Tony Kornheiser
Previously on the Tony Cornhauser Show.
Jason La Canfora
You gave us a chunk of bread, did you? Oh, I had the boys lined up like pigeons that I handed out.
Tony Kornheiser
How great it was. Great it was. That's all I'm saying.
Jason La Canfora
There is one. You would not remember this. You brought home a bread when I was a kid and you left it on the counter. And over the course of an afternoon I went up and I slowly picked out all the inside of the bread, leaving the outer crust.
Jason Locke
Really perfect crime.
Jason La Canfora
Yes. Until Tony found it. You were as angry as if someone opened up your ginger ale in the fridge.
Tony Kornheiser
This is General George Washington and you're listening to the Tony Kornheiser. It was a great bread. Elizabeth's bread was a great bread.
Michael
Phenomenal.
Jason La Canfora
You would always test the ginger ale to make sure it had the carbonation.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I mean, I don't drink much soda, you know, but when you do,
Michael
you want it to be carbonated.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. It's like, who's that? The smartest man in the world.
Michael
Oh, yeah. I don't often drink beer, but when
Tony Kornheiser
I do, it's those.
Jason La Canfora
The most interesting man.
Tony Kornheiser
Most interesting man.
Michael
Who's back, by the way.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Michael
Great campaign.
Tony Kornheiser
Ginger ale. Yeah. And sometimes orange soda.
Jason La Canfora
Orange soda. Well, that's only at games. Were you a Schweppes guy or Canada Dry?
Tony Kornheiser
I started out as a kid with Canada Dry because it was the only ginger ale I ever saw. As I got older, I went to Schweppes and Seagrams. And they are indistinguishable for me. I like them both very, very much. Schweppes and Seagrams. Yeah, it's fine. So I would buy whatever. I'm now buying those minis. They're about 5 ounces.
Pat 40
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
You know, and. And eating a pretzel with them. And it's a new routine for me. Like a.
Pat 40
It's good routine.
Tony Kornheiser
The Uncle Jerry's Pretzels, that's your after school snack. Yeah, that's pretty much it. And so I really like that. All right. A lot of things to talk about. Nothing important, but a lot of things. World Baseball Classic is going to get underway pretty soon. There is the fear factor with the pitchers.
Michael
Oh, sure.
Tony Kornheiser
A couple of great pitchers. A lot of really good pitchers. And Skubal and Skeens are going to pitch. And their teams are afraid. Their teams are afraid because there's an emotional component to this. Because you're wearing the United States on your jersey. There's an emotional component that's going to get you to rear back and throw harder than you normally would in spring training at this time. So, I mean, I'm happy that they want a pitch.
Michael
Who was the kid from the Mets? That wasn't. It was celebrating after a win. Yes.
Jason La Canfora
Oh, yes.
Tony Kornheiser
He was out for the whole year after the whole year. The World Baseball Classic means more to baseball players than it means to us.
Michael
Probably means more.
Tony Kornheiser
And what came around last time was the end of the World Baseball Classic. It was Japan against the United States. And Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout.
Michael
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And that's why Scuba and Skeens want to pitch. That's why. Because that's an indelible moment. So I understand how that would. Nobody's worried about their everyday players. Their everyday players are playing like it's spring training. Maybe they're a little bit more jacked up. But you worry about pitchers. You worry about. Because pitchers tear their arms, you know, when everything's being protected. So you worry about that. That should be fun. Some of it should be fun to watch. How about. Trae Young hasn't played a minute for the Wizards and got tossed out of a game.
Michael
Off to a great start.
Tony Kornheiser
Tossed out of a game. Now, his debut is supposedly tomorrow night against the Utah Jazz, the two worst teams, both of whom are trying to lose. So this could end up as like a 9190 game. And we'll see if Trae Young's any good.
Jason La Canfora
And then running clock at the end.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason La Canfora
We'll see.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, right. Like a scrimmage in high school. We'll see if Trae Young wants to continue to play with the Washington Wizards. We'll know by the end of the year if he plays all the rest of the games or if he comes up with an injury and he's in street clothes next to Anthony. Street clothes. Davis. Right.
Jason La Canfora
All about being a good teammate.
Tony Kornheiser
So, you know, we'll see. We'll see how, how that works. I was very disappointed yesterday in the clouds and the rain. Oh, you couldn't see light snow. I could not see the full moon. No, the, you know, you know, the scarlet moon because it was a total lunar eclipse. Couldn't see it. I guess you could. I don't know where it was visible mostly in North America, but I thought maybe in the east coast, but I'm not sure even of that. I'm sure some of our listeners saw it. Yes. Was a blood. Was called a blood moon.
Michael
The blood moon.
Jason La Canfora
Yes.
Michael
And it was visible around 6, 6:30am yesterday?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, I was up, but it was not. You were outside raining? Yeah, it was not visible here in Washington. Not visible. So that's the way it goes. But it gets me to one of my favorite topics. One of the things that makes me very angry. I just saw. I looked at a calendar yesterday, looking ahead to see what's going on this month. If there's anything I need to know in terms of, you know, my PTI schedule. And so I was comparing days with them. This Saturday night is daylight savings time. This Saturday night. What day is that? The seventh.
Michael
It feels early, doesn't it?
Tony Kornheiser
It's ridiculously early. Was it like now? I got up this morning. I'm telling you that this is going to be a shock to your system because it's not going to be.
Jason La Canfora
The first two weeks are.
Tony Kornheiser
It's awful. The first two weeks are awful. You walk the dog in total darkness. You need a flashlight. I'm going to ask you, as the father of three young children, would you rather have light in the evening or light in the morning when they're going to school?
Jason La Canfora
Oh, 100% in the evening, which is, I don't think where you're going.
Tony Kornheiser
Really.
Commercial Announcer 1
This.
