I was in an absolute war today. I was in a negotiating war where my realtor is in. I. If anybody here is in Nashville, Tennessee, Evan is listening to this. David, you've been a best friend for so long. You guys know how much of a critic I am with people that work for me, work with me, work alongside me. I'm a critic. I want the best out of everybody and I want to bring out the best in everybody and I expect the same in return. And it's when I give someone endorsement, it's not fucking light like it is. It is crystal clear. One of the best humans I've ever met in my life. Most patient, most diligent, most professional character. Class moves in the best interest of her buyer, not her pocketbook. Just. I cannot sing enough praises about Rachel Brewer from Compass in Nashville, Tennessee. Okay. I mean, David, I, I can't say enough good things about her. But there was a point in this negotiation where we are minutes from the wire being closed so that the day that we're supposed to close, it doesn't close. And I said the realtor had the builder on speakerphone and I said, can I, can I please? And I, and she's unbelievable. But I like, I got in and I was able to talk to the builder and there was an item. There are a few items we didn't settle. And we settled it. We worked as a team to get it done with like seconds for the wire to get out. And I guess I just spoiled it right there. The house is closed. We have closed on the house. The wire is sent. There's been moving parts with what had to get done with inspection, the punch list, escrow. The builder was very fair at the end. And man, I'm so excited and so overwhelmed at the same time.

Another shout out for Nashville, Tennessee. We I, you know, we invested in a big restaurant group here called Lion's Share Multi million dollar restaurant and they had the grand opening yesterday and today for founders and I miss both of those because of work. I've slept three hours probably on average the last two nights. Last three nights and three hours per night. And I've had days that started at 4am and are going till about 2am Yesterday was about 2am and we'll get

to maybe a reason of that a little bit later here in 30 Minute Thursdays. But you know, in traditional recap fashion, we're going to start at the top. We're going to start with Katherine. I just got to say, what an episode. Are you getting good feedback from it? What are you hearing from it? What did it feel like in the studio? Give us a little bts.

Tell me about it in the studio. What sucked is we just didn't have enough time. It felt like our jta, we could have sat there for another two hours. I was so pressed on time. But other than that it was so easy. It was so natural. She's so articulate and so smart and so savvy and such a business leader. And I think most people hear like, oh, you run a dog rescue. Cute. And while it's extremely cute and impactful, she's a fucking boss. I mean, she started this thing from her garage in Nashville. She now has over 40 employees. You know what goes into 40 employees? Performance reviews, HR, leadership coaching, organizational structure, retractures, promotions. Like, there is so much going into scaling that fast. And she was amazing. And I will say, like, I knew when I hit send on that that everyone was going to be blown away, that the emails, the DMs, the, the comments, it's been off the charts. It's been absolutely off the charts. So I'm so happy that people got to see all that side of Catherine. We'll do more episodes together. And my question to you, David, is like, you're the curious Canadian. What would you. What did you take away? What curiosities are you still lying with?

David (Curious Canadian) (8:09)

Well, my first takeaway was that it sounded like a normal Trading Secrets episode, which I think was the beauty of it, where you guys really hit on the business side and really an area that we've never covered in 250 plus episodes. So I thought that was fascinating. I mean, like you said, her, how articulate she is was incredible. I mean, I've been. I spent enough time around her to know that she has no, like, she could talk, she could talk to anybody. She can talk to Hole in the Wall. She's, she's very like, personable. But to talk about her passion, her industry and the level that she did in, in the, in one that we haven't really covered before was incredible. The biggest shock that I took away from it was $7 million that she has to raise annually. $7 million that she has to raise annually just to get break even, just to save 1500 dogs. And she says she'll never have a year where she doesn't save more dog. $7 million, Jay. That is an enormous amount of money to fundraise just to be able to keep the lights on and keep saving dogs. That blew me away.

That's a really good point. Right? Like, that's how much they have to raise. And think about this, dude, for someone to donate $50,000, that is a massive amount of money. So the other day she found out she had been working with this foundation for a while, hadn't received anything for a while, and after years and years, they came through with, I Think it was like a 40 or 50,000 donation and we were celebrating. I'm like, that's so incredible. But then when you think about it, like, 50,000. Yeah. Of a million dollar goal, that's only 5%. Then you put to a $7 million goal, like, it is unbelievable. That's so much.

