Welcome to the who, what where? Podcast, your direct line to the designers, stylists, beauty experts, editors and tastemakers who are shaping the ever evolving world of fashion. I'm who what Wears? Editorial director Lauren Eggertson. And today we've got a hot off the presses New York Fashion Week episode. Our associate director of special projects, Kristen Nichols, just wrapped up a week's worth of shows. Like, actually, she just left her last show a couple of hours before we recorded this. So of course I had to grab her to get her takes on her standout moments, favorite shows, and the emerging trends she's noticing. Plus, we'll hear from some of our other editors who were kind enough to send us voice notes throughout the busy week. It's all coming up on who, what where. Hi Kristin, thanks for joining me on the pod. I'm so excited to start hearing about your week. And you just had your last show of the week, right?
Kristen Nichols
Yes. Hi Lauren. So excited to chat with you about Fashion Week. Today is the last day of shows and I just got back from Kalmier, which is one of my favorite New York brands. They showed their collection at a beautiful gallery space downtown. As you walked in, there were trays with coffees on them, and as you left, they had silver trays where everyone got to take home a few cookies for the road. So it felt like such a fun, relaxed environment and it really was this very intimate show in a salon esque environment where you could almost touch the clothes. You were that close to them and was perhaps her most elegant collection yet. It was really Beautiful.
Lauren Eggertson
For those listening who aren't familiar with the brand, how would you describe the overall aesthetic and if there was any, like, newness today that really impressed you?
Kristen Nichols
Yeah. You know, I always think of Daniela Kalmier and her designs in terms of, like, really strong tailoring, like a modern take on New York dressing. Kind of like the coolest person, you know who lives in New York is wearing her clothes. But today, it was, as I mentioned, a little more elegant. There were, like, really beautiful satins and a line silhouettes, really interesting styling moments. There were a lot of tassels. Even, like, the hair was pulled back into low ponytails. And there was just so much to take in. So it felt like a really fun show to end on the last day of Fashion Week.
Lauren Eggertson
Wow. Sounds so gorgeous. When I think about chic people in New York, I think about you, so it makes sense that it's one of your favorite brands. As you know, I sadly couldn't come and attend New York Fashion Week with you guys this season, but I'm excited to learn about all of the highlights from you. So to kick things off, I know you're still digesting and processing. It's so much to see so many shows and go to so many presentations, and there's so much discourse around all of the newness. But what were you most excited about and did any of the shows that you were looking forward to meet your expectations or surpass them? I'd love to just know, like, Kristin's highlights.
Kristen Nichols
Yes. You were very missed at Fashion Week, so I'm glad we have a chance to chat about it now, since I always look forward to hearing your opinion in person. But, yeah, this season, there were so many fun shows. It was actually my first time attending a Kate show in person. I've always loved Kate, and to just see the collection in person was really magical. It was at the Park Avenue Armory, and you stepped into, like, a very dark room, and there was this circular Runway and just a set of lights above. It was a very simple set, but very impactful. The collection was really just this blend of downtown cool and then uptown polish. Some of the standout looks for me were the leopard looks. There were probably, like, five in a row. One was a really beautiful skirt stand that there were newsboy caps, which I don't know. Yeah, I don't know if I'll be partaking. I don't know that I can pull off hats myself, really. But it's kind of a continuation of the pillbox cap trend that we've been seeing a Lot of. So it'll be interesting to see if those take hold. And on the other side of it, there were some really elegant looks. Draped dresses with leather gloves. And one of my favorite debuts in the collection was actually a new bag. I believe it's called the Kate bag. And it was just this glossy faux crocodile bag that I know will be on my shopping list once it drops.
Lauren Eggertson
Yes. Kate bags and shoes and outerwear, I feel like, are always such standouts. And those leopard looks, it was, like, a very interesting leopard. It was so bold. Where oftentimes I know we talk about leopard being a neutral and that you can mix and match it with other prints in a variety of colors. And it's. It's kind of like a wardrobe staple. And I think this print, just like the style of the print, it still can be a neutral, but it was so much punchier than I have seen in a long time.
