Class is in session. Hey, everybody, and welcome to Unlearn 16. Class is in session. Today, the podcast is going to be a bit of a vlog. I'm going to pick up on my principal, Ryan Sealy. Yeah, he does belong to me. And we're going to tour Metro Prep, and it's going to be associated with the chapter, the prologue of the book, in which we talk about saving the school, running the school, and what is going to happen next. Now, if you're listening to this before July 1, 2020, my book's not out yet. And this particular vlog and podcast is going to be associated with the chapter in the book. Now you get to see what's happened this last year at Metro Prep and what Ryan and I are going to be doing and building on the future. So let's go find Ryan and take a tour. First and foremost, can you name that movie? Go ahead, give me the movie. Tell me what you think about it. It's one of my favorites. Let's go. Just so you guys know, that is Lore. It's Metro Prep's mascot. Ryan and I decided that would be our mascot when we started this school, and we continued on with the ethos of the school because this is what was on the side of a concrete bag where we actually mix concrete. In Tanzania, we were gifted one of these bags by local workers who use everything consistently, but they gave us one so we could remember it. I'm going to show you the original, then we're going to get Ryan just so you guys can get a full view. This is the games room. So we have a ping pong table. We have, I don't know, that shuffleboard kind of thing. We have chess, and, yes, of course, we have video games. There's the original. All right, guys, I found him. Make no mistake. This is he. This is he. Is that how I say that? This is he? Why would I talk like that right at the beginning?

[Ryan Sealy]

It's like we're at a Renaissance festival.

[Joanna]

Get thy sword. All right, so what are we going to do? We're going to wander around the school. We're going to talk about what's next.

Where do you want to start?

[Ryan Sealy]

Let's go down through towards the lab, the new lab.

[Joanna]

Oh. This is our cafeteria. And just so everybody knows, I'm working on getting a McDonald's put right in there. Right. Ryan likes to show our history. Ryan's like, let's go down this hole before we go to the science lab. And he goes, it shows our history. Nobody's going to be looking at that though. It's weird. Oh, can you tell me your favorite part? What's your favorite memory? Oh, this is going to put you on the spot of working at Metro Prep. So Ryan and I have been here. He thinks himself a bit of a comedian. Give me your favorite memory.

[Ryan Sealy]

Yeah.

[Joanna]

Of working here. Do you have one that just like pops into your head? 23 years for me, 24 years for him. He's a lot older.

[Ryan Sealy]

There's two. There's too many. But one that pops out would be spray painting the roof of the old Black Box studio with Jonathan Hirsch by hand, with paint sprayers upside down and not realizing the paint would then drip all over and then having to put on like those white hazmat painter suits. And we were there till like one in the morning and Wayne was still in his office waiting for us to finish. That's kind of a funny memory that we would do that. Like myself and a student. Yeah, but I don't know, like, there's so many. The travel. Right. Meeting James Gandolfini with my students in New York. That's up there.

[Joanna]

That's up there, sure. Look at. We're coming around the corner, guys. Let me show you. Pause. Okay, so I'm gonna shoot it from here. You can see Ryan is all the way down there. Right. So this hole, there's a classroom here. Empty classroom. And then we're going to walk all the way down here. It's far. And then here we go.

[Ryan Sealy]

Yeah. So this, this is going to be the new genius biotech lab. And this wall is coming down, so it'll be two platforms put together and the ceilings are coming out.

[Joanna]

They're raising that, popping them all off.

[Ryan Sealy]

And then this wall here will be mainly glass all the way through, all the way down. New benches and all the new machines.

[Joanna]

You guys can see that's. We're going to pop those up. So it's all industrial. It's going to look very cool.

[Ryan Sealy]

It's higher than I thought.

[Joanna]

It's very high, actually. So all of this is going to be built like an authentic lab. It is the only genius genetics lab in a high school in Ontario.

[Ryan Sealy]

Well, I mean, that's what I've been told.

[Joanna]

That's what we've been told. This is it we're going to have.

[Ryan Sealy]

It's definitely a professional, state of the art lab. And the courses have been designed with our teachers and professors at ubc. So it's very unique. I think what I also love about it is that they've already chosen all the colors. It's going to be mainly white, and it's the same color as the foyer of my house.

[Joanna]

It's Benjamin Chantilly.

