You're listening to the Travis Makes Money podcast.
C
What's going on, everybody?
B
Welcome back to the Travis Makes Money podcast, words I mentioned to help you make more money on this episode of the show. My producer, Eric is with me in studio. What's up, man?
D
Let me ask you a question, Travis.
B
It'd be nice.
D
You're 33 years old. Have you known anybody that's ever gotten married? Yeah. Let me ask you this. Out of all the people you know that have gotten married, would you say a substantial amount of those people have gotten divorced over the years?
B
I would say it probably lines up pretty well with the statistic.
D
What's the statistic?
B
That, like, 48% of marriages end in divorce or something?
D
No, what's a statistic? I've never heard that before. I'm just kidding. I was pretending to be aloof. So aloof means. Anyway, so I messed up because I was just trying to riff here, and
B
then you lost track of what your.
D
Oh, so divorce, huh? So the other day you posted on Facebook, I thought it was a really interesting question. On July 24, 2026 at 7:44am Working early, huh? Travis, you said, should every couple sign a prenup before they get married? And you even added in a little thinking emoji, to which Jackie replied, why the hell are you asking this question on Facebook? It looks really bad for us.
B
The thing is, you posted that I did as a proxy because you wanted information and you used my.
D
I did. I did.
B
Without your wife knowing.
D
And I think I. Okay, no, you just built a picture. That's not true. So anyway, so we asked this question, and I asked it because I think there was a clip I'd edited that talked about prenups maybe. And I was like, well, that's an interesting question. Let's talk about it. So in response to the question, should every couple sign a prenup before they get married? There was a myriad of responses. One guy said, no.
B
Well, frankly, that is the most appropriate response is like, it's a yes or no question. Which is why it's funny. There's a myriad of responses because it's sort of like it's. It's. It is.
D
Okay. There was. There was exactly two responses and they alternated between commenters. Someone said this is a great. This is honestly MVP comment. Ryan Jeff Jacobson said there is a prenup already set up by the state or a couple can draft their own which I thought was great. Don't comment on that yet because we'll talk about it. Gianfranco Armelini.
B
Good pronunciation.
D
Molinini says yes. In Italy we do have a debrin. He said yes. Patrick Medeva did a video on this. We'll bookmark that to look at in a second. A very well put together presentation highlighting the benefits to both parties. Great. Chris Holifield said no. Ruben Ramirez says always should have a prenup. You never know someone completely and if they are betrayed, you will never stop regretting having signed a prenup. It's the best way to protect what you have on both sides. A little Freudian slip there. They said if they are betrayed. So you're already assuming that you're going to be the one betraying them in the relationship now. Melissa Hostutler said no. Stephanie Lancaster. Oh, you're from there.
B
I am from there.
D
Their name. They said yes. We have been telling our kids it alleviates everything if the marriage ends. When you do have a prenup before the marriage you are in love and want the best for each other. If it ends, you don't want the best and end up fighting over things like child. It refreshed and it lost me child support and alimony. My new husband and I did one. Speaking from experience, eh, Stephanie? I mean that's fine. That's a lot of people do. I'm not trying to shame.
B
That was weird energy.
E
Ooh.
B
I have an opinion on this.
D
Do we learn lessons from your life experience? Did you? Not that we think it will end but if we did have something in place we we old not doing this again. Lol. Brandon said no way. She gets it all crazy take all. All all.
B
That is a wild take.
D
Jessica Dixon says no. If two adults can make an agreement to marry and share in their earnings and assets and they should be able to behave as adults in the event of separation. Food is a very strong you're chomping at. If one believes they're unable to behave civil then I wouldn't want to marry them. And when I left an engagement after 14 years. Holy smokes. What? And when I left engaged for 14 years and when I left an engagement after 14 years, I got my answer as to exactly why he wanted prenup. You were engaged for 14 years. That's a red flag.
B
I would assume that that was like dating. That's still like the toys and then engaged towards maybe the end of it. I don't know.
D
But then again though. But see, this almost gives a counter argument. Like you were in a relationship for 14 years and then you realize like, oh, I get why he wanted a prenup. It's like, well see, that's proof. You could be married for 14 years and be like, oh, could have walked away with this guy is a mess. Andy Stafford we don't even need to read that one. Andy Stafford, Childhood BFF Former BFF Andy Stafford said yes. If you're getting married by the state, then you just have a plan for separation by the state. There's a religious side, there's a covenant with you and your spouse and your God, and then just a state contract that says our stuff is both our. Both of ours.
