David Hondel Hondo
I love courses where the golfers get beat up. Like I'm a course guy. Like, I want. I want to see these guys struggle because the guy who ends up winning has gone through an absolute war for four days in a row.
Andre Tranquilo
All right, all right, all right.
Gabe
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first ever episode of the Tranquilo Tea Time podcast. Guys, give it up for the first ever episode of Tranquilo Tea Time podcast. Guys, this is a brand new golf show. Talking not just about the sport, but about the fantastic culture that surrounds it and is created around it every single day. New people in the fold, new golfers in the fray, new products on display all the time. Guys, we have some familiar faces here. We have some new ones. My name is Gabe. You may have seen me lurking around some Tranquilo videos the past few years. You may have seen me on Weekenders Weekly. You may have seen me in a billion other places. But today I'm here in the beautiful state Tranquilo Studio in Miami, Florida, and I'm joined with a beautiful team of people. Guys, please introduce yourself.
David Hondel Hondo
I love it.
Andre Tranquilo
What an intro.
David Hondel Hondo
By the way, you at one point rhymed, I think, Frey, with display. Yeah, you were like, you were spitting.
Gabe
I could do it all day.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah. Well, I am David Hondel Hondo. You see me on Tranquil Sports and Hondo's Blockbuster. And Andre and I are never gonna stop talking about golf. And so, Gabe, we are happy to be here.
Gabe
I love it, man.
Katie Carmen
I'm Katie Carmen. I play golf at the U. And I am now Transitioning kind of into sports media. So it's a little bit about me.
Gabe
That's awesome.
Andre Tranquilo
I definitely wanna tell like your like, fit into all of this obviously, and like how we met. But if you don't know me, I am Andre Tranquilo guy.
Gabe
Who is that?
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
And Gabe, I'm going to do a little like soft intro here as to like, why we're even starting this. For those that don't know, we do a lot of different kind of angles in media. Like Dave's got his Hondo's blockbusters, We have the state Tranquilo show, We got Nikki Spolstra show, Gravis Vasquez in the NBA, Guys being dudes, which is like our sports national show, which we've touched on golf on that show a variety of times. But we know how impactful and how much the game of golf has grown right, over the last couple years that we felt it was important to dedicate a specific show specifically to golf. Right. Golf is on weekly deserves the love and attention and there's so much to talk about, right? From a cultural component, from storytelling to the actual play on. On the course that it justified doing this. Right. And obviously Dave's been a part of this. Gabe, you've been a part of this. And then Katie, we met at Cadillac Championship here in Miami a couple months ago. And honestly, just like we just got to meet, talking, we're both doing our thing in action and we start talking, you're like, hey, I want to get into like sports broadcasting and media and that whole world. And I was like, damn. Well, the time is pretty good because we're thinking about starting this. And yeah. So one just want to say thank you for wanting to be a part of this and dedicating time and being a part of all this.
Katie Carmen
Thank you for having me.
Gabe
Super cool and the best golfer on the show by like a lot of by far, at least double digits. Unfortunately.
David Hondel Hondo
Unfortunately, a low bar to. But like, like, you're way better than us for sure. So.
Gabe
Well, as you guys see, like, yeah, we got a great team here and first episode talking US Open. Oh, man, what a great tournament right away to start. Oh yeah, I love that. My favorite tournament behind the Masters and the Open Championship. So. Yeah. So third favorite. But I still think that, you know, in terms of the history of it, in terms of the fact that it truly is like, as far as the majors go, probably the most open tournament to get into for amateurs around the world, around the country, I think that makes it really cool. And there's been some amazing courses in it. Shinnecock is one of the most legendary in the entire history of the US Open, I think. And, yeah, just. I just want to go around, like, what do you guys think, like, set the tone a little bit, going to the. Into the US Open. What do you think, Andre? It's going to happen.
Andre Tranquilo
I mean, I think you said it right. It's obviously definitely, I think, in most people's top three, obviously. You talked about the Masters, you talk about the Open, even players, I think is. Is up there, but this is just, like, in another category. Right. So I think just from an energy standpoint, the level of competition, obviously in the field, it is a very historic tournament, but also just has a lot in the line. We're already getting to kind of like that midway. Ish point, maybe even more than the midway point this season. So a lot of people are playing for a lot of different things when it comes to this point. So I'm excited just to kind of see the level of competition that's going to be there, the level of difficulty that Shinnecock is going to play. But I think the way this year in specific is going, like, anybody could win, right? We saw Aaron Rye win a big one a couple weeks ago, right? Signature event. Like, to me, it feels like anybody's field when it comes to any of these big tournaments right now. Plus, which I know we're going to talk about, like, that longest day of golf and all these people that qualify, like, is there somebody maybe not winning, but, like, could be in contention late on into the weekend? So to me, just, like, all the elements surrounding leading up to this tournament make it something very special.
Gabe
Yeah, I'll say. I think as far as that goes, like, if you're not aware, the US Open qualifying is the most intense, probably, other than Q school, I would say, in terms of the amount of rounds you have to go to, the amount of multiple stages, and the fact that the final day is 36 holes, whoever comes out of that gets usually only a handful of spots. You know, I think this year there was the least amount of spots ever put up for grabs. I think if I'm correct, there's about 20 less than usual just because of different sponsor exemptions. The tour trying to get, you know, more and more faces into these tournaments as they have. Did you guys see Miles Russell qualify?
Andre Tranquilo
Yes.
David Hondel Hondo
Charlie woods on the bag. Come on.
Gabe
How crazy is that?
Andre Tranquilo
You think Charlie stays on the bag going into the tournament? No way, right?
Gabe
I don't know.
David Hondel Hondo
He has to, like, not that he has to. But I think for, like, Miles, I'd
Katie Carmen
be like, dude, it'd be kind of crazy.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah, it would be nice. It'd be great for, like, TV purposes and all that.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
But also, like, he disqualified with him. I'd be like, like, you know, Charlie, you're kind of not going anywhere. Like, I just have one with you. Like, you know what I mean? But it would be different course, though. Like, for sure. And. And the one thing I love about just the US Open in general. I know we'll talk about Shinnecock and later, but what my favorite thing about the U. S. Open is of how difficult it usually plays. I love courses where the golfers get beat up. Like, I'm a course guy. Like, I want. I want to see these guys struggle because the guy who ends up winning has gone through an absolute war for four days in a row. So I just love the US Open. So I'm very, very excited to keep talking about it. But yes, Charlie Wood on the bag for sure.
Gabe
Yeah. No, the. I thought that was probably Miles Russell fellow left. You gotta say, I appreciate. I appreciate seeing that going.
Andre Tranquilo
He's an FSU guy, right, too. Is that like the. Is that gonna be a teammate?
Gabe
I think so.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
There you go. Yeah, so that's cool.
David Hondel Hondo
I thought it was Auburn.
Gabe
No, no, because he. Him and Charlie at the same college.
David Hondel Hondo
I'm pretty sure.
Gabe
Yeah. But no, I mean, that just goes to show, like, not only the caliber of player he going to be, you know, I think he was like, he played in a tour tournament a couple years ago and did a great job. But yeah, that. That U.S. open qualifying. If you guys. Have you guys ever seen Monday Q info online? Yeah, I'm sure it's his favorite day of the year. I was thinking that to myself, like, yeah, that has got to be his favorite day. Then where. If you guys had to play in a US Open qualifier, what choice. What course would you choose to play it at? What course do you think you'd be able to dominate and be like, I got 36 holes on this course. I got to beat a field of people. Where are you playing?
David Hondel Hondo
That's a good question.
Katie Carmen
I don't have a specific one, but I'm just gonna start by saying, like, nowhere. It cannot be any course in North Carolina. I don't know why, but I cannot play golf in North Carolina. Yeah, it's like the whole state is, like, cursed.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Katie Carmen
So definitely not home.
Andre Tranquilo
Course is Biltmore, right? Yeah, I. I honestly would probably pick Biltmore Too.