Jason La Canfora
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
I wouldn't. I don't know.
Jason La Canfora
The big thing for us is you can get them outside after school. So the worst time is right before the holidays where you essentially get out of school and it gets dark. So it's a shock to the system, but it's all about routine. Getting into the bed at the Same time and just trying to get them out of bed, which is already hard enough because the big thing that you don't remember is the kids now have these shades that make their bedrooms tomb, like where nothing gets them.
Tony Kornheiser
I don't remember it because I don't know anything about it.
Jason La Canfora
I know, but like, it was something that we didn't have when I was a kid. You sort of woke up.
Tony Kornheiser
Blackout shades? Yeah. In a kid's bedroom?
Jason La Canfora
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
It's insane. Don't you want to look out the window and see what's going on?
Jason La Canfora
We open them during the day. What I find is it's hard when you sort of see the extra light and you think it should be warm and you still have weeks of it being cold and light at about 6:30 to 7.
Tony Kornheiser
So you and I differ on this completely. I would much rather have the light in the morning than at night in a transition period. Why can't they have daylight?
Jason La Canfora
If I had older kids and I was worried about them walking to the bus stop, that would be a different story.
Tony Kornheiser
Why can't they have daylight savings time April 1st or at the beginning of spring on March 21st? Why does it have to be on March 7th? Whose idea is this? Whoever it is, somebody is somebody in charge of this and the rest of the country goes along it. I think it's a. I hate it. There's two weeks of hatred for me because I'm out there.
Jason La Canfora
So it's a week and then you sort of get used to it. But if you were a local restaurateur and you could get people in for that, you know, patio happy hour and get people out enjoying shopping, walking the streets. But yes, it does feel too early.
Tony Kornheiser
Too early. March 7th. I can't believe it was always March 7th. First week in March. I mean, doesn't make sense to do it on calendar spring. Doesn't that make sense?
Jason La Canfora
Oh, we had meteorological spring that happened
Tony Kornheiser
already, but calendar spring, to me, that's what you ought to do. Well, I know we're going to get email on this because half the people think I'm an idiot and half the people agree.
Michael
So I'm seeing this. The Department of Transportation determines this. And apparently there was something since 2007 that says Daylight Savings Time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November, who
Tony Kornheiser
is the Secretary of Transportation.
Jason La Canfora
Now, aren't there some, like, some time zones where they don't necessarily follow all this?
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, there's a part in Texas, El Paso is different than Dallas, Phoenix only Has two time zones.
Michael
I think some bloke named Sean Duffy.
Tony Kornheiser
Can we call him? Get him on the horn? I mean, let. We got a couple of days. See if you can call them and make sense of that. There's.
Michael
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Now, Indiana has different time zones in it.
Michael
Yeah.
Jason La Canfora
For both changes. I feel like the first week after is when you have the most, you know, the most dangerous road conditions where people are just not used to it on their. On their body clock yet.
Tony Kornheiser
Don't. I don't like it at all.
Jason La Canfora
After last night. Is TGL gonna make pti?
Tony Kornheiser
What do you mean? Is it gonna make. Oh, no, I don't think so.
Jason La Canfora
There's a hole in one to decide the playoffs.
Tony Kornheiser
Who won?
Jason La Canfora
Tom Kim. Oh, Tom Kim. Holes out. A wedge shot. Tiger's fist pumping. They're all going to the ground. They're so.
Tony Kornheiser
It's Jupiter 1.
Jason La Canfora
Yeah, Jupiter 1.
Tony Kornheiser
I had that. I said for sentimental reasons.
Jason La Canfora
Tiger, Rory in round one of the playoffs.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, I got that right.
Jason La Canfora
The Kelsey effect. Come on.
Tony Kornheiser
So I hope that. I hope we do that. You should.
Jason Locke
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
Was Travis Kelce at that one, too? So the other night, like, I don't know him. I've never met him. Everyone likes his work.
Jason La Canfora
Jason. Jason traveled the entire stadium. I now know this because we took, you know, we got to see some of those rooms. He was everywhere.
Tony Kornheiser
Which Kelsey am I talking.
Jason La Canfora
You're thinking you're going to go into a story about Travis?
Tony Kornheiser
No. Is Travis the one who's marrying?
Jason La Canfora
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
No, no, the brother.
Jason La Canfora
Oh, Jason.
Michael
Jason.
Tony Kornheiser
Everybody likes him.
Michael
Everybody likes his funny ads.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, well, I don't know about the ads, but on tv, they like his work. The other night he was at TGL and he was chugging beers and. And mixed drinks with people in the audience. And that was a segment, and it seemed. Yeah, it seemed me relatable. He seemed like, you know, he seemed like sort of the best of the common man, A variety host, even though
Michael
he's big, a calmer, more fun version of Gronkowski, maybe more stable.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, different. Completely different than Gronkowski.
Jason Locke
Okay.
Tony Kornheiser
Gronkowski. You look at Gronkowski and you sort of think he knows. He's acting like he's being very deliberate.
Michael
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
There is a natural quality to Kelsey.
Jason La Canfora
Yes.
Tony Kornheiser
Maybe he's acting, but much of it's through his eyes.
Jason La Canfora
Much of it is through the eyes. He just feels like he's connecting with you.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. You know, so.
Jason La Canfora
Yeah, it's like he was touring the commissary yesterday and picking up a chicken wing.
Jason Locke
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
So. So Tiger's team made the playoffs. Yeah, they were the underdogs.
Jason La Canfora
No injuries reported. When Tiger was getting, you know, Tom Kim.
Tony Kornheiser
Tom Kim is fabulous because he's so excitable. He's the best guy on this show.
Jason La Canfora
It is exactly what TGL needed. And clearly the last two weeks, they've given this league the full court press.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, yes.