David (Curious Canadian) (9:44)

$50,000 donation a week, and you're not even there at the end of the year for something. It's crazy. So that's. That blew my mind to someone. I have a fundraising background. I do some fundraising for our program. That $7 million. That is, if you can raise $7 million in a year and have to do it year over year, you're gonna get to be able to get a job anywhere in the world. That's. That's really my take on it too. Managing 40 employees and all the things that she does and. And I can't imagine the amount of red tape that she has to go through when it comes to, you know, her. Her job as well. So I thought from that point of view, it was fascinating. I thought from the personal point of view, you could see where the energy from JTA came from when you were talking to her about how your guys's personal life together, because the energy from that matched the energy from jta, which is like, he's back. Like, this guy's back. He's staring eye to eye at someone who gets him fully. He gets her fully. It was really, really great to see my. My qu. My question as a curious Canadian, as I'm listening to this and seeing you in the host seat and interviewing your, you know, your girlfriend is, did you learn anything in the podcast or did you know all that stuff and you're just trying to be a good host and make sure that we hear all the amazing things from wigs or from your relationship, or are you actually learning things live in action while you're. While you're asking her questions?

I'm gonna be honest with you. I don't think in that episode I learned anything new, because she will tell you, I call you the curious Canadian. I'm the question king. I want to know everything. And so all the things that I knew I learned from her in the past and wanted to make sure, like those aha. Moments I've had from learning from her, that I could bring those to light. I think if there's anything I learned from her, I always knew she was good with a mic. I don't. She's done live tv. She does speaking. I Don't know that she's ever done a podcast. Shame on me for not knowing that. But I learned her comfort. Like, I mean, you, David, you've been there, right, man? Oh, yeah, it's. You guys are listening to this and when you see these interviews, right? We are interviewing in a massive studio. Bright lights Everywhere, cameras. There's TVs with our faces on it. 4 HD cameras. As an operator, like, it can be intense. I will tell you. Majority of people that come on the podcast. Majority, not all. When at the end of it, when you give them a hug or we take a picture together, they always go, oh my God, I'm sweating and like their back sweaty. Because our discussions are like intense and power inspiring. We're digging. She was so natural. Cool as a cucumber. That's probably the biggest takeaway I had. How good she is in a position like that.

David (Curious Canadian) (12:20)

Yeah, that's a great point about the BTs behind podcasts. There's chords everywhere. It's. It's intense. It's not comfortable usually in a podcast studio. So that's a. That's a very good point. You guys crushed it. I can't imagine if you have a podcast studio in your house. Hopefully I don't get replaced because you have new co host and it's Catherine. You guys be ripping podcasts left, right and center. Maybe a 20 minute Tuesday on top of 30 minute Thursdays, and then we keep ripping the episodes. But I'm sure the people are going to be wanting more of you guys. And you know what really hit me, Jay? What? I loved my favorite part about the episode.

How amazing is it and what an opportunity that you two get to sit in front of each other and talk about your favorite things about each other. How much you guys love each other, what they appreciate about you, what you appreciate about her. To have the opportunity. I couldn't imagine Ash and I just sitting with mics with cameras on us getting released to the world, being able to be like, hey, I love you because of this. I ride with you because of this. Like, that is something that we don't get to do. Unless you're probably at the end of a thera successful therapy session, talking to a therapist on session 50 out of zero. And you start realizing and be able to pronounce these things. Like we just don't get to do it every day. The fact that you guys got to do it in that setting, it kind of made me jealous. Honestly. Kind of made me jealous.

Jason Tardick (13:31)

Yeah, I think, I think that's a really good observation. I think one of the things that maybe people can take away from that is like you, you too can do that, right? And anyone can do that listening to it. I think maybe try it like maybe at your next dinner, guys, have fun with this, your next dinner date with your husband, your wife, or, or go on like a, go on a date and you're, you're single, like, put the phone down and almost like just get fucking curious, ask these questions. Be like, how do you feel about me right now? Or like, you know, do those things because like it opens up these crazy discussions and yeah, David, I, I love your takeaways from that, man. I love the thinking in that and I love even just that takeaway of like, no, not everyone gets to sit in the studio, phones off, to just be eye to eye and talk about it. But like we can if we choose to do it. You always talk about choices if we choose to do it with the people we love. And you and I, life is busy. We are forced to do it as friends every week. And how close has it brought us together? How beautiful is that? So, you know, I think that's prob. Maybe one of the biggest takeaways from this 30 minute Thursday is for five minutes today, put your phone down, connect with someone and maybe treat it like you're the host of a podcast. Just ask them curious questions where they say that's a really good question. Like you just did to me.

Seven year anniversary for Ashley and I coming up in June. I am going to set up a camera and I'm going to record and we're going to talk about this last year and our marriage. Yes, I'm gonna do that. She's gonna hate it, but I'm gonna do it.

