A
Welcome back, Trap Talk listeners. I'm your host, Zach Danini. We are live at the 2025 Grand American. Just got done with the SOS doubles I believe today. And I've got my co host Richard Marshall Jr. Building 106 where we get it done.
B
That's right.
A
And we've got the one and only not so slow Charnigo. The man, the myth, the legend, your squad mate also on a hell of a doubles run. Right now he's banging him up. Welcome to season three of Trap Talk.
B
Brought to you by Craigoff, the choice of champions.
A
All right, folks, we got to take a quick second and give a huge shout out to our title sponsor, Craig Off. Me and Ricky. Bullshit. And we both love them. Yeah.
B
Best gun in the industry. I shoot them, I sell them. Nothing better. Folks. Get yourself a Craig off, your scores will increase.
A
Yeah, I mean Ricky's got hundreds and hundreds of hundreds with his. I mean, I've got a few hundreds but. But I'm always working to get a little bit better and they definitely help me, that's for sure. So on top of that, we also got to thank winning. I'm wearing the shirt today. Love this shirt. If you're down at the grand, pick one up.
B
Yeah, winning, like I said, hundreds and, and hundreds with my winning stock. You know, get a hold of Bobby, Luke, Bill, get an appointment set up. They will make you a better shooter.
C
With that winning stock.
A
Of course. Yeah, the grand's the great place to do it. Give them a call, get on their book. It's worth your time.
B
Just remember, winners shoot winnings.
A
With that being said, let's get back to the show.
C
We fun.
A
We were having fun today.
B
He just, just broke your 100. 100, 100, 100 straight and doubles. Say that five times.
C
At the Indiana state shoot on Sunday. Last week on Sunday.
B
Did you win the shoot off?
C
Yes, I did.
A
And now we're at 104.
C
Yes.
A
So if we get to did the 100 today, the 100 yesterday, 100 on Thursday. Thursday and the hundred on Wednesday. Every day.
B
400 straight.
A
400 straight. Plus the other one. That's 500. Is my maths right?
B
I don't know.
A
It's close. I try.
C
Even our financial advisor can get this math right.
A
I couldn't do no rounding on these numbers though. That's the problem. So the reason we're here today is because we want to talk about the back fence shootout. We've got a lot of great information that we want to share with everyone today as far as the Success. The reports, the amount of shooters, and on top of that, John did a great job of recording a lot of the information. So we're going to be splicing a lot of that in. So this is going to be one of those episodes where you really ought to run to YouTube and give it a watch because you're going to be able to see all the fun there instead of just hearing me and Ricky and.
C
And Zach's pretty face too.
A
Yeah, I mean, it's beautiful. It's not, it's not a face for radio, it's a face for tv.
C
We'll ask Herby about that.
B
Yeah, Herbie disagrees with me, but you know, he let him. I believe Herbie.
C
Herbie lit him up yesterday. He said he's got a face built for radio.
B
Grand squad. My Florida squad. Damn it. He came shout out to Herbie, that'll get you a free hat.
A
He came out of left field with that, out of nowhere. And I said, I was shocked. And, and I was like, Herbie, you're such a soft spoken guy. It's usually, it's from Joey, it's from Ricky, it's from Rich. And he just, he's like, I just wanted to get in the fight for once.
B
He didn't get in the fight.
A
You a bab. All right, all right, that's good to go. So back on track, tell us your opinion on how Ohio's back fence shoot off went this year.
C
I think it went awesome. We, last year we had 263 entrants in it. This year I had goals to getting to 3. 350 would have been awesome. 400 I thought would have been absolutely off the charts. And we hit 509, which I could not believe.
B
You heard that right? So 509.
C
509 entrance. Yep. We almost doubled it. We had over $77,000 in payouts that we had for this shoot. It's the biggest cash payout shoot in the country and it's a, a shoot that pays down through. It wasn't geared towards the top guys. The top guy gets paid, but it gets paid down through as well. So it was really awesome to see how many people came and participated in this event. I was just blown out of the water. I appreciate everybody coming out. I want to thank everybody for their support, their kind words. I've heard nothing but great things about this. We had awesome sponsors and that's what made this event happen and what made it great. We had Beretta that gave the guns. We had gun and trophy insurance. That gave the leather bags for us. We had Winchester White flyer. They put the money in for the cookout. We cooked 10 pork butts and fed everybody on the ground. Oh, yeah. Travis Hutchins.
