Hey, it's Tony. On today's show we will talk with Michael WILBON about the U.S. open and more. And we'll talk to Dan Graziano about the good, the bad and the ugly from week one in the NFL. But first, commerce.

Let's talk about how you don't think anyone remembers Zsa Zsa Gabor. And the connection is not only do I remember the Gabor sisters, but my father fixed Zsa Zsa's teeth in an emergency situation while she was in Syracuse back in the day. So I'm assuming his father was a dentist as opposed to just some guy.
E
On the street who put his face.

Up and said, fix teeth. Fix teeth.

The Tony Kornizer show is on now.
A
Alrighty then. We are loaded today. Let me do a favor for our dear friend Maury Povich. To begin with, Maury's got a podcast called On Par with Maury Povich and the current episode he talks with Mark Mulvoy who was the editor of Sports Illustrated and when Sports Illustrated was at its height, one of three or four Editors in chief when Sports Illustrated was the dominant sports magazine. And he talks about, you know, hockey teams behind the Iron Curtain and the swimsuit issue. Everybody wants to know about the swimsuit issue. Sure. You know, and it's, it's good. I mean, he and Maury are pals and they've been around a long time. So if you get a chance to listen to that, after you listen to this, by all means, listen to Maury Povich. I. I have a million things here. The Gnats very quickly. The gnats. 1. All the games against the Cubs were day games, so I didn't watch any. I didn't watch a single pitch. But the next day, for him, no, the net couldn't stay up. For him, I could stay up. It was day games. I didn't watch them. Other things were going on during the day. But they won. The Nats won the last two and won the series. We'll ask Wilbon about this.
F
Of course.
A
Josh Bell hit a pinch hit home run. How about that? You know, it drives me crazy.
E
How did they put up like five or six in the ninth?
C
Right.
A
There were levers. They're really good now.
E
Just had to wait for the Pennsylvania.
A
They were the worst in the league. They got rid of the bums and now everybody's pretty good.
G
Jose Ferrar, our favorite actor, he's done well.
A
So I want to get off that.
G
Can I just mention one thing real quick? And I know it's not the Nats, but did you see what the Orioles.
A
This is exactly what I want to get to. Yamamoto takes a no hitter into the ninth for the Dodgers. The Dodgers are up three nothing. He gets to two outs in the ninth. Jackson Holiday then hits a home run, right?
G
I think so, yes.
A
And breaks up the no hitter. It's either a home run or a double or something like he sends a guy back to the wall. Jackson Holliday does that. And then they bring in relievers who walk everybody. And the Dodgers lose the game. They end up losing. They have a no hitter with two outs in the ninth and they're up three nothing. They end up losing the game. This has never happened.
G
Astonishing.
A
In the history of baseball in the major leagues, this has never happened.
G
It's just one out from a no hitter.
A
I don't know what to do with this. I don't even know if it finds room on the pti. So I don't know.
G
It's a crowded Monday.
A
It really is.
G
Yeah, but that was especially because it was the Dodgers. It's not you know, some Punch and Judy team.
A
Yeah. And we're not like, I don't know that we can get to college football. There's two things that happen in college football or at least worth mentioning. I'll ask Wilbon about these two. Florida State won again by 10,000 points. Florida State is now ranked. Florida State was 2 and 10 last year. Florida State is now ranked. Okay. Nobody expected that. And Mike Gundy, remember Mike Gundy from Oklahoma State? I'm A man, I'm 40. Mike Gundy, you know, he wears it in your eye all the time that he's smarter and better than you. Mike Gundy during the middle of the week said, you know, we really shouldn't have to play Oregon. It's not fair. We don't have anywhere near the nil money that Oregon has because of Nike. Okay. And Nike, yeah, they have a lot of nil money because of Nike and because of the new rules. Dan Lanning, I think, is the name of the coach at Oregon and he's pretty good. If you look up his record in the last three or four years, it's pretty good. This was a no mercy situation, I think. I think the score was like 66 to 3. 66 or 69 to 3, Oregon over Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State's been a very competitive team under this coach, Mike Gundy, for years.
E
Going back to 20, 22, 10, three, then 12, two, then 13 and one.
A
Lanning, he's good. He knows what he's doing and he didn't call the dogs off. What was the final?
G
69 3.
A
69 3. These are two D1 teams. These are bold teams in recent years. Yeah. 69, 3. Because basically what he said was really, you're going to. Before this game, you're going to say we have an unfair advantage. We do something that's unfair.
G
Let's show you.
A
Eat it. 69, three. Yeah. So I thought we would mention that. The tennis. Oh, the tennis. So Anna Samova loses to Sabalenka. Sabalenka is the most powerful woman in. In tennis. That was a really good match. Ana Samova came close. She didn't win.
G
Yeah. Fought back, you know, she didn't win. Yeah.
A
Okay. The number one seed won. Yeah.
G
Defending champ.
A
You cannot have a problem with this. No. That was a really good match to watch. Every once in a while, Sabalenka got to the point where she'd miss a shot and you thought, oh, there's an explosion about to happen and she's going to loot. No, she didn't. Yeah.
G
She got back on a control quickly.
A
And then Alcaraz beat Sinner in four sets. And Alcaraz was he two of the three sets.
F
He won.
A
He won comfortably. Yes, he won what I would say. Easily. And Sinner. Sinner is great. If you watch them go back and forth, the ball is being hit 100 miles an hour. You know, it's just a really different tennis than there used to be out there. Yeah. With great players like McEnroe and Sampras and, you know, and Djokovic can't beat them and it's over. Yeah. Like he, he didn't beat them. He did not beat Alcaraz. He's not going to beat Alcaraz.
E
To be fair, nobody else can beat the. The two of them either.