Gabe
There's a lot. There's a lot of work that can get done at Biltmore in terms of like, you know, the greens are kind of big, but once you're close to the hole, unless, I mean, well, it'd be a qualifying day, so I'm sure the pins would be terrible. But at the same time, there's like, a lot of places you can get around on that course, and there's some birdie able holes there, too. But at the same time, you can also just pick Palmetto and hope that people get like, their drops in, like the city settings like that.
David Hondel Hondo
Send me to Killian, dude.
Gabe
That's.
David Hondel Hondo
That's.
Gabe
That's your spot. That's qualifying Crandon Bay.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Brutally.
David Hondel Hondo
Honestly, if you want to get a U.S. open test, you can send it to, like, Miccosukee.
Gabe
Yeah, no, they. I don't know. I think the closest course we have to us that could even be close to being US Open ready is probably Seminole. If I had to guess, maybe Panther National.
Katie Carmen
Oh, I love Panther. The back of the shirt.
Gabe
Oh, wow. That's sick.
David Hondel Hondo
Oh, yeah, I've never. I've been dying to play Panther National. Oh, it's so nice when they played
Andre Tranquilo
the Skins Game there.
Katie Carmen
Oh, no, that was.
Gabe
Wow.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah, that was sick.
Gabe
That's cool.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah, that course is ridiculous.
Gabe
No, that's really cool. Yeah, I really wanted to check that out. I mean, obviously you have to get like a very nice house to go play it, but other than that, it
Andre Tranquilo
looks really cool way. There's ways on for sure.
Gabe
Yeah, that is true. You know, sometimes the only way is through just get the house and then get. And play the golf after. But that's.
Andre Tranquilo
That's Justin Thomas's course.
Gabe
No, that's pretty cool.
Andre Tranquilo
Which is sick. Like, all these guys now starting their own courses. Like, their own, like, started Panther National. Yeah, he's the guy behind Panther national,
Gabe
and he designed it. I'm pretty sure he designed it.
Andre Tranquilo
JT Designs course.
Gabe
Oh, wow.
David Hondel Hondo
I did not know that.
Gabe
Yeah, no, they. I think it's nice that. That golfers, like, are starting to get into design and things like that. But speaking of Design. Okay. The U.S. open is a course. I mean. Sorry. Shinnecock Hills is a course that was made back in the 1800s, if I'm correct. I don't know the exact year, but, you know, we're talking a very long time ago. I. I personally am a fan of more historical golf course designs, especially on Long Island. It's now. It's. There's an interesting history of it. But the Lido Golf Course is a course that used to be. It used to be in Long island, like a very historical course as well. And it was actually turned into basically like farmland in World War II because they had to use resources and they ended up using satellite imagery of it to rebuild it out in Sand Valley out in Wisconsin. And I always thought that that's a course that also could one day get like a U.S. open just because of the historical reference of it. And it plays in like, that same long, lynxy style of Shinnecock Hills. Have you ever played on Long island ever?
Katie Carmen
No.
Gabe
Have you ever played, like a link style course? Yeah. How does that really compare to, like, playing, you know, down here in Miami where, you know, it's very much just like, you know, Caribbean style, parkland style golf.
Katie Carmen
I feel like. So I'm from Kentucky. I mean, like, just being down here, like, the grass is like. I feel like the biggest difference, at least for me. Like, you know, you guys know, like, Biltmore is super grainy. Like the Bermuda. It's like totally different. Especially like, short game. I play better in Florida because I'm not the best out of the rough. Like up north, it's like, you have to be kind of strong to hit out of the rough. And I don't really have that. So it's nice. Like, I don't know, you always get like a decent lie, I feel like.
Gabe
So that is true. I'll say out of, like, look, I'm a grass nerd. Like, when it comes to golf, I do really enjoy, like, learning about the different types of grass. But also, to a degree, like, you do need to know that to play well. And I used to play in New York and Florida, so I realized, like, when I was play in New York, I was doing something like, much different than I would down here, which is, you know, for the chipping and the putting is like, where it really matters. So if I had to guess, it's poa Nua. And I think that kind of grass, it's interesting because, you know, to be out in Long island and that kind of, you know, you're not near the ocean, but you also have, like, wind, like strong winters and everything. It has to be a grass that can survive things like snow. And obviously the course is closed. But that type of grass grows so small and thin fine. Like, that's when you get these greens that just get, you know, the ball keeps rolling forever and ever. And I will say, but something kind of cool about a link style Course, like Shinnecock that not many people talk about is. I feel like the viewing is going to be fantastic, like, all around the course.
Andre Tranquilo
Well, the link style is cool because, like, everything's just kind of open, right? You got, like, these little pop bunkers everywhere, but it's just open. It usually favors guys that can just, like, put the ball down the middle of the fairway. Don't necessarily have to be super long. Right. Obviously, there's gonna be certain holes that play to your favor for that, but if you can avoid a lot of these, like, pop bunkers and get up and down. And the putter. The putter, obviously, is huge.
Gabe
Yeah, I remember.
Andre Tranquilo
What was it, the Open a couple years ago when Cam Smith won, and he hit that. He hit. He hit a putt from off the green, had a pop bunker, I think, like, to the left. Yeah, dude. That type of golf I like because, like, you could play whatever type of shot that's, like, good for you.
Gabe
It makes it look creative, you know? You know, ever. Ever since Camp Smith, he won that tournament. And then on tv, after he said, he goes. He's like, yeah, my putting, like, his routine, he doesn't even take a stroke. Practice stroke. I haven't taken a practice stroke since that. I swear. Like, I just, like, will look at it and, like, get my line and kind of feel it out, and then just, like, I'll go from there. And I feel like that mean. That helped me, you know, Obviously, like, many people have many different. That's where we were talking about. How subjective are any of you guys?
David Hondel Hondo
Aim Point people?
Katie Carmen
Oh, my gosh. Don't get me started.
David Hondel Hondo
Aimpoint take. I'm not AimPoint person, but Victor Hovland is.
Katie Carmen
I don't like Aimpoint because they're, like, all up in everyone's line. They're stomping around. Like, I don't. I'm not. I'm anti. Aimpoint.
David Hondel Hondo
I also don't really get it. Maybe it's just how bad of a golfer I am. Like, I don't get how you're like. I don't get the feeling. The ground thing.
Gabe
I don't.
David Hondel Hondo
I don't try it.
Andre Tranquilo
I don't know what I'm feeling.
David Hondel Hondo
I don't know what I'm feeling. I'm like, this feels the same as the last hole. Like, I don't know. I'm going based off purely off looks. So, yeah.
Katie Carmen
So knowing a lot of math and, like. I mean, people are bringing, like. I mean, I don't want to, like, hate because People bring like, levelers out on the green and I'm just like, I don't. That's like a lot going on.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
Gabe
Don't do that around us, guys. No levelers on the ground.
Katie Carmen
I feel like for me, at least anytime, like, I play a tournament, like, I don't really like looking at the yardage book too much for the greens because I just get so, like, technical. There's like so much going on and I'm like. Don't really know what I'm looking at, but I get like, way too. I don't know. I feel like I think about it too much.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah, you over? You over?
Katie Carmen
Yeah, yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Like, more information. Just more information. They have to process. So then you're just taking that into every shot.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
That you hit. Obviously you want to know the line, you know, try to get as much information as you can to, like, inform the decision of, like, how you're going to hit that shot or hit that putt. But I'm the same way. Like, I. I don't want much information in my head. It's going to. Just gonna mess with me.
Katie Carmen
Yeah. I feel like it's like just so much feel, honestly.
Andre Tranquilo
Yes.
David Hondel Hondo
That's how I feel too. Like. Like that's. For me, it's.
Andre Tranquilo
It's.
David Hondel Hondo
It's more fuel than anything. And then, like, I mean, I can kind of read. I feel like I'm decently at reading
Andre Tranquilo
it, but executing is a whole other thing.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah. Putter is one of the few good clubs in my bag.
Gabe
You've been on fire, though, the past few rounds we played. I know.
David Hondel Hondo
Well, like my putter. I've been. I've been. Well, we. When we played the other day at During Bay, it was a one putt strategy. We just kept it. We just kept advancing the.