A
Really, really good.
C
When you got a big guy in suspenders cooking all night long, you cannot go wrong.
B
We got to taste this the day before with some smash burgers.
C
Oh, yeah.
B
I tell you what.
C
Yep.
B
If we can get white flower Winchester to donate for smash burgers.
A
Like a good smash burger.
B
That was the night you were laying in the chair. I was relaxing.
C
We had some bourbon. We just had a good. Even. We had a lot of work ahead of us for putting the chute on. So we kind of took it easy the night before, got ready for it, and we had a great time. But again, the sponsors are what makes it great. I mean, mid state precious metals, they gave us those 5 ounce of silver shells, and we gave those away. We called it the consolation purse. So anybody who didn't win something there was in for a chance to win these things. So you came in, you put your 200 bucks up. You didn't hit the Lewis. You didn't hit a top score. We drew names, and there were five lucky people that got these shotgun shells to give them a souvenir something. I mean, it's worth money. It covered their entry fee and then some.
B
Anybody did win? Yeah. I was the first one to be drawn for that, by the way, which. And I was like, you know what? No, I'm not accepted. So we donated. And it was the. The gentleman that. It was actually the lowest score. Yep. And I said, you know what? If he doesn't get drawn? That's where it's going. Yep.
C
And he did that.
B
Yeah.
C
And I appreciate you doing that. That was awesome. And some people don't know that's what happened, but it really was. Ricky's name was the first one drawn. He's like, no, can't do this.
B
Zach's like, well, if it had been my name.
A
I just said, I even knew the fix was in on this deal.
C
I said, hey, hey.
A
This don't look right, folks. No donate that silver.
B
Here's the one thing. You know, we had a lot of people. I had people call me after the shoot. Students of mine that actually came out that wouldn't normally come to Ohio. They were like, hey, we want to be a part of this. And that was, you know, the great thing about this event, that it's something new. It's fun. You don't have to break a hundred straight. I Mean, it does help.
C
It would pay. It would have been worth 15,000.
B
It was over 15,000 for a loaner, which we had 398s, which was Ryan Glow, Jack Knauss and Ian Lawrence.
C
Yep.
B
And I know Jack missed late for his 98, so he could have won the, the prize. And then those three went out and shot off for the 50.
A
$100.
C
Yeah.
B
For the winner take all first. And that's the only purse that actually, you know, is just for the top score.
A
Correct. Doesn't split. You have to win the shoot off.
C
Winner take off.
B
And Ryan broke a long 25.
C
And to me, the most memorable thing about the whole shoot and what I thought was a coolest. Ryan is a hell of a shot. He's won plenty of things at the grand one rings and everything. To watch him shoot his last two targets, his knees were literally shaking.
A
The single shooter, both of us won, by the way.
B
Yeah.
A
So there you go.
C
But I reached over, I hit Ricky on the shoulder. I'm like, look at his knees. And his knees were just shaking. When you got that kind of cash on the line, the pressure's on the line and you know, it's right there. It was just really cool to have these guys up in front of everybody. The top shooters of the day showing off in front of everybody. And we had hundreds of people there for the shoot off. There were more people at the shoot off there than what we have here at the Grand American. And that's what I wanted with this. I want the family environment, I want the camaraderie. I wanted people hanging around. I want people there and enjoying it and seeing the show at the end of it.
B
And look at if, if we could get this done here at Sparta, at the Grand American. An event like that to just promote shooting, you know, 27 yard, like, because some people get back on the 27 yard, they never shot an event that way. Or, you know, maybe they've shot some practice. But an event, you know, I know it's non registered because it's gonna have to be. Yep. But I mean it, it shows that, hey, I can shoot here. Because we had a few of them guys that came. I remember the older gentleman, he was, I think he was like 75, 80. He came up, he said, I've never shot on the 27. I broke a 78 today. And I think he won 600 bucks or something.
A
He's happy. Oh, yeah.
C
And I don't. I had at least 25 people come up to me, say, I've never shot from the 27 yard line. This is just a cool event. I'm excited to go out here and see what I can do, compete with everybody else. There's a chance at all these great prizes and I appreciate you putting this on and that. That's what it was about. It's not catering to the top guys. And O, the 27 yard guys are going to mop everybody up. No, that's not what this was geared toward in any way.