Jason La Canfora
To see if they could get a little bit of a bump. And I imagine after last night, they got the bu. Now the question is, did it really go in the hole? The hole in one.
Tony Kornheiser
What do you mean did it?
Jason La Canfora
I'm just saying you hit it past the hole. It slowly. I mean, we all know space jam. It slowly rolls back. Didn't really go in the hole.
Tony Kornheiser
Oh, oh. So this was not on the green area. No, this was hitting.
Jason La Canfora
It was a full wedge shot on a part.
Michael
You know, so you think maybe somebody just say it.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason La Canfora
Last hole, Hammer Thrones.
Tony Kornheiser
Good idea.
Jason La Canfora
Great idea.
Tony Kornheiser
Look, if they fixed it good.
Jason La Canfora
No, they didn't fix it, but I don't know.
Tony Kornheiser
I believe. I believe the lottery was fixed for Dallas last year with Cooper Flagg. I believe the lottery was fixed with Patrick Ewing. I believe the lottery was fixed with LeBron James. I do.
Michael
What was the rumor about Pat Ewing?
Tony Kornheiser
Cold. It was cold.
Jason Locke
Dry.
Tony Kornheiser
Ice cold. Yeah, the envelope was cold. They knew to pick it. All right, we'll get out of here. Jason Locke. And for when we return, I'm Tony Kornheiser.

You're listening to the Tony Kornheiser Show. This is a band called Crown of Smoke. This is a song called Head Dragger. What more do you need if they if you're writing a song called Head Dragger, like this is not, you know, not folk rock. It's not folk rock. It's not Head Dragger. This comes from our friend George Mellet who writes following Brett Whisk on Sage. Advised to space out my music submissions, I'm back with two more tracks from my brother's band, Crown of Smoke. Since their last appearance on the show, these hard rocking, decidedly non teenage musicians have been booked like they're the Eagles of the Mid Atlantic. Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania. They're basically running a tour at this point. Podcast clearly has superpowers. I've always been known as George Wright's as in our hometown as Phil's brother, you know. But now he's not. Now he wasn't George anyway. He was then because of tv, he was George. And now he's Phil's brother again.
Michael
He's going back to it.
Tony Kornheiser
So that's good. That's good.
Pat 40
Very good.
Tony Kornheiser
Again, called Head Dragger plays in our friend Jason Lock and Fora and we're going to talk about the combine. I mean, I think we probably have to start with Kyler Murray and The fact that the brand new coach who was Matt Lafleur's brother, has informed the world and Mr. Murray that his services are no longer required in Arizona. This is a guy who won a Heisman. He was the number one overall pick, if I'm not mistaken. And his first three years at Arizona, even though burdened by the terrible karma of Cliff Kingsbury, who cannot win any games in the second half of seasons, like he starts 5 and 1 and then in finishes 5 and 8. But Kyler Murray, I said yesterday on the PTI show, like, I thought he was Lamar Jackson west of the Mississippi. I thought he was really good. What happened?
Jason Locke
Yeah, I mean, I think it's a confluence of events. Arizona, I mean, I don't know, remind me of the success they've had at the quarterback position. You know, historically, organizationally, institutionally, I, I can't, I struggle to find it.
Tony Kornheiser
Kurt Warner for a couple of years. Kurt Warner, couple years.
Jason Locke
But even then, that's after somebody, somebody else made Kurt Warner, you know what I mean? And they got him at the end.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Jason Locke
And the real, the real great, truly Bidwell esque thing about that is part of the reason he was ready to move on the way he was and get out of there is because they ran such a third rate, cheap operation, charging guys for Gatorades when they wanted to come in at six o' clock in the morning and have early practices and not wanting to pay to, you know, stock the cafeteria. If Kurt Warner wanted to really change their franchise and have guys in the building before they had to be and all that stuff, trust me, they sucked some of the life out of that situation. They probably could have got another year, at least one more of competitive football out of Kurt Warner, one of the greatest playoff quarterbacks of all time. But no, that fell into their lap and they couldn't even maximize that. So that's a part of the equation for sure. You know, I think the Kingsbury part of it was problematic. I think Tyler had a lot of growing up to do and I don't think they had the right band of adults around him to show him enough tough love and sort of show him the way. I think there are certainly questions to ask about Kyler himself and just how much of vocation is this for him and how much of a job is it for him? And we're going to find out because he's going to get paid way more money by Arizona not to play for them this year than he's going to get paid by wherever he lands. And I'D throw a dart at the New York Football jets, which, if that's the case again, Godspeed. Yeah, because you're going here, you know, you're going out of one barn door and into another. Like, what do they, what do they know about developing anything? But that's, that's where he is. Minnesota, I think, would be the best spot for him, and maybe that's where he, he lands. But I think there's definitely questions to be asked about what you're getting in Kyler Murray. And, you know, back when we still had a Washington Post sports session, RIP And I was still writing at the NFL for them, you know, back in November, I was hearing, like, loudly that this wasn't a medical thing so much. What percent it was a medical thing in that let's keep him on ice. Let's, let's not owe him any more future money on injury guarantees. Jacoby Brissette's our better quarterback right now. And no matter who the next coach of the Arizona Cardinals was going to be, LaFleur or if they got, you know, Davis Webb or Steelhouse or whatever, Kyler Murray was going to be gone. And now Kyler Murray's basically gone.
Tony Kornheiser
Could you see Tua and Kyler Murray changing spots?