Andre Tranquilo
We must have made it in what. How many holes did we end up playing?
David Hondel Hondo
We ended up playing six, I think.
Andre Tranquilo
Six holes.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah, six.
Andre Tranquilo
It was three plus four.
David Hondel Hondo
It was three. It was three. It was a three. Three challenge. And three ots.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Plus whatever holes, obviously we played before that.
Gabe
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
But if you count like hole one that, like the first hole that we weren't filming on, we must have hit in that seven, eight holes, like over 100ft inputs.
Gabe
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Because, like, it sounds like we were putting it close.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
We were not. We were nowhere around the green part
Andre Tranquilo
of the day that I hit 10ft off the green.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
And I drained it. And then I'm like, okay. It's a safe par, by the way.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
These Are all the same.
Katie Carmen
Yeah, like you have like the craziest putt for like bogey or double bogey and you make it and then like, like a little like 3 footer for like versions.
David Hondel Hondo
Thinking about it too much. Yes. Yeah, like shaking.
Gabe
No, I, I was, I played recently at Stream Song and you know, that's like, I don't have caddies often when I play, but I had a caddy like all for all the rounds and I. It was almost the same thing where you know, there'd be certain parts where like he would tell me something and I'd be like, okay, perfect. And then he'd go on for another 15 seconds about how it move right here and this little patch right there and he'd be like, so hit it here at 50%. I'm like, bro, you should have just told me just like hit it there and walked away like a little bit. Just a little bit too much.
Andre Tranquilo
I remember when I played at caddy they use those like percentages a lot to give you a gauge on like speed.
Gabe
Yeah, but you don't know what my hundred percent is. You know, I was about to say that you don't know what my.
David Hondel Hondo
I don't even know. I couldn't even control it to say.
Andre Tranquilo
Well, think about it. Told you to hit a putt at 60% versus 70%. Tell me how you're going to be able to tell the only one. It's going to be a little bit harder. But then you know, what's 100% up exactly.
Gabe
I think the only person who could really do that is, is Bryson. Because I don't know if you remember, he. He puts his like a ruler down and he puts to a ruler to know like how many inches back he goes.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
And then he hasn't won a couple years. But I tell you what, if I was playing at Shinnecock, I would tell my caddy, I say, yo, tell me like go inch by inch and tell me how the ball is going to roll. Because the last thing I need is, you know, because what's, what's cool again about like those link style courses that we really if for how our golf is in Miami. We don't really get it. You know, maybe if you go play Miami beach in Normandy and maybe Crandon, you know, Crandon's like in the water, but it's not really on the water. You know, it's kind of like blocked off by the mangroves on most holes. Kind of funky, but the, you know, the wind playing such a big factor on putting, I'm not really used to, but at a course like Shinnecock, and even for me, at Stream Song, just because of, like, the way it's elevated and the flat, it's. It's in that similar vibe. You know, the having wind as a factor in putts is. Is. Is a lot. Is that something you have to do a lot in tournaments in Miami?
Katie Carmen
Oh, definitely. Yeah. Like, I mean, especially, like, with windy conditions. Like, it affects your putts so much, and, like, I guess that's, like, something I never really thought about until, like, a couple years ago, and it makes a really big difference.
Gabe
Wow.
Andre Tranquilo
There's a speed. Like, more speed.
Katie Carmen
Like. Yeah. I mean, like, if I have, like, a left to right. Yeah. And then, like, the wind's going to the right, like, it's gonna make it break even more. Or, like, if it's going left, then I feel like it kind of straightens it out. Like, you just have to, like. I don't know.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
Katie Carmen
Just. It also depends on how fast the greens are, too.
Andre Tranquilo
Right. Which I feel like down here, there's very few courses where the greens are really rolling.
Gabe
I know. It's. It's just.
Andre Tranquilo
It's hard north, and it feels like they're always rolling.
Gabe
You know, I'll tell you, like, right in the dead of winter, Deering Bay and Ocean Reef will get really fine, maybe, like, an 11. But at the same time, it's not even close to, like, what they'll be rolling there. And also the firmness factor, like, the same thing. Like, you know, the greens here, they just keep them really, like, not. I would say, not so firm on a whole basis. Unless you're at, like, you know, a really, like, a nicer course. Other than that, you know, they let. They let the grass grow, like, a little bit more, and then they just keep it really grainy to keep the break. I don't know if you remember back in 2018 at the. When the last time that the USO Open was at Shinnecock and they had to water the green. I forget if it was Saturday or Sunday, but one of the greens got so dry and firm, it couldn't hold the golf ball no matter what. And it was a par 3. They were. They were watering it in between groups, which is pretty. Pretty crazy. So, yeah, that was, like, not a good look for the. For the usga. Is that the same. Is that the same tournament where Phil Mickelson hit the golf ball while I was moving, or is that a different one?
Andre Tranquilo
I don't know.
Gabe
I think I remember that.
David Hondel Hondo
Who won 2018, you know?
Gabe
2018. Yeah, it was Brooks. Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
That's when Brooks was on his tear.
Gabe
And Tommy Fleetwood broke the course record in that tournament too, with a 63, so. Wow. I, I, I know we're going to get into that a little bit more later, but. Yeah, I, I, I think Tommy, you know, a lot of the golfers who are more links link style guys could be have a good shot this, this time and you know, if they take a little bit better care of the greens, you know, which I think they, they will just in the sense of, you know, making sure that they're at, you know, they're hard but not like unfair. Right. You know, so that'll be cool. I'm, I'm really excited. I've played a couple times in Long Island. Have you guys played in New York ever?
Andre Tranquilo
No, no.
Gabe
The grass there is, is, is really, really kind of. I went right to the guys. Like, it grows so long on the sides. Like it's fescue everywhere. Fescue everywhere. And sometimes it's bent grass. I've never played on Poa Anua, I think it's called, but I knew, I know it sounds like some like, Hawaiian grass. Do you have a favorite type of grass to play on, Katie?
Katie Carmen
I mean, I would, I would say Bermuda, honestly.
Gabe
So easy to put on.
Katie Carmen
I know, but like, like home, like, it's bent. And then we have bluegrass. I just like, I don't know. Bluegrass isn't, isn't not my, I mean, it's like, it's gorgeous. Like, don't get me wrong, like, the courses are so much prettier in my opinion. But like, it's true.
David Hondel Hondo
It's, yeah.
Katie Carmen
Totally different. Yeah.
Gabe
What kind of golf do they call it? Like, is that parkland golf? Forest golf? Because ours is like, what do they call ours?
Andre Tranquilo
Caribbean golf.
Gabe
No, I forget what it's like. Yeah, yeah. I think, I think the actual term for most Florida courses is like resort style. Course is what they call it where it's kind of flat out. You know, it's kind of laid out. Like, you know, think of like a Biltmore. Think of even like a Red Tiger. Like, you know, you see both of
David Hondel Hondo
technically are resorts too.
Gabe
Yeah, I was gonna say, you know, but those, you know, they, I mean, even like, you know, Blue Monster, obviously, like, there's a, you know, pga. You know, they at least bumped it up to a PGA ready course. I don't know if they bumped it up to a. I think that I heard the tea time is $900 right now. That's what I heard right away. Maybe in peak might be okay. Yeah, I meant like yeah in season, but at this moment in time. Yeah, I heard, honestly, last I heard it was 750.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah, I don't get up there.
David Hondel Hondo
I've seen it.
Gabe
Yeah, it's, it's pretty gnarly. Is there any course in the world you spend like a thousand dollar tea time on?
David Hondel Hondo
What's the first Augusta?
Gabe
No, no, no. I'm being realistic. I'm being asked the question and I said no, but you know, but you can't.
David Hondel Hondo
If I could.
Gabe
No, but like abandon. No, but there's multiple real life courses with thousand dollar tea times.
David Hondel Hondo
I don't know them.
Gabe
Pebble Beach.
David Hondel Hondo
A thousand bucks.
Gabe
Yeah, man. There's a TPC Sawgrass.
Andre Tranquilo
I mean I wouldn't, I would do TPC Beautiful.