B
You know, no one made a ton of money except for the shooters off this team.
C
Correct.
A
Correct.
B
And that's because you.
C
You donated money back to the Ohio State Foundation. Foundation, which went to the scholarship funds.
B
Scholarship fund and stuff. And that's what you know, because I know there's there. I get calls from people about, hey, we'd like to do a backbed shootout. And I said, well, this is Joe Charnico's deal, so if you want to do it, you can get in touch with Joey. You know, the problem is, is if you do so many of them, you kind of dilute or possibly can for people trying it at other places.
C
Yeah.
B
So, you know, we'll see how it goes. It's up to Joey. But, you know, we're doing one in Vegas.
C
Yep.
B
Coming up in. In October, and that's gonna be big. Yeah.
A
And I think the biggest thing is, is the first time was just testing the waters.
C
Exactly.
A
We really didn't know what it was going to do the first time. I was happy. I was happy to see what it did the first time, but I had no idea that it was going to blow to what it did. I mean, you think about it, it was over a hundred thousand dollars worth of entries in a day in one event. And there's not many events where you could say, okay, $100,000 was brought in. Now, I think it covers two things that people talk a lot about. They say, well, trap shooters won't pay or they won't play options, or they won't do this. And that the reality is that's one of the biggest events in the country now. Over 500 entries in one event. They'll do it. Now, I don't think they'll do it every time, but I think if you set up an event and say, hey, this is how it is and this is how it works, and you've spread the money across the board so that not just the top guys are getting in it, but everybody feels like they have an opportunity and a chance.
C
Exactly.
A
That's the secret.
C
And it's a specialty Thing. It's a novelty thing. I mean, like you said, I don't want to have these. Every state shoot or every weekend we have one of these. It's something that I want to do four to five times a year max. Right now is what I'm looking at. It's got to be kind of regional. We've got the Ohio State shoot. We're going to do Nevada. I'd like to get the grand one day. I'm going to have a meeting later this week with the guys and present my program that I have for them. If we can find a couple other events where it works out, Kentucky would be a great place to have it. All those guys love shooting for money, but there's not enough time in the day. They don't have enough traps. There's not enough.
A
They're turning people away to do it.
C
Exactly.
B
Wisconsin, I think, you know, is a possibility. Possibility because it's in July.
C
Yep.
B
Same thing with Kentucky, but with Kentucky there less traps. And it is tough. Yeah.
C
And it's one of those things too, where the shooters are the ones who put all the money into this event and we give it all back. It's not. We're not keeping all the money on it or anything like that. So all the money comes in and we give it back to the shooters. It's part of the purses, plus the prizes and all the prizes. So the other thing is we've got a lot of sponsors that do a lot for us on this event. And we can't ask those sponsors to give, give, give all the time they've done. Way more, gone above. And Bey, we appreciate everything that they've done and they're what make the event a great event. So we appreciate everything they do for that. But we can't dilute this down either. I don't. I'm.
B
No, it'd be tough for. I know, you know, Brett is the. The gun sponsor of it. You know, Brian Buzzy, which, you know, Brian's a friend to all of us.
A
And.
B
And, you know, we appreciate, you know, him doing that for the event. But yeah, you can't. You know, I think this where we have a694 and then a. A400.
C
400 the multi target. And then we've got a really nice A300 that we're going to do out in Vegas out there that's all engraved and stuff. A really nice gun.
B
And it's tough to do. You know, you do that five times, you know, that's a lot of money.
C
Exactly.
B
You get exposure out of it. Yes, but that's something that is up to the sponsors.
A
Hey, trap talk listeners, we got to take a real quick break and we got to thank Ron Prescott from mid state precious metals for everything they do for the trap shooting community coast to coast for all your gold and silver buying needs. And on top of that new announcement, they're a sponsor of the 126 grand.
B
Finally he said it right, folks. Grand American. Yeah, Ron is a great guy. He's a sponsor of the back fence shootout at Nevada state shoot and Ohio state shoot. And also we got our gold for our trap talk event at Nevada state shoot and the 77th annual Nevada State shoot. They bought all theirs from it. 680 ounces of silver to be exact. Folks, you're missing out if you're not there.