I did that with Mike real quick. I did that with my grammy on her 89th birthday. We were just in Atlanta for her 90th birthday and it's the best because you get all these questions. So the one thing I want to say about the 90th birthday, man, I had so much fun. I was in her senior living center and I was like flirting with all the older ladies and they're flirting with me back and like there are a couple guys that want my grammy because she's hot. She's a 90 year old hot. So I'm like, who are you over here? Frank, you gotta come through me first, buddy. Like I was having the best time. But anyway, yeah, life is short and I think you're right. Let's happy seven years coming up and let's all try and take a little bit away, away from it because, listen, the most time we spend in the world is with our best friends, our family and our, and our partner. And I can say with all certainty, the best thing in my life without, without even a blink of an eye. There's no doubt in my mind, it's Catherine. So let's go.

We're at 14 minutes, 20 seconds here. Let's turn the page away from your personal life, away from Katherine. Let's get into what, 30 minute Thursdays. The premise of it, right? We want to talk about your life. We want to recap some of the guests. We also want to talk about the biggest things in the news right now. The biggest thing in business news, the biggest thing in pop culture news. So where do you want to go, Jason? You want to go business? You want to go.

Jason Tardick (16:38)

Let's go business for a second. Pop culture will hold. There's a lot of action with pop culture. And I'm sure, as per usual, you're the pop culture king. You're in the weeds, you're reading every comment. I haven't had a minute to even get my head up for air to read anything. But I'm sure that there's a lot to talk about. But let's get into a little business because it's impacting every single one of us. Yeah. So my Americans, my Canadians that listen to this, although, I don't know, we were like 106 countries last year. So anybody from any country that's listening to this, quickly, let's break down like a five minute understanding of what's going on and the impacts of this war in Iran. I think first and foremost, in general war Isn't good. Like, I mean, but there is areas of war that is good, right? Like, when you think about, like, World War II, it's a damn good thing the United States got into war so we could win World War II. So sometimes war is a necessity, sometimes it's not. Those are your opinions to make. We don't talk politics here, but what I will talk about is that we are now in a war. And what is happening from an economic standpoint? Well, oil prices are going up. And what happens then? Simplicity. I'm keeping this one on one. When oil prices go up, every thing goes up. And then inflation goes up. You're probably feeling that at the gas pump. It is right now over $4 a gallon on average in the United States. In the last month, we've seen the s and P500 down about 5%. You're seeing the markets are turning because war is not good for the economy, Period. Now, what do we need to know about the. The Strait of Hormuz, which is in Iran, is that about 20% of the world's oil moves through the Strait of Hormuz, which is a very, very small area, and it's controlled by Iran. So they own the oil supply for 20% of the world. Now, we all know we talk about it in all different instances. When supply goes down and demand goes down up, there's less of things, but more people need it. Prices go up. Now, when I say the word oil, what's the first thing you think, David?

David (Curious Canadian) (18:46)

Gas.

Jason Tardick (18:47)

Exactly. And that's what most people think. But think about the things that oil impact. Oil impacts shipping and trucking, plastics, manufacturing, utilities. You hear about heating and cooling just in New York City, the price of people's utilities right now are like, off the charts. You have businesses in New York City saying, like, small businesses over $10,000 for their utilities. It impacts flights, it impacts travel. The list of things that are impacted by oil are so significant, then what happens? Like the Fed, we had the CEO of the Federal Reserve on. We were talking about reducing. Remember when, when President Trump was saying, you got to reduce interest rates, you got to reduce interest rates. And I talked to the CEO of the Fed and we talked about how reducing interest rates actually spikes the economy. And the economy at that time was doing good. We didn't really. You didn't have to force that reduction of interest rates. We're now having a whole different discussion. And that discussion is interest rates going up. Why, though? Why would interest rates go up? Well, when oil. When we have an oil issue, inflation Goes up. We're feeling it at the gas, gas tanks. The way that you control inflation is you do it by putting interest rates up and the cost of money becomes more expensive. Spending slows. Literally you're slowing the economy. Inflation comes down. I say all this because this war impacts every single person listening to this podcast. It impacts your wage growth, it impacts the amount of money that you're going to pay for things. It impacts our outlook for six to 12 months. If you're trying to buy a home right now, fortunately, I got a rate lock in before the war. Interest rates are up almost a percent more, which means the cost of what you can afford goes up, which means that the cost of what you can afford goes down because the price of capital is higher. So that impacts real estate, selling, buying, all the economics into a war that a lot of people majority almost believe we didn't need to insert ourselves to. So what will happen? I don't know. I know that as we're talking about this, I think Trump is speaking to the American public. And I think the sentiment I'm seeing as I'm trying to talk to you, David, is that we're doubling down. Like, I think a lot of the market today is the market's moving very. Like if the market sniffs one bit of the fact that the war might be over, it goes up. And so today there was potential excitement from the market that the war would be, this announcement would be that it's ending and the market went up today. I think what I'm seeing in real time as I'm talking to you is Donald Trump is saying we're going to hit them extremely hard, we're going to hit them harder, and it will be done soon. That escalates war tension, which will decrease the markets, which will impact all of us. That's my little five minute breakdown.

