This is the Eds with Eddie Judge and Edwin Arroyave. Welcome back to the Eds podcast.
Edwin Arroyave
I'm Eddie and I'm Edwin.
Eddie Judge
We are the Eds. So hey, how you doing Edwin, how's it going? I know there's a lot going on in your life, and I just want to know how you're doing.
Edwin Arroyave
I'm doing as good as I could be doing and just getting ready for the holidays, you know, I mean, and focusing on the things that I can control. Right. And all that other stuff kind of figures itself out as it figures itself out. But I've always been big on just focusing on what you can control and all that other stuff you can't control. You just leave that up to God, and. And that's what gives you peace. I think when you try to control things that you can't control is when you rob yourself of the inner peace. So I've been intentional with just. With that part and staying in faith, staying in, and focusing on the children and stuff like that. So. So far, so. So. I mean, it's obviously difficult times, but, you know, we. We do what we always do, which is you just remain push. You continue to push forward. You know, life's going to throw some curveballs at you, and you just gotta continue to push, and things have a way to always figure themselves out within time. So patience, you know, I wish you.
Eddie Judge
Both the best, mostly because it's not an easy thing to go through, and especially the timing, you know, it just. It couldn't be any worse because this sucks. Yeah. So I really feel bad, and I wish you both, you know, hope you guys get through this pretty good.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah. Thank you. No, I appreciate it.
Eddie Judge
Okay.
Edwin Arroyave
But we got a good show. Holidays. Let's talk about it.
Eddie Judge
Let's talk about the holidays. For this topic, we're going to be talking about this time of the year from our traditions, growing up, our own family, maybe some gifts, ideas, and anything we want to talk about with respect to the holidays. And I'll start it off with, you know, growing up, I really. The. The only traditions I had were, you know, being from a Latin, we can come up with any excuse to celebrate. So we definitely had parties, we had the gifts, and we celebrated any. Any opportunity we got, including Thanksgiving. You know, it was just. We're Americans now, so it was part of our culture.
Edwin Arroyave
And.
Eddie Judge
And frankly, my favorite holiday of the entire year is Thanksgiving for two reasons. I just love to be thankful for my. My life, my family. You know, I can't. I can't emphasize enough how happy I am with my life. And. And of course, the meals. I just love turkey and stuffing and all the. All the good stuff that comes with Thanksgiving. But do you. Do you remember growing up and did you?
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah. So it's funny. So I grew up in Colombia, so I came to the US When I was six. But what I do remember as a kid, my dad would throw like amazing parties for Christmas. Like we'd have orchestra, like we'd have like bands at the house and it'd be just everyone party at the. You know, for Christmas. It's like what they do, right. Like you eat. But then they'd start the party late. And then when I came to the U.S. sort of, you know, that kind of went away. The whole party all night on Christmas. But it was, you know, it's fun seeing all these adults partying and you're just kind of there, you know, waiting for the, for the gifts and stuff. But what's interesting is in, at least in the Latin community for us, we used to stay up to 12 all the time to open up our presence. And we would open all of them.
Eddie Judge
Yes.
Edwin Arroyave
And yes. Now it's the flip side of that, you know, being with Teddy for as long as I was it. You open one present if you could make it to midnight, which most can't.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
And then you open all of them the next morning. So definitely two different worlds. I kind of like the stain to staying up till 12. Well, not anymore because I'm now once it's like I'm like dead. But back in the day, I used to love waiting till 12 and opening up all the, the, the gifts.
Eddie Judge
So how do you, how did you do it before? Did everybody come to your house? Did you go to Teddy's family's house? I mean that it gets.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah, so we typically. Yeah, so typically we would. Do, you know, if it's Thanksgiving at her dad's house, we'd have Christmas at our house and then vice versa. If it's Christmas or if it's Thanksgiving at our house, then we're going with her dad on Christmas. So that's always been sort of the, the, the back and forth.
Eddie Judge
Uhuh. So it's, it's. Yeah. So you share the, the. The. Okay. And he would come to the house.