A
That's a lot of silver. And honestly, if you're not buying from Ron, you're probably overpaying. So whether you're buying it for your gun clubs or your shoots or for your personal use, you got to give them a try because they're big supporters of the trap shooting nation. So it's awesome. With that being said, let's get back to the show. All right, trap talk listeners, we got to take a quick break and we got to welcome a new sponsor to the show. RGS bore stripper. It's a great product. Ricky, tell them how they can find it.
B
Go to their website, rgsguncleaner.com you can get the 18 ounce bottle, free shipping, 28 ounce bottle and you get the 2 ounces travel bottle and it's free shipping also. Or just get the little two ounce bottle for travel.
A
Yeah, they sent me some of this product and I used it on my krakov choke tubes the other day and it got the plastic out like in a minute and it was super cool and super good. So if you like cleaning your gun, you like eliminating plastic, and you like shiny bores, give them a try. For sure. Thank you so much for supporting the show.
B
Yeah, we'd really like to thank John weber, the owner, for the support. He's doing an awesome job.
A
Yeah, we really want to thank John. We appreciate the support of the show. Anybody that supports trap talk, you guys need to support them and get this stuff because it's awesome. And with that, let's get back to the show.
C
Exactly.
A
Yeah. I mean, you can only get so much from. From so many people and how many times and. And I love what you're doing, but what else I loved about it was that everybody stayed for the shoot off. So normally you have events and even here it's like, okay, you have a shoot off for a grand championship. And how many people are really watching other than maybe the clay target night? I mean the clay target night.
C
Everybody's leaving gone by then. Yeah, the prelim handicaps bigger.
A
Yeah, that's the big one.
B
I just got done shooting off for a place in the craig off handicap, you know, because craig offs are our title sponsor. You know, thanks craig off for that shameless plug. But seriously, it's one of those things is there's not a lot of people down there.
A
No, no, there never is because there's nothing in for them. So. Yeah, I mean, I think where, where you did it right was you're like, okay, everybody, you can come. And not only are you going to be a part of it to be in the shoot off, but we're gonna have door prices. We're gonna give away that silver, we're gonna give away this gold. We're gonna give away whatever it is that we give away. For people that haven't won as enjoy the environment. They're drinking beer, they're. They're having fun and they're watching everybody have a fun time. And I really like the way that you did the 10 birds for the gun but then went to the missing out on the backs because you know, the biggest thing was this was such a big event now. Yes, we ran a lot later than last. The year before 1138 for the last.
B
Shoot off for the last batch. I was the one doing it. Zach was asleep in the corner.
C
It was. It got to be a little bit much. So. So it's. It's also a work in progress. So we're learning things too. So next year I'm going to have two tables set up. I'm going to have a table set up for the gun check in. I'm going to have a table up for the lewis class check in. Because the lewis classes, I don't know. Yeah, we got the bags. A lot of people may not know, but we shoot off for 200 pack shamrock leather bags at gun and trophy with style pouches. These things are decked out. They're awesome.
B
500.
C
Yeah, they're.
B
You could throw your. You could throw your.
A
Your tools in it, your glasses in it, a sandwich. I mean, you could be in. You could go on the road for a week with that bag. I mean. Yeah, it's a big deal.
C
They're top notch.
A
It's a nice bag. It's nicer than any bag ever, ever wanted it. At an ATA shooter, usually they don't come with all those side pouches and all that. And that one's maxed out.
C
It's maxed out and it's something cool because it goes to Lewis class winners, which isn't your typical winners at these shoots. So. So that's the really cool thing that I thought was great about it. We're trying to give back to the guys that are coming out promoting the sport and just being there.
B
And that's one of the greatest things. You know, gun and trophy insurance is one of my sponsors, also personal sponsors and Trap Talk. But the best thing about it is, you know, Larry and Cole Cushman are great people.
A
They're very nice.
B
You know, I remember Larry took a cleric for me years ago, but I remember years ago when Tyler was just starting to shoot. Tyler shot with Larry a few times and Larry didn't know. And then Larry's like, that's my boys. Oh, you know, great. But they stepped up.
C
Yeah.
B
And said, hey, Joey, we'll do this. And he's even said, hey, you know what? If you guys need some extra bags, you do another Lewis class. I'm in.