A
These two guys now, the last eight. Yep. Majors. One of these two has won. This is what Nadal and Federer did when they were young, until Djokovic came along. Now you, now you're wondering who's going to come along. Is there somebody going to come along or is it just going to be for the next, I don't know, five to eight years? These two in every final feels like it. They're really good.
E
And every final between them ends up playing out a little bit different. Here you had Alcaraz beats him 2 to 1 with winners, mostly forehand winners. He only drops three service games. I think the entire tournament.
G
The entire tournament, yes.
E
For the, for the actual match because it's hardcore and Cinder wants to play fast. Who makes a decision to keep the roof closed? I know there's the threat of rain, but it does seem like that sort of slows it down and gives Alcaraz a bit of an edge just in terms of using. Getting some more.
G
Yeah. I forget how that call's made. I don't know, probably the tournament had.
A
You know, but you can't, you can't reverse it, right. Once you make it, you can't reverse it. You can keep it open, but once you close it, you throw everybody's rhythm up. You can't do it. What happened with you and your former golfer?
E
So I, before the match, I'm going for a walk and I get an email from a former golfer of mine. You know, you get all these things like, you know, subject line coach like. And I, and I find out that my former player, Andrew Kupfer is a ball ball boy for the men's final.
A
For the final.
C
No kidding.
A
He's out there.
G
That is fantastic.
A
He's out there and his dad listens.
E
His dad listens to those, like, hey, you want me to give you a couple minutes? Monday after NFL Week 1 might be a little bit different, but I'm watching the game, I'm watching the match, and I see him.
A
Did you, did you know beforehand?
E
I, I saw the email beforehand. But then you're also trying to do the progression of like, okay, what is, you know, I knew him when he was, you know, a high school kid. So what does the maturation look like? See a signature line? He's at Northwestern.
A
Oh, is that right?
E
I wonder if he'll be back for game day this weekend.
G
That's great.
A
Oh, he'll be back. And Wilbon will be there too. I mean, there's no question about that. Do you want to talk about the Walker cup, which was visually stunning yesterday, late.
E
You just had a.
A
The.
E
The script is that the Americans go into singles in a close match. And once again, a lot of close matches turns into a what seems like a lopsided victory. But it was not that way until the last couple holes. The video work. There is a, like a Super video about 12, 14 minutes, narrated by Condoleezza Rice, that goes hole by hole with an overhead view, which is just, even if you're a non, go one of the prettiest sites, you know, in the world. And I have the little boy boots. He's staying up. Mom's trying to get him upstairs. He was trying to get the kids to go to bed earlier. But I want him to see one stretch of holes in particular. The singles matches, they're leaving the 14th where there's this cool, gnarly old tree and then there's this, you know, it can't be more than 50, 60 yards to walk from that green site to the 15th, which opens up the, you know, the three hole stretch that Jeff Ma was talking about. And even a little, he just looks and goes, oh, my goodness, I'm. You've never seen anything like it. So you get to see the matches go to these decisive par threes. Earlier in the day in foursomes, you've seen people go 2, 2 on some of these holes. And you end up seeing Mr. Walker cup himself in Stuart Hagistad, a midair, great career as a banker, but a mid AM who's able to take a couple weeks off for this, who makes the decisive putt to at least clinch the matches as the fog.
A
He's in his 30s. Everybody else is in college.
E
As the fog has rolled in and you can't even see the pin.
A
Yes, it's gorgeous. Cyprus is Gorgeous. Would you just describe what you have to do on. Is it 16, the par 316?
F
Yeah.
E
So 16 is. I mean, they were playing it at. I think it was listed 221, but if you're going directly at the green, it's. It's all carry. And again, over the ocean. By design, there is an easier out. You can take it out to the left and play for not the most difficult pitch shot. But there's a. There's the famous story as it's going through design process. You have someone who decides to just drop the ball down and she clears the ocean and goes. I think we can put the tee right here. It's not too hard, but famously it's, you know, your caddy will hand you probably one or two clubs more than you think it is and just say, try and hit it over. And very rarely. You're not going to.
A
Well, I'm not going to.
E
But then you saw them get to 17 and one of the matches. Luke Poulterson, these guys are. They're laying up. There's some talk. Would anyone try and drive?
A
It's Ian Poulterson.
E
Yeah, Luke's the name. So they're laying up with what looks like six iron into the fog, because you can't see anything. One of the biggest ways to just sort of disarm a golfer is to take away sight.
A
So it was. I watched it for about 15 minutes. It was lovely. Did Rory McElroy, by the way, in a playoff. One playoff.
E
Had eagle to get into, came from behind.
A
He was like four down, I think, when, when started the day.
G
By the way, did you like Carlos's celebratory act?
E
The golf swing.
G
The golf swing pointing to Sergio Garcia. Oh, every time. Yeah.
E
And I think Sergio was hoping to stay in New York for the Ryder cup, but missed a phone call.
G
Well, and I think Sergio. They played with Sergio, like throughout the tournament. At least a couple of times.
E
They had this awkward talk about handing over money and no one could hear it, right?
A
Yeah.
G
Because apparently Sergio was like, yeah, I owe him some money. Or Al Carlos is like, yeah, he owes me money.
E
The camera showed Sergio opening the wallet.
F
Really?
G
Apparently he's very good at golf as well.
E
All golfers are. Nadal. Look up Nadal's golf swing. It is ridiculous, but it is so accurate to him as a tennis player and as a scratch, you know, so that happens.
A
All right, I need to mention a couple of people who left us over the weekend who were consequential in sports. One is Ken Dryden. And one is David Johnson. Tom Boswell makes a very compelling case to put David Johnson in the hall of Fame. In the Washington Post, Davy Johnson was. He managed the 1986 Mets. One of the great comebacks in history, thanks to Bill Buckner, obviously. But the Mets have only won two World Series in their lifetime. Gil Hodges managed one and Davey Johnson managed the other. He managed in Washington and brought the Washington Nationals to the playoffs. I think he had another playoff team at another place. And Davey Johnson was a multiple time All Star at second base in his playing career and once hit 40 home runs.