Edwin Arroyave
And then they'll come to the house. I think last year we celebrated Christmas at our house. And then this year Thanksgiving will be at, at John's house. So it's cool.
Eddie Judge
So has John and your family been at the same festivities?
Edwin Arroyave
No, because when, when it's. When we're here, it's rare that John comes. So it's typically if John comes because we're going to him.
Eddie Judge
Okay.
Edwin Arroyave
Although last year was sort of different I think it was like the first time that he. That he was with us at our house. We're typically going to his house, but, you know, it's always a fun time going to his houses and stuff. And yeah, kids get to play and do all their thing. We have this great football for Thanksgiving. We have this great tradition where we play, you know, he's got a nice little football field and we'll go, you know, 8 on 8, 10 on 10. How fun. Yeah. I remember one year, Cruz just got ran over and he's just like crying, poor thing. I mean, he just got completely ran over. And there is no. Yeah, there is no safety. You're in that football game. If you're five years old and you're in the way, you're getting run over.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
So. But it's fun, you know.
Eddie Judge
So your family met John, your mom and dad, and that's how your family met.
Edwin Arroyave
My mom has. My. My entire family has, except for my dad. And we met John when we first got married 13 years ago in Paris. That's when they met him because everybody flew to Paris.
Eddie Judge
Right.
Edwin Arroyave
And that's where we got married. And then that's when my mom, siblings all met John. And it was a great, great day as well.
Eddie Judge
So.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah. And then, you know, in regards to Thanksgiving, you know, I like the tradition of the football. Right. That we play all the time and, you know, the food's great. It's just, it's. I definitely like Christmas more than Thanksgiving. I know you said you're a Thanksgiving guy. I'm more of a. Of Christmas guy.
Eddie Judge
So for Thanksgiving, do you do the traditional turkey. Turkey meal or do you infuse it with some.
Edwin Arroyave
If we go to John's house. 100%, our house is, you know, we'll mix in some tamales, we'll mix in some Colombian food. We'll mix in a little bit of everything.
Eddie Judge
Awesome.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah.
Eddie Judge
I just always love that there's this sweet rice with. With grapes. Not grapes. Yeah, those dried up. What's a dried up? Grape. It was my favorite dish. And then thus, I discovered yucca from going to the club.
Edwin Arroyave
Yes.
Eddie Judge
Yeah. And it was awesome. Good. So, yeah, we. We always kept it traditional American meals. Even when my family came over, they might have brought tamales, the ones season. But we're having the whole family coming over this year for Thanksgiving. So, yeah, it'll be. I don't know what. My wife has upper sleeve, if she's going to do a traditional Thanksgiving turkey or if we're going to do prime rib or if we're going to do something different. But I just look forward. I just love turkey on Thanksgiving for some reason. It's just. It brings. It makes me happy.

Freddie Prinze Jr.
So are.
Edwin Arroyave
You an early decorator guy? Like, do you start decorating your house? Are you, like, by the Christmas tree November 1, the day after Halloween?
Eddie Judge
You know, I'll start it with this. There was a time period, I think it was in my mid-20s, where I just didn't like the holidays. So when holiday seasons come up, I was like, oh, you know, it becomes so stressful. Like, where are we going to go? To your families, My families. Where are we going to spend time with? And it got so complicated. I think I've had two years in my entire life where on holidays, I just stayed home by myself. I didn't want to do anything right. So that kind of set the pace for me. And then eventually I got older and I started realizing it's become so commercialized that Thanksgiving. People start decorating for Thanksgiving in the summer. You go to Home Depot today and you have, you know, or two months ago, and you start seeing Christmas stuff. So to me, it's kind of put a bad taste in my mouth. It just. Everything's become so commercialized and has taken the magic away from what Christmas and Thanksgiving really is. So to answer the question is I wait, like, to wait till the last minute, you know, I don't have my Christmas lights up yet. I just found out my wife's going to want a real Christmas tree this year. We've always had a fake tree. It's just easier, you know? So now I'm. I'm not looking forward to it, but I'm going to deal with the mess that real trees make. But I think that's part of the experience, right?