Jason Locke
Sure.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Locke
Yeah. I mean, yes. Yeah, I, I could. I, I, if I'm Leflore, I really don't know, but I've talked to a lot of people about this for a long time because these, this, again, this is not a new development. You know, like, I think that people are more intrigued by Tyler. They see more upside, significant upside in Tyler than to a. Because Kyler does, he's willing to push the ball downfield. Tyler, does he activate his legs as much as he probably should? You could make the case in recent years, not especially in the second half of seasons, where maybe because he's a smaller guy, he runs out of gas, I don't know. But I think Tyler offers you a much richer sort of template to explore than Tua does at this stage. And that's not even really, I mean, part of that, I guess, is factoring into concussions, but two is not doing much for you outside the pocket. Tua is not wanting to push the ball down the field at all. It's coming out in, you know, two seconds. It's, it's, it's not going that far downfield. And then we're, you know, we're running the line and we're doing it all over again. And you add the concussions, you know,
Tony Kornheiser
factor on top of that it's understandable.
Jason Locke
I'm not sure too is a starting quarterback. Like I think Tyler, you know, especially if he goes to like the jets or something like that, you know, Kyler is going to get a crack at it. I'm not sure that that too is.
Tony Kornheiser
What was the biggest news out of the combine? Was it this or was it something else?
Jason Locke
No, I mean, look, I, I don't think anything that happened with guys lifting weights and who's going to run and who's not going to run and who's going to throw and who'. Throwing. I just think that that's as Poppycock.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah, that's a show.
Jason Locke
Honestly, the biggest takeaway for me from the combine is more teams are just wholeheartedly staying away. More teams are just sending low level scouts to do the interviews and their football people are staying in their building and they're getting, you know, they can watch everything and everything's fed to them from the numbers, you know, the analytics. The analytics come straight to their, you know, that comes straight to their computer systems and they can talk to the agents over zoom. They don't, they don't need to be at st. Elmo's at 3 o' clock in the morning. So I think the combine as we know it is becoming more and more antiquated. I mean, even the Senior Bowl, I have had so many people, agents and teams just saying, man, the senior bowling, what it used to be like, we don't know that we need to send as many contingents there as we did in the past. I think people are learning to work a little smarter, a little more efficiently. And in a sport where, you know, it's a race to who can get in the building first and who can leave the building last in season when you are out of season, and especially times like this when players aren't in your building yet, you know, let's. Do we need to take a week out of our lives? You know what I mean, to go eight days to bring, you know, 80 people, personnel and all that stuff to Indianapolis.
Tony Kornheiser
Well, I think it's a way.
Jason Locke
I mean it's not, it's not 1978 anymore.
Pat 40
Like, why are we doing this?
Jason Locke
Why are we doing this?
Tony Kornheiser
They're doing it to keep football in the news. They're doing it to have a presence in every single month of the year. That's. It's a show, it's a television show. That's why they're doing it. The one thing I was curious about, and I saw Dan Orlovsky on ESPN say this about a week ago that he had looked and it's him. You know, it's not. He's not presenting information from a battery of people. He said I had looked at tapes of Mendoza. I don't see that much and I wonder if you'd heard anything like that. Is there any jeopardy to him being the overall one?
Jason Locke
There's not jeopardy because supply, demand, the usual economics and the fact that a third of this league needs a quarterback and the Raiders perpetually need a quarterback and Tom Brady I think likes the cut of his jib. So no, I don't think he's going to be dealt like I don't think that pick's going to be dealt. The Raiders are going to take him. Now is he truly a 1 1? I know. Is he a better football prospect and take position out but you can even lead position in because a lot of the guys who are superior to him do affect the quarterback in a massive way which. So that's a premium position. I'm not trying to sell you on, you know, you know an inside linebacker who just gets everybody aligned and doesn't. Doesn't make plays behind the line of scrimmage. No, there's. He's not the best football prospect in this draft and it's probably not particularly close. And I'd also posit when it's all said and done, the distance between him and the second quarterback and that second quarterback might be a kid from North Dakota State, Colton, who nobody's ever heard of before. And it's not the kid from Alabama, I can tell you that Simpson. But like the gap might not be as extreme as people are going to tell you but this court, this draft is so bereft of top end quarterbacks and the free agent class when we're sitting here talking about a failed column Murray and a failed to a tongue of a low and you know, so there's just not much out there. So because of all those market circumstances he will be the first overall pick and people will understand why he's the first overall pick. But is, is, is he a can't miss generational quarterback? Like is he even. What evaluators thought of a Trevor Lawrence in this, you know, same spot, whatever. How many years ago that was? Five or six.
Tony Kornheiser
Five or six.
Jason Locke
No, he's not.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay.
Jason Locke
He's not.
Tony Kornheiser
Did any. Any franchise tags or the sort of lack of franchise tags surprise you?
Jason Locke
No lack of franchise tags. Not at all. We thought it would just honestly be Pitts and Pickens.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Jason Locke
Wrote about this my Buddies in London. Sportsboom. Sportsboom us. You check me out there? Of course, I've got an item this morning. Of course the one that is, has people shaking their heads a little bit is Breece Hall. Yeah, the jets tore it down to the studs. They couldn't get what they wanted for this running back, which, which who's been available in trade. People been talking about Breece hall and trade, you know, for over a calendar year. They couldn't get what they wanted for him. Which kind of told you where the league was on him yet. They want to secure his rights at over $14 million for one year and give him a whole lot of negotiating leverage between now and July 15th to do a multi year deal. Because if you're the jets and you think you're rebuilding again and he's 25 and you want to pay him 14 for one, then you probably want to pay him 50 something for three, don't you? Like so. But then it's also back to sort of why. And by the time you come around on the other side of it and he's 27 or 28 and he already, you know, has injuries, deep injury history. Like does that, does that really make sense? And if you wanted to be strategic, you'd put the transition tag on him. No one's going to sign an offer sheet. You're not going to get two first round picks for him with a non exclusive tender. You could save yourself three and a half million dollars, sign them to a transition tag, have more leverage with them, you know. But just who is it, you know what I mean? Who was the one team you're giving Aaron Rodgers a big boy contract with the rest of the league is like he's a backup now, you know, he's certainly a low level starter. He's not, he's not a franchise savior. It's the Jets. I mean they fired the whole coaching staff and kept Aaron Glenn. Like what? Like why? Like Frank Reich will be coaching the New York jets by, I don't know, Halloween bucket.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, one more. The Bears center. This destroyed Wilbondalman retiring at 27.
