The Professor. Spencer Martin. Boy, it's wearing on. We're over. We got a half a week to go or something. We, of course, are talking about stage 17. Alain, tell us where we go. Stage 17. From Chambery to Voiron. From Chambery to Voiron. Incredible. I don't know. Resilience, grit. Jasper Phillipson. I. We did not see that coming. I was thinking about you, Spencer, because this was. You posed the question yesterday, could this be a field sprint day, I think, or a sprint day? This was. It was kind of a hybrid, right? I mean, but I mean, the story of the day is Jasper Phillips and this guy just hanging in there. And I did not see this coming.

[Ben]

No. I think it was far from a field sprint. It was kind of like a mini tour of Flanders. I mean, these guys were coming in crawling on their hands and knees. And Jasper Phillipson spoke about it in his interview how he didn't know what was wrong with him the first part of the Tour. But today he had a really great day and thanked his teammates. Thanks to staff of the team. Just super emotional victory for him and very, very impressive victory. Being a. Like he's a sprinter. Like, he is a hardcore sprinter. But making that breakaway today and having the. The legs for a sprint like that, winning by Three or four bike lengths. It was incredible.

[George]

It shows you the range these guys have. Like even Olaf Coy in third.

[Ben]

Yeah.

[George]

I think the average person is like, why do they even have sprint days? Why don't, why don't they just ride harder and the, they'll drop the sprinters. It's like these guys, people don't understand how versatile they are and how good they are in different types of terrain.

[Ben]

Agreed. Yeah. The sprinters these days, they're just so. Well, they, they can do everything. I mean they can, they can do these 5k climbs just as good as anybody in the world now.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

Yeah, yeah.

[George]

I mean the average Speed today was 47.4 kilometers an hour.

[Ben]

Insane.

[George]

That's fast.

[Lance Armstrong]

It's like a boxing match at times today. Yeah, it was just people were hitting left, right, regrouping different formations. I think it helped with that sprint late on in the stage as well. Yeah, it gave us a bit more of a spectacle.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

Is that what was Phillipson's priority? I mean, it, you certainly, when you listen to his post race interview, he was really stressing the importance of getting that stage win.

[Lance Armstrong]

Very emotional, wasn't he?

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

He was, he was. You know, I think it was weighing on him because the team had committed so much work in so many of those early stages or so many of the logical stages to get win for him. He was really down on himself. You heard him talking about it, you heard him, he said a couple super interesting things. He said that he came into, at least they thought, as the team and his trainers and himself came into the Tour with the best condition of his life. So imagine what that is doing to his mind. Where we, we remember those early sprint stages, he wasn't even close. So he's coming in saying, I've got the legs of my life. And he was just outmatched. I found that surprising. Secondly, and I would just warn him not to do this if I heard it right, he admitted that he was sort of going down this rabbit hole of reading comments on his social media. Now this is yet another public service announcement from Uncle Lance. If you're ever in the Tour de France, don't read the comments ever. And don't read them if you're doing great and don't read them if you suck. But he, yeah, he was relieved. It was, it was cool to see it's. And I mean that is a very, very tough thing that he did today.

[Lance Armstrong]

Tough.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

Obviously tough physically because of the stage, because of the boxing match, but tough mentally to hang in there and to, and to Come through damn well, actually.

[Ben]

And tactically too, it's super exciting to watch. I mean, they're going from playing defense all the way till basically 5k to go, 4k to go. Then all of a sudden they jump on the offense and they got a guy like Van der Poel helping you out. That team rode incredibly well today. I think they had four or five guys in that breakaway and of course there was one guy following. What's his name, Plank. Art was following Mads Peterson in that early move. Kind of flanked him for that sprint. Mads went all in for that sprint, obviously took a lot out of his finishing sprint by doing that and ultimately ended up losing points in the overall lead there for the green jersey.

[George]

I think it was a miscalculation because he bridged up to the breakaway that Ben Wiggins pointed out. Didn't have any green jersey threats in it. But then he gases himself going for the. He's a pulling. He's putting out so much work to get that sprint. But Phillipson just finishes a few positions back and then he's too gas in the final sprint to finish high enough up to limit the damage. He probably just would have been better off following Phillipson all day.

[Ben]

Yeah.

[George]

Yeah.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

Well, we can't talk about the stage of today without talking about Jasper Stibben. I mean, and I think we all have been around the sport enough. Of course, he came through our development team, I don't know, 15 long time ago, one of the good guys. And, and boy, he laid it all out there. I thought he had it.

[George]

I thought he had it.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

And I was, I was, I was getting my, my, my thumbs ready for the dm and it just. Did this tour just catch up to you? I mean, you saw it, I mean, just caked and salt and there was enough motivation and enough guys behind. I mean, it obviously, you know, you get a guy like, like Vanderpoel back there, you can bring back in almost anything. But I, I thought he, I thought he had it and I was, I was cheering loud.