Edwin Arroyave
So are you putting up the decorations, or is that Tamara when it comes to. Are you or are you paying somebody to do it?
Eddie Judge
No, we do it. I did one year when I was single, making a lot of money, and it was in this house. I decided to hire a decorator and paid her like two grand or $2,500, and she decorated the entire house. And it looked like Nordstrom in here. It was beautif.
Edwin Arroyave
I think it's worth doing that. I remember it was funny. I gave one day. I'm like, when. I think it was when we first started dating, I don't know if we were married yet. I think it was when we first started dating. But it's a funny story I told Teddy, can you get us like, a nice Christmas tree? And I gave her some money to go do it. I'm not joking. She brings back. I don't know if it got delivered or she actually got it herself, but I was expecting like this huge tree because we had these high, high ceilings. Well, she brings back a tree that maybe at most is 3ft tall. And that was our Christmas tree that year. And I'm like, teddy, I just gave you a ton of money. Like, what? This is the best. You came up with like a three foot tree. So we're not the best decorators. I think last year we paid somebody to kind of do it. I'm just like the worst freaking handyman of all time, so.
Eddie Judge
Oh, really?
Edwin Arroyave
Oh, I don't even know how to change a tire, bro. I'm not a handy dude. Big mama's mama's boy. Mama did everything for me. And then that's just never been my strength. So with decorating, we're not the best. Yeah, Teddy's at least a little bit better than I am, but definitely I am the worst.
Eddie Judge
Well, I'll tell you, when we first got together, Tam and I made sure that we started doing those holiday traditions ourselves, you know, because we wanted to keep it as normal as possible for our kids. So we decorated and we prepared, and I did. I'm in charge of the outside. I used to help her more on the inside as well, like hang it. I put the tree up and she would put the decorations up. Right.
Edwin Arroyave
But a lot of injuries happen outside. It's another reason I'm scared to do it. I'm like, I'd rather pay someone. Yeah, me and me on a. On some stairs outside. Yeah, that's a recipe for disaster. Have you. Did you ever fall?
Eddie Judge
I've never fallen, but I think it was two years ago that I decided to hang up the hanging of the lights outside because I went and I rented a 20 foot ladder because, you know, we're two story house and just getting the damn ladder up to work, it was everything. And I'm strong, I work out, I'm pretty fit. And it took everything in my power to get that ladder up. And of course I climb up the ladder to put the lights up. And suddenly I don't know if it's an age thing, but suddenly I got this fear of heights. I'm like, okay, ladders go back. I'm Hiring people. I can't do this anymore. So I do hire people to put the lights up now. And, and I'll. I'm responsible for getting all the stuff out of storage and putting it in the house. And we've created a new kind of tradition because Sophia is our last kid that still lives with us. And if it wasn't for her, we wouldn't put anything up for Thanksgiving. We wouldn't put anything up, especially for Halloween. She loved Halloween. And so she took it upon herself to do all the decorations and everything. And so she took the lead and we followed. And we still do that. And for Christmas, we're going to decorate again. But she's, she's doing it herself. It's kind of like it stuck with her. Like, she really is excited to do the holidays, which is really rewarding for us because that's the ultimate reason why we did it when we were together and we were going through those hard times with transitioning from the divorce. So it's paid off and we still have to decorate. And I say have to because if we didn't have Sophia here, I don't think Cameron, I would be decorating that. We're so over it. That's funny. What about, let's see, New Year's? Do you guys still. When was the last time you partied on New Year's Eve?