B
Yeah.
D
Is the state your God?

D
You know Karen, Karen says and I saw, honestly I saw a Karen commented and I was worried what it would be. But this is just a person that happens to be named that. Yeah, it says that. Not necessarily. Depends on the situation. Very even headed take there. Tommy says if a man wants to use a woman like an object. Yes. Oof. Kyle Ingham. I think he's taking a Little crazy there. Kyle Ingham says marriage is supposed to be a lifelong commitment or covenant. So I lean towards. No, there shouldn't ever be a thought of a possible divorce at the beginning of a marriage. Yeah, but what about the middle? Yeah, that's where most people. Or the end typically. The end is when this usually comes up. So, Travis, there's one person who hasn't answered the question.
E
You.
D
You. Oh, there's two of us.
B
That makes two people.
D
Should every couple sign a prenup before they get married? I'll answer first.
B
Okay.
D
No, you monsters.
C
If you want to use woman as
B
an object and Tommy are like this
D
on that, you should get a prenup.
B
Okay.
D
I would argue. Did you get a prenup? No. But also, I wouldn't necessarily recommend someone get married as young as I did. Did not get a prenup. I'm so screwed. No, I did not. But would advise it to anybody. And I would say, to quote you, I heard you on a podcast the other day and you said, it's like you said about something, you're like, it's like teaching abstinence only sex education. The reality is teenagers are going to have sex, so you should probably teach them safe sex. The reality is 50% of marriages end in divorce. And they all thought at some point that they were the ultimate fairy tale example, of course. And so I think they wouldn't have gotten married. And I also would say it's a lot like when someone gets divorced and they have custody agreements, even if you have a really good relationship, it just removes the weight of saying, like, hey, in the event that this happens, this is what's going to go on. Instead of like on a random Saturday, you're pissed off and you go, I want more money. I want the kid that day. It's like, no, here's the rules.
B
It's already difficult established to go through the divorce. And then you have to work out all the details while you're in that. In the most emotional, bad headspace.
D
Well, and you also might in that moment go, you know what? It's fine. You keep the house. Or, you know what, it's fine. It's like, then 10 years later you go, why did I make that decision? Just because I wanted to be done with it.
B
Right.
D
You know, I actually, this is relevant, I think, to these kind of things. But like most arbitration in any environment or most back and forth with lawyers is meant to wear you down, like the system is meant to. And I've talked to a lot of people in different Settings who have gone through civilization cases. And one of the number one things I hear all the time is all I wanted to do was get out of that room. And so I accepted deals that I shouldn't have accepted because they just wore me down. It's like sitting in a pitch for a timeshare. It's like, come on, just give them an extra 20% of this. Just give her an extra 10% of this. Yeah, just sign away this thing. And it's like, you don't have any clarity. The moment where you have the least amount of clarity is probably sitting in the room signing those papers. So it's probably good to have that squared away when you are in the best of moods.
B
Yeah.
D
Much like a business agreement.
B
That's. Overall, my take is that there's already a prenup that exists. If it's not written by you and your partner, it's written by the state that you got married in.
D
And. But typically, though, Travis, I know the way you perceive things. You prefer the state to have more control over you, right? My libertarian brother. Yeah,
B
yeah, that. I mean, I didn't get one either, but we also. We both got married super young and like.
D
And also went, well, we'll never get divorced. We're Christians.
B
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. That was. It was never an option type of a thing. But there's plenty of people that were friends of mine that got married the same age that we did that are
D
already divorced, some within the first year. You know, Gotta.
B
Exactly.
D
That's crazy to me. I remember talking one time to our mutual friend Jen, who does wedding photos, and she said, I usually deliver all of the photos, like on the one year anniversary, and it's not uncommon to be like, oh, your full set of photos are done. And they're like, oh, we're divorced.
B
Yeah.
D
I would be so pissed as a photographer.
C
Someone told me that couldn't give me a heads up.
D
I was airbrushing your zit on like 600 photos and you couldn't tell me you guys were packing it up? So I. The reason. So it was kind of God's timing. I put out this post. Why aren't you laughing at that? Oh, sorry. Why are you laughing at that?
B
When I said that, I was laughing at the ding.
D
Okay. So it's kind of God's timing as it usually is when I post a piece of content.
B
It's like, well, I mean, everything.
D
God's kind of moving through me. You know what I mean? So I put. I don't know what. What's so Funny.