Kristen Nichols
It's hard to tell from sitting in the audience, so I'll have to investigate once I go to the re see at some point. But it almost looked like it was like, a pony hair or something. So I wonder if that's part of what made it so impactful. But I agree.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah, it had, like, a really cool texture. Okay. We loved Kate. Any other standouts? I know you have so many favorite New York brands.
Kristen Nichols
So many favorites. Altazar is another personal favorite, and I think it's just a brand that in the last few seasons has kind of made a turning point towards this very salon style, intimate show, very elegant, and I just love seeing the world that he's building out. So that was a highlight. Tory Burch, of course, is always a personal favorite. I went to the show last night, which was incredible. It was at the MoMA in Midtown, and it was always one of just, like, the most fun shows to walk into because there's so many celebrities and just really cool talent. They do such a great job at who they're inviting to their shows. People that all represent the brand in so many different ways, whether it's Martha Stewart who is there, who was incredible to see. I just watched her documentary, so it was fun to see her after having watched that. And then different TikTok stars. And then the collection was just incredible. Then I also loved Brandon Maxwell. It was a real mix of great coats and really easy to wear, like, denim looks that somehow made me inspired to wear my jeans in different ways. So those were some highlights for me.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah, Tori was amazing, as always. I feel like we can't even say it's a resurgence anymore because she's been just killing it for so long. What were some of the big standout moments or shows from this week that everyone you feel like was really talking about that were really buzzy? Just, like, objectively across our industry, one.
Kristen Nichols
Of the most anticipated shows that everyone was talking about was Calvin Klein. It was a return to the calendar after many years of not showing. And it's actually the brand's first female creative director, Veronica Leone, who is now at the helm at Calvin Klein. It was a real return to kind of more minimal suiting. Kendall Jenner walked the show, which she usually doesn't walk very often at New York Fashion Week anymore. So that was interesting. And then there was also a buzzy front row, kind of iconic Calvin Klein veterans. Kate Moss, Christy Turlington. Calvin Klein himself was in attendance. So that was a really buzzy moment. And then another return to the calendar was Christopher John Rogers, who hasn't shown in quite some time. So there was a lot of buzz about that. He showed in Brooklyn and had a very colorful, fun collection. And then actually away from New York Fashion Week, that's still somewhat fashion related. At the Super Bowl, Kendrick Lamar wore bootcut jeans or flare jeans, I don't know what we want to call them. But the next day, there were a lot of opinions, either people loving them or not loving them. And it was a very divisive conversation at some of the shows the next morning.
Lauren Eggertson
Oh, my gosh.
Kristen Nichols
I love that.
Lauren Eggertson
I know. All of my algorithms were obsessed with the jeans. It was the funniest assortment of memes and videos of people wanting to instantly add them to their cart. And it was just so funny. It's like there were so many buzzy moments from the whole performance. But I love that the jeans really took a trophy home for sure. Okay, so if you had to pick one show that you will look back on this season, at least in New York. Cause I know you're going to London, too, so you have a lot more to see. What would you say is, like, your standout? And why was there, like, a lot of different items at this one show that you really can predict kind of blowing up, or it just had, like, a personal tug at your heartstrings moment for you?
Kristen Nichols
Yeah. So Tory Burch, as I already mentioned, was definitely one of my favorite shows. It was really just like this tweaked take on classic American sportswear, which she does and is somehow able to reinvent each season. And there were some pieces that our editors that were at the show were already talking about wanting in their closets, whether it was the animal print outerwear or there were these really beautiful strappy heels that were paired with colored tights in shades of beige, chocolate brown, and burgundy, and was just such a nice styling element. And then she also had a take on the Dior new look skirt sleep suit silhouette, which was interesting, and I feel, like, somewhat different for her.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah, amazing. I know one of our other editors, Tara Gonzalez, who is actually a newer addition to our team this year. She was also at the Tori show with you and sent in some of her thoughts about some standout items from the Tori show. So let's take a listen.