Edwin Arroyave
We haven't in a while because it's, it's been about the kids and, you know, they're at that age too, where it's kind of hard to leave them.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
You know, 4, 10, 12. So really, I want to say the last time I'm, I'm getting confused, but maybe it was an Aspen three years ago. Okay. And I think we had a. Just a blast.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
But it's. I think that was two, three years ago. And we, I mean, we, we partied. It was fun and. But I might be getting. I don't know if that was Christmas. I think it was New Year's, but we had a blast. No, it was new. You know what? It was New Year's. What am I talking about? We had a blast. But mostly, you know, we just don't like leaving the kids. I, I personally don't like leaving the kids because I'm such a special day to like, be able to say Happy New Year to them. So we usually do the 9:00 New York. Yeah, we do. We do the New York B drop, and then we go to bed. Nice. So. But it's interesting, you know, I, you know, it's different when you're single. Right. When you're single. Shoot. What are you going to do on New Year's Eve? You know? Yeah, but in fact, when I first met Teddy, I was obviously single at the time, and I met her December 26th. Like, who goes out December 26th? But, like, bingo, people, what else are you going to do on December 26th? There's nothing to do. And you have some free time.
Eddie Judge
Yes.
Edwin Arroyave
Because, you know, work's not that heavy at the time. So it's like the holidays. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Eddie Judge
So I was saying earlier, I've worked my ass off so much when I was younger that holidays were just the end of the day, you know, and then you find yourself, okay, well, everything's closed, nobody's working. What am I going to do with myself?

You guys have any traditions now, like the elf on the shelf or anything like that for the kids?
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah, so we do. So Teddy's really good with that stuff. Yeah. So when they come down, she's got the whole stocking stuff down. She's really good at that stuff. And the kids will come down and get their stuff. I never had any of that growing up. You know, I just had the hair presents, open them up, you know. And I don't know, you know, because that maybe because we grew in. Because I grew up in Colombia the first six years. There is no Santa Claus in Colombia. Really? Right.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
It's. It's more about Nino Dios than baby Jesus. Right. So Santa Claus was never a big thing for me as a kid. And I kind of knew that it was fake. My kids.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
I want to say my 10 year old still thinks Santa Claus, okay, exist. And my 12 year old, I know Bella, which is my 16 year old, she knew, like, yeah. By 8, she's like, dad, there is no Santa Claus. You know.
Eddie Judge
What about Dove?
Edwin Arroyave
Oh, yeah.
Eddie Judge
That'S awesome.
Edwin Arroyave
But, yeah.
Eddie Judge
What kind of gift giver have you been and evolved to?
Edwin Arroyave
So I think I'm a great gift giver. I'm not the best to shop for because I'm very picky with stuff. And I always tell people, hey, you're gonna buy me clothes? Just don't do it. I'd rather buy my own clothes. Right?
Eddie Judge
Yeah. Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
I love getting socks. My mom always gives me socks because it's like the one thing I really don't buy. Like.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
Like the last thing is like, yeah, socks. So my mom Always gives me socks, which is cool. And I just like, I like, like stuff that, you know, like somebody putting a collage of pictures together for me, because that's something I wouldn't do. Right.
Eddie Judge
Simple, sentimental stuff.
Edwin Arroyave
It's the sentimental stuff because the stuff to buy, I could buy it myself. And.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
Like, usually, like, when people buy me clothes, it's just like, I know clothes, like, do I need more clothes? No.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
And then I feel bad because a lot of times I won't even wear it, you know, so. But I think I. As far as me giving gifts, I think I've been pretty good with that. I like, you know, giving gifts for sure.
Eddie Judge
When, when it comes to you and Teddy, did you guys struggle giving each other gifts or, or is it an easy thing to do?
Edwin Arroyave
What sort of changed? I think now what I like to do typically is just take her shopping. That way she gets what she wants and. Yeah. And looks good. And, you know, sometimes it's, it's just with designer stuff, it's tough. It is buying stuff if you don't fit into it.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
So. Because every size is different. Right. Like what?
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
So I think I like doing that because I, and maybe, and maybe in a. I don't know. I mean, I just, I think with me, I, I'd like the same way as, well, like, I'd rather choose my stuff than, yeah. You know, you trying to buy me something that I know I'm not going to wear.
Eddie Judge
So it's become very challenging, sort of, you know, for us too. Because I, I. It's not always a holiday that I want to buy my wife something. Right. It's a birthday, it's something else. And, and we can go anywhere and pick something up and gift to each other because we're thinking about each other. Right. But when it comes to gift giving, I think we're at the point in our life where I'll buy my own stuff and, and she can wrap it and then she buys her own stuff, and sometimes I wrap it, sometimes she wraps it.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah.