Jason Locke
Yeah, you know, this isn't quite, I think the, the bolt of lightning it would have been, you know, five, six, seven, eight years ago. We've seen, you know, Luke Keakley and other guys leave sort of at the heights of their prowess. You know, it's Andrew Locke, right?
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, yes.
Jason Locke
You know, so this is the, you know, we're in a different world now and these, these guys have avenues available to them. And information available to them year after year year about their their medicals and and what have you and other inherent risks and yeah, I mean look the this is not a very good free agent class by any stretch of the imagination and there's not a lot of guys who I think are going to make good teams great or certainly put great teams over the top.
Pat 40
But if you want a center.
Tony Kornheiser
Tyler Linderbaum, Baltimore Ravens yeah, I was at that. I was surprised.
Jason Locke
He does it for you.
Tony Kornheiser
Talk.
Jason Locke

Once again, this is Crown of Smoke. This is a song called Sight. Yeah. This is not a folk music band. This is just not. This is not Peter, Paul and Mary. No, not having that. This is. You call yourself Crown of Smoke. You're not fooling anybody. You have guitars like this.
Jason La Canfora
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
You're not fooling anybody.
Pat 40
It's quite good.
Michael
George Mallet's brother, right?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Pat 40
Yeah, quite good.
Tony Kornheiser
Michael, if. If independent bands like Crown of Smoke want to get their music played on this high quality podcast, how do they go about it?
Jason La Canfora
Send us your music by emailing it to jingles@tonyquanizershow.com and with that extra hour that's coming your way, go check out johnnyo.com Tkilisten and check out their new spring offerings.
Tony Kornheiser
I hate the extra hour.
Jason Locke
This early.
Tony Kornheiser
I hate it. All right, it plays in Pat 40. This segment with Pat 40 is brought to you by FanDuel. Make every moment more. And I want to talk about the upcoming tournament, but before I do that, the Olympics. You went to the Olympics? You've been to a lot of Olympics in general. Did you rate it in the good or in the disappointing?
Pat 40
Oh, in the good. I thought it was really good. You know, a lot of great stories, compelling dramas, surprises, disappointments, great scene, great host country, spectacular venues. It was good. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever been to, but it was. It was really good.
Tony Kornheiser
The hockey was a delight to view on television. It really was. The hockey was great because, you know, the right two teams were in the final. So it was really nice.
Pat 40
The hockey was incredible. It was. Yeah. It was the clash everybody was hoping to see.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Pat 40
You know, it's like when you get the two heavyweights that make the final Four championship game and then, you know, the drama and the tension in the building and then, you know, the emotion afterwards with Johnny Goudreau's jersey and the family. It was good stuff.
Tony Kornheiser
I assume they're still curling. I assume if we went back, they'd
Pat 40
still be curling until further notice. Tony, they're curling forever. Nobody has left the curling venue.
Tony Kornheiser
Unbelievable.
Pat 40
Play so many matches. It's incredible.
Tony Kornheiser
Every single day. There's no other sport. Every single day. Curling was on every day. Wow.
Pat 40
Yeah, it's kind of like cagey strategy on behalf of the sport, I guess, that, like, you have to watch it if you're going to watch the Olympics. And so then all of a sudden everybody's like, yeah, I like curling. Yeah, because you always see it. It's Like a soap opera. General Hospital. It's on every day.
Tony Kornheiser
That's amazing. All right, let me move to the United States of America and to college basketball. And let me start with the kid at usc. What was that? What is the backstory on that?
Pat 40
Well, Chad Baker Mazara has a lot of backstory. I mean, this is a guy who has been a handful for his entire seven year career.
Tony Kornheiser
He's like 26.
Pat 40
Yeah, he's 26 years old. He's attended four Division 1 colleges, plus a juco. Auburn was the only place that could handle him for two years. Bruce Pearl put up with a lot. He did not make it through the full year at usc, obviously. You know, there was some belief. He got. He got hurt in that last game against Nebraska. Left the bench, came back, sat on the baseline in the seat there. Some people have told me that other USC fans, players have sat there before this year. So I don't know. But he was really not a participant in the huddles or anything else thereafter. And, you know, Chad Baker Mazzara is who he is in his college career. Seems to be over. You never really know these days.
Tony Kornheiser
No, he'll apply for a waiver and he'll get, you know, he'll play at least 30. All right. The other thing that stands out, Tommy Lloyd, the coach at Arizona, goes on the microphone and says, I can't believe people are saying that we're soft. You know, we're a West coast school and we're soft. Who, who, who has seen them? Who would say that? They don't take any threes. They pound it. That's big boy basketball. What is he talking about?
Pat 40
Yeah, I have no idea. I don't know. Because, yeah, they, you know, he's built on the Gonzaga model where he was an assistant coach to mark few forever, which is like giant people out there, Right?
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Pat 40
Big teams that throw it inside a lot.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Pat 40
And so that's, you know, I've never seen that as a criticism of this Arizona team, but it's that time of year, coaches are all irritable. You know, you get to this point and everybody's cranky. They just like, just get us to some tournament basketball, please. And thankfully we're there.
Tony Kornheiser
That's fine. I mean, I just thought, like, who is this guy? You know? And I know he's had great success there, but not in the tournament. Not in the tournament, Right.
Jason Locke
Correct.
