Hey, it's Tony. On today's show, we will talk to Jason Lochinfour about Phillies win over Dallas and the rest of the big games in week one. And we will get picks from James Carville and Jeff Ma. But first, let's keep the sales weasels happy.
Show Announcer
Previously on the Tony Kornheiser Show.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know.
Jason Lockinfora
It's a lot of points in an NFL game. Opening game. I think that Dallas is going to be entertaining. They're going to have. Because they're always going to be behind. They're going to be throwing and throwing and slinging it. So they'll be an entertaining team to watch if they're healthy. So I'm going to take that eight and a half.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Kansas City is playing the Chargers. This game is, for reasons unknown to me in Brazil. I mean, I don't know. I mean, is Taylor Swift doing a concert in Brazil? I don't know.
Show Announcer
The Tony Kornheiser show is on now.
Tony Kornheiser
Chuck Todd is one and. Oh, end the season. Right. End the season. Just stop right now. Chuck Todd is. Want to know he correctly had that game.
Jason Lockinfora
He did.
Tony Kornheiser
And they were ahead most of the game. Fred in that game was never eight and a half by Philadelphia. No. And they were ahead, but they were never ahead by that month.
James Carville
And they stuck on 24.
Tony Kornheiser
20. Started the scoring. Yeah. Yeah. So good for Chuck Todd. We're going to talk about that game with Jason Lock and Fora. You're all spared. The gnats didn't play last night. You know, I got nothing. I got nothing. Well, I got something on the Nats.
Jeff Ma
But it's undefeated in September so far.
Tony Kornheiser
Because if they played the Miami Marlins forever, they would be undefeated forever. Let me read a couple of things. One, the Bethesda Row Art Festival this weekend, September 6th and 7th. Is that tomorrow and Sunday?
James Carville
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
So 6 and 7 this weekend. Yeah. And this is from Bree Hayden, who says, I want again to invite you out to the Bethesda Row Arts Festival this upcoming weekend where I will be exhibiting my artwork on Bethesda Avenue near Bethesda Bagels. I was really fortunate to sell out all of my originals at the end of last show season. So all of my works are new, created in 2025. The bottles I've drawn have some interesting histories and include many pre prohibition whiskies from the DMV area. She does paintings of bottles.
James Carville
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
They're. They're immaculate. They're accurate.
James Carville
It's astonishing.
Tony Kornheiser
I mean, it is, it seems to me, an acquired taste. Yes. You know, I mean, but when you look at them, you go.
James Carville
It's very striking. Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Really is. Yeah. Bri Hayden. And we get this from.
Jeff Ma
Speaking of Bethesda Rowe. I saw this when I was reading the local news the other day. Do you know who's celebrating 43 years in business?
Tony Kornheiser
I do not.
Jeff Ma
Bethesda bagels.
Tony Kornheiser
They've been around that long?
Jeff Ma
Yes.
James Carville
I didn't realize it was packed this morning.
Tony Kornheiser
Was it?
James Carville
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Well, were they giving stuff away? It's a midlife crisis. Only to me.
James Carville
It always offends people when this little guy straight to the line, worms his way up to the front and gets his stuff and walks out without paying.
Tony Kornheiser
Like, what? Is this from Jason Smorell, who is the general manager of the Syracuse Mets affiliate team?
James Carville
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Who always does A la Cheeserie Night. He writes, I am so late in getting this to you. I'm sure you will read it after lecheeserie night. Part 4. Quattro from Maggio has taken place. No, it's Tuesday. Yeah, it's coming Tuesday, September 9th. Regardless, I want to write about the strange connective tissue between the POD and what I am assuming is the official Triple A minor league team in upstate New York of the Tony Kornizer Show. The Syracuse Mets. Take away the Nats players you dislike that we have a shared connection to, such as Wander Suero, Austin Both. And the Beltway Mitterrand. Take away the random players we have a connection to after the Nets left Syracuse, such as Dom Smith and Colin Pooch. Just get rid of all of these people. Let's talk about your fascination with Joey Chestnut and the fact that he visited the Syracuse Mets this season and ate 79 boneless chicken wings in shut it down 3 minutes. Second, he ate 79 boneless chicken wings in 3 minutes while chicken tenders his 3 competitors combined 869.
Jason Lockinfora
What?
Tony Kornheiser
How can you even conceive of 79 boneless chicken wings in 3 Minutes? No. Wow, that's ruthless. Let's talk about how you don't think anyone remembers Zsa Zsa Gabor. And the connection is not only do I remember the Gabor sisters, but my father fixed Zsa Zsa's teeth in an emergency situation while she was in Syracuse back in the day. So I'm assuming his father was a dentist as opposed to just some guy in the street who put a sign up and said, I'll fix your teeth. Fix teeth. Fix teeth. Let's talk about your commitment to growing potatoes in your front yard. And what is the Syracuse Met's alternative identity, the Syracuse Salt potatoes, by the way, pretty soon now we're going to see if we have potatoes. We're going to wait till at least September 15, but pretty soon we're going to see if by some chance this line gets read, this gets read in time. Le Cheeserie Night, Part 4, Quattro Fromagio will take place on Tuesday, September 9th, in historic NBT Bank Stadium. Tickets for Littles are $5.11. Not so bad. And we will have lots of fun and festivities plan. Littles can get hotel rates and tickets with the code on the TK Littles Facebook or Chuck and Roxy's website. I think if you say La Cheeserie at the ticket window, we will sell you a $5.11 ticket. Chuck and Roxy will be in the house and Jake Ha will entertain at his fantastic family tavern before and after the game. A box of that is en route for you and the gang. Thanks for all of the laughs. And please tell Jon Stewart, not that Jon Stewart and Jay Kathryn to eat it. It's got to be a different. Anyway, so that's lovely. And that's from Jason, who's such a fabulous promoter of his team.
