Lance Armstrong
If that's your fight, if anti doping is your fight, and this is one of your solutions, and at some point you realize that it's not enough. They're not doing enough. Let me just tell you, the next step from here. That's not 1am or 3:30am the next step from here is the riders are obligated to stay in a local rehab facility, a local jail. We will control them and stare at them 24 7.
Bradley Wiggins
And that would be effective.
Lance Armstrong
That is. That would be 100% effective. That's the next step from here. So if you. If everybody's cool with that, well, then have at it. But that's. That's next. And we are back. Welcome back to the Move podcast. I'm Lance Armstrong, joined by Sir Bradley Wiggins, Sir George Hinkapie and the Professor Spencer Martin. Today's a big day. It's the day of the root canal. So, George, it's been great having you this year.
George Hincapie
Yeah, thank you.
Lance Armstrong
We got the substitution all sorted out. Probably won't be able to talk tomorrow. We are talking about stage 16. Boy, I mean, flying. It's almost over.
George Hincapie
Yeah,
Lance Armstrong
time flies. Alan, What. What happened today?
Bradley Wiggins
Stage 16.
Lance Armstrong
From Evian, Lebanon to Tono Lesbar. From Evian Les to Tono Les. Perfect. Perfect. Remco of Annabel. I mean, fantastic. Two stages in a row. Spencer, you sort of floated this while we were watching. I never thought about it this way, but it's worth a discussion. You said, is Remco the greatest time trialist ever? Now, I guess that you were basing that on what, three world championships and Olympic gold?
Bradley Wiggins
Seemingly undefeated and just how unstoppable he is. Head to head, like, I guess, relative dominance to the rest of the field. Three world championships and counting. You would assume so if you like, you know, Cancelara won four. If he gets five, six world Championships, that's.
Spencer Martin
Yeah. But you have to remember that the world time trial title only came into existence in 1994. So the likes of Greg LeMond, Miguel Indrain didn't get to compete in multiple world championships. The Olympic title only became open to the professionals in 96, so Indrain won that. So we're talking about a fairly new discipline in terms of world titles and Olympic titles. And you go back to the likes of Jacon Cotil, who was dominant in time trialing. Eddie Merckx was dominant in time trialing. We, we. We're not seeing the full picture, but Remco, you have to say, is. Is the best of his day and, and will be up there. With anyone in the past.
Bradley Wiggins
Here's an unscientific way to think about when's the last time you can remember him losing a time trial. It's actually hard to think off the
Lance Armstrong
top of your head.
George Hincapie
Not only that, but a natural time trial specialist. But he got the powerhouse brand like Specialized behind them, doing a lot of R D on just himself as a rider. Like his individual position, I mean, they spent a lot of time in the tunnel. I don't think the. The guys in the past had that much attention from their bike supplier.
Spencer Martin
It's very difficult to compare. And then you look at someone like Chris Boardman, he. He's almost identical to Remco. If you look back at the prologue in Lille in 94, Boardman changed the game in terms of aerodynamics. He was way ahead of his time. Yeah. And so it's very difficult to compare based on the technology that's available now, the aerodynamics and things like that.
George Hincapie
That said, you still got to get through this course. I mean, we saw a guy like Lipowitz, po Guy, one of the best bike handlers in the world, almost crashed. I mean, he's got to have total composure. The pressure of the world on him. Belgium national, what was a day or something like that. But, I mean. And he still pulls it off. So he's, I mean, having an incredible Tour de France right now.
Bradley Wiggins
It was super impressive. One of the most. It's the latest time trial win he's had in a Grand Tour. And I'd say combined with the climbing performance on stage 15, it's the best I've ever seen Remco, at least in a stage racing.
George Hincapie
And when we see that guy get momentum, like, look what he did at the Olympics. I mean, won the time trial, rode away from everybody in the road race, and now he's got that momentum. Two stage wins back to back, heading into a hard final week. He's looking good. I mean, I feel like Red Bull Boar has got to be really happy with where they're sitting.
Lance Armstrong
And you left one thing out. You touched on Leowitz crashing and crashing out of the Tour. I mean, I think that's a big deal for Rimco. And I, I don't even. I. I still don't understand that, or maybe I do, but these are two in a row. His, his, the internal threat, whether. Whether or not he was named the leader or whatever is. It was there, but now it's gone. I think he shapes up nicely. Look at you. Look at the GC sitting firmly in second. Right. He is A long ways behind Poguchar. Anything can happen. We saw Pogi Pogie didn't just slip a wheel, he slipped both wheels on the same corner. That Lipowitz.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
George Hincapie
Nine out of ten guys are going down.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah, that was, I mean, we're watching this going, whoa, whoa, whoa. There's no need. And even he said it in his post race interview that, that he knew that he was far enough behind Remco. No reason to take risks. Just ride conservatively. Nonetheless. Still, I mean, I thought the course was questionable at best. Absolutely questionable thoughts on that. We can get into later. But Remco, four and a half minutes down. Del Toro sitting in third six, 51 down. So he's got a comfortable lead. He's got the momentum. He's won two stages in a row. I think three or four days ago we would have said he's going to lose 10 minutes one of these days. I now don't think that happens.
George Hincapie
Yeah. Which, back to your. I know you guys were questioning the course. I kind of like, personally, I liked it. I mean, yes, time trial is about holding that power, having the most aerodynamic position, but also getting around these corners. It makes it to me a bit more exciting, a bit more technical. You're at 190, 100, 200. Heart rate and you still have to have the composure to set up the perfect line in these, in these technical corners. I think it makes it exciting.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
And that, that, that isn't my issue. I don't know how, you know, I get up real early and watch the stages. You might have been. You were probably slipping in, getting ready
Bradley Wiggins
for the root canal.