A
Yeah, yeah, I think. I think it's cool that people jumped up and said, hey, we're gonna support you and we're gonna follow your dream and your vision. And you know what I want to talk about a little bit too, is some of the other metrics. I know we talked about how many entries came into the event, but have you noticed any influence on the other events in Ohio, based on the back fence? I mean, is there any numbers there, people that came and stayed for the weekend because of it, or do you have any of that data yet?
C
Yeah, and I've looked at it and it was huge. So the first year, last year when we had the event, we had 263 shooters who shot the event. We were up 197 entries in Friday's handicap prior to that event. And then we were also up on entries over the weekend as well. I think on Friday was the only day that we were actually up above the last year. This year we were up another 154 entries over the year prior. So that's 350 entries over two years ago. And they were coming for this shoot. What I also looked at, we had over 100 entries more into the doubles event, which tells me those are the people who are coming to shoot everything. And they're going to shoot both events during the day. And the back fence and maybe stay for the weekend. So we are growing people that are going to come to the shoot for this event but also shoot the other events. And that's. I'm not anti ATA in any way, shape or form. I love the ata. I think it's a great thing. I just, I think we need something more fun, something different and just have something else out there. And that's all that I'm looking to do with this.
A
Exactly.
B
It's that extra event.
C
It.
B
It's something that, you know, okay, maybe I didn't break, you know, a hundred or a 99 or like this year.
A
98, but I broke 9178 and got paid well.
B
Yeah, well, the last two years the low scores have been paid pretty well.
C
Yeah. So I think it was 6 or 800 bucks to the 70, 74s.
A
I'd have to look at the numbers or whatever.
C
Yeah, yeah.
B
Because I mean, you know, you and I sat in there and you know, with Greg Pink shout out to sos.
C
Yeah. They did an awesome job cashiering.
B
Yeah. You know, and we were all just kind of like. But it is a late night and people don't realize what it takes to run.
A
It took a lot of effort. But I think that there needs to be a second to talk about that, that data because a lot of people will, will say, oh, well, it's not helping the sport or oh, it's not helping. It's not helping. It's not helping the state shoot. So why would we want to be involved? Well, the reality is is there might not be anything at that state shoot that's pulling these people in. And now you have this event that's pulling them in for the three days and then they're deciding they want to shoot those other events because they want to practice more or they're there already. I mean once you're there, then okay, I'm going to shoot some more.
B
And.
A
And I seen that there's a lot of people, this is their first time and they just boom.
B
I had over 20 students that I taught throughout the year that said they were going to come to the back that shoot out of the hot state shoot. And they all came plus more just for that. And over around 20 of them stayed and shot the all around.
C
Yep.
B
You know, I know a few of them didn't shoot the doubles because they really didn't shoot. But majority of them shot the all around too. So that gains in numbers, which. That's helping the ata.
C
Exactly.
A
The point factor, we want you're into the points.
B
Me and Joey, we're into the money.
C
It's nice to have something to shoot.
A
For, but they're into the point. So there's a lot of people that are into that and they want to know why. And they're like, well, talk to me about growing our shoots. That's what they're trying to do and.
B
That'S what we're doing here at Trap Talk is we're trying to grow trap shooting.
C
Exactly. You get things out there. Like this event. It would have been tough for me to advertise this event. Get it out there. So Trap Talk was huge for being able to get it out there, get the viewers to hear about it and explain it to them so they understand it. The first year, there were a lot of people who didn't exactly understand how the event worked. And then they came and they watched and there were a hundred people standing behind the set. Oh, I didn't realize how this was going to work.
B
This is really cool.
C
Next year I'm shooting in this. And they came and they brought their.
A
Friends and they're like, okay, now the episode, like laid it out, showed what we're doing.
B
So that's why we partnered with Joey on this to help promote it. Because we're about promoting shooting. And this is a no brainer. It's like, hey, folks, you know, yeah, it is 200. But if you're shooting trap to come and join events, you get food for you, your family, everybody, you know, everybody's coming.
C
Yeah, if you're on the grounds, come eat. It was for everyone.
B
I mean, it's, it's just. And it's a great event that you could be a part of. And then also, oh, hey, I got drawn. Yeah, I broke a 92 and two's the number drawn. So you get a shoot off for a couple guns.