James Carville
Oh, absolutely. He understands it.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, totally. Tremendous. All right, what did I want to talk about? Because we won't get to this today. We're not going to get to the tennis because it's football day. The tennis last night were the two women's semifinals. Both resulted in, you know, in, in winners that, that are, I think, good for tennis. I think good for tennis at the moment. The first match was between Jessica Pula and Irina Sabalenka Arena Sabalenka. And we were going back and forth last night, me and Lowell Singer, and he said, she looks like a Bond villain, but she won. And Pula, they played great. Pegula won the first set, got broken early in the second, and I think broken early in the third as well. But they were long and good sets. It was a good match. These two played in the finals of this tournament last year, and Sabalenka, I thought, beat her in straight sets last year. So this was a better match. I was somewhat disturbed by the constant going back to Pegula's coach in the stands. What are we, what are we talking about here? Did I, did I tune in for the tennis match or did I tune in for this guy? I don't, I don't know who he is. He was fine. He was genial, but I didn't have to say I didn't get it. I Go to him once or twice. It seemed to me that he was doing commentary. Yeah, he was on a lot.
Jeff Ma
Do they add him, though, for the commentary? Because sometimes in earlier rounds they'll bring on the coach just to give them a couple of minutes.
Tony Kornheiser
I know I don't get that sense.
James Carville
Yeah. And it was in an awkward time, like when she lost that second set.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
James Carville
It was all through the season.
Tony Kornheiser
Her.
James Carville
Yeah. And.
Tony Kornheiser
And, and he was talking about getting her up for big points and she was losing big point. And I. Yes. I just thought someone listening to this in the way I'm listening to this and wondering what is exactly is going on here. So, I mean, but Sabalenka is really good. She's really good. I know people say that there are times she loses matches because she, you know, just sort of gets into herself in a way and she's unable to perform the way she should. She's really good.
James Carville
Oh, yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And really good.
James Carville
And I think is really good to watch. I think she's got three slam matches.
Tony Kornheiser
She's got three. Yeah, she's got three. The other match yields the greatest story in tennis. Amanda Anisimova. Let's go back a little over a month. Let's go back to the final at Wimbledon where she is playing Igush vontek. She loses six love. Six love. In those 12 games, she only wins 24 points. She gets double bagel. She gets routed. It's total destruction.
Jeff Ma
Bethesda bagel special.
Tony Kornheiser
Total destruction. And she's crying during the ceremony, as am I, as is everyone, because heart wrenching. She just. She got to the finals at Wimbledon and got blown out of the tub. And in about a month later that. No, Wimbledon is the most important tournament in the world. About a month later, they hold the US Open, the second most important tournament of the world. And it turns out that she ends up playing Witek again. And if you want to talk about, you know, mental strength, she preps for that match by watching what happened to her in Wimbledon.
Jeff Ma
But to be fair, was under an hour.
Tony Kornheiser
It was 57 minutes. So the short. It was awful. Yeah, it was just awful. And she beat Witek in straight sets. I think she would have been happy to win three or four games. She won 12. She beats Phionic. This is the greatest turnaround, I think, ever in tennis. I mean, I think it was 100 years since anybody was double bagel.
James Carville
Yes, yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Then she wins the very next time she plays. Witek is not some plumber. She's got six majors. She's got them on every surface, right?
James Carville
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
And Anna Samova beats her. That's fabulous. And then she plays Wilbond's fave, Osaka, Naomi Osaka. Wilbon can't stop talking about how great Osaka is.
James Carville
He's a big fan.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. And she beats Osaka. She loses the first set last night and she beats Osaka. And now she's in the finals against Sabalenka, a very powerful, accomplished player with three majors. And maybe she'll get routed. I hope it's not oh, and oh no, maybe she'll get routed. I just think that what she has done. There are almost no words to describe this kind of turnaround, this kind of comeback. We should be carrying this woman around on a chair, right? Absolutely. What have we seen this in?
Jeff Ma
Well, even last night, you look at how the first set ended, where it looked like she was going to actually win it before it got to the tie break. And then you start to see double faults and clanking backhands into the net. And I didn't see that second set turnaround.
James Carville
Just, it's remarkable.
Jeff Ma
Literally didn't see it because it was.
James Carville
Too late, because it's all her.
Tony Kornheiser
Everything, everything ended last night at 2 in the morning. I wasn't up for any of it. Yeah, thank God for replay for any of that.
James Carville
But it's all her. It's not like if you lose in the super bowl, well, there's a lot of players share the blame, we improve the line.
Tony Kornheiser
It's all her.
James Carville
And, and to come around that quickly, sort of embrace it and say, all right, it happened. Let me learn from that.
Tony Kornheiser
And she. How can you not root for her? How can you not root for her? Yeah, I never even heard of her before Wimbledon.
James Carville
I forget.
Tony Kornheiser
Amanda Anisova.
James Carville
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
I think born in Jersey, in Florida.
James Carville
Yes, that's right. Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
But raised in Florida.
James Carville
Raised in Florida.
Tony Kornheiser
I think I read that. Yeah, we got to root for her. Just tremendous. And the semi finals are today.
James Carville
Yeah.
Jeff Ma
Three o'.
Tony Kornheiser
Clock. Sinner is facing the kid from Canada.
James Carville
Yeah. O.J. alexim.
Tony Kornheiser
Nobody really thinks he's going to win.
James Carville
No, probably not.
Tony Kornheiser
But the other match is Alcaraz and Djokovic. And, and by the way, and I don't like Djokovic, everybody knows that. And Djokovic is 38 and I find it hard to believe he could get through both Alcaraz and Sinner. I, I find that hard to believe. But he's 30 on hard court against, against Alcaraz, so don't, you know, don't cast him off into the bull rushes Yet, I mean, he's probably got the.
Jeff Ma
Power of the Sasha boys behind him now.
Tony Kornheiser
By the way, Osaka, she'd never been beaten before in a situation like this.
James Carville
Like in the quarters.
Tony Kornheiser
He got. Yeah. To the quarters or the semis. In, in a major. She won it.
James Carville
Yeah, she won it 130 or something like that going into that, you know.
Tony Kornheiser
So I just, it's, I didn't see any of it. I mean, and it was on too late. It ended at one in the morning.