Lance Armstrong
I was up early. The early riders were having to navigate through people that were crossing the course.
George Hincapie
Oh, yeah.
Lance Armstrong
On the climb, on the downhills, on the crosswalk, people just. There was a crosswalk and they were, they were letting people cross in front of the course. You imagine that in a bit in, in a car. I mean, obviously if you want to cross the course and you want to manage spectators, which, which we have to have, and it's great that they're there, but it's even better that we know how to manage them. That's either a tunnel or a bridge. You cannot go across the course. When guys are, look, I mean, they showed the moto behind rimco is going 96km an hour at one point downhill, folks, for those who sitting around driving an mph, that's 60 miles an hour. You cannot have humans, spectators, fans, supporters crossing the actual course. That's crazy.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah, that is crazy. That, yeah. It's there almost is like a hypnosis too at a race where people tend to cross right when the riders get close. I don't know what it is about it, but you'll see it like, you'll see it happen where they like, they wait, wait, they go right when the
Lance Armstrong
writers, I don't think the average person understands how fast this peloton goes. We've seen it and, and we've seen it in the past with people trying to take photos and what they're focused on is the lens of their, the, the phone. They're focused on the camera. So that's not a true indication of depth. And these guys are going fast. So it's, it's. And it surprises people.
Spencer Martin
Right.
Lance Armstrong
And nonetheless, I mean, I thought that if you just looked at the profile, you looked at the dynamics of the race, the nice climb at the start. I do like a technical run in, but make those corners safe. I also think it falls on the riders too. I mean we have to, we have to say these guys and I know we were really. I'm sure you were too, Bradley. It's one thing to know a course and it's one thing to preview a course, but when you do, I mean, you can do it a time or two easy, but then in your brain you have to identify, say, okay, I just went around this corner at 20 km an hour in the race. I'm going to be going 40 kilometers an hour on, you know, whether it's one, two or five different corners, you have to turn around and say, okay, now I'm going to take this at race speed and see because that is, that's, that's a different video game.
George Hincapie
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Spencer Martin
And the problem with doing that is, is, is there's only a certain time within the day that you can see the course when it's fully closed. And also within where it's barriered, where it's, you know, so the corner that they all crashed on, well, two of what Taddy nearly crashed on, but Lipovitz crashed on you, you, he was going to the other side of a central reservation, which is why it was so heavily padded. And you know, so things like that, if, no matter how many times you preview, if you preview an open road, you don't know which way they're going to bury it to take that line. So it's very, very difficult. Tad actually said in his post race interview that the corner that he, he wanted to look at, where Lipovich crashed, he couldn't see properly because there was Organization cars on that corner. So when he came to the corner, he didn't realize that it was quite as challenging as it was.
George Hincapie
But at the same time, it's also the director's responsibility to see.
Spencer Martin
I agree.
George Hincapie
Catano was leading. He was in the hot seat. Obviously, he did a really good time. Like they had a follow car. It's their job to make notes of that corner. Like, okay, this is a sharp corner. Kind of closes in on you on the way out. Like, they need to be reminding their top guys that constantly.
Lance Armstrong
I mean, this is how we would have operated. I know. This is the way you guys would have operated. The first rider that went through there, even if he was guy number eight on the team, he's still going fast through that corner. And they see it.
Spencer Martin
That.
Lance Armstrong
That is an apb.
George Hincapie
Yep.
Lance Armstrong
Right. That's an all points bulletin where you immediately tell everybody and. And constantly reminding these guys, hey, Florian, you are 500 meters from that corner. You know. Anyways, let's talk about the move of the day. I think we're all gonna. You know, this is probably a unanimous one. Maybe not. The move of the day brought to you by eight Sleep. The pod by eight Sleep is a smart mattress cover that easily goes on top of existing mattresses, heats or cools with each side of the bed independently anywhere from 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, Eight Sleep is the official partner of UAE Team Emirates. Use the code the move@8sleep.com themove through the end of the tour get you 350 bucks off. So, Bradley.
Spencer Martin
Well, I mean, of course, the obvious one is Remco. You know, he's the best in the world. The, you know, the. The level of expectation on him on a course like that, world champion, Olympic championship, to execute a ride like that in the way that he did with the pressure that's on him, of course, and. And a lot of itself, you know, put pressure on himself. Brilliant. Right? But I also want to give a special mention to Scale Moser. I think that's probably the best time Charlie's ever done.
Lance Armstrong
Yep.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
By the way, finished third on the stage. Yeah, y. I mean, for you folks out there, that bet. I mean, that would have been the bet. I mean, nobody saw that coming. Hell of a ride.
George Hincapie
Yeah, that's my. My ride. The move of the day with Skelmosa fighting this whole last two weeks with the top 10 overall in GC, you know, didn't have one easy day. Comes out with an incredible ride and comes out of the rest Day hot like. Which indicates he's going to have a really good final week. You saw the look at the top. The race for second is still on, y'. All and it's going to be one of the most exciting podium races we've seen in a long time. And I think it's, yeah, it's, it's going to be good to watch.
Lance Armstrong
I'm going to. When Spencer gives us his move of the day, I'm going to talk about some other races that are going to get exciting.
Bradley Wiggins
I mean, just to zag. I, I want to. I'm acknowledging Remco had a great ride.
Lance Armstrong
Yep.