Tara Gonzalez
The Tory Burch show at moma was amazing, but something that I immediately saw saw on the Runway, and I said, I need that. And then everybody that I was sitting with had the same exact thought. So I think we will be seeing a lot of it in the fall and winter is the tracksuit pant, which I can't even tell what the fabric is. It was soft. Like, it was not typical track pant material. It felt luxe, and it had this, like, really wide stripe on the side. But I think that her making it in not a vinyl in a different kind of fabrication makes it feel more elevated. And I just think that we're going to see a lot of people gravitating towards them soon. I also really will need a pair or three.
Lauren Eggertson
Okay, well, thank you, Tara. There's lots to love at Tori, clearly. But, Kristin, I'm curious, too, if there were any shows that you really felt had compelling storytelling and if there were any designers that seemed particularly inspired this season.
Kristen Nichols
So, interestingly, from a storytelling point of view, Joseph Altazara mentioned in his show notes that he was stepping away from any thematic collections in favor of really developing pieces that he's interested in creating. And so even though the show wasn't actually framed around a concrete theme like he's done in the past, like a Hitchcock heroine or someone traveling to Morocco, as he mentioned, it really had this very strong point of view that fused all of his ideas into this very cohesive aesthetic world. And he really just brought together this sense of elegance, almost nostalgic dressing. A lot of it felt very 50s inspired to me, even down to the way that the show was presented. I think from that point of view, he was able to create this storytelling element without having such a distinct theme, which I thought was really interesting.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah, it was such a gorgeous collection, and I love that. I feel like I always see all over the Internet after his shows, people saying, that he really designs for women, and you can just see that he builds out this lifestyle of this, like, luxurious, stylish lady. And it's just clothes that you actually want to wear, but they're still so impactful.
Kristen Nichols
I think that was, like, one of the themes I've noticed at New York Fashion Week that's kind of carrying over from Fashion Month last season, as designers are putting women at the center of their designs and what it means to dress like a modern woman. Even if it might have references from the past. I'll be interested to see how that evolves throughout Fashion Month.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah, me too. Tara sent in a cute voice note where she talks about the Sandy Liang show, which is always a huge who, what, wear favorite. She fell in love with Sandy Lang's latest collection and the universe that she created through her clothes. So let's hear her talk a little bit about the Sand Sandy show.
Tara Gonzalez
I am a Sandy Liang Die Hard fan. I have loved her clothing ever since she first started her line. And I especially loved this last collection. Immediately. I was like, this feels so different, but still such a part of her universe, which I think is hard to do. But even if you saw it without the context of it being on the Runway and knowing it was a Sandy Liang show, you'd be able to tell it was her. But like I said, it was really different. It was really, really colorful. A lot of textures, so much nostalgia, which we know that she loves. But I think you can totally see the influence of her being a new mom. And I think she was inspired by Furby's Morning Glory Planners, which I had so many of those growing up. There's just so many things that she touches on that I'm like, oh, I forgot that that is a memory deep in my subconscious that makes me really happy to think about my girlhood. And I also think that very much in the way that Mew Mew and Prada sets trends. I feel like Sandy sets trends for the downtown New York girl. And I think that we're going to be seeing this collection very much influencing how people will be dressing in the next couple of months. She had the tights underneath that were white and patterned that are footless, so, you know, they end right above the ankle. And then you have a shoe, which I feel like that look is so 90s. So 2000s, she had fleece, two sets. She had these really funky accessories as well. Green bags. There was prize ribbons, which I thought was really interesting. That kind of replaced her bows for this season, which we all know that she Loves a bow. But I thought the prize ribbon was really fun to see, like, attached to dresses and sweaters and hoodies. And I think that definitely we're gonna start seeing people accessorize with that. And I feel like the collection didn't take itself too seriously, which she doesn't take herself too seriously, so that makes sense. But there's a lot of more, like, kookiness. Like, on a sweater, there was, like, a little sweater at the bottom of it, or there was a skirt that I think had, like, little skirts on it, and then there was, like, a dress that, like, little dresses on it. And that was just really fun to see. After the show, I was wondering how other editors would be feeling about the collection, because it was really different for her. And so many people were like, I love this. I love that she just has range. And there's not, like, that many brands that are able to be more than the clothing that are able to create something that people really want to be a part of. And I'm just always in awe of how she is able to do that.