[Ryan Sealy]

Chantilly lace. It's a very good white. And I'm picky about whites.

[Joanna]

He's so picky about everything, guys. He's so picky. Just so you know. So you have all these gorgeous windows here. Right. The renovations are starting literally this week. And this will be all up and running for a camp at the end of the semester. At the end of the summer. Sorry. And then ready to roll for. I. I'm gonna get Maury Povich in here so we can put. You're not the father, you know, that's the genetic. No, we shouldn't do that. Okay, so this is my classroom. For those of you who have never seen it before. Ryan, I need a complete renovation in my classroom. I think we need to make it all. Why is that picture? Can you fix that? For the love of. Who comes in my room and messes things up. I think we should have a renovation in my room. And I think I should renovate everything. New colors, new everything to be an 80s style room. I want it to be the 1980s in here.

[Ryan Sealy]

Okay.

[Joanna]

I mean, we already have like the Star wars stuff that already fits. Yeah.

[Ryan Sealy]

You're dating yourself, though.

[Joanna]

Well, that's fine.

[Ryan Sealy]

Kind of like the dates on the wall.

[Joanna]

I'd date myself. Would you date yourself?

[Ryan Sealy]

Yeah. You know what?

[Joanna]

That'd be a good date.

[Ryan Sealy]

What do you mean when you say 80s? Like. Like just.

[Joanna]

I'm thinking, like, you know, posters of bands and movies from the 80s. I'm thinking maybe some sayings. I'm thinking some fashion. Maybe I could have frames along this wall and, like, you know, hang that right in, you know, that varsity jacket or. Or whatever kind of the. I can have a bunch of pins and we'll all pin our shoes together.

[Ryan Sealy]

What about your cereal?

[Joanna]

Well, those are all from the 80s. See, the beauty of it is I.

[Ryan Sealy]

Don'T think you have to do much.

[Joanna]

I live in the 80s in my head regularly. This.

[Ryan Sealy]

This is an 80s.

The kids put that together. That's Lego.

Isn't that cool? It actually. It works. All right, well, we'll see.

We have a lot of renovations to do, Joanna. And this will be my room.

Empty lockers, Summer. Nothing better.

Nothing better than an empty locker in.

The building until September.

You know what also is true, guys? Kids today, and I'm going to say that in that phrasing, don't know how to undo their locker. So pretty much, they have a lock on it. They never lock it because if I tested them to actually open it, I'd have to come open it. I. We probably shouldn't have let them graduate if they couldn't open their own locker.

[Ryan Sealy]

Well, there'd be a lot of people coming back.

[Joanna]

This is what I'm saying. I like it. This is what we should have done. All right. Look at that jersey, guys. This is the beginning of a new business boardroom. Are you ready? Look at this table. Look at that. It's gonna be amazing. I'm gonna sit at the top, and I'm gonna tell people whether or not they get money.

[Ryan Sealy]

This was very difficult to get in here.

[Joanna]

It weighed a ton.

[Ryan Sealy]

Mickey and Christian had to take it all apart. And Mickey says it's never leaving the room.

[Joanna]

It is never leaving. But here's the problem. Do you see the color of this? The desk and that stuff? What? We've got to change it. It's got a match.

[Ryan Sealy]

No, I've got. I've got. There's a. There's matches that.

[Joanna]

Right? All right. Little Metro Prep house team trophy. Now, unfortunately, my team hasn't won in 20 years. Ooh, the drama room. Guys, we just went through almost switches. He's so exciting about. He's excited about lighting. Guys did Almost Famous, so they. They took the movie. They wrote. What would you call a script?

[Ryan Sealy]

Well, yeah, we adapted. We adapted the screenplay for the stage, and there were, like, 25 people in it. This is sort of the remnants of the set. We haven't really struck it because we're doing season two in the fall. So the concept was this part of the stage you can sort of see in the dark, but it's a lot of music, musical instruments, pianos, road cases. So everything on stage had to be an instrument, or it had to be something to do with a live band that was on the road. And then the audience, if you do a spin, they were in the house.

[Joanna]

Now he's directing.

[Ryan Sealy]

Right.

[Joanna]

But it was cool because you had actors integrating in the audience. So there were scenes that happened over there. There were scenes that happened over there. So you really felt kind of immersed in the entire thing.