Bradley Wiggins
Del Toro, I thought, huge ride that no one will talk about. Like, people thought he was going to lose a lot of time to Paul. 6us holds that third position. That's huge for the white jersey and
Spencer Martin
podium and for that podium, 20 seconds now between them. I mean, talk about a race we're going to have this week and how Tade is going to manage that situation, the dynamic, because he's obviously chasing the win with Remco hot on his tail, if you like. I know he's four and a half minutes down, but, but how much of that, how much he's going to have to help his teammate try and get on the podium? Because we saw, we saw that the first sort of bits of that the other day on that climb, didn't we?
George Hincapie
Yeah, we can't, we can't discount 19 year old Saigsaw. Still incredible in there amongst the best guys in the world. Two weeks into five days together, first Grand Tour.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
George Hincapie
I mean he just continues to impress.
Spencer Martin
Incredible.
Lance Armstrong
Well, these are, this is what I was going to say the three races. Right. This is, this is going to be fun to watch this fight for the podium and within that podium.
George Hincapie
Right.
Lance Armstrong
The fight for second.
George Hincapie
Right.
Lance Armstrong
That's. If you're gonna, if, if you had to agree to be on the podium, you'd rather be second than third. So that's going to be interesting. To the white jersey. These people look, these races aren't interesting. If the, if the guys don't care, Paul Seychelles and Isaac Del Toro, they care. Like it's going to be a real race. So let's watch it unfold. And third. And this is one that I'm not sure that people care about. So I need some help from the team here. Team classification. Now. I'm not, I'm not sure if what I'm looking at on my screen is accurate. Little Trek only has a 23 second lead over Team UAE, which is not a lot. After two and a half weeks, you got to go down 46 minutes to find the third place team. This is a two team race. So does UAE care? Yeah, I would think, because they had.
Bradley Wiggins
They had guys ride hard today just for that, like Felix.
Lance Armstrong
And they do care.
Bradley Wiggins
Groschartner, he should have sat up and taken it easy. Right. Because he's got a lot of work to do the rest of the race. They had them ride hard specifically for the team.
Lance Armstrong
Well, then, I mean, that's. There's no doubt that can influence a race.
George Hincapie
Spencer spoke about it earlier, like, how important is that for the team? For guys like myself that have done tons of Tour de France's have helped you win. Tour de France is like, to be on the podium with your teammates in Paris, like, that is an amazing feeling. And you're going to work your ass off to try to get that feeling. Secondly, I want to point out, like, how are the tactics going to change within uae? Because is Poker going to go all in to help Del Toro stay on the podium or is he going to continue to try to win stages? What has a big difference there If
Bradley Wiggins
Remco drops Del Toro, does Pagacha go with Remco or stay with Del Toro?
George Hincapie
Yeah, I mean, that's gonna make this race very dynamic. It's the last.
Lance Armstrong
No brainer. I mean, he has to go with Remco. Well, he's in the old jersey, so now we're.
Bradley Wiggins
I'll take you guys into my world. Into the newsroom.
George Hincapie
Yeah.
Bradley Wiggins
And this is beautiful because let's say he goes with Remco. Oh, he's a traitor to his team. He left Del Toro. They're gonna write these stories.
George Hincapie
Yeah, for sure.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah. This is beautiful.
Lance Armstrong
That's because they're cycling journalists.
Bradley Wiggins
Oh, it's.
George Hincapie
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
And we saw the dumbest stories ever.
George Hincapie
We saw two. We saw two days ago when he's on the radio, he's like, can I basically, can I go harder? And Del Toro's like, no, don't drop me. Yeah, so how is that going to change in the final week? I mean, he can drop him if he wants to. He probably can drop Remco if he wants to. He can go for stage wins. Or is he going to go all in to help Del Toro? This is going to change.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
George Hincapie
We don't know the answer, but it's going to change the tactics dramatically in this last week of the Bradley.
Lance Armstrong
What's he do?
Spencer Martin
I think he just continues riding like he's done in the first Two weeks and. And throws everything to the wind and goes himself and Del Toro can stay with Remco behind.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah, that would be the most fun.
Bradley Wiggins
And that kind of makes sense because Remco would be a de facto teammate for Del Toro because he never changes his pace. Just stay on that guy's wheel, follow him in. But I don't know. I have a bad feeling that Tad is gonna not do a lot, I think, like. Right, just play defense.
George Hincapie
Unfortunately, Del Toro needs today to remain in that podium position. I think he really needs him just
Lance Armstrong
to go back to the team thing for a second. I, I have to say, I'm. I am shocked at the performance of Team Ineos. I mean, here with the legacy, with the history, you know, better than anybody.
George Hincapie
Bradley.
Spencer Martin
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
With the budget we talked about, this time trial we talked about, now, maybe, you know, it's two weeks, two plus weeks into the Tour, Ghana would logically show some fatigue. This team is non existent. They had a rider miss the start today. I mean, this is a $40 million year budget with all the history, all the legacy, all the wins, sort of this Swiss precision. This is a team that is rudderless. I mean, if the Tour ended today and we were handing out grades, pretty clear what the grade is it. It's.