G
Is he an MVP one year?
A
I don't know that he was an MVP, but, you know, he's, he's a baseball lifer. And I believe Boss said that he has the sixth highest percentage winning percentage of any manager ever. And the other five are in the hall of Fame. And Boz made the case to put Davey Johnson in the hall of Fame. So he was a very important person of baseball for 60, 70 years. I mean, you know, very important. And Ken Dryden may be the greatest goalie of all time. Ken Dryden went to Cornell. He's Canadian. He went to Cornell as a goalie. He led Cornell to the national championship. Then he went to play for the Canadiens. I think he won five Stanley Cups, something like that. His career didn't last more than 10 years. I mean, and all he did was win. He wrote a book called the Game about hockey, which is brilliant. It's absolutely brilliant. And then he became elected to the Canadian Parliament.
G
That's right.
A
He's, you know, a national treasure in Canada. And I, I think you can make the case that he was the. I mean, he's in the conversation as the greatest goalie of all time.
G
Absolutely.
A
Yeah.
G
And our great friend to the show, Al Michaels, he was in the booth.
A
Yes.
G
The game.
A
Yes.
G
Against the Russians.
A
Yes. Yeah. Do you believe in miracles? Yes. Yeah. And everybody seemed to love Kendra. Yes. He was beloved. He graduated with an actual degree. You know, I mean, he was, he was a student. He was very, very smart. He had other ambitions other than hockey and was able to realize them. And so both of them, I'm sure that they will be melancholy. Happy trails today. I'm sure that we will do that on PTI because they were very consequential. We will take a break. We will come back with Michael Wilbon and find out what he watched over the weekend. I'm Tony Kornheiser. You're listening to the Tony Kornheiser Show. Let's talk about Your home security for a minute. People used to think that home security was just an alarm that goes off after a break in. Scaring the intruder off and maybe getting a neighbor's attention if you're lucky. But that's a reactive approach. And by the time an intruder is in your home, it's too late. Your feeling of safety is already shattered. Real security should stop a crime before it even starts. That's why you should trust Simplisafe. Their system is designed to be proactive, not reactive. Just ask Nigel. He's been using Simplisafe for years. He loves the peace of mind it gives him. He knows that even when he's not home, it's working around the clock to keep his home protected.
G
That's right.
A
Yeah.
G
Peace of mind. It's worth everything.
A
Here's how it works. They use smart AI powered cameras to spot potential threats outside, outside your home and instantly alert. Simply saves professional monitoring agents. These agents step in before the break in begins, using two way audio to confront the person, triggering sirens and spotlights to scare them off and calling for rapid police dispatch if needed. It's security that works while the intruder is still outside. Join the more than 4 million Americans who trust SimpliSafe every day. This is the Tony Kornizer show.
A
This is our friend Brett Whiskens and he writes thanks for playing independent musicians for so long. This song what made me celebrates my 30 year career and the music that inspired me. It's also a nod to my birth city of Chicago. I was technically born in Oak Lawn, Illinois and how those memories shaped me into the artist I am today. With the bears playing tonight and Wilbon being on the show, I figured it was kismet to share my new song, what made me Music and lyrics by Brett Wiskins and produced by Doug Henthorn. He's very good. We're always happy to have sent us a bunch of of stuff and in fact, he plays in Michael Wilbon who? You know, let me just start with this. You told me on Saturday evening that you were going to go out with Matty and play nine in the morning yesterday. It was sort of drizzly in the morning. Did you get out and play? Oh, what happened? Do you think he just deliberately hung up because he didn't want to answer that question? So call him back. Should I vamp for a while or will we make an edit? Some of you will hear some of this and some of you will hear none of this because Nigel has to make sure that it works at the end. We got him. Is he back with us?
G
Yes, I believe Mike is back with us.
A
It felt like you just didn't want to answer my first question and I didn't know what happened. So the first question was you told me on Saturday night that you and Matty were going to go play nine yesterday morning, but it was drizzly in the morning. Did you play?
F
It was not a drop of rain at four streams and we did.
A
Oh, good. So worked out.
F
Yeah, not a drop of rain out there. It did work out. It was great to go back out there. Haven't been There in a while. Don't get there often. Since our days, you and I have gone there all the time. But it was tremendous.
A
Good. All right. I'm glad for that. Let's start. Let's. We'll get to the pro football. We'll get to it last, though, because we're going to start with the tennis Sabalenka and Alcaraz. The Sabalenka Anis Moba match I thought was. Was very, very good. The Alcaraz center match. I'm awed, honestly, Mike. I'm awed by how much better they are than everybody else.
F
You know, Tony, they are the best in the way that Sampras and Agassi were the best of that generation. I don't know how much better. It doesn't take much for somebody to climb in the ring with them. Just like Federer and Nadal look better than everybody else. Until Djokovic climbed during with them. Now.
A
Yes.
F
I don't know.
A
Who's that guy? Who's that guy?
F
Right. I'd like there to be, but I don't know that it's all that much. We. Even. Even when they went in straight sets, you look at these other guys and they have major talent, these guys. These two are the best.
A
Yeah.
F
And I. I don't know how well tennis is served. Even, you know, somebody who loves tennis like me, I got tired of the men's because there wasn't going to be anybody else in the ring with them. And I want to see more of a battle royale. That's just me. So while I acknowledge their superiority, I don't know that their dominance is in the interest of tennis. The women's, to me, was much more interesting because there seemed to be literally a dozen women, including people who went out in the first round, like Madison Keys, who could. Who could win, who could get to the finals, who have one of the eight quarter finalists, all eight had been in the finals in the last couple of years.