James Carville
Yeah, the second match was.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, but it's, it's a tremendous.
James Carville
It was a great night of tennis.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. All right, we'll get out of here. As I said, we're all football today. We have Jason Locanfora, we have James Carville, we have Jeff Ma. We will come back with lock and fora. I am Tony Kornheiser.

This is called Steel City Revival. It's by a band called Neon Dijon. Not Neon Dion. Neon Dijon. As in Dijon Mustard, I assume. Evan Michael Beyondo sends a. And I last emailed you years ago on the off chance you might actually play a song for my band at the time, back in 2018 on your wonderful show, I was completely shocked when in what seemed like less than a day, I received an email that confirmed the song would be played. I screenshot recorded you saying my name playing our song for me to keep forever because truly something I couldn't have imagined. I still listen to the show religiously. Even when you talk about golf and tennis, which I don't care about, I can't help but listen and learn. Of course I'm always interested in Nats talk. This keeps me following the bass player season. If I'm not watching, I've sent you songs from my current band called Neon Dijon. This is Steel City Revival. We are an Anderson, South Carolina trio. Jason Hanold, Andy Jones and myself performing our own version, what we consider rock and roll. Our album Indistinct chatter came out August 15th. Plays in Jason Lock and Fora. I don't know how you start with anything other than the spitting incident. I just. What in God's name was that?
Jason Lockinfora
I don't know, brother. That's a new one for me. You can try to account for injuries, you can try to account for weather. And we obviously had those impact this game as well. But I mean one of the three most important players in that game.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Lockinfora
Getting himself removed before for the game we had a kickoff. Eagles lose their fullback and then they lose their, you know, maybe the best defensive tackle in football. I mean there's still some projection involved in that, but if this young man were to pick up anywhere close to where he left off last year, we're talking about, you know, a defensive player of the year candidate. And I mean, yeah, that, that's. It was a bizarro world game really. Honestly, like things just kept happening. Yeah. You know, week one we tend to forget how bizarre and janky it can be and how out of sorts and out of sync some of these teams and players can be and coaches. I don't think he's going to get suspended the league.
Tony Kornheiser
We just lost an entire game. That is a suspension, right?
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah. I mean now we can Debate whether that was paid or unpaid and I'm sure there'll be a hefty fine. But yeah, look, they've got the Chiefs looming. I think he'll be available to play that game. Boy, it's just to even be that close to their huddle at the start of the season or whatever. It's, it really. I think what it tells us is they need Big Dom on the field. They need Big Dom. Oh, the security guy holding coaches in play, Tony. But I think Big Dom, if he was allowed on the field during that timeout, Big Dom might have been able to make things all right.
Tony Kornheiser
Remember when he was thrown out of a game? Big Dom was fantastic.
Jason Lockinfora
That's why I bring it up.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Completely learned from that.
Jason Lockinfora
How often, say Jalen Carter from himself?
Tony Kornheiser
How often? Now it doesn't happen in an isolated visual shot like this of a guy spitting at another guy, but how regularly do you think that happens in the pile, you know, in, in the, in the scrum? How often?
Jason Lockinfora
I don't think, I don't think that's a supernatural act. Like I, I don't think that comes easily for a lot. I don't. I mean I've talked to a lot of players over a lot of years. I think, you know, a squeeze, a grab, a punch in the junk, spitting. I, okay. I don't think it's super regular. And certainly there, I mean, where it's a one window primetime game with every camera they could.
Tony Kornheiser
Unbelievable.
Jason Lockinfora
And it's the first friggin snap of the game and you know they're going to be in on the how on the huddle and anything around it like, and the whole officiating crew is right there. I mean that's a brain cramp. That's terrible decision making of an epic level. And it almost cost them like it almost cost them the game. That game, there's no doubt in my mind was as close as it was because the first two series without him there, the, the, the, the Cowboys like, well, let's see if we have a, like we probably don't have a run game, but we might have one now. And sure enough, the middle of the field was, was wide open. And eventually Vic Fangio realized, hey, without my, without my, you know, gravitational force, without the moon, I better blitz, I better, I better Jerry rig some pressure, I better mix some things up. And he got around to it. And when he did, that was the version of Dallas that I expected to see. But in the meantime, the Eagles had a chase. Part of that game in part because their defense fell apart for the first half without him.
Tony Kornheiser
Was there, was there anything from that game where you say to yourself, I wasn't expecting this? I guess I'm asking were the Eagles better or worse than you thought? Were the Cowboys better or worse?
Jason Lockinfora
Filter for Carter getting chucked. You know what I mean? Like you for a lot of things, him being chucked right before the first offensive snap of the game, that, that's, I mean, so that's a really big deal. Now look, I think what's not being talked about probably enough is okay, the Eagles want to get by with, you know, breaking in one new guard. Okay. And then Dickerson has a meniscus repair like three weeks before the season, but. And his back's jacked up, but. And then he leaves. Like, I, I don't know that they're going to be able to bully people quite like they did last year. You know, these things tend to be standalone a lot of these seasons and you have to reinvent yourself. And it was just a one game sample size. And Dallas certainly selling out to stop the run.
Tony Kornheiser
Yep.
Jason Lockinfora
And we can argue whether the Eagles should have been checking into some different things and testing them a little bit more. And obviously A.J. brown literally almost go in that entire game without showing up at all is odd. But I'm. If like Dickerson didn't even really look, I don't know how he was out there in the first place and now you're replacing both guards and I just think the margins can start to get a little slimmer. And I'm just wondering if they're going to be able to bludgeon everybody they face at the point of attack on both sides of the ball like they did last year. I think that will bear a little monitoring.
Tony Kornheiser
There are a bunch of games this weekend and it's sort of like the college football season that opened with fabulous games. There are fabulous games. Baltimore at Buffalo is the number one game. Minnesota @ Chicago, Detroit at Green Bay. I would even say, for the curiosity of your favorite player and Wilbond's favorite player, Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh at the Jets. But are any of those games, are you looking specifically at something in any of those games? Because those are great games. Even Kansas. I don't. Well, I'll ask. Let me just ask you this first. Why is the NFL in Brazil?