Spencer Martin
Yeah. I mean, look, they, they, they. They did lose Oscar only coming into this race, didn't they? And he was their big transfer, winter transfer, big GC rider to solve this exact problem. Yeah, yeah. And. And, you know, he had a horrendous crash, didn't he, in the Dofana.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Spencer Martin
So they had to rethink their strategy in a couple of weeks. Kevin Voan, seventh last year, I believe, or eighth last year. He was sick coming into the race.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Spencer Martin
So, you know, got off to a bad start in the prologue with the puncture as well as being sick. And so they've. They've kind of been a team without a cause really, since then. Bernal was drafted in at the last minute to replace On Lee. Of course, he did the Giro, so it's, it's been challenging for them. But one thing we did say was a team that size, you know, a team with that bigger budget, the team with that many riders, it seems funny that they were scrabbling around at the last minute for a replacement.
Lance Armstrong
Having lost their best rider at this
Bradley Wiggins
race is time in Arnsman.
Spencer Martin
Yeah.
Bradley Wiggins
Which did the Giro.
George Hincapie
Yeah.
Spencer Martin
He won two stages last year, didn't he?
George Hincapie
Yeah, but that's, that's what I was gonna say. Like, he did the Giro. Probably a little bit off in the beginning of the Tour. Did a great time shot today. Really good time.
Bradley Wiggins
It's a great third week.
George Hincapie
Yeah, so he's a great third week rider. I think he's still got a really good shot to win a stage in his final week.
Lance Armstrong

Bradley Wiggins
Oh, yeah. I'm glad I'm not man in that line.
Lance Armstrong
Colton. We're going to blame Colton for all this. Let's do it at 22. Okay. Unless we don't have anything to say.
Bradley Wiggins
Well, I was going to ask you guys why. Why are the big time trial specialists not good on days like today?
George Hincapie
I think they're just exhausted. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, did the Giro. I mean, typically today's course is really good for a guy like that, but they're just. They just must be crawling on their hands and knees. It's.
Bradley Wiggins
It's.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah. No matter who knows what their season was like before, if you had done another grand tour, that takes it out of you. It's been two and a half weeks. It's been incredibly hot. This is a hard time trial, too. I mean, you saw Remco. I mean, Remco just chewed up the road.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
It's not. It's not like starting a world championships on this course where you come in perfectly prepared and you're tapered and you're just ready to go. Right. When they say go, I just think they're.
Spencer Martin
It's a, It's a funny day, the time trial at the Tour, you know, it's. It's a very. It's a very long, drawn out affair from the first guys that are going off that are way down the GC to the last guys that, you know, it's four or five hours. So, you know, arriving at the start two hours before your start time, if you're way down on GC and going off in is. It's quite a casual affair. All the staff are kind of. And it doesn't. There's not that intensity and hype. I mean, we didn't see many people today with like the calling buckets and things that we saw at the start in Barcelona. Yeah, it's almost a kind of trimmed down affair where it's like, oh, God, here we go. I'm going to treat. Do I go full gas on this one and am I going to be even a pole at the end who's really got something to race for? And so it does favor different people.
George Hincapie
Yeah. You think probably 20% of that whole entire peloton are actually going for it.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
George Hincapie
And think they might have a chance and to get a top 10. The rest of the guys just like, just get to the finish line, try to recover for the next day and
Spencer Martin
someone like Ghana will go through the motions and the warm up and he'll go out there and go, I'll see how I feel. You know, once I'm out there, I'll know how I'm feeling whether I'm on one or not. And often this far into a race, you don't know until you get out there. Yeah, yeah.
Lance Armstrong
And he has no time checks.
Spencer Martin
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
Right. So he's out there early, you know, going off one of the first guys he's not able to compare himself to, to a guy like, I mean Remco has. Remco and Pogi, they, they are in the best position. They know every time check and they know there's nobody really behind them. Tade said it, he went through the first time check or the time check at the top of the climb and they told him, you're 15 seconds down. What does that say? His brain could tell him two things. Go harder and try to make up 15 seconds and win the stage. Or hey buddy, I got five minutes. Go easier, be conservative, do not hit the deck. Just get to the finish line and get second in the time trial.
Spencer Martin
Yeah. And then a lot of these guys would have had a nice mental rest day yesterday, not thinking about the time trial. And then today they'll be thinking about tomorrow's stage, which goes straight uphill at the start. You know, it's just, that's what the Tour de France does.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
Well, we're going to talk about tomorrow's stage. We are now. Yep. We're going to take our 232 for our friends at Peacock. We'll be right back. And we are back. Before we get into talking about tomorrow's stage, stage 17 continues to be, I think as there should be a lot of discussion about the situation with Dade Poguchar, Jonas Vincogaard, the 2am and the 5am Drug control tests in the middle of the night, not on a rest day. In the middle of the bike race. It continues to. The wheels continue to turn here. A lot of talk, a lot of new information that apparently there was,
Spencer Martin
there
Lance Armstrong
was an article that came out that said the testing agency had to go to a French federal judge and get sign off to be able to go do this. Now, that's kind of all we know or can read into it. It's been interesting. You know, there's, I think most people, even most people involved in the sport were like, no, this is crossing the line. And of course, this is cycling, so. Right. So you get these other people that are like, yep, absolutely. Wake them up anytime. I think they are stone cold fools for thinking that straight up. But it's just, you know, if I am walking through my day and I was, you know, I was on a golf course yesterday in the middle of nowhere. If a caddy at a golf course in the middle of nowhere is asking me about this because he heard about it or read about it, that there's your answer. This is crazy. Nobody would agree to this. Nobody.
Bradley Wiggins
And Bradley, I'm seeing reporting that it was on Saturday. That's when they went to the judge.
Lance Armstrong
Okay.
Bradley Wiggins
So I would love to know what evidence, like, they presented to that judge. Like, yeah. What?
Spencer Martin
I don't know.
