You're listening to a Tenderfoot TV podcast. This is one of the most sensational crimes ever to explode in Hollywood. In 1989, Beverly Hills Police responded to a brutal double homicide. A powerful Hollywood executive and his glamorous wife slain in their own mansion. And the killers, their two sons. California jury hears opening statements today in the trial of two Beverly Hills brothers accused of murdering their wealthy parents. But when Lyle and Eric Menendez stood trial, they didn't just confess. They revealed something darker. Why did you kill your parents? Because we were afraid. I just wanted it to stop. What followed was a cultural earthquake. Two wealthy boys in pastel sweaters crying on the stand. Late night jokes, SNL parodies. Tabloids calling them the rich kid kids. But beneath the spectacle was a harder question. Were these sons cold blooded murderers or victims? No one wanted to believe. I've heard of very few murders that were more savage than this one was. I just walked into the room, I just started firing and I don't know. The Menendez boys are using what's come to be known as the battered child defense. Oh, these two arrogant brothers are gonna fry. It doesn't make sense they would do this for money. People kill for, but they mostly kill for hatred. This case has been treated like a soap opera by you all for a long time. And it isn't a soap opera. This is real life. For decades, the Menendez brothers have lived between punchline and parable. But today, with new evidence shifting culture and survivors finally being heard, the story demands a second look. I'm Celisia Stanton and starting Monday, October 6th, I'm bringing you a three part series on the Menendez brothers. It's a story of power, trauma and the that still echoes 35 years later.
