Hello, it's Giles Whittell from Tortoise. Welcome to the news meeting. Welcome back. Sky News's Yalda Hakim. Hello.
Yalda Hakim
Hello.
Giles Whittell
Okay, so this is the headline bit.
Patricia
Patricia, delete your data. Cat, mine's winging it.
Giles Whittell
Ah, nice. I see the beginnings of a pun there.
Yalda Hakim
And Yalda, China, ready for war.
Giles Whittell
First, more from Cat.
Yalda Hakim
Heathrow was shut down after a massive blaze broke out at a nearby substation. The chief executive of Heathrow is coming under fire for having gone to bed. I landed in Heathrow the previous day and actually we had a harmful escape. Yeah, yeah, I actually thought that a lucky escape.
Patricia
I also had a family member flying in Saturday morning and they were coming in from California.
Giles Whittell
Did they turn around?
Patricia
No, no, they made it. They landed. It was Saturday morning. Everything was operating again.
Giles Whittell
Yeah, boring.
Yalda Hakim
Last week, I was in India and I was at a global security summit with the top admirals and generals looking after the South China Sea. China is a formidable rival to the United States, and it'll be interesting to see whether, over Taiwan, the United States steps in.
Giles Whittell
Now, Patricia, tell us more about delete your data.
Patricia
So this is the story of the biotech company 23andMe, which has filed for bankruptcy. This company was huge. In around 2021, it peaked at a value of 5.8 billion. They used to have these very glamorous spit parties in Silicon Valley. So, you know, Snoop Dogg, Eva Longoria, Oprah Winfrey, all kind of endorsed it. I think all of that is quite interesting. But the bigger question is, what happens to that data? What happens to the data of 15 million people?
Giles Whittell
You'd be bothered about that.
Yalda Hakim
I would be. Everyone has a lot of our data, but, like, kind of our genetics and the insides. I don't know.
Patricia
It's been quite a scary episode.
Yalda Hakim
In general, I would say welcome to 2025.
Patricia
Heart's beating quite fast.
Giles Whittell
All right. We're not in the business of scaring people. Let me put it another way. The world is never quite as scary as it seems if you only read the headlines. How about that? If you'd like to listen to the full episode, search for the news meeting. Wherever you get your podcasts.