Bradley Wiggins
I guess if you're the judge, though, it's low risk because you're not the one one getting woken up at two. So. Yeah, sure. Testament too. There's probably a low threshold there, I would assume.
Spencer Martin
Be interesting to know.
Lance Armstrong
Listen.
George Hincapie
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
If, if, if that's your fight, if anti doping is your fight and this is one of your solutions and, and at some point you realize that it's not enough. They're not doing enough. Let me just tell you the next step from here, that's not 1am or 3:30am the next step from here is the riders are obligated to stay in a local rehab facility, a local jail. We will control them and stare at them 24 7.
Bradley Wiggins
And that would be.
Lance Armstrong
That is. That would be 100% effective. That's the next step from here. So if you, if everybody's cool with that, well, then have at it. But that's. That's next.
Bradley Wiggins
And I think that's a good example, obviously an extreme one, but people are saying, oh, it's effective to test them at two. It's like, yeah, definitely, but at what cost? And where's the line here? Like, someone sent me, NBA players get tested four times a year with two weeks notice.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah, that's a little.
George Hincapie
I was going to say that, like, if you're going to do that, it has to be across all sports, not just like. Well, which would never happen.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right. That silence you hear is exactly right. It's called speechless. This is nuts.
Bradley Wiggins
It is, it is. Yeah. George brings up a good point.
Spencer Martin
It.
Bradley Wiggins
Why is it just the cycling? Yeah, yeah.
George Hincapie
I mean obviously we've, we've have the most history in that sense, but I mean it's. If it's an independent organization doing the testing, then why just focus on one sport? It should be all the sports and clear the. Clearly the other sports would never accept it or it wouldn't happen.
Bradley Wiggins
But they're picking on a week. A week. Lean, basically. Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
Vulnerability. All right, on that note, let's talk about stage.
George Hincapie
Stage.
Lance Armstrong
I'm telling you, it's just. This is. It's crazy. Anyways, stage 17, let's look at it. This one.
Spencer Martin
Another strange one.
Bradley Wiggins
A really strange stage.
Spencer Martin
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
I'll tell you, it's good for. It's good for these guys that, that, that for my favorite jersey. It's good for those guys. It's good for those guys that. Wait, listen. We can all agree who the best climber in the race is, but there's guys nipping at his heels for that jersey. Competition. This is perfect for them. They're going to be warming up. They're going to go from K0. They're going to get in the brakes. You get a 4, 4, 3, 4 points right there.
George Hincapie
That's not much compared to the.
Lance Armstrong
No, but these guys take them where they can get them.
Spencer Martin
But it's interesting.
George Hincapie
I think the stage is focused on like really breakaway specialist stage. Very hard to predict who's going to make it. But we know the guys that are riding well in this last part of the Tour de France, they're going to be there. The car passes all these guys going for a really complicated stage. I think it's going to be really exciting to watch.
Spencer Martin
Interesting. That sprint. How late it is on. Yeah. In the stage.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah, yeah. They've shifted them back here. In the last week we had two or three days where it was very early.
Spencer Martin
This is.
Lance Armstrong
The teams could control it now. They'll just have to. They're going to have to play their cards, try to get in the brakes. By the way, the point competition for my favorite jersey. Tadi Pogachar, who is the best climber in the race, is leading. He has 70 points. Valentin Per has 45 points. He will be in the break tomorrow.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah, he's a stud too. He's so such a good sprinter for how light he is by the way too.
Lance Armstrong
Car pass. Car pass. Sitting at 39 points, he will also be in the break tomorrow. But bet all your money on that.
George Hincapie
You know who else?
Bradley Wiggins
Pederson.
George Hincapie
Captain America.
Bradley Wiggins
With. With Mads Pederson. Probably.
George Hincapie
Probably. Yeah.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah. Well on that note, George, I. I also I printed out the rest all the detailed inform information with the rest of the stage went to the hot tub yesterday. I was pe peeking ahead.
Lance Armstrong
Where are you going with what a rest day. Spencer had
Bradley Wiggins
started. But is this is a crazy thought. So Quinn Simmons is going to be up there. Is this a sprint stage?
Lance Armstrong
No, no, no. It's a perfect stage for Quinn Simmons. Actually it is he. But he better play his cards right. There's no TV attacking by the way. The TV is also at the finish line. Wait for that. This is a perfect stage for him.
George Hincapie
I'm gonna say no comment on that
Lance Armstrong
one because I'm hyping your boy.
George Hincapie
I, I agree but he, he goes with everything. I mean and sometimes you have to. To be able to make those moves or. And even he's got to do not only try to make the breakaway but he's got to worry about his green jersey guy and Mads Peterson and his overall guys. There's a lot of stuff that he is responsible for.
Bradley Wiggins
But the last categorized climb is about 80k from the finish. You don't think Alpecin can get together and pull that back.
George Hincapie
I mean it's a great day for Vanderpoel too. I don't know what he did in the TT today, but he could def certainly be up there in the breakaways. Won that hard breakaway stage a couple last week, so they have a chance. I think it might be a bit too hard for Phillipson and it's about. It's very rolling coming into the finish as well. So it definitely suits a guy like Van der Poel.
Lance Armstrong
I'm going down areas 96 time trial
George Hincapie
which he had an amazing time trial towards. He probably took it easy thinking about tomorrow's stage.
Bradley Wiggins
So they. Those guys come to the line. Vanderpoel, Quinn Simmons. Who's winning?
Lance Armstrong
Wait, is it the two of them or is there a group? There are two amongst 10 or they're just the two.