[Ben]

Yeah, this port has no mercy. I mean, Jasper wrote an incredible race. Super aggressive. Well, time attacked, but it's just all the, the different dynamics that happen in the two groups behind them. Like arguably, had they not gotten caught, had they not had four or five guys? With Alpha Scene, Phoenix, Bling, Matthews in the break, there was just too many sprinters back there, too much on the line for these guys that made them all work together. Chase down, as per Steven, but it was a perfect move otherwise.

What's interesting with With Jasper is, you know, he said in his post race thing there that he can't believe it's taken him to stage 17 to win a stage and actually the one who's gone home is the guy who won three stages you've beaten. I thought, you know, we. At one point, we thought it'd be the other way around that Jasper wouldn't make through this tour. So chapeau to him.

Incredibly gutsy ride.

[Lance Armstrong]

Yeah.

I mean, this one's easy to root for as much as Stuyven was a heartbreaker.

But big shout out to Matthew Vanderpoel in that final. The leader was sublime.

get those guys to work.

Well, and Vanderpoel could have attacked over the climb. He had the speed and he held back. Thinking about Phillips and the way they work together is.

It's incredible, you know, and VDP's sacrificing there. I mean, there was a few moments there where you could have thought that Vanderpoek would have won that stage.

Yeah, for sure.

Went all in to try to get that victory is the consummate he's the, like, the best teammate in the world as well. He's a huge factor for all three wins from Malir and still stage 17. Going for the win and unfortunately got caught.

Mine is Phillipson. He's turned, as Lance would say, he's turned chicken shit into chicken salad. People thought Green was over. He gets the stage win. Green is back on. This is exciting stuff.

Yeah. Another way to say that is you go from the doghouse to the penthouse. Um, but, yeah, I've looked. The Tour de France is. When I think about his win today, obviously the Tour de France is, yeah, is the hardest sporting event in the world. This has been an. An incredibly hard one. It's been incredibly hot. So. But all that to say we all know it's hard physically. What he pulled off today, I think was a mental win, like for this guy to get kicked around and have to face his teammates and face the staff day in and day out. Think about the roller coaster again. I said at the top of the show, he was on the record of saying he thought he was coming into the Tour with the best legs of all time. So now he comes in at a high and then all of a sudden just keeps getting kicked and kicked and kicked easily. Could have just slid out and said, I'm going home. You know, I maybe have one stage left. You know, I'm out. And he. And he hung in there. And that's a mental win.

And so for that, I think he is. It proves both parts of the Tour, proves how hard it is physically and also proves how hard it is. And he was a great example today to stay tough mentally and, and come through with the win. So in my move of the day.

Our neighbors in Snowmass watch the show every day. The cyclist, yeah, we see him every day. Helped Ben pump his tires up the other day. But he's from Wisconsin and his accent is off the charts. Ben said all the serial killers from the U.S. like Ted Bundy, you know, the other guy they made a Netflix about, they're all from Wisconsin, apparently.

The funny thing was, the first person that yelled at me, I was going 6 miles an hour. I was with my 12 year old son and I actually stopped, said, I'm going six miles an hour. The. Time trial. I guess he was throwing up, couldn't eat dinner at all. So imagine doing a stage like today without dinner. Bad stomach. Not. That's pretty horrible situation in the sort of.

He looked like he. I mean, he had the. His teammate with him, but when he crossed the finish line it was just like, wow.

[Lance Armstrong]

But it shows you how fragile these riders are as well because he's in the same team of course as Tally Pogacha and you know, God forbid something like that happened to Taday and you know, with such a. Yeah. A relatively small leader, four and a half minutes is quite a big lead. But with something like that structure, it's

all of a sudden wiped out.

[George]

What do we think happened to him? Is it a stomach bug?

[Ben]

Sounds like it. If he was throwing up after the time trial. Yeah. Something affect the stomach. So they got to, like, basically keep them totally separate from the rest of the team, quarantine them. And you can see today they really need them. Like, they're like, you know, send a guy. They send Tim Wellands back for him just to get him to the finish line in the hopes that, you know, he's can be recovered for the next three very hard days.

Yeah.

And the stomach, you know, if it was some other type of illness that. I mean, a lot of times the stomach bug can come and go in 24, 36, 48 hours. You just, just said, dude, you got to start. We'll put Wellens with you. Just finish it within the time cut. And. And then he starts. You know, he's got three or four days. He can think about it.

[Ben]

He's. He's their number three guys like Boucachara Del Toro, Adam Yates on the climbs.

So without him, that's, you know, makes it well.

And Del Toro's very good to be offering up a lot of work, it looks like.

This one's. This is an interesting one. Let's pull up the profile. Zoomed in. Zoom, zoom.

