. I always enjoy the comforts of home the podcast provides like the disaster that is the Staples parking lot. And don't get my mom started on Calvert Wood on Wednesdays Pod Graham Weber sent in songs and mentioned David Doughey bagels that he shares with his daughter on Sundays. And I said, I know that bagel. That's my cousin's bagel. My cousin Devin Broder isn't a Little, so he's very confused as to who David Aldrich is. He moved to Austin, Texas from Montgomery County, Maryland and started making bagels since he couldn't find a good bagel anywhere in town. David Doughey Like David Bowie. Not that David Bowie started the farmers markets and now he has a trailer on Weberville Road in East Austin. All the bagels are wrapped in foil. That's good. If you happen to stop by the trailer, ask for a cousin. Alex Little's Helping Littles Limited Time Offer I wanted to send a very important shout out to Graham Weber and his daughter for the show's connective tissue. Keep an eye out for a big box of that from David Doughey and tell Graham Weber and Devin Broder to eat it and Graham's daughter to pound sand. Tony in Portland, Oregon first of all, I'd like to say congratulations on correctly pronouncing Axitol Axel Axolotl I didn't get it right on your first try. I got it wrong this time. I I'm sure you could. I'm sure you could ask one of the three boys at the house. Axolotl.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, Axolotl.
Michael Wilbon
Axolotl. I'm sure it's going to be a squishmallow that they want to get.
Tony Kornheiser
This is from Bill Mattfield or Matefield. Matt Feld. I'm sorry. Oh, man. Tony, you don't write subject lines. What's the over under on how many IT people are going to write in about this? 50, 100? I'm not an IT guy, so I can explain it in layman's terms. No subject line is a basic email faux pas. Emails with no subject lines get routinely ignored by most people. At my company we get annual cybersecurity training and emails with no subject line is one of the red flags we're told to look out for. We're taught to do nothing with those emails except to hit the report suspicious button we have in Outlook. Scammers will sometimes send out emails without a subject line in order to elicit a response. To see if that email address is active or not, they will then target that email address for scams. Resend your email with a clever subject line and you're more likely to get a response.
Michael Wilbon
It's like the scam phone number, phone calls. Yeah, just to see if you answer.
Guest 1
I didn't know the scam texts I've been getting about. Easy pass. Like your easy pass, we need your credit card information.

With all the considerations material to Cooper Flagg's decision on where he could spend his millions. I'm astonished you omitted the most critical one. Electricity delivery Choice from Steve McCollum in Washington, D.C. i've never heard of you crossing the river into Virginia. You know it's close, right? But imagine my surprise when I caught sight of this license plate which seems to indicate you do visit Virginia. Specifically, Old Town Alexander. Sh.

Brian Deaton, my friend's cousin's friend, said he saw you getting into the driver's seat of a Subaru with three bags of candy watermelon slices that you bought at a Tanger outlet just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Confirm or denied tonight.
Michael Wilbon
Tonight with an expired coupon.
Tony Kornheiser
I've never been. I've never been in the Subaru. I don't like watermelon things and I. It's been a while since I've been to Cincinnati. If you're out of your bike tonight, everyone, as always, do wear white.