B
That thought is something funny.
D
Don't think about it.
B
Okay.
D
So I posted this and I said, should every couple sign a prenup before they get married? Literally that day Tara asked for a divorce.
B
Yeah.
D
Can I stay here? Literally that day? I don't want to. You know what? I don't like joking about divorce. Really.
B
Okay.
D
So don't do that again. And I really don't like it right now because look what happened to Tom and Christina P. All those jokes about divorce and look what happened. So don't put that in the air.
B
Rest in peace. Their marriage.
D
Low key, though. Some of those clips look really bad now.
C
Yeah.
D
But anyway, we won't get into that. We won't get into that. Some of them look bad then. But I thought maybe I just don't understand humor.
E
Yeah.
D
Anyway, relationship.
B
Anywho.
D
So anyway, so that day at 8 o'. Clock. So. And by the way, I think. I think this person is stealing our content. So I posted at 7:40 about the prenup question. Guess who posts at 8:09am? Dave Ramsey.
B
The night.
D
Oh, the next day, Dave Ramsey's. No, that day he's like, hurry, rush this content out. Travis is posting it.
B
Typical Dave.
D
You know, his financial takes get way more traction than mine. And Dave Ramsey posted a video and he said, I changed my mind on prenups. Now, Dave, I don't know if you know this. Dave's very religious.
B
He's a religious fellow.
D
And his advice for the years, and I've listened to a lot of clips where he says, this is like signing up prenup is basically like setting the stage for your divorce. A commitment to getting divorced. Yes. And so he put a video out four days ago saying, I changed my mind on prenups. Here's what he had to say.
E
When we came on the Air 30 years ago, we told people, don't get a prenup if you can't combine your stuff. They're not worth marrying, forget it. And we were just hardcore about it. The more we went along, more we found in coaching people that the problems that happen that a prenup does away with are more to do when there's an extreme difference in net worth. So if you got 10 million bucks and the other person's got zero, the other thing the prenup does is it keeps the weirdness out of the extended family because the extended family is like, oh, she married a multimillionaire. And here comes cousin Eddie, rolls up in the rv, right? You know, he wants to talk to the new hubby about his new plan. All that stuff goes away because you just go, I can't do anything. I got on prenup. And it helps you deal with extended family. That's nuts. And him too for that matter. Keeps them from thinking you're a gold digger.
D
I think some people and it auto plays me. See again, the algorithm knows Dave watches our stuff and then it's like here you like Dave Ramsey. If you like Dave Ramsey, you'll love Eric Skorzinski.
B
Well, they've already heard about you if they're listening.
C

D
But. But anyway, I thought it was interesting. He changed.
B
That's big news, right?
D
And you know what? The top comment. So not only did they steal this content from us, then someone stole one of the content. The comments.
B
Wow.
D
And they said everyone has a prenup. You write it or the state writes it. This is just so weird.
E
Yeah.
D
I don't know if this is some Russian bot farm that's like skimming our content, but we need to get to the bottom of this. Yeah. So I thought it was interesting to change his perspective. I definitely think too he mentions keeping the weirdness out of the family, but I think just in general, through the process of nobody expects to get divorced. And I think being able to eliminate that thing of again, it's the same thing as having a company partnership. It's like everyone is great when you're having wine and steak and going, let's Start a laundromat. You know how people start laundromats? They have wine and stink. I just picking a dumb example, say, buy a bar, but no, no, buy a laundromat. But then the laundromat fails, and then you're like, bro. And then it's a mess. Or one guy's living in a way that's like, ruining this business, or one person in your relationship is acting this way. It's just nice to have all this outlined. And I will also say too, like, for all the relationships that end because of infidelity or because of abuse or because, like, to have this all set up for those things that you cannot predict the other person would be capable of doing. This is a big. A big yes for me. Yeah, absolutely.
B
And the net worth disparity is also worth mentioning because the like, if, if. If it is a situation where it was like, you know, our situations.
D
I was going to say that's kind of why I feel okay with the way that, yes, things are same.
B
Because we built everything from scratch.
D
Yeah. We had less than nothing when we got married. So it's a little different. But, like, if I were to get married, I told my wife and I would only because I'm not getting divorced, but if she died tomorrow and I got married next week, then they would suspect me of murder. And same for you. You should wait at least a year. I'm just kidding. I'm not gonna. I will die after her or I will die before her.
B
Yeah.