Lauren Eggertson
Okay, Kristen, are there any, like, specific looks that you really can't get out of your head or any that you think will be seeing shot a lot in editorials? Like, is there one look where you're just like, yeah, that was it?
Kristen Nichols
So I feel like the Marc Jacobs show that actually kicked off Fashion Week a little bit ahead of schedule had these looks that I just want to see in an editorial immediately. They had these dramatic doll like proportions. It is kind of a continuation of what he's done for a few seasons now, but it just feels like it's meant to be in a really fun editorial, so hopefully that will happen.
Lauren Eggertson
Yes. I love the proportions of those looks. It's just so out there, and that's kind of what makes editorials exciting anyways. So I know it's a little bit early to, like, fully call out trends, but I'm curious if there are some themes bubbling and trends that you and the team have noticed this week.
Kristen Nichols
Yeah. So I think one thing I've been actually noticing off of the runways are skirt sets. It's something I've seen Kendall Jenner wear a lot. She has all these really beautiful vintage skirt sets. She wore an Alberta Ferretti version in Paris recently, and then they've since then been popping up all over the runways. At Calvin Klein, there were very minimal versions. At Tory Burch, as I mentioned, it was kind of these new look versions with an A line skirt and a peplum blazer. And Then at Kate, the animal print ones. So not that skirt sets are anything new necessarily, but I think we're starting to see them with longer midi skirt lengths, which I'm personally trying to track down a version for my wardrobe, but that was one that I really loved. And then, of course, it being fall, there's always really great outerwear. And this. There were beautiful shearling jackets and coats, and they were just a lot of them very dramatic. I think especially at Altazara, we saw a lot of different versions of these. And then at twp, which is another show that's semi new to the Fashion Week calendar, they had a beautiful coat there. And then at Tory Burch, that was one of the buzziest pieces was this kind of grayish shearling coat that is just so stunning. I still need to go back and study all the trends a little bit more, but those were a few that stood out to me that kind of crossed the line of being fun trends that we'll be reporting on as well as pieces I know all of our editors already want in their closets.
Lauren Eggertson
Oh, my gosh. I know that Tory jacket was gorgeous. So I'm excited to see what other kinds of micro trends or subversions of that, like, hairier outerwear world kind of pop up throughout the season.
Kristen Nichols
Mm.
Lauren Eggertson
Okay. So obviously, Fashion Month is a huge moment for brands individually, and we are able to identify through this new trends and it items. But I know specifically as editors, and I think other people who are editors should also try to pay more attention to this as well. But within each show, I feel like we're always paying attention to the styling of each of these looks. It's not just about the individual items or the individual trends. It's about how to wear clothes and new ways to think about using the items that you might already have in your wardrobe. So I'm curious if there's any new styling techniques that kind of stood out to you so far.
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah.