George Hincapie
The problem, not many people know this. Quinn Simmons has got a really good sprint. No, he's very fast, but he's very fast, very strong. Long standing sprint. Obviously Vanderpoel is one of the best in the world, especially at a race like tomorrow. But man, that would be a tough.
Bradley Wiggins
Shouldn't have said that. You should like man, not many people know this but he's really slow he's actually terrible.
Spencer Martin
Yeah, I, I think this is going to be the first stage we see how Visma now raced the rest of the Tour as well. This is going to be the first stage that the. The handcuffs are off.
George Hincapie
Exactly.
Spencer Martin
You got the likes, of course, Jorgensen and, and their, their attempt to pick up a stage in this last week.
George Hincapie
Yeah. And they have, they have, they have
Spencer Martin
the writers as well.
George Hincapie
They have the riders and they have to get a stage. Yeah, they went all in on the Bendigo Vindicard bucket. Now they gotta pivot and get a stage one and they have the opening time trial.
Spencer Martin
But yeah, even Piganzoli, you know, he's, he did a good TT today.
Bradley Wiggins
Probably stage 18 or 1920 for pig and Zoli.
Spencer Martin
But something like Jorgensen, this is, this is great for him.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah, yeah.
Lance Armstrong
I might, I mean, I just did take a peek ahead for stage 18, but that, that might actually. You talk about Sepkus and Jorgensen, guys like that. Stage 18 actually suits them, I think a little better, but it also suits
Spencer Martin
a lot of others.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah.
Bradley Wiggins
Know how long it's been since an American won a stage at the Tour?
George Hincapie
Yeah, we talked about this.
Bradley Wiggins
Bradley Wiggins.
George Hincapie
Sepkus, right, Sepkus in 2021.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah, it's been a while. Need one.
Lance Armstrong
All right, let's, let's take some callers. We'll take. We're gonna do what. Let's do two calls today. Line is still open. Give us a shout. Leave us a voicemail number. 970-718-2736, 9707-182736. Coltland, who's on the line?
George Hincapie
Hey, guys.
Bradley Wiggins
Alan from New York, long time listener question about Jonas's crash. Road furniture, I think made a huge difference. Can you comment on this case and in the past, the lack of control for a definitive road furniture policy? Love the show. Thanks.
Spencer Martin
Thank you. Well, I mean, you know, there was a time where lots of these towns would take up the road furniture. Take out, take out the furniture, retarmac the route for a safe passage of the route. And it seems that they've got away from that.
Lance Armstrong
I agree.
Spencer Martin
And I guess that is, you know, the cost of it in these local towns. And someone's got to pay for that. But it has put more danger on the riders and the peloton.
George Hincapie
Yeah, yeah. Who knows? I mean, it's hard to tell. It looks like they were following the motorbike. The first three guys got around, Jonas had to sort of adjust on and that last minute corner, they went to the left instead of the right. And like, who knows what was going on in his head. A lot of pressure. They need to stage win, and you just make mistakes.
Lance Armstrong
And he didn't sleep the night before. Somebody was banging on his door at 2am yeah, I'm not gonna. I'm not. I'm not gonna stop talking about this. The other thing, I. Maybe there's been additional footage of it, but when I was watching and the footage that was available, it wasn't. They weren't really. There was some coverage of it. It was hard to see. So it's also hard to say, but I'm with you. I mean, I remember the day. I mean, let me just lay this out for you how this works, right? The Tour creates the route. Every small town or village in France wants the race. They certainly want a start or a finish, but they'll do anything to have the race just come through their town. So with that, there's economics involved in that, certainly for the starts and finishes. In the old days, yes, if you want to pay to have a finish, that's. That's the marquee ticket item for that day, then they would. You have seen it fairly recently. I mean, they will pave a road right down the middle of a big roundabout if it's close to the finish, and then after that, they'll go back and cover it up and put the flowers there and it's a roundabout again. But it does seem to me that they're doing less and less. Well, two things. One, there's more and more traffic for our road furniture than ever.
Bradley Wiggins
There's like significantly more even than when Bradley won.
Lance Armstrong
I mean, they. The. That's. That's the way municipalities control traffic and keep people in the lane that they're supposed to be in and. And manage the flow. But there's just more and more of it.
Spencer Martin
And, And.
Lance Armstrong
But it also. I'm with you. I think they're just doing less and less of this sort of deconstructing and then eventually reconstructing this. This road furniture.
Spencer Martin
Well, there was a time that they would read tarmac. The whole of the time travel.
Lance Armstrong
That's right, yeah.
Spencer Martin
Fresh tarmac.
Lance Armstrong
Who would pay for that?
Spencer Martin
Well, I guess it was part of the city. The city.
Lance Armstrong
It's part of the. If you're going to pay for the finish, then you should be prepared to pay for the repaving of a road
Spencer Martin
that was probably the cause of the crash of Lipovich today. We understand there was quite a few ripples.
Lance Armstrong
This is exactly what I was going to say. Yes. I mean, people are going to watch this, and if they don't watch it closely, they're going to see all the white paint. We all know what the white paint means, especially if it's been dry. It is slicker. Certainly if it rains, it's like ice. But if you look closely, that road just had some wave to it. His. I think that it was just the uneven nature of that particular corner that started his slide.