I mean, you look at it and you're like, okay, we can manage this. Now, what is not on this profile, if you're. If you're watching the show, is the total vert for this day is just under 4000. Yet another day just under 4000 meter. If you look at that, that doesn't look like a 4,000 meter day. What that tells me is, well, two things. One, from the start of the race to the finish of the race is obviously a net gain, but that stuff in the second half is just never flat. Like somehow you are accumulating. The final climb is not that tough. 7.1 K at 6.7%. That doesn't stand out. Of course, you've got the Cat one at the start. 11.4 at 5%. That doesn't necessarily stand out, but somewhere along the way, we're getting 13, 000ft, 4, 000 meters of vertical climb.

[Lance Armstrong]

There's virtually no flat. Is there really? None.

[Ben]

That first 20k and we're seeing these massive breakaways go like it's. Yeah, 20, 30, sometimes almost 50 guys getting up the road, which I think will be happening tomorrow as well, which makes it really interesting. Exciting. Who's gonna, you know, be able to.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

What does Matt's Patterson do?

[Ben]

Yeah, exactly.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

That was a question. Yeah, a legit question.

He's got to try to get those points.

Yeah, he's got to try to make that breakaway for sure.

And what Bradley says is causing is it. It's not really a breakaway as you would imagine happening ye olden days. It's just. It's so desperate to get in these moves. It's strung out, it's single file for an hour and a half, and then

So it's not like a controlled breakaway formation. It's just chaos until someone cannot hold the wheel any longer, which is really bad if you're a GC Team.

He actually mentioned in an interview that once they saw the time trial was stage 14, right. Or 15, 16, 16. That they knew that they had to arrive at stage 16 and in top form, like they knew they could win it. So, yeah, arguably, I think maybe we're Going to see the best of Remco in this final week.

The thing I noticed with Remco, I've seen them little clips of him giving the talks in the evenings to the the team, thanking everyone with the champagne is when things are going well for Remco, he looks happy and a happy Remco rides out of himself.

And I've noticed that over the last few years when things aren't quite going his way and you know, he's as we've seen last year when getting off and I think he's coming into his, you know, his own this year. And I think, you know, you have to say that the season he's had up to this point has allowed him to be in this state. Now in the third week and actually saw.

I read some. Somebody sent me some something today which was quite interesting. Will the tour start trying to make it more exciting by adding longer time trials, 60k time trials. So two of them, one in the beginning, one at the end.

[Lance Armstrong]

[Ben]

they would love that.

[Sir Bradley Wiggins]

I have no idea. I would love that. I have no idea who sent you that. But this was three or four days ago. I had the very. I said what would happen if just. You don't have to do it forever. But you went, let's say in 2027, you go back and say, all right, we're going to do two 55 kilometer time trials. Now I understand why they went away from that. They were trying to keep it tighter and animate the mountains. But at some point you have to say, and you could even by the way, throw in a 50 kilometer team time trial where time counts for individual classification. What I'm describing is a throwback, but give us 250k individual TTS. Give us a 55k team time trial that counts for individual GC. You could make the argument that it would animate the mountains actually even more. I mean it's not, we don't know.

[Ben]

But you pointed out tomorrow's sort of a mid mountain stage. It's over 4,000 meters of climbing. Like when is that a mid mountain stage? Like they've added so much climbing elevation that perhaps they start rethinking that. It's a great point.

[Lance Armstrong]

You know, you always get the critics that say, you know, you only want to talk because of the time travels that were in there. You know, imagine if they had no time jobs. You went to one, you know, are

these the comments who say, oh, you

just, it's a general, you know, and, and I had that indrain. Had it. Well, People want to go back and watch in the mountains, you know, if they think that. But bano, he won five Tour de France. He won 20 of his stage wins in the Tour de France for time trials.

Well, what's the implication of Remco not. He just didn't race for months. Does that mean people are just going to stop racing if he does well in this third week?

I don't think so. All right, I'm. Anyways, I, I still remember what would have. Here's a question for you. Like throw. And let's just use this year's race and the condition that you see. And let's just use Poguchar and Remco, throw those two guys with current condition into a throwback tour that has a prologue. So factor that in and then four or five days give the sprinters, you know, sprint stages and then boom, a 55 kilometer time trial. Before we have climbed anything before, there has been a selection on a climb. So pound, you know, pound for pound, apples and apples. What does Remco, and this is again Toddy not being conservative. This is Toddy having to ride the best time trial that he can ride. How much time does Remco, based on these two guys today, how much time does he put on him?

[Lance Armstrong]

Well, based on.

And it's 50 kilometers.

Based on last year's time trial, which I think was 35 kilomet, he took 16 seconds. He took 16 seconds and that was relatively flat. That was after about four or five sprint stages, wasn't it?

Well, he took almost 30 this time throughout.

We haven't got a full picture of, you know, if, if Indraim won the tour in 92, which, where he won, dominated the time trials in that edition of the race. I think he won in Luxembourg by three and a half minutes. If he'd gone to Barcelona, you imagine he would have won the time trial. There was no individual time trial in the Olympics until Atlanta, which was the first one.

There wasn't an individual time trial.

And so. So lots. I think Lance was the only other Tour winner that got a medal in Sydney.