Kristen Nichols
So one thing I noticed a lot, and this is highly specific, but seemed to pop up everywhere, were these tassels that came in the form of jewelry, whether kind of like on a corded necklace or bags with some sort of tassel. I just saw this today at the Kallmeier show, which they utilized in a lot of looks. And then this was also at Altazara, and it was just like, a very fun, easy to execute trend that can take something very simple and add that element of styling to it. And then this is something that I'm personally invested in in my wardrobe. But I think we're not seeing any slowdown of slingback heels. And this season at Altazara, they were paired with tights. And as I mentioned earlier, Tory Burch also had tights. A lot of them were like, just semi sheer tights. No, really like funky colors. More neutrals, in fact. But we've seen a lot of the colorful versions pop up everywhere else, so I feel like that's a fun trend because you can really take it at your speed based on how adventurous you're feeling with color.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah, I love tights. I feel like they do transform an outfit. Tara again, noticed some unique and fun styling tricks at the Coach show, so let's listen to her thoughts at the Coach show.
Tara Gonzalez
I just wanted to point out that I loved the little bag necklaces that a lot of the models were wearing. So they essentially were wearing these longer necklaces that had little bags on them, and I thought it was so cute. And I feel like there's an Alaia necklace that's also like that. But I just feel that as bags are getting bigger and people are moving away from super teeny bags favor of something that's more practical. Obviously, though, we've been seeing people trying to make them a little bit more fun with bag accessories, which, by the way, at the co show, there are so many cute stuffed animals attached to the bags that I absolutely will be needing, like fuzzy teddy bears that had the cutest eyes ever, and I could not stop smiling when I looked at them. People are trying to make those bags, you know, that seem a little bit corporate. Maybe because they're big enough to fit your laptop. They're adding these little charms to make them really fun and playful. But I also think that this necklace with a little bag is another thing that we're going to see people, because people still love a little bag. There's something so cute about it. But I think this makes it more practical because you can wear it as a necklace and still carry a big bag, and it adds a little something different to the outfit that feels unexpected.
Lauren Eggertson
Okay, so we talked about trends on the Runway, but were there any trends on the street style set that stood out to you? And I'd love to know what you've been wearing to the shows because you're a street style star on your own. So I want to know what you were focusing on this week.
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah.
Kristen Nichols
So I feel like the more fashion weeks I attend, the more I just like to kind of work with what I already have in my closet. This season, I was feeling particularly inspired by some Old images on Pinterest. I love just kind of like going back to references that maybe have been there for years and kind of feel core to what inspires me and my personal style. So there was a particular look from the fall 2004 Balenciaga Runway designed by Nicolas Ghesquier. That is this really beautiful tailored camel coat that has a stole designed on it. And I wore pieces from my closet to kind of imitate that look in a sense. So that was one that I wore. And then there was another look, a Michael Kors designed look for when he worked at Celine. That is a faux crocodile skirt with a knit sling back heels and just wafer sunglasses. So I pulled together some pieces I had in my closet to try to put my own spin on that. So those were a few looks I wore. And then of course, just some easy denim and coats and warm layers because it's been pretty cold this week.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah. Oh my gosh. You looked amazing. I love that look with the stole. I did notice, I have to ask, you didn't wear any tights or anything and it was snowing and I was so worried about you.
Kristen Nichols
Yes, I made some really ill advised shoe choices this season, but since I just moved from LA like a year and a half ago, I am still working on appropriate footwear.
Lauren Eggertson
There's this iconic photo of you. I forget if it's one you posted or if I saw someone else post. It's like Kristin walking through the snow in her little mule with like no tights. And I was just like, this is so iconic.
Kristen Nichols
I haven't seen that.
Lauren Eggertson
Oh, no, there's one. Maybe it was like a street style photographer and I was dying. I was like, this is so amazing. It's like you look so chic, so it was worth it. Okay, what was the general vibe of street style for the other attendees, would you say? Did you notice anything specific? Like, obviously outerwear, but if there were any little call outs for our audience?