C
Yep. Yeah, there's. There's so many opportunities. I mean, all of us buy raffle tickets for a hundred dollars and all we get is a piece of paper. We never hear anything more about it. This, it's $200, but you get to shoot for 100 targets from the 27. New experience for a lot of people that don't normally get to do that. You get a chance at the guns, you get a chance at the bags, you get a chance at the money, you get a chance at the silver. There's so many things that we have options for the Lewis too, I think.
B
I know it was late that night because it was over after minute, you know.
C
Yeah, we were up Late and a.
B
Late night beer to, you know, it was a good deal. And with John and Greg. And then we went to bed. Zach was already asleep, but I had.
A
To get my rest for the singles the next day. And I broke those things.
B
Yeah, but you didn't win that shoot.
A
I.
B
But we were sitting there, I remember looking, and I think every Lewis class at least got their money back.
C
Yeah. Yeah.
B
So it's like, hey, if you do it. So it's not always about winning because, you know, we do the. The Great Easter.
A
We do the Winner Take a Dollar.
B
The Great Eastern purse, which is 25, 15, 10. 25, 15, 10. So it paid 98, 97, 96, 95, 94, 93. And then the first Lewis class was a 92, and I broke 91. I was like, you know, it is one of those things of. Okay, great. All the Lewis guys got their money.
C
Yep.
A
People that broke 93 to 90 for free.
C
Exactly.
A
You know, and they enjoyed it and.
B
They were a part of something. You know, this year you, you know, we did the T shirts and all that, and everybody. I know we've had some people here at the Grand.
C
Yep.
B
Come in and like, hey, you know, I didn't get a T shirt there. Well, we do have T shirts now, so if you need one, we got.
C
Some here at the Grand. We'll have them out of Nevada as well.
A
It'll be in Nevada because this will air after the Grand. But we appreciate the ones that came in and bought the shirts. That's the power of tv, folks. That's not happening live.
C
But we got to put filters on his face.
B
We do.
A
It's fun.
B
It's the radio face that was good.
A
I. I wasn't a fan, but what I will say is it was a great time. I'm really looking forward to Nevada. I think we covered a lot of hot topics on that and. And transitioning and shifting. All right, trap doc listeners, we got to take a real quick break, and I've got something that I'm so excited to announce. Trap Shooting USA has now become the official magazine of the Trap Talk podcast.
B
No, it's not only Trap Shooting usa, now it's Wing and Clay Life, Lady Outdoor Lifestyles and Clay Shooting usa.
A
I'm just really excited because such a high quality magazine. I mean, if you guys haven't had these magazines and you actually get to touch them in your hands, they've got really thick paper, they're really glossy, and they keep it really cool. I mean, I just love it.
B
The traveling gunsmith and then in this newest episode, we have.
A
Oh, man, look at, look at those. Look at those handsome guys. I love this. I love it.
C
I love it.
B
All right, folks, we need to take a quick second and get to a new show sponsor, Big Red Motorsports. Big Red, they're personal friends of mine, Jason and George Lee. And they're also a personal sponsor of Min.
A
Now I'll say this, Ricky looked great driving around in that side by side. I got some free rides down at Tucson, the autumn Grand. I think it's awesome that they deliver all across the country. And obviously they love trap shooters. They love trap shooting and they're doing a great job.
B
Listen, they got Can Am, Kawasaki cf Moto Triton trailers. Hit them up. We'll take care of you guys.
A
With that being said, let's get to the show. All right, Trap Talk listeners, let's take a couple seconds and thank a couple more sponsors. First of all, Remington's been with us since day one. I've been shooting these shells since 2007. I shoot the Nitro 27 from the 27 yard line. Ounce and eight, seven and a half and STS, ounce and eighth eights for singles and doubles. They've worked great for me as they do a lot of top shooters all around the country. Give them a try. Don't forget the gun club line when you're practicing and you're wanting to save a little bit of money.
B
We'd also like to thank another sponsor, Outlaw engineering. Randy Freston, R2. I've known Randy since 1988. They do engineering, survey and drafting, GIS, civil structural land development, wetland permitting. They do.
A
And they're friends of trap shooters. I mean, they're trap shooting family. They've been in the ATA forever. His dad's been involved. They're involved. They're beautiful family. They're great people. And we just love that they listen to the show and we love that they support trap talk.