George Hincapie
Yeah, guys, let's not forget we're talking about European cycling. I mean, how many road furniture or splits in the pavement, like, that's our lives. That's. That's pro cycling. Like, you have to know always. I mean. Oh, it's, it's. I mean, I don't remember not having any road furniture. Remember the days when we started the Tour in Holland with a thousand roundabouts, road furniture everywhere in the middle. They have a lot of safety measures. They have motorbikes ahead, flagging it down. I'm not going to say there's more or less right now, but it's always been a part of the Tour. Never. I don't remember it being different than that.
Lance Armstrong
You're. You're both right and wrong. It has been a part of the Tour. And if it's. I think, think everybody would agree that it's okay if, if that 95% of the route we have to navigate those things, that final five, 10% where it's dangerous, where the speeds are high, where everything's on the line. This was Bradley's point, and I actually agree with it that in the past they would make it a big effort to go through and clean all that up and then reconstruct it. I just think they're not doing that anymore.
George Hincapie
Well, but in the past, would they do it? We're talking about 50k. What was it? 50k to go. Now, Jonas's crash, maybe towards the finish, last 5k, but I don't remember any changes. 100k.
Spencer Martin
Go.
George Hincapie
50k to go.
Bradley Wiggins
Towns are. Have never been poor, like, all, like all over the western world. These towns are broke. They have no money to do anything. And they're probably looking at asl like you're making more money than ever. Why am I gonna. We don't. Like, we don't have enough taxpayer dollars to do basic services. Why are we going to rip up a road?
Lance Armstrong
Well, the Tour, I, I can tell you where that discussion is going to end.
Spencer Martin
You think the emp emphasis on. On bikes, tires, wheels, aerodynamics and all this, the bikes are outdated in the road surfaces now. At times.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Spencer Martin
You know, it's not like a track or a velo drone where it's, you know, everything's prim and proper.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
Okay. Yeah.
Bradley Wiggins
But Garen Thomas had a decent point. Who was making the race fast right there? Visma.
Spencer Martin
Yes. Why Victor Campanov.
Bradley Wiggins
Why? Yeah, It's a decent question. Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
Before he crashed. Look, go back in our notes. On our own personal notes that we were making about that stage, which we do each and every day before we wrote down Jonas crashing out of the Tour de France. The note just on top of that was, why is Visma doing this? Yeah, but that was the next note up.
George Hincapie
That was back in our day. That was unacceptable. If any of our guys that were pulling were taking risks in the corners, you and Johan be like, what in the f are you guys doing? There's no need for this.
Lance Armstrong
I'd be screaming.
George Hincapie
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
I'll never forget George. I still. I still kind of hate him to this day. Because this cold. It was the cold ass, man. It was raining. Jan was up there. He had Clody, Clody go down downhill in the rain with his eyes closed. I was. I was just right. All breaks. Just please, please don't crash. George goes flying by me. I can't even see him. After 5k, I'm on the radio. Literally. I've never screamed that loud in my life. What the are you thinking? Get back here.
Bradley Wiggins
I was.
Lance Armstrong
I was terrified. Yeah. And I was, okay, like, fun. You, bro, you give me a dry road, Watch out. I'll go with anybody, man. The second there's a drop a kid from Plano.
Spencer Martin
Just.
Bradley Wiggins
Just. Probably why you won seven tours with a world championship.
Lance Armstrong
Well, that's when I was young. That's when I was young. And fair point. I was young. I got older, and I just. I got scared in the rain. Yeah, Fair point.
George Hincapie
All right.
Lance Armstrong
Wow, that was a long answer to question Alan.
George Hincapie
Great question.
Lance Armstrong
Thank you for calling. Number two guys.
Spencer Martin
Navy dolphins.
Lance Armstrong
I spent 13 years in special operations community.
George Hincapie
Lance.
Lance Armstrong
You'll remember Mitch Hall. We served together.
Bradley Wiggins
That's beside the point. The Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Community trains
Lance Armstrong
dolphins to hunt and find underwater mines. That's what Navy dolphins do.
Spencer Martin
Whoa.
Bradley Wiggins
Holy.
George Hincapie
That is badass.
Lance Armstrong
First of all, yeah, Mitchell. That's my dog. That's my dog. And secondly, maybe, and most importantly, thank you for your service.
George Hincapie
Yep.
Lance Armstrong
And third, I kind of thought they were navy blue, too. I didn't know about the same thing. I like Davey. I mean, as I read the fatty 15 thing, I'm like, navy dolphin. Yeah. That's not like a SEAL dolphin.
George Hincapie
That's a SEAL dolphin, dude.
Lance Armstrong
That's insanity.
George Hincapie
Insane.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah, well, because I capitalized Navy and I was like, is that really for the navy or is that the color of the dolphin? But this.
George Hincapie
Well, we learn something new every day on this show.
Lance Armstrong
Wow. That's a loyal listener. Breaking down the ads too. That's. It's got to be on YouTube, you know, like these special dolphins. I'm kind of speechless, but I'm glad.
George Hincapie
So, Spradley, Colin, you got any of those rolling around for clip for us?
Lance Armstrong
What? Navy dolphins?
George Hincapie
Yeah. May take him a minute.
Lance Armstrong
We have to.
Bradley Wiggins
George.
Lance Armstrong
Send George after his root canal today. We're going to send him over to SeaWorld. He'll be looking around. Excuse me. Anybody got any Navy dolphins? All right. Oh, Ventum trivia shoot.
Bradley Wiggins
All right.