Pat 40
He has not been past the sweet 16. Right. He's got a major element there that he still has to prove. He has not really broken through to the level where people are going to now say, okay, you're one of the best in the country.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. So I'm not a big fan anyway. All right, your top four right now. Your top four seats right now.
Pat 40
Top four in order right now, Michigan one. Barely overdue. Really? Yeah, it's close. I mean, look, if you ask me, tomorrow, it might be different. Florida 3, Arizona 4.
Tony Kornheiser
Arizona has beaten Florida. Arizona beat Florida head to head.
Pat 40
They did, long time ago. Florida's different team now.
Tony Kornheiser
That's what I said about Notre Dame football. And Wilburn yelled at me. He said, well, Miami beat him head to head. And I said, it was in August. And Wilburn yelled at me, well, you know, the.
Pat 40
There's certainly more chances for do overs in basketball than there is in football. It's, you know, like, look, Duke again, though, you watch him on Monday night. So my evolution was this, Tony. Friday night I watched Michigan win at Illinois. Destroy them.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, they did. They did. Yes.
Pat 40
Then I watched Duke at noon against Virginia. Like, maybe that's the best team.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Pat 40
Then I watch Arizona in the afternoons, like, maybe it's Arizona. Then at night I watch Florida's like, oh, it's definitely Florida. And then I watched Duke again Monday. I was like, that's probably Duke. So, I mean, I've been all over the board, but here's what I love. We've got those four teams, plus UConn.
Tony Kornheiser
Yes.
Pat 40
You've got every one of the major conferences represented. You've got every region of the United States represented. And you can have this debate and this argument. There's five teams that look like they've separated and who knows, you know, we're going to throw them all into a hat and pull out some seeds and let them go at it in a couple of weeks. And I think it's fantastic.
Tony Kornheiser
What is your experience tell you, aren't most of the seedings done already? And even if these five top teams lose in their conference tournaments, won't it have little to no effect on the seedings?
Pat 40
I think so. I think at the top end, the seatings probably are pretty close to done now.
Tony Kornheiser
I mean, the only question is, is it UConnor? Is it Florida? Right. That's the only question.
Pat 40
I would think so. You know, unless. Unless, you know, if Arizona loses early, maybe It's. Maybe it's UConn and Florida and Arizona gets bumped to a two, but probably not. You know, we're probably done. We are probably at the top end. You know, the question then. Yes. Who's the one and who's the two between the last number one and UConn as the first number two and who those. One of those, you know, would have to play them eventually in a regional final, theoretically. So, you know, for now, I think the committee's got other issues. One issue they don't have, by the way, Miami of Ohio.
Tony Kornheiser
I wanted to ask you about that. They have to go in, don't they? They have to.
Pat 40
30 and oh, I was just looking this up before we got on the phone here. There's never been a team since they expanded the bracket to 64 in 1985 with two or fewer losses and 30 wins that hasn't gotten in. So they're. They're in. The worst they can be is 30 and two right now. All right, 30 and oh, right. They got one regular season game left. If they lose that and then they lose in the first round of the Mac 30 and 2, they're getting in or else there's something really rotten going on. So I think, sorry, Bruce Pearl, you can keep ripping them all you want. They're getting in.
Tony Kornheiser
I would, I would throw back at you just for the sake of argument. The fact that their strength of schedule is 321 out of 365. Their non conference strength of schedule is 360 out of 365. We like to call Binghamton area because we haven't done very well this year at all. But that's what I would throw back at you. But I believe, as you believe that they need to get in. Even if they get beat in the first round by 50. They need to get in.
Pat 40
They do. Or else what are we doing as a sport? You're basically telling everyone outside the power conferences there's nothing you can do to make the tournament at large. Literally nothing. Because 30 and oh isn't going to be good enough. Or 30 and one. Come on. I mean, like we have. We would have completely invalidated the regular season for 270 teams out there.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. This is not football. It's not football where there's a limited field. There are 37 at large bids here. Miami of Ohio should be able to get one of the 37. Lenardi told me the other day that he thought they'd be in an 89 game. That, that they would.
Pat 40
That could be.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah.
Pat 40
You know, again, I was. I've been looking for precedent of this and like, do you Remember George Washington 20 years ago? They're really good team. They ended up 26 and 1 and then they lost in Their conference tournament game and they were an 8 or a 9, I can't remember. I think maybe a 9. They got in at 26 and 2. So I think they're not only in, but they're in with room to spare now that they won last night, although it was another heart attack game. I was there.
Jason Locke
And
Pat 40
they like the close ones.
Tony Kornheiser
Who did they play last night?
Pat 40
Toledo, who's pretty good and won four straight championships in the Mac regular season. Yeah. You know, I mean, their margin for error is not big. Miami, but they don't care. They find ways to win. It's remarkable.
Tony Kornheiser
I would, I would bet you that a lot of college coaches in those kinds of conferences would say whoever wins the regular season should get the bid, not the conference tournament in a one bid.
Pat 40
Oh, yeah, you know, yeah, they. Yeah, they respect the regular season champion for sure. And who is, who is the Toledo coach last night? Went to bat for Miami big time. Said they need to be in.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay, let me ask you this. And this is because I watch these games on tv. I watch Duke, Syracuse. I watch Duke, Notre Dame. The guy at Syracuse is failing. The guy at Notre Dame is failing. Juwan Howard failed at Michigan. The guy at Louisville failed. Closer to, you know, where you live, how about Mark Pope at Kentucky? Is he failing?
Pat 40
He is not failing yet, but he's also not thriving. He's not. It's not good, but it's not. We're going to fire Mark Pope. Not after two years. They did make the tournament last year. They made the sweet 16. They've had injuries both years, multiple, you know, season ending injuries. There's still no excuse for them to be this bad and to get housed by Texas A and M last night or whoever the heck they played. And they lose too many bad games. And they spent a fortune on this roster. I think it's probably the most expensive roster in college basketball. And so they're just getting nothing out of it. So Kentucky's athletic director since 2002 just announced yesterday he's retiring. So it's like, I'm not fired. Mark Pope.