Jason Lockinfora
Money, Greed.
Tony Kornheiser
What?
Jason Lockinfora
I mean, it's, it's.
Tony Kornheiser
Is there a long term plan?
Jason Lockinfora
Sell as many jerseys, hot dogs, beers, subscription packages, you know, the, the international version of Sunday ticket. The Brazilian TV rights become worth more Money, like it's, it's just, it's a huge population center that has massive stadiums that, you know, they believe there, they believe, you know, China, they believe Germany, they believe, you know, Mexico. There's, there's. Eventually you can only go so far in the US and so it's just, it's just a pure, it's purely money. Like, I wouldn't, I wouldn't overthink it. What do I. So you want to.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, let's go back to those games, those games that I was mentioning.
Jason Lockinfora
Sure. I mean, you know, tonight I know the Chargers drafted a tackle to replace a tackle, but I don't know that alt comes in any Slater from day one. And I do wonder about the interior of their offensive line. You know, that's a weird field surface and it played heavily, heavily, heavily to the offensive players last year. I think it probably will again here. But, you know, I'm interested to see Chris Jones, who had a more pedestrian season than normal a year ago for the most part. You know, is he able to send a message to the interior of that Chargers offensive line tonight? You know, does hardball play it as conservatively as he did the first half of last year? Does he pick up more towards the second half where they were at least taking more play action shots? I tend to think we're going to get points again. I think the surface of that stadium is a really big deal. It was a really big deal a year ago and I think the NFL is just fine with 40 to 38. Like I think they kind of like that. So I'm not sure that that field surface is going to change exponentially. My guy, Aaron Rodgers, I like him in this spot, Tony. I like Steelers on the money line. Not as much value there as there was before. That's one we give out all spring long or want to bet. And I think my guy might throw a couple touchdown passes in that one. He is petty, he is vindictive. He holds a grudge.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Lockinfora
And he's the offensive coordinator, not Arthur Smith. Don't get it twisted. So I think he feels like there are some corners there with the jets, including one really, really highly paid one that you can pick on a little bit. You know, I think Aaron Rodgers will, He did throw 18 touchdowns to four interceptions his final 10.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, he did. It was very good. His numbers were very good.
Jason Lockinfora
And I think this is a better, I honestly think even offensive skill position players, it's a better group because I think this version of Warren can be better than the version of Breece. Hall that he had. I'm buying him and John Smith a big tight end like that. They were. Jets really kind of tried to Jerry rigged the tight end position last year. You know, I think Metcalf is going to be effective for him and the jets losing their best offensive linemen like the poor jets, so. And I think this Pittsburgh defense is one we're going to be talking about a lot this year. So I think Rogers is in a good spot to hit the ground running there. I do think the Ravens can win in Buffalo in the regular season. Playoffs is a different story. You know, they're without their fullback, Pat Ricard. I'm just going to be really interested to see if they still try to play booty ball. They're also without one of their tight ends, Isaiah likely. Do they still get into a lot of jumbo sets? I kind of think you might see a sixth offensive lineman pop up a fair amount for the Ravens if they do try to go, you know, and just push those guys around the way they did in the regular season meeting in Baltimore. We all remember Mark Andrews was the goat.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, playoff game.
Jason Lockinfora
He had two drops and the fumble. I suspect Mark Andrews shows up in a pretty positive way. Maybe even Mark Andrews first Ravens touchdown type play. You know, he's tight with Lamar. Lamar takes care of his guys there. Like I said, there is no Isaiah Likely. And the Bills appear to be pretty beat up defensively right now. And there's some questions being asked about them. I think this is the kind of regular season game where the Ravens tend to. To flex their muscles.
Tony Kornheiser
I want to ask this question, not having any idea what the answer is, which is unusual for me because I usually have some sense of it. Detroit, which was a very good team the last couple of years, they didn't get to the super bowl, but they. They were good. They lost both their coordinators. One is now coaching the jets and one is now coaching the Bears. In your experience, is that important? Is that a big deal?
Jason Lockinfora
I think it's is my inclination was that it is. And that's one of the topics that I kind of knew back in June I was going to explore in the Washington Post. And I just started right as I talked to people during their vacations. You know, one of the questions I would sort of just throw at some of my guys is, hey, how. How big of an effing deal is that? And. And everybody I talked to emphatically was like, I wouldn't want to have like there by the grace of God go. I like I You know, I. I can tell you, three years ago, we lost one of our guys we didn't want to lose, and it threw us off, you know, like it. So I think it is a big deal now. I also. All those same people would say, look, Dan Campbell has built a culture there where it's us against the world every play, and, you know, he can find a way to use this as a motivating thing, and we think his culture is good enough and his team is good enough that, you know, they might not fall off a cliff the way we've seen some other teams fall off a cliff, say, if they just lost one coordinator in their center. You know, they also lost their center, who had a lot to do with the sort of rebirth of Jared Goff. And really kind of, I think, took a lot off of Goff in terms of what had to be said at the line of scrimmage, et cetera. So I think the combination of those three elements is significant. Look, they've had Green Bay's number. Jordan Love does not. I'm a big Jordan Love guy. He does not play well against Detroit. Detroit's kind of been problem for them, and frankly, the packers were great outside the division last year, but couldn't win in it. So I think it's Green Bay's division. I don't know that that's going to play out week one. If you're inclined to be on the packers like me, I'd say, look, wait, they might lose this game. Some of these futures might tip even more in your favor because everything's tipped back towards Green Bay because of the Park Parsons trade. You know, I might let this play out and then look at the scenarios.
Musical Guest / Performer
But.