Eddie Judge
It just makes it so much easier.
Edwin Arroyave
100.
Eddie Judge
Unlike sentimental holidays, like, I, I try to do this every Valentine's Day. I try to find a photo or something and create a collage or have it printed in a canvas and of her and I. And, or her and I in the family. And those are the gifts I like to give her on those holidays. Her birthday, for example. This year, it's hard every year because I ask her, what do you want? And she never tells me. But this year, for her birthday, she ended up getting that facial thing, laser thing. So I think she did it intentionally so I wouldn't be surprising her with a birthday party or anything. She just didn't want that. So it made it kind of simple for me because while she's recovering, I ended up going to Cartier. And I know she has a few bracelets already, and I just had to find one that she didn't have. And it was pretty easy. But outside of that, she's so simple, so easygoing. It makes it challenging for me, like, to buy her something. I have to ask her, like, what do you want?
Edwin Arroyave
Exactly. You know what's interesting too about that? I. I feel the same way. Like what I say I'm a good gift giver, but that's based on how I feel not being forced to. So sometimes I feel like Valentine's and Christmas and, you know, I just, I like giving gifts at random times.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
You know, whereas sometimes it's just like, oh, I'm being forced to just because.
Eddie Judge
Yeah, it's. I don't like that at all.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah, I like it when it just comes from me. And that's why, like, my best gifts are always random gifts. And I almost have to remind. I used to have to remind Teddy, like, hey, this is a little bit of a Christmas gift. I just, you know, bought it a little early. You know, don't forget about this one. And of course she forgets and, you know, I got to get her the actual Christmas one too. But. But I like more of that than those are my best gifts are the ones that just kind of come because I want to. Versus I got, you know, people telling me I have to because it's, It's. Yeah, it's a buying season.
Eddie Judge
So let me ask you this. Historically, I've been that typical guy that just waits till Christmas Eve and then I'm like, oh, I gotta go shopping. And I had a tradition with my dad for many years before he stopped drinking, where we would go to the mall on Christmas Eve. As soon as it opened, it was literally like that Mervyn's commercial. Open, open, open. We'd go in early in the morning because we were just early people and start shopping. And I'll never forget, one day we both went to lunch, both had a couple of drinks. We were actually more than a couple of drinks and poured ourselves into the Apple store. And I walked out with this 40 inch monitor. He walked out with a computer. And I don't know, it was like $6,000 later we got home, like, what Happened. How did this happen? So we got to stop drinking on Christmas Eve. But it was, it was kind of fun to do that. Not just because I got to spend time with my dad, but it was just like, okay, the pressure's on. I got to find something for my wife or my girlfriend or who or my family. And it was like, go, go, go. Get it done, get it done. And it all worked out. I got everybody a. But it was under pressure. Now in this day and age, I just go to Amazon.
Edwin Arroyave
I know.
Eddie Judge
So much easier.
Edwin Arroyave
So much easier. Yeah. I was saying. It's funny. I was the same way for such a long time. Just get last minute presents.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
The 24th, that was me, you know. But yeah, Teddy's like the queen of Amazon, so we don't have that problem anymore.
Eddie Judge
So do you like to go to the store and shop or is it easier for you to find?
Edwin Arroyave
No, I love, like personally for me, shopping, I love going to a store and find stuff on and yeah, I hate shopping online because it just every, everything fits different, you know?
Eddie Judge
Yeah. Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
So I definitely like going to the store.
Eddie Judge
Yeah. I think it brings some nostalgia too. Like how we grew up. We have to go to the store and buy it. We didn't. You can't have it delivered.
Edwin Arroyave
I love taking my kids to shop. I love being able to like take somebody to get them what they want.
Eddie Judge
Yes.