B
Yeah, his dad was past president 1989. So I really want to thank those guys for the support. It really appreciate it here at trap.
A
With that being said, let's get back to the show. How are you feeling about going into the grand this week? I mean, now that we're here, I mean, we're getting ready to start the championship events come Monday.
B
Get one more day.
A
We've got one more day in the prelim. How are you feeling, Joey? What's on your mind?
C
I'm feeling good. I've had a good run on doubles. I'm 500 straight in doubles right now. So that's pretty awesome. My career, longest run I've had, so I'm real excited about that. We got a great squad. We have a lot of fun together out there. So I'm looking forward to getting it going this week here. Dagan Voigtman's just knocking it out of the park as usual. I mean, the kid doesn't miss anything. He's down 11 targets and 1200 or 12 and 12.
B
It's his birthday. We wished him happy birthday today. Did it. Did a shout out to Dagan.
A
Yeah.
B
And he missed handicap and the doubles. And then I guess I was shooting off.
C
He got runner up.
B
Jackson James Jr. Shooter out of Wisconsin. He won champion. So congratulations to, to Jackson on that. That's. I mean, you're standing there shooting off against Dagon. And you know what, like we've said, Dagan is a great individual, his whole family and you know, it is a little intimidating when you're shooting off against someone like Dagan. But like I always tell everybody, you worry about your targets. Yep. You know, I mean, I just got beat in my shoot off. Ryan McKinney, shout out to him from South Dakota. He broke 23, 25. I broke 23, 23. And I think I got seventh place. So he got six. And I just did a lesson with the guy and he was all, he said, I just remember what you told me. You're not shooting off against anybody but yourself.
A
And at least he used it. If I'd have done that, I don't want you guys to got my money's worth. Give me some love.
C
He should have. He should have turned around and said, hey, you want a lesson?
A
I'm sorry, folks, I can't help myself. There's big softballs. I gotta knock. I gotta hit him.
B
That's the first time he's hit anything. But you did break 100 doubles today, so.
A
Yeah, I've let. I mean, Joey showed me how to do it four times in a row. I might hit these things.
B
Hey, shout out to Jason Krause. He got his grand grand slam today.
A
Congratulations.
B
You know my squad mate, so.
A
Absolutely, it's, it's definitely a good time. I'm looking forward to seeing what's happening. You know, I'm looking forward. Back fence in Nevada. We're gonna finish out. I know we got a lot of great scores ahead of us. I know we got a lot of great podcasts that we're come out with ahead of us. A lot of people that we're going to interview here.

This action-packed episode is a live recap from the 2025 Grand American, featuring co-hosts Zach and Ricky, with special guest Joey Charnigo. They dive deep into the massive success of Ohio’s Back Fence Shoot Out—highlighting its impressive growth, unique appeal, and community impact—and look ahead to upcoming events, particularly the highly anticipated Vegas shoot. The episode is equal parts results recap, behind-the-scenes stories, and a roundtable on what’s next for trapshooting. Expect friendly ribbing, memorable anecdotes, and a lot of love for shooters old and new.
On Atmosphere:
“There were more people at the shoot off there than what we have here at the Grand American. And that's what I wanted... I wanted people there and enjoying it and seeing the show at the end of it.” — Joey, [07:37]
On Pressure:
"To watch him shoot his last two targets, his knees were literally shaking. When you got that kind of cash on the line, the pressure's on the line and you know, it's right there." — Joey, [06:58]
On Spreading the Wealth:
“It's not catering to the top guys... that's not what this was geared toward in any way.” — Joey, [08:33]
On Event Impact:
"Now you have this event that's pulling them in for the three days and then they're deciding they want to shoot those other events..." — Zach, [19:47]
On Growth and Format:
“It’ll do it. Now, I don’t think they’ll do it every time, but if you set up an event and say, hey, this is how it is... and you spread the money across the board... everybody feels like they have an opportunity and a chance.” — Zach, [10:17]
This episode is a vibrant snapshot of a trapshooting event done right: inclusive, high-energy, innovative, and fun. By making everyone—from newcomers to national champs—feel like they have a shot at meaningful prizes and recognition, the Back Fence Shoot Out has helped fuel broader interest in both the event and trapshooting overall. With more events ahead, (especially in Vegas), the future looks bright and welcoming for all shooters under the Trap Talk banner.