A
Is that right?
F
That to me, yeah.
A
Okay.
F
That to me is much more interesting than the men. And you're right, those two guys, I mean, they're just by themselves right now. I don't know that. It's like, what is this French kid? Can he. Can he get from winning a set? Felix.
A
Oh, he's Canadian. He's Canadian, Yeah.
F
I mean, I don't know.
A
I have no idea.
F
You know, I don't know. I just seems like to me there are moments that somebody can climb in with them, though have not done so yet.
A
What did you think, Sabalenka? She's, she went back to back here she is the number one rated woman in the world. Although I know you love Osaka and Witek has won more majors and this and the other thing. And Anisimova is a heartwarming story. But what do you think of Sabalenka at this point?
F
She's, I mean, she's a great story. She's, you know, I find her interesting because she's so difficult and annoying for me to watch on court and yet has, I would, some would say, gone out of her way. And it's fine if she has gone out of her way to sort of project something else the moment the match is over. The moment it's over. And it seems to play with her peers because she's well liked. Not. I mean, obviously you respect somebody who's number one who can win back to back US Opens, but she seems to be liked by her peers, which is interesting. So, I mean, there's a dozen interesting stories and she's one of them. But I'm going to be curious when we get to the Australian Open. Okay. Who might try to just snatch the baton from her and with the men, I don't know. Somebody's got to prove it. Maybe somebody will, but I got to see it.
A
All right, you want to bring up bad times? The Nationals beat the Cubs all three day games. It's like your youth. It's day games. But the Nationals beat the Cubs twice. Then the Cubs are not in any danger of falling out of the wild card. But what did you make of that?
F
It angered me. It's the worst series of the year.
A
Yeah.
F
And the Cubs, you know, they, they had you look at the schedule and there's six games on the schedule against San Francisco and Washington. And at the time they went in there now the San Francisco, the Giants had beaten the brewers, which was quite a statement. But you're figuring, okay, the Cubs are pretty, playing pretty well. They had swept Anaheim, you know, they had won two out of three somewhere else on the road in the West. And they go San Francisco and the Nationals. Six games, lose five of them.
A
Wow.
F
And that, you know, and that. And yesterday for our closer, who arguably has been, you know, he's been in the discussion for best closer of the year. Danny Valencia, he got lit up. He gave up. He gave up four hits and five hits and four runs. I mean, this is not a, you know, I realize we're four clear of the second place wild card team. We would have a wild card spot and we would host The Padres three games in Wrigley. But when you start, the starting pitching has been great. But when you get lit up on the back end of your pen like that by the Nationals and the Giants and we lost two out of three to the Braves. No, I guess we won two out of three against the Braves. Still, one of those games was not good. And the other game we barely won. We had to come back from 51 to beat the Braves. And I'm not, not in a good mood about the Cubs this week.
A
All right, how about Northwestern? They had a laugher, right? They had an easy one.
F
Yeah. I don't count any college football that was played this week.
A
Well, you got to count South Florida over Florida. You do. You have to count.
F
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, but you know, every game was 60 to 3. Because this is a game.
A
Yes.
F
Power to particularly the SEC and the Big Ten played weak sisters. It's just, I don't. This week was. Everybody trumpeted how great last week was in college football. It was a great opening. This was a sad sack week. It was just, it was a waste of time. It was a waste of everybody's time. You know, people winning 70 to nothing and 69 to three. I just.
A
Well, let's ask about it. Let me get to that. Let me. Because I took great delight in talking about this in the open. Mike Gundy went out there unsolicited and says it's unfair for us to have to play our. I mean, you're Oklahoma State. You've been a bold team for a lot of years. Mike Gundy's had a very successful record until last year. Now he's, he's not been good lately, but just last year and now. But he basically said, you know, have pity on us. And Dan Lanning just kept driving 69 to 3. These are D1 real D1 teams. What do you make of that?
F
I loved it.
A
Me too.
F
You know, I, you know, I don't want to hear from Gundy. I just don't. He's just a aggravating person who I'm sure has been a pretty good coach for a long time. Yes, he has been around for a long time. You don't exist in that conference with that competition without being pretty good at what you do. But it's just as a person, I want him to get drubbed every game. And I actually watch a lot of that game simply because Oregon, in whatever green uniforms they decide to put on is visiting Evanston, Illinois. That is where Big Saturday at noon on Fox is camping out On Saturday in Evanston. So, you know, I'm a little. I'm more than a little nervous about that appearance, but I was glad that he stuck it to Oklahoma State. That was at home. That was in Oregon. I don't know that it makes a difference where they play right now because they look like they're pretty good.
A
All right, let's get to the NFL. Let's just start with what you thought of the Justin Fields Aaron Rodgers matchup, which is honestly produced a lot more points and a lot more excitement than I thought it would.
F
Yeah, yeah, it produced a lot more excitement. And, you know, I was cheering for Justin Fields as if he was wearing a Bears uniform because, you know, I just can't stand Aaron Rodgers at this point. Can't stand him. And so I root against him. He had flashes of old Aaron Rodgers. I mean, he did on that team. He doesn't have to necessarily be great because they didn't even play great defense or run the ball. They didn't even do those things that we know the Steelers can and are likely to do. And, you know, they looked really good in that one area, which was producing points. Now, my one, you know, pushback is. It was the Jets.
A
That's right.
F
Let's not get crazy.
A
And they gave up. The Steelers gave up a lot of points to the Jets.