Gabe
I would do TPC Sawgrass. Personally, TBC is like, I want to
Andre Tranquilo
play that course so bad for cheaper than that.
David Hondel Hondo
That's what I'm saying. Like you probably a thousand bucks, like
Andre Tranquilo
in the summertime you could probably. I don't know if it's like 350 or 500, something like that.
Gabe
Yeah, that's what it was.
Andre Tranquilo
That's worth it.
Gabe
Yeah, that's what it was in winter, like two years ago too, you know, so it's only going up more.
Andre Tranquilo
But like if you want to play, you know, February, March at TPC Sawgrass, it's probably going to be.
Gabe
I don't even want to mess with those conditions.
Andre Tranquilo
Right before, right after the, the actual tournament.
David Hondel Hondo
Abandoned Dunes is a good one.
Gabe
Yeah.
Katie Carmen
It is so pretty.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah, yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
It's just funky. It's like that cliffside.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
You're obviously very different than anything we're used to down here, but it's like, it's an experience.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
And to me that's what I would want is like there's got to be some crazy views for sure. The course has just got to offer some sort of element that is just not something you're going to be able to get pretty much anywhere else.
Gabe
True.
Andre Tranquilo
And honestly, if it has those two things, I'll probably pay. And obviously the quality of the course.
David Hondel Hondo
Well, yeah, that's why I also love like golfing in Scottsdale. Like, like we played True north last time and we played. We go Paul. But it's so different than what we're used to here. And the desert golf. I, I, I kind of love desert golf.
Andre Tranquilo
Big ass mountains.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
In the back.
David Hondel Hondo
Exactly, exactly. And like no matter What? Anytime I see a mountain, I'm gonna be like, kind of.
Gabe
Yeah, for sure.
Andre Tranquilo
I played a course in Hawaii. That was dope.
David Hondel Hondo
That's
Andre Tranquilo
Mount Alani. Mount Alani. It's in the big island of Kona. And, bro, ridiculous. Like, Cliffside. Just a straight Pacific Ocean, just, like, right there. And instead of having, like, rough off to the side of the fairways, it's lava rock.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
So, like, if you don't hit the fairway, your ball.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah, your ball melts.
Andre Tranquilo
It enhances the heat on the course.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Like that dark Ross, that's just dried up lava. Molten. That's like.
Gabe
Or I don't even know if it's
Andre Tranquilo
the right word, but no, lava that has dried up and has turned into, like, sediment and just along the sides of the fairways.
Gabe
That's crazy.
Andre Tranquilo
It's insane.
Gabe
I would love to see that.
Andre Tranquilo
No, it's dope because you have, like, that tropical element, obviously, because it's Hawaii, the island. Yeah, but you have that element of, like, there's volcanoes on the same island that you're on and you have the ocean right there. No, it's.
Gabe
That's awesome.
Andre Tranquilo
And I. That one was, like, 300 bucks to play there.
Gabe
That's amazing.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
Gabe
Yeah. I mean, it's. It depends on the locale. You know, like, there's courses in Miami
Andre Tranquilo
that, you know, actually has a ton of golf.
Gabe
Oh, yeah. No, there's amazing golf out here.
Andre Tranquilo
A ton of courses out there.
Gabe
Yeah. There's Maunakea Golf course. I know that. And then there's another one. I forget the name, but it's like. It's kind of more so in the. The. The jungle a little bit. I guess it would be jungle or is it. I don't know if it's jungle.
Andre Tranquilo
It's like Jurassic Park.
Gabe
Yes, that's it. The Jurassic Park.
Andre Tranquilo
It's like. I think Jurassic park was filmed there. Is that.
Gabe
Is that actually what it was?
Andre Tranquilo
Oh, I'm pretty sure.
Gabe
I thought they just call it that. Yeah, I mean, that's cool. Yeah, there's some great golf. I mean, again, Sand Valley out in Wisconsin, which has, like, their courses, and then also has, like, the Lido, which is the Long island one. Like that. That golf over there is, like, completely link style as well. Just like out on the water.
David Hondel Hondo
You.
Gabe
Have you ever played links, like, pure link style course where.
Katie Carmen
Okay, like, I don't want to be judged right now, but I don't. Okay. Like, this sounds really bad because I should know that. I. I definitely have, but I just I not can't name it right now.
Andre Tranquilo
I think I played fair one course in Orlando.
Gabe
Orlando.
David Hondel Hondo
It is the old.
Andre Tranquilo
It's the Royal Saint Cloud Link.
Gabe
Yes. You played there, too?
Andre Tranquilo
20. 20 bucks.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
That's amazing. This was like shout out Orlando Golf.
David Hondel Hondo
By the way, Orlando has some of the best golf in the state.
Gabe
North Shore.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
Orange County National.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
With the Crooked Cat and the other one. Crooked Cat is one of my favorite golf course names of all time. I'm a big fan of that.
David Hondel Hondo
I did and, you know, I'll name drop here. I have played Sandrews, but not the main. Sandra.
Gabe
Not the Old Course has.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah. Not Old Course. They have seven courses on the property.
Gabe
The Old Course, which one did you play?
David Hondel Hondo
Was extremely hard to play, but played the Old Course. Really?
Gabe
Wow.
David Hondel Hondo
If you stay. Because they have packages there that. If we. If I would have gone for that, like, we probably could have done it, right?
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
But, like, we did a day trip to St. Andrews from Eden, bro.
Gabe
Nice.
David Hondel Hondo
And we played the Castle course, which is Castle.
Gabe
Oh, yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
The flag keeps falling off, but the Castle Court. Oh, there it is. Castle Court flag. So I played. It's. It's incredible. It.
Andre Tranquilo
It is.
David Hondel Hondo
I mean, talk about views. Like, the views there. Gorgeous. Windy as hell.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
But the cool thing about playing over there, too, is it's strictly walking. No golf carts there.
Andre Tranquilo
I like walking. I like walking. I mean, you play competitively, so I feel like you're just used to it.
Katie Carmen
It. Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
But no, I don't know. There's something like, about walking that just feels nice.
Gabe
Yeah, I know, though it depends the
David Hondel Hondo
time, though, because, like, I'm not walking now.
Andre Tranquilo
No, it's easy to say that.
Gabe
I'm not walking.
Andre Tranquilo
Like, better weather.
Gabe
Yeah. You see, it snowed at the Old Course, like, two days ago.
Andre Tranquilo
No, I didn't see that.
Gabe
It's covered in snow right now. So when I was in Scott. Yeah. Right now?
Andre Tranquilo
Right now.
Gabe
Right now. It snowed in June. I. I was in Scotland in March, and I. I flew in. I had no sleep for 24 hours. And my buddy was like, you know, I live two hours from the Old Course, Right. I was like, are you serious? Like, I was so out of it. So we drove there, and I was like, all right, pull over here. I gotta use the bathroom before we get to the Old Course. So we go into some random golf course. I'm like, yo. And I go to the guy, and I'm like, yo. I go to the guy in the pro shop. I'm like, yo, where's your. Where's your bathroom? He's like, go in the back. And I'm like, wait, wait. I was like, is there any chance you got a tee time open out there? No shot. He's like, yeah, actually, you can go out there right now if you want. No, at the Strathrium course. At the Strathrium course. Beautiful course. So I went eight over through nine in a puffer jacket, hitting off like a little plastic mat that for every shot. And yeah, I went to the old course after and I was supposed to play Glen Eagles the next day. And it snowed. Just snowed overnight. Like, it just out of nowhere. And I was playing golf the day before. So. Yeah, the old course covered in snow right now. Crazy. But yeah. Yeah. And obviously the complete opposite of what we got going down here. It's. Honestly, we've had a pretty mild climate so far, which is nice. But I'll tell you what, I'll tell you what. I. I would love to see some of these golfers try and play like a tournament. The pros play a tournament in like the middle of July in Miami. See how they'd fare as it was
Andre Tranquilo
like they were already complaining about it being down here in. When was it?
Gabe
May. Yeah.
Katie Carmen
They were not.
Gabe
Yeah, first week.