[Ryan Sealy]

And then if you look in the corner, you see the drum kit. So what we did was we had the band play behind the audience and then we filmed them. We live stream. Stream them to the projector and then projected them.

[Joanna]

Projected it right onto that.

[Ryan Sealy]

You could see the band behind you. Most people turned around to watch the band.

[Joanna]

It was ironic. People turned around to watch the band.

[Ryan Sealy]

And then they realized they were on the.

[Joanna]

They also filmed. They also filmed when they came in those doors with this sort of backlight. And it was so amazing because you really didn't even know it was being live streamed and you thought video was playing of actual band people coming in.

[Ryan Sealy]

Yeah, it was a really great process. We worked on it almost all year in my head. And then we actually. It's about six months of rehearsals and building and yeah, it was really, really quite something.

[Joanna]

And coming this December, we are going to do season two, right?

[Ryan Sealy]

Yep, that's the plan.

[Joanna]

That's the plan. Just for posterity, I'm going to take you. Posterity. Posterity. I'm going to take you through all of the plays Ryan has done since 2002. So you have the Crucible, the Laramie project, Waiting for Godot. You have can you see me yet? Barry Child. You guys notice a theme yet? Because I'm already depressed reading the titles. This was actually. He wrote this. My favorite movie is Jaws. That's why we're best friends. Because my favorite movie also Jaws, Escape from Happiness. Hint, it is not happy. God of Carnage. Better Living. I took all these photos, by the way, and made these covers Lie of the Mind. Lord of the Flies. We did Lord of the Flies with all of the great ape boys. God, it was anarchy. In fact, it should have just been a documentary of how we had to do this because it turned into it anyway. Of Mice and Men, which was incredible, the flick. We actually had two different casts so we could do different. Two different shows once, guys, once was just so fantastic, I can't even describe it. We tried the Royal Tenenbaums, but you know what happened in the middle of the Royal Tenenbaums? That Covid happened. So then we did as of 2021, a radio version of it. Because you know, Covid. Then we had Sweat with Lynn Nottage. That was the one I was in. If you go to a different chapter, you'll hear all about my experience with Sweat that he pretty much bullied me into. Not really bullied, but definitely bribed me into or one of the best experiences of my life. Changed everything for me. So I thank him for that. And we have done John. Now, unfortunately, we're missing Two. So last year we did Frankenstein, and as you know, this year we did Almost Famous. Told you I was in sweat. You didn't believe me, did you? Look at that pose. You might want to know what.

[Ryan Sealy]

Well, first of all, if you spin this loading dock here that I use for backdrops when I take people's pictures. And what's funny is, if you look on the ground, there's the remnants of.

[Joanna]

An old bed that we used for Frankenstein that's got to get thrown out, unfortunately. Yeah. All right, onwards and upwards. So Metro, is that part of the building, Right. Huge section of the building. They're tearing apart stuff there. And this whole building is Metro, but we haven't filled it yet because we are about to start renovating this part. I'm going to take you in so you guys can see what we're going to do and. And what it's going to be built into. Because this is kind of coming soon.

[Ryan Sealy]

Yeah, this is kind of like the back entrance to the school. Then it goes onto the parking lot.

[Joanna]

We'll show you the front entrance in a second.

[Ryan Sealy]

Eventually, this will be an auditorium.

[Joanna]

Yes, full auditorium. Let's school. Let's follow him in. Metro.

[Ryan Sealy]

Keys, keys, keys.

They've already started.

They've already started dismantling.

They're all going to come out.

It's all coming out. All of the side will be all windows. This is all getting chucked. Anyone needs a cabinet, if anybody needs a cabinet, now's the time to call. Look at them all. So many cabinets.

So this is. This is a massive undertaking. So the previous tenants obviously had a lot of office furniture. And before we can demolish the walls and take the ceilings out, all of this has to be taken apart and recycled. A lot of metal, a lot of particle board. Now, we did a lot of this.

[Joanna]

Six years ago when in the other building. The other side of the building.

[Ryan Sealy]

So we know what we're doing.

[Joanna]

But.

[Ryan Sealy]

Yeah, this whole entire space.

[Joanna]

We'll go walk down this way. Yeah, this whole space, guys, it's all.

[Ryan Sealy]

Once all the walls come out, it's huge. And it's about a 400 seat.