Jason Lockinfora
But I do think Green Bay and I thought this strongly before the Parsons trade is going to be the team to beat in that division. That coach is legitimate. I think the quarterback was never healthy last year, in part because of that field he played on in Brazil Week one. I like the receiving core that they've put together. Now, the defense people said there's not enough individual pass rush. Well, I think they checked that box with Parsons and it was. Look, there was only a couple teams in this league last year. I think there were three teams that were in the top seven. And points allowed offensively per play and points produced, or points produced offensively per play and points allowed defensively. Three finished in the top seven in both those categories. One was the Ravens, one was the Eagles, and one was the packers, and that was with a rookie defensive coordinator at the time. So this might be a bad matchup for Green Bay, but I think over the course of 18 weeks, that brain drain will cost the Lions a few more games than they're accustomed to losing.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, plug your betting show for us. Plug that show.

You'Re listening to the Tony Kornheiser show.
Tony Kornheiser
Why are we playing this? We're playing this. It's the Beach Boys off pet sounds. Fantastic song.
Jason Lockinfora
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
We're playing this because James Carville now wants this not midnight special this year this sloop John B. As his walk up music and this week's picks with James Carville and Jeff Ma are brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook. Make every moment more. Last week Carville declined to make any picks but he did say this one thing. He said get on the over on South Carolina. How many games they're supposed to win and we determined it was seven and a half so the over would be eight. And they came out. They were the best team in the country last year. How did you know that?
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah, a good quarterback like to beat us last year and just kind of word around. We're going to be pretty good.
Tony Kornheiser
Wow. I was so impressed.
Jason Lockinfora
And we have, we play them so.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
Particularly interested in them.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. Yeah. Lsu. Well it's the same. It's. It's the southeast conference. So you play.
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
All right. All right. So you've had a week to look. You saw Belichick fall on his face. You saw DeBoer fall on his face. You saw your alma mater win on the road against I think a pretty good team. Clemson. I think they're pretty good. What do you got for us?
Jason Lockinfora
Well. All right. Here we go. I'll sloop John B. Here we're a little shaken head down a fight all night Bowling green. Cincinnati. Cincinnati is a 21 point favorite. I would take Cincinnati.
Tony Kornheiser
You take Cincinnati minus 21.
Jason Lockinfora
I would. Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
Cincinnati minus 21.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
Kansas is playing Mizzou.
Tony Kornheiser
Kansas, Missouri. Uh huh.
Jason Lockinfora
Missouri is minus six and a half. I would take Mizzou.
Tony Kornheiser
Take Mizzou not Kansas. Take Mizzou.
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah. I've been spending my whole life bet against Kansas. I'd be really wealthy.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes. Until last year and then the year before They've gotten better.
Jason Lockinfora
Pretty good in New Mexico State, in Tulsa. I think that New Mexico State and Tulsa is minus five.
Tony Kornheiser
Huh?
Jason Lockinfora
I would take Tulsa.
Tony Kornheiser
Take Tulsa. Even on the road. Take Tulsa.
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
Yep. All right. The jets plus three.
Tony Kornheiser
Steelers, Pittsburgh at Jets. And it's three. Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
Dealers are plus three.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
James Carville
Yes. Yeah, I've actually got Jets.
Jason Lockinfora
Jets are plus three.
Tony Kornheiser
Who do you want?
Jason Lockinfora
I want the Jets.
Tony Kornheiser
You. Do you want Aaron Rodgers coming in? You don't think Aaron Rodgers is going to win that game?
Jason Lockinfora
You know, I don't know. Okay, okay, okay.
Tony Kornheiser
Short answer. Okay, go ahead.
Jason Lockinfora
Now you have Joe Barr, Cincinnati Browns. The Browns are plus six. That's too many. You got to take the Browns.
Tony Kornheiser
Take the Browns over Joe Burrow, who you love.
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah. Worship.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, okay.
Jason Lockinfora
He got win again about four points.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
And then the Ravens plus one. Buffalo.
Tony Kornheiser
Huh?
Jason Lockinfora
The Ravens.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. We had one and a half.
James Carville
Yeah, we give you one and a half.
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah, we'll take the point.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, we'll give you one and a half. Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
Okay. And that's it.
Tony Kornheiser
That's it. Six picks for week one.
Jason Lockinfora
We're coming back, man.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. We're excited about this. Thank you, James. We wish you all the luck in the world. So we'll get Jeff Ma on the line at the moment. But James, last week he. First of all, he picked the Heisman Trophy winner. Right. He picked the LSU guy.
James Carville
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
To win the Heisman.
James Carville
That's right.
Tony Kornheiser
He didn't win it last week. I mean, he was okay, but he wasn't great last week. But he's talked about South Carolina, which I had never heard him talk about before, and he said take the over.
Jeff Ma
And I like that he's starting with the season long bets.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Take the over in terms of how many games they're going while we're waiting.
Jeff Ma
For Jeff and I wonder if he's going to talk about the Walker cup, but we have a new Johnny Oko TK Yak Y A C. Time to yak it up. And their marketing team. Fantastic. Last night I was checking out their Instagram. They were promoting their short sleeve rain jackets. The rain. The packable rain jacket with the Dallas Cowboys logo.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, I'm never.
Jason Lockinfora
During the rain.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, during the rain.
Jeff Ma
Actually, this was from the earlier incident.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, okay. Spit. Oh, the spitting. That kind of rain.
Jeff Ma
But you could bring it back out for the. The rain delay.
Tony Kornheiser
Yak yards. You have to catch. Do we have Jeff?
James Carville
We do indeed.
Tony Kornheiser
Jeff Ma is with us right now. There's a. Before we get to Jeff's picks Jeff sends us every week things that he would talk about. And so I write them down. And this, the first one is very interesting to me, and that is about betting college games early in the year. The last year and this year, college football has changed because of the transfer portal. Bill Belichick has 70 players who did not play last year, and he didn't coach there, obviously, at North Carolina, but Deion brought in 50 players a few years ago in Colorado. This happens with regularity. It happens with quarterbacks all the time. Are you more inclined, Jeff, to bet college games early or more inclined to sit and wait because you're just not form from last year that you can follow?