Katie Carmen
Too hot. Like, majority of them, like. I mean, they all like, live in Jupiter.
David Hondel Hondo
Exactly.
Katie Carmen
They all, like, go up north for the summer because it's too hot. I. I like, kind of love the heat. Like, I love playing in the heat. I don't know why.
David Hondel Hondo
So you prefer playing in heat than cold?
Katie Carmen
Obviously not snow, but, like, no, Like, I. This was like a rule, like, when I did junior golf. Like, I would not play like, any tournaments under 50 because I just would play like, terrible.
David Hondel Hondo
See, that's like my preferred. I'd rather. I'd rather play in cold degrees
Katie Carmen
with the wind. It's like 10 colder.
David Hondel Hondo
The wind is definitely. Yeah, a big. But like, for me, like, I. When it's so hot, like, I just, like, I lose my mind out there. Like, I'm like, dying. But yeah, I don't know. I like. I'm also like a. Like a complete sign. Like, I like, get hot really quick. So, like, I would really prefer the cold.
Gabe
Yeah, fair point.
David Hondel Hondo
Honestly, like a bear.
Gabe
Dude, look. No, no, no, look, if you know, you know, it gets bad, it's like dog days of summer golf. But at the same time, that's the time where nobody's out there. So, like, sure, you can sometimes catch me on like a nice, like one PMT time.
Andre Tranquilo
Are you playing 37.
David Hondel Hondo
Six.
Andre Tranquilo
I have.
Gabe
And I tell you what, I bring two pairs of socks and two polos. I once saw a man bring two full outfits to his golf course just for 18. That boy at 9 walked out of the pro shop, like, in a whole other outfit. Said, who's this? He played the same, though. Same. Same player. Didn't do the right thing for him. Right. Another side note. Are you, like, a. Look good. Like. Like, look good, play good. Like, do you have to, like.
Katie Carmen
Yeah, I feel that I have to, like. I don't know what it is, but, like, if I feel like I can't just, like, pull up to the course, like, in random. I don't know. I have to, like, feel put together. I feel like it makes a difference. I don't know. And then a weird thing is, like, I have to play in sun sleeves. Like, I.
David Hondel Hondo
We've got some sleeves for you.
Gabe
Eagle sleeve, shout out. Eagle sleeve, shout out. Eagle sleeve, shout out. Rory.
Katie Carmen
No, it's like, I really don't care about the sun as much because I'm, like, so bad about wearing sun sunscreen. But I feel like it makes such a big difference.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Katie Carmen
Because, like, I don't know, I feel like my arms are, like, tense if I don't wear them.
David Hondel Hondo
That's the thing. Like, I'm so bad about wearing sunscreen that I just get off the course and I'm just, like, burnt to a crisp.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah, but I gave my Antonio for the Columbus tournament. I regret it. I had, like, the. I mean, it's not as bad now, but I had a terrible.
David Hondel Hondo
No. My pharmacy.
Gabe
As far as golf.
Andre Tranquilo
And it was one of those days. It was supposed to rain. It didn't end up raining. So somehow I'm not gonna need sunscreen today. It'll be like an overcast, rainy day. There's not a cloud in the sky. It was, like, 90 degrees. I just got completely annihilated. Yeah.
Gabe
No, that was. I get. Every day. Every time I play, I get roasted.
Andre Tranquilo
It was bad.
Gabe
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
I've never seen someone put as much sunscreen as Gabe.
Gabe
It doesn't work, dude. No matter how much I put. It's literally not enough.
David Hondel Hondo
We were in Palm Springs, and I think every 15 minutes, Gabe was, like, in the corner. Like, wow, dude.
Gabe
I went through an entire. I was on the. I was on my friend's boat in the air show, and I went through a whole bottle of spray, and I literally look like a lobster after that.
David Hondel Hondo
I've never seen someone put so much sunscreen.
Gabe
Well, whatever. Man, I'm gonna be living to 85,
Andre Tranquilo
and I have melanoma guy from Benchwarmers.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Gabe
I'm like, you ever seen, you ever seen Logan?
Andre Tranquilo
No.
Gabe
What's the name? What's the name of the guy?
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah. When he steps under the sun.
Gabe
Yeah, he, like, if the sun hits him, he, like, catches Shout out. Stephen Merchant. That's the actor. I don't. I love you, Steve. If you watch this ever. All right, guys.
David Hondel Hondo
Stephen Merchant. I love that.
Gabe
Let's go back to Shinnecock Hills. All right. I, I, I know I made a little joke before about the US Open third favorite, but I will say I do truly believe that when it comes down to, like, the, the majors, like, the US Open stands alone to me in one certain regard, and that is they have some of the best pairings I've ever seen. They ro. Do pairings of players on the. For the craziest reasons. Do you guys remember the controversy a few years ago about the big guys pairing? Do you remember that?
Andre Tranquilo
No.
Gabe
They put, like, Shane Lowry in a group with. I forget the, I forget who it was, but it was like, two, two others, like, three fat golfers in one group. And they got so mad, and it was a ginormous controversy. Really? Did they ever do.
Andre Tranquilo
It's a great, like, has there ever been a Rory Bryson, like, Thursday, Friday pairing?
Gabe
I'm not sure. I mean, they were together in the
Andre Tranquilo
Masters because that was just based off position.
Gabe
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah. But they usually like Rory. They'll usually put Rory with, like, like J.T. or somebody. Like, I don't think they've ever done the, the Bryson one, which is, obviously, would be the biggest fireworks.
Andre Tranquilo
I mean, but at this point, it's not like what it was a couple years ago.
David Hondel Hondo
I know, but it's still there because even, like, at the Master and even pga, they, you know, they're kind of talking about, like, the rivalry or whatever. Obviously, it. Rory wins the Masters again. Bryson hasn't won since. Did he? Did he. No, he didn't win the year. So he won the US Open two years ago, Right?
Andre Tranquilo
Definitely not last year.
Gabe
No, I think.
David Hondel Hondo
Was it two years ago?
Gabe
I think so.
David Hondel Hondo
Right.
Gabe
Two or three.
David Hondel Hondo
There's the one that Rory missed the putt on. 18. And then Bryson hits the bunker shot.
Katie Carmen
Shot.
David Hondel Hondo
I think that's US Open.
Gabe
I'm like, yeah, the bunker shot.
David Hondel Hondo
I'm pretty sure it's like, 20, 24.
Gabe
Yeah. Two years ago. What course was that again? At Piners behind her.
David Hondel Hondo
So my thing with the US Open. Why I love it. Love it. Like, outside of the fact that I mentioned, like, it beats up these golfers. Like, it is like, like that 2018 season one over. Like, that is awesome. Like, that is the. Like, I, of course, I still love to see these guys get birdies, like, because. But there's so many tournaments that it's a birdie fest. Like, this is like the biggest tournament that is like, these guys are struggling and struggling and struggling. That is why I like it. It also opens the door for anyone because anybody can play terrible. And also, you know, you just have to play not terrible and you're kind of in it. Right. So I love this one. This is my second favorite of the, the majors, so I'm excited.
Gabe
And is it your. Is either your favorite?
Andre Tranquilo
I wouldn't say favorite. I mean, it's hard to beat Augusta.
Gabe
I know.
David Hondel Hondo
That's like a level of its own.
Gabe
Yeah, that is true.
Andre Tranquilo
True.
Gabe
Either of you guys like the players more than the US Open? I feel like that's a hot take for someone.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Gabe
Yeah.
Katie Carmen
I would say I'd go, okay, favorite major would probably be Masters. And then I'd say the Open.
Gabe
Yeah, the same. I love the Open. I'm a big fan.
David Hondel Hondo
The Open's awesome. The only thing with I. I do love the Open, but like, I just love how tough this, these court. Like this tournament is and the Open, like us golf sickos, like, we'll wake up at three in the morning and watch. But like, that's why I love it. But like also like sometimes like.
Gabe
Oh, no. I know, I know.
Andre Tranquilo
It's great. Saturday morning you wake up, but you
David Hondel Hondo
already missed out the group. You're waking up at like 9am on, on.