David (Curious Canadian) (21:34)

You know what? That was exactly five minutes. So impressive on your speaking skills. Listen, this is not a topic that we talk about very often, but you always do your best to hit the business side of things. When I'm hearing all that, Jason, I just think, what a time to be alive and not in the best way possible. And I just think when it comes to these things, the public, this normal citizen, the average Joe at home, you'll never know the truth, you'll never know the reasons, you'll never know what the reality of why this is happening in our world is. And it's tough. And I think it all reverts back to what I said at the start of the podcast. Like how are you doing today? Because if you can't focus on those things right in front of your face, if you can't focus on your wife, your kids, your job, your friends, your family, it's a pretty scary time out there. It feels like since COVID it's been really hard to just get by. It feels like we were talking about eggs when Biden was in presidency. Now we're talking about gas, and now we're talking about war, and now we're talking about interest rates and we're talking about the housing market and we're talking about, you know, all these things that are impacting us in ways where it's becoming really hard to get by and it's stressful. And when you combat that with just, you know, really how hard life can be, sometimes it really takes away from the true reason of why we're here, which is to experience things and feel emotions and, and, and love and treat each other with respect and kindness. And it's just a, it's just a crazy time right now. That's my quick take on that whole synopsis.

Jason Tardick (23:02)

Lot of action. That's a lot of action. All we can do is just hold tight because the one thing we know with certainty right now, it doesn't matter if you lean left or you lean right. The one thing that economists and I think almost anyone would agree at this point, some people would say it's a good thing, some people would say it's a negative thing. But our president is very unpredictable. And so because we don't know what's coming, like, we could have this talk today and in two days the war could be solved because he's in the back end working on something else that we don't know about. And that's why you're seeing the markets move so fast. And so what I would tell everybody, no one could predict the future. Hang on tight, be smart with your spending, be aware and know that like the next six to 12 months, the outlook has changed significantly because of the last 14 days. And just as consumers, employers, employees and people in our career, we just have to know it.

David (Curious Canadian) (24:02)

And just when you thought the market wasn't predictable, when politics wasn't predictable, you know what else is a predictable, Jay? Reality tv. You never know what direction reality TV is going to give us. And we have been consumers of reality tv. I want to feel like since the real world days, since Survivor season one. And here we are back to back weeds 30 minute Thursdays. It's almost like we would have scripted this with the two of the biggest pop culture stories hitting the airwaves. As we hit 30 minute Thursdays, we touched a little bit on Taylor, Frankie, Paul. I touched on it more than you did yet last week because of, I don't want to say, not obligations, just proximity to the ABC family and things of that nature. And here we are again this week. I mean, we're talking about probably one of the biggest stories where if you're in front of a screen, you're reading about the Summer House drama, you're reading about Amanda, you're being about West Sierra, Kyle, however you want to spin it, you're hearing about it on all forms. And it's one of those things, Jay, where I feel like Summer House is. It's a big show. I don't think it's the biggest show in the world. And because everyone's talking about it, it's getting people who aren't familiar with the show to be like, hey, I have to get into this. Because everyone's talking about it and they're giving their takes on it and they're a little more unhinged because they're not really in the proximity of. Of knowing a lot of the details, which is neither here nor there or good or bad or whatever. I mean, that's what happens when stories break like this. But it's. It's huge. I mean, I can't believe how huge it is. And I know it's. It's probably put a little stress and strain on you. We had a man on the podcast a couple of weeks ago. What's your overall reaction to what's happening right now?