Edwin Arroyave
That way it's like one. And it's funny, I just took my daughter shopping last week because she was going to Sabrina Carpenter concert. I think that's her name, which I should have known better. I had a bad feeling about that because I, I was, I had a feeling she was going to do some crazy on stage. Yeah. My daughter's 12. I should have known better. And anyway, but I took a shopping for that and like, I like to think that I'm pretty stylish. Like, yeah, I know how to dress and that's always been, you know, I was best dressed at my high school. Yeah. So. And I've kept, I think I've kept up that tradition pretty well. So I'm taking my daughter and like I was trying to choose outfits for her because I think I know it's cool. Apparently not. Yeah, no, she had, she said, and I quote, dad, I have my own vision of what I want to wear. Yeah, I'm done.
Eddie Judge
Let him be.
Edwin Arroyave
Let him be.
Eddie Judge
How do you do gift giving for holidays for your spouse? So do you ask the kids what they want to get their mom or do you just buy something and say hey, this is for your mom.
Edwin Arroyave
Wish list.
Eddie Judge
They'll do.
Edwin Arroyave
They'll do a little wish list and stuff. So. Yeah.
Eddie Judge
And they. They come up with some pretty good ideas, or are they like, I don't know what to get Mom?
Edwin Arroyave
No, they're usually pretty good with the ideas.
Eddie Judge
Okay.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah.
Eddie Judge
This Teddy. Do the same thing with the kids. And do you. Are you surprised when they give you gifts?
Edwin Arroyave
No.
Eddie Judge
Are you that difficult to buy for?
Edwin Arroyave
I'm probably not the easiest person to shop for, you know?
Eddie Judge
That's awesome.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah. It's so funny. I like it. Just nowadays, it's just like, even getting gifts, I don't. I'm Even opening them is like, oh, I wonder what I'm gonna get? But it's not. It's. It's definitely changed since I was a kid. Let's put it to that way. Now I like giving. I actually. I think there's a part of me just doesn't, you know, when people buy stuff, I'm just like, you know, so you don't have to, like. I'm more like, save your money. You don't need to buy me anything. Yeah.
Eddie Judge
You're more of a giver than a receiver.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah. Yeah, for sure.
Eddie Judge
Okay. I. I have discovered myself being more like that, too, to the point that, you know, Christmas is here. My wife doesn't know what to get me, and she's wrapping all these gifts. I'm like, babe, here's one gift. Just wrap it. I'll open one gift. It's. I'm cool with that. And then the kids have all these gifts they opened, and of course, I get her some gifts, and. And all of a sudden, I have, like, seven other gifts. I'm like, where'd those come from? And it was just little knickknacks that she, you know, buys for. For my bike or the garage or something, you know, or something that the kids come up with that. It's creative. Exactly. The little things. And they. They are so meaningful. So meaningful, because I know that the kids really thought it through. Right? Like, the simple sign that I have in my garage that says, harley parking only. You know, that was my daughter who says, let's get him that. Like, it's. It's sentimental. I love that.
Edwin Arroyave
No, I love it.
Eddie Judge
Yeah.
Edwin Arroyave
All right, well, I think that's a wrap.
Eddie Judge
Okay.
Edwin Arroyave
Yeah.
Eddie Judge
Awesome. I wish you the best for these holidays. Yeah, same. Yeah. Stay healthy, brother. You, too. Catching up.
Edwin Arroyave
It's always great catching up.
Eddie Judge
All right.
Edwin Arroyave
Happy holidays, you guys.
Eddie Judge
Happy holidays, bro. Take care.

Podcast Summary: Two Ts In A Pod with Teddi Mellencamp and Tamra Judge
Episode Title: The Eds: ’Tis the Season
Release Date: November 27, 2024
Hosts: Eddie Judge and Edwin Arroyave
Platform: iHeartPodcasts
In this heartwarming episode titled The Eds: ’Tis the Season, hosts Eddie Judge and Edwin Arroyave delve into the intricacies of holiday traditions, personal anecdotes, and the evolving dynamics of celebrating special occasions. Released on November 27, 2024, the conversation provides listeners with an intimate look into how the holiday season is navigated amidst personal challenges and family dynamics.