Andre Tranquilo
On the like Saturdays and Sundays, like the leaders tee off.
Gabe
Yeah, that is true.
David Hondel Hondo
You can catch it. Four in the morning.
Gabe
No, no, you can catch them. Well, that's kind of what I. I mean, honestly, the thing I like the most about the Open is that it gives all these players like the opportunity to play the courses. Like the link style courses, like, because like the golf, like historical golf and like all the courses up in the England, Scotland and Ireland, where the Ryder cup is this year, if I'm correct. So all that is cool to me. So I think it's really great that, that Shinnecock and you know, to be fair, Pinehurst as well, was like a very much link style course. But I mean, Shinnecock though, you know, you're talking, of course created, you know, at a time when Lynx was really like mainly style of golf. And, you know, American golf is so different in terms of how it's set up and how it's played and how it's designed. And you don't really see, you know, know, other than. I know it's not the third time you said it, but other than the Lido, you know, just another great New York Long island course. Literally a course that if it was still around today, would probably be in the same level of Shinnecock, which I, which I think is why I find it so, so fascinating, you know, that it's almost like an alternate history of like, where the same thing could have happened to Shinnecock, you know, but they were able to keep it around. You know, to be fair, Shinnecock was made a couple years prior to the Lido. But yeah, that is, I mean, you know, when you, when you talk Long island courses, I mean, you have, have probably Shinnecock Golf Links of America. And I would say, damn, the third one, maybe Beth Page Black is like the three most iconic Long island golf courses. I, I would, I would, I would
Andre Tranquilo
say that's Ryder Cup.
Gabe
That's. So that was my first time seeing it. But it was so weird because to get black as like a tournament ready course for spectators, they had like, the parking lot was next to the green course, so they built basically like walkways over the red and the green just to get to the black course area. And it was, it was so wild to see that. So I had really had no idea what I was looking at. But then once you get to Bethpage Black and you see it's all framed out and it's, you know, the rolling hills, you know, it's a lot more elevation than a Shinnecock. You know, if I'm correct, you know, Shinnecock is just more of that wide open.
David Hondel Hondo
Right.
Gabe
But yeah, the, the Long island golf is a beautiful, beautiful form of golf, for sure. Yeah, I would say so Long Island. No, I'm from here. I've just spent time there.
David Hondel Hondo
No one ever. He's kind of like a New York. Nobody thinks a lot about New York golf. Four years.
Gabe
New York golf is great. You know, I. There's some fantastic courses. Mansion Ridge is another course that is like linksy, but it's half links, and then the other half is parkland style golf. So kind of foresty golf.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
Gabe
And then I played one other course on Long island that was complete links on the water and everything. And that was, that was tough, man. You know, like, the wind is such a factor. And the craziest part is that it's like. Like it's gusts and swells. So, like, you know, you'll get. You'll be getting like wind thrown in your face, but the flag stick isn't moving. And then it's like. But then up here it's there and it's not down here. And there's no trees. You know, in Florida we have so many trees and. Which is also why I think, you know, the Biltmore, you know, it's kind of cool. It almost plays in that link style, you know, to a degree.
Andre Tranquilo
Fish. Yeah.
Gabe
Did you. You play tournaments there? Is that just where you practice?
Katie Carmen
So our facilities there will, like, usually practice there and then qualify, but then we also, like, mainly qualified to ral. And then we had a home tournament, the Hurricane Invitational. Every year it's usually like November. This year we went to the Bahamas instead. Oh. So. Yeah.
Gabe
Where'd you play?
Katie Carmen
I don't remember.
Gabe
Oh, shoot. It wasn't too memorable.
Katie Carmen
No, I'm like, so I cannot remember any first name about it. So.
Andre Tranquilo
Bahamas golf. I want to play so bad. What's that? That private one One over there?
Gabe
Abaco Club.
Andre Tranquilo
Abaco Club.
Gabe
Yeah, yeah, that one is. That one is amazing.
Andre Tranquilo
Tigers.
Gabe
No, I think Tigers is Albany, where they play the. The Hero World Challenge.
Andre Tranquilo
Yes, yes, That's.
Gabe
That is Albany.
David Hondel Hondo
Two time winner.
Gabe
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Facts. That's.
Andre Tranquilo
That's.
David Hondel Hondo
They used to call him the resort. The resort course king.
Gabe
Because Mayakova as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dude, he. We gotta get him to come play it at, like. Well, he actually played terrible at Doral. No, Hovland.
David Hondel Hondo
We don't talk about. So sour.
Gabe
Speaking of moving on, are we taking Hovland? Are we taking Hovland this, this, this week?
David Hondel Hondo
I've never. Not for the U.S. hovland.
Andre Tranquilo
Yes.
David Hondel Hondo
Victor Hovland will be winning the U.S. open. And I say that with two things. One, the U.S. open is the. The. The major that is most fit to him. He is.
Andre Tranquilo
Here we go.
David Hondel Hondo
He is.
Andre Tranquilo
Here we go.
David Hondel Hondo
Who was in the final, you know, pairing with JJ Spawn last year? Who's somebody who's been in the top 10 in the US Open, like three times? It is a tournament built for Victor Hovland. It is because where he thrives is difficult. Course he likes. No, no.
Katie Carmen
Difficult.
Gabe
In terms of the rough.
David Hondel Hondo
He's one of the best players of the rough. He's got one of the best. He's one of the best iron players on tour. His biggest weakness, ironically, is. Not ironically, but kind of as big sweets around is putting with which is going to be needed at this tournament. But if you keep sticking them close, we don't have to worry about putting as much. All right. But no, the US Open is usually one that fits him. I will always take Victor Hovland. I take him every week. And, and yeah, I've got other picks too, but I'll start with Victor Hovland. Winner.
Gabe
All right. Fair. Honestly, I, I, if you ask me, I would say Tommy. I think he, I mean not even I, I didn't even know well this
Andre Tranquilo
like RBC's this Week. But previous week he played well. He was up there in contention.
David Hondel Hondo
I need to see him do it. I just, I, I, I still don't buy him really. I love Tom.
Gabe
He's been playing well.
David Hondel Hondo
He won, he won the FedEx.
Andre Tranquilo
He won the FedEx cup championship. What do you mean?
David Hondel Hondo
The tournament with 30 people in it. I mean I get it. He's great.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah, but he also won before. No, that was, no, that was the first win.
Gabe
But he plays well.
Andre Tranquilo
Sick bell.
Katie Carmen
Sick.
David Hondel Hondo
First champion as well.
Andre Tranquilo
But I get it.
David Hondel Hondo
Incredible first win and he's been playing like amazing. He's always been good and this is I think 2018. He was, came in second. Yeah, he's playing well right now. I just need to see him do it. I need to see him perform on a Sunday. I love Tommy. I, I would love for Tommy to win. I just need to see it. You know what I mean? Like so until he proves it, I can't pick Tommy.
Andre Tranquilo
It could be this weekend proving more consistently. Yeah, but this a win on the tour.
David Hondel Hondo
I know, but when you're, you're, when you're there.
Andre Tranquilo
Maybe, maybe he just wants to finish top five his who season. Yeah. And they come and win in the FedEx cup championship and just won, you know, 20 mil.
Gabe
I mean seriously though, like look how
Andre Tranquilo
maybe 30 mil this year.
Gabe
Actually I think they keep doing that now.
Andre Tranquilo
Dude, look, smart play by Tommy.
David Hondel Hondo
Honestly play to play in the torches, dude.
Gabe
But seriously, he plays so well at this course. Yeah, it's like he plays so well. I like all these link style courses, you know, like this is really like his kind of style. And I, and I would have picked him. I don't even know that he is, he basically is a course record. Right? Right. He has a course record, dude. 63@ Shinnecock 2018.
David Hondel Hondo
Hard to replicate. Some are saying.
Gabe
I know. Hard to replicate. I'm going to get a 62 soon, dude. I don't know. We may have to put a little wager on this. Tommy versus Fleetwood, straight up.
David Hondel Hondo
Tommy versus Fleetwood.