Jason Tardick (25:40)

Okay, so a lot of moving parts right now. A lot of this is. I said this with Taylor, Frankie, Paul. I used the word layered. Obviously, these are extremely different situations. Don't even dare compare them. The only thing I think you can compare in the situations are that they're both mainstream media everywhere. I would use the word with this one. Extremely layered. Some behind the scenes here, right? Next week, Jesse Solomon's episode is coming out. We filmed Jesse Solomon's episode two months ago. Two months ago on that episode, we talked about Sierra. And I said, I met her at a dinner for Remy Bader the other day for the first time. And you guys are going to hear me say it. I said, she is awesome. Like, I got to hang with her. I sat next to her the whole dinner. I'm like, she is awesome, fun, cool, everything. It's also layered because that's going to come out next week. And it's also layered. Because for years, I've been good, as we talked about on the podcast, with Amanda, good friends with Amanda. I've had deep conversations with Amanda over the last several years about life and friendship. I've had deep discussions with Kyle. I'm friends with both of them and have been for many years. Wes and I have a very good relationship. Every time I see him out, we stop for 5 to 10 minutes, look eye to eye and talk to one another, and have for years now. So there's a layered thing happening here. This is messy. And what I'll say is, I. Here's what I don't like. I completely understand the people that are involved speaking up for what they believe is right and the people that are tied to the situation. Hell yeah. Do your thing. Like, that's your right. One of the things I don't like are the way when people are layered into situations like I am, utilize an opportunity of mainstream media at the expense of the people they know. I don't like when people did it to me who I thought were acquaintances and friends, and I don't like when I see other people do. Doesn't mean that you agree with what has happened or that you support what has happened by. By saying, hey, I'm going to sit this one out. This isn't my place. But that's one thing that I don't like when I'm seeing people who a month ago were begging for conversations with these people, you know, waiting in line, doing anything and everything. When brands are pleading to work with these people, and then the next day they're defaming them intensely, I don't like that. Right. That doesn't mean that I, you know, that's it. Those are my observations. And that is as far as I want to go to speak to this, because it's layered because I really, really care about Kyle. I really, really care about Amanda deeply. I care about both of them. I care about Wes because I've got to know him over several years. And I don't know Sierra that well, but I sat down with her, and I think I have a pretty good gut instinct. And I thought she was just incredible. So that's my long answer to being like, I'm sitting this one out and that's all I'm gonna get. Now, I know you and I have different positions on this, and I'd love to hear yours.

David (Curious Canadian) (29:18)

Yeah, I get to spin a little bit on this, and I'm not gonna spin too deep on it, even though sometimes I want to, because at the end of the day my. It doesn't really matter, but I think we have to stay true to the podcast. And since we wanted to do 30 minute Thursdays before we knew any of the things we would ever talk about, truly any things that we would ever talk about, we decided that said, hey, we're gonna do 30 minute Thursdays to just talk about what's going on in the world. And this is going on in the world. And I think I loved your answer because I think it, it's perfect for where you sit and where you stand in your relationship, these people. And I think if, you know, we didn't do 30 Minute Thursdays, you wouldn't have talked about it at all, which I think is, is your right. Because if people get married and they have kids and live happily after, after, then, you know, good for them for taking the risk even though they knew all the obligations. And at the end of the day, like we talked about it on this 30 minute Thursday already, it's all about your wife. It's all about your kids. It's all about the life you have together. Okay? So I've seen it happen before. Okay, Ari. Ari left Becca and went and. And in on the Bachelorette and then went and got married and had kids. And so everyone's like, okay, he was justified in that decision. Re and Fran from Chicks in the Office. Re had a very public breakup with Hank in her office and went and dated Marty Mush. And now her and Marty Mush are married and they're happy as ever. And everyone's like, okay, that they. She could. She took some serious heat from that, from Dave Portnoy, from Big Cat. So if she marries him, it makes sense if she doesn't. Listen, we talk about it all the time. I talk about all the time. It's choices. The choices that she is making are her choices. She can make those choices. He can make those choices. But life is about choices.

And choices have repercussions.

They have repercussions. And she's seeing them now and she'll see them next week and then she'll see them in her future. From a brand business summer house getting canceled, spin off shows getting canceled. I mean, their lives are attached to this. But again, life is all about choices. She's made her choice. I'm not agreeing, disagreeing. I feel bad for the people involved. I feel bad for Kyle. I feel bad for Sierra. I feel bad for the ripple effect of all these things. So that's just my gonna take they better get married for it to make sense and if they don't, it's choices and she's gonna have to deal with the repercussions of it.

So is West Choices is a probably the best way to wrap this podcast because in life there are so many uncontrollables and has said to me over and over throughout the years of my lowest lows, you got choices, Jason. Right now the pass is in the past. That is the rear view mirror. You have choices to pick your self back up, get back on your feet and take care of yourself. And I would never be where I am today without some of those words from you. So choices it is. It's a great way to wrap. Are we at 30 minutes?
