So the International Monetary Fund just announced California is the fourth largest economy in the world, $4.1 trillion GDP, gross domestic product, larger than any other nation outside the United States, China and Germany. It's a point of pride and it's a point of privilege to represent a state not only with the largest economy in the United States of America, but a state that represents the tent pole of the US Economy in terms of job creation and innovation and entrepreneurialism. We're also the number one manufacturing state in the United States of America and enjoy more two way trade and direct foreign investment than any other state. And so a consequence of these trumpets, tariffs, the consequence of all the uncertainty that we're now seeing all around the world because of these unilateral tariffs that have been imposed by the Trump administration, have an outsized role on the state of California. We're already seeing it significantly at the ports of Long beach and the ports of LA. 40%, 4 0% of the goods movement in the United States of America goes through those ports of entry. Of course, all of us though, are feeling the anxiety, the uncertainty that's marked this moment. You have your 401k, you're seeing your life savings depleted. And we're also the same depletion of trust, the coin of the realm trust around the world. Decades and decades, 80 years of developing relationships with allies around the globe, we're seeing that trust fray in real time. When I started this podcast, I said I wanted to listen directly to you and I also want to talk a little bit to you about my own experience. I started as a small business person. I started right out of college with one part time employee, Pat Kelly, and, and I built a business, a few dozen small businesses. At peak we had over 700 employees. I say that not to impress you, but to impress upon you my passion for entrepreneurialism and an emotional attachment I have to taking those risks in those early days and the risks and uncertainty that come today as those businesses mature. And I imagine there are many people listening that feel the same way. Folks that have put everything on the line, that took that risk, that got that loan, that may even leverage their own home to make a go at it, that may have convinced a family member to come on board, had a great idea and, and just made it happen and it broke through. Or those of you may be struggling with an idea that you thought would be great and you felt you were coming out the other. But all of a sudden all this new uncertainty has painted a picture where you just, you've lost a little step, you've lost a little confidence. And so I'd love to hear directly from you. I'd love to hear how it's impacting you. I'd love to be able to paint a picture where we could put a human face on this conversation. What does it mean? What does it mean to you as a parent? What does it mean to you as a small business person, as a consumer? Are we going to see prices start to skyrock? Have you already seen specific prices increase? If you want to reach out directly, which would be great, you can email us at. This is gavin newsom@iheartradio.com this is Gavin newsom@iheartradio.Com Some of you may want to just reach out directly and I would love to hear your voice. Podcast Summary: "And, I’m Talking To You" | This is Gavin Newsom
Release Date: April 26, 2025
In the episode titled "And, I’m Talking To You," Governor Gavin Newsom engages in a heartfelt discussion addressing California's economic standing, the impacts of recent federal policies, and the shared challenges faced by entrepreneurs and citizens alike. The episode emphasizes open dialogue, inviting listeners to share their personal experiences and concerns as part of a broader community conversation.
Gavin Newsom opens the discussion by highlighting California's significant economic footprint on both a national and global scale. Citing the latest report from the International Monetary Fund, he states:
"California is the fourth largest economy in the world, with a GDP of $4.1 trillion. It's larger than any other nation outside the United States, China, and Germany." [04:10]
He underscores California's role as a "tent pole of the US Economy" through its contributions to job creation, innovation, and entrepreneurial endeavors. Additionally, Newsom points out that California is the leading manufacturing state in the U.S., boasting the highest levels of two-way trade and direct foreign investments.
Transitioning to federal policies, Newsom addresses the ramifications of the Trump administration's unilateral tariffs on California's economy. He elaborates on the tangible effects observed at key ports:
"Unilateral tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have an outsized role on the state of California. We're already seeing significant impacts at the ports of Long Beach and the ports of LA, which account for 40% of goods movement in the United States." [04:45]
He links these tariffs to the broader climate of global uncertainty, noting the resulting anxiety among businesses and consumers alike. The disruption in trade flows and increased costs have not only affected businesses but also eroded trust cultivated over decades with international allies.
Drawing from his personal experience, Newsom shares his journey from a small business owner to a state leader. He recounts:
"I started as a small business person right out of college with one part-time employee, Pat Kelly. I built a business, grew it to a few dozen small businesses, and at its peak, we had over 700 employees." [05:30]
This narrative serves to bridge his understanding and empathy towards current entrepreneurs facing similar uncertainties. He acknowledges the risks involved in starting and scaling a business, including leveraging personal assets and convincing family members to invest emotionally and financially.
Emphasizing the importance of collective dialogue, Newsom invites listeners to share their stories and sentiments. He poses reflective questions to the audience:
To facilitate this exchange, he provides contact options:
"You can email us at thisisgavinnewsom@iheartradio.com or leave a voicemail at 855-6-NEWSOM." [06:10]
Furthermore, Newsom announces an upcoming live town hall meeting, encouraging listeners to tune in and participate in real-time discussions.

By fostering an inclusive environment for dialogue, he underscores the importance of understanding and addressing the collective challenges of the community.