F
That's what I'm saying. They didn't do the things that we're accustomed to the Steelers doing and expect this Steeler team to do. But on the other hand, you know, Rogers to go out there and then rip the jets and talk about how glad he was. I mean, like, like he wasn't at fault because he stunk the joint out. But he is just a guy to whom accountability now as he goes on his, you know, tours, you know, on a certain show, frequently he just goes and takes shots at people. And so I will root against him. I will root against him every week. I've never rooted against the Steelers in my life. So the Steelers became my second favorite team very early in my youth when I was, I don't know, 11. The Steelers and Bears both went 1 and 11. I guess it was a 12 game season back then. Maybe it was 14. Maybe they went 1 in 13. The Steelers and the Bears the same year and because of a coin flip they got a guy named Terry Bradshaw and we didn't. But I still rooted for them, you know, for rising up out of those ashes. And I've rooted for the Steelers secondarily all my. I love the Steelers. I like who they. The toughness. Pittsburgh is not unlike Chicago, and that way they're a place I can root for. You know, I'm not rooting for, you know, LA teams or New York. I'm not rooting for them. I root for the Steelers. But now I have to root against them with every fiber of my being because they have that creep.
A
Let me go into your division. I know that you thought Green Bay was improved and you would take Green Bay over the Lions, the Lions over everybody.
F
Over everybody.
A
Lions had nothing. They had nothing. Did that surprise me?
F
There are two things about my division. I think three things, maybe four. I think that the packers are the best team in the nfc, and I would take them to. When I would take them to be in the super bowl, right? I would. You know, I think that the brain drain in Detroit is real. The coordinators, and that it takes more to replace those guys because Dan Campbell, you know, there aren't many players, coaches who make it work to that degree. I don't believe in the whole player coach thing in the NFL. There are some. Mike Ditka did, but he also. There was brain drain that took the Bears down when he lost his coordinators, most notably Buddy Ryan, even though not the next year. I don't know about Detroit and all that they lost. I have, you know, worries about them, okay. And the Packers, I think, are the best team. And I think the Bears will get to be a pretty good team this year, though not at the start, but I also think that all the people on get up and First Take who tell me how great a rookie quarterback from Michigan is who wasn't even great in college. I got to see that. I got to. You know, I don't believe that. And I believe the Bears will take him apart tonight. And I'm not rooting against that kid because he's a Chicago boy. He went to his first game of his life in a Brian Urlocker jersey, and there are these completely endearing pictures of him wearing a 54 jersey because he grew up a Bears fan. He grew up wanting to be that. So I'm not about to, you know, take shots at JJ McCarthy, but I believe the Bears ought to take him apart tonight because he's a rookie. He's taking his first snaps. Don't tell me about his second year in this system and how great the system is. The Bears defense hired Dennis Allen for a reason. Tonight's the reason.
A
All right, one question to get you out. Fabulously entertaining game. How does Baltimore lose that game? How did they lose that game.
F
Wow. Wow.
A
How they lose it. They were up 15. What?
F
Yeah. Yeah. It was, it was unbelievable to watch because you kept. I kept thinking they haven't put them away yet. Even two scores when they missed a double doink, it's like, okay, not double doink. A doink. And you know, coaches are idiots for going for two all the time. Just total fools for doing that. And it winds up costing somebody all the time. But I don't, I don't, I don't know how they lost that game. It's unbelievable that they lost.
A
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and it, it hangs with you. Derek Henry fumbles. What? What?
F
You know Henry, who has, he's running. Great game that Henry had.
A
Yes.
F
A truly spectacular game. And it's a punch out. It's a great defensive play. Now, you know what I don't believe that game means? I don't believe the result means anything. I don't. Nothing. I believe it means nothing to the season except it could mean home field ultimately.
A
That's right. For Buffalo.
F
For Buffalo. But I don't, I don't think it means it. I think that we still know how good Baltimore can be. We still know how good Buffalo can be. We thought it was even going in. I think I, I think in my pool with a 16 point confidence meter, I think I picked Baltimore by with one point. So in other words, I have no idea who's going to win this game. I got to pick somebody one point out of. On a scale from 1 to 16, the near shocker was I think I picked Cincinnati as my 16 point game. And Cleveland outplayed them.
A
Yes, they did. Yes, I did.
F
There's no. That. That is going to be glossed over.
A
No, that was an escape. No, no, Cincinnati escaped. They escaped. Joe, Joe Flacco threw two interceptions that were caught. Passes. They should never have been intercepted.
F
Should never have been.
A
And like, if people blame Flacco, you go, whoa, no, no, no, don't blame Flacco.
F
There's no. And, and, and, and that defense. Now, Cincinnati's defense did, you know, play a respectable game, which they had not in the last four years to start the season. So there's a.
A
That's right.
F
You know, that's what I'm sure they were looking for. And they approached the entire preseason differently. But, but, you know, that game was a stunner in that. The way it played out. And of course, so was the Colts.
A
Yeah. Daniel Jones. Wow. Wow. I never saw that in New York. Never saw it.
F
Yeah.
A
Nobody saw.
F
Well, we see Glimpses for like a week and then three weeks are going the other way. But you know, the Minnesota, I mean, the Green Bay, Detroit game, that played out about like I thought it would. I just think the packers are going to go crazy and have one of those. We'll be talking about them being 120 or something. As tough as their division is, I think they will be that and then we'll see down the stretch because I don't expect those three teams in the division to go away. I just think the packers are the best team in the NFC to start the season.
A
All right, I'll see you later. Thanks, Mike.
F
All right, Tom.
A

This is the Tony Kornheiser show. Ooh.
I
In the Wimbledon final when it was all over, Wantek double bagel. Amanda Anissimova. It could have been the end of Anissimova. She could have crumbled. Career could have been over. But at the US Open, she figured what the heck, Swung from her heels and beat Svanteck. Now everything's possible. The sky went supernova when Swanteck fell to Anisimova. Just cause last week you fell on your face doesn't mean tomorrow you might not win the race. The White Sox could win it all. The Wizards could be champs. The Eagles could fall to a team made up of tramps. Bernie Sanders could play guard next year for Villanova now that Swantek fell to Anisimova. Thanks, Anisimova.