Gabe
That's.
David Hondel Hondo
It's Tommy versus Fleetwood on Sunday.
Gabe
Loki. Victor versus Hovland, too.
David Hondel Hondo
Dude, talk about that game, man.
Gabe
Kind of the same. Hey, and you know how I feel about Victor Hovland. We are on record owning.
David Hondel Hondo
You're supposed to feel my side.
Gabe
I, I, I. I love Victor, and I would love for him to do well, but, like, I kind of just feel like Tommy's gonna do better, dude.
David Hondel Hondo
Well, we'll have to. We'll have to. All right, well, let's. Let's make a challenge right now.
Gabe
Okay?
David Hondel Hondo
Tommy versus Victor. Finishing position.
Gabe
Okay. Winner buys the other an entire rack of ribs from Flanagan's Deal. I'm getting that rack, Tommy.
David Hondel Hondo
You got me, dog.
Andre Tranquilo
He has a Flanny's gift card.
Gabe
Gift cards up for grabs. Gift cards up for grabs. Yeah, Tommy, gift.
David Hondel Hondo
I got you with two of them.
Andre Tranquilo
Don'.
Gabe
Just don't. Don't look at the camera again.
David Hondel Hondo
Honestly, that's more like contact. I think my content's gonna fall out mid performing.
Gabe
Look, I'll say this. My dark horse for. For every major the last two, two and a half years has been Russell Henley. I just think one day he's gonna win, and when he does, I will have, like, at least $5 on him. Doing so well.
David Hondel Hondo
He just won that long ago, right? He won.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Gabe
I forget what it was, but he won. Yeah, Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
I forgot what it was, too, but.
Gabe
Shout out, Russell.
Katie Carmen
Us.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah, we love you so.
Gabe
Yeah, I know, but he's a. He's a good golfer. I like him because he's steady. Like, beyond anything. He's steady, dude. Like, he's just kind of always around. Like, he's always there, and he's always pretty much playing the same game just to different degrees of like, of. Of goodness, basically. Like, seriously, it looks like very similar. He keeps it steady. And if you're able to hang around enough in a major, honestly, especially US Open, I feel like anything can happen just because the conditions alone.
Katie Carmen
Right.
Gabe
You know, and, and, like, the ways that the ball can get trapped. It's like, you know, the way when I think of Shinnecock, I think of Oakmont in that way, which I think is also sick course. But. Yeah. Who's your pick, Katie? Who's your pick? This week?
Katie Carmen
Let me think. This week?
Gabe
Or, sorry, the U.S. open week.
Katie Carmen
Yeah, I'm actually pulling for Scotty. Like, I hope. Okay, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Gabe
But he has enough wins now. No, I honestly have no, like, personal Quarrel with him?
Andre Tranquilo
No, me either, but.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah, me either. Yeah. But my thing with Scotty is that like more cur. Like in terms of like the joke side. Like, I. I am curious to see how he shows up because obviously he's still having a great year in the sense of like, I mean, how many runner ups does he has at this point?
Gabe
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
In the FedEx Cups, he's still number
David Hondel Hondo
one in the world, but he's also like, clearly not playing that well. Like, it's kind of a weird thing because he'll have one day that he. He's awful and then Sunday he's a madman. Like, it's like he. How good he is, but he's backdoring everything. So how good is he actually playing right now? He's struggling, like, for his level of standard. Like, he is struggling and you can see him. He's, you know, he's getting more frustrated out there. Like, so if he's going to win the US Open, he is going to have to kind of contain himself a little bit or kind of find something because as good as he's playing and of course he is the best player in the world right now, he is like, still like, like kind of not playing as well as he usually is.
Andre Tranquilo
So like, if you look how Scotty has won over the course of the last, you know, when he went through this dominant run of what, two, three years, basically he just went out 66, 68, 65, 66. And like, it was just consistent. Right?
David Hondel Hondo
Not consistent anymore.
Andre Tranquilo
That's the problem. He's having that one round where he's shooting a 73, you know.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
And it's like he's now just playing catch up with the rest of the field, where he was never day one leader for day two, but he's there obviously floating top five. He's just lingering. And then on Sunday you're like, Scotty's four back.
Gabe
I know he's always dog.
Andre Tranquilo
He's gonna go shoot a 66 and he's gonna go win this tournament. And that's just what he does. He just like, he puts so much pressure on you because he's just hitting consistent shots. And I think it's that lack of like one round or one stretch of hold that he just doesn't have that same consistency that he's used to. And that ultimately's costume because he's had a couple runner ups that he probably can win those tournaments if also the rest of the field is also not like maybe playing well, I think. And I think that's what's different about this year, too. People are playing well this year. Like, there is a lot of talent on the tour right now. And I think that also plays a factor, especially if you mix it, too. Like, Scotty's not playing Scotty of two years ago. Plus, the field's playing that much better.
Gabe
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
This guy's gonna win less.
David Hondel Hondo
Listen, I just want to never hear the Scotty Tiger comparisons. No, there's a lot of it.
Andre Tranquilo
Did you see that graphic the other day?
Gabe
Forever, bro. Did you see that?
Andre Tranquilo
Of, like, how many majors, like, Most majors before 30 or something like that. And it was like. Or I forget what the graphic was.
Katie Carmen
I gotta.
Andre Tranquilo
I'll find it. But basically, it was like, tiger in his 30s.
David Hondel Hondo
Yes.
Andre Tranquilo
I saw everybody then. Tigers in his, like, 25, like, in his 20s.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Had more than everybody.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Then it was like. Like, Scotty, Rory, and Tiger in his,
David Hondel Hondo
like, 35, had a bunch of excuses for him.
Andre Tranquilo
Like, like, specific.
Gabe
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
I'll tell you.
Katie Carmen
Right.
Andre Tranquilo
Like, area. Like, they were more majors than, like, everybody.
Gabe
That's just. I mean, look, the one thing I. I'll say to Scotty is, like, I think you. You said it right where it's like, he's just played such good golf, consistent golf, but he never was that guy who had, like, the fire of someone like Tiger, even someone like.
Andre Tranquilo
Like.
Gabe
Like, dude, I want to even say, as much as I'm like, whatever, like, Rory dude. Like, he can. He can fire himself up and get mad and play well. Scotty gets mad and plays like. But, you know, Tiger gets mad and plays great.
Andre Tranquilo
I don't think you can, like, fault a guy for their style of play.
Gabe
No, no. But. No, I'm not faulting him, but I'm saying, like, that's why he just has never been that guy. You know, he's the guy who was, like, crying before winning the Masters, which is. I completely understand. I probably would, too, bro. No, Cap, I'd be petrified.
Andre Tranquilo
Are you serious? Serious?
David Hondel Hondo
Holy.
Gabe
Sorry. That'd be scary as hell. But you know, Tiger, you know, you hear about, like, you know. You know, people who, like, kick their feet up the day before, and then they go out and then they shoot the 63. Like, you know, Scotty, like, he obviously is, approached the game in a very different way also. Talking about how, you know, he feels, like, fulfilled about things off the game. Like, we see what Tiger was, like.
Andre Tranquilo
It was obsessed.
Gabe
Tiger. Tiger had, you know, off the game. He didn't know what the hell to do, you know, which is unfortunate. But, and it's just, you know, so I feel like for, for Scotty to not, you know, have his heart in it as much as some of these other people. When the game isn't there, the heart isn't there to back it up. He's not able to will his way around a golf course. Like, like, you know, and obviously Tigers like the comparison for that regard. But there are many other golfers who can do that. Well, I, Brooks Koepka can do it this week, man. Adam Scott can do it, by the way. Adam Scott can get angry.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah.
Gabe
And play well.
Andre Tranquilo
Well, Brooks's got the chip on his shoulder. We saw him at Cadillac, remember? And he was there at the green as a alternate practice all day, dude, from like 12pm or maybe even earlier, like 10am until 6pm just grinding and he was not in the field and he ended up not making the field at all crazy. So, you know, he's putting in the work. You know, he's putting in the time and, and energy. He's won here before and he wants to showcase like that he belongs on the tour again after everything that happened. And he's been welcomed back by the fans. He's been welcomed back by the players.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
So I think there's a moment for him to maybe he doesn't win, but I, I, I could see him contending this week. And then another guy that I also like, he hasn't really been playing well, but just it's like a feeling type thing. Obviously we're always going to go with my boy say he think.