Lance Armstrong
Bentam Trivia today enter to win $5,000 towards bike. Your choice could be like we prefer the GS1 or the NS1. These things are so sick, so fast. Handle great even in the rain. Yep. Head on over to ventumracing.com themove all right, Sunday's question. The Plateau de Solisol made its debut as a tour finish stage in 2015. We were talking about that. Never done it. However, they did do it in the old Dauphiny Libre. I'm just going to keep calling it Dolphin a Libre. Yeah, that's it. So they did it basically as a. I suspect is almost a preview since the tour has never done it. Let's. Let's show the boys what this is like. The question was, who won that? Which promising young rider won there, attacking 9K from the finish. The answer, Isaac Del Toro, who's featuring prominently in this Tour. Today's question, stay 16 is an individual time trial, the discipline that has decided many a tour. Sir Bradley Wiggins, one of the greatest time trials in history, won the 2012 Tour de France and then went on to win Olympic gold in the time trial just days later. What made that feat historically unique? What made that feat historically unique? Both of those guys or that guy ended up on the move. Thank God.
Bradley Wiggins
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
Phantomracing.com do you know the hits? You should.
Spencer Martin
I do know the answer. Okay. Well, don't say it's a bit of
Bradley Wiggins
a. I didn't know the answer until this morning.
Spencer Martin
It's a bit of a lame stat based on what I said earlier.
Bradley Wiggins
I didn't think about that.
Spencer Martin
Yeah. Huh.
Lance Armstrong
I don't know.
George Hincapie
It's gonna have to answer that question.
Bradley Wiggins
What's that?
George Hincapie
Tomorrow he'll have to explain why.
Spencer Martin
Yeah, I will do. Yeah. Tune in tomorrow for the answer people won't and the explanation tonight.
George Hincapie
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
That it?
Spencer Martin
That's it. See you tomorrow.
Lance Armstrong
Bradley, are you wanting to get to the gym?
Spencer Martin
No. Oh, yeah.
Lance Armstrong
I will say last day.
Spencer Martin
We've.
Lance Armstrong
We've had the real pleasure for the last two and a half weeks plus of having Ben Wiggins here. I gotta say one dad. Wonderful kid.
Spencer Martin
Thank you.
Lance Armstrong
I. I loved him the minute I met. I met him years ago in Mallorca.
George Hincapie
Yeah.
Lance Armstrong
And he just gotten better and better. So he's taken off. Gotta go back home and get.
George Hincapie
Go.
Lance Armstrong
Go back to work.
Spencer Martin
I have to say he's going back with an extra suitcase full of stuff.
Lance Armstrong
Studio swag. I got him a Ranko.
Spencer Martin
The element stand that you put all the sachets on.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah, you know, a pair of flip
George Hincapie
flops and a real, real shot of the world championship time.
Spencer Martin
Yeah, he's got world championships in later.
Lance Armstrong
Yeah, we will be watching. Yeah, but nice work, dad. And Ben, good having you around.
George Hincapie
Dog.

Episode: How Far Can Evenepoel Go? | TDF 2026 Stage 16
Date: July 21, 2026
Host: Lance Armstrong
Guests: Sir Bradley Wiggins, George Hincapie, Spencer Martin
In this lively and insightful Stage 16 recap, Lance Armstrong and a rotating panel—Bradley Wiggins, George Hincapie, and Spencer Martin—break down Remco Evenepoel’s stunning back-to-back victories at the 2026 Tour de France. The group debates whether even historic time trialists can match Remco’s dominance, analyzes the implications for the general classification, discusses the technical course and its safety, and uncovers key tactical subplots shaping the final week of the 2026 Tour. The show balances expert cycling analysis, inside stories, spirited debate, and signature banter.
Lance Armstrong:
"If that's your fight, if anti doping is your fight, and this is one of your solutions... The next step from here is the riders are obligated to stay in a local rehab facility, a local jail. We will control them and stare at them 24/7." (26:17)
Bradley Wiggins:
“It's the best I've ever seen Remco, at least in a stage racing.” (04:11)
“People are saying, oh, it's effective to test them at two. It's like, yeah, definitely, but at what cost? And where's the line here?" (27:03)
George Hincapie:
“To be on the podium with your teammates in Paris, that is an amazing feeling. And you’re going to work your ass off to try to get that feeling.” (14:19)
Spencer Martin:
“20 seconds now between them. Talk about a race we're going to have this week…” (12:32)
“You think probably 20% of that whole entire peloton are actually going for it…The rest…just get to the finish line, try to recover...” (22:50)
Night-Time Doping Controls:
The crew express a rare, shared outrage about middle-of-the-night anti-doping control, using analogies (rehab/jail) to question cycling’s excessive policing. (26:17–27:21)
Course Spectator Mayhem:
Lance’s rant about fans crossing at 96km/h: “You cannot have humans…crossing the actual course. That's crazy.” (06:51)
Team UAE’s Dilemma:
Classic tactical dilemma: “If Remco drops Del Toro, does Pogacar go with Remco or stay with Del Toro?” (14:45)
American Stage Win Drought:
The panel laments the “drought” for American stage wins since Sepp Kuss in 2021 (33:10).
Navy Dolphins Tangent:
Voicemail reveals that “Navy dolphins” are real—dolphins trained by the U.S. Navy to hunt mines. “That is badass.” (41:04)
Anecdotes from the Road:
George and Lance recall navigating treacherous conditions and rider risk-taking (“terrified in the rain!”) (39:36–40:39)
This jam-packed THEMOVE episode blends sharp analysis of Remco’s time trial prowess, the evolving GC battle and team strategies, debate on cycling’s unique doping protocols, and insider stories from the Tour’s high-wire environment. As the 2026 Tour heads into its decisive week, expect fireworks—in the race and in the studio.