Kristen Nichols
Yeah, I think for the fall shows, which happen in February, it's usually pretty cold. So it really is about just having a really great coat. And so there were so many great coats, really beautiful shearling ones, some dramatic faux fur. We have talked a lot about the funnel neck trench coats, and a lot of people wore those with the collars up. And it just gives that really beautiful silhouette. So those are some pieces I felt personally inspired by. And then I think overall we've been chatting about this after the spring 25 collections and Prada had a their whole show was really about this idea. Of individuality and a call to action in a sense of bringing back personal style that was just very evident on the street style scene. It really felt like people were wearing pieces from their closets and embracing what they were excited to wear. And so I love that. I think it's really fun, of course, to see all the new trends and how everyone interprets those, but also just seeing people really excited to dress based on what their personal sense of style is.
Lauren Eggertson
Yeah. Our editors, Anna and Tara, also have some thoughts about tracking down some of these street style trends, so let's hear what they have to say.
Kristen Nichols
Hi.
Anna Laplaca
Anna Laplaca, senior fashion editor, dropping in from New York Fashion Week to report on the street style scene. It has been absolutely freezing this week in New York, and I think a lot of showgoers have been leaning into really strong outerwear looks with statement coats. There's been a lot of fur and shearling moments. In addition, I feel like there has been a lot of these belted moments. So people using one, maybe two or three even belts to cinch the waist of their coat or their blazer, specifically. Seeing a lot from a brand called D Haunch. It's one of my personal favorites. I know a lot of my editor friends also have belts from this brand, but they do a lot of great statement leather. Just ran into my friend Jasmine, who was wearing one of their pierced belts on top of her green coat, and it looked fabulous.
Tara Gonzalez
There are so many colorful tights, and I mean this in the editors and influencers and guests attending shows were wearing colorful tights, and not just a sheer burgundy tight, which we've been seeing. It was, like, purple, green, blue, just so much color. And they weren't even just letting that be, like, the little statement color of their outfit. They were mixing that with more patterns and more colors, and it was really fun to see. My working hypothesis is that maximalism is going to come back in a big way in, like, more kooky, kind of quirky style again, which it's not that that ever went away, but I feel like we saw people really gravitating towards quiet luxury, and I just feel like maximalism is coming back, and I just feel like we also saw that a lot on the Runway, but it was really interesting to kind of see that in street style before that trend even emerged on the Runway. So it definitely feels like something that it's in everybody's subconscious. I also wore a lot of colorful tights too, so I contributed to that.
Lauren Eggertson
Okay, so clearly, I know Fashion Month is just beginning. But I'm curious, based on what you've seen so far in New York, if you have any predictions about what's to come for the rest of the month?
Kristen Nichols
Obviously, this won't pertain to all the collections, but I think there have been some really great shows that feel very intimate in terms of, like, the setting and who is attending. Kalmar was an example of that, and Altazara. Not that that's a trend necessarily, but I think it's nice that designers are having this really intimate experience with guests at some of their shows. So I'll be interested to see how that continues throughout Fashion Month and then tying back to the street style scene and individuality and personal style, I think that that's something we're also going to be seeing carry through to street style as well as the collections throughout Fashion Month. Lastly, I think one of the biggest themes I noticed just from the collections as a whole was just this continuation of elegant and sophisticated style. A lot of the collections just felt very polished and really had almost nostalgic references. I don't believe anyone called this out in their show notes, but to me, a lot of them felt like references from the 50s and 60s, whether Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly. Just this kind of other era of dressing, I think has returned to the runways, and I was interested to see if we would see the pendulum swing in another direction, but it seems to be continuing in that direction. So excited to see how that plays out in London and Milan and Paris.
Lauren Eggertson
I'm very excited to see what's to come. It feels like it's been a great, really strong start, and fall is obviously such a backbone for the rest of the year and the other styles and kind of directions that we're seeing. So it's a really exciting time in our little world. Well, thank you so much, Kristen. It was so fun hearing all your thoughts, and I can't wait to see what else you come up with after you go to London and experience all of the shows there. And I'm sure we'll have lots to chat about when the month wraps up.
Kristen Nichols
Yeah. So exciting. Thanks for having me.