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah, I mean, I think that's a good argument because I think ultimately you're always trying to find inefficiencies in a market, and when there is information that can be interpreted differently by different people, there are pretty big opportunities for inefficiency. And so you have a situation, as you've mentioned, where there's quite a bit of turnover every year. In the past, you've used. Basically, a team like Georgia is going to be the same somewhat from year to year. A team like Miami will be the same from year to year. But this year there's. There's a lot of teams now that are really embracing the portal and moving guys around. And so it's not just nil. It's not. It's nil and the portal together, which create just this movement. So, like, even a team we had, Bill Connolly on, who we've talked about, who does SP plus for, for espn, he was talking about a team like Texas Tech as an interesting team that has a lot of money, has brought a lot of players in, and could be an interesting dark horse because of the players that they brought in. And again, part of this is like, people don't know how good the players that they brought in are. You know, in the case of unc, it looked like there was a pretty big talent mismatch even though he brought in 50 new players. So, yeah, I think I'm inclined to look for those opportunities because I think there can be pretty big inefficiencies.
Tony Kornheiser
So. So you think. So you're saying to me, no, you jump in early as opposed to you wait three weeks and then jump in again.
Jason Lockinfora
Like, I think if you have a thesis around your ability to understand this player movement better than others, again like that, there are many ways to try to do this. You can look at what these players were from a recruiting standpoint when they came into College and use that as a proxy. It's just hard because when they were at these other schools, they transferred probably because they weren't getting a lot of playing time. And if they weren't getting a lot of playing time, there's not a lot of data about how good they are. So again, I think everyone's trying to figure this out. But when there is, when there is new information, new data, your ability to interpret that and turn that into some sort of analytics better than other people is going to be an opportunity to win money.
Tony Kornheiser
Are you seeing a greater parity in college football or does the Portal and the NIL combined make for a greater disparity in college football?
Jason Lockinfora
I mean, what it's looking like now is that there's greater parity. Again, I referencing SP plus going into this year, I think the top 12 teams in that rating system, which is known to be one of the best, were only about 7 point difference. It's thought that a lot of the teams this year, there's no number one. There's a lot of three and four seeds. And that's a lot of what people said last year. And then it obviously emerged that Ohio State was certainly a super team. So I think there is parity. I mean, I think one of the biggest things is that like a team like Georgia used to be able to stock their team from, you know, from number one to number 50 were all sort of like four and five star recruits. Now their ability to get those guys that are going to sit on the bench and make them continue at Georgia, this is not the case. So those, those super teams are just not as deep. They're definitely more prone to injuries than they have been in the past. And even just practice isn't as productive when you don't have four and five star recruits as backups.
Tony Kornheiser
I will, I will shift from college to the pros. The biggest player movement obviously is Micah Parsons going from Dallas to Green Bay. Everybody, as soon as it happened, everybody jumped on Green Bay and said, oh, Green Bay, big boomlet because of that. What is your sense the impact will be of that?
Jason Lockinfora
Yeah, it's interesting because I think that going into last night I thought the market was probably correct, that the impact would be pretty big. You know, if you looked at the on off splits for Micah Parsons at Dallas, they were pretty substantial.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh yeah.
Jason Lockinfora
Oh yeah.
And you know, it seemed like Dallas was a team even if even without Michael Parsons, that had been aging. They had been built on like a very strong offensive line over the last few years. That offensive Line was getting worse. Dak is not a mobile quarterback anymore. He doesn't really run. You know, they lost running backs. The running backs seem pretty pedestrian and. But they played really well last night. So if you only look at a sample size of one, you feel like, oh, well, maybe it's not going to matter quite as much. You know, they were. They were. You were asleep, I'm sure. But they were two or three. CD Lamb drops away from easily.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, yeah.
Jason Lockinfora
So I think generally the rule would be the market tends to overreact to things like that. I think understanding the player, a player, an individual player's impact on a team in the NFL is very, very hard. And a lot of it depends on position. We had a guy by the name of Judah Forten getting on BET the process this week who does a lot of analysis of what he calls, like these weak link and strong link positions. Meaning, you know, like a weak link position means you need to have like, really good, like, players that are of a certain floor, whereas a strong link position means you need to have the best player at that position. So something like edge rusher is more a strong link position. And if you have two edge rushers, that's even better. And I'll talk about that in a second. But in this situation, they lost a strong edge rusher. It didn't seem like they had much to back him up, but. And they didn't get great pressure last night. So maybe that will have a meaningful impact going forward.
Tony Kornheiser
All right, pick some games for us.
Jason Lockinfora
All right.
In college, I'm just going to take one college game. If you look again at SP plus as a rating system, seems like UNLV and UCLA are equal. They're playing at UNLV in Vegas and UNLV is getting two and a half points. So I'm going to take UNLV again. I think part of this is, like, you look at a team like UCLA and the reputation is that they'd be much better than a team like unlv. But UNLV has been a solid team in this nil era and the talent disparity is probably not nearly what it has been in the past. I'll take UNLV plus the two and a half.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. What else? In the pros.
Jason Lockinfora
And then in the pros we have some interesting games. We have. Atlanta is a team. I think that many people are talking about being a bit underrated, especially on offense. Obviously going from Cousins to Penix. Cousins was terrible last year. Penix in a very small sample size was a very Good quarterback in structure. One of the best in structure. And as long as they can protect him and with the running game that they have and the weapons they have, I think they might have an incredibly underrated offense. I'm going to take them plus the two and a half over Tampa Bay.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Lockinfora
And then another underrated team. And we mentioned edge rushers is. Are the Giants. The Giants have edge rushers all over the place that, you know, the thought is that they're not going to be very good because of what they're doing on offense and what they have at quarterback. But I think this defense is going to be very good. I think they will give the commies some trouble and I think that, you know, getting seven, six and a half there is a good play on the Giants.
Tony Kornheiser
You'll take the Giants. Okay. What else?
Jason Lockinfora
I'm going to take Miami plus the one over Indianapolis. Again, like when you come into these seasons, there's all these narratives about these teams being much worse and all that kind of stuff. And it's hard to understand why people are saying that about Miami. McDaniels still what I consider to be a great offensive coach who knows how to scheme things up. And as long as two has been healthy, that offense has been very good. And so again, that's a big if. But going into week one with a healthy two, I'm going to take Miami plus one over Indy.