Tony Kornheiser
Right.
Pat 40
Let the next guy decide this. There will be pressure on him next year for sure. But for now he's. He's okay. He will coach again at Kentucky in 20, 26, 27.
Tony Kornheiser
Because all those people I listed, they look like they're done. They look like. And some of them have been done. Two of them have been done.
Pat 40
Yeah.
Tony Kornheiser
And Michigan and Louisville got much better when they made changes, right? They got much better.
Pat 40
They did. They did. Absolutely. And you know, I'm not saying Pope is going to turn it around, but I don't think he will be two years and out.
Tony Kornheiser
Okay. All right. Want to plug your podcast?
Jason Locke
Sure.

Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. We don't do that. We don't. It's. We don't do that. I don't want to do that.
Pat 40
You know what? You also actually just have a quality show. You're not trying to gin things up. So anyway. But yes, we have a YouTube component. Please watch.

Remember, you can listen to us on Apple Podcasts Spotify and Odyssey. Get show through Apple Podcasts Please leave us a review from Scott Gurney in East Selkirk in Manitoba, which is in Canada. Yes. Who says he's a size 11 and a half B with hey Mr. Tony, now 46. Now that the cat's out of the bag concerning your new shoe operation, I've just got two words for you. Franchise opportunity T Kicks will make a killing in the Canadian market. Between Dave J in Newfoundland, east coast and me in Manitoba, Canada's Midwest, we've got over half the country covered. All we need is a loyal little in British Columbia for total countrywide domination. Have your people call my people. From Tim Ratigan in LaGrange, Illinois, I am emailing with a concern regarding the price I'm paying for shoes purchased from your company. As you know, I'm a longtime customer. Love the option to lock in a price at the beginning of the shoe season that will carry me throughout the year. In fact, I have taken advantage of this option every year. As I assume you know for some reason I was not notified of the lock in option this year. When I called and spoke to your manager, I was told that since I did not opt for the lock in price, I must now pay the market price for my shoes. I responded by saying that your record should indicate that I chose this option every year and good customer service would be to allow me to lock in now at the current market price for the remainder of the year. The request fell on deaf ears. Have you ever heard of such a. This is brilliant.
Pat 40
Word for word.
Tony Kornheiser
This is everything I've said about Sherman Oil that is completely brilliant. From Michael Baranek, Dr. Kornheiser, with your newfound excitement for the Arnold Classic Arnold in Columbus, Ohio. I'm willing to drive to Columbus and meet you, Michael and Nigel at the Thurman Cafe in the German Village area. They have a burger built for the bodybuilders that flock to Columbus Anne and they call it the Therminator. I've included a picture of this beast with this email. It's gigantic. Absolutely gigantic.
Michael
Yeah, it's huge.
Tony Kornheiser
Start from the bottom bun and go up. Mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle, banana, peppers. 12 ounce burger. 12 ounce burger. Bacon cheddar, a second 12 ounce burger, sauteed onions, mushrooms, ham, mozzarella and American cheeses. And close the list with the top bun. As of 2025, the cost is 27.99 with fries.
Jason La Canfora
Deal.
Tony Kornheiser
If I remember correctly, two times the burger King Whopper meal. This is hands down better than a Whopper. It's gorgeous.
Michael
Yes, it really is.
Tony Kornheiser
It's at least two people. Oh sure, at least two people.
Jason La Canfora
It's a date night.
Tony Kornheiser
Brian. Yes, Brian Sunix, Last week you expressed amazement about the connection between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Columbus, Ohio. It started when Arnold won the 1970 Mr. World competition. An eight foot tall bronze statue commemorating the achievement is now located outside the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Photo attached where the annual Arnold Sports Festival is held. Unfortunately, ice cream meeting is not an event, but there is a Jenny's Ice Cream a two minute walk away. Yeah, there's a big statue of Arnold when he was a bodybuilder and it just says Arnold. It just says Arnold.
Jason La Canfora
Wow.
Tony Kornheiser
And we're getting another. We got lots of these. This is from Ryan Gesser in Atlanta, Georgia and pictures are available with it. Imagine my delight catching up on Wednesday's POD when I heard your new good friend Todd Harris announce that his next assignment is the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio during the first weekend of March. I said aloud, I know that festival because I'm a two time weightlifting medalist earning silver medals in 2020 and gold medals in 2023, parenthetically within my weight class and squarely middle aged masters division. So let's not get too excited. The Arnold Sports Festival is a bucket list item for competitors, spectators and fitness enthusiasts alike that features a massive fitness and wellness exhibition and national level competitions for professionals and amateurs in bodybuilding, weightlifting, powerlifting, strongman and strong woman, arm wrestling, boxing, multiple martial arts disciplines, cheerleading, dance and even pickleball and foosball. I probably failed to mention a few given that I witnessed medieval jousting during my last visit within weightlifting alone. This year's competition will feature a mechanical. American. Olympic medalists from the 2024 Summer Games were likely to repeat in LA in 2028. And yes, Arnold is in the building as evidenced by photographic documentation. I offer my attachment to you and your viewers on News Channel 8. He roams the training hall where I happen to bump into him, hosts final sessions in the elite bodybuilding competition and is likely to show up in the front row of just about any amateur professional contest. Sadly, I won't be attending this year after spending the last year rehabbing injuries while getting deeper into middle age, and I haven't reattained the qualifying standards in competition. But my coach, and he's in the pictures, will himself be lifting in a Sunday afternoon session. Hopefully next year. I'll be back. Check out Todd's coverage. You won't be disappointed. Isn't that great?
Michael
That's this weekend?