Gabe
Is that what you say?
Andre Tranquilo
That's not who.
Gabe
Okay, okay, Okay.
Andre Tranquilo
I see David, look at me over here waiting for me to say, by the way, we're recording this on a Thursday, the Thursday before US Open win, and Mr. Sahita Gal is in the lead. I'm just saying it's normal. Normal Thursday things for Sahit, though, blow it up.
David Hondel Hondo
At some point he just forgets there's three more days.
Andre Tranquilo
Oh, God damn it. All right.
Katie Carmen
What about like an underdog?
Andre Tranquilo
Well, he's not really an underdog.
Katie Carmen
Well, no, but like, who, who in the field do you feel like is an underdog that you would be pulling for?
Andre Tranquilo
Oh, that's a good question. I was going to say that I like Xander Shafley. This, this for US Open. I feel like, look, he's a guy that is favorable. He's, he's long, he's accurate when the putter's rolling. He can be deadly. He just kind of like been injured. Injured for a little Bit. So he's hasn't played a ton of golf, but he's another guy that, like, knows how to win. Plays really well when it comes to majors. I don't know what his odds will be because he hasn't really been playing too much, but I like him. But, like, real. Real underdog. Oh, man. Man. I don't know. I don't know.
Gabe
I gotta. I have to make sure he's in the field. But Justin Rose, Justin Austin. I'll. I'll. I'll bring him out.
Andre Tranquilo
I got you an underdog.
Katie Carmen
Okay.
Andre Tranquilo
Alex Fitzpatrick.
Katie Carmen
Okay.
Gabe
Right in New Orleans.
Andre Tranquilo
He's got, I think, two top 10 finishes. I think a top seven or eight finish. He played really well again this past week. I. I feel like he's. This is his style of golf.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
Yeah, I know. Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
If he keeps, like, if the moment's not too big for him, which is proven not to. He's played in multiple signature events already. He's played against the best. Right. This course. Like, he's used to that link style course. Like, why not just continue the hot streak and see? Maybe it's Alex versus Matt on Sunday. Can you imagine? Imagine.
Gabe
That would be so good, actually. See, like, the U.S. open would do something like, pay. I have to. I'm gonna check if the pairings have been released, but, like, they might. Yeah, they're gonna, like, pair.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
The Monday of when they.
Gabe
When they release it. We'll take a look. The they. Every year, they always do something where they pair. Like, they'll pair people who. Like three people from, like, the same country or three people whose names are similar and things like that. It's like it's a thing forever. Like, they always do, like, unique pairings for the first two days, which is. Yeah. And they did that one time. The fat, fat people pairing. I searched it up. It was Kevin Stadler, this guy like George De Jong. And then it was Shane. Shane. And, yeah, that was, like, a really big controversy for John.
Andre Tranquilo
Rom's another one I think we got to keep an eye on.
David Hondel Hondo
Ram is on my list.
Gabe
I'm trying to find Smith playing in this tourney.
David Hondel Hondo
I think so.
Katie Carmen
Yeah. Yeah, he should.
Andre Tranquilo
He got the new coach, Cadillac. And then he played really well that week. Maybe that's the turnaround.
Gabe
No, K. Smith. Kim Smith. Smith. Kev Smith, Live player. You said Cadillac.
Andre Tranquilo
So he was at cad, was he not?
David Hondel Hondo
No, no, not Cadillac.
Andre Tranquilo
Pga. Pga.
Gabe
My bad. Okay. That's why I was.
Katie Carmen
Okay.
Gabe
Okay.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
David Hondel Hondo
But Rom, for me, is not an underdog. But the for me, the person to keep an eye on. I think Rom's playing well.
Gabe
I like that.
David Hondel Hondo
I think Rom, again, he was right. In contention for PGA Championship. I think it's. Again, talk about somebody. Obviously, I was saying Victor Hovland. The US Open is also built for a player like Rom. Like, the. Like, he can grind out. You know, he. He is somebody who doesn't matter how. It's like, he's going to grind it out.
Andre Tranquilo
He's.
David Hondel Hondo
He can get angry, too. It's an angry golfer. But he could.
Andre Tranquilo
He's very animated.
David Hondel Hondo
He can.
Gabe
He.
David Hondel Hondo
He's gonna play well this weekend. I'm pretty. I'm pretty confident in that.
Gabe
So. Okay. I'm gonna lock my pick in with Tommy right now saying it to the world.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah. Like, if you pick 100.
Gabe
Yeah. Okay. I like that.
David Hondel Hondo
At this point, Victor Holland, unfortunately, is considered an underdog at this point. Seven thousand or whatever. But I will take. I'll take. I'll take Victor Holland if I pick one. If I pick two, Victor Hoffman. John Rom.
Gabe
Okay.
Andre Tranquilo
I'm gonna go top dog. I'm gonna go John Rom.
Gabe
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
As well.
Gabe
Wow. I like that.
Andre Tranquilo
Yeah. And such a good dog. I'm gonna go Alex Fitzy.
Gabe
Yeah. That's a sick pick, actually.
Andre Tranquilo
Also, by the way, two other names. More live. Guys, guys, watch out for Waco.
Gabe
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
And had it.
David Hondel Hondo
Haddon was. Was on my last.
Andre Tranquilo
These majors. So Damn.
David Hondel Hondo
Well, he'll have, like, maybe one hole
Andre Tranquilo
towards the end that kind of like, takes him out of it. But that guy's always in contention.
David Hondel Hondo
Always contention. Always New father alert, too, so.
Gabe
Oh, they always play well. They always play well. Boy.
Andre Tranquilo
It's always inevitable.
Gabe
You're a newborn.
David Hondel Hondo
Boom.
Andre Tranquilo
They win.
Gabe
It's crazy. That's facts.
Katie Carmen
I feel like Scotty for me was kind of a generic ass answer. I don't really.
Andre Tranquilo
Like.
Katie Carmen
I don't.
David Hondel Hondo
It's true.
Andre Tranquilo
Because he's always the favorite, but.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Katie Carmen
I. I don't know. For the top one. I don't. But I would say, like, a really cool underdog would be Neil Shipley.
Gabe
I literally was thinking that maybe Neil
David Hondel Hondo
Shiver would be crazy.
Katie Carmen
Nuts. That's.
Gabe
That's a sick. I was thinking.
Katie Carmen
Yeah. Yeah.
Gabe
Didn't he win the Amateur? The. The US Amateur, Right?
Katie Carmen
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Gabe
That's cool. All right.
Andre Tranquilo
A Youngin would be cool to win.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
I mean. Yeah. Imagine.
David Hondel Hondo
I mean, with Charlie woods on the bag. What's up?
Andre Tranquilo
Should be in it, too.
Katie Carmen
He's a long.
David Hondel Hondo
Yeah.
Gabe
A lot of future.
Katie Carmen
Yeah.
Andre Tranquilo
Max. The ball.
Gabe
Sick. Yeah. There's a lot of sick talent, young talent out there now. Now. Yeah, man. It's going to be a great US Open any way you spin it. Yeah, I'm very excited. I think that. I think it's going to be just a great one, conditions wise. I hope it's on point and fieldwise. It's going to be sick. And I think we got some great picks in there, guys. And I think that that was a very fantastic way to finish off this fantastic podcast, guys. Thank you all for being here. The squad wraps on an upbeat note—anticipating high drama at Shinnecock thanks to tough conditions, a wide-open field, and the course’s “war of attrition” aspect. They highlight their picks (Victor, Tommy, Rahm, Scottie), put friendly wagers on the line, and endorse some value underdogs (Fitzpatrick, Henley, Shipley). The panel leaves golf and bet fans with “confirmos” and a promise to break down all the US Open action next episode—with Flanagan’s ribs (and bragging rights) on the line.