James Carville
I actually have it at one and a half. Would you like to take it?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, sure.
Jason Lockinfora
Sure.
We don't have to answer. We don't have to ask those kind of questions this year. I'll always take the more points.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. You got another one for us? You got one more.
Jason Lockinfora
And I'm going to take Jacksonville minus the three and a half over Carolina. For some reason I'm with this Liam Cohen and you know, Trevor Lawrence hopefully being, you know, finally having some time to realize his talent and having a strong, you know, coaching, etc. I'm like sucked into this idea that Jacksonville could be much better this year. They got pretty unlucky last year and did some pretty dumb stuff at the beginning of the year. And I think Carolina is going to struggle obviously again this year. So I like Jacksonville minus three and a half.
Tony Kornheiser
By the way, are you on site? Are you going to the Walker Cup?
Jason Lockinfora
I am not.
I actually just got offered some tickets on Sunday. Yeah, I have a. I'm. I'm single parenting this weekend, Tony. Okay, so Walker cup is not in my. But yeah, that would be an amazing. I mean, I have a lot of friends that are headed down there and just.
It's.
Everyone's very excited about it.
Tony Kornheiser
Have you played Cyprus in your life?
Jason Lockinfora
I have played cypress.
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Good, huh?
Jason Lockinfora
It's one of the most. It's one of the most amazing golf experiences. Experiences.
Jeff Ma
How'd you do in 15 and 16?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, 15 and 16. How'd you do?
Jason Lockinfora
I. I pard 15. No, wait, 15 is the long part. No, 16 is the 16 is the long one.
Jeff Ma
You can't. You really can't hit it over.
Jason Lockinfora
I pared 16.
Tony Kornheiser
Whoa.
Jason Lockinfora
Driver on 16. And part it. One of my playing partners actually birdied 16, so that was. That was very. And then 15. I think I bogeyed.
Yeah.
So the most amazing thing about Cyber. So obviously 6, 16 and 15. 16, 17 feels like the best nature walk you've ever been on in your life. And you happen to just be holding golf club, or you're not holding golf clubs. The caddies are. But you happen to be playing golf. It's I think five, which is that amazing hole where you basically see all of these bunkers and then you go to the green and you turn around and you see none of those bunkers. And I don't know if you know the story behind Alistair Mackenzie, like, loving the idea of camouflage and kind of loving the idea. And so the idea is like, you know, you can see the bunkers one way, but then you turn around and you never see them again.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know why I even do this show. Michael and Jeff should just talk about golf courses in America and all the things that they say. Be so good. Thank you, Jeff. We'll talk next week.
Jason Lockinfora
Thanks, guys.
Tony Kornheiser

Musical Guest / Performer
Here comes Tony. Smiley smile. Mad.
Tony Kornheiser
Banjo music and vocals from Joe and Molly Chambers. Very nice.
James Carville
Love the banjo.
Tony Kornheiser
Very, very upbeat. You want to do the Bethesda bagel ad?
James Carville
Yes, Bethesda bagels.
Tony Kornheiser
We love them.
James Carville
You will as well. Just go to bethesdabagos.com for the location in the DC area nearest you then pop one in and you'll be thrilled.
Tony Kornheiser
That'll just about do it for today. But before we get to the mailbag, let me just say, flew in from Miami Beach, BOAC didn't get to bed last night. On the way the paper bag was on my knee man, I had a dreadful flight. I'm back in the USSR you don't know how lucky you are, boy. Back in the USSR. That's a great song. That's a Paul McCartney song. Nobody even knows what BOAC is anymore. It's British Overseas Airways Company. No, nobody knows that. It's British Airways now. There's no USSR anymore, you know, but it's just, you know, it's just such a great song.
James Carville
I love that. When he played in Moscow, he played that song just so good.
Tony Kornheiser
So good. Thanks to our guests today, Jason Locke and for James Carville, Jeff, Ma. Thanks as well. Today's sponsors. Remember, you can listen us to on listen to us on Apple podcasts, Spotify and Audacy. If you get show through Apple, please leave us a review. Okay, here we go. Justin Johnson of Arlington, Virginia writes, we weren't supposed to take the potatoes out yet. Right. I just want to make sure I haven't missed anything, that we're all still on this adventure together. I said this in the open of the show. It won't be until at least September 15th. It might be after that. We may not get any potatoes at all.
James Carville
We don't know.
Tony Kornheiser
We. We don't know. We don't know.
Jeff Ma
Have you been watering?
Tony Kornheiser
No, I've done nothing. I've just. They're in the ground. I've done absolutely.
James Carville
We let mother nature do the work.
Tony Kornheiser
Right. And. Yeah. And I think it could be a disaster.
James Carville
Could be.
Tony Kornheiser
Although. Although, to be fair, although we do water the zucchini. They the zucchini from seed have produced 3,000 pounds of stuff. I don't know if any of it is edible, but it's £3,000 of stuff. It's giant stuff.
Jeff Ma
Some of the zucchini are too large. They're just to actually cut up and eat.
Tony Kornheiser
Just so unbelievable.
Jeff Ma
Like the rind on it is.
James Carville
Yeah, it looks like it should be at a 4H fair, doesn't it?
Tony Kornheiser
Unbelievable. Okay. Trace Thomas in Austin, Texas for John in Herndon, Virginia, Franklin Barbecue is actually in Austin, not in San Antonio. It is always towards the top of any list. It's a great choice, but there are plenty of other options and areas you mentioned Truth Barbecue in Houston, Interstellar LA Barbecue, or Leroy & Lewis in Austin 2M Smokehouse in San Antonio or go down to a barbecue haven in Lockhart, Texas, about 30 minutes southeast of Austin for several great choices including Barbs Barbecue, Smitty's and Blacks. You can also try Burnt Bean Company in Seguin. I hope I pronounced that correctly between Austin and San Antonio. Recently named number one on the Texas Monthly Top 50 Burnt Bean Co. Just be willing to get to any of these places early and know that you will be waiting in line for a while at most of them. Hope you find something you enjoy. I'm not much tennis fan but usually watch the Open. I happen to catch an ESPN tribute to Cliff Drysdale. All the ESPN tennis commentators were there on Wednesday afternoon and spoke about him with such love and inspiration that in his profession he was the goat. It was really very moving. DG Is he really retiring? Cliff Drysel he's really good. He's still really good. So why is he retiring?