Tony Kornheiser
Yes, that's this weekend from Paulie Coconuts in Winchester, Virginia. Let me help you with this chili thing. Best chili in the D.C. area. Hard times Cafe. That's the list. Honorable mention to the Vienna Inn, but only when served on their world famous chili dogs with a cold draft beer. Shout out to Oakton's own guitar hero extraordinaire, Punky Meadows, who when he goes to Vienna Inn can eat it. David Reedman. Aloha, Mr. Tony. In the 50th state, chili is always served with two scoops of white sushi rice. Ultra short grain rice. That's good. That's what I would like. I like it over rice. From Carrie in Bangor, Maine. I was heading up to the lake this weekend. Ice fishing on the agenda, Turkey chili on the menu. It's about a half hour from my house, not too far from the University of Main Campus. As is tradition for any stretch of highway longer than 12 minutes, I queued up the latest episode of the TK Show. The topic chilly, already feeling seen. But then in a moment that can only be described as radio fade, I pull into a gas station and what rolls in beside me? A full size bus from Binghamton University. The Bearcats themselves. Boom. I'm not saying the universe revolves around the TK show, but evidence is mounting. And then he shows a big picture of beautiful bus.
Michael
That is nice.
Tony Kornheiser
Beautiful Binghamton bus. Show that to Michael. Yeah, we have a. We have a haiku from Shad. A fine line between friendly chili cook offs and free meals for old folks. From Andrew from Innisfil. Just catching up on yesterday's podcast. You seem to be reaching for the name of an Italian restaurant used to frequent. Might it have been Villa Piano's? You know, the spaghetti joint by the airport where you and your pals would go to dance and meet girls, but only once. The house base plan. The house band played that up tempo number. I'll hang up and listen for the rest. Hope that helps. It's funny. Kevin Ripley, as an avid follower of you for many decades and a dedicated listener to the podcast, I was pleasantly surprised when I heard you mention Mangiano's on Monday's episode. I am the head of culinary or culinary for Maggiano's and I can confirm that I believe it was Maggiano's we experienced the Chicken Vesuvio nice that you spoke of as it was a customer favorite on our menu for years. It gives me honor to think of you dining at our Columbia location or any of the others near your several homes and at Elizabeth's Dish Refresh. That Memory. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing. I'll keep looking forward to every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, to hearing you and the boys. Well, we're going to be Monday, Wednesday, Thursday this week. Yes, that's right.
Michael
Tomorrow.
Tony Kornheiser
A little bit early. Yes, but. So it was at Magian.
Michael
But I thought it was the other place, right?
Tony Kornheiser
I think it was. Yes, I think it was. That's a mori. But Maggiano makes it too, so that's good. From David George in Maple Valley, Washington on Monday's show. Your discussion of sourdough bread and the suggestion for your daughter to sell her wonderful loaves had me enthralled. Once Michael mentioned focaccia bread, I knew I had to chime in. You see, my wife and I bake focaccia bread for sale at our local farmers market in Maple Valley, Washington every Saturday during the summer.
Jason La Canfora
What do you mix in?
Tony Kornheiser
We do a ro. Thank you for asking. We do a rosemary, garlic, sea salt and then a seasonal special. We also make chocolate chip and walnut chip. Walnut chocolate chip cookies, both with miso. So I've heard plenty of Littles write in from surrounding areas like Snoqualmie, Snohomish and Seattle. So hopefully, excuse me for coughing, they can add this to their summer to do lists. Anyway, that's my long winded way of saying I couldn't agree more with your suggestion for Liz and her loafs. Hope to hear more conversations of sourdough dolph conditions in the D.C. area and solicitation emails for years to come. Oh, and if it's not too much, could you please tell Amelia George to eat it?
Jason La Canfora
Need to work on my dimpling.
Tony Kornheiser
From David George. I wonder if any relation to Amelia George? Tony, I'm writing again to include the name of my bakery. Peace Loaf. P E A C E. Peaceloaf Bakery. What's a shameless plug without the name? Let it be known that I flushed the mouse. Missing that with my first email. If any of these get read, that's fine. Eric Loop State College, Pennsylvania. Home of old ups.
Jason Locke
Yeah.
Michael
University of Penn State.
Tony Kornheiser
Yeah. Saltines. Hold my beer. Melba toast. Melba toast. Okay.
Michael
It's not Saltines.
Tony Kornheiser
No, Saltines is Matt Quigley in Galloway. Not Galway, New Jersey. Galloway. You know. Right.
Jason Locke
Galloway.
Tony Kornheiser
Dear Grandpa is a South Jersey restaurant consultant of the TK Show. I felt it was my obligation to provide my $0.02 after listening to you and Leonardi talk about bagel shops in the area. Next time you're in Egg harbor, take the short drive over to Northfield and hit up Hot Bagels and more. Without question, the best bagel in the area and the closest thing I've had to a genuine New York City bagel. They also have locations in Somers Point in Margate. Not only are they the undisputed number one overall seat in the South Jersey bagel bracket, but they are John Wooden, UCLA Bruins dynasty of bagel shops having won the Best of the Atlantic City Press award every year. Bagels have been a category. Can't recommend them enough. Next time you're in the area. Also, feel free to share this knowledge with Lenardi. The episode is classic TK Show: warm, irreverent, and quick-witted, mixing nostalgia and complaint (“old man yells at cloud”), with left-field detours and plenty of sarcasm. Banter never gets in the way of genuine sports insight—a hallmark of Tony and his frequent guests.
This episode is representative of the Tony Kornheiser Show’s unique appeal—a place where sports news merges with personal pet peeves, pop culture, and heartfelt listener involvement. Whether it’s complaining about DST, dissecting quarterback drama, or recalling childhood bread heists, Tony and crew keep things sharp, relatable, and funny.