A
It's a brilliant Dan Byrne. It's the greatest turnaround I've ever seen. Oh, oh, oh. And then you beat the person the next time you play in a huge match. And it's just wonderful. Plays in Georgetown's own Dan Graziano. We're going to talk about football. There's a million things and so we're not going to spend a lot of time on any one thing. I wouldn't think. We'll take them in chronological order, starting with the Eagles and the Cowboys. Was there anything learned from that game? And then, you know, right after that, was there anything learned from the Chargers beating the Chiefs? Although in Brazil. And you could only see it if you had super secret YouTube credential. I don't know, I didn't watch it. Go ahead.
C
No, no. Yeah, YouTube, like YouTube.com and you could have just watched it like, come on, man. Like, you know, I don't have. I'm an old man too, but like, you know, you don't have to like lean into it all the time. No, I'm kidding. Listen, listen.
F
The, the.
C
What'd you say first? Cowboys. Eagles.
A
Yeah.
C
Like it seems like so long ago.
A
Yeah.
C
The Eagles have some questions to answer in their, in their secondary. They do. They have, you know, Quinion Mitchell and Cooper DeJean who are the rookies last year that were super bowl stars and they love. But obviously, you know, Dory Jackson was the guy that the Cowboys went after and with with some success. So, you know, the story of the Eagles this year is they let a lot of guys go on defense and they have to replace them with young guys and that doesn't always go smoothly. So they have to work that out. They're good at it. You know, Howie Roseman, the gm, will continue to make moves to the extent that he needs to and, and they should be fine. And I also think maybe the Cowboys aren't as bad as have feared post Micah Parsons. So Chiefs 10 at wide receiver again, right? Once Xavier Worthy gets hurt on the third play, they really didn't have any answers. They had a game plan designed around him and, and, and they're throwing other guys and they're not catching it. So Jeeves would probably be fine. But I think the story of that game was how good the Chargers looked and the challenge that awaits Kansas City in a division where Denver and the Chargers made the playoffs last year and both look like they've improved.
A
I agree with all of that stuff. I don't. I think it's. Obviously, first week is much too early to say goodnight to anybody. Or you can say hello. You can't necessarily say good night. But I will say this. Daniel Jones, yesterday, I didn't see that coming. I don't think Indianapolis is any good at all. And, and they won. They benched Anthony Richardson and everybody said, oh, what are you doing? What are you doing for Daniel Jones? Daniel Jones was really good. And this coupled with the fact that the Giants stunk again, which we'll get to. Does anybody look at Brian Dabel and say, there's the door, just use it. You don't know what you're doing.
C
We'll see. On Daniel Jones, look, I will say this, he was great, but if you and I went down this week to try out for a cornerback in Miami, one of us might get signed. Like, it is bad down there and it is. So let's see him do it again, right? I mean, good for him. Like, you know, he's, you know, he's probably better than, than we, the Giants indicated last year when they cast him off. But he's also probably not like, if you have him in fantasy, like, today's probably a pretty good day to trade is what I'm saying.
A
And I get that. I get that he, you know, water will seek its own level. But here, Russell Wilson hasn't been any good for like three or four years. He wasn't any good yesterday. 17 for 37, 168 yards. That's like under five yards an attempt. You have to win. If that works out, you have to be Joe Burrow and actually win a game, even though Burrow didn't win it. But, I mean, what did. The Giants were the hot ticket, right? Everybody said, take the points, take The Giants, Washington, everybody knows who they are this year. It's going to be a little bit harder. And yet the Giants were awful.
F
Yes, they were awful.
C
Russell Wilson under pressure, looked like he had never been under pressure before and didn't know what to do.
A
Yes.
C
You know, he's in year 15. Like, he should be able to 14. He should be able to handle it. Yeah, look, he's, I mean, you're right, he hasn't been any good since his second to last year in Seattle, which was a long time ago and three teams ago. And yeah, he's probably not the answer one game. But like, come on, like, we've seen Russell Wilson the last couple of years. We know what he is and what he isn't. At this point. They got to play the kid. I mean, the sooner the better because, you know, he'll give them some energy. Now they're, you know, they don't want to wreck him by playing him too early. We hear that all the time. I remember when the Patriots put Drake May in last year. All these guys, former players I work with, like, it's too soon.
F
He's fine.
C
Like, these guys are these guys. These guys can handle it. Jackson Dart wants this opportunity. So look, I don't know what's going to happen. Day Ball was asked after the game if Russell starting next week in Dallas. He didn't say yes. So, you know, Jackson Dart watches on and I think that's the one hope the Giants might have for making this season interesting.
A
I don't want to go down the road that says that you reach a certain age and you can't play anymore. Because I would refer anybody to Aaron Rodgers yesterday. Aaron Rodgers had four touchdown passes, no interceptions. Yesterday I was sort of amazed that the Pittsburgh defense, which is supposed to be the best defense they've had in years, that was not a good defense. What about that game?
C
I didn't have Steelers jets as a shootout. That's a whiff. But it went, I'm guessing it went over pretty early. Justin Fields look pretty good.
A
Yep.