Eddie and Edwin kick off the discussion by sharing their unique holiday traditions, shaped by their cultural backgrounds and personal experiences.
Eddie Judge reflects on his Latin heritage, stating, "The only traditions I had were, you know, being from a Latin, we can come up with any excuse to celebrate. So we definitely had parties, we had the gifts, and we celebrated any opportunity we got, including Thanksgiving" (04:27).
Edwin Arroyave adds, "I grew up in Colombia, so I came to the US When I was six. My dad would throw amazing parties for Christmas with orchestras and bands at the house" (05:08). He contrasts this with his current experiences in the U.S., highlighting the differences in how Christmas is celebrated between his Colombian roots and American culture.
The hosts candidly discuss personal hardships, particularly focusing on Edwin’s difficult times and the importance of maintaining peace and faith.
Edwin shares, "Focusing on what you can control is when you rob yourself of inner peace. So I've been intentional with staying in faith and focusing on the children" (02:37).
Eddie empathizes, "I really feel bad, and I wish you guys get through this pretty good" (03:37), showcasing the supportive dynamic between the hosts.
The conversation shifts to the challenges and joys of decorating during the holiday season.
Eddie laughs, "I just found out my wife's going to want a real Christmas tree this year. We've always had a fake tree. It's just easier, you know?" (13:10). He candidly shares his initial resistance to the mess of real trees but acknowledges it as part of the holiday experience.
Edwin recounts a humorous incident, "I gave her money to get a nice Christmas tree, but she brought back a tree that's maybe at most 3ft tall" (15:05), highlighting their decorating mishaps and evolving traditions.
Both hosts discuss the benefits and drawbacks of hiring decorators versus decorating themselves.
Eddie reflects, "I hired a decorator once and paid her like two grand. It looked like Nordstrom in here. It was beautiful" (14:47).
Edwin shares his strategy, "Sophia, our youngest, took over decorating for the holidays. It’s rewarding because it aligns with why we decorated initially—keeping traditions for the kids" (16:27).
Eddie and Edwin delve into the complexities of gift-giving, sharing personal preferences and strategies to simplify the process.
Edwin reveals, "I'm a great gift giver but picky when it comes to shopping. I'd rather buy my own clothes than have someone buy them for me" (25:05).
Eddie explains his approach, "Now, I just go to Amazon. So much easier. We're the queen of Amazon, so we don't have that problem anymore" (31:16).
The hosts explore the balance between sentimental and practical gifts, emphasizing personalization and thoughtfulness.
Eddie shares a sentimental tradition, "Every Valentine's Day, I create a collage or have it printed on a canvas of us. It’s meaningful and thoughtful" (27:42).
Edwin adds, "I prefer random gifts that come from a genuine place, instead of something bought because it’s a buying season" (29:07).
Involving children in gift selection adds another layer of thoughtfulness to their traditions.
Edwin mentions, "The kids create wish lists and come up with meaningful gifts for me. It’s sentimental and shows they’ve thought it through" (33:22).
Eddie highlights the joy of kids' creativity, "The little things, like a custom sign for my garage, are so meaningful because the kids really thought it through" (35:22).
Both hosts express their frustrations with the commercialization of holidays, which often detracts from the intended spirit of the season.
Eddie laments, "Everything's become so commercialized and has taken the magic away from what Christmas and Thanksgiving really are" (13:10).
Edwin concurs, emphasizing the importance of maintaining meaningful traditions amidst external pressures.
As their lives evolve, so do their holiday traditions, adapting to new circumstances and family dynamics.
Eddie discusses marital and parenting influences, "With Sophia around, we have new decorating traditions. It’s rewarding because it aligns with why we decorated initially" (16:27).
Edwin reflects on personal growth, "I focus on what I can control and leave the rest to find its way. This approach has helped maintain peace during the holidays" (02:37).
Eddie Judge and Edwin Arroyave wrap up the episode by reflecting on the importance of family, tradition, and adaptability during the holiday season. They share heartfelt holiday wishes, emphasizing the value of creating lasting memories and cherishing time with loved ones.