[Joanna]

How big?

[Ryan Sealy]

I think 400 seats is what we're.

[Joanna]

400 seat.

[Ryan Sealy]

Theater, auditorium. Theater, stage. So the new sign that's there, all of this is going to get redone and then this is going to be eventually the entrance to the building. And then through here there will be a corridor that goes onto the other side and into.

[Joanna]

Into the Other part of all of this is getting torn out to make room for this.

[Ryan Sealy]

Some offices here and all the bathrooms and everything are already there. But this is, this is the main entrance here. So eventually this will be a different look, but the ceiling will come out and be a pretty grand space.

[Joanna]

Fantastic.

Okay, so then here we'll just go down eventually.

[Joanna]

He just directs me all the time to be.

You asked me to do it.

There's going to be a gym, a new gymnasium, and it's gonna whole parking lot. Well, it won't be the whole park.

[Joanna]

Oh, that's too big. That's too big. Okay, fine. Well, if we had the Roger grease out. Thank God you wore this. Like what are we. Is this wool? What are we doing here? Why are you so dressed up?

[Ryan Sealy]

Never be underdressed.

[Joanna]

Okay, so it's gonna go back here. We're gonna have like a full size. Because right now we have a smaller gym, but we're gonna have a full size gym. I'm. I'm envisioning some glass, like a lot of glass walls rather than enclosed walls.

[Ryan Sealy]

You know, like, it's exciting that we. We've always needed you. We've got great sports programs and we have really talented kids. And some kids, you know, they love to just try sports. Even if they don't, if they're not the best at it, they want to play. And we've never really had a full court.

[Joanna]

Yeah.

[Ryan Sealy]

So eventually. And same for volleyball, right?

[Joanna]

You having a volleyball court be so much better. Yeah. Cuz right now we use elite, which is a huge basketball thing down the street. But having this in this space. So being able to build a separate space. Now here's why I like separate space. I don't want to hear basketballs while I'm trying to. I don't want to.

[Ryan Sealy]

I didn't even think of that.

[Joanna]

0 out of 10 on that. Oh, it's hot outside. Okay, so final thoughts. Like we got one year under our belt. One year of you and I running this show, which I've never been so tired. And lately I've been waking up at like 2am wondering about class list, so I'd like to stop that, but whatever. Final thoughts. What do you think? What do you think is the most exciting thing about this coming year or this next decade or.

[Ryan Sealy]

Well, certainly the team we have excites me. We have a really great team and, you know, I'm just grateful for everyone's help and love and support this year because it has been challenging but worth it in every way. Possible. And I'm looking forward to taking it to the next level because that's what we've always dreamt of doing. And I think Wayne would be very, very proud of that.

And what one thing we're going to talk about with the next level is a little bit the fact that we're an IB candidate school, which is pretty crazy. Right? So we became an IB candidate school. So now we're going through all of the process of our teachers getting educated, Ryan, getting educated so we know what we need to do.

When people say, what do you love about teaching? Well, there's lots of things and there's things I, I don't love about it because it's really tricky. But I do love the September start as opposed to a January. You know, a lot of people on the fiscal level.

Yeah. And I think, you know, this year with the IB candidacy, that's going to take a lot of work. But again, it's something that I think suits our school very well and so we'll get it done.

And just so you guys know, IB is all about sort of holistic and diverse form of education for each student. Rather than having this tunnel visioned. You only do what you like, you only do what you're good at. So we've always done it, we just haven't been accredited.

Yeah, a little more involved than that. But we're, we're well suited to it. It's. It is, it's very challenging. And the students that are going to enroll in the ib, they're going to have a lot of work to do. So get ready.

Some of my classes, like society and stuff, we always do very artistic projects that tie in. So they recreated this poster from the Walking Dead. These are all, or we're all Metro prep teachers that the kids did makeup on and everything lit this whole look. There's Ryan right there. They lit this entire image perfectly. Took the photos themselves, created this digital format, put on the Walking Dead and then we printed it. So I like to tie things into my class. That makes them, you know, experience new things and makes them a little bit more creative. Now that poster should be in every bio room known to man. Okay, let's see if we can find. There she is. It's our little Axolotl. Hi. I just want to take her out and play with her. Am I allowed to do that. Alrighty.