D
Because she will outlive me. That's true. But anyway, I was gonna say, I always tell her, I'm like, if I were to marry someone at this stage of my life, it would be a lot different because they weren't there from the beginning. You know what I mean? Like, it's a big, big difference.
B
Yeah. Gotta protect the stuff that you have that you built. But like I said, getting married so young, it doesn't.
C
I don't look at it and go,
B
like, man, I regret not getting a prenup. You know, it's like, if we. If something, you'll say that it would be like, I would be totally fine with.
D
People usually wait to say till they go through the divorce.
B
Yeah.
D
Like, dang it. But yeah, I just said, I want the dog. Like, if you leave me. If you leave me, take everything. But you better not take the dog. Or I get weekends with the dog.
B
Yeah, you get visitation rights, like, through the fence.
D
Okay. You know, people do that probably. Yeah.
B
Custody battles over dogs.
D
Well, you know, I take A page out of Solan's book. You cut the dog in half. You give half to each person, right? So one of the people that was referenced, and we can't say his name three times because he'll appear and say, I'm a numbers guy. And is Patrick Bet David. He was on the Iced Coffee Hour. So he did do a long video on this that talks about these things. It's like 14 minutes. I don't think we should go through that whole thing. But he was on the Iced Coffee Hour and he talked a little bit about the importance of prenups. And that's four minutes. And that felt way more palatable to me. So let's watch and see what he had to say. And guess what? I'm going into this clip blind, baby, because I decided to look it up after this comment. So let's see what he says here. Are you ready? You have to say, commence.
B
Begin.
D
Computer, play video. Say it.
B
No, I'm not gonna say that.
D
Say it. Say, computer, play video.
B
No.
D
Say it.
B
No.
D
Computer, I don't wanna. Computer, play video. I'm all for it. Oh, what? I'm all for. You said, computer, play too fast. Say it. Say, computer, play video. Just say it real quick, please.
B
I don't.
D
Because then we can save it.
B
I don't do the things that people tell me.
D
We can save it as a. As a built in transition to just put wherever we want. Where it could be like, computer, play video, and then we'll do reactions.
B
Why are you saying it like a 4 year old?
D
You've never seen that meme?
B
No.
D
Computer. There's a guy that will. There's a guy that will post a lot of reels and he'll say he'll like. He'll like walk in a sim, like, computer, make him gay and horny. You haven't seen that?
B
No. We have wildly different algorithms.
D
I know. I try to mess yours up all the time.
B
You do. You know, it's wild stuff. I'm like, what are you. What are you watching?
D
What's funny is I'm always logged in your Instagram and so sometimes I'll post something and then like, you're just autopilot. And I'll start watching stories and I'll literally be like, who the hell are all these people? I don't remember following any of them.
B
While other people are like, travis is watching my story.
D
Jackie's like, you saw my story and you didn't say anything? And it's like, no, that was Eric and he was confused.
B
You know, that would just be funny if you replied as me to just,
D
I should do that for a whole day and just be like, oreo. Sounds schizophrenic. I'll be replying to Jackie, like, Travis. Tell Travis I said hi.
B
Yeah. Wait, what?
C
All right, well, that's it for this episode of the show. Remember, money only solves your money problems, but it's easier to solve the rest of your problems with money in the bank. So let's start there, here on the Travis Makes Money podcast. Catch you next time.
B
Peace.
Podcast: Travis Makes Money
Host: Travis Chappell
Co-host/Producer: Eric (last name not specified)
Date: August 4, 2026
Episode Theme:
This episode dives into the modern debate around prenuptial agreements (prenups), exploring whether every couple should sign one before getting married. Travis and Eric use a mix of humor and personal anecdotes, crowdsource community opinions, and highlight the shifting perspectives—even among renowned financial experts. The conversation connects the topic of prenups to personal finance, future-proofing, and the realities of wealth-building in today’s world.
"You're 33 years old. Have you known anybody that's ever gotten married?... Would you say a substantial amount of those people have gotten divorced over the years?" (Eric, 00:44)
"The reality is teenagers are going to have sex, so you should probably teach them safe sex. The reality is 50% of marriages end in divorce...I also would say it's a lot like when someone gets divorced and they have custody agreements, even if you have a really good relationship, it just removes the weight." (Eric, 09:54–10:59)
"If you got 10 million bucks and the other person's got zero…the other thing the prenup does is it keeps the weirdness out of the extended family...All that stuff goes away because you just go, I can't do anything. I got on prenup." (Dave Ramsey Quote, 15:36)