C
But yeah, you're right. Like, Pittsburgh's defense is sort of this assumed constant. Right. Like, like, oh, Pittsburgh's great on defense, but, you know, it's like they're getting a little older on that side of the ball. The first round rookie, the D tackle they drafted is hurt. He didn't play. So they're a little softer up front than they like to be. Cam Heyward, still good, but 37 and, you know, was not all the way practicing through camp because he was Working on a contract thing. So they got some, they got some things to figure out about side of the ball. I know they're encouraged by how well the offense played and how they were able to spread the ball around to different guys and all that. But you know, Aaron is 41, going to be 42 by the time the season ends. So it's less of a question how good he looked in Week one than how he holds up. And at some point they will need to support him with, with more diva. I mean, they got lucky. Like, lucky. I mean, the jets fumbled a kickoff and, and the Steelers needed a 60 yard field goal to win the game. So they got away with one Mike Tomlin and, and they'll hope to do better, I'm sure.
A
Cincinnati got away with one. Joe Flacco had the worst luck in history in terms of interceptions. Those are caught balls. The last two. Right. Those are caught balls. And. And Cincinnati escapes. That surprised me. Cleveland was better, significantly better than I thought they were better.
C
So. So this is a huge win for Cincinnati because they never win in Week one and they never beat Brown.
F
Yes.
C
So like in the Joe Burrow era, the Browns have just been a very difficult matchup for him that they're. They have good cornerbacks that match up well with those great receivers. So Cincinnati getting out of there with a, with the skin of their teeth, one point win when they had seven yards of offense in the second half, like, that's like they don't care how it looks like they needed to win that game. They won the game. They're fine with it. We will see better days from Joe Burrow, Jamar, Chase, T. Higgins, all that. And Flacco is Flacco like, like, you know, the Browns are. The Browns are probably going to struggle this year. I know that's a hot take. So consistently good for so long. But yeah, no, I think, you know, Flacco is just going to hold it down till they figure out when it's time to play one of the kids.
A
So I will just, I'll just mention Geno Smith had great numbers in his debut for Pete Carroll. Baker Mayfield was heroic. He won the game for Tampa Bay. But let's get to the two games that there's some meat on. The Lions got nothing, the Lions got nothing. And Baltimore gagged again. Take them in any order you want.
C
You do like a week's worth of shows on that Baltimore Buffalo game. But like, first of all, they say the Lions. The game to me was about the Packers. The Packers I think are ready to Be an elite team, like a Super bowl caliber team. They had a top 10 defense last year by a lot of the metrics and that was the first year in a brand new system under Jeff Hasley, the defensive coordinated. Now they're in the second year and they added Micah Parsons. This could be a top level defense. Jordan Love got hurt in the first game last year, missed a couple games, struggled when he got back, is currently healthy. This is the youngest roster in the league, but it's also deep and it's got elite play callers on both sides of the ball. I think last year the packers went 11 and one against everybody other than the Lions, Vikings and Eagles, who happen to be the top three teams in the conference. And they went.06 against those teams. This is a massive win and a statement win by a team that thinks it's good enough to get to the super bowl and that. I happen to agree with them on that. I think the Lions will be fine. But I think the packers announced themselves yesterday as a significant threat to win the entire thing as early as this year. Now, the night game, I mean, like sometimes as a sports fan you just like, you think to yourself, like, I'm very, very lucky that I got to watch this game. Like, like that was so sensational. But maybe the two best teams in the league. Yeah, back and forth. Baltimore, in the place where their season ended in heartbreaking fashion in January, gets another heart. I mean, like Derrick Henry, the hero of the game, fumbles the game away. I mean, just Josh Allen, like, you know, what do you say, I mean about Josh Allen at this point? Like, what can he do? They were up, like they were.
A
They were up 15 right with four to go. What are you doing?
C
Up 15 fumbled, but well, they were that cut it to eight, right? And then he fumbles and then they couldn't get a first down after that to salt it away. And then Buffalo just moves down the field, executes the field goal as time's running out with a kicker they signed on Thursday. Like there were so many layers to that, but you know, that's the get. Like those, both those, those teams could meet again in the AFC Championship game. It wouldn't surprise anybody. And as a result of last night, that game might have to be in Buffalo instead of Baltimore. That game carries significant implications moving forward. So Baltimore looks like a wagon until there was like three, four minutes left. And Buffalo looks like, you know, a team that won't be denied. So I think that's going to be fantastic. Buffalo, remember Buffalo, they soft a Schedule, like, after this game last night, like, Buffalo only plays five more games the rest of the year against teams that made the playoffs last year. And they only leave the eastern time zone once in the regular season. Really, they should. As a result of winning that game last night, they should be the one seed when all is said and done in the afc. And Tony, like, I've spent a lot of time in Buffalo in January. You don't want to go there.
A
No.
C
No offense to the good people of Western New York, but that is not a pleasant place to play football at that time of year.
A
No, I'm not. I'm not going to hammer Baltimore. I'm not going to hammer Lamar Jackson. The numbers. This was a fabulous game to watch. You want to see it again? And it was the first game and there's really. No, it's not the playoffs. It's not the playoffs. It was fabulously entertaining. I want to go back to the Lions for a second because I'm going to use a quote that you just said that Green Bay has elite play callers on both sides of the ball. The Lions lost both their coordinators. You're a football guy. I'm not. Is that. How significant is that, to lose both your coordinators?
C
I say we will find that out. I'm going to give the Lions a break for yesterday. A road game against a hungry team that I think is, again, being underrated by a lot of people in the division. The coordinator changes. Like, if you. If you spend the whole off season saying this is the thing to watch out for with this team, that could cause them problems. And then in the first game that shows up, they had not. Oh, boy. Right. So, like, oh, the Miami Dolphins can't cover anybody. Well, then maybe we were right.
F
Right.
C
But so the Lions, like, we'll find out. Like, I think that the Lions would tell you. They believe significantly. And the culture that Dan Campbell has established in his ability to develop coaches in addition to, you know, the team and players. So I think they feel like they'll be fine. You know, we get a couple more weeks in and it looks like the play calling is a. But I am not going to kill the Lions for losing that game yesterday to a team that I personally think is one of the absolute best in the league going into the season.