James Carville
I He's.
Tony Kornheiser
Why aren't I retiring?
James Carville
What's about to say he's of a certain age, but you know, I don't know.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't know. He's really good.
James Carville
He's great and his voice is just comforting. You're like, this is what I associate with great tennis.
Tony Kornheiser
From Adam Van Brimmer, the Coastal Georgia Bureau Chief of the Atlanta Journal constitution okay, greetings Dr. Hofwa from Adam in Savannah, Georgia in regards to your recent mentions of Furman Bisher, I spent the better part of four years in the mid aught sitting next to him in the press box and on press row at Georgia Tech football and basketball games. I was a young beat writer who aspired to write columns and he showed remarkable patience and kindness with my endless questions and observations. I came to learn later that he asked the SID to sit him next to the youngsters. Part of the reason was he wasn't all that mobile by that point in his life and he knew he could lean on us if he needed something from the post game interviews. But the bigger reason was he understood his influence on the next generation and knew the lasting effect of that those interactions could have with those working in an industry that faced a challenging future. I now work in the same newsroom that the Bish once graced and think of them often. I'd invite you to join me for a scoop of coffee ice cream at Leopold's the next time you're in the low country to see the in laws. But no, I have a better chance of beating Michael in a Skins game at Harbor Town and I don't play golf than convincing you to meet up with a total stranger at a place where you have to wait in line for 30 minutes for a scoop. If it makes a difference, send me your order ahead of time and I'll do the queuing for you. I'll bribe the manager to let us eat next to the sink in the parlor's kitchen. Kind regards, Adam that's a wonderful, wonderful email. That is from Adam Van Brimmer, who was in Savannah, Georgia. By the way, they are advertising this new show that they say is like the office. Oh, the paper. Paper. It bothers me.
James Carville
I've watched it.
Jeff Ma
Have you written before?
Tony Kornheiser
It bothers me. I mean, it makes fun of and newspapers are dying and it just simply makes fun of them. It might not have bothered me 20 years ago, but it bothers me.
James Carville
There are a few points where like journalism, like there's some brief shining moments of newspapers in a glory. He goes down and sees a printing press and you sort of like, oh, that's very cool. But yeah, I'm not sure you you would like it.
Tony Kornheiser
A haiku for John Wall. Not jersey worthy. The spirit of compromise. Socks from the rafters. Justin Whaley. That's from Shad, of course. Justin Whaley in. In Olathe, Kansas or Lathe, Kansas. I don't know how to pronounce it. If John Wall were born and raised on the south side of Chicago, I know a particular person would make a strong case for having John Wall's jersey retired by the Wizards. Derrick Rose is having his jersey retired by the Bulls while averaging an impressive 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. Derrick Rose is the MVP in the league?
James Carville
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Who's the MVP in the league?
James Carville
This is a little different.
Tony Kornheiser
Was John Wall. John Wall the MVP in the league? No. And Eric? Derrick Rose had his injury. Had his career cut short by injuries. John Wall did not. No. Well, had his career cut short by people not wanting him to play. Right. Paying him to not play. Yeah. Tony T. In Brooklyn. In Brooklyn, D.C. this one's probably too long. As a dog lover, Tom Mosser's email was kind of emotional. My sixth and seventh dogs, Daisy and Archie, are eating the couch as I type. That email was extra emotional because we just dropped off the oldest at Pitt for her freshman year. All kinds of feelings. Speaking of Pittsburgh, of course, there's a bartender's angle. I worked at a Steelers bar for a good stretch. Continuous good natured banter about D.C. versus Pittsburgh as a hometown one night off season. A gang of my Steelers regulars came through the bar. Yeah, I talked a lot of trash. The next night, a few of them came back. Dude, you realize that was Jerome Bettis you were busting on last night? Whoa. Not as cool as bartending for the Indianapolis crew members, but still. Here's the dogs. Kids growing up and being a DC Homer through and through. Very nice email from Rich Barajas in El Paso, Texas. As I watched Amanda Anisimova beat Inga Swiontech 4 and 3 after your humiliating double bagel loss at Wimbledon a couple of months ago, for some reason, I thought of you. The next time you're in a bunker after years and years and years and years of not being able to get the ball out, think of Ana Samova and how she overcame humiliation and succeeded after failure. You can do it. Or just pick the ball up and don't play out of the sand because it sounds like you really stink. Come on, we're not pros. It's not that big a deal like that. From Jim in Lutherville. Lutherville is Maryland. Maryland? Isn't that where Pam Shriver was born and raised? Lutherville, Maryland. Commodore Tony. If you liked Jose Ferreira in the closer role, you'll absolutely love him in the Cane Mutiny. That's very funny. The actor, of course. And from Patrick Sitter in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In this engrossing episode of The Tony Kornheiser Show, Tony is joined by regulars Jason La Canfora, James Carville, and Jeff Ma for a characteristically wide-ranging and lively discussion. The conversation kicks off with NFL Week One reactions, pivots to tennis (notably a historic US Open women’s match), detours into community notes about the Bethesda Row Arts Festival and Syracuse Mets, then dives right back into football with deep-dive game analysis, predictions, and betting wisdom. Regular humor, personal anecdotes, and the unique camaraderie between the cast make for an entertaining listen.
Brisk, humorous, and highly conversational, the show blends sports insight with playful digressions and affection for the show community. Listeners get sharp football analysis, remarkable tennis stories, betting wisdom, and enough in-jokes and guest chemistry to feel like they’re part of the inner circle.
Listeners will come away entertained and informed, with memorable moments from both the sports world and the unique world of Tony and friends.
