Hey there, listeners! Get ready for another episode of the Virgin Podcaster! On this month’s episode, we invite lovely ladies Erin and Gabs to talk about this hilariously non-sequitur shoot the shit podcast called Lady to Lady (or Lady on Lady, according to Erin) hosted by three comedians. Hopefully, our interpretation of their podcast is just as hilariously non-sequitur. It’s definitely non-sequitur, anyway… https://minervamag.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/VP-Lady-to-Lady-_mixdown.m4a The post The Virgin Podcaster: Lady to Lady appeared first on Minerva Mag.

Happy Valentine’s Day (month), listeners! I hope everyone is having a happy month so far, shared with lots of good friends, supportive, loving family, and an unrealistic amount of OTPs. In order to celebrate the holiday the podcast way, our lovely editor-in-chief Erin and I dug our ears into Dan Savage’s Savage Lovecast, an advice podcast dedicated to the trials and tribulations of sexual relationships, with all the troubles, rants, inane questions, and blunt advice mixed in. Word of warning: The Savage Lovecast, and this episode, touch on uncomfortable subjects such as profanity, crass language, and some graphic imagery. Happy New Year, listeners! I hope your holiday seasons were festive and happy! The VP is back with all new episodes, and this month we’re kicking off and getting back on track with an episode on “The Black Tapes.” Due to technical difficulties the episode Olivia recorded with Gabs about this podcast was lost to Internet time, but never fear! Olivia’s boyfriend Chris was there to help out. So buckle in for a long-overdue new episode about “The Black Tapes” to start the new year off right. Olivia’s New Year’s resolution? To listen to more podcasts, of course! P.S. Warning for those younger ears; we touch on potentially mature themes just a bit (and a little jokingly). P.P.S. We riffed on The Twilight Zone while making comparisons, so shout out to Allison Rand’s fantastic piece about her favorite Twilight Zone episodes. P.P.P.S. As always, if you’d like to contribute to the conversation, or listen along to next month’s podcast in advance, comment below or tweet at either @MagMinerva or @WoodsWords27. Happy Halloween, listeners! This week on The Virgin Podcaster, Olivia and Gabs look at four (or in Olivia’s case, three) spooky podcasts sure to put you in the Halloween spirit: NoSleep Podcast, Bizarre States, Lore, and Limetown. (Honorable mention includes The Black Tapes, and SCARED). So grab your ghost hunting gear, your books about folklore, and a whole bagful of candy (and by the way, did you dress in costume?!) and prepare for a frightfully good time. Podcaster’s Note: I really wanted to call this episode “Spooky Shit”. The Virgin Podcaster – Spooky Halloween Episode The post The Virgin Podcaster: Halloween Special appeared first on Minerva Mag.

Medicine. Throughout time it has probably hurt (or at least dramatically inconvenienced) as much as it has helped humanity throughout the course of history. And despite our best intentions, sometimes we didn’t always know how to cure a stomach ache or stop motion sickness. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t try! This week on the Virgin Podcaster Olivia and Erin talk “Sawbones,” a podcast all about humanity’s misadventures with medicine, hosted by Dr. Sydnee McElroy and her husband Justin. So don those gloves and scrubs, listeners, because it’s time to try to fix people. P.S. Not only was Olivia a virgin podcast listener for this episode, but it was also her first time serving as virgin podcast editor, (a fact of which she’s very proud). Monsters have always held equal parts fear and fascination from humanity, and stories of ghosts, ghouls, and things that go bump in the night have kept our attention for generations. In this episode Olivia and Gabs delve into Monster Talk, a podcast presented by SKEPTICS magazine that examines stories, tales, and myths surrounding some of the world’s most interesting and popular monsters, combining skepticism, science, and superstition to do it. So grab your garlic, your binoculars, your silver bullets, and your radioactivity scanners, and watch out, because something wicked (and a lot of fun) this way comes. In this episode I take my first crash course in podcast listening, with This American Life (TAL for those in the know) as my subject, which was HUGELY exciting for me, since I’d heard so much about the podcast but had never listened to it. With the help of Gabs and Erin, our indomitable editors-in-chief, we discuss this wonderful podcast, and other tangential subjects. So, the upshot of this episode is this: check out This American Life. It’s an intriguing, thoughtful, and thought-provoking listen, and there’s enough variety that anyone could find an episode that suits their personal tastes. I’d recommend the episodes I listened to, and any others that strike your fancy. And if you hear any episodes you think I should listen to, let me know! Apparently, the podcast—you know, that incredibly versatile medium of conversation/review/interview/etc. that has been sweeping the Internet and consuming our headphones for the past ten-ish years—is as popular as ever. More are created every day, and the audience just keeps on growing. For someone like me, who wants to dive in and join the party but knows little to nothing about podcasts, let alone what to listen to, they’re more intimidating than enjoyable. What’s a virgin podcaster to do? Thankfully, I’m not alone. My incredibly knowledgeable and podcast-savvy friends have agreed to help me navigate my way through the fun, informative, and wacky world of podcasts. Join me, Olivia, on my listening quest as I learn what’s good, what’s bad, and what I need to know to become a true podcaster. Episode 1: “The Podcast Podcast” As part of the inaugural episode of The Virgin Podcaster, I do some digging and report an abridged (very abridged) version of the history of the podcast. Then, with the help of my first guest and friend, Gabs Roman, I learn some basics about the podcast world, and get a crash course in what kinds of podcasts are out there and why people bother to listen to them in the first place.