A
I'll get you out of here on this. We'll take the packers off the board. Is there any one person or any one team where you said, oh, that was surprising. Let's keep our eyes on that. Either winning or losing.
C
I Guess you got to factor the opponent in. I mean, Jacksonville, I guess, looked pretty good, but.
F
Yeah.
C
No, I know. Well, I mean, right. Yes. You put me on the spot here. Like.
A
Yeah.
C
My head, like, let me. Let me look at the scores again.
A
And see, like, I just vamped for a while. Yeah. Vamp.
C
And then, I mean, Washington, you know, didn't look its best. They look like they've become that team now. That's, like, a really good team that can win when it's not at its best.
A
I'll make this easier for you. Did you love it when Aaron Rodgers said, basically, I hate everyone on the New York jets and so happy I beat them?
C
I'd say I'm happy to beat anybody associated with the Jets. Yeah. I don't know. That guy is something else. I don't know. Like, what else? What else? I see that look good the afternoon. I mean, Tampa Bay escaped with one in Atlanta.
A
Yes.
C
That's a big game. Rookie wide receiver that everybody was shocked they drafted. Catches, two touchdowns. That team's really good. Like, they've been division champions four years in a row. They want to take it to the next level and be, you know, a team that goes farther in the playoffs.
A
Mayfield is better than people said three years ago. He's better. He's better than that, you know.
C
Yeah, he's. I talked to him in training camp when I was down there. Like, he's. He's really found his spot, and he is, you know. Should he have been the first pick in the draft? Probably not, but it. Was he as bad as we. We thought he was two, three years ago? Definitely not, so.
A
All right.
C
Good for him.
A
Thank you for this good organization. Enjoy yourself. We'll call you. We're gonna call you so much that you're gonna say, no, no, I'm getting on. Get up at 7:15. Even though it doesn't start then. That's what I'm.

It's okay. Yeah, I don't think it's okay. Peter Jennings. Not that Peter Jennings. We are staying at a cottage just off Lake George Road on beautiful Lake George Road in Michigan. So not like George. The other Lake George, Wisconsin to help you find it. My lifelong friend and best man at our wedding lives on the lake. His name is John Von Houston and his nickname as a kid was grits. Okay, that helps us find it. There's it up Glenn Winter Shrimp, Chuck and Roxy 137. Or maybe 237. I don't remember anymore. From Newport News, Virginia. I always enjoy the segments with Jason Locke and for. I speak a bit of Italian thanks to. To my opera career. But I don't know what camphora means. I looked it up. Camphor. It means Camphor. You know, like the old time pin reliever. Like the stuff they put in Vick's VapoRub. His name is Jason Camphor. Now you need to find a basketball analyst named Mickey McCurochrome and you'll be all set. From Kenny Ray, our old friend in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, I would add the Heart 8 Pit barbecue in Coppel. C, O P, P, E L L, Texas, just north of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Just north of the airport. To the list of great Texas barbecue joints. Look at the size of the furnace they used to create all that magic. And he sends a picture of the furnace. Furnaces. I don't. I don't understand how furnaces work.

Growing up in Nashville, I was friends with a Brooklyn transplant named Bobby Schnapper. Bobby was a Dodgers fan, so naturally I became a Yankees fan. He wanted to be Duke Snyder. I wanted to be Mickey Mantle. Bobby became a dentist. I'm still in the advertising business most of my life. I hated the Dodgers until the woman to whom I'm related by marriage and I were in San Francisco staying at the same hotel as the Dodgers. On a whim, I left a message at the front desk asking Tommy Lasorter for an autograph from my friend Bernie, who was battling cancer. Bernie was a Brooklyn transplant as well and like everyone of that age in ilk, swore he once played baseball against Sandy Koufax. When I was checking out, there was an envelope waiting inside, an autographed photo of Lasorda inscribed, to my friend Bernie, Tom Lasorda.
F
How great is that?
G
Is great.
A
How great is that? Bernie did not survive, but that picture still hangs in his family's home. So I don't hate the Dodgers anymore. In fact, I love watching Shohei until Bobby Schnapper to eat it. Eric Pickett. I teach middle school art, sixth and seventh grade. The other day, while explaining how I ordered the wrong kind of paper, I said, I really flushed the mouse on this one. Without missing a beat, a 13 year old girl looked up at me and said, oh my gosh, Mr. Pickett. Is that some old person saying, don't ever say that again? And from Brian Sauter. I'm a huge fan of you, Wilbon and pti. I've watched almost every episode since day one. The exceptions are when I'm on vacation, but even then I'll watch if I happen to be in my hotel room at the right time. I've recently started listening to your podcast. Why you haven't been hawking the show on PTI is beyond me because it is excellent in its mediocrity. Thank you. More importantly, much more importantly, I'm a huge fan of Johnny O. I heard the TK codes and the TK birthday codes. Is there a current promo code? Please tell me there is, because it's the number one reason why I listen to the show. And for you, here is Michael oh.
E
We should have TK Yak set up. Sometimes there is a little bit of a lag but tkyac all about the yards after catch yeah and they have some great fall offerings right now. So TK Yak and if it's late just give them a chance.

Wimbledon final when it was all over Swantek Double bagel Amanda Anissimova it could have been the end of Anissimova she could have crumbled Career could have been over but at the US Open she figured what the heck swung from her heels and beat Swanteck now everything's possible the sky went supernova when Swanteck fell to Anisimovo Just cause last week you fell on your face doesn't mean tomorrow you might not win the race. The White Sox could win it all. The Wizards could be champs. The Eagles could fall to a team made up of tramps. Bernie Sanders could play guard next year for Villanova, now that Swiatek fell to Anisimova. Thanks, Anisimova.
